• Three characteristically different plasma structures viz. An unusual event of three characteristically different plasma structures on a geomagnetically quiet night (Ap = 4) of 08 July 2018 has been investigated in this paper using an all-sky imager installed at Hanle, Ladakh (32.7°N, 78.9°E; Mlat. ∼ 24.1°N), India. These structures include a freshly generated electrified medium scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (EMSTID), ambiguous plasma depletions, and a northward propagating non-electrified MSTID. One of the most fascinating aspects of this event was the lack of mutual interaction between the three structures, even though they existed simultaneously and propagated in different directions. They individually underwent evolution, distortion, and dissipation separately. One of the structures was an EMSTID, which got generated within the imager's field-of-view (FOV) and evolved with time. As time progressed, different strip-like structures travelled southwestward, merged with each other to form the EMSTID. The second structure was plasma depletions which appeared in the southeastern part of the FOV. They eventually merged into a single band, which propagated nearly westward. The merged band evolved with time, extended further northward, and dissipated later. Along with these, a very rare non-electrified MSTID structure with east–west aligned fronts was observed which propagated northward. Its fronts underwent distortion, became curved and dissipated. Receivers and intermediary establishments typical to urban areas have unique freight behaviour and are understudied, particularly in developing countries. This paper uses establishment-based freight survey data to examine their freight generation patterns in the Chennai metropolitan area, India. Three sets of Simple Linear Regression (SLR) models, three single predictor proportional odds logit models, one multiple linear regression model, and one multiple predictor proportional odds logit model with business size (employment, area, and operational age) and indicators of establishment category as regressors are developed each for both freight production and freight attraction. Partial proportional odds logit models are developed in a few cases to overcome the limitations of proportional odds logit models. The best SLR model varied with the establishment category for freight production and attraction. The establishment area model is the best among single predictor proportional odds logit models. The multiple predictor proportional odds logit models marginally improved the fit over single predictor models. The proportional odds logit model results show that the establishment category has a greater impact on freight generation levels than business size variables. Municipal solid waste generation in India is increasing as a result of rapid urbanisation and a growing population. Due to gaps in the existing waste collection, treatment and recovery methods, large-scale unscientific disposal and lesser waste recovery have been observed. Insufficient source segregation, unorganised efforts, less awareness and indifference towards malpractice, and a lack of strict implementation were identified as the causes through literature review, surveys and interviews, Therefore, there is a need for a system of interventions, which organises efforts toward waste management and reduces the tolerance for source segregation errors. This paper aims to provide a solution that increases community participation and prevents the generation of mixed waste to ensure waste recovery. The proposed framework integrates municipal solid waste, human elements, and technology into an intelligent app-based system. At the heart of India's livelihood lies agriculture, a foundational and ever-evolving sector. The realm of agriculture faces modern challenges, encompassing unpredictable climate fluctuations, insufficient irrigation infrastructure, and erratic weather conditions. Amidst these challenges, machine learning has emerged as a valuable tool for evaluating soil fertility and Crop assessment in agriculture. Ensemble machine learning methodologies have garnered attention for their potential to enhance predictive capabilities. These techniques involve constructing meta-classifiers that collectively contribute to improved predictive accuracy. This paper centers on the analysis of soil data acquired from testing laboratories, to predict fertility based on a comprehensive dataset. The study employs prominent ensemble machine learning algorithms, specifically focusing on boosting techniques, to elevate predictive accuracy and ensure heightened consistency. The assessment of soil fertility categories involved the examination of 12 carefully chosen attributes. Diverse soil parameters were measured to facilitate the prediction of soil fertility levels. The outcomes of the experimentation revealed that the application of the boosting technique using the Xgboost algorithm yielded superior accuracy compared to alternative ensemble classifiers, achieving a remarkable 96% accuracy rate. Recognizing specific characters from a large set of handwritten characters is called off-line character recognition. Devanagari, the reading and writing script, is widely used in a broad region of India. This paper proposes using the modified LeNet-5 architecture for recognizing Devanagari off-line handwritten characters using the Devanagari Handwritten Character Dataset (DHCD). The dataset comprises 46 distinct character classes, each with 2000 images. The proposed modified Lenet-5 Base Architecture (MLCNN8) uses more filters and kernels of small sizes with batch normalization. The proposed modified Lenet-5 Base Architecture (MLCNN8) outperformed the Lenet-5 Base Architecture (LCNN) with an accuracy of 99.21% in 53 epochs, whereas LCNN achieved an accuracy of 94.50% in 48 epochs. Hence, the proposed modified Lenet-5 architecture outperforms the Lenet-5 Base Architecture. Mushrooms are fungi that play significant roles in ecosystems, food, and medicine. However, distinguishing toxic mushrooms from non-toxic ones is challenging, as their visual characteristics can be misleading. Deep learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, offers a promising approach to detecting and classifying mushrooms based on their toxicity. By training deep neural networks on datasets of labelled mushroom images, it becomes possible to create models capable of accurately differentiating between toxic and non-toxic mushrooms. Mushrooms are fungi that play significant roles in ecosystems, food, and medicine. However, manually distinguishing toxic mushrooms from non-toxic ones is a challenging and time-consuming task. This research work is to help the local farmers and exporters to identify the difference between the toxic and the edible mushroom which will eventually boost production and will directly have an impact on the economic growth in India. This paper compared different deep learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Resnet50, YOLO V5 and Alexnet, which have been found to be the most useful in classifying the mushrooms effectively as toxic and non-toxic respectively. The patterns in the images of the mushrooms have been predicted through the above classifiers. The validation techniques show SVM to be the most effective with an accuracy of 83%. Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy, accounting for 1 % of all cancers 1. The genetic syndromes associated with differentiated thyroid cancers(DTC) are Cowden syndrome, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis(FAP), Carney's complex, Pendred syndrome and Werner syndrome2. The incidence of synchronous second primary tumors(SSPC) associated with oropharyngeal malignancies was 1 to 10 %3. The incidence of other malignancies other than the above syndromes occurring synchronously with DTC is very rare. Only a few case reports and series are available. The incidence of synchronous second primary cancer(SSPC) with Differentiated Thyroid Cancers(DTC) is a very rare entity. Very few case reports and case series were published in the literature. The current study is aimed to enumerate the clinicopathological data of patients with DTC with SSPC. This is a single-center retrospective study. All the patients diagnosed with DTC and SSPC from January 2016 to July 2023 were included in the study. The demographic, clinicopathological data and survival data were collected from the institute's database. Patients were followed up telephonically and survival status was documented. Synchronous cancers are defined as more than one independent primary malignancy when the second(or third) cancer occurs within six months of diagnosis of the first malignancy4. [Display omitted] A total of 1395 patients were diagnosed with thyroid cancer during the study period. Twelve patients were found to have DTC with SSPC. All the patients had papillary thyroid cancer as primary DTC. Ten patients had head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, one had malignant phyllodes tumor, and another patient with endometrioid adenocarcinoma as the SSPC. Six patients diagnosed during preoperative evaluation, one patient diagnosed 3 months after the oral malignancy diagnosis and five patients were diagnosed to have PTC in cervical nodes after neck dissection. Complete thyroid removal was done in six patients and hemithyroidectomy in two patients. Among the patients who underwent total thyroidectomy, four patients had undergone radioactive iodine scan followed by radioactive iodine ablation for two patients. Three patients had died during follow-up, two patients was lost to follow-up and the rest of the seven patients were alive. Out of those alive one patient had a follow-up of less than six months and was excluded from the survival calculation. The median follow up was 25.55 months. The median overall survival was 40.97 months. DTC constitute 95% of thyroid malignancies. Five to fifteen percent of DTC has familial disease. The genetic syndromes associated with DTC are FAP, PTEN syndromes(Cowden syndrome, Bannayan- Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome, PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome), Werner syndrome, Carney complex, DICER1 syndrome, Pendred syndrome, Ataxia telangiectasia, Li Fraumeni syndrome, and Peutz Jeghers syndrome5. But, synchronous occurrence of a second malignancy with DTC is a rare phenomenon. In the present study, the most common SSPC was SCC of the head and neck region(83.3%). 5 patients had incidental detection of thyroid cancer in cervical lymph nodes which were dissected during neck dissection done for other causes. L J Fliegelman et al published a paper on four cases of incidentally detected thyroid malignancy in cervical nodes6. Ansari-Lari et al also published cases of incidentally diagnosed PTC on cervical lymph nodes7. In the present study, one patient had synchronous papillary thyroid carcinoma with a malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast. No such case was found reported in the literature during our literature search. In the present study, we reported a case of synchronous endometrioid adenocarcinoma with PTC. Badan Marius-loan et al reported one case of PTC with endometrioid carcinoma8. Patients with Cowden syndrome can have thyroid carcinoma and endometrial carcinoma9. The overall survival of the study group was 40.97 months. Biopsy-proven SCC recurrence was seen in two patients out of four patients with clinically documented recurrence. In the literature review on case series and case reports, it was concluded that the prognosis of the patient depends on the staging of oral synchronous primary and the treatment of thyroid cancer must be decided based on oral malignancy staging and treatment. In conclusion SSPC with DTC is a very rare phenomenon. SCC of the head and neck region is the most common synchronous second primary malignancy associated with DTC. As there are no published guidelines for this clinical scenario, a multi-disciplinary panel discussion is a must to decide regarding management considering the staging and weighing the treatment benefit for both malignancies. In this paper, we show that the village social structure shapes the learning outcome of marginalised children in rural India. Exploiting the variation in the dominant social group in the village, we find a significant impact of village dominance. The reading and arithmetic skills of Scheduled Castes are better in their own castes-dominated villages compared to higher castes-dominated villages. Our findings show that village dominance affects learning outcomes primarily through differential teachers' behaviour. Children from marginalised castes are more likely to be scolded, beaten up, and treated unfairly by teachers in villages dominated by higher castes compared to their own castes. We do not find evidence of other mechanisms like the difference in parent and children's aspirations, caste diversity, discrimination in the village, or positive group externalities, which could explain why children from Scheduled Castes fare better in their own castes-dominated villages. As the IoT expands the network of devices, it also increases the hazards with increasing demands. This paper aims to propose an efficient model with the combination of interdisciplinary aspects of Indian building automation and numerous factors of Indian cultural differences. The proposed fuzzy-colored Petri-nets-based ubiquitous framework utilizes the capabilities of ubiquity for the diversified culture of Indian Building Automation systems. The proposed algorithms establish the Wi-Fi component connectivity and the working of the LED pin. Further, the modules of the Wi-Fi component connectivity, set up function and get values function to illustrate the working principle of the proposed model. Firstly, exports stimulate growth through the investment channel independent of the direction of change in trade balance. Secondly, in contrast to the Bhaduri-Marglin type investment functions, the sign of profit share coefficient in investment function becomes ambiguous. • The structurally-biased investment function is tested for the registered manufacturing sector in India by conducting a panel-data exercise. It is found to be valid under alternative specifications. The coefficient for profit share is found to be statistically insignificant. • The analytical framework is used to classify export regimes into three distinct categories-BOT-improving, BOT-balancing and BOT-deteriorating. The nature of export regime of a country is argued to depend on income distribution parameters, import propensity and investment responsiveness to home demand and exports. The results suggest that the informal segment of manufacturing has been a drag on overall manufacturing productivity growth, with the informal manufacturing segment unable to provide a productivity bonus when absorbing workers from the agricultural sector. Results from the shift-share analysis indicate that labor reallocation to the informal segment of the manufacturing sector is growth-reducing, with structural change being the main source of this reduction, an effect which in turn