In order to explore the methods of recycling waste paper, reduce environment pollution, and develop a circular economy, the application of waste corrugated paper to the strengthening of polylactic acid (PLA) was studied. Plant fiber from waste corrugated paper (WCPF) was used to prepare WCPF/PLA composite via co-extrusion. The WCPF was extracted from the waste corrugated paper by beating in a Valli beating machine and grinding in a disc grinder. KH-550 coupling agent was used to modify the surface of WCPF to improve the interface adhesive strength between the WCPF and PLA matrix. The effects of the contents of WCPF and KH-550 coupling agent on the mechanical properties, microstructure, crystallization properties, and thermostability of the WCPF/PLA composite were studied. The results show that the WCPF can be well separated from each other. The WCPF can be uniformly dispersed in the PLA matrix through a co-extrusion process. WCPF can increase the mechanical strength and deformation resistance ability of WCPF/PLA composite, and KH-550 coupling agent can further improve that of the WCPF/PLA composite. The research results and evaluation of the applicability of the original composition of hybrid paper based on silver nanowires (AgNWs), cellulose pulp (CP), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are presented and discussed. The material tested was used to manufacture sensors for mechanical deformation resulting from external influences or related to human activity interactions. The sensors were fabricated using an AgNWs + CP suspension and additives by the vacuum filtration method. The substrate obtained was machined and then laminated with a layer of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The recorded responses to selected types of imposed mechanical interactions in the form of changes in the relative resistance of the sensor throughout the tests showed a close cause-and-effect relationship. The response of the tested systems when applying an alternating magnetic field was also observed. The results indicate that the proposed solutions can find application in the monitoring of mechanical interactions resulting from the dynamic behavior of physical objects, as well as derived from selected human vital functions. In recent years, as the electronics industry has driven the development of human civilization, flexible responsive materials have become highly favored in sensing applications. However, most flexible materials are not stable under high-temperature conditions, so only a few flexible responsive materials are suitable for high-temperature and high-strength applications. In this paper, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were added as conductive material into poly(amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAS) solutions to prepare MWCNTs/polyimide aerogel-based papers (CPs) by a simple method. The introduction of MWCNTs into the ordered multilayer folded structure of the CPs provided a conductive pathway and improved their thermal stability. When the multilayer folded structure was deformed, the MWCNTs between the layers contacted each other, increasing the number of electron transport channels and providing a larger contact area for the conductive network. When the deformation was removed, the MWCNTs in the interlayer contact zone rapidly separated, providing stable and excellent responsiveness at high temperatures (CP-2: ΔR/R 0 value of up to −0.45 at 300 °C) and favorable stability after 1000 cycles (CP-2: RV retention of 92.4 % at 25 °C and 80.5 % at 300 °C). The thermal response in paper has been studied by thermography. It was observed that an inhomogeneous deformation pattern arose in the paper samples during tensile testing. In the plastic regime a pattern of warmer streaks could be observed in the samples. On the same samples digital image correlation (DIC) was used to study local strain fields. It was concluded that the heat patterns observed by thermography coincided with the deformation patterns observed by DIC. Because of its fibrous network structure, paper has an inhomogeneous micro-structure, which is called formation. It could be shown that the formation was the cause of the inhomogeneous deformations in paper. Finite element simulations was used to show how papers with different degrees of heterogeneity would deform. Creped papers, where the strain at break has been increased, were analysed. For these paper it was seen that an overlaid compaction of the paper was created during the creping process. During tensile testing this was recovered as the paper network structure was strained. In this work, we present a methodology to assess wrist pressure during the handwriting process. Using optical coherence tomography, it was possible to determine the deformation suffered by the paper during the handwriting process. A calibration of the deformation suffered by the paper as a function of the pressure exerted by the pen was performed, making it possible to determine several parameters of interest, such as the radius of the pen tip sphere R = 488 ± 2 ¡im, the Poisson coefficient v = 0.30 ± 0.02 and the effective Young's modulus of bond paper 75 g/m2. To this end, we developed a method for determining the Hooke modulus for a spring, with which we built a device for applying a known force to a ballpoint pen during the handwriting process. We also performed the study depending on the type of substrate, with five volunteers trying to copy the same signature on four different types of paper. Using the optical coherence tomography technique, we demonstrate that it is possible to differentiate the authorship of a signature also by the depth of deformation on the paper. The article analyses the effects of paper moisture content on energy absorbed during its tensile testing in the range of moisture equilibrium obtained during paper air conditioning at a temperature of 23 °C. To predict changes in breaking energy caused by changes in moisture content, two calculation methods were proposed. Although the use of conductive pencil patterns on cellulose paper provides inexpensive, disposable sensors, they have limited stretchability and are easily affected by variations in the ambient environment. This work presents the combination of pencil-on-paper with the hydrophobic fumed SiO 2 (Hf-SiO 2) coating and stretchable kirigami structures from laser cutting to prepare a superhydrophobic, stretchable pencil-on-paper multifunctional sensing platform. The resulting sensor exhibits a large response to NO 2 gas at elevated temperature from self-heating, which is minimally affected by the variations in the ambient temperature and relative humidity, as well as mechanical deformations such as bending and stretching states. The integrated temperature sensor and electrodes with the sensing platform can accurately detect temperature and electrophysiological signals to alert for adverse thermal effects and cardiopulmonary diseases. This article describes a new method for evaluation of radial crush strength of paper cores. Based on the theory of