Objective: The ENT Scotland society (formerly known as the Scottish Otolaryngological Society) has two meetings a year and accepts oral presentations from trainees. This study aimed to identify publication rates from these meetings. Methods: Abstracts of the presentations are published in The Journal of Laryngology and Otology. A structured search on PubMed and Google Scholar was undertaken to identify which presentations from the 2005 to 2014 meetings have been published. Results: Of the 145 abstracts found, 60.7 per cent were presenting clinical research and 44.1 per cent were related to the head and neck subspecialty. Seventy-three abstracts (50.3 per cent) were associated with publication as a peer-reviewed article; otology papers were more likely to be published than those focusing on other subspecialties (64.3 per cent, p = 0.036). No correlation was found between publication and other factors. Conclusion: Presentations at the ENT Scotland meetings undergo unbiased peer review and are as likely to be published as those of other conferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 10th UK National Heat Transfer Conference was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, during 10-11 September 2007 under the auspices of the UK Heat Transfer Committee and was co-organized by the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University. background The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the most challenging health crisis that we are facing today. Against the backdrop of this pandemic, it becomes imperative to study the effects of this infection on pregnancy outcome and its mode of delivery. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 infection on pregnancy as well as the outcome. Materials and methods In this retrospective observational analytical study, a total of 150 pregnant women were included in the study, from 1 September 2020 to 1 May 2021, most of them confirmed that positive COVID-19 by PCR, depending on questionaries' paper distributed to the infected pregnant women at that time in Babylon government. Results We observed that young females (<20 years) had the least chance of infection, rural areas were more vulnerable to infection than urban areas, employed pregnant women had a higher chance of infection than unemployed, and that the majority of women were treated at home. Of those infected patients, those who were infected during their third trimester were more likely to present with complications with their pregnancy (rather than COVID-19), such as IUGR and IUD etc. Regarding the mode of delivery, there is a slightly increased rate of caesarian section (CS) when compared with the typical population, after excluding the obstetric indication for CS, such as complete placenta prevea. Conclusion There is no significant effect of COVID-19 infection on maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancy, despite a slight increase in preterm labor and C/S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mouth may be presented and understood in different ways, be subject to judgement by others and, as we age, may intrude on everyday life due to problems that affect oral health. However, research that considers older people's experiences concerning their mouths and teeth is limited. This paper reports on qualitative research with 43 people in England and Scotland, aged 65–91, exploring the significance of the mouth over the lifecourse. It uses the concept of 'mouth talk' to explore narratives of maintaining, losing and replacing teeth. Participants engaged in 'mouth talk' to downplay the impact of the mouth, demonstrate socially appropriate ageing, and distance themselves from 'real' old age by retaining a moral identity and sense of self. They also found means to challenge dominant discourses of ageing in how they spoke about missing teeth. Referring to Leder's notion of 'dys-appearance' and Gilleard and Higgs' work on the social imaginary of the fourth age, the study illustrates the ways in which 'mouth talk' can contribute to sustaining a sense of self in later life, presenting the ageing mouth, with and without teeth, as an absent presence. It also argues for the importance of listening to stories of the mouth in order to expand understanding of people's approaches to oral health in older age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In April 2014, a conference in Edinburgh honoring Simon Frith upon his academic retirement featured three days of paper sessions, enjoyable activities, and distinguished guests. For the benefit of colleagues who did not attend it, this article offers some description of and purposefully subjective commentary on the conference Studying Music. Particular attention is given to the themes highlighted in the call-for-papers: Frith's position in music scholarship, writing about music, the current relationship among the various disciplines that claim music as a subject of study, and boundaries between different categories of music (high/low, popular/art). Topics of highlighted papers include the socio-semantics of vocal timbre, the etymology of the term "popular music," historiography of celebrities, sociology of race relations, and a plethora of perspectives on music and technology. Studying Music presented several strengths, especially because its paper and panel sessions encompassed researchers from media, music, and sociology departments. The achievements of Simon Frith and popular music scholarship were duly celebrated, extended, and reconsidered in new ways. Yet, a persistent ideological suspicion of art music scholars and musical analysis among popular music scholars who were present troubled me, as a musicologist who researches French art music. Taking this antagonism as a point of departure, this article concludes with a reflection on both positive and negative social and political implications of art music scholarship based on my own experiences in academic life. This paper is a shortened and revised version of the Closing Plenary given to the World Congress of the Association of Social Economics, and Cairncross Lecture, University of Glasgow, June 2012. Mainstream economics is seen as unfit for purpose because of deficiencies that have long been criticised by a marginalised heterodoxy. These include the taking out of the historical and social even if bringing them back in on the basis of a technical apparatus and architecture that is sorely inappropriate. These observations are illustrated in passing reference to social capital but are particularly appropriate for understanding the weakness of ethics within mainstream economics. An alternative is offered through taking various “entanglements” (such as facts and values) as critical point of departure, leading to the suggestion that ethical systems are subject to the 10 Cs—Constructed, Construed, Conforming, Commodified, Contextual, