The very possibility of having an omniscient virtual assistant at hand soon seems incredibly tempting, so it seems quite normally to see numerous reports on the application of each newly emerging advanced neural network technology in various fields of medicine and biotechnology. Of course, the emergence of ChatGPT caused the greatest public outcry in recent times, because the new natural language processing algorithm underlying it has allowed human to bring communication between man and machine to a whole new level. Of course, despite the myriad benefits of using AI, the use of ChatGPT and other AI tools in medicine raises many ethical and legal questions. However, it is worth remembering the history of the emergence of any other breakthrough technology to accept the existing controversy as an integral part of progress. The desire of a person to make his work easier and shift part of the work onto a computer always makes him take a step forward in the development of technologies, which, in the end, do not allow a person to work less, but make him work in a new way.

This review analyzes the most influential artificial intelligence (AI) studies in health and life sciences from the past three years, delineating the evolving role of AI in these fields. We identified and analyzed the top 50 cited articles on AI in biomedicine, revealing significant trends and thematic categorizations, including Drug Development, Real-World Clinical Implementation, and Ethical and Regulatory Aspects, among others. Our findings highlight a predominant focus on AIs application in clinical settings, particularly in diagnostics, telemedicine, and medical education, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The emergence of AlphaFold marked a pivotal moment in protein structure prediction, catalyzing a cascade of related research and signifying a broader shift towards AI-driven approaches in biological research. The review underscores AIs pivotal role in disease subtyping and patient stratification, facilitating a transition towards more personalized medicine strategies. Furthermore, it illustrates AIs impact on biology, particularly in parsing complex genomic and proteomic data, enhancing our capabilities to disentangle complex, interconnected molecular processes. As AI continues to permeate the health and life sciences, balancing its rapid technological advancements with ethical stewardship and regulatory vigilance will be crucial for its sustainable and effective integration into healthcare and research.

Manuscript writing support services using AI technology have become increasingly available in recent years. In keeping with this trend, we need to sort out issues related to authorship in academic writing. Authorship is attached to the contribution of researchers who report innovative research, the originality of which forms the core of their identity. The most important originality is demonstrated in the discussion of study findings. In the discussion section of this paper, we argue that if a researcher uses AI-based manuscript writing support to draft the discussion section, this does not necessarily diminish the researcher’s originality. Rather, AI support may allow the researcher to perform creative work in a more refined fashion. Presumably, selecting which AI support to use or evaluating and properly adjusting AI would still remain an important aspect of research for researchers. It is thus reasonable to view a researcher as a cooperative existence realized through a network of cooperative work that includes the use of AI. Discussions on this topic will be scientifically and socially important as AI technology advances in the future.

In recent years, the healthcare industry has faced numerous challenges in ensuring efficient and reliable supply chain management. The emergence of novel supply chain-based frameworks has presented promising solutions to these challenges. This survey paper aims to explore and analyze the latest advancements in supply chain frameworks specifically tailored for the healthcare industry. We review the existing literature, identify key trends, and highlight the potential impact of these frameworks on improving patient care, optimizing inventory management, enhancing operational efficiency, and reducing costs. Additionally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation of these frameworks and suggest future research directions.

The research paper contends that Artificial Intelligence (AI) serves as a collaborative partner in architectural design, rather than merely a utility tool. To substantiate this argument, a three-phase, nine-test investigation evaluating the strengths and limitations of two prominent AI platforms: Midjourney AI and Stable Diffusion was undertaken. These platforms synergize human creativity and AI capabilities through features like text prompts and image references, thereby fostering innovative avenues in architecture. Our analysis indicates that Midjourney AI is proficient in generating initial design concepts, largely thanks to its extensive data libraries, but is deficient in design refinement and user control. Conversely, Stable Diffusion empowers designers with greater control via features like ControlNet but sacrifices visual clarity due to its smaller generative models. Both platforms share a common flaw: an overemphasis on aesthetics and shape at the expense of functional understanding. Building upon these empirical observations, the paper outlines strategies for designers to reasonably leverage AI in optimising workflows. It confirms two key hypotheses concerning the interplay of creativity, control, and collaboration, emphasising that both human architects and AI systems benefit from iterative feedback and continuous adaptation. In summary, the study posits that AI is not just an adjunct technology but a transformative force with the capacity to fundamentally alter architectural design processes, paving the way for a new paradigm where human expertise and machine capabilities converge for enriched design outcomes.

We dissect its foundational architecture and the key elements that enable seamless AI integration. Our research categorizes semantic communications into various multimedia and task types, evaluating their applicability in both single and multitasking environments. We also investigate resource allocation and goal-oriented strategies, supported by empirical case studies. The paper concludes by spotlighting emerging trends, including AI, IoT, and 5G beyond. It identifies pressing challenges such as standardization, security, and efficiency. Our work provides a holistic understanding of contemporary semantic communications paradigms.