is driven by movements of employment within manufacturing sub-sectors. We also focus on the environmental behavior of firms classified according to their ownership structure observing that government-owned firms (GOFs) tend to rely less on their internal and debt capital to finance their environmental investment, whereas private-owned firms (POFs) rely mainly on their internal capital. This paper investigates household task allocation decisions for non-work activity episodes by activity purpose and accompanying person arrangements. The paper utilizes activity-travel behavior information of all adult members (above 19 years) from a family to model the activity episodes aggregated at the household level. Such an approach gives a better perspective on the latent propensity of household members to engage in out-of-home activities. The nature (substitution or complementary) of the inter- and intra-group interaction between household and non-household members is examined using a multivariate ordered probit model estimated on activity-travel behavior survey data, consisting of 1335 households and 3639 adult individuals, collected in Bhubaneswar Municipal Region, India. The exploratory analysis sheds light on the preferences of household members for pursuing an activity episode (shopping, pure escort, other maintenance, physically active recreation, and physically passive recreation) either alone or jointly with immediate family members or non-household (extended family members or members from social circle) members. The correlation matrix consisting of 19 dimensions suggests significant inter-group substitution effects across the four accompaniment types for different non-work activities. The intra-group effects are complementary in the case of joint pursuits highlighting the likelihood of adult household members adhering to the same accompanying group. The model also suggests that the effect of individual characteristics, household socio-demographics, and seasonal and temporal characteristics are more impactful than vehicle ownership and built environment features. Informal public transport is generally understood as transport services that are provided in absence or violation of state regulations. This paper argues that attempts to define the informality of public transport through such liberal economic lenses are insufficient in explaining the processes which lead to production of informalities. Discussing the operation of Vikrams (individually-owned and privately-operated shared autorickshaws plying on fixed routes) in Dehradun, India, this paper uncovers the multifaceted role of the state in producing and sustaining informalities in public transport provisions. It offers a more nuanced view of informality in transport studies than its commonplace understanding as a spontaneous, self-regulating, entrepreneurial aggregate. The paper argues that informality in transport studies should be understood as a heterogeneous practice that is a product of wider structural contexts situated in the politico-historical understandings of public transport in evolving spatio-temporal moments. The impact of COVID-19 on the Global scale is tremendously drastic. There are several types of research going on across the world simultaneously to understand and overcome this dire pandemic outbreak. This paper is purely a statistical study on a distinct set of datasets regarding COVID-19 in India. The motivation of this study is to provide an insight into the rapid growth of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India. The rapid growth of COVID-19 cases in India started in March 2020. The main objective of this paper is to provide a solid statistical model for the policymaker to handle this kind of pandemic situation in the near future with nonlinear data. In this paper, the data was got from 1st April to 29th November 2020. To come up with a solid statistical model, various nonlinear data such as confirmed COVID-19 cases, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, the total population (state-wise), the total area in km2 (state-wise), and the total rural and urban population count (state-wise) have been analyzed. In this paper, six different Generalized Additive Models (GAM) was identified after a thorough analysis of other researchers' (Xie and Zhu, 2020; Prata et al., 2020) findings. In all perspectives, the results were identified and analyzed. The GAM model regarding total COVID-19 confirmed cases, total population, and the total rural population provides the best average fit of R2 value of 0.934. As the population value is quite high, the author has concise it using logarithm to provide the best p -value of 0.000542 and 0.001407 for a relation between the total number of COVID-19 cases regarding the total population and total rural population respectively. Recent decades have seen progressive reform of inheritance laws towards gender equality, both globally and in South Asia. Yet, a wide gender gap persists in actual ownership due to family resistance to endowing daughters with property. Given this, do women use courts to claim their rights across regions? Who are the opposing parties? What kind of property is most disputed? How long do cases take? To what extent do judgements favour women, and does the language of judgements reveal gender stereotypes? No prior study has addressed these questions. This paper does so for India. Here, under the Hindu Succession Amendment Act of 2005 (HSAA 2005), Hindu women achieved legal equality in inheritance rights over all property, including agricultural land and coparcenary joint family property (JFP) in which they now have direct shares by birth. To analyse women's use of courts to claim their coparcenary shares, we draw on the four main online data sources to extract 505 cases (from over 2900 examined) relating to women coparceners, where judgements were delivered in High Courts over 2005–2020. Brothers were the most commonly listed opponents to women's claims and most of the disputes related to land, especially agricultural. In 77% of the cases filed by women or against them, the rulings granted women some share in parental property. But only in 52% of these positive rulings did they receive their direct shares in JFP, while receiving property through other rights in the rest. The legal route thus holds some promise of positive outcomes, but progress specifically in the implementation of the HSAA 2005 remains limited. This will require activating new channels of support for women. This paper investigates the spatial spillover effects of built environment features on household car and motorcycle ownership through aggregate ward-level analysis and household-level disaggregated analysis. Using a primary data collected in Hubli-Dharwad city in Southern India, the paper estimates Spatial Durbin models to assess the direct and spillover effects of socio-economic characteristics (household income, the number of children and household size), built environment characteristics (population density, diversity, distance, and subjective built environment measures), travel attitudes (pro-car, pro-NMT and pro-public transport), and commute behavior (distance and time) on household car and motorcycle ownership. The paper finds that spatial dependencies exist in both aggregate and disaggregate levels of analysis. There is a significant spatial dependency in car ownership due to household income, household size, the number of children, and pro-car attitude, and the correlations are significant in both aggregate and disaggregate levels of analysis. The positive lag effects