multilayered composites, a mathematical model has been developed to calculate the value of destructive force during radial crushing of spirally shaped paper cores whose layers are made of different materials. Abstract  In this study, a simplified Acoustic Emission (AE) equipment, in essence an AE signal conditioner and a USB (Universal Serial Bus) data acquisition system, is used to study what happens in paper structures during mechanical loading. By the use of such equipment, some parameters that can be extracted are e.g. the stress and strain at onset of AE, the stress and strain at the onset of rapid AE defined as some numerical factor (larger then one) times the initial emission rate, the emission rate at the first stage of loading and the stress and strain at final failure i.e. when the specimen loses its load carrying ability.In this study however, the interest is focused on one particular parameter i.e. the elastic strain energy density W c at onset of AE. This is a parameter with a clear physical meaning and in this study, the correlation between this parameter and a fracture toughness measure, is investigated.The conclusion is that when nine different paper materials (with a large span regarding properties) are considered, there is a correlation (however not linear) between these two parameters. Abstract A number of problems associated with dimensional stability of paper products have to do with hygroexpansion in response to changes in humidity or moisture content. The main underlying mechanism of hygroexpansion in paper is the effect of the change of fiber cross-sections transferred through fiber bonds. In fact, the transverse expansion of fibers can be an order of magnitude greater than the longitudinal expansion. Addressing such problems using modeling on the microscale is associated with large computational costs since both the bonds and the fibers need to be resolved. We present a method for modeling the hygro or thermal expansion of interconnected fiber networks modeled with beam elements and connected through beam-to-beam contact. Being a line structure, beams can only support pointwise contact, which poses a challenge for modeling the force transfer induced by the deformation of the cross-sections at the contact point. The idea of implementing the stress transfer is to use a concurrent multiscale approach in which the bond level is resolved in detail using the configuration of the fibers and the computed strains are passed over to the beam elements. We verify and prove the applicability of this approach by comparing it with continuum models. We demonstrate the advantage of using this approach in terms of its tremendous saving in time. The use of beam models for modeling the hygro- or thermal expansion of fiber networks enables considering relevant sizes in the problems involving dimensional stability, in particular those associated with embedded inhomogeneities. We will show the applicability of the model by providing insights into published experimental observations on the hygroexpansion properties of paper products. Finally, we will demonstrate that the use of a 2D model to simulate the inter-fiber bonds in a network, not only leads to underestimation of out-of-plane deformations, but also to overestimation of the contribution of the transverse deformation of fibers to the in-plane dimensional change of the network. In this paper, an efficient computational framework for the full-wave design by optimization of complex microwave passive devices, such as antennas, filters, and multiplexers, is described. The framework consists of a computational engine, a 3D object modeler, and a graphical user interface. The computational engine, which is based on a finite element method with curvilinear higher-order tetrahedral elements, is coupled with built-in or external gradient-based optimization procedures. For speed, a model order reduction technique is used and the gradient computation is achieved by perturbation with geometry deformation, processed on the level of the individual mesh nodes. To maximize performance, the framework is targeted to multicore CPU architectures and its extended version can also use multiple GPUs. To illustrate the accuracy and high efficiency of the framework, we provide examples of simulations of a dielectric resonator antenna and full-wave design by optimization of two diplexers involving tens of unknowns, and show that the design can be completed within the duration of a few simulations using industry-standard FEM solvers. Electrical contact resistance (ECR) at the interface is of significant importance in many fields of science and engineering. Current methods for contact resistance estimation are based on the typical nearly incompressible rough surfaces, which is not suitable for porous material with large deformation in the compression process. The objective of this work is to build an analytical model for ECR between solid material and porous material, for example, which could be used to predict power loss between carbon fiber paper and bipolar plate in the fuel cell. First, mathematical description of solid roughness surface is built by classic Greenwood and Williamson model. Considering the porous structure, carbon fiber paper is modeled by multi-layer construction based on random line network model. Effect of large compression of carbon paper on contact behavior is furtherly given necessary attention in this study. Contact pressure and resistance are calculated based on statistical methods with consideration of multi-deformation states. Then, experiments are carried out to validate the numerical model. The results show good agreements with the numerical model. Finally, influences of carbon paper compression and main parameters are systematically discussed based on the numerical model. The model developed will enhance our understanding regarding the relation between contact pressure and contact resistance at the interface for solid material and fiber-structure material. Laminated paperboard and paper is widely used in packaging products. Its out-of-plane properties play a crucial role in converting paperboard to a carton through the creasing and folding process. The aim of this study is to describe the out-of-plane mechanical response with an elastic-plastic model based on the observed experimental behavior. The model was derived from a thermodynamic framework and was based on the multiplicative split of the deformation gradient in the context of hyperelasticity. A structural tensor-based approach was applied to model the elastic deformation, while a multi-surface based yield criterion was adopted to describe the plastic behavior. The model considers both material densification and internal friction effects, which were observed experimentally. According to the experimental behavior, a quadratic yield locus under pure shear loading was assumed in the model. Finally, the model was validated with a cylinder compression test and found to capture the highly anisotropic, elastic-plastic behavior accurately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the