Can artificial agents act? Conceptual constellation for a de-humanised theory of action This paper embarks on an exploration of the concept of agency, traditionally ascribed to humans, in the context of artificial intelligence (AI). In the first two sections, it challenges the conventional dichotomy of human agency and non- human instrumentality, arguing that advancements in technology have blurred these boundaries. In the third section, the paper introduces the reader to the philosophical perspective of new materialism, which assigns causal power to matter itself. This perspective suggests that agency is an emergent property of material configurations, prompting a re-evaluation of nonhuman agency. The fourth and fifth section revisit the legacy of cybernetics to understand systemic properties and feedback mechanisms, while re-admitting in the discourse also linear conditioning (discarded by new materialism) and assigning it a role in system dynamics. In the sixth section, in the light of the conceptual background examined so far, the paper proposes a revision of determinism (again partly in opposition to the new materialism and its indeterministic view) that can include both linear conditioning and circular interactions. The seventh section is devoted to propose a novel theory of action that includes AI systems – and artificial entities in general – as agents that can impact their environment and human systems. The exploration concludes with a discussion on the implications of this perspective for our understanding of action and responsibility in the age of AI.

As urbanization continues to pose new challenges for cities around the world, the concept of smart cities is a promising solution, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing a central role in this transformation. This paper presents a literature review of AI solutions applied in smart cities, focusing on its six main areas: smart mobility, smart environment, smart governance, smart living, smart economy, and smart people. The analysis covers publications from 2021 to 2024 available on Scopus. This paper examines the application of AI in each area and identifies barriers, advances, and future directions. The authors set the following goals of the analysis: (1) to identify solutions and applications using artificial intelligence in smart cities; (2) to identify the barriers to implementation of artificial intelligence in smart cities; and (3) to explore directions of the usage of artificial intelligence in smart cities.

With the rapid advancement of AI, customs authorities worldwide are increasingly adopting automated systems to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and security of cross-border trade operations. However, as AI systems take on significant roles in decision-making processes traditionally overseen by humans, concerns regarding legality, accountability, and transparency become prominent. Through a thorough examination of existing legal frameworks, international agreements, and relevant case law related to AI implementation in customs procedures, this research conducts a comprehensive analysis. It seeks to shed light on the evolving legal landscape surrounding AI in customs operations through a comparative study of various regulatory approaches and interpretations. Additionally, the paper scrutinises emerging ethical considerations and policy challenges arising from AI adoption, emphasising the necessity for coherent legal frameworks that uphold fundamental rights while promoting innovation and facilitating trade. By synthesising legal, ethical, and practical viewpoints, this study contributes to a nuanced comprehension of the intricate dynamics influencing the legality of artificial intelligence in customs procedures.

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) based electrochemical systems have the capability to operate in fuel cell (PEMFC) and water electrolyser (PEMWE) modes, enabling efficient hydrogen energy utilisation and green hydrogen production. In addition to the essential cell stacks, the system of PEMFC or PEMWE consists of four sub-systems for managing gas supply, power, thermal, and water, respectively. Due to the system's complexity, even a small fluctuation in a certain sub-system can result in an unexpected response, leading to a reduced performance and stability. To improve the system's robustness and responsiveness, considerable efforts have been dedicated to developing advanced control strategies. This paper comprehensively reviews various control strategies proposed in literature, revealing that traditional control methods are widely employed in PEMFC and PEMWE due to their simplicity, yet they suffer from limitations in accuracy. Conversely, advanced control methods offer high accuracy but are hindered by poor dynamic performance. This paper highlights the recent advancements in control strategies incorporating machine learning algorithms. Additionally, the paper provides a perspective on the future development of control strategies, suggesting that hybrid control methods should be used for future research to leverage the strength of both sides. Notably, it emphasises the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing control strategies, demonstrating its significant potential in facilitating the transition from automation to autonomy.

[Purpose/Significance] In recent years, the national leadership has attached great importance to the inheritance and innovation of China's excellent traditional culture, and the concepts of creative transformation and innovative development are constantly evolving. The Ministry of Science and Technology of China, among six departments, jointly formulated the "Guidelines for Promoting the Deep Integration of Culture and Technology", proposing to form a "cultural and technological integration innovation system covering key areas and critical links, to achieve the goal of in-depth integration of culture and technology". Intangible cultural heritage (ICH), as an essential part of China's excellent traditional culture, plays a crucial role in consolidating the sense of the Chinese national community and enhancing cultural self-confidence. This paper discusses the research paths for the creative transformation and innovative development of ICH in the context of culture and technology integration, emphasizing the significant role of modern technology in promoting the transformation and development of ICH. [Method/Process] The paper first interprets the connotation of "creative transformation and innovative development" in ICH, and clarifies the theoretical foundation and guiding principles of "creative transformation and innovative development" in ICH. It then analyzes the significant contributions of "creative transformation and innovative development" in ICH to society, economy, and cultural diversity, as well as the categorized scenarios of technology empowerment in "creative transformation and innovative development" of ICH. It discusses six types of common key technologies that enable technology-driven "creative transformation and innovative development" in ICH, including digital technology, virtual and augmented reality, big data analysis, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. It summarizes a three-tier framework system for technology-driven "creative transformation and innovative development" in ICH, namely the method layer, technology layer, and object layer, forming a progressive relationship from theory to technology and then to specific practices. Finally, by integrating the specific example of the traditional craft of Wuhu iron painting, it demonstrates the facilitating role of modern technology in the "creative transformation and innovative development" of ICH and its impact on the protection, inheritance, and innovative development of ICH. [Results/Conclusions] The findings suggest that technological means can effectively protect and inherit ICH, facilitating its creative transformation and innovative development. However, it also requires careful consideration and precautions against the potential risks and challenges that modern technology poses to ICH projects in terms of intellectual property rights, the digital divide, and the indirect nature of experiences. Looking to the future, with the emergence of more innovative technologies, modern technology will not only help to protect and pass on traditional culture but also give new connotations and expressions to traditional culture, ensuring that its unique value and charm continue to play out in an ever-changing world.