of these variables suggests that socio-economic settings and attitudes of neighboring wards affect car and motorcycle ownership in a ward. The effects of diversity on car and motorcycle ownership maintain similar correlations in both levels of analysis. The likelihood of motorcycle ownership increases with improvements in diversity, while car ownership likelihood decreases. Based on the results, an optimal low-cost design is proposed in order for everyone to fulfil the minimum power needs. The paper presents an optimal size strategy for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) for the low power rural household application. The solar microinverter based PV System has been designed based on the daily load needs for one of the proposed layout plans of the (Gramin) Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna adopted by Government of India. The proposed designs are also applicable for other developing nations. The proposed micro-inverter has been tested under different operating conditions and experimental validation proves its superiority over other inverter types, particularly for a low power application, as is the case for a typical low-income rural household. Economic considerations such as payback period has also been evaluated in this study. The paper revisits the Porter-Wagner dilemma about the association between environmental management (EM) and firm performance (FP). The context of informal Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) provides an interesting case since they are away from regulatory scrutiny or corporate/social obligations. The study resorts to labor productivity as the measure of FP and EM is represented by the various solid waste management practices (WMPs) adopted by the informal enterprises. Using the latest available cross-sectional data on un-incorporated firms by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) 73rd round 2015-16, we found the positive impact of WMPs was higher in the case of more productive firms in the quantile, indicating the relevance of the Porter-Wagner dilemma. In this paper, we focus on the stochastic modeling of a novel epidemiological (susceptible-infected-recovered-deceased) SIRD model with imperfect immunity based on a continuous-time Markov process adapted to the characteristics of the epidemic model. We investigate several novel stochastic properties of the SIRD scheme that are both population- and individual-oriented, such as the extinction and alert time of an epidemic, in parallel with the infection and mortality times of a tagged individual. We provide propositions and detailed recursive algorithms for computing probabilities and moments, giving additional information beyond the mean and variance of the stochastic quantities. Important remarks for representing higher-order matrices and system solving are provided, decreasing significantly the operation time of these algorithms. Extensive sensitivity analysis gives light to the influence of the system's parameters, while enhancing the validity of our methodology. Unlike other analyses that focus mainly on fitting the evolution of various diseases, our goal is to complement these studies by highlighting additional noteworthy features that determine an epidemic's future. The proposed methodology is applied on the monkeypox outbreak of 2022 in India and the first COVID infection wave in Barbados. Finally, public health authorities can use the information provided by these indicators to adjust the duration of lockdowns, accordingly, achieving the best possible balance between health benefits and economic disadvantages. Trip-based models and activity-based models represent two extreme ends of the spectrum of travel demand models in data granularity requirement and ability to reflect the underlying motivation to travel. Modelling of representative freight activity-travel patterns (RFAPs) has the potential to serve as the bridge between these approaches. RFAP clusters represent homogeneous groups of establishments, where utility maximization models predict the probability that an establishment belongs to a particular cluster. However, it is still an open question how to define, interpret and model activity-travel patterns in the context of freight system. To answer this question, this study conducted a large-scale establishment-based freight survey (EBFS) in seven cities of India and resulted in a sample of 432 establishments and their 1613 shipment records. In the first part, this paper proposes a novel approach for identifying RFAPs based on the notion that "activities" that inspire trip-making for passenger is equivalent to "freight orders" in the case of establishments. The cluster analyses revealed the presence of three well separated main clusters and nine less separated nested clusters. Through interpretation and labelling of these RFAPs, freight travel market is categorized into useful segments. The results suggested that a priori industrial classification systems used in trip-based models are overly simplified representations of the complex structure of the travel patterns. In the last part, freight activity-travel pattern generation (FAPG) models are developed which predicts the probability that an establishment exhibits a particular RFAP. The FAPG models developed using these RFAPs could replace the traditional freight generation (FG) and freight trip generation (FTG) models due to its ability to convert the assigned activity-patterns to trips or tonnage. For example, FAPG model suggest that at an employment level of 120, there is a 56% probability that establishments will exhibit MDV-HFMH (medium duty vehicles - high frequency medium haul) pattern which, in turn, implies that FP = 1630 tons/year; shipment frequency, i.e., FTP = 8 trips/week; length of haul = 240.6 km and commercial vehicle type choice = MDV. Thus, FAPG models can present an enhanced representation of freight flows since both FG and FTG are jointly modeled in this approach. That is, the best features of both commodity-based modelling (i.e., ability to capture the fundamental mechanism that drives freight demand) and vehicle-based modelling (i.e., ability to capture freight traffic implications) are included in FAPG models. The study findings are expected to assist in identifying the variations in establishments' preferences so that it is possible to identify the type of transport supply improvements that the establishments will respond to accurately, and thus prioritize the infrastructure investments. A disability service organization piloted a parent capacity-building intervention for parents of children with developmental disabilities in rural South India. To examine the impact of this parent capacity-building group intervention on parent empowerment, peer support, social inclusion, advocacy skills, and the factors influencing these outcomes. A qualitative study recruited 37 participants from 17 parent groups through convenience sampling. Six focus groups occurred six months post the start of this intervention and explored these parents' experiences with the groups and their perceived impacts. Qualitative analysis yielded four main themes and corresponding sub-themes: peer support (feeling peaceful and supported, building self-efficacy), social inclusion (space to share, acceptance and identity), knowledge sharing (increasing awareness, accepting advice), and advocacy (building confidence, making requests). Participation in parent groups provided participants with opportunities to find peer support, utilize knowledge sharing, feel socially included, and build advocacy