Pulp and paper manufacturing ranks as one of the most water and energy-intensive sectors globally, invariably leading to significant environmental pollution e.g. issues related to air pollution and waste disposal. Also, as global competition intensifies, prices of forest products are expected to keep decreasing. To ensure their viability, traditional producers must augment their revenue streams by diversifying into the production of bioenergy and biomaterials, alongside traditional wood, pulp, and paper products. A feasible solution is the integrated products biorefineries which provide a distinctive chance to pulp and paper industry to enhance revenues as well as reduce their environmental impact. Since pulp and paper stands as the predominant industry in Sweden, this review article explores the emerging biorefinery process options and main technological pathways being developed within Swedish pulp and paper mills. It also delves into the significant challenges that are being encountered in this evolving landscape and what possibilities lie ahead for responsible and sustainable pulp and paper operations.

This study focussed on the development of fully biodegradable composites based on polybutylene succinate (PBS) in combination with raw materials from different processing stages of the pulp and paper industry. Sulfite pulp (SP), kraft pulp (KP) and screened sludge residue (SL) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) were investigated as reinforcing fibres contributing to a circular economy. We report a comparative study of the physicochemical properties and mechanical performance of PBS composites reinforced with these cellulosic raw fibres and commercial pure microcrystalline cellulose (MC). The composites were characterised in tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, water absorption and wettability. The incorporation of the fibres into the polymer matrix was also investigated using torque rheometry. Critical concentrations were obtained with maximum incorporation in the range of 15–20 wt% for SP/KP and 25–30 wt% for SL. SP and KP composites showed at least as good physicochemical and mechanical properties as MC at the concentrations studied (0–20 wt%). SP-composites showed the highest tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. It was shown that these fibres from the pulp and paper industry can be used as reinforcement for PBS matrices without additional chemical purification and provide a valuable alternative to commercial microcrystalline cellulose. Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) have been proposed to facilitate mechanistic understanding of interactions of chemicals/materials with biological systems. Each AOP starts with a molecular initiating event (MIE) and possibly ends with adverse outcome(s) (AOs) via a series of key events (KEs). So far, the interaction of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) with biomolecules, biomembranes, cells, and biological structures, in general, is not yet fully elucidated. There is also a huge lack of information on which AOPs are ENMs-relevant or -specific, despite numerous published data on toxicological endpoints they trigger, such as oxidative stress and inflammation. We propose to integrate related data and knowledge recently collected. Our approach combines the annotation of nanomaterials and their MIEs with ontology annotation to demonstrate how we can then query AOPs and biological pathway information for these materials. We conclude that a FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) representation of the ENM-MIE knowledge simplifies integration with other knowledge. The development of green and efficient bio‐based flame retardants is very important for the development of flame‐retardant cellulosic paper. In this study, a novel type of starch‐based synergistic flame retardant (SAPU) was prepared using corn starch as carbon sources, amino trimethylphosphonic acid, and urea as phosphorus and nitrogen sources through the one‐pot method. Subsequently, the flame‐retardant cellulosic paper was prepared by impregnation, and the flame retardancy of the cellulosic paper was evaluated by vertical combustion, limiting oxygen index (LOI), and thermogravimetric analysis. The results demonstrated that the SAPU exhibited a favorable flame‐retardant effect on cellulosic paper. At a concentration of 25.0%, the vertical burning residue of flame‐retardant paper accounted for 49.16% of the total length of the paper sample, while the LOI was 39.4%. The tensile strength and burst index of cellulosic paper were found to be decreased by 6.36% and 19.1%, respectively, in comparison to the base paper. Conversely, the ring crush strength was observed to be increased by 156.2%. The carbon residue rate at 700°C under a nitrogen atmosphere rose from 11.56% of the base paper to 28.77% of the flame‐retardant paper. Cellulose is commonly acknowledged as a sustainable material owing to its abundance and renewability. However, the abundance of hydroxyl groups makes the paper material highly hydrophilic, and the hydrogen bonds between the fibers are easily broken by water, leading to the degradation of mechanical properties. This work details the fabrication of a composite paper comprising interwoven cellulose and polylactic acid (PLA) structures through hot‐pressing and PLA impregnation onto handwritten paper derived from conventional wood pulp fibers as the substrate. The investigation assessed how varying PLA concentrations influenced the overall characteristics of the composite paper, including its morphology, structure, mechanical properties, water absorption behavior, and water contact angle. Experimental results revealed that the composite paper fabricated through our approach exhibited an intertwined structure comprising both PLA and cellulose. With a tensile index reaching 33.24 kN·m/kg and a mere 31.1% loss in tensile index post‐water treatment, the mechanical properties of the composite paper were significantly enhanced due to the robust interfacial compatibility between cellulose and PLA, as well as the adhesive effect of PLA. Furthermore, the composite paper (CP) is easily processable and amenable to thermoforming into paper trays as required, indicative of its potential applications in the packaging industry. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has emerged as a sustainable biomaterial with diverse industrial applications. This paper examines BC production through a circular economy framework, focusing on organic waste as a primary feedstock. It compares static and agitated cultivation methods for BC production, highlighting their advantages and limitations. Static cultivation using Gluconacetobacter xylinum yields high-quality cellulose films but is constrained by lower yields and longer incubation times. Agitated cultivation accelerates production but may affect fiber uniformity. This paper emphasizes sustainability by exploring organic waste materials such as coffee grounds, tea leaves, and food scraps as cost-effective nitrogen and carbon sources. These materials not only lower production costs but also support circular economy principles by converting waste into valuable products. BC produced from these waste sources retains key properties, making it suitable for applications in the textile and other industries. In addition, BC production can align with vegan principles, provided that all additives and processing methods are free of animal-derived components. The paper discusses BC's potential to replace synthetic fibers in textiles and reduce environmental impact. Case studies show successful BC integration into textile products. The aim of the paper was to highlight the importance and relevance of the proactive approach of microscopic laboratory techniques for prevention and control of major silkworm diseases thus contributing to the improvement of silkworm health and to augmentation of the sericulture production. The examinations were carried out by direct microscopy and laboratory diagnostic methods for specific diseases (bacterial, parasitic, mycotic and viral) according to the methodology of the OIE Manual, adapted to the conditions of the Laboratory of Genetics, Breeding and Pathology of Silkworms of S.C.S. Baneasa, Bucharest. Direct microscopical and bacterioscopic examinations were carried out to exclude the risk of the presence of pathogens in future generations selected for the conservation of the genetic background. Samples collected from the 84 breeds under conservation were subjected to direct microscopy and bacterioscopic examinations on two developmental stages of silkworms - egg and larval stage (L3). The results of the laboratory examinations required the elimination of inappropriate biological material from the reproduction, that allowed obtaining disease-free reproductive material of the best quality. Food packaging, which is typically made of paper/cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic, is essential for protecting and preserving food. However, the impact of conventional food packaging and especially the predominant use of plastics, due to their versatility and low cost, bring serious environmental and health problems such as pollution by micro and nanoplastics. In response to these challenges, biotechnology emerges as a new way for improving packaging by providing biopolymers as sustainable alternatives. In this context, bacterial cellulose (BC), a biodegradable and biocompatible material produced by bacteria, stands out for its mechanical resistance, food preservation capacity, and rapid degradation and is a promising solution for replacing plastics. However, despite its advantages, large-scale application still encounters technical and economic challenges. These include high costs compared to when conventional materials are used, difficulties in standardizing membrane production through microbial methods, and challenges in optimizing cultivation and production processes, so further studies are necessary to ensure food safety and industrial viability. Thus, this review provides an overview of the impacts of conventional packaging. It discusses the development of biodegradable packaging, highlighting BC as a promising biopolymer. Additionally, it explores biotechnological techniques for the development of innovative packaging through structural modifications of BC, as well as ways to optimize its production process. Wound healing progresses through three distinct stages: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Immune regulation is a central component throughout, crucial for orchestrating inflammatory responses, facilitating tissue repair, and restraining scar tissue formation. Elements such as mitochondria, reactive oxygen species (ROS), macrophages, autophagy, ferroptosis, and cytokines collaboratively shape immune regulation in this healing process. Skin wound dressings, recognized for their ability to augment biomaterials' immunomodulatory characteristics via antimicrobial, antioxidative, pro- or anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerative capacities, have garnered heightened attention. Notwithstanding, a lack of comprehensive research addressing how these dressings attain immunomodulatory properties and the mechanisms thereof persists. Hence, this paper pioneers a systematic review of biomaterials, emphasizing immune regulation and their underlying immunological mechanisms. It begins by highlighting the importance of immune regulation in wound healing and the peculiarities and obstacles faced in skin injury recovery. This segment explores the impact of wound metabolism, infections, systemic illnesses, and local immobilization on the immune response during healing. Subsequently, the review examines a spectrum of biomaterials utilized in skin wound therapy, including hydrogels, aerogels, electrospun nanofiber membranes, collagen scaffolds, microneedles, sponges, and 3D-printed constructs. It elaborates on the immunomodulatory approaches employed by these materials, focusing on mitochondrial and ROS modulation, autophagic processes, ferroptosis, macrophage modulation, and the influence of cytokines on wound healing. Acknowledging the challenge of antibiotic resistance, the paper also summarizes promising plant-based alternatives for biomaterial integration, including curcumin. In its concluding sections, the review charts recent advancements and prospects in biomaterials that accelerate skin wound healing via immune modulation. This includes exploring mitochondrial transplantation materials, biomaterial morphology optimization, metal ion incorporation, electrostimulation-enabled immune response control, and the benefits of composite materials in immune-regulatory wound dressings. Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a vascular disease of unknown etiology and can be categorized mainly into two types: non-traumatic and traumatic ONFH. Thus, understanding osteogenic–angiogenic coupling is of prime importance in finding a solution for the treatment of ONFH. Hydrogels are biomaterials that are similar to the extracellular matrix (ECM). As they are able to mimic real tissue, they meet one of the most important rules in tissue engineering. In ONFH studies, hydrogels have recently become popular because of their ability to retain water and their adjustable properties, injectability, and mimicry of natural ECM. Because bone regeneration and graft materials are very broad areas of research and ONFH is a complex situation including bone and vascular systems, and there is no settled treatment strategy for ONFH worldwide, in this review paper, we followed a top-down approach by reviewing (1) bone and bone grafting, (2) hydrogels, (3) vascular systems, and (4) ONFH and hydrogel use in ONFH with studies in the literature which show promising results in limited clinical studies. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has attracted significant attention due to its distinct structural attributes and remarkable physico-mechanical properties, making it highly popular in biomedical applications, such as artificial skin, blood vessels, tissue scaffolds, and wound dressings. However, its widespread application in a variety of fields is often limited by poor mechanical properties and functional characteristics. The development of BC-based composites by incorporating synthetic materials has been widely investigated to address these limitations. This review paper summarizes the fabrication strategies for BC composites in-situ and ex-situ methods for their development, and highlights their wide range of applications in diverse fields. Various strategies have been designed for the synthesis of BC composite functionalized materials, tailored to the specific nature of their intended application. In the synthesis of BC composites, either in-situ addition of reinforcing materials to the synthetic media or ex-situ incorporation of these materials into the microfilaments of the BC microfilaments is primarily involved. A wide range of materials have been used as reinforced materials, ranging from organic polymers to inorganic nanoparticles. These composite materials have the potential to be used for tissue regeneration, wound healing, enzyme immobilization, and the development of medical devices. Recent years have seen the development of BC composites incorporating conductive materials, being used in the production of various electrical products, such as biocatalysts, enzymes, e-papers, displays, electrical instruments, and optoelectronic devices. In summary, the synthesis of BC composites and their applications offers a path for producing advanced biomaterials with enhanced properties and diverse functionalities, exploring their potential as environmentally friendly and versatile materials applicable across multiple sectors. For orthopedic implants, biocompatibility is essential to ensure that they integrate with biological systems without causing negative reactions or impairing tissue function. Orthopedic implants must be cellularly acceptable to interact with neighboring tissues, including muscle, cartilage, and bone. Implant materials should not cause cytotoxic reactions or inflammatory responses that might hinder healing or result in long-term inflammation. Progress in surface engineering and biomaterials science is discovering implants that work well with the body, benefiting patients in the long run. The biocompatibility of orthopedic implants, their interaction with surrounding tissues, and the potential for biological problems are all important aspects of their design and operation. The paper presents the influence of the use of supplementary feedings on the development of bee colonies and venom production. We evaluated the venom production during harvests of rapeseed, acacia and sunflower. The research was carried out in the apiary of the Faculty of Bioengineering of Animal Resources within the ULST. The biological material was represented by 40 colonies of bees (Apis mellifera carpatica), divided into 8 experimental groups, each group consisting of 5 colonies with equal strength and a queen of the same age. During the spring, bee colonies were fed sugar syrup into which we introduced probiotic products and/or essential oils. Counting of brood cells was performed at 7, 14 and 21 days during supplementary feeding. At the end of the additional feeding period, as well as during rapeseed, acacia and sunflower harvests, venom was collected using the BeeWhisper v.5.1 venom collector, model 2016. Regarding venom production, the best results were observed in the case of additional feedings with the products used. Batches using Colobiotic (2.2 g venom), Oregano essential oil (2.1 g venom) and Lacium (2.1 g venom) had the highest amounts of venom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we report on the electrical impedance measurement of human endothelial cellular networks and show the existence of emergent power law behavior in its admittance. In particular, we find that the admittance scales with the frequency ω as ωα, with the exponent that varies with the degree of the disruption caused by the inflammation in the endothelial cellular network. We demonstrate that the power law of the measured electrical admittance can be understood by a simple percolation model of a large R–C (resistor–capacitor) network, which allows us to relate quantitatively and the intensity of inflammation. As adaptable biomaterials, hydrogels have shown great promise in several industries, which include the delivery of drugs, engineering of tissues, biosensing, and regenerative medicine. These hydrophilic polymer three-dimensional networks have special qualities like increased content of water, soft, flexible nature, as well as biocompatibility, which makes it excellent candidates for simulating the extracellular matrix and promoting cell development and tissue regeneration. With an emphasis on their design concepts, synthesis processes, and characterization procedures, this review paper offers a thorough overview of hydrogels. It covers the various hydrogel material types, such as natural polymers, synthetic polymers, and hybrid hydrogels, as well as their unique characteristics and uses. The improvements in hydrogel-based platforms for controlled drug delivery are examined. It also looks at recent advances in bioprinting methods that use hydrogels to create intricate tissue constructions with exquisite spatial control. The performance of hydrogels is explored through several variables, including mechanical properties, degradation behaviour, and biological interactions, with a focus on the significance of customizing hydrogel qualities for particular applications. This review paper also offers insights into future directions in hydrogel research, including those that promise to advance the discipline, such as stimuli-responsive hydrogels, self-healing hydrogels, and bioactive hydrogels. This paper reviews recent research on biopolymer and biotechnology-based bioplastics as a solution to plastic pollution. Plastics are becoming a substantial issue as society progresses, particularly with single-use variants. These packaging films are primarily composed of petroleum and refined with high heat, releasing carbon dioxide pollutants in the process. At the end of its lifespan, plastic is regularly thrown away in landfills and the environment, posing risks to human and ecosystem health. While bioplastics are prevalent in the market today, their lack of biodegradability and high costs prevent widespread use. As a result, studies about novel methods of producing biodegradable bioplastics have emerged. This paper reviews research concerning E. coli, chitosan, keratin, cellulose, and alginate as unconventional methods of synthesizing a new strand of bioplastics -- rigid 3D monoliths and flexible packaging films. Alginate composite films show the most promise in terms of sustainability, cost, mechanical properties, and ease of scalability but are restricted to low-humidity environments. Piezoelectric ceramics are piezoelectric materials with polycrystalline structure and have been widely used in many fields such as medical imaging and sound sensors. As knowledge about this kind of material develops, researchers find piezoelectric ceramics possess favorable piezoelectricity, biocompatibility, mechanical properties, porous structure and antibacterial effect and endeavor to apply piezoelectric ceramics to the field of bone tissue engineering. However, clinically no piezoelectric ceramics have been exercised so far. As a novel class of smart biomaterials with promising potentials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely utilized in the field of biomedicine. Current researches indicate that the therapeutic strategies for osteoarthritis (OA) are highly limited to achieving symptom improvement and reducing both pain and inflammation. Together, the introduction of MOFs into the treatment of OA holds the potential to offer significant benefits. This is because MOFs not only have intrinsic biological activities, but also act as carriers to facilitate controlled drug delivery and prolong the duration in the management of OA. This paper presents a review of the recent studies that have explored the potential usage of MOFs as drugs or carriers in the treatment of OA, which also examines the progress of MOFs in tissue engineering for the treatment of OA. Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) hydrogels have been investigated in biomedical research because of their versatile properties that make them suitable for various medical applications. Key properties that are especially valuable for biomedical use include biocompatibility, tailored solid-like mechanical characteristics, biodegradability, antibacterial activity, moisture retention, and pH stimuli-sensitive swelling. These features offer advantages such as enhanced healing, promotion of granulation tissue formation, and facilitation of neutrophil migration. As a result, CMCS hydrogels are favorable materials for applications in biopharmaceuticals, drug delivery systems, wound healing, tissue engineering, and more. Understanding the interactions between CMCS hydrogels and biological systems, with a focus on their influence on cellular behavior, is crucial for leveraging their versatility. Because of the constantly growing interest in chitosan and its derivative hydrogels in biomedical research and applications, the present review aims to provide updated insights into the potential medical applications of CMCS based on recent findings. Additionally, we comprehensively elucidated the cellular mechanisms underlying the actions of these hydrogels in medical settings. To meet the UN sustainable development goal targets by 2030, it is necessary to provide adequate, resilient, and affordable housing solutions which are also low-carbon. In the context of affordable housing in El Salvador, an improved vernacular construction system, following the composite bamboo shear wall (CBSW) technology, has been developed as a feasible option to fill the current housing deficit. A life cycle assessment (LCA) has been conducted comparing a house built using the CBSW system with a reinforced concrete hollow block masonry system, considering the A1 to A5 (raw material production and manufacture) and B4 (replacement) life cycle modules. The LCA scope was limited to modules where there was sufficient confidence in the inputs. End-of-life modules were excluded as there is a large degree of uncertainty in the end-of-life scenarios for these materials in the regional context. The LCA results show that the CBSW system has approximately 64% of the global warming potential (GWP) of the reinforced masonry house, and when considering biogenic carbon, this reduces to 53%. There is additional potential to minimise impacts and maximise end-of-life opportunities (e.g., re-use, biofuel, etc.) for the biomaterials within the CBSW system, if considering modules beyond the scope of this paper, and this needs further study. Nevertheless, the results from this LCA—of limited A1 to A5 and B4 scope—show that the CBSW system has significant sustainability advantages over conventional construction systems and is considered a promising solution to alleviate the housing deficit in El Salvador. Laminectomy is a commonly performed surgical procedure by orthopedic and neurosurgeons, aimed at alleviating nerve compression and reducing pain. However, in some cases, excessive proliferation of fibrous scar tissue in the epidural space post-surgery can lead to persistent and intractable lower back pain, a condition known as Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). The persistent fibrous tissue causes both physical and emotional distress for patients and also makes follow-up surgeries more challenging due to reduced visibility and greater technical difficulty. It has been established that the application of biomaterials to prevent epidural fibrosis post-lumbar surgery is more beneficial than revision surgeries to relieve dural fibrosis. Hydrogel-based biomaterials, with their excellent biocompatibility, degradability, and injectability and tunable mechanical properties, have been increasingly introduced by clinicians and researchers. This paper, building on the foundation of epidural fibrosis, primarily discusses the strategies for the preparation of natural and polymeric biomaterials to prevent epidural fibrosis, their physicochemical properties, and their ability to mitigate the excessive proliferation of fibroblasts. As a destructive phenomenon with possible detrimental impact especially when it comes to human life, tribocorrosion has always been imperative to be researched. Hence, various investigations have outlined its influential role in the biomaterial apparatuses. Also, disparate routes have been introduced to address this problem. The use of several types of alloys, the application of various types of coatings, and the production of porous layers are some of these efforts made till now. Because of this issue's importance, and lack of a comprehensive review paper in this area of research, this paper shows an overview of existing publications in this area of research. This study presents the important ideas behind studies and provides a perspective of the research trend. In this exploration, the critical elements of the tribocorrosion-related studies were discussed thoroughly. The origin of the problem and the influential parameters in the process like loading, manufacturing, environment, and surface innate oxide film were scrutinized. Also, the efficacy of the use of different alloys, coatings, and the recommended modifications with respect to the tribocorrosion was discovered. Conductive hydrogels, characterized by their excellent conductivity and flexibility, have attracted widespread attention and research in the field of flexible wearable sensors. This paper reviews the application progress, related challenges, and future prospects of conductive hydrogels in flexible wearable sensors. Initially, the basic properties and classifications of conductive hydrogels are introduced. Subsequently, this paper discusses in detail the specific applications of conductive hydrogels in different sensor applications, such as motion detection, medical diagnostics, electronic skin, and human–computer interactions. Finally, the application prospects and challenges are summarized. Overall, the exceptional performance and multifunctionality of conductive hydrogels make them one of the most important materials for future wearable technologies. The aim of the presented systematic review is to update the state of knowledge and relate the properties and composition of fluoride gels to their potential application. This article aims to explore the effect of fluoride gel application on changes in the properties of dental biomaterials and tooth tissues. The review includes articles assessing studies on the effects of fluoride gel on dental tissues and materials. Employing the PRISMA protocol, a meticulous search was conducted across the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, utilizing keywords such as fluoride, gel, and properties. The publications were selected without limitation by the year of publication, and then Cohen's κ test was used to assess the agreement of the respondents. Exclusion criteria included non-English studies, opinion pieces, editorial papers, letters to the editor, review articles and meta-analyses, clinical reports, studies lacking full-text accessibility, and duplicates. The quality of the chosen papers was assessed by two independent reviewers. A total of 2385 were located in databases, of which only 17 met the inclusion criteria. All publications showed increased surface mineralization, and seven studies showed the effect of fluoride gel on the surface of dental tissues. Three articles stated a negative effect of fluoride gels on titanium and stainless steel alloys and glass ionomer fillings. Three-dimensional bioprinting is a promising technology for bone tissue engineering. However, most hydrogel bioinks lack the mechanical and post-printing fidelity properties suitable for such hard tissue regeneration. To overcome these weak properties, calcium phosphates can be employed in a bioink to compensate for the lack of certain characteristics. Further, the extracellular matrix of natural bone contains this mineral, resulting in its structural robustness. Thus, calcium phosphates are necessary components of bioink for bone tissue engineering. This review paper examines different recently explored calcium phosphates, as a component of potential bioinks, for the biological, mechanical and structural properties required of 3D bioprinted scaffolds, exploring their distinctive properties that render them favorable biomaterials for bone tissue engineering. The discussion encompasses recent applications and adaptations of 3D-printed scaffolds built with calcium phosphates, delving into the scientific reasons behind the prevalence of certain types of calcium phosphates over others. Additionally, this paper elucidates their interactions with polymer hydrogels for 3D bioprinting applications. Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma accounts for 80% of primary liver cancers, is the most common primary liver malignancy. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the third leading cause of tumor-related deaths worldwide, with a 5-year survival rate of approximately 18%. Chemotherapy, although commonly used for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment, is limited by systemic toxicity and drug resistance. Improving targeted delivery of chemotherapy drugs to tumor cells without causing systemic side effects is a current research focus. Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, possesses good biocompatibility and biodegradability, making it suitable for drug delivery. Enhanced chitosan formulations retain the anti-tumor properties while improving stability. Chitosan-based biomaterials promote hepatocellular carcinoma apoptosis, exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, inhibit tumor angiogenesis, and improve extracellular matrix remodeling for enhanced anti-tumor therapy. Methods: We summarized published experimental papers by querying them. Asphalt binder is the most common material used in road construction. However, the need for more durable and safer pavements requires a better understanding of asphalt's aging mechanisms and how its characteristics can be improved. The current challenge for the road industry is to use renewable materials (i.e., biomaterials not subjected to depletion) as a partial replacement for petroleum-based asphalt, which leads to reducing the carbon footprint. The most promising is to utilize biomaterials following the principles of sustainability in the modification of the asphalt binder. However, to understand whether the application of renewable materials represents a reliable and viable solution or just a research idea, this review covers various techniques for extracting bio-oil and preparing bio-modified asphalt binders, technical aspects including physical properties of different bio-oils, the impact of bio-oil addition on asphalt binder performance, and the compatibility of bio-oils with conventional binders. Key findings indicate that bio-oil can enhance modified asphalt binders' low-temperature performance and aging resistance. However, the effect on high-temperature performance varies based on the bio-oil source and preparation method. The paper concludes that while bio-oils show promise as renewable modifiers for asphalt binders, further research is needed to optimize their use and fully understand their long-term performance implications. Bone defect is one of the urgent problems to be solved in clinics, and it is very important to construct efficient scaffold materials to facilitate bone tissue regeneration. Hydrogels, characterized by their unique three-dimensional network structure, serve as excellent biological scaffold materials. Their internal pores are capable of loading osteogenic drugs to expedite bone formation. The rate and quality of new bone formation are intimately linked with immune regulation and vascular remodeling. The strategic sequential release of drugs to balance inflammation and regulate vascular remodeling is crucial for initiating the osteogenic process. Through the design of hydrogel microstructures, it is possible to achieve sequential drug release and the drug action time can be prolonged, thereby catering to the multi-systemic collaborative regulation needs of osteosynthesis. The drug release rate within the hydrogel is governed by swelling control systems, physical control systems, chemical control systems, and environmental control systems. Utilizing these control systems to design hydrogel materials capable of multi-drug delivery optimizes the construction of the bone microenvironment. Consequently, this facilitates the spatiotemporal controlled released of drugs, promoting bone tissue regeneration. This paper reviews the principles of the controlled release system of various sustained-release hydrogels and the advancements in research on hydrogel multi-drug delivery systems for bone tissue regeneration. The materials used in 3D printing include plastic, metal, and polymers. This review discusses the current state and future prospects of six biomaterials used in veterinary medicine and ophthalmology. Polycaprolactone is suitable for replacing hard tissue defects and is well tolerated in the eye, making it useful for ocular drug delivery devices. Pluronic is used for bone tissue engineering applications and could also be employed for drug delivery in ophthalmology. Silk is used for composite osteogenic scaffolds and vascular grafts, and it may be tested for creating protective lenses for the eye. Collagen is used to produce bioengineered corneas to improve the treatment of corneal ulcers. Alginate is used in cardiac and orthopedic procedures and is also employed in various ocular delivery systems for corneal repair. Hyaluronic acid is commonly used as a lubricant and can serve as a regenerative scaffold during the corneal healing process. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in 3D printing technology within the field of bioengineering. This technology offers the ability to create devices with intricate macro- and micro-geometries, as well as specific models. It has particularly gained attention for its potential in personalized medicine, allowing for the production of organ or tissue models tailored to individual patient needs. Further, 3D printing has opened up possibilities to manufacture structures that can substitute, complement, or enhance damaged or dysfunctional organic parts. To apply 3D printing in the medical field, researchers have studied various materials known as biomaterials, each with distinct chemical and physical characteristics. These materials fall into two main categories: hard and soft materials. Each biomaterial needs to possess specific characteristics that are compatible with biological systems, ensuring long-term stability and biocompatibility. In this paper, we aim to review some of the materials used in the biomedical field, with a particular focus on those utilized in veterinary medicine and ophthalmology. We will discuss the significant findings from recent scientific research, focusing on the biocompatibility, structure, applicability, and in vitro and in vivo biological characteristics of two hard and four soft materials. Simple Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have recently been described in human and veterinary medicine and great interest is directed toward them for their therapeutic potential. EVs are vesicles produced and secreted by Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) that possess the same anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties as the cells themselves but seem safer for clinical applications because of lower immunogenicity and lower size. MSCs that produce EVs can be derived from adult tissues such as bone marrow or adipose tissue or from fetal adnexa such as amniotic membrane and Wharton's jelly. This manuscript gives a summary of the current description of composition, characteristics, sources, and function of EVs, focusing especially on their therapeutic applications in veterinary medicine to date. Knowledge of these features and the steps taken to date will help researchers and veterinary practitioners discover new approaches to regenerative medicine that are ever closer to being achievable. Recently, the therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been extensively studied in both human and veterinary medicine. EVs are nano-sized particles containing biological components commonly found in other biological materials. For that reason, EV isolation and characterization are critical to draw precise conclusions during their investigation. Research on EVs within veterinary medicine is still considered in its early phases, yet numerous papers were published in recent years. The conventional adult tissues for deriving MSCs include adipose tissue and bone marrow. Nonetheless, alternative sources such as synovial fluid, endometrium, gingiva, and milk have also been intermittently used. Fetal adnexa are amniotic membrane/fluid, umbilical cord and Wharton's jelly. Cells derived from fetal adnexa exhibit an intermediate state between embryonic and adult cells, demonstrating higher proliferative and differentiative potential and longer telomeres compared to cells from adult tissues. Summarized here are the principal and recent preclinical and clinical studies performed in domestic animals such as horse, cattle, dog and cat. To minimize the use of antibiotics and address the serious issue of antibiotic resistance as a public health concern, they will undoubtedly also be utilized in the future to treat infections in domestic animals. Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) stands as the foremost contributor to low back pain (LBP), imposing a substantial weight on the world economy. Traditional treatment modalities encompass both conservative approaches and surgical interventions; however, the former falls short in halting IVDD progression, while the latter carries inherent risks. Hence, the quest for an efficacious method to reverse IVDD onset is paramount. Biomaterial delivery systems, exemplified by hydrogels, microspheres, and microneedles, renowned for their exceptional biocompatibility, biodegradability, biological efficacy, and mechanical attributes, have found widespread application in bone, cartilage, and various tissue engineering endeavors. Consequently, IVD tissue engineering has emerged as a burgeoning field of interest. This paper succinctly introduces the intervertebral disc (IVD) structure and the pathophysiology of IVDD, meticulously classifies biomaterials for IVD repair, and reviews recent advances in the field. In this paper, we argue that animal geography should extend its limits and analyses to the fragmented ‘byproducts’ and ‘bits of life’ that are made from animals. In so doing, we argue that a ‘byproductive lens’ is vital to an animal geography in the face of multiple and overlapping ecological crises. The paper opens by theorising byproductive animals and bits of life as increasingly important in the context of emerging biotechnologies. Drawing on our work with shrimp and chickens, we look at how animal byproducts (shells and eggs, respectively) are being put to work, remediated and rendered for pharmaceuticals, biomaterials and other novel industrial purposes. In doing so, we explore the limits of animal geographies through a byproductive lens, to argue that these animal derivatives are bits of life embroiled in bioeconomies, biocapital and biopolitics. We conclude by arguing that byproductive animal geographies offer generative insights for scholars interested in expanding the remit of animal geography’s engagements with scale and ethics, and for scholars engaging with animals across the social sciences. Background: Excessive inflammation is a major cause of implant failure. The surface morphology, hydrophilicity, and loading of biomaterials are major properties modulating anti-inflammatory macrophage activation. This paper investigates the regulatory effects of modifying the surface of Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs) with graphene oxide (GO) on the polarization of mouse monocyte macrophages (RAW264.7). Methods: TNT was produced by the anodic oxidation of titanium. GO was subsequently electrodeposited on the TNT to obtain a TNT–GO composite. The samples were characterised through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. RAW264.7 cells were separately seeded onto the surface of three groups of samples: pure Ti, TNT, and TNT–GO. Under the condition of lipopolysaccharide stimulation, the influence of the sample surfaces on the gene expression profiles was investigated through RNA sequence analysis. In addition, cell spreading was observed through SEM, cell adhesion and proliferation were analysed using the CCK8 assay, and the expression of inflammation-related factors was investigated by ELISA and cellular immunofluorescence staining. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the RAW264.7 cells on the surface of the three groups was detected via immunofluorescence staining. Results: The CCK8 results indicated that the adhesion and proliferation of the RAW264.7 cells were reduced on the TNT and TNT–GO surfaces. ELISA results revealed significant differences in the pro-inflammatory factors tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 secretion among the three groups at 24 h (p < 0.05). The secretion of pro-inflammatory factors significantly reduced and the expression of anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 increased on the TNT and TNT–GO surfaces. The RNA sequencing, ELISA, and cell immunofluorescence staining test results suggested that the inflammatory response of M1 polarization was reduced and the M2 polarization of macrophages was induced on the TNT–GO surface, which may be attributed to the reduction in ROS production. Conclusions: Under lipopolysaccharide stimulation, the inflammatory response of the RAW264.7 cells was reduced and the M2 polarization of macrophages was promoted on the TNT–GO surface, which may be caused by the reduced ROS production. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterized by synovial inflammation and inflammatory cellular infiltration. Functional cells in the RA microenvironment (RAM) are composed of activated immune cells and effector cells. Activated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and T cells, can induce RA. Effector cells, including synoviocytes, osteoclasts, and chondrocytes, receiving inflammatory stimuli, exacerbate RA. These functional cells, often associated with the upregulation of surface-specific receptor proteins and significant homing effects, can secrete pro-inflammatory factors and interfere with each other, thereby jointly promoting the progression of RA. Recently, some nanomedicines have alleviated RA by targeting and modulating functional cells with ligand modifications, while other nanoparticles whose surfaces are camouflaged by membranes or extracellular vesicles (EVs) of these functional cells target and attack the lesion site for RA treatment. When ligand-modified nanomaterials target specific functional cells to treat RA, the functional cells are subjected to attack, much like the intended targets. When functional cell membranes or EVs are modified onto nanomaterials to deliver drugs for RA treatment, functional cells become the attackers, similar to arrows. This study summarized how diversified functional cells serve as targets or arrows by engineered nanoparticles to treat RA. Moreover, the key challenges in preparing nanomaterials and their stability, long-term efficacy, safety, and future clinical patient compliance have been discussed here. This paper presents the results of research on polyurethane viscoelastic foams (PUVFs) modified with biomaterials. This investigation looked at the effect of the biomaterials on the foaming processes, as well as the acoustical and selected physical-mechanical properties of the foams. Various types of rapeseed oil biopolyols and microcellulose were used to modify the materials. The analysis of properties covered a reference biopolyol-free sample and materials containing 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 30 wt.% of different types of biopolyols in the mixture of polyol components. The biopolyols differed in terms of functionality and hydroxyl value (OHv). Next, a selected formulation was modified with various microcellulose biofillers in the amount of 0.5–2 wt.%. The PUVFs, with apparent densities of more than 210 kg/m3 and open-cell structures (more than 85% of open cells), showed a slow recovery to their original shape after deformation when the pressure force was removed. They were also characterized by a tensile strength in the range of 156–264 kPa, elongation at break of 310–510%, hardness of 8.1–23.1 kPa, and a high comfort factor of 3.1–7.1. The introduction of biopolyols into the polyurethane system resulted in changes in sound intensity levels of up to 31.45%, while the addition of fillers resulted in changes in sound intensity levels of up to 13.81%. This paper reports on the coating of heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes on Ti substrates by anodizing at high voltages to design surfaces for biomedical implants. As the anodized voltage from 50 V to 350 V was applied, the microstructure of the coating shifted from regular TiO2 nanotubes to heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes. In addition, the dimension of the heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes was a function of voltage. The electrochemical characteristics of TiO2 nanotubes and heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes were evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. The creation of heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes on Ti substrates resulted in a significant increase in BHK cell attachment compared to that of the Ti substrates and the TiO2 nanotubes. This review explores the extensive applications of plants in areas of biomimetics and bioinspiration, highlighting their role in developing sustainable solutions across various fields such as medicine, materials science, and environmental technology. Plants not only serve essential ecological functions but also provide a rich source of inspiration for innovations in green nanotechnology, biomedicine, and architecture. In the past decade, the focus has shifted towards utilizing plant-based and vegetal waste materials in creating eco-friendly and cost-effective materials with remarkable properties. These materials are employed in making advancements in drug delivery, environmental remediation, and the production of renewable energy. Specifically, the review discusses the use of (nano)bionic plants capable of detecting explosives and environmental contaminants, underscoring their potential in improving quality of life and even in lifesaving applications. The work also refers to the architectural inspirations drawn from the plant world to develop novel design concepts that are both functional and aesthetic. It elaborates on how engineered plants and vegetal waste have been transformed into value-added materials through innovative applications, especially highlighting their roles in wastewater treatment and as electronic components. Moreover, the integration of plants in the synthesis of biocompatible materials for medical applications such as tissue engineering scaffolds and artificial muscles demonstrates their versatility and capacity to replace more traditional synthetic materials, aligning with global sustainability goals. Biosensors (biological sensors) are a promising alternative to standard analytical techniques for testing and monitoring in the environment, among others, heavy metals. Biological materials that detect heavy metals include enzymes, bacteria, fungi, and plant and animal cells. The paper aimed to evaluate the possibilities of biosensor usage in environmental analysis, considering an easy and environmentally friendly analysis of individual compounds (e.g., heavy metals) or their mixtures in various samples directly in the environment, as well as continuous monitoring of these compounds. The work considers biosensors' characteristics, classification, and operation principles. Attention is paid to the possibility of using bioluminescent bacteria as biological material in a biosensor. Examples of the study of heavy metals using various biological sensors were given. It also indicates the possibility of using biosensors to determine microplastics by applying specific hormones (estrogens) receptor use and peptides as a solution or incorporating them into living microbial cells. Additionally, support was given to the use of biosensors to monitor plastics' degradation in the water environment using recombinant whole-cell microbial biosensors as detectors for plastic monomers such as acrylic acid monomers. The application of the biosensors highlighted in the paper is to shorten the time of toxicity studies by using new indicators or acceptors. However, several challenges must be overcome, such as cell viability and activity. This paper reports the results of our study on electrochemical polishing of titanium and a Ti-based alloy using non-aqueous electrolyte. It was shown that electropolishing ensured the removal of surface defects, thereby providing surface smoothing and decreasing surface roughness. The research was conducted using samples made of titanium and Ti6Al4V alloy, as well as implant system elements: implant analog, multiunit, and healing screw. Electropolishing was carried out under a constant voltage (10–15 V) with a specified current density. The electrolyte used contained methanol and sulfuric acid. The modified surface was subjected to a thorough analysis regarding its surface morphology, chemical composition, and physicochemical properties. Scanning electron microscope images and profilometer tests of roughness confirmed significantly smoother surfaces after electropolishing. The surface profile analysis of processed samples also yielded satisfactory results, showing less imperfections than before modification. Nasal cartilage diseases and injuries are known as significant challenges in reconstructive medicine, affecting a substantial number of individuals worldwide. In recent years, the advent of three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a promising approach for nasal cartilage reconstruction, offering potential breakthroughs in the field of regenerative medicine. This paper provides an overview of the methods and challenges associated with 3D bioprinting technologies in the procedure of reconstructing nasal cartilage tissue. The process of 3D bioprinting entails generating a digital 3D model using biomedical imaging techniques and computer-aided design to integrate both internal and external scaffold features. Then, bioinks which consist of biomaterials, cell types, and bioactive chemicals, are applied to facilitate the precise layer-by-layer bioprinting of tissue-engineered scaffolds. After undergoing in vitro and in vivo experiments, this process results in the development of the physiologically functional integrity of the tissue. The advantages of 3D bioprinting encompass the ability to customize scaffold design, enabling the precise incorporation of pore shape, size, and porosity, as well as the utilization of patient-specific cells to enhance compatibility. However, various challenges should be considered, including the optimization of biomaterials, ensuring adequate cell viability and differentiation, achieving seamless integration with the host tissue, and navigating regulatory attention. In exploring the challenges of bone repair and regeneration, this review evaluates the potential of bone tissue engineering (BTE) as a viable alternative to traditional methods, such as autografts and allografts. Key developments in biomaterials and scaffold fabrication techniques, such as additive manufacturing and cell and bioactive molecule-laden scaffolds, are discussed, along with the integration of bio-responsive scaffolds, which can respond to physical and chemical stimuli. These advancements collectively aim to mimic the natural microenvironment of bone, thereby enhancing osteogenesis and facilitating the formation of new tissue. Through a comprehensive combination of in vitro and in vivo studies, we scrutinize the biocompatibility, osteoinductivity, and osteoconductivity of these engineered scaffolds, as well as their interactions with critical cellular players in bone healing processes. Findings from scaffold fabrication techniques and bio-responsive scaffolds indicate that incorporating nanostructured materials and bioactive compounds is particularly effective in promoting the recruitment and differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells. The therapeutic potential of these advanced biomaterials in clinical settings is widely recognized and the paper advocates continued research into multi-responsive scaffold systems. This study provides a brief discussion of the major nanopharmaceuticals formulations as well as the impact of nanotechnology on the future of pharmaceuticals. Effective and eco-friendly strategies of biofabrication are also highlighted. Modern approaches to designing pharmaceutical nanoformulations (e.g., 3D printing, Phyto-Nanotechnology, Biomimetics/Bioinspiration, etc.) are outlined. This paper discusses the need to use natural resources for the "green" design of new nanoformulations with therapeutic efficiency. Nanopharmaceuticals research is still in its early stages, and the preparation of nanomaterials must be carefully considered. Therefore, safety and long-term effects of pharmaceutical nanoformulations must not be overlooked. The testing of nanopharmaceuticals represents an essential point in their further applications. Vegetal scaffolds obtained by decellularizing plant leaves represent a valuable, bioinspired model for nanopharmaceutical testing that avoids using animals. Nanoformulations are critical in various fields, especially in pharmacy, medicine, agriculture, and material science, due to their unique properties and advantages over conventional formulations that allows improved solubility, bioavailability, targeted drug delivery, controlled release, and reduced toxicity. Nanopharmaceuticals have transitioned from experimental stages to being a vital component of clinical practice, significantly improving outcomes in medical fields for cancer treatment, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, personalized medicine, and advanced diagnostics. Collagen possesses high biocompatibility with all tissue and cell types in the body, enabling the creation of multifunctional composite materials for medical applications. In biomedical engineering, naturally-sourced collagen is often combined with diverse organic and inorganic bioactive components to eliminate defects and disorders in fields including orthopedics, dermatology, and more. At the same time, medical-related infection issues and the precise treatment needs of patients require collagen composite biomaterials to have antibacterial properties and customized structures. This paper reviews the antibacterial functionalization of collagen composite biomaterials in recent years, including the combination with inorganic or organic antibacterial agents, which is beneficial for preventing and controlling biological contamination in medical applications. Then, the existing problems and future development directions for the architecturalization of collagen composite materials with 3D printing were discussed, providing guidance for personalized customization of multifunctional materials to meet the specific needs of patients in the future. The production of biomedical devices able to appropriately interact with the biological environment is still a great challenge. Synthetic materials are often employed, but they fail to replicate the biological and functional properties of native tissues, leading to a variety of adverse effects. Several commercial products are based on chemically treated xenogeneic tissues: their principal drawback is due to weak mechanical stability and low durability. Recently, decellularization has been proposed to bypass the drawbacks of both synthetic and biological materials. Acellular materials can integrate with host tissues avoiding/mitigating any foreign body response, but they often lack sufficient patency and impermeability. The present paper investigates an innovative approach to the realization of hybrid materials that combine decellularized bovine pericardium with polycarbonate urethanes. These hybrid materials benefit from the superior biocompatibility of the biological tissue and the mechanical properties of the synthetic polymers. They were assessed from physicochemical, structural, mechanical, and biological points of view; their ability to promote cell growth was also investigated. The decellularized pericardium and the polymer appeared to well adhere to each other, and the two sides were distinguishable. The maximum elongation of hybrid materials was mainly affected by the pericardium, which allows for lower elongation than the polymer; this latter, in turn, influenced the maximum strength achieved. The results confirmed the promising features of hybrid materials for the production of vascular grafts able to be repopulated by circulating cells, thus, improving blood compatibility. The improper disposal of plastics is a growing concern due to increasing global environmental problems such as the rise of CO2 emissions, diminishing petroleum sources, and pollution, which necessitates the research and development of biodegradable materials as an alternative to conventional packaging materials. The purpose of this research was to analyse the properties of biodegradable polymer blends of thermoplastic potato starch (TPS) and polylactide, (PLA) without and with the addition of citric acid (CA) as a potential compatibilizer and plasticizer. The prepared blends were subjected to a comprehensive physicochemical characterization, which included: FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), determination of thermal and mechanical properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), water vapour permeability (WVP), as well as biodegradation testing in soil. The obtained results indicate an improvement in adhesion between the TPS and PLA phases due to the addition of citric acid, better homogeneity of the structure, and greater compatibility of the polymer blends, leading to better thermal, mechanical and barrier properties of the studied biodegradable TPS/PLA polymer blends. After conducting the comprehensive research outlined in this paper, it has been determined that the addition of 5 wt.% of citric acid serves as an effective compatibilizer and plasticizer. This supplementation achieves an optimal equilibrium across thermal, mechanical, morphological, and barrier properties, while also promoting material sustainability through biodegradation. In conclusion, it can be stated that the use of thermoplastic starch in TPS/PLA blends accelerates the biodegradation of PLA as a slowly biodegradable polymer. While the addition of citric acid offers significant advantages for TPS/PLA blends, further research is needed to optimize the formulation and processing parameters to achieve the desired balance between mechanical strength, thermal and barrier properties and biodegradability. Biomedical research using human biological material and data is essential for improving human health, but it requires the active participation of many human volunteers in addition to the distribution of data. As a result, it has raised numerous vexing questions related to trust, privacy and consent. Trust is essential in biomedical research as it relates directly to the willingness of participants to continue participating in research. Privacy and the protection of personal information also influence trust. Informed consent has proven to be insufficient as it cannot overcome the informational deficit between primary and unknown future uses of material and data and is therefore not fully informed and invalid. Broad consent is also problematic as it takes full control of samples and data flow from the research participant and inherently requires that a participant must trust that the researcher will use their material or data in a manner that they would find acceptable. This paper attempts to offer some insight into how these related issues can be overcome. It introduces dynamic consent as a consent model in research involving human biological material and its associated data. Dynamic consent is explained, as well as its claims of superiority in instances where future research is possible. It is also shown how dynamic consent contributes to better control of the samples and data by the research participant, and how trust may be improved by using this consent model. Dynamic consent's co-existence with and support of the South African Protection of Personal Information Act of 2013 is also assessed. The limitations of dynamic consent are also discussed.