Federated Learning (FL) emerged as a significant advancement in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), enabling collaborative model training across distributed devices while maintaining data privacy. As the importance of FL and its application in various areas increased, addressing trustworthiness issues in its various aspects became crucial. In this survey, we provided a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art research on Trustworthy FL, exploring existing solutions and key foundations relevant to Trustworthiness in FL. There has been significant growth in the literature on trustworthy centralized Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL). However, there is still a need for more focused efforts toward identifying trustworthiness pillars and evaluation metrics in FL. In this paper, we proposed a taxonomy encompassing five main classifications for Trustworthy FL, including Interpretability and Explainability, Transparency, Privacy and Robustness, Fairness, and Accountability. Each category represents a dimension of trust and is further broken down into different sub-categories. Moreover, we addressed trustworthiness in a Decentralized FL (DFL) setting. Communication efficiency is essential for ensuring Trustworthy FL. This paper also highlights the significance of communication efficiency within various Trustworthy FL pillars and investigates existing research on communication-efficient techniques across these pillars. Our survey comprehensively addresses trustworthiness challenges across all aspects within the Trustworthy FL settings. We also proposed a comprehensive architecture for Trustworthy FL, detailing the fundamental principles underlying the concept, and provided an in-depth analysis of trust assessment mechanisms. In conclusion, we identified key research challenges related to every aspect of Trustworthy FL and suggested future research directions. This comprehensive survey served as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners working on the development and implementation of Trustworthy FL systems, contributing to a more secure and reliable AI landscape.

Industry 4.0 solutions such as the use of AI are becoming increasingly visible in everyday logistics processes. Many publications have already dealt with what technological innovations could be introduced to improve the flow of materials, but relatively few have dealt with the extent to which these theoretical solutions are also present in practice. In connection with this gap, the current research aims to examine the effectiveness and impact of AI use in the logistics field. This paper is a follow-up study on the topic as the logistics AI use was already analyzed in Pest County in the framework of this study direction. Since this study is still the second step of the already commenced research work, the very study does not try to draw conclusions leading to generalization but rather aims to draw causal conclusions of a pilot nature. In the research tools, the paper uses the qualitative design from the previous study (applied in another geographical territory-Zala County) but at the same time examines other analyzing methods like SEM modelling as a potential tool to be integrated.

This paper delves into what the application of authenticity to Human-Machine Communication (HMC) can teach us about authenticity and us as HMC researchers and as a com- munity. Inspired by the 2023 pre-conference “HMC: Authenticity in communicating with machines,” two central questions guide the discussion: How does HMC contribute to our understanding of authentic communication with machines? And how can the concept of authenticity contribute to our sense of self as researchers within the HMC field? Through the collaborative effort of 22 authors, the paper explores the re-conceptualization of authenticity and presents recent areas of tension that guide the HMC research and community. With this paper we aim at offering a gateway for scholars to connect and engage with the evolving HMC field.

Holographic-type communication (HTC) is on the verge of revolutionizing current communication paradigms. It will seamlessly connect people from distant locations through a fully immersive experience that will engage all five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. However, the practical realization and widespread adoption of HTC impose significant demands on current networks and end-user devices. While recent studies have primarily focused on discussing the HTC challenges and potential research directions, this paper takes a further step by evaluating the capabilities of wireless networks to meet HTC requirements. Specifically, it highlights the limitations of the fifth-generation (5G) networks by identifying HTC-related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and explores the potential of the sixth-generation (6G) networks. Moreover, it not only proposes potential research approaches for HTC enhancement but also analyzes their impact on the challenges in HTC implementation. Finally, the paper questions the ubiquitous potential of 6G, suggesting that a coordinated approach leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for jointly optimizing user sites and communication networks is the most promising strategy, rather than solely relying on the capabilities of specific network generations.

Around 2020, 5G began its commercialization journey, and discussions about the next-generation networks (such as 6G) emerged. Researchers predict that 6G networks will have higher bandwidth, coverage, reliability, energy efficiency, and lower latency, and will be an integrated “human-centric” network system powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This 6G network will lead to many real-time automated decisions, ranging from network resource allocation to collision avoidance for self-driving cars. However, there is a risk of losing control over decision-making due to the high-speed, data-intensive AI decision-making that may go beyond designers’ and users’ comprehension. To mitigate this risk, explainable AI (XAI) methods can be used to enhance the transparency of the black-box AI decision-making process. This paper surveys the application of XAI towards the upcoming 6G age, including 6G technologies (such as intelligent radio and zero-touch network management) and 6G use cases (such as industry 5.0). Additionally, the paper summarizes the lessons learned from recent attempts and outlines important research challenges in applying XAI for 6G use cases soon.