skills. This study provides a greater understanding of the impact and benefits of parent capacity-building interventions in low-resource settings. Results will improve this intervention and guide other organizations in creating similar programs. The proliferation of wastes such as single-use plastics has escalated pollution along the coastline, demanding coordinated, decisive, and unified action. A group of experts and stakeholders was involved through a multi-staged workshop to assess the generated information based on scientific evidence and formulate a framework for the National Marine Litter Policy (NMLP). The SCATSAT-1 (Scatterometer Satellite) was launched by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) on September 26, 2016 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, India. With nearly five years of its journey, the Ku-band (13.5 GHz) based SCATSAT-1 made a profound impact on many scientific domains such as ocean-atmosphere dynamics, soil moisture and vegetation dynamics, climate change, hydrology and polar sea-ice and snowmelt studies. As a successor of the Oceansat-2 Scatterometer (OSCAT), the SCATSAT-1 supports the long-term analysis in climate studies, crop yield prediction, and forecasting analysis. In addition, the SCATSAT-1 provides the four different levels of data products at an enhanced resolution to improve the scope of the scatterometer in different applications. Recently the SCATSAT-1 has been explored in many emerging applications apart from oceanography e.g., crop growth, snow cover analysis, jute crop detection and river level estimation with advanced algorithms i.e., machine learning-based classification, information fusion, and super-resolution mapping. Therefore, it is desired to summarise all operational SCATSAT-1 products, applications, and their emerging trends at the global level in the various scientific domains. The former enclaves of Bangladesh and India existed as de facto stateless spaces for almost seventy years before they were exchanged and merged with the host state territories in 2015. Because of their extra-territorial existence, land ownership and transactions remained effectively a local affair in the enclaves. After the exchange, however, enclaves became regular parts of the state territory, and the host state officially recognized private ownership of enclave land. Drawing on fourteen months of ethnographic research in India's ex-enclaves inside Bangladesh, in this paper, I shed light on the complex and multi-layered process of land formalization. As such, I offer a lens of flexible land to comprehend how the state and the citizens employ numerous resources and tactics in claiming and formalizing land that becomes the simultaneous reasons and results of its flexibility. In so doing, I argue that the key to our understanding of flexible land lies in an attentive reading of legibility, sovereignty, and negotiation in a post-colonial context, especially in South Asia. Thus, flexible land becomes an innovative lens, explained and developed throughout this paper, to address how flexibility functions as an embodiment of land formalization for the citizens and the state in the former enclaves of India inside Bangladesh. As it has been increasingly replaced by paddy in recent decades, this paper asks what this shift in cropping pattern reflects about the state's agrarian capitalism. Towards an analysis of this question, it builds on James Scott's idea of 'political crops' in the earliest states and places it in conversation with scholarship in critical agrarian studies, political ecology and commodity studies to account for relations of power under contemporary capitalism. Drawing on intensive primary research in the region, the paper contrasts the power relations generated by the production and circulation of the two crops. It shows that larger farmers are more likely to cultivate paddy due to better access to irrigation, and that the shift to paddy is threatening to make redundant the labour of landless Dalit women, who do cotton-picking, and increasing dependence on migrant male labour for paddy-transplanting. It also demonstrates how the different end uses of the two crops and the predominance of the private sector in the cotton markets versus the hitherto state-led nature of the paddy markets produce differential risks for farmers and traders. The paper concludes by suggesting that the shift from cotton to paddy represents capital intensification in response to Punjab's mature capitalist conditions in agriculture but also results in new contradictions and axes of political struggle. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has provided the most important set of guidelines for web accessibility which is popularly known as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). The accessibility analysis of higher education websites becomes paramount important to make them inclusive considering the growing number of enrollments of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in higher education, in countries such as India. This paper presents the accessibility analysis of higher education websites with the case study of college websites (N = 44) affiliated with the University of Kashmir and Cluster University Srinagar. The study has been carried out with two major accessibility evaluation tools called web accessibility test, denoted as TAW and the accessibility engine powering browser extensions called the accessibility engine, denoted as aXe. This paper lists the major accessibility barriers exposed by these sites in terms of metrics such as a number of problems, warnings and a status of success criteria violations. With respect to TAW tool, a number of problems observed were 2646, a large number of warnings to the scale of 15995 and the not reviewed items were 1356. With aXe tool, the total violations observed were 1951 and items needing review were 1733. Findings of the statistical analysis are also presented in this paper. • Smoldering and ignition temperature were determined for aged waste components. • Spontaneous ignition time of aged waste for field-scale was determined. • A correlation was established between ignition time and moisture content. • Spontaneous ignition was dependent on the heat gained at the dumpsite surface. Open municipal solid waste (MSW) dumpsites in India are significant hotspots of spontaneous fire and associated air and ground water pollution. Unscientific dumping of MSW poses a major threat to the surrounding environment and human health. One-year-old biodegradable waste components comprised of paper, cardboard, newspaper, textile, wood, grass leaves and coconut shell were analyzed for the determination of the moisture content (MC), smoldering temperature, ignition temperature, and ignition time. Principal component analysis of the old waste components revealed that cardboard, paper, newspaper and leaves are most susceptible waste components for spontaneous ignition. In contrast, MC was the most influential parameter for resulting changes in ignition temperature (0C) on ignition time (min). A numerical equation was developed to estimate the time required for the spontaneous waste ignition at MSW dumpsite. The results of the study showed that the aged waste (age ≥ 3 year) having MC below 6 % and initial surface temperature of 78 0C might smolder and ignite during the hottest time of the day in ∼ 6 and ∼ 26 days, respectively. Estimates showed that the time required for spontaneous waste ignition of aged waste is moderately dependent on waste MC (∼5–55 %), surface temperature (∼40–100 0C), monthly