The aim of the present study is to reconcile previous findings (a) that testing mode has no effect on test outcomes or cognitive load (Comput Hum Behav 77:1–10, 2017) and (b) that younger learners' working memory processes are more sensitive to computer-based test formats (J Psychoeduc Assess 37(3):382–394, 2019). We addressed key methodological limitations in past cognitive load research by employing a repeated measures design with 263, year 9 (aged 13–14) science students in Western Australia. Question difficulty (intrinsic cognitive load) and test mode (extraneous cognitive load) were manipulated to measure changes in test performance, cognitive load and scratch paper use on equivalent paper and computer-based versions of an Ohm's Law revision quiz. Hierarchical linear modelling indicated significantly higher paper-based test performance on difficult questions in addition to greater cognitive load and scratch paper use for all paper questions. Testing mode effects on test score, as well as both measures of cognitive load, were not significant when controlling for working memory capacity, although the testing mode*question difficulty interaction remained significant. Together, these results contradict previous findings that computer-based testing can be implemented without consequence for all learners. With the increased use of computer-based testing in national and international-level assessments, these findings warrant further research into the effect of different testing modes on school-aged students. This paper is an attempt to bridge the gap between deep learning and grammatical inference. Indeed, it provides an algorithm to extract a (stochastic) formal language from any recurrent neural network trained for language modelling. In detail, the algorithm uses the already trained network as an oracle—and thus does not require the access to the inner representation of the black-box—and applies a spectral approach to infer a weighted automaton. As weighted automata compute linear functions, they are computationally more efficient than neural networks and thus the nature of the approach is the one of knowledge distillation. We detail experiments on 62 data sets (both synthetic and from real-world applications) that allow an in-depth study of the abilities of the proposed algorithm. The results show the WA we extract are good approximations of the RNN, validating the approach. Moreover, we show how the process provides interesting insights toward the behavior of RNN learned on data, enlarging the scope of this work to the one of explainability of deep learning models. This paper describes the on-going research at Cliff Head, Garden Island (Indigenous name Meeandip) in Western Australia, the first British settlement on the west coast of Australia dating to 1829. The research has recorded features of local limestone and introduced materials such as low-fired brick, a well, and other artifacts brought from Britain. Early results suggest that areas at the camp existed for domestic purposes, storage of equipment and food supplies, the running of stock, and intra and inter-island communication, but other hypotheses are proposed. In this paper, 100 years of uninterrupted rainfall data for 12 rainfall stations (four rainfall stations from each region) in Western Australia were analyzed against respective dominant climate indices, and representative prediction models were developed using ARIMAX, GEP, and a hybrid technique (GEP-ARIMAX). Statistical performance evaluators such as Pearson correlation (r) , root mean square error (R M S E) , mean absolute error ( MAE ), and refined Willmot index of agreement ( d r ) were used to evaluate the prediction performance of the developed models. These models demonstrated their capability to predict up to four months in advance with Pearson correlation (r) values ranging from 0.53 to 0.83, 0.75 to 0.85, and 0.87 to 0.95 for ARIMAX, GEP, and hybrid (GEP-ARIMAX) models respectively. While compared, the hybrid (GEP-ARIMAX) model showed superior prediction performance in both calibration and validation periods with Pearson correlation (r) and refined Willmot index of agreement ( d r ) values were as high as 0.96 and 0.84 respectively. This research evaluates the potentials of argillite quarry waste (AQW) as raw material in ceramics and other industrial applications based on traditional firing techniques. In this context, the AQW samples were first characterized by mineralogical (X-ray diffraction, XRD), chemical (X-ray fluorescence) and physical (grain size distribution and Atterberg limits) analysis. From the results, AQWs composed predominately of clayey-silt with medium to high plasticity. The XRD revealed predominance of clay minerals (illite-chlorite-vermiculite) with high contents of quartz and variable percentages of carbonate and feldspar. The oxides were dominated by SiO2 and Al2O3, low contents of ferromagnesian elements with considerable amounts of alkali and alkali earth elements. The CaO concentrations are high and relate to carbonate contents. The feldspar contents and proportions of alkali and alkali earth elements revealed their potential as stating materials for earthenware production. Empirical assessments using compositional ternary and Winkler diagrams revealed their acceptable level in ceramic applications. To evaluate firing behaviors, the AQW samples were prepared and fired in the range of 800 to 1000°C and technological properties (linear shrinkage LS, weight loss WL, water absorption WA, bulk density and flexural strength FS) were determined. Statistical approach was employed with focus on accuracy and reliability of the data. At 800°C and above, results revealed an increase in LS, WL and FS with decrease in WA. The levels of performance of technological properties of the AQW are considered marginal except with SiO2 contents reduction by 5–10% and with the addition of degreasers. The AQW met the most requirements for grade I, II and III ceramic raw material and other industrial applications such as filler for paper, rubber, plastic and paint industries as described in Indian standard specification. Low power cache memory in a system on chip is in high demand today. With the lowering of MOSFET's channel length, low-power SRAM design has become a more challenging task. This paper presents differential 8T SRAM cell with minimum power utilization. The proposed cell has one pair of transmission gate as access switches. Due to use of TG instead of pass gate access transistor its write access time (TWA) is short. The low power consumption of the cell is due to stacking effect. This paper compares design metrics of the proposed cell with conventional 6T (CON6T) and ZIGZAG 8T (ZG8T) SRAM cells. The proposed 8T SRAM cell shows 1.15×/1.17× improvement in TWA as compared to CON6T/ZG8T at a penalty of 2.65×/2× in read access time (TRA). The proposed cell consumes 3.22× less hold power compared to both CON6T and ZG8T SRAM cells. And the proposed cell consumes 4.41× (4.44×) less write power as compared to CON6T (ZG8T) SRAM cell. Our proposed cell takes 1.37× lower chip area as compared to ZG8T cell at the expense of 1.49× higher area as compared to CON6T SRAM cell. The proposed cell also achieves 1.5×/3× higher stability during write operation as compared to CON6T/ZG8T SRAM cell, respectively. A CNFET-based nonvolatile 4CNFET2M resistive RAM (ReRAM) cell is proposed in this paper. In this design, four CNFETs are employed as high-speed, low power and high endurance switches while the two memristors constitute the memory element. In this paper, the proposed 4CNFET2M ReRAM has been compared with the standard 6T SRAM (S6T) cell and the contemporary 2T2M ReRAM cell. The proposed cell shows 1.68 ×/2.14 × shorter read delay (TRA) when compared to S6T/2T2M while exhibiting 4.16 × shorter write delay (TWA) than that of 2T2M @ VDD = 1 V. Moreover, at VDD = 1 V, it displays a 2.32 × narrower spread in TWA than 2T2M as well as 8.0 ×/7.25 × narrower spread in TRA than that of S6T/2T2M. The proposed cell consumes 2.57 × 106 ×/2.70 × lower hold power (HPWR) than that of S6T/2T2M at VDD = 1 V. In addition, it exhibits tolerance to variations in temperature as well as pitch and Vth of memristor. All this is achieved at a 32.44 × penalty in TWA when compared to S6T. The use of CNFET devices, which possess far superior electrical characteristics in comparison to traditional CMOS devices, integrated with memristor technology, paves the way for such major improvements in design metrics of the proposed cell. This paper describes a maintenance scheduling model for digester banks. Digester banks are network-connected assets that lie on the critical path of the Bayer process, a chemical refinement process that converts bauxite ore into alumina. The banks require different maintenance activities at different due times. Furthermore, the maintenance schedule is subject to production-related constraints and resource limitations. Given the complexity of scheduling maintenance for large fleets of digester banks, a continuous-time, mixed-integer linear program is formulated to find the cost-minimising maintenance schedule that satisfies all required constraints. A solution approach that employs lazy constraints and Benders decomposition is proposed to solve the model. Unlike generic implementations of Benders decomposition, we show that the subproblems can be solved explicitly using a specialist algorithm. Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods quantify the impact of life cycle inventory data within each impact category by means of classification and characterization. This paper evaluated whether the selected LCIA method influenced the life cycle assessment (LCA) scenario analysis for decision support in process development and its possible reasons. For this study, a scenario analysis was used from a biorefinery LCA case study, as this is a key practice in process development. The analysis was investigated using various LCIA methods for the three midpoint impact categories of global warming potential (GWP, 12 LCIA methods totaling 48 subcategories), eutrophication potential (EP, 9 LCIA methods totaling 18 subcategories), and water assessment (WA, 10 LCIA methods totaling 26 subcategories). The GWP category showed consistent interpretations for the scenario analysis from different LCIA methods. The subcategory of marine EP from the two LCIA methods disagreed on the best-case scenario. Another discrepancy was identified within the three general EP indicators, where the trend of the scenario analysis was inverted in one method because of the sensitivity of a single substance (ethanol). Within the subcategories of WA, the inclusion or exclusion of hydropower water impacts changed the scenario analysis in the blue water use and total freshwater use subcategories, and the general WA indicators also disagreed on the best-case scenario. This paper provides an overview of the policies of school autonomy in Australian public education from the Karmel report in 1973 to the present day. The key focus is on the social justice implications of this reform. It tracks the tensions between policy moves to both grant schools greater autonomy and rein in this autonomy with the increasing instatement of external forms of regulation. Utilising Nancy Fraser's concepts of dis-embedding and re-embedding markets, we track key policy moments in three Australian states (Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales) along with federal interventions. We draw attention to the redistributive and representative justice implications arising from these policy moments as occurring within a consistent trajectory towards a market agenda and argue that future policy needs to consider the effect of past policy. Factors affecting fertilizer decisions made by grain growers are changing in the context of changing climatic conditions and growing volatility in global fertilizer and grain markets. To ensure sustainable development of grain industries in light of this uncertainty, research, development, extension, and adoption activities associated with growers' fertilizer decisions need to be focused on factors to which they are most sensitive. The aim of this paper is to understand the factors that have the greatest influence on grain producer's fertilizer strategies, how these factors have changed over recent years, and what is the relative importance of agronomic, socioeconomic, and logistical factors affecting these strategies. A telephone survey of 425 grain-growing businesses in Western Australia was conducted, and survey results were analyzed statistically. We show for the first time that grain growers' fertilizer decisions are most sensitive to agronomic factors (especially the amount and distribution of rainfall). Logistic factors (such as difficulties fertilizing increasing areas in short periods of time) are growing in influence as farm size, cropping areas, and the number of fertilizer applications within seasons increase. Fertilizer decisions have become less sensitive to socioeconomic factors over the last 10 to 15 years. To ensure sustainable development of grain production, research through to adoption activities should focus on agronomic issues (such as seasonal forecasting) and logistic issues (such as improving planning, organizational, and technical capacity for developing and implementing fertilizer strategies). This paper demonstrates knowledge-guided fuzzy logic modeling of regional-scale surficial uranium (U) prospectivity in British Columbia (Canada). The deposits/occurrences of surficial U in this region vary from those in Western Australia and Namibia; thus, requiring innovative and carefully-thought techniques of spatial evidence generation and integration. As novelty, this papers introduces a new weighted fuzzy algebraic sum operator to combine certain spatial evidence layers. The analysis trialed several layers of spatial evidence based on conceptual mineral system model of surficial U in British Columbia (Canada) as well as tested various models of evidence integration. Non-linear weighted functions of (a) spatial closeness to U-enriched felsic igneous rocks was employed as U-source spatial evidence, (b) spatial closeness to paleochannels as fluid pathways spatial evidence, and (c) surface water U content as chemical trap spatial evidence. The best models of prospectivity created by integrating the layers of spatial evidence for U-source, pathways and traps predicted at least 85% of the known surficial U deposits/occurrences in >10% of the study region with the highest prospectivity fuzzy scores. The results of analyses demonstrate that, employing the known deposits/occurrences of surficial U for scrutinizing the spatial evidence layers and the final models of prospectivity can pinpoint the most suitable critical processes and models of data integration to reduce bias in the analysis of mineral prospectivity. To enhance the accessibility and acceptability of evidence-based parenting programs in Indigenous communities, there is a need to build a confident and skilled workforce within these diverse settings. For training to be effective, the complex histories, traditional values and practices of the communities in which a program will be delivered must be appreciated. In this paper, we investigate the efficacy of a community-adapted, professional training program to deliver the evidence-based Indigenous Triple P - Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) in remote Aboriginal communities in the Fitzroy Valley, Western Australia. Extensive consultation with community leaders, a project advisory group, and local Aboriginal organizations and service providers guided modifications to the program. Repeated measures analyses were used to assess parent coach (N = 38) knowledge and confidence prior to and immediately post training and at an accreditation workshop two months following training. Parent coaches who completed the tailored Triple P practitioner training reported high rates of satisfaction with the training, a significant increase in capacity to deliver parenting support, significantly increased confidence in their parent consultation skills, and significantly increased perceived empowerment within communities, the workplace and home. These results were maintained at two months post-training. Qualitative results indicate that training was well received and beneficial. Post-training support by an experienced Triple P practitioner residing in the community for an extended period was critical to supporting program implementation and sustainability. Program co-designed and implemented with community input, led to a high rate of accreditation in a cohort of local workers. Pavement engineering has always relied on asphalt concrete as the primary material. As a result, increasing the quality of asphalt concrete for greater performance and longer durability has remained a focus of research. The present paper aims to assess the potential of soft computing-based models, such as Artificial neural networks, Support vector machines, Gaussian process, M5P tree, Random forest, and Random tree-based models, used for the prediction of Marshall Stability of carbon–fiber asphalt mix. Five different statistical indices are used to evaluate the performance of each model with different input variables, such as Bitumen content (BC), Carbon fiber (CF), Bitumen grade (VG), Fiber length (FL), and Fiber diameter (FD), Specific gravity coarse aggregate (SG(CA)), Water absorption coarse aggregate (WA(CA)) and Specific Gravity of bitumen (SG(B)), to get the Marshall Stability (MS) as an output. Five statistical indices were used to assess the effectiveness of the applied models i.e., Coefficient of correlation (CC), Mean absolute error (MAE), Root mean square error (RMSE), Relative absolute error (RAE) and Root relative squared error (RRSE). According to performance evaluation results, it has been found that the ANN-based model has outperformed all the applied models for predicting the Marshall Stability of asphalt concrete using carbon fiber with CC value as 0.9287 and 0.9126, R2 value as 0.8624 and 0.8328, MAE value as 1.7527 and 1.8702, RMSE value as 2.3305 and 2.4438, RAE value as 32.51 and 39.64% and RRSE values as 37.30 and 43.59% for both the training and testing stages respectively. Taylor's diagram suggests that the ANN model outperforms the other applied models. Sensitivity analysis shows that the bitumen content (BC) is the more sensitive parameter in the carbon–fiber asphalt mix. Furthermore, carbon fiber is comparable to the sensitivity of the bitumen content which shows the significance of the carbon fiber in the asphalt mix in predicting the Marshall Stability. The revolution in technology is so fast that even silicon devices are not able to meet the current demand of high speed, low power, and minimal area. The CMOS SRAM cells are the ones, affected the most by the revolutionary scaling of the devices. Due to various limitations of CMOS in deep sub-micron, new devices have emerged. One such device is the transition metal dichalcogenide field-effect transistor (TMDFET) to have prominent properties. This paper presents a novel read decoupled feedback-cutting 9T (RDFC9T) SRAM cell with high static noise margins (SNMs). The 16 nm CMOS and TMDFET devices are being used to design and compare the proposed design, showing the superiority of the TMDFET-based design. Furthermore, to evaluate the comparative performance of the proposed RDFC9T SRAM cell, it has been compared with the published SRAM cells introduced as 6T, 10T-P1, HFSE9T, and SB11T redesigned by 10 nm TMDFET device at VDD=0.7 V. The suggested cell exhibits 3.20X and 1.71X/1.15X/5.26X higher read SNM and write SNM as compared to the 6T and 6T/HFSE9T/10T-P1 SRAM cells, respectively. The cell exhibits 1.11X/2.10X and 1.06X/1.30X smaller read delay (TRA) and write delay (TWA) than that of the HFSE9T/SB11T SRAM design, correspondingly. In terms of power performance, the RDFC9T cell shows 0.86X/0.68X and 0.56X/0.37X/0.35X less read power and write power than the SB11T/6T and SB11T/10T-P1/6T cell, respectively. Moreover, the proposed design shows robustness against harsh process variations and mitigates the half-select issues to support bit-interleaving architecture. This paper describes the archaeology of one family's tolerance to the stressors associated with the settlement of a new place. Artifacts associated with the maintenance of clothing suggest that a British family newly arrived at the Swan River colony in the southwest of Australia had the ability to remain composed during a period of reduced resources and psychological strain. The family's ability to resist stress was probably the result of the social knowledge gained during previous experiences with internal migration in the British Isles during a time of high social dislocation. Co-production across scientific and Indigenous knowledge systems has become a cornerstone of research to enhance knowledge, practice, ethics, and foster sustainability transformations. However, the profound differences in world views and the complex and contested histories of nation-state colonisation on Indigenous territories, highlight both opportunities and risks for Indigenous people when engaging with knowledge co-production. This paper investigates the conditions under which knowledge co-production can lead to improved Indigenous adaptive environmental planning and management among remote land-attached Indigenous peoples through a case study with ten Traditional Owner groups in the Martuwarra (Fitzroy River) Catchment in Western Australia's Kimberley region. The research team built a 3D map of the river and used it, together with an interactive table-top projector, to bring together both scientific and Indigenous spatial knowledge. Participatory influence mapping, aligned with Traditional Owner priorities to achieve cultural governance and management planning goals set out in the Fitzroy River Declaration, investigated power relations. An analytical framework, examining underlying mechanisms of social learning, knowledge promotion and enhancing influence, based on different theories of change, was applied to unpack the immediate outcomes from these activities. The analysis identified that knowledge co-production activities improved the accessibility of the knowledge, the experiences of the knowledge users, strengthened collective identity and partnerships, and strengthened Indigenous-led institutions. The focus on cultural governance and management planning goals in the Fitzroy River Declaration enabled the activities to directly affect key drivers of Indigenous adaptive environmental planning and management—the Indigenous-led institutions. The nation-state arrangements also gave some support to local learning and decision-making through a key Indigenous institution, Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council. Knowledge co-production with remote land-attached Indigenous peoples can improve adaptive environmental planning and management where it fosters learning together, is grounded in the Indigenous-led institutions and addresses their priorities. Objective: To address the gap in the literature and using a novel open-source intelligence web-scraping approach, this paper investigates the longitudinal relationships between availability, value, and disposability, and stealing counts of specific makes and models of gaming consoles. Methods: Using data