This paper presents a systematic bibliometric analysis of the artificial intelligence (AI) domain to explore privacy protection research as AI technologies integrate and data privacy concerns rise. Understanding evolutionary patterns and current trends in this research is crucial. Leveraging bibliometric techniques, the authors analyze 8,322 papers from the Web of Science (WoS) database, spanning 1990 to 2023. The analysis highlights IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering and IEEE Access journals as highly influential, the former being an early contributor and the latter emerging as a pivotal source. The study demonstrates substantial disparities in scientific productivity across countries. Specifically, the top 10 countries collectively accounted for 74.8% of the articles, with China and the USA making up nearly half of the total contribution (46.1%). In contrast, regions in Africa and South America exhibited lower scientific production. The evolution of privacy preservation research is reflected, shifting from an algorithm-oriented approach to a focus on data orientation, and subsequently, to privacy solutions centered around Cloud Computing. In recent years, there has been a shift towards embracing Federated Learning and Differential Privacy. The analysis brings to light emerging themes and identifies research gaps, notably a global disparity in research output and a lag in ethical and legal inquiry. It asserts that enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration is imperative to formulate comprehensive privacy solutions for AI. Specifically, the paper imparts invaluable insights that are pivotal for effectively addressing the evolving privacy concerns in the era of AI and big data.

The sixth-generation (6G) communication technology has potential in various applications, for instance, industrial automation, intelligent transportation, healthcare systems, and energy consumption prediction. On the other hand, the concerns of privacy measures and security measures in 6G-enabled networks are considered critical issues and challenges. The integration of 6G with advanced technologies for example computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) is a common theme in this paper. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges and advancements required for 6G technology to be utilized with other technologies, involving edge technology, big data analytics, and deep learning. In this review paper, the authors overview the integration of 6G with cutting-edge technologies like IoT, IoMT, AI, and edge computing that address human requirements and issues. In addition, to make values for new technologies like Big data, federated learning machine learning, deep learning, and multiple aspects are merged collectively to offer a network for the machine and human growing era. These integrations can be utilized for monitoring energy consumption in real-time, intelligent transportation solutions, improved security in industrial applications, signal reconstruction, and industrial automation. Additionally, the authors illustrate the critical considerations and challenges that face the integration of 6G for instance, performance requirements, security, and privacy concerns. Overall, this paper suggests that 6G communication technology can revolutionize different sides of our society, and enhance efficiency and accuracy in various future industrial automation and sectors.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied in the legal field has gained considerable ground in the recent years and is used in many fields, amongst which the legal one is of no exception. This paper wishes to explore the quality of the translation (from English into Italian) of an arbitration clause performed by the ChatGPT chatbot. To do so, the automatically generated target text is post-edited by consulting the BoLC (Bononia Legal Corpus) and the web as corpus in the gov.it Italian governmental domain. General and legal dictionaries are also used. The paper findings report some inaccuracies at word level which are easily tackled by corpus consultation. In view of the results obtained, however, complete reliance upon AI-driven solutions is not recommendable at the time being. Conversely, the use of ad hoc corpora and of targeted web searches are the most feasible and reliable solutions, although time-consuming.

Being able to reciprocate and produce different kinds of texts is a key quality and a core professional competence. Therefore, genre competence is fundamental in not only educational and academic contexts but also professional environments. This paper addresses the extent to which text-generating AI tools could support the development of genre competence and how suitable they are as a tool for genre-based writing didactics. To answer this, it is necessary to examine whether AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are competent in terms of text genres. To do this, the research explores whether ChatGPT is capable of producing and revising genre-specific texts or identifying and analyzing genre-specific patterns and whether it produces different outputs in terms of genre. To examine these questions, we have conducted a pilot study that includes several different text types and several areas of application (generating, revising, summarizing, classifying, and analyzing). The paper’s results relate to three aspects of “Education in the Digital World”: a) competencies, b) possible changes to educational and learning processes using AI tools, and c) appropriate tools for education in general.

Most real-world classification problems deal with imbalanced datasets, posing a challenge for Artificial Intelligence (AI), i.e., machine learning algorithms, because the minority class, which is of extreme interest, often proves difficult to be detected. This paper empirically evaluates tree boosting methods' performance given different dataset sizes and class distributions, from perfectly balanced to highly imbalanced. For tabular data, tree-based methods such as XGBoost, stand out in several benchmarks due to detection performance and speed. Therefore, XGBoost and Imbalance-XGBoost are evaluated. After introducing the motivation to address risk assessment with machine learning, the paper reviews evaluation metrics for detection systems or binary classifiers. It proposes a method for data preparation followed by tree boosting methods including hyper-parameter optimization. The method is evaluated on private datasets of 1 thousand (K), 10K and 100K samples on distributions with 50, 45, 25, and 5 percent positive samples. As expected, the developed method increases its recognition performance as more data is given for training and the F1 score decreases as the data distribution becomes more imbalanced, but it is still significantly superior to the baseline of precision-recall determined by the ratio of positives divided by positives and negatives. Sampling to balance the training set does not provide consistent improvement and deteriorates detection. In contrast, classifier hyper-parameter optimization improves recognition, but should be applied carefully depending on data volume and distribution. Finally, the developed method is robust to data variation over time up to some point. Retraining can be used when performance starts deteriorating.

Images privacy involves assessing the amount of information leakage from images, assessing risks associated with identification, and examining controls on this information. It was discussed various types of protection available and most commonly used in providing privacy to a person in images, including single-stage and two-stage detection algorithms. The results of each algorithm are organized in detailed tables, and the [YOLO] algorithm expands on all versions. The paper also clarifies the dataset used for testing the algorithms and its relevance to achieving desired results. It presents a comprehensive understanding of the process of detecting persons in digital images and assesses various tools and algorithms for recognizing persons, faces, and identities. It added an extensive examination of the several methods used to identify persons in digital images, with a specific emphasis on safeguarding their privacy. The task at hand is assessing various face recognition and identification tools and algorithms, with a specific emphasis on those that exhibit superior accuracy and efficiency in presenting outcomes. The study concluded that using the yolov8 algorithm in conjunction with blurring techniques effectively conceals individuals' information in digital images while maintaining the integrity of the overall image. The research paper's implications and information can practically contribute to the development of algorithms for detecting and protecting people in digital images, as well as the development of applications in this field. Theoretically, it can enhance understanding of the process of detecting and protecting people, and potentially contribute to the development of new theories in the field of protection and discovery.

This paper approaches AI in TEFL teacher education from a perspective of digital text sovereignty (digitale Textsouveränität). Digital sovereignty (digitale Souveränität) is a concept that goes beyond media literacy and data literacy as a set of skills, to include personal competences in a more Humboldtian vision of education. Digital text sovereignty focusses on all those aspects of digital sovereignty that apply to the reception and production of texts, from the ability to produce and consume digital texts to the development of a critically-reflexive attitude to these texts (Frederking, 2022; Frederking & Krommer, 2022), making it especially useful in contexts of TEFL teacher education. This paper is based on an empirical study conducted within the EFL teacher education department of a German metropolitan university during the 2023 summer term. It analyses 21 student essays written after an interactive 90-minute training session on ChatGPT conducted in three intact TEFL teacher education seminars. Qualitative content analysis is used to identify domains of digital text sovereignty discussed in these essays, and to identify key themes related to four aspects of digital text sovereignty: Mediality, Source Code, Intentionality, and Veracity. The findings might be of interest for researchers and teachers educators interested in (a) modelling digital text sovereignty as it applies to AI, and (b) developing teacher education material and programs that target digital text sovereignty in an AI context, or that aim to support (future) teachers in developing an AI-informed pedagogy.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration offer great potential for the future of corporate automation and increased productivity. RPA rapidly evolves into Intelligent Process Automation (IPA) by incorporating advanced technologies and capabilities beyond simple task automation. The paper aims to identify the organisational, technological, and human-centred challenges that companies face in transitioning from RPA to IPA. The research process involved conducting the scientific literature search using the ResearchRabbit AI tool, which provided a set of reference papers relevant to the formulated research questions. As a result of the conducted literature review, the authors identified key challenges and possible countermeasures for companies transitioning from RPA to IPA. The resulting collection of reference scientific articles formed the basis for this study’s content and substantive analysis. Furthermore, this study contributes by identifying artificial intelligence techniques and algorithms, such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), predictive analytics, and others, that can be integrated with RPA to facilitate the transition to IPA. The paper also offers insights into potential future research areas.

The paper aims to examine the evolving retail sector in recent years, specifically how digitalisation and technological innovations have transformed it. All actors have had to adapt to remain competitive. Notably, a new innovation in the retail sector, namely the checkout-free or cashierless store, emerged in 2018. Systematic literature is relied upon to achieve the study's objectives. The significance of this study lies in the use of multiple IT tools such as AI, cameras, sensors, and self-organising shelves to replace human intervention in the retail sector. Globally, several startup companies have developed this new unmanned solution, and Amazon Go stands out as one of the most well-known among them. The primary objective of this pioneering concept is to enhance efficiency by saving time and reducing queues. The aim is to enable customers to enter and exit the store with minimal human contact as quickly as possible. This paper presents the recent trend of the cashierless concept, its evolution, and proliferation. A systematic literature review and data analysis from the Crunchbase Database were conducted. The findings demonstrate that this recent concept is altering both consumers’ purchasing behaviours and companies’ business models. This paper provides novel perspectives and insights into the wider literature on cashierless concepts and smart retail in the context of digital business.

This paper analyzes the ways that the widespread use of generative AIs (GAIs) in education and, more broadly, in contributing to and reflecting the collective intelligence of our species, can and will change us. Methodologically, the paper applies a theoretical model and grounded argument to present a case that GAIs are different in kind from all previous technologies. The model extends Brian Arthur’s insights into the nature of technologies as the orchestration of phenomena to our use by explaining the nature of humans’ participation in their enactment, whether as part of the orchestration (hard technique, where our roles must be performed correctly) or as orchestrators of phenomena (soft technique, performed creatively or idiosyncratically). Education may be seen as a technological process for developing these soft and hard techniques in humans to participate in the technologies, and thus the collective intelligence, of our cultures. Unlike all earlier technologies, by embodying that collective intelligence themselves, GAIs can closely emulate and implement not only the hard technique but also the soft that, until now, was humanity’s sole domain; the very things that technologies enabled us to do can now be done by the technologies themselves. Because they replace things that learners have to do in order to learn and that teachers must do in order to teach, the consequences for what, how, and even whether learning occurs are profound. The paper explores some of these consequences and concludes with theoretically informed approaches that may help us to avert some dangers while benefiting from the strengths of generative AIs. Its distinctive contributions include a novel means of understanding the distinctive differences between GAIs and all other technologies, a characterization of the nature of generative AIs as collectives (forms of collective intelligence), reasons to avoid the use of GAIs to replace teachers, and a theoretically grounded framework to guide adoption of generative AIs in education.