pattern of average high temperature (∼36.6–42.6 0C), biodegradable waste components having smoldering temperature ≤ 150 0C and ignition temperature ≤ 270 0C. The present study also showed that the occurrence of landfill fire events at MSW dumpsites is more prominent during the pre-monsoon season i.e. during the elevated temperature level. The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, which is scheduled to launch in 2022, would offer India with unprecedented hydrologic applications. This study presents the preliminary results of the CNES Large-Scale SWOT Hydrology Simulator to illustrate how SWOT data can be used to monitor reservoir water levels. Except for some factors such as effects due to topography, and error due to idealized water detection, the CNES simulator accounts for practically all of the probable noise expected in future SWOT data. In this paper, we look at how SWOT can be used to monitor reservoirs in difficult situations. SWOT will monitor the reservoir in two swaths in this case, with an unmonitored zone in the middle. This paper provides a strategy for extrapolating data across two swaths to determine reservoir volume. The results demonstrate that the proxy water surface elevation (WSE) created by the CNES simulator has a great potential in scientific research relating to reservoir characteristics and surface water dynamics. As planners and policymakers in cities around the world struggle to attract and retain public transit users, this paper explores strategies to promote transit adoption in contexts where the odds are stacked against transit. Using travel behavior data from India's National Capital Region – one of the most congested metropolitan areas globally that is experiencing unprecedented growth in personal vehicle ownership and plummeting transit ridership – this study analyzes the choice of intra-urban (metro) rail over personal car for commute trips within a specific population sub-group that is fast adopting the personal car and exiting the transit market. The objective of this mode choice analysis that employs both logistic regression modeling and the propensity-score matching technique is to identify multi-modal service quality/performance factors that determine metro rail vs. car choice, and thereby recommend efficient and effective interventions for inducing car-to-transit switches in addition to retaining existing transit riders. Results suggest that increasing metro rail's travel time competitiveness relative to car (particularly for long distance commuters), service frequency and safety level, and raising car parking cost at the destination can increase the likelihood of choice of metro rail over car in the study context. Interestingly, increase in traffic congestion and travel time unreliability of the car mode are not expected to automatically boost the demand for metro rail use, all else equal. As the momentum towards more car adoption continues, this study shows that deteriorating traffic conditions may not push drivers out of cars; rather, public transit has to step up and pull drivers out of cars. For planners and policymakers, this study indicates that rather than passively waiting for driving conditions to worsen, they should proactively invest in transit service quality improvements. This study also highlights the importance of communicating service changes to the traveling public in order to efficiently translate interventions to behavior changes, given the dissonance between travelers' perceptions of multi-modal travel conditions and actual travel conditions. This paper further demonstrates that analysis of travelers' perception errors, including variation in error across travelers, is important for accurately modeling travel behavior changes in response to interventions. This paper addresses ongoing work on the Palaeolithic archaeology of the Wainganga basin, Central India, focusing on investigating the nature of the occupation, technological changes, and transitions through time, with a view towards understanding Palaeolithic behaviour. Surveys conducted over an area of 19,696 sq. km in this region, led to the discovery of 30 sites of the Acheulian and Late Palaeolithic with sparse evidence, as yet of the Middle Palaeolithic. Acheulian sites are deeply stratified within regoliths, but owing to recent exposures, several sites could be investigated in detail. This paper addresses preliminary research at a few of the Acheulian sites in this region, establishing their stratigraphic context and lithic assemblage structure. The assemblages studied suggest deliberate choices in the selection of raw materials involving the transport of tools/flakes for more than 15 km to specific sites where they were used. This is reflected by the absence of giant cores and sparse waste products at several sites studied. There is a preference for cleavers and the use of Kombewa technologies. The paper discusses the technological aspects of the assemblages and the importance of studying micro-regions when investigating broader patterns of hominin behavioral changes in the South Asian Acheulian. Lightning is a sudden release of electrostatic energy that plays a significant role in the ionospheric-magnetospheric coupling process. A short-term increase in the particle count rates (CR) in the Van Allen Radiation Belt (VAB) is known as the particle bursts. Due to lightning events, the increase in the number of high-energy particles in the inner region of the VAB (L < 2) is a fascinating research to implement. This paper tries to determine the number of lightning-induced particles, which can successfully establish a connection between the two regions of the atmosphere (the ionosphere and the magnetosphere). Lightning-generated electromagnetic radiation propagates through the Earth Ionosphere Waveguide (EIWG), where some energy leaks through and scatters particles in the radiation belt. By lowering the pitch angle, some particles precipitate into the ionosphere and cause secondary ionization. This excess particle count caused by lightning strokes is detected using data from the NOAA-15 satellite and data from the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) is used to verify the relationship between lightning stroke and particle count. In this paper, we process our work by using lightning locations over a specific region of India and the geographic/geomagnetic conjugate locations. The monthly variation shows a high correlation between the lightning stroke number and the particle counts within the conjugate geomagnetic location, while the correlation with the particle counts within the conjugate geographic location is significantly lower. In the second half of the paper, we use an automated energy filtration method, for the computation of the particle counts induced by maximum energetic lightning (having lightning energy value > 104 J and the particle counts induced by minimum energetic lightning (having lightning energy value < 104 J). The results of this analysis demonstrate that the variation of PCs in the conjugate geomagnetic location is more closely related to the maximum energetic lightning variation than the lowest energetic lighting variation. We highlight scientific blunders in the article published by Mishra et al. (2020). The authors have completely missed the location of Vigodi Fault (VF) along with misidentification of meso-scale structures. The paleostress analysis is based on insufficient field data (14 fault-slip measurements) collected along other faults and results are mutually contradictory, poor quality and highly unreliable. Two domes, not