from Western Australia (2012–2019) and focusing on specific makes/models of gaming consoles, the relationships between product-specific stealing counts, availability, value, and disposability were examined using time series and cross-sectional analyses. Results: Support was found for a positive relationship between the changing disposability of specific makes/models of gaming consoles over their lifecycle with corresponding stealing counts, above and beyond changes in availability and value. However, when these attributes were analysed statically, both disposability and value were important. Conclusions: The results highlight the importance of measuring correlates of 'hot products' longitudinally to better understand offenders' target selection preferences over time—with important implications for theft risk assessment and crime prevention policy and practice. These findings also provide support for the use of similar open-source intelligence web-scraping strategies as a suitable technique for capturing time-specific proxies for product-specific value and disposability. Implicit methods for modeling geological structures such as stratigraphy and faults have been developed for more than a decade, and they have made automatic model construction feasible. The implicit potential field method is such a method that is capable of incorporating multiple types of data including contact points for geological boundaries and their measured orientations. The implicit potential field method relies on the solution of a co-kriging system. However, applying the method to 3D modeling of large-scale geological structures constrained to dense data and strict geological rules remains challenging. Due to the non-stationary and complex nature of large-scale geological structures, and difficulty in estimating an adequate variogram model, performing global interpolation with all dense data together may create geologically unrealistic artifacts. We propose a framework that uses a divide-and-conquer strategy. The core idea is to create intermediate 3D geological models that match subsets of data and then recombine them into a single large 3D geological model, while maintaining data and geological rule constraints. We also prove that linear combinations of potential fields preserve properties of conditioning. The paper presents an application of the framework in modeling the stratigraphy model of a large banded iron formation in Western Australia with dense boreholes, but scarce orientation measurements. Some methods for analysing mineral prospectivity, especially the weights of evidence technique, require the predictor variables to be binary values. When the original evidence data are numerical values, such as geochemical indices, they can be converted to binary values by thresholding. When the evidence layer is a spatial feature such as a geological fault system, it can be converted to a binary predictor by buffering at a suitable cut-off distance. This paper reviews methods for selecting the best threshold or cut-off value and compares their performance. The review covers techniques which are well known in prospectivity analysis as well as unfamiliar techniques borrowed from other literature. Methods include maximisation of the estimated contrast, Studentised contrast, χ 2 test statistic, Youden criterion, statistical likelihood, Akman–Raftery criterion, and curvature of the capture–efficiency curve. We identify connections between the different methods, and we highlight a common technical error in their application. Simulation experiments indicate that the Youden criterion has the best performance for selection of the threshold or cut-off value, assuming that a simple binary threshold relationship truly holds. If the relationship between predictor and prospectivity is more complicated, then the likelihood method is the most easily adaptable. The weights-of-evidence contrast performs poorly overall. These conclusions are supported by our analysis of data from the Murchison goldfields, Western Australia. This paper discusses educational insights drawn from a mixed-methods study in Religious Education (RE). The study involved 238 teachers and school leaders, working in 65 Catholic schools in Western Australia (WA). The focus of the study was the educators' perceptions of a large-scale, standardised assessment (LSA) called The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA). The assessment is developed by the Catholic Education Office in WA for the purpose of measuring student learning in RE. Students enrolled in Years Three, Five and Nine in Catholic schools across WA participate in the assessment each year in August. The study revealed six themes, two of which are specific to the educators' perceptions of the administration of the BRLA. The other four themes relate to the perceived nature and role of RE and the use of LSAs in education. The themes signal complexity, based on diverse experiences about teaching and assessment practices in RE. These experiences provide empirical evidence specific to the context of RE as an academic learning area, reserved for the classroom. The evidence is new knowledge that builds on research in RE, identifying existing complexity and challenging, presuppositions and motivations that appear to cause misalignment between policy expectations and school-based practices. Given national interest in education about progressing student learning and the Catholic education agenda about addressing the quality of RE, the new knowledge acts as a springboard for classroom, school and system level dialogue about teaching and assessment practices in RE that can promote progress in student learning in Catholic schools. To make a reliable reconstruction of past climate from soil-surface modern pollen, it is necessary to reduce the sources of error. In this paper, pollen percentages of the sub-continental scale modern pollen-climate dataset from China and Mongolia (with 68% soil-surface samples) are homogenized at various spatial scales. A tailored calibration-set is then applied to lake sediment-surface pollen assemblages from north-central China to evaluate their predictive power. Results indicate that spatial homogenization of modern pollen percentages can increase the proportion of inertia explained by climatic variables in CCA and improve the model performance of leave-one-out cross-validation using WA-PLS. Soil-surface pollen assemblages can thus be employed into a calibration-set for reliable climate estimation and they perform better when the calibration-set has been locally homogenized. Small-scale (e.g., radii 2, 5, or 10 km) homogenization reduces the local noise in soil-surface pollen assemblages and improves the cross-validated performance, while broader scale homogenization (more than 20 km radius) blurs the pollen-climate relationship. Lake sediment-surface pollen assemblages from close to the shore could contain pollen grains transported by rivers or from the shore vegetation and thus fail to represent regional climate well like the assemblages from the central part and deep-water area of lake. The importance of recognising, valuing and respecting a child's family, culture, language and values is increasingly articulated in educational policy. Diversity and inclusion are central themes of the guiding principles of early childhood education and care in Australia. Children's literature can be a powerful tool for extending children's knowledge and understandings of themselves and others who may be different culturally, socially or historically. However, evidence suggests many settings provide monocultural book collections which are counterproductive to principles of diversity. This paper reports on a larger study investigating factors and relationships influencing the use of children's literature to support principles of cultural diversity in the kindergarten rooms of long day care centres. The study was conducted within an ontological perspective of constructivism and an epistemological perspective of interpretivism informed by sociocultural theory. A mixed methods approach was adopted and convergent design was employed to interpret significant relationships and their meanings. Twenty-four educators and 110 children from four long day care centres in Western Australia participated. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, video-based observations, field notes, document analysis and a book audit. This study identified that current book collections in these four kindergarten rooms of long day care centres promote monocultural viewpoints and 'othering' of minority groups through limited access to books portraying inclusive and authentic cultural diversity. These findings have important social justice implications. This paper reports on the results of a 3-year study conducted at the Centre for Schooling and Learning Technologies (CSaLT) at Edith Cowan University in collaboration with the Curriculum Council of Western Australia which concerns the potential to use digital technologies to represent the output from assessment tasks in the senior secondary course, Engineering Studies. The general aim of this study is to explore the potential of various digitally-based forms for external assessment for senior secondary courses in terms of manageability, cost, validity and reliability. The problem being addressed was the need to provide students with assessment opportunities in new courses, that are on one hand authentic, where many outcomes do not lend themselves to being assessed using pen and paper over a three hour period, while on the other hand being able to be reliably and manageably assessed by external examiners. That is, the external assessment for a course needs to accurately and reliably assess the outcomes without a huge increase in the cost of assessment. A computer managed examination was designed that consisted of a design task that was broken down into a number of timed activities. Students were paced through each activity, recording their input in the form of a portfolio. Input consisted of text, graphics through a camera, video and voice. The exam outputs were uploaded to a online repository. Research on teacher formation emphasises the need for teachers in Catholic schools to be involved in ongoing, purposeful, professional and spiritual formation (Franchi and Rymarz 2017). Contextually, Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) requires teachers of Religious Education (RE) in Catholic schools to participate in ongoing professional development, including opportunities for spiritual and faith formation. This paper presents initial findings from a project that engaged twelve Catholic early childhood RE teachers from one Western Australian school in a series of formative sessions. The project was named The T.I.T.U.S. (Testament In Teachers Using Scripture) Project and comprised four sessions that offered teachers opportunities for spiritual and faith formation through the use of Scripture. A qualitative approach to the research design was employed and data gathered included survey, journaling and semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed through a process of thematic coding. Background Australian government funding for Residential Medication Management Reviews and Home Medicines Reviews commenced in 1997 and 2001 respectively. Limited data are available on their provision in Australia. Objective To investigate the extent and characteristics of Home Medicines Review and Residential Medication Management Review services provided by accredited pharmacists practising in Western Australia. Setting Pharmacists in Western Australia accredited by the Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacy or Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia. Method A paper questionnaire was developed and sent to 198 accredited pharmacists in Western Australia in June 2017. Simple descriptive statistics summarised demographic information and other responses. Logistic regression evaluated factors associated with the frequency of provision of Home Medicines Reviews. Main outcome measure Frequency and factors influencing services provided. Results Of 102 (51.5%) questionnaires returned, 67 (65.7%) respondents were female. Many were aged between 31 and 40 years (53; 52.0%). Most were accredited by the Australian Association of Consultant Pharmacy (101; 99.0%) and mainly offered Home Medicines Reviews (70; 68.6%). Home Medicines Reviews provided over the previous 12 months were limited in frequency with one quarter providing either 1-10 (27; 26.5%) or 21-50 (28; 27.5%) reviews. The median "average" preparation, interview and report writing times, plus communication with other health professionals aggregated to 175.0 min (interquartile range: 140.0-235.0 min) for Home Medicine Reviews and 110.0 min (90.0-140.0) for Residential Medication Management Reviews. Pharmacists born overseas and those who were accredited for a longer time were associated with performing 51 or more Home Medicines Reviews annually. Only one-third (36/101; 35.6%) agreed the current payment was appropriate. Most agreed their Home Medicines Reviews (92/96; 95.8%) and Residential Medication Management Reviews (26/28; 92.9%) provided improved patient outcomes. Over 97% of accredited pharmacists intended to continue to remain accredited. Conclusions Wide variations were evident in the times taken for tasks associated with performing reviews. Most respondents considered their medication reviews contributed to improved patient outcomes. The wide variation in times taken for the reviews suggests a tiered structure for service provision, with appropriate payment within each tier, since most consider current remuneration inadequate. This paper presents the comparison of the performances between the linear and non-linear modelling techniques in re-generating the patterns of long-term seasonal rainfall in Western Australia. To construct the linear and non-linear models, commonly adopted multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modelling approaches were applied. Lagged (past) values of the oceanic climate drivers, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) were considered to be the prospective forecasters of seasonal rainfall. The MLR models which were statistically significant and not susceptible to multicollinearity problems were considered as the potential models. The Lavenberg–Marquardt algorithm with Multilayer Perceptron training rule was adopted to construct the non-linear ANN models. The capability of both the MLR and ANN models were evaluated through commonly used statistical parameters. Since rainfall vary not only temporally but also spatially, the analysis were performed on regional scale. The methods were applied to three Western Australian rainfall stations. As expected, in estimating Western Australian spring rainfalls, non-linear ANN models performed much better compared to MLR models in regards to Pearson correlation as well as statistical errors. This paper presents a successful application of the Budyko approach to assess the streamflow changes in the Harvey Catchment, Western Australia, due to climate variation and human activities. For cross-validation, results from the Budyko approach were compared with the HBV hydrology model. A hybrid estimation-optimisation algorithm (ANN-PSO) was used to automatically calibrate the HBV model to increase the accuracy by preventing human errors and to reduce the time-consuming process associated with the calibration. Results from the both approaches indicate climate change is the dominant factor in streamflow reduction in the Harvey Catchment with 