The falling cost of IoT cameras, the advancement of AI-based computer vision algorithms, and powerful hardware accelerators for deep learning have enabled the widespread deployment of surveillance cameras with the ability to automatically analyze streaming video feeds to detect events of interest. While streaming video analytics is currently largely performed in the cloud, edge computing has emerged as a pivotal component due to its advantages of low latency, reduced bandwidth, and enhanced privacy. However, a distinct gap persists between state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and the successful practical implementation of edge-based streaming video analytics systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of more than 30 research papers published over the last 6 years on IoT edge streaming video analytics (IE-SVA) systems. The papers are analyzed across 17 distinct dimensions. Unlike prior reviews, we examine each system holistically, identifying their strengths and weaknesses in diverse implementations. Our findings suggest that certain critical topics necessary for the practical realization of IE-SVA systems are not sufficiently addressed in current research. Based on these observations, we propose research trajectories across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons. Additionally, we explore trending topics in other computing areas that can significantly impact the evolution of IE-SVA systems.

The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and machine learning (ML) has pioneered a transformation across several fields. Equipping electrical engineering students to remain abreast of the dynamic technological landscape is vital. This underscores the necessity for an educational tool that can be integrated into electrical engineering curricula to offer a practical way of learning the concepts and the integration of IoT, big data, and ML. Thus, this paper offers the IoT-Edu-ML-Stream open-source platform, a graphical user interface (GUI)-based emulation software tool to help electrical engineering students design and emulate IoT-based use cases with big data analytics. The tool supports the emulation or the actual connectivity of a large number of IoT devices. The emulated devices can generate realistic correlated IoT data and stream it via the message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol to a big data platform. The tool allows students to design ML models with different algorithms for their chosen use cases and train them for decision-making based on the streamed data. Moreover, the paper proposes learning outcomes to be targeted when integrating the tool into an electrical engineering curriculum. The tool is evaluated using a comprehensive survey. The survey results show that the students gained significant knowledge about IoT concepts after using the tool, even though many of them already had prior knowledge of IoT. The results also indicate that the tool noticeably improved the students’ practical skills in designing real-world use cases and helped them understand fundamental machine learning analytics with an intuitive user interface.

Abstract This paper proposes a total fusion of blockchain and AI tech for tomorrow’s viable, rich in diversity and transparent fisheries. It outlines the main goal of tackling overfishing challenges due to lack of transparency and biodiversity depletion in the fisheries sector. With the use of blockchain technology, we can ensure that all fishery products are safely traced from their harvest up to when they get to the market— at the same time, AI algorithms are used in monitoring fish populations and predicting them plus decision-making processes which should be enhanced thus promoting bio-diversity and ensuring sustainability of fish stocks. Results show promise on using both technologies together: improving sustainability plus transparency in fisheries which would promote more fish biodiversity, while others including using an artificial intelligence system have not been confirmed yet by observations. The conclusion underscores the transformative nature of these technologies as having great implications towards fisheries management; this implies that there is a need for future observational studies aimed at validating such other findings.

Abstract Background Crowding has been a longstanding issue in emergency departments. To address this, a fast-track system for avoidable patients is being implemented in the Paediatric Emergency Department where our study is conducted. Our goal is to develop an optimized Decision Support System that helps in directing patients to this fast track. We evaluated various Machine Learning models, focusing on a balance between complexity, predictive performance, and interpretability. Methods This is a retrospective study considering all visits to a university-affiliated metropolitan hospital’s PED between 2014 and 2019. Using information available at the time of triage, we trained several models to predict whether a visit is avoidable and should be directed to a fast-track area. Results A total of 507,708 visits to the PED were used in the training and testing of the models. Regarding the outcome, 41.6% of the visits were considered avoidable. Except for the classification made by triage rules, i.e. considering levels 1,2, and 3 as non-avoidable and 4 and 5 as avoidable, all models had similar results in model’s evaluation metrics, e.g. Area Under the Curve ranging from 74% to 80%. Conclusions Regarding predictive performance, the pruned decision tree had evaluation metrics results that were comparable to the other ML models. Furthermore, it offers a low complexity and easy to implement solution. When considering interpretability, a paramount requisite in healthcare since it relates to the trustworthiness and transparency of the system, the pruned decision tree excels. Overall, this paper contributes to the growing body of research on the use of machine learning in healthcare. It highlights practical benefits for patients and healthcare systems of the use ML-based DSS in emergency medicine. Moreover, the obtained results can potentially help to design patients’ flow management strategies in PED settings, which has been sought as a solution for addressing the long-standing problem of overcrowding.

It also presents several intuitive case studies to demonstrate the practical application of ChatGPT in seismic engineering. Further, the study contemplates the potential implications of AI, highlighting its potential to transform decision-making processes, augment education, and increase public engagement. While acknowledging the promising future of AI in seismic engineering, the study also considers the inherent challenges and limitations, including data privacy and potential oversimplification of content. It advocates for the collaborative efforts of AI researchers and seismic experts in overcoming these obstacles and enhancing the utility of AI in the field. This exploration provides an insightful perspective on the future of seismic engineering, which could be closely intertwined with the evolution of AI.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) serves as an essential tool in exploring brain activity and holds particular importance in the field of mental health research. This review paper examines the application of artificial intelligence (AI), encompassing machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), for classifying schizophrenia (SCZ) through EEG. It includes a thorough literature review that addresses the difficulties, methodologies, and discoveries in this field. ML approaches utilize conventional models like Support Vector Machines and Decision Trees, which are interpretable and effective with smaller data sets. In contrast, DL techniques, which use neural networks such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and long short-term memory networks (LSTMs), are more adaptable to intricate EEG patterns but require significant data and computational power. Both ML and DL face challenges concerning data quality and ethical issues. This paper underscores the importance of integrating various techniques to enhance schizophrenia diagnosis and highlights AI’s potential role in this process. It also acknowledges the necessity for collaborative and ethically informed approaches in the automated classification of SCZ using AI.