effects of water absorption on the geometry of a paper sheet is important for inkjet printing applications, since internal moisture content differences may cause unacceptable out-of-plane deformations. The present work focuses on moisture-induced deformations due to a moisture content that is uniform over the thickness of the sheet. Large enough in-plane differences will cause the sheet to buckle, leading to a wavy pattern at the edges of the sheet. Two approaches are utilized to study this for levels of moisture content up to and including the threshold for buckling. An analytical approach, based on geometrically nonlinear plate theory (von Kármán theory), and a numerical one, using commercially available finite element software, are presented. As a first reference problem an isotropic circular plate, wetted uniformly at its center, is solved both analytically and numerically for the in-plane stress distribution, the buckling threshold, and the resulting buckling mode. Secondly, the same is done for an orthotropic rectangular plate, wetted at its edges. Here, in the analytical approach a Rayleigh–Ritz analysis is employed to approximate the buckling threshold. The mechanical response of three different structural core sandwich panels in out-of-plane compression and shear has been analyzed. Specific core shapes examined are arc-tangent, wavy trapezoidal and hemispherical. Unit cells consisting of representative elements of the core attached to face sheets were selected for analysis. Both face sheets and core were assumed made from paper. Finite element analysis employing large deformation and rotations and orthotropic elastic–plastic behavior was used. The results show that the arc-tangent and trapezoidal cores are prone to collapse by extensive bending and buckling, whereas the hemispherical core behaved more stably in compression and shear. Core sheets with a hemispherical shape were prepared from copy paper sheets in a specially designed forming machine. Sandwich test specimens were prepared from this core and tested in out-of-plane compression, and the load-displacement response was compared to predictions from finite element simulations. In this paper the deep drawing of cups from fiber-based materials, which is explored for some time now, is further developed through the use of micron-small vibrations in an ultrasonic frequency range within the deep-drawing tools. The design of such tools required preliminary investigations concerning the limitations of use and feasibility of this technology. These include tests for necessary clearances between punch and die, occurring pressure in this clearance, necessary punch forces and the heating of the material under the vibrational influence. According to these experiences a flexible test machine was developed enabling the examination of the deep drawing process with vibrating tools as well as its possibilities and limits. The dependence of punch force and cup quality from the ultrasonic parameters was determined and it was found that the required punch force can be reduced by up to 80% and a significant smoothing of the cup surface as well as an improved stiffness of the 3D-shapes is achieved. The use of Raman spectroscopy in probing the deformation mechanisms of cellulose fibres (regenerated and natural), and two natural cellulose composite systems (wood and paper) is described. It is shown that during tensile deformation the 1095 cm−1 Raman band, corresponding to the stretching of the cellulose ring structure, shifts towards a lower wavenumber due to molecular deformation. By analysing a number of fibres with different microstructures this shift is shown to be invaluable in understanding the micromechanisms of deformation in these materials. Moreover, the rate of Raman band shift is shown to be invariant with stress for all fibre types, consistent with a fibre microstructure based on a modified series aggregate model. In the composite systems, such as wood and paper, it is shown that the stress-induced Raman band shift in the cellulose gives an important insight into their local deformation micromechanics. Significant dimensional variations may occur in paper-based materials when subjected to changes in moisture content. Moisture induced deformations are governed by the swelling of individual fibres, which is transferred through inter-fibre bonds to the entire fibrous network. Complex interactions between mechanical and hygro-expansive properties take place in the bonding areas, affecting the overall material response. In most network models, the role of these inter-fibre bonds is not explicitly incorporated. This work presents a periodic meso-structural model for the discrete fibrous network, which considers the free-standing fibre segments and inter-fibre bonds. Despite its simplicity, the reference unit-cell enables the incorporation of relevant micro- and meso-structural features such as network structure, fibres and bond geometry and hygro-elastic properties. The proposed model is solved analytically through a proper homogenization strategy, allowing to recover the paper’s anisotropic hygro-mechanical response in terms of effective elastic constants and effective hygro-expansive coefficients, exploiting the coupling at the meso-structural level between hygroscopic and mechanical behavior. A comparison with experimental results obtained from the literature shows that the presented approach is quite accurate in predicting the overall paper response, thereby revealing the influence of several meso-scale parameters (e.g. fibre orientation, dimensions, mechanical strength). Abstract: This paper presents a method to predict the through-thickness moisture content distribution and associated induced deformations of paper and cardboard sheets as they are subjected to relative humidity changes. The transient moisture diffusion problem is solved using a “natural” analytic approach that has previously been applied for solving transient heat conduction in multi-layer solids. The deformation behaviour of the sheet during the moisture diffusion process is predicted using a semi-analytical approach based on a Rayleigh–Ritz minimization of the total potential energy. Geometrically nonlinear effects are taken into account. Curvatures of the originally flat sheet are predicted as a function of time, as are the shapes of the sheet for steady-state condition. As multiple solutions exist, stability is studied. The developed model was used to study the deformation behaviour of one paper and two cardboard sheets. Comparisons with finite-element results demonstrate that the developed model provides accurate results. The displacements obtained for steady-state conditions are within +6%. Comparisons with previous steady-state analyses reveal important differences in the shape of one cardboard sheet. This suggests that the moisture diffusion process may influence the configuration assumed by the sheet at steady-state equilibrium. Hence, it may be necessary to take the moisture diffusion into account in the analysis to accurately predict the hygro-mechanical behaviour of paper or cardboard sheets. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Free-standing paper-like or foil-like materials are an integral part of our technological society. Their uses include protective layers, chemical filters, components of electrical batteries or supercapacitors, adhesive layers, electronic or optoelectronic components, and molecular storage. Inorganic ‘paper-like’ materials based on nanoscale components such as exfoliated vermiculite or mica platelets have been intensively studied and commercialized as protective coatings, high-temperature binders, dielectric barriers and gas-impermeable membranes4,5. Carbon-based flexible graphite foils composed of stacked platelets of expanded graphite have long been used in packing and gasketing applications because of their chemical resistivity against most media, superior sealability over a wide temperature range, and impermeability to fluids. The discovery of carbon nanotubes brought about bucky paper, which displays excellent mechanical and electrical properties that make it potentially suitable for fuel cell and structural composite applications. Here we report the preparation and characterization of graphene oxide paper, a free-standing carbon-based membrane material made by flow-directed assembly of individual graphene oxide sheets. This new material outperforms many other paper-like materials in stiffness and strength. Abstract: An anisotropic elasto-plastic constitutive model of paper material is presented. It is formulated in a spatial setting in which anisotropic properties are accounted for by use of structural variables. A multiplicative split of the deformation gradient is employed to introduce plasticity. A similar approach is used to model the plastic deformation of the substructure. The yield surface adopted is based on the Tsai–Wu failure criterion, used previously to model failure of paper material. A non-associated plasticity theory is employed to calibrate the model to experimental data. It turns out that a multi-axial loading situation is needed to calibrate the model and here a biaxial tension test is audited. Microindentation as a method for determining important material properties of paper coating materials is studied experimentally and numerically. The bulk of the investigation is concentrated upon the short-lived elastic part of a spherical indentation test, but determination of the failure stress of the coating is also discussed. The results indicate that microindentation can be a powerful tool for material characterization of these materials, but only if careful efforts are made to account for the influence from plasticity as well as from boundary effects. Although offsite construction (OSC) has emerged as a promising solution to low productivity issues in the construction industry, knowledge for effective management of OSC projects is yet to be explored and developed further. To enhance our understanding of the landscape of the current OSC management knowledge, this study identified and reviewed 83 operation-level OSC management papers. By mapping the papers on three dimensions (i.e. OSC project type, project phase, and management area), this review sheds light on the knowledge areas addressed more frequently than the other areas over time in a detailed manner. The review also shows that papers on planning, manufacturing, maintenance phases and schedule, resources, and stakeholder management areas have a relatively large number of citations, implying a great interest in these research areas. Finally, the review discusses that substantial research work is still required in the areas of OSC execution strategy, emerging technologies in offsite manufacturing and schedule management, internet of things (IoT)-based material logistics planning and tracking, building information model-based visualization and decision support, and social and environmental effects of stakeholder engagement in OSC projects. The paper presents an effective plate formulation based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) and a novel simple quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory (S-Q3HSDT) to study static bending, free vibration, and buckling behaviors of functionally graded plates. In S-Q3HSDT fashion, five unknowns per node are included; both shear deformation and thickness-stretching effects across the thickness are taken into account; and the awkward shear locking phenomenon is avoided. The requirement for C 1 -continuity in terms of the S-Q3DHSDT is straightforwardly possessed with the aid of inherent high-order continuity of non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS), which serve as basis functions in our IGA formulation. The superior performance and accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerous numerical examples. The calculated results are then compared with reference solutions, investigating the effects of boundary conditions, gradient index, and other aspect ratios on mechanical responses of functionally graded plates. Abstract: We present a model for the laminated composite plate problem based on the Reissner–Mindlin model and first-order lamination theory. The weak problem based on this model is solved with the finite element method using stabilized MITC (mixed interpolation of tensorial components) finite elements. Detailed a priori estimates are given for the mixed finite element formulation of the problem. Explicit bounds for the continuity and coercivity constants of the coupling terms are presented, thus refining earlier results. Furthermore, we present an application of the theory to the paper cockling problem and investigate the effect of boundary conditions on the small-scale deformation of the solution numerically. Abstract: The creep of paper is accelerated by moisture cycling. This effect is known as mechano-sorptive creep. It is assumed that this is an effect of transient stresses produced during moisture content changes in combination with non-linear creep behaviour of the fibres. The stresses produced by the moisture content changes are often much larger than the applied mechanical loads. If this is the case, the mechanical loads are only a perturbation to the internal stress state, and it will appear as if the mechano-sorptive creep is linear in stress. It is possible to take advantage of this feature. In the present report the pure moisture problem is first solved. The mechanical load is then treated as a perturbation of the solution to the moisture problem. Using this strategy, it is possible to linearize a non-linear network model for mechano-sorptive creep and to formulate a continuum model. As a result, the number of variables in the model is reduced. This is a significant improvement as it will be possible to use the linearized model to describe the material in a finite element program and solve problems with complicated geometries. Abstract: In nonlinear fracture mechanics testing of thin-sheet short-fiber composites, special problems occur that do not appear in other engineering