located along the VF are wrongly analyzed. We note that couple of figure captions and some parts of the paper are plagiarized from Vanik et al. (2018) and Biswas (1993). The slip history of VF inferred by Mishra et al. (2020) completely contradicts previously well-established structural facts. We reanalyzed fault-slip data of Mishra et al. (2020) and reached much different results. We conclude that the field data, paleostress analysis and interpretations in the paper by Mishra et al. (2020) are erroneous and do not belong to the VF. Increasing penetration of renewable electricity in the power systems coupled with reduction in its cost has resulted in increased interest in green hydrogen globally. Industry has been using fossil fuel-based hydrogen as an input for several decades. This paper makes an assessment of existing hydrogen production capacities in petroleum refineries and ammonia synthesis units in India along with estimating the potential for installing solar photovoltaic (SPV) powered alkaline electrolysers for producing green hydrogen and SPV capacity required for this purpose. Levelised cost of hydrogen production in these industries in India has been analysed and found to be competitive. The paper also discusses about water requirement, land requirement for SPV power plants, CO 2 emissions avoided and likely investment to be made for establishing infrastructure for green hydrogen production. India's Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) is the largest public-works based rural livelihood programme in the world. One of the important policy objectives of the Scheme is to curb rural out-migration by guaranteeing demand-driven employment opportunities for 100 days in a year in rural areas. This paper uses a large sample survey-based nationally representative data set and different probability models to investigate how MGNREGS influences individuals' seasonal rural out-migration decisions. The results reveal that contrary to the policy objective, participation , the extent of participation and earnings from the Scheme increases an individual's propensity to out-migrate. However, the Scheme serves broader and equally critical socio-economic goals of empowerment through income security and positive network effects. MGNREGS, on the one hand, significantly drives the decisions of aspirational migration of rural individuals, particularly females and the relatively advantaged. On the other, it curbs distress migration of the relatively disadvantaged by providing them with basic livelihood opportunities within the rural areas. With countries increasingly adopting the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as their system of commodity taxes replacing the myriad of sales, excise and other form of indirect taxes, there is a move towards the two features that characterize the GST: uniform tax rates across items and identical tax rates across regions. When India introduced the GST in 2017, it followed several other countries in departing from the first feature but in keeping with universal practice embraced the second feature. The chief motivation of this paper is to subject this latter feature to critical scrutiny. The study examines the four GST rates in India by comparing them with counterfactual evidence based on preference based optimal commodity tax rates estimated by taking into account regional diversity in prices and spending. The benchmarking suggests that the current top GST rates (12%, 16% and 28%) are much higher than can be justified by the optimal rates. The Indian evidence is also in favor of departing from the universal practice in GST of adopting a uniform tax across items. The paper makes a methodological contribution by proposing a procedure for calculating spatial prices that can be applied to a wide basket of items. The study provides evidence on the redistributive potential of indirect taxation by showing the progressive nature of the optimal commodity taxes. The latter result is of particular significance in developing countries where indirect taxes raise the greater share of revenue and provide an important policy tool for tackling increasing inequality. The study concludes with a list of policy lessons as the country seeks to make further changes to its GST. While there is a significant literature on harmonization of indirect taxes across countries that belong to a single economic grouping such as the EU, there is no such literature between regions within a large heterogeneous country. A series of radiotracer experiments was carried out to measure residence time distribution (RTD) of liquid phase (alkali) in an industrial-scale continuous pulp digester in a paper industry in India. Bromine-82 as ammonium bromide was used as a radiotracer. Experiments were carried out at different biomass and white liquor flow rates. The measured RTD data were treated and mean residence times in individual digester tubes as well in the whole digester were determined. The RTD was also analyzed to identify flow abnormalities and investigate flow dynamics of the liquid phase in the pulp digester. Flow channeling was observed in the first section (tube 1) of the digester. Both axial dispersion and tanks-in-series with backmixing models preceded with a plug flow component were used to simulate the measured RTD and quantify the degree of axial mixing. Vanda stangeana Rchb. f. is an endemic species of Manipur, India. Its flowers are greenish-yellow, 5 cm in size with a pink mid-lobe, tessellated in chestnut brown color and tough texture with a long shelf life. Phalaenopsis hygrochila J.M.H. Shaw is a large-sized, hot to cool growing, epiphytic orchid with sturdy, 20 to 40 cm, more or less flattened stem with elliptic-oblong leaves. The flowers are fragrant, pale greenish yellow, more or less dotted with brown or brown-red, with a whitish or white base, waxy, long-lasting, up to 6 cm in diameter, column white, labellum slightly purplish purple, paler towards the margins. Both plants are included under CITES' Appendix II. The current study concentrates on a hybridization program involving two vandaceous orchid genera, namely Vanda stangeana and Phalaenopsis hygrochila to investigate their cross-ability and molecular confirmation of the synthesized hybrid using SSR and SCoT marker system. MS medium at half-strength enriched with 0.5 mg/L NAA + 0.5 mg/L Kn was the optimal medium for the development of the synthesized hybrid seedlings with the longest shoot (2.6 cm), the maximum number of leaves (4.5), leaf length (2.5 cm) and highest number of root (4.4) after 150 days of culture on the medium. In total, 65 amplified bands were revealed by seven SCoT primers (SCoT4, SCoT6, SCoT9, SCoT10, SCoT34, SCoT35 and SCoT36), of which 38 (58.46%) were polymorphic with the percentage ranging from 22.22% to 85.75%, thereby convincingly demonstrated the hybridity. Out of 8 pairs of SSR primers used, 3 primers (C106, MOK26 and C268) showed complementary banding patterns. This paper examines the consequence of affirmative action for a "middle" ranked group on equity and the leader's overall performance or "efficiency." The literature on electoral quotas is invested in the equity question for disadvantaged groups, but is mostly silent on this issue. We use a randomized electoral quota for an intermediately ranked caste group (OBCs) in a large state in India to show that overall, such a quota does not affect delivery of public projects, or redistribute projects away from disadvantaged groups (SC/STs). Moreover, we show that when the group is large, the quota may in fact improve leader's