This paper investigates the complex interplay between generative artificial intelligence (AI) and human intellect in academic writing and publishing. It examines the ‘organic versus synthetic’ paradox, emphasizing the implications of using generative AI tools in educational and academic integrity contexts. The paper critiques the prevalent ‘publish or perish’ culture in academia, highlighting the need for systemic reevaluation due to generative AI’s emerging role in academic writing and reporting. It delves into the legal and ethical challenges of authorship and ownership, especially in relation to copyright laws and AI-generated content. The paper discusses generative AI’s diverse roles and advocates for transparent reporting to uphold academic integrity. Additionally, it calls for a broader examination of generative AI tools and stresses the need for new mechanisms to identify generative AI use and ensure adherence to academic integrity and ethics. The implications of generative AI are also explored, suggesting the need for innovative AI-inclusive strategies in academia. The paper concludes by emphasizing the significance of generative AI in various information-processing domains, highlighting the urgency to adapt and transform academic practices in an era of rapid generative AI-driven change.

This review paper aims to search the landscape of Extended Reality or XReality technology in light of Artificial Intelligence or AI. Through an examination of the Web of Science or WoS, a total of 29 studies were selected for review. We extracted information on the XReality with AI trends in the studies and further classified the pedagogical impact of the studies using the E3XReality framework suggesting that XReality technology may fall into three levels (three Es for XR hence E3XR): 1) Ethics (making sure we do and receive no harm in learning), 2) Educational effectiveness (making sure learning is effective to our goals and outcomes), and 3) Eudaimonia (making sure learning is both effective and ethical). Using open and axial coding, we find that a survey of perceptions or review of the literature was most often made, followed by the study of technical and pedagogical interventions. VR followed by MR was noted the most in the reviewed studies and surprisingly no mention of AR in the silo was made. The use of AI with XReality was mostly done to provide actionable insight, followed by insight and control. The analysis of studies against the conceptual framework E3XReality suggested that current work is largely at the education state and more work is needed to transition to a more sophisticated state of Eudaimonia. Further, several challenges were obtained from the 29 reviewed studies. The contribution of this paper is to offer an extensive synthesis of challenges as well as future recommendations for using XReality with AI in education.

The functions of human resource management (HRM) have changed radically in the past 20 years due to market and technological forces, becoming more cross-functional and data-driven. In the age of AI, the role of HRM professionals in organizations continues to evolve. Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming many HRM functions and practices throughout organizations creating system and process efficiencies, performing advanced data analysis, and contributing to the value creation process of the organization. A growing body of evidence highlights the benefits AI brings to the field of HRM. Despite the increased interest in AI-HRM scholarship, focus on human-AI interaction at work and AI-based technologies for HRM is limited and fragmented. Moreover, the lack of human considerations in HRM tech design and deployment can hamper AI digital transformation efforts. This paper provides a contemporary and forward-looking perspective to the strategic and human-centric role HRM plays within organizations as AI becomes more integrated in the workplace. Spanning three distinct phases of AI-HRM integration (technocratic, integrated, and fully-embedded), it examines the technical, human, and ethical challenges at each phase and provides suggestions on how to overcome them using a human-centric approach. Our paper highlights the importance of the evolving role of HRM in the AI-driven organization and provides a roadmap on how to bring humans and machines closer together in the workplace.

Abstract One of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 is to keep the unemployment rate at the lowest level to empower the economy. Prior research has shown that an increase in unemployment has a negative effect on a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This paper aims to utilise cutting-edge technology such as Data Lake (DL), Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist the Saudi labour market by matching job seekers with vacant positions. Currently, human experts carry out this process; however, this is time-consuming and labour-intensive. Moreover, in the Saudi labour market, this process does not use a cohesive data centre to monitor, integrate or analyse labour-market data, resulting in several inefficiencies, such as bias and latency. These inefficiencies arise from a lack of technologies and, more importantly, from having an open labour-market without a national data centre. This paper proposes a new AI Recruiting Model (AIRM) architecture that exploits DLs, ML and AI to rapidly and efficiently match job seekers to vacant positions in the Saudi labour market. A Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is employed to test the proposed AIRM architecture using a labour market dataset simulation corpus for training purposes; the architecture is further evaluated against three research collaborators who are all professionals in Human Resources (HR). As this research is data-driven in nature, it requires collaboration from domain experts. The first layer of the AIRM architecture uses balanced iterative reducing and clustering using hierarchies (BIRCH) as a clustering algorithm for the initial screening layer. The mapping layer uses sentence transformers with a robustly optimised BERT pre-training approach (RoBERTa) as the base model, and ranking is carried out using the Facebook AI Similarity Search (FAISS). Finally, the preferences layer takes the user’s preferences as a list and sorts the results using the pre-trained cross-encoders model, considering the weight of the more important words. This new AIRM has yielded favourable outcomes: This research considered accepting an AIRM selection ratified by at least one HR expert to account for the subjective character of the selection process when exclusively handled by human HR experts. The research evaluated the AIRM using two metrics: accuracy and time. The AIRM had an overall matching accuracy of 84%, with at least one expert agreeing with the system’s output. Furthermore, it completed the task in 2.4 min, whereas human experts took more than 6 days on average. Overall, the AIRM outperforms humans in task execution, making it useful in pre-selecting a group of applicants and positions. The AIRM is not limited to government services. It can also help any commercial business that uses Big Data.