materials, such as steels. The most important problem is the formation of a long process zone, where fiber pull-out, realignment and breakage occur, making an optical crack length measurement impossible. This impedes the determination of a reproducible value of the fracture toughness and the construction of a crack growth resistance curve. Two new approaches are presented to overcome this problem. In the first one, a procedure is presented to determine experimentally the cohesive zone relation on deeply-notched double-edge notch tension specimens. The cohesive zone relation enables us, together with the mechanical properties, to simulate numerically a fracture mechanics test on an arbitrary geometry and to determine a crack growth resistance curve. In the second approach, the displacements and strains around the process zone are measured during in situ experiments under an optical microscope using digital image analysis. With this local deformation analysis, a critical local strain is determined where the load bearing capacity of the material decreases to zero. The knowledge of this critical strain is used to find the location of the crack tip and to determine a crack growth resistance curve. The application of the two approaches is demonstrated on commercial printing paper as model material. An advanced stability analysis of surrounding rock can assure safe construction in tunnels. However, in traditional analysis methods, geometric information on the rock mass discontinuities is obtained by a geological compass and treated as an infinitely expanded plane in a numerical simulation, which is inaccurate in both geometric and numerical models. To solve this problem, this paper studied a control network and an image stitch method to assess the accuracy of a geometric model and proposed a more accurate method to obtain the geometric information of rock mass discontinuities based on digital photogrammetry. Based on discrete fracture network and discrete element method (DFN-DEM), this paper treated the rock mass discontinuities obtained by digital photogrammetry as finite disk planes and simulated the excavation process of the Qianyu tunnel. According to the simulation results, this paper determined the specific location of the collapse disaster on the tunnel face, which is of great significance to tunnel support design. Comparing the deformation of the surrounding rock mass on the tunnel face in the simulation results with the actual situation, this paper verified the feasible accuracy of this method in analysing the stability of the surrounding rock mass on a tunnel face in advance. A simple analytical model for calculating the nonlinear deformations of a corrugated core (fluting) during out-of-plane compression is developed. The results from the analytical model are compared to a more comprehensive finite-element model and to experiments. A connection between the boundary conditions and the damage state of the corrugated board is discussed. Including a modified set of boundary conditions gives an almost perfect match of the initial stiffness to the experimental results, indicating that the core might be significantly damaged as a result of the manufacturing process. Structural planes decrease the strength and stability of rock masses, severely affecting their mechanical properties and deformation and failure characteristics. Therefore, investigation and analysis of structural planes are crucial tasks in mining rock mechanics. The drilling camera obtains image information of deep structural planes of rock masses through high-definition camera methods, providing important data sources for the analysis of deep structural planes of rock masses. This paper addresses the problems of high workload, low efficiency, high subjectivity, and poor accuracy brought about by manual processing based on current borehole image analysis and conducts an intelligent segmentation study of borehole image structural planes based on the U2-Net network. By collecting data from 20 different borehole images in different lithological regions, a dataset consisting of 1,013 borehole images with structural plane type, lithology, and color was established. Data augmentation methods such as image flipping, color jittering, blurring, and mixup were applied to expand the dataset to 12,421 images, meeting the requirements for deep network training data. Based on the PyTorch deep learning framework, the initial U2-Net network weights were set, the learning rate was set to 0.001, the training batch was 4, and the Adam optimizer adaptively adjusted the learning rate during the training process. A dedicated network model for segmenting structural planes was obtained, and the model achieved a maximum F-measure value of 0.749 when the confidence threshold was set to 0.7, with an accuracy rate of up to 0.85 within the range of recall rate greater than 0.5. Overall, the model has high accuracy for segmenting structural planes and very low mean absolute error, indicating good segmentation accuracy and certain generalization of the network. Monitoring the deformation of long-span bridges is essential for assessing structural health and safety. The existing single-camera deformation measurement method is unable to meet the high-precision measurement requirement for the deformation of large-span bridges. This paper proposes a real-time deformation measurement method for the long-span bridge using multi-inertial camera system. The method is based on visual measurement which the target deformation is measured by multiple cameras. Meanwhile, inertial measurement is used to estimate the relative pose of the camera to compensate for camera motion errors. It is applied to the health monitoring system of a long-span bridge. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper is highly consistent with the hydrostatic leveling measurement, with a RMSE of 4.83mm. Due to the advance in digital image acquisition systems, optical methods for measurement have become more and more popular. The Moire effect is a well-known method which can be used to measure in-plane and out-of-plane deformations. Fourier transform moire method and grid method (FTMGM) is an excellent method for full-field, large in-plane deformation measurement, and can be implemented for the in-plane strain measurement of polymeric materials. An easy and inexpensive method to prepare gratings on specimens for FTMGM is presented. In order to demonstrate this method, a cross grating was generated and was put onto a notched photoelastic plastic sheet. Deformation effectively represents the structural integrity of concrete dams and acts as a clear indicator of their operational performance. Predicting deformation is critical for monitoring the safety of hydraulic structures. To this end, this paper proposes an artificial intelligence-based process for predicting concrete dam deformation. Initially, using the principles of feature engineering, the preprocessing of deformation safety monitoring data is conducted. Subsequently, employing a stacking model fusion method, a novel prediction