55% attribution. Additionally, the Budyko approach was applied to estimate future streamflow changes in the Harvey River. Results show a significant reduction in streamflow (i.e., 38–58%) by 2100. The use of the Budyko approach to reliably ascribe the impacts of climate change and human activities to variation in streamflow was upheld. The Budyko approach, which uses limited hydrological data, can also be adopted as an alternative to hydrological modelling in predicting future streamflow changes, especially in ungauged catchments and catchments with limited hydrological information. Secondary salinisation is recognised worldwide as a threat to aquatic biodiversity. Wetlands in the Wheatbelt Region of Western Australia are particularly affected as a result of clearing of deep-rooted native vegetation for agriculture. Between 1996 and 2001, the Western Australian government nominated six natural diversity recovery catchments (NDRCs), being catchments with high value and diverse wetlands in need of protection. One, the Buntine-Marchagee NDRC, supports approximately 1000 wetlands in varying states of salinisation. The challenge is to prioritise these wetlands for ongoing management. In this paper we propose an approach to prioritise representative wetlands using aquatic invertebrates. On the basis of hydrology, salinity and remnant vegetation, 20 wetlands covering a range of salinities were selected for sampling of water quality and aquatic invertebrates. Of the 202 taxa recorded, most endemic taxa occurred in fresh/brackish wetlands, while hypersaline wetlands supported predominantly cosmopolitan species. Taxa richness was greater in fresh/brackish than saline and hypersaline wetlands, with conductivity explaining 83 % of between-wetland variation in taxa richness. Classification using invertebrate assemblages separated fresh/brackish, saline and hypersaline wetlands, with greatest between-year variability within saline and hypersaline sites. Wetlands were ranked using taxa diversity, presence of conservation-significant taxa and temporal similarity. Mean rank across indices provided the final overall order of priority. Hypersaline wetlands were ordered separately to the fresher water wetlands (fresh/brackish and saline) so that priority for future management was detailed for both types of wetlands. The analysis indicated that although fresh/brackish sites support the highest biodiversity, naturally saline sites also supported wetland assemblages worthy of ongoing protection. This is a study of ethical and moral behavior, or perhaps unethical behavior, in two different societies. One society, contemporary Australia and in particular the state of Western Australia, is currently undergoing an exhaustive Royal Commission into the shenanigans of a number of well-known business men and former leading politicians who seem to have been playing fast and loose with large amounts of other peoples' money. While this was initially the major focus of the paper, a secondary focus developed based on the interest shown in acquiring an historical background by a group of business policy students. The opportunity to acquire an appreciation of historical events and in particular, the development of a sense of history seems to be lacking in the curricula of modern day business students. The secondary focus of the paper therefore illustrated that malfeasance, misfeasance and other forms of malpractice in business and administration were just as common in Greco-Roman times as today. Anticyclones are one of the main synoptic features of the global midlatitudes, where they are associated with dry, settled conditions. Previous studies have identified southern Australia as a region where significant long-term changes have occurred in recent decades, including a decline in cool season rainfall and an increase in the frequency of anticyclones. This paper uses several reanalyses to assess the climatology, variability, trends and impacts of anticyclones in southern Australia and several subregions. A robust increase in the frequency of anticyclones in southern Australia is demonstrated between 1960–1979 and 1997–2014, particularly in southeast Australia and the Tasman Sea during the cool months of the year. At least 30% of the recent cool season rainfall decline in southeast Australia can be associated with an increased frequency of anticyclones in this region. However, there are no clear trends in anticyclone frequency near southwestern Western Australia, where long-term rainfall declines are due to changes in other weather systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Long-term monthly streamflow forecasting has great importance in the water resource system planning. However, its modelling in extreme cases is difficult, especially in semiarid regions. The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and hybrid wavelet-artificial neural networks (WA-ANNs) for multi-step monthly streamflow forecasting in two different hydro-climatic regions in Northern Algeria. Different issues have been addressed, both those related to the model's structure and those related to wavelet transform. The discrete wavelet transform has been used for the preprocessing of the input variables of the hybrid models, and the multi-step streamflow forecast was carried out by means of a recursive approach. The study demonstrated that WA-ANN models outperform the single ANN models for the two hydro-climatic regions. According to the performance criteria used, the results highlighted the ability of WA-ANN models with lagged streamflows, precipitations and evapotranspirations to forecast up to 19 months for the humid region with good accuracy [Nash–Sutcliffe criterion (Ns) equal 0.63], whereas, for the semiarid region, the introduction of evapotranspirations does not improve the model's accuracy for long lead time (Ns less than 0.6 for all combinations used). The gravity field signal observed on the surface of the earth is the superposition of the gravitational effects produced mainly by the mass sources at different locations and depths from the surface down to the underground. Reliable geophysical interpretation of gravity anomalies is highly dependent on the validity of the data processing methods and the rationality of the calculated results. This paper proposes a novel potential field separation method based on two-dimensional Normal Space-Scale Transform (NSST2D) algorithm to implement the residual-regional field separation. Compared with the two dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT2D) method often appeared in the previous potential field separation studies, the NSST2D algorithm can keep the shape of the separated field from distortion by normalizing the conventional two-dimensional wavelet transform kernels. Based on gravity field of synthetic models, the separated residual-regional fields respectively derived from DWT2D with five different wavelet bases and those from NSST2D are compared. The experimental results verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed NSST2D algorithm. Finally, the NSST2D algorithm is also applied to the separation of the complete Bouguer gravity anomaly in the Kauring airborne gravity test site, Western Australia. The results show that the characteristics of the separated field from the corresponding mass sources with different depths maintain relatively good consistency with the feature of the three-dimensional inversion density contrast distribution. Germination is a high-risk phase in a plant's life cycle and is directly regulated by temperature. Seeds germinate over a range of temperatures within which there is an optimum temperature, with thresholds above and below which no germination occurs. Rapid changes in temperature associated with global warming may cause a disconnect between temperatures a seed experiences and