Abstract

This paper describes a modeling language that aims to provide a unified framework for representing control systems, namely, physical plants coupled with computer-based control devices. The proposed modeling methodology is based on the cardinal principle of object orientation, which allows describing both control software and physical components using the same basic concepts, particularly those of capsules, ports, and protocols. Furthermore, it is illustrated how the well-known object-oriented specification language unified modeling language can be adopted, provided an adequate formalization of its semantics, to describe structural and behavioral aspects of control systems, related to both logical and physical parts. This paper describes a new Schemebuilder library developed for educational usage. Each component in the library has a simple model based on standard Bond Graph definitions, and Schemebuilder provides a higher level of interaction in which to use these models. Abstract

The article presents an introduction to bond graphs for control engineers. The bond graph method is firmly grounded in the familiar concept of energy and power. They represent power transactions between components. Using generic components and variables makes modeling multidomain systems simpler and allows engineers to analyze complex problems and interactions that might normally be hidden by more traditional approaches to subsystem division and analysis. Bond graphs enable modelers to easily identify potentially troublesome areas of system representations and to quickly determine the form of remedy that will make the model appropriate for the task in hand.

Abstract

The advantages of object-oriented modeling, as modularity and reusability of components, are very important not only for software development but also for modeling manufacturing systems. Recently, a unified object-oriented approach for modeling both the logical and the physical part of a manufacturing machine has been proposed. In this paper, we show the effectiveness of this new modeling framework on an industrial application. The case study consists of the package forming unit of a filling machine for liquid food packaging, developed by Tetra Pak Carton Ambient S.p.A.

Abstract

Recent development in mechatronic system, such as robotics and flexible manipulators, require a systematic, multidisciplinary approach to design. Bond graphs provide a general modelling paradigm that can be used in design of such multi-domain systems. Modelling of flexible dynamic systems has been the subject of active research over the last two decades. Model development is not simple when such systems undergo large translational and/or rotational displacements, and this has led to several modelling approaches. Bond graphs can be used successfully to design such systems. This paper treats slender deformable bodies as a collection of finite-element beams. Model development employs bond graph based on a co-&not ; ; rotational formulation. This approach differs from others in that it uses a velocity formulation, instead of more common positional formulation. The bond graph component model approach enables systemic creation of models of rigid and deformable multibody systems as a tree of component models, the leaves of which are the elementary components that represent the underlying physical processes. This facilitates building complex models of dynamic systems. The mathematical representation of this structure can be formulated as a system of differential&not ; ; -algebraic equations (DAEs) amenable to solution by available techniques. BondSim, an integrated modelling and simulation environment, facilitates this modelling process. A beam finite element model developed as a bond graph component is applied to well known spin-up manoeuvre of a flexible beam, a problem often used to test the validity of flexible-&not ; ; body models. The results show that a model developed using bond graphs is capable of predicting rather subtle geometric stiffening effects. Bond graphs thus provide a sound paradigm for developing mathematical models of such multi-domain multibody systems.

This paper concerned with the diagnosis and identification of parametric fault which may occur in a physical system. The method uses a bond graph system model to generate residual signals for fault diagnosis. Fault identification of system parameters is obtained by the analysis of the bond graph model topology.

Abstract

A new generation of machine tools called Reconfigurable Machine Tools (RMTs) is emerging as a means for industry to be more competitive in a market that experiences frequent changes in demand. New methodologies and tools are necessary for the efficient design of these machine tools. It is the purpose of this paper to present a modular approach for RMT servo axis modeling, which is part of a larger effort to develop an integrated RMT design and control environment. The components of the machine tool are modeled in a modular way, such that the model of any given configuration can be obtained by assembling the corresponding component models together based on the topology of the machine. The component models are built using the bond graph language that enables the straightforward development of the required modular library. These machine tool models can be used for the evaluation, design and control of the RMT servo axes. The approach is demonstrated through examples, and the benefits and drawbacks of this approach are discussed. The results show that the proposed approach is a promising step towards an automated and integrated RMT design environment, and the challenges in order to complete this goal are discussed.