process embedded with multiple artificial intelligence algorithms is developed. Moreover, three new performance indicators—a superiority evaluation indicator, an accuracy evaluation indicator, and a generalization evaluation indicator—are introduced to provide a comprehensive assessment of the model's effectiveness. Finally, an engineering example demonstrates that the ensemble artificial intelligence method proposed herein outperforms traditional statistical models and single machine learning models in both fitting and predictive accuracy, thereby providing a scientific and effective foundation for concrete dam deformation prediction and safety monitoring. Time series dynamic prediction of surface deformation in mining areas can provide reference data for coal mine safety and production, which has important impacts. The combination of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology and the probability integral method (PIM) is commonly used for predicting deformation. However, most surface subsidence prediction in mining areas is based on the static PIM parameters, failing to achieve the three-dimensional (3D) dynamic deformation prediction. This paper proposed a 3D deformation dynamic prediction model (InSAR-3D-CTPIM) between InSAR deformation observations and dynamic coordinate-time PIM (CTPIM) parameters, which can realize the prediction of east–west, north–south, and vertical series deformation caused by mining. The method has been validated by simulation experiments and real experiments in the mining area of Jiansheng Coal Mine in Baisha Reservoir, Henan Province, China. The results showed that the modeling accuracy was improved by 34.3% compared to the traditional multi-rate model, and the accuracy was improved by 28.5% compared to the vertical deformation obtained by the traditional static PIM method. The InSAR-3D-CTPIM model can be used to predict the evolutionary history of basin-wide surface deformation dynamics in coal mining areas, and provide a reference for the early warning and prediction of geological hazards in coal mining areas. Uneven settlement phenomenon is very easy to occur in the sandy pulverized ground stratum, the underground pipe corridor longitudinal and transverse stiffness difference is obvious, so that it is easy to crack and deformation due to uneven settlement in this type of stratum. This paper carries out research on uneven settlement and cracking and deformation of Qihe tube corridor, analyzes the reasons leading to uneven settlement and the factors affecting the deformation and cracking of the tube corridor, and provides guidance for foundation treatment and tube corridor repair and mixing and reinforcement. It was found that the concrete structure of the corridor itself had exposed reinforcement, pockmarks and holes, and that cracks on the structure of the corridor sprouted and expanded from these defects. Defects and damages on the concrete structure of the pipeline corridor are contributing factors to the deformation and cracking of the members, and the uneven settlement of the foundation is the main initiating factor for the cracking and deformation. The analysis of the numerical simulation results of similar underground pipeline corridors is carried out, and it is found that the simulation results are consistent with the deformation characteristics of the Qihe pipeline corridor, which further supports the conclusions of this paper. The main stratigraphic factors contributing to the inhomogeneous settlement were found to be the water-rich and loose bodies in the lower part of the strata, as revealed by the physical means and the experimental verification boreholes. Purpose: To investigate the changes in corrosion behaviour of severely deformed by accumulative roll bonding aluminium alloy AA1050. Design/methodology/approach: To determine the influence of the accumulative roll bonding on microstructure, texture, and grain size, electron backscattered diffraction was used. Corrosion behaviour was evaluated in a 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride water solution using anodic polarisation. Findings: It was found out that accumulative roll bonding up to eight cycles led to an increase in corrosion rate compared to annealed alloy, but the increase in the number of cycles of accumulative roll bonding from two to eight shows a tendency toward lowering corrosion rates. It has a beneficial influence on pitting corrosion susceptibility. Research limitations/implications: The presented research focuses only on the influence of texture and grain size on severely deformed aluminium alloy AA1050 corrosion. Other factors, such as accumulated during deformation stresses, could also play their role in the corrosion process. In the process of horizontal well construction, the working environment in the well is very complicated. It is difficult to determine the actual deformation and force of the coiled tubing in the wellbore from the load change at the wellhead along. In addition, the coiled tubing wrapped around the reel and entering the wellbore through the injection head may cause an initial residual bending. In this paper, the mathematical model of the coiled tubing under axial load during buckling deformation is established, and the analytical solution with the time term is derived by reasonable simplification of the model. The effect of residual bending on the post-sinusoidal buckling of the coiled tubing in the horizontal well was investigated using the separation variable method. The effect of residual bending variations on the well wall contact forces is analyzed. The research shows that the initial parameter Г is the main factor influencing the post-sinusoidal buckling of the coiled tubing with residual bending. The larger the parameter value Г, the greater the effect of the residual bending on the post-sinusoidal buckling deformation of the coiled tubing, and the earlier the critical point of the mixed sinusoidal-helical buckling of the coiled tubing appears. The compression velocity of the coiled tubing has a significant effect on the well wall contact force. The faster the compression, the greater the contact force. By introducing the time term and the separation variable, this paper provides a new method and theoretical basis for further study of the process of entering sinusoidal-helical buckling of the coiled tubing with initial residual bending. Persistent Scatterer InSAR (PS-InSAR) technology enables the monitoring of displacement in millimeters. However, without the use of external parameter correction, radar scatterers exhibit poor geopositioning precision in meters, limiting the correlation between observed deformation and the actual structure. The integration of PS-InSAR datasets and building databases is often overlooked in deformation research. This paper presents a novel strategy for matching between PS points and building contours based on spatial distribution characteristics. A convex hull is employed to simplify the building outline. Considering the influence of building height and incident angle