performance. The improvement in overall performance does not come at a cost of lower allocation to the most disadvantaged group. We argue and provide suggestive evidence that when the group is large, such a quota for the group increases within-group electoral competition in villages. The result highlights that "efficiency" concerns regarding affirmative action may need reevaluation. It further justifies the targeting of electoral quota policy in India towards jurisdictions where the group is numerous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mortality statistics are fundamental to understand the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to limitation of real-time data availability, researchers had used mathematical models to estimate excess mortality globally during COVID-19 pandemic. As they demonstrated variations in scope, assumptions, estimations, and magnitude of the pandemic, and hence raised a controversy all over the world. This paper aims to review the mathematical models and their estimates of mortality due to COVID-19 in the Indian context. The PRISMA and SWiM guidelines were followed to the best possible extent. A twostep search strategy was used to identify studies that estimated excess deaths from January 2020 to December 2021 on Medline, Google Scholar, MedRxiv and BioRxiv available until 0100 h, 16 May 2022 (IST).We selected 13 studies based on a predefined criteria and extracted data on a standardised, pre-piloted form by two investigators, independently. Any discordance was resolved through consensus with a senior investigator. Estimated excess mortality was analysed using statistical software and depicted using appropriate graphs. Significant variations in scope, population, data sources, time period, and modelling strategies existed across studies along with a high risk of bias. Most of the models were based on Poisson regression. Predicted excess mortality by various models ranged from 1.1 to 9.5 million. The review presents a summary of all the estimates of excess deaths and is important to understand the different strategies used for estimation, and it highlights the importance of data availability, assumptions, and estimates. This paper presents a techno-functional analysis of two perforated bone artifacts recovered from Indor Khera and Rohana Khurd, North India, dated to c. 6th-2nd century BCE and 4th century BCE, respectively. These artifacts are made from bone walls of the unknown limb of medium/large-size mammals. Based on their morphology and parallels from archaeological sites of India, they have been identified as pendants and daggers. However, a close microscopic analysis of these artifacts tells a different story. The use-wears generated by threads around perforations contraindicate suspending (string-up) assumption. An experimental program has tested this by employing replicas of these artifacts as suspenders and fasteners. The result of this experiment and their comparison with archaeological ones suggest that these artifacts were probably used as fasteners rather than suspenders, thus challenging the conventional hypothesis that they were used as pendants. Over the last two decades, there has been a significant interest in developing solutions to improve the efficiency of power systems, such as optimal energy consumption and management. The demand response programs (DRP) have long been one of the most effective strategies to encourage consumers to change their consumption behavior. In this paper, a novel hybrid DRP has been implemented by combining the time of use (TOU) and incentive-based (IB) DRP methods. To meet the load demand, a PV-WT-BESS hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) has been proposed in this work. Further, to analyze the impact of hybrid DRP on the capacity allocation of different system components, optimal sizing has been performed in two scenarios, one with the actual load and the second with the load after considering the hybrid DRP. The optimization has been carried out by using an improved search space reduction (ISSR) algorithm. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the ISSR algorithm, the obtained results are compared with other algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), grey wolf optimization (GWO), teaching-learning based algorithm (TLBO), seagull optimization algorithm (SOA), and sine cosine algorithm (SCA). Finally, a novel energy management strategy (EMS) is also proposed in this work on the supply side of the HRES, which intelligently uses the variations in the grid tariff to charge the BESS when the tariff is low. To demonstrate the proposed DRP and EMS-based sizing, a case study has been performed for a grid-connected PV-WT-BESS for the location of Kanyakumari, India. From the results obtained, it has been concluded that the hybrid DRP reduces the peak demand up to 5%, which reduces the levelized cost of energy (LCE) by 22%. Furthermore, the proposed novel EMS reduces the LCE further by 5%. This paper studies the effectiveness of the bus priority lane (BPL) for public transport buses in the city of Bengaluru in India. We use the travel times on the BPL corridor as a measure of the effectiveness of the BPL. We find that there is a significant improvement in the travel times after the introduction of the BPL; for the worst 10% of the travel times, we find an improvement between 4% and 28%. Our methodology involves extracting trips on the BPL and computing the travel times for these trips from a time series of GPS information. Our methodology is scalable and can be used to compute the travel times between any two given points in other similar studies. We supplement our results with a novel test (called the D-test) for comparing the levels of stressful driving in the following scenarios: (a) morning peak hours (IST 07:00 h to 11:00 h) versus evening peak hours (IST 17:00 h to 21:00 h), and (b) northward trips versus southward trips on the BPL. We are able to infer that the drivers are generally more stressed during the morning peak hours and during the southward trips on the BPL. Partitioning the BPL into segments, we show that a majority of the segments exhibit similar effectiveness and driver stress trends as the full BPL stretch. We anticipate that corrective measures for the betterment of travel times and driver stress levels (e.g., introducing additional buses subject to vehicle re-balancing constraints, carefully planning the bus schedules to regulate bus traffic throughout the day, etc.) in some segments can lead to further improvements in travel times and reduction in driver stress levels. • Implementation of the Bus Priority Lane can reduce travel times. • Segmented analysis helps identify traffic bottlenecks for targeted intervention. • Driver-stress hot-spots can be identified for targeted intervention. • A novel statistical test compares driving stress levels across a pair of routes. Data is already recognized as an essential piece for unlocking maximum value within a transportation system and it has the potential to create more efficient passenger mobility. The aim of this research is to critically assess the ecosystem for mobility data including policies and regulations in India to administer the pandemic and post-pandemic scenario. The paper identified various data sources based on a typical public transport journey, further summarizing strategies adopted world-wide during COVID-19. The application of data during and post pandemic scenario is discussed to identify that contact tracing and development of digital payment systems as most necessary for same.