temperatures over which germination can occur. This paper explores the temperature dimension of the germination niche of eight herbaceous species from South West Western Australia as part of a broader assessment of endemic native species at risk of decline under global warming. The data obtained from germination studies on a temperature gradient plate were used to populate models to predict optimum germination responses (mean time to germination, germination timing and success) under current (1950–2000 averages) and future (2070 high greenhouse gas emission) temperature scenarios. The species exhibited a mix of germination responses, often with high tolerance to high diurnal temperatures. A number of species did not reach their full potential within the experimental period, indicating the presence of dormancy not overcome due to temperature alone. Modelling revealed that for some species the opportunity for germination may decline due to rising temperatures, but for others there would be little change, though a shift in germination timing may be expected. This approach to identifying extinction risk contributes tangibly to efforts to predict plant responses to environmental change and can help prioritize species for management actions, direct limited resources towards further investigations and supplement bioclimatic modelling. Purpose: In many streams worldwide including those on the south coast of Western Australia (WA), sediments of the > 2-mm fraction often contribute up to 50% of the streambed. However, most analysis and interpretation of sediment chemistry, including phosphorus (P), is conducted on the < 2-mm fraction as this fraction is considered the most chemically reactive. This paper aims to identify the contribution of the > 2-mm fraction to P retention and release in sandy-gravely streams. Material and methods: Sediment samples were collected from streams in agricultural catchments, and P retention and release by the < 2-mm and > 2-mm (typically lateritic; iron rich) sediment fractions were examined using fluvarium and batch experiments. Phosphorus sorbed by sediment was estimated on a mass (mg P kg−1) and area basis (mg P m−2). Results and discussion: Phosphorus sorption measurements suggested that mineralogy as well as particle size were important factors influencing P retention by stream sediments. Stream sediments retained approximately 30% of added P. In a desorption phase, approximately 8% of the retained P was released into stream water. Conclusions: Stream sediments in south western WA appear to be net immobilisers of P, retaining more P than they release, dependent on the stream P concentration. Exclusion of the > 2-mm fraction when determining stream sediment P dynamics may therefore underestimate whole stream sediment P retention and release. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evaluating cyber security risk is a challenging task regardless of an organisation’s nature of business or size, however, an essential activity. This paper uses the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cyber security framework (CSF) to assess the cyber security posture of a local government organisation in Western Australia. Our approach enabled the quantification of risks for specific NIST CSF core functions and respective categories and allowed making recommendations to address the gaps discovered to attain the desired level of compliance. Grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) was first detected in commercial vineyards in the Swan Valley region of Western Australia (WA) in 1998 and has now spread to all grape-growing regions of the state. This paper uses a bioeconomic model linking weather, spread, infection development, variable production costs and revenue to estimate the costs of P. viticola over time. Results indicate mean annual costs of AUD $7.3 million per year, equivalent to a 1% drop in the gross value of WA grape-growing industries. Objectives Monitoring surveys and research outline a paucity of alcohol consumption data for women in the period of lactation, particularly in rural areas of developed countries. Identifying the drinking profile of ante- and postnatal women in this population will aid in the effective dissemination of public health interventions. This paper will present the first alcohol consumption data of pregnant and breastfeeding women living in rural Western Australia (WA). Methods A prospective cohort of 489 mothers and their infants were recruited between April 2010 and November 2011. All women regardless of their infant feeding method were followed up at 4, 10, 16, 26, 32, 40 and 52 weeks postpartum. Data were analysed to ascertain the prevalence and patterns of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and lactation. Results Approximately 20% of women consumed alcohol during pregnancy, with a predominance of women from older age groups and smokers. At 4, 6 and 12 months postpartum; 45.9%, 47.0% and 51.9% of breastfeeding mothers were consuming alcohol respectively. Conclusions for Practice There remains a considerable proportion of women who continue to drink during pregnancy. Although proven successful, public health campaigns now need to target women who are older and who smoke. Benzene is an occupational and environmental toxicant, causing hematopoietic damage. Our study is aimed to extract the trend of benzene-induced leukemia (BIL) and qualitatively and quantitatively estimate research on it. Publications on BIL were identified from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Microsoft Excel 2019 (Redmond, WA) and The CiteSpace 5.6.R5 software (Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA) were used to analyze the publication outcomes, countries, institutions, authors, keywords, and research frontiers. The overall 1152 publications were collected from 1990 to 2019 until November 6, 2020. Environ Health Persp had the highest number of articles published. The USA were the top country in terms of BIL. The Smith MT, Yin SN, Lan Q, and Hayes RB are both listed in the top 10 of co-cited authors, high contribution authors, and the authors of co-cited references. High IF articles account for a considerable proportion, among all the publications. Chinese institutions engaged in BIL and contributed a large part of articles. Exposure population, exposure dose, and exposure risk are the research hotspots in this field. The risk of benzene exposure on childhood leukemia is at issue, and the studies on attributable risk of benzene-induced leukemia are few. More early, sensitive, and specific epigenetic biomarkers of benzolism may be the leading research fields of benzene-induced leukemia in the next few years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recognition is growing that childhood witnessing of domestic violence is tantamount to child abuse due to the damage the experience may have on the witnessing child's long-term emotional and social wellbeing. This paper helps to lift the cloak of silence that surrounds the child witnessing phenomenon by presenting the recollected adult memories of six female former child witnesses. Utilizing a mixed case-study and consensual qualitative research design, the study's findings reveal that the potential threat to a child witness's immediate and long-term wellbeing can be mediated through the progressive development of a range of adaptive coping strategies. Of these, the strategy of establishing a safe place and a supportive relationship outside of the abusive nuclear family home seems pivotal to the witnessing child's resilient ability to move on and lead a 'rewarding' adult life. This paper invokes the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a diagnostic tool to explain an existing public education program's limited success at improving river water quality in the