on geometric distortion, an adaptive buffer zone is established. The PS points on a building are further identified through the nearest neighbor method. In this study, both ascending and descending TerraSAR-X orbit datasets acquired between 2016 and 2019 were utilized for PS-InSAR monitoring. The efficacy of the proposed method was evaluated by comparing the PS-InSAR results obtained from different orbits. Through a process of comparison and verification, it was demonstrated that the matching effect between PS points and building contours was significantly enhanced, resulting in an increase of 29.2% in the number of matching PS points. The results indicate that this novel strategy can be employed to associate PS points with building outlines without the need for complex calculations, thereby providing a robust foundation for subsequent building risk assessment. In this work we propose proof-of-concept methods to detect malfunctions of the braking system in passenger vehicles. In particular, we investigate the problem of detecting deformations of the brake disc based on data recorded by acceleration sensors mounted on the suspension of the vehicle. Our core hypothesis is that these signals contain vibrations caused by brake disc deformation. Since faults of this kind are typically monitored by the driver of the vehicle, the development of automatic fault-detection systems becomes more important with the rise of autonomous driving. In addition, the new brake boosters separate the brake pedal from the hydraulic system which results in less significant effects on the brake pedal force. Our paper offers two important contributions. Firstly, we provide a detailed description of our novel measurement scheme, the type and placement of the used sensors, signal acquisition and data characteristics. Then, in the second part of our paper we detail mathematically justified signal representations and different algorithms to distinguish between deformed and normal brake discs. For the proper understanding of the phenomenon, different brake discs were used with measured runout values. Since, in addition to brake disc deformation, the vibrations recorded by our accelerometers are nonlinearly dependent on a number of factors (such as the velocity, suspension, tire pressure, etc.), data-driven models are considered. Layered rock slope exists widely. Because of its special slope structure, it is prone to bending deformation and toppling failure, which is a serious threat to engineering construction and safety operation. At present, the research of layered rock slope still has great innovation potential. During the construction of Wudongde Hydropower Station on Jinsha River, safety and stability problems such as slope geological structure development, face rock unloading and relaxation, and even slip and large deformation were encountered. Through field exploration, it is found that the rock and soil stratification of the slope on both sides of Wudongde Hydropower Station is highly obvious. At present, there is a lack of research on-site long-term displacement monitoring of layered rock high-steep slope, especially for layered slope in complex hydrogeology and construction environment. In order to strengthen the research on the deformation and stability of layered rock slope, this paper analyzes the measured displacement data of Wudongde hydropower station slope, and establishes three-dimensional geological finite element model with the help of numerical simulation software. The stability of the slope is calculated by combining the finite difference method and the strength reduction method. Finally, the evolution mechanism of the deformation of the layered rock slope is explained according to the geological structure characteristics. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows: the layered slope in the dam reservoir area is prone to deformation under the combined action of long-term construction disturbance and fissure water seepage, and the construction disturbance has a strong influence on the artificial excavation area below 1070 m, and the maximum rock mass deformation and surface displacement in the artificial excavation area of the slope reach 92.2 mm and 312.5 mm, respectively. However, the influence of construction disturbance on the natural mountain above 1070 m is limited, the valley deformation of the natural mountain on the left bank of the reservoir area is higher than that on the right bank, and the cumulative deformation is still less than 20 mm. The influence of seepage on the displacement of the area with higher elevation at the top of the slope is more obvious, and the influence of excavation and other disturbances on the displacement of the artificial excavation area with lower elevation is more obvious. The deformation of the river valley in the water cushion pond behind the dam increases slowly, and the change trend of the field deformation data is mostly consistent with that of the numerical calculation. The horizontal shrinkage of the mountains on both sides shows a contraction trend on the whole, and the maximum horizontal shrinkage calculated by numerical simulation is close to 20 mm, which is located at the elevation of 990 m. The propulsion system for an aircraft is one of its most crucial systems; therefore, its reliable work must be ensured during all operational conditions and regimes. Modern materials, techniques and methods are used to ensure this goal; however, there is still room for improvement of this complex system. The proposed manuscript describes a progressive approach for the mechanical properties prediction of the turbine section during jet engine operation using an artificial neural network, and it illustrates its application on a small experimental jet engine. The mechanical properties are predicted based on the measured temperature, pressure and rpm during the jet engine operation, and targets for the artificial neural network are finite element analyses results. The artificial neural network (ANN) is trained using training data from the experimental measurements (temperatures, pressure and rpm) and the results from finite element analyses of the small experimental engine turbine section proposed in the paper. The predicted mechanical stress by ANN achieved high accuracy in comparison to the finite element analyses results, with an error of 1.38% for predicted mechanical stress and correlation coefficients higher than 0.99. Mechanical stress and deformation prediction of the turbine section is a time-consuming process when the finite element method is employed; however, the method with artificial neural network application presented in this paper decreased the solving time significantly. Mechanical structural analyses performed in ANSYS software using finite element modeling take around 30–40 min for one load step. The deformation behavior of deep excavations is affected by many factors, among which the geological conditions are greatly affected. Hangzhou Bay is affected by marine siltation and river alluvium, and the geological conditions