Sixth-generation mobile networks (6G) are expected to reach extreme communication capabilities to realize emerging applications demanded by the future society. This paper focuses on six technological directions towards 6G, namely, intent-based networking, THz communication, artificial intelligence, distributed ledger technology/blockchain, smart devices and gadget-free communication, and quantum communication. These technologies will enable 6G to be more capable of catering to the demands of future network services and applications. Each of these technologies is discussed highlighting recent developments, applicability in 6G, and deployment challenges. It is envisaged that this work will facilitate 6G related research and developments, especially along the six technological directions discussed in the paper.

Digital twins are a relatively new form of digital modeling that has been gaining popularity in recent years. This is in large part due to their ability to update in real time to their physical counterparts and connect across multiple devices. As a result, much interest has been directed towards using digital twins in the healthcare industry. Recent advancements in smart wearable technologies have allowed for the utilization of human digital twins in healthcare. Human digital twins can be generated using biometric data from the patient gathered from wearables. These data can then be used to enhance patient care through a variety of means, such as simulated clinical trials, disease prediction, and monitoring treatment progression remotely. This revolutionary method of patient care is still in its infancy, and as such, there is limited research on using wearables to generate human digital twins for healthcare applications. This paper reviews the literature pertaining to human digital twins, including methods, applications, and challenges. The paper also presents a conceptual method for creating human body digital twins using wearable sensors.

Since its release in November 2022, ChatGPT and the related AI technology have disrupted multiple fields of society where people anticipate its pathways with a mixture of hope and fear. Among the affected fields, education, in particular, may incur one of the largest impacts in the future partly due to its nature of learning and teaching knowledge, an element that is more or less questioned by the rise of these technologies. As education can be seen as a component that determines the future of every other field of society, tools such as ChatGPT must be optimally regulated to enhance its gain or mitigate its loss. To contribute to this goal, this paper approaches the state of ChatGPT and its expected impacts on higher education through the lens of two major educational theories—John Dewey’s Reflective-Thought-and-Action model and revised Bloom’s taxonomy—aiming to propose possible evaluative criteria for the optimal usage of ChatGPT in academia. As ChatGPT is a relatively new topic of research yet a topic that requires an immediate focus due to its capabilities, this paper also aims to provide these criteria as one of the concrete starting points of future research in this field.

It articulates the transition from conventional health monitoring practices to a more advanced, comprehensive health management approach, leveraging these modern technologies. This paper emphasizes the pivotal shift from reactive maintenance strategies to proactive and predictive maintenance paradigms, facilitated by the real-time data collection capabilities of IoT devices and the analytical prowess of AI. This transition not only enhances the safety and reliability of flight operations but also optimizes maintenance procedures, thereby reducing operational costs and improving efficiency. This paper meticulously outlines the implementation challenges, including technological integration, regulatory compliance, and security concerns, while proposing a future research agenda to address these issues and further harness the potential of these technologies in revolutionizing aviation maintenance.

This paper advocates for a proactive approach to traffic safety by introducing a collaborative Misbehaviour Response System (MBR) designed to preemptively address hazardous driving behaviours such as wrong-way driving and distracted driving. The system integrates with electric vehicles (EVs), leveraging advanced technologies like ADAS, edge computing, and cloud services to enhance road safety. Upon detection of misbehaviour, the MBR system utilizes data from interconnected parking facilities to identify the nearest safe location and provides navigation guidance to authorities and nearby vehicles. The paper presents a prototype of the MBR system, demonstrating its efficiency in detecting misbehaviours and coordinating swift responses. It also discusses the system’s limitations and societal implications, outlining future research directions, including integration with autonomous vehicle systems and variable speed limit technologies, to further improve road safety through proactive and context-aware response mechanisms.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a branch of computer science, artificial intelligence, information engineering, and linguistics that focuses on enabling machines to understand, interpret, and generate human language. Machine translation, sentiment analysis, speech recognition, and question-answering systems are just a few examples of NLP applications. NLP has advanced rapidly in recent years, owing to the availability of large amounts of text data and the development of deep learning models, which has resulted in increased accuracy and efficiency in NLP tasks. This paper tackles the state of the art of NLP, its methodology and techniques, and its applications in different fields. The paper also discusses the role of NLP to improve education.

Abstract Developing AI systems for automatic train operation (ATO) requires developers to have a deep understanding of the human tasks they are trying to replace. This paper fills this gap and translates the regulatory requirements from the context of German railways for the AI developer community. As a result, tasks such as train’s path monitoring for collision prediction, signal detection, door operation, etc. are identified. Based on this analysis, a functionally justified sensor setup with detailed configuration requirements is presented. This setup was also evaluated by a survey within the railway industry. The evaluated sensors include RGB/IR cameras, LIDARs, radars and ultrasonic sensors. Calculations and estimates for the evaluated sensors are presented graphically and included in this paper. However, the ultimate sensor setup is still a subject of research. The results of this paper also address the lack of training and test datasets for railway AI systems. It is proposed to acquire research datasets that will allow the training of domain adaptation algorithms to transform other datasets, thus increasing the number of available datasets. The sensor setup is also recommended for such research datasets.