City of Perth, Western Australia. A reflective, client-driven research approach was used. A facilitated expert workshop defined an environmental problem (excess nutrients leaving gardens and entering waterways) and a desired behavior (residents purchasing environmentally sensitive fertilizer) to address the problem. A TPB-based belief elicitation survey captured respondents' beliefs regarding the desired behavior. The findings suggest respondents were aware of the links between purchasing environmentally sensitive fertilizer and river water quality. However, this behavior is compromised by the challenges in identifying appropriate products, product quality concerns, and cost. Viewing the content of a public education program through the lens of the TPB reveals insights into how and why the program fell short in achieving one of its key behavioral change goals. Water level forecasting using recorded time series can provide a local modelling capability to facilitate local proactive management practices. To this end, hourly sea water level time series are investigated. The records collected at the Hillarys Boat Harbour, Western Australia, are investigated over the period of 2000 and 2002. Two modelling techniques are employed: low-dimensional dynamic model, known as the deterministic chaos theory, and genetic programming, GP. The phase space, which describes the evolution of the behaviour of a nonlinear system in time, was reconstructed using the delay-embedding theorem suggested by Takens. The presence of chaotic signals in the data was identified by the phase space reconstruction and correlation dimension methods, and also the predictability into the future was calculated by the largest Lyapunov exponent to be 437 h or 18 days into the future. The intercomparison of results of the local prediction and GP models shows that for this site-specific dataset, the local prediction model has a slight edge over GP. However, rather than recommending one technique over another, the paper promotes a pluralistic modelling culture, whereby different techniques should be tested to gain a specific insight from each of the models. This paper addresses implementation issues in order to apply non-stationary least-squares collocation (LSC) to a practical geodetic problem: fitting a gravimetric quasigeoid to discrete geometric quasigeoid heights at a local scale. This yields a surface that is useful for direct GPS heighting. Non-stationary covariance functions and a non-stationary model of the mean were applied to residual gravimetric quasigeoid determination by planar LSC in the Perth region of Western Australia. The non-stationary model of the mean did not change the LSC results significantly. This paper presents an uncomplicated approach to improve estimates of groundwater nutrient load to a marine embayment. A two-dimensional chemical profile of shallow groundwater was analysed in a sandy beach in three seasons (early summer, late summer and mid winter) and an adjusted estimate of groundwater nutrient discharge was derived that accounts for a complex biogeochemical environment and non-conservative behaviour of nutrients in the pre-discharge beach groundwater. The study was conducted at Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, where there has been significant groundwater contamination and associated marine ecological degradation. Losses in nitrogen and increases in phosphorus were observed along the discharge pathway beyond that expected from mixing with marine water, and the changes were attributed to chemically and biologically mediated reactions. A slow groundwater velocity (0.14–0.18 m day−1), high organic carbon (TOC = 0.35–4.9 mmol l−1, DOC = 0.28–4.6 mmol l−1) and low to sub-oxic conditions (DO = 0.4–24% saturation) were deemed suitable for chemically and biologically mediated reactions to occur and subsequently alter regional estimates of groundwater nutrient concentration. Accounting for this environment, groundwater loads were calculated that were 1–2 orders of magnitude less than previous regional-based estimates: 0.4–13 kg NO day−1, 0.2–24 kg NH4 + day−1. This paper is the first in a pair investigating potential mechanisms for ecological regime change in salinising wetlands. In this first paper, we investigated some of the factors responsible for the formation and maintenance of a macrophyte-dominated ecological regime by studying the germination and flowering of four submerged macrophyte species common in saline Western Australian wetlands; Ruppia polycarpa R. Mason, Ruppia megacarpa R. Mason, Lamprothamnium macropogon (A. Braun) Ophel and L. cf. succinctum (A. Braun in Ascherson) Wood, and by following the survival of adult R. polycarpa as salinities were increased to a range of endpoints (6, 15, 45, 70 and 100 ppt). Increased salinity led to a decrease in the number of germinating plants, an increase in the time to emergence of germinating plants and a decrease in the number of inflorescences (or fertile plants) produced by R. polycarpa, L. macropogon and L. cf. succinctum. Germination of R. megacarpa was low, providing limited information with regard to salinity response. The survival of adult plants also decreased as salinity increased and was negatively affected by faster rates of salinity increase. The upper salinity limits for germination, within the 70 day experiment, were 40–50 ppt for R. polycarpa and L. cf. succinctum, and 30–40 ppt for L. macropogon. This paper is the second in a pair investigating potential mechanisms for ecological regime change in salinising wetlands. The first paper in this series focused on the responses of the salt-tolerant submerged macrophyte community to salinity. In this second paper, we investigated some of the environmental conditions required for initiation and dominance of benthic microbial communities using a combination of experimental and observational data. Two experiments were carried out. One investigated the importance of prior establishment of benthic microbial communities on their ability to maintain prevalence over macrophyte colonisation (‘persistence’ experiment), while the other investigated hydrology and its effect on sediment perturbation, potential nutrient release and subsequent benthic microbial community establishment (‘flooding’ experiment). The ‘persistence’ experiment measured the biomass of benthic microbial communities and emergence of macrophytes from sediments kept either wet or dry for 4 weeks then flooded at a range of salinities. Benthic microbial biomass was similar across all of the salinities tested (15, 45 and 70 ppt), with a slight increase at higher salinities, suggesting that none of these limited benthic microbial community development. Pre-wetting of sediments usually increased benthic microbial community biomass and reduced macrophyte germination, but the latter was attributed to the presence of anoxic sediments rather than the increased benthic microbial community biomass. Germinating macrophytes emerged through benthic microbial communities or dense heterotrophic bacterial blooms, demonstrating that they could become dominant even when another community was already established. Field data supported these results, suggesting that the development of benthic microbial communities is not limited by salinity alone, but includes other factors, such as the water regime. In the ‘flooding’ experiment, the largest differences in nutrient concentrations ultimately lay between the pre-wet and pre-dry treatments (due to the greater release of nutrients and development of anoxia in the latter) rather than those subjected to fast versus slow flooding. In response to this, highest benthic microbial community biomass was in treatments with pre-wet sediment, corresponding with lower phytoplankton biomass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