within the urban area of Hangzhou are quite different. In this paper, the geological and deformation data of 79 deep excavation cases in the Hangzhou urban area were collected, and the statistical analysis showed that the deformation control of excavations in the silt area was poor. The average maximum lateral wall displacement of deep excavations of the Hangzhou urban area was 0.41%H (H was the depth of the excavation), the average value of the alluvial area was 0.22%H, and the average value of the silted area was 0.55%H. The influence of geological conditions, wall type, and construction period on the deformation of excavations was compared, and the deformation behavior of excavations in the silted area was clearly affected by various factors. The fracture network generated by hydraulic fracturing in unconventional shale reservoirs contains numerous microfractures that are connected to macroscopic fractures. These microfractures serve as crucial pathways for shale gas to flow out from micro- and nano-scale pores, playing a critical role in enhancing shale gas recovery. Currently, more attention is being given by academia and industry to the evolution of macroscopic fracture networks, while the understanding of the microfracture mechanisms and evolution is relatively limited. A significant number of microfractures are generated during the hydraulic fracturing process of shale. These microfractures subsequently propagate, merge, and interconnect to form macroscopic fractures. Therefore, studying the fracture process of rock masses from a microscale perspective holds important theoretical significance and engineering value. Based on the authors' research experience and literature review, this paper provides a brief overview of current progress in shale microfracture research from five aspects: in situ observation experiments of microfractures in shale, formation and evolution processes of discontinuous microfractures, the impact of inhomogeneity on microfracture propagation, measurement methods for microscale mechanical parameters and deformation quantities in shale, and numerical simulation of shale microfractures. This paper also summarizes the main challenges and future research prospects in shale microfracture studies, including: (1) quantitative characterization of in situ observation experimental data on shale microfractures; (2) formation and evolution laws of macroscopic, mesoscopic, and microscopic multi-scale discontinuous fractures; (3) more in-depth and microscale characterization of shale heterogeneity and its deformation and fracture mechanisms; (4) acquisition of shale micro-mechanical parameters; (5) refinement and accuracy improvement of the numerical simulation of microfractures in shale. Addressing these research questions will not only contribute to the further development of microfracture theory in rocks but also provide insights for hydraulic fracturing in shale gas extraction. The side pile is a crucial mechanical component in station construction using the PBA (pile-beam-arch) method, and its stability during the construction process cannot be overstated. The mechanical differences between single-row and double-row side piles in this construction method have garnered significant attention, yet few studies have been conducted on this matter. Therefore, this paper employs numerical simulation to compare the deformation and mechanical properties of single-row and double-row side piles (the adopted pile type is micro steel pipe pile, abbreviated as MSPP) in a metro station using the PBA method. The findings are validated through the model experiment. It is found that the soil arch effect created by the front-row pile of the double-row piles serves as the primary lining, offering a certain shielding effect to the soil stress behind the back-row pile. Notably, the soil stress values in double-row pile conditions are slightly higher compared to single-row pile condition, leading to a noticeably smaller final deformation of the pile top. The combined bending moments and axial forces of the front-row and back-row piles in double-row piles exceed those of a single-row pile. Specifically, bending moments are highest in single-row piles, followed by front-row piles and then back-row piles, while axial forces are highest in single-row piles, followed by back-row piles and then front-row piles. This suggests that the bending moments and axial forces of double-row piles are smaller than those of a single-row pile. The internal force distribution within the double-row pile is more balanced, thereby enhancing the lining strength and improving the station's safety through the PBA method. In the numerical simulation of earth-rock dam, accurate and reliable mechanical parameters of the dam material are the important basis for dam deformation predictions and dam safety evaluations. Based on the deformation monitoring data of Luding core wall rockfill dam, the rheological parameters of rockfill and core wall materials are inverted in this paper. Combined with the actual filling and impoundment process of the dam, the numerical simulation is carried out, and the stress deformation and differential settlement of the dam after completion and impoundment are analyzed. The results showed that the stress deformation results of the dam based on the inversion parameters were in good agreement with the actual deformation. The horizontal displacement, settlement, and principal stress of the dam during the completion period were symmetrically distributed along the core wall. The maximum horizontal displacement occurred at the main dam on both sides of the core wall and the upstream and downstream dam slopes, and the maximum settlement occurred in the middle of the core wall. During the impoundment period, under the action of reservoir water pressure and upstream rockfill wetting deformation, the deformation and stress of the dam body no longer met the symmetrical distribution law, and the maximum horizontal displacement of the dam body during the impoundment period was located at 2/3 of the upstream dam slope. The maximum settlement of the dam body was located at 1/2 of the dam height. The maximum principal stress on the upstream side of the core wall was located on the left side of the bottom of the core wall, and the minimum principal stress was also located on the left side of the bottom of the core wall. The simulation results of the deformation and stress met the general law of earth-rock dam engineering. During the completion period, the deformation inclination of the dam crest was less than 1%. During the impoundment period, the deformation inclination of the dam crest area increased due to the wetting deformation of the upstream rockfill material. At the same time, the deformation inclination of the dam crest axis was larger than that of the upstream and downstream sides, and the deformation inclination of the dam crest at the middle of the valley was the largest, but it did not exceed 3%, that is, there would be no longitudinal cracks, which is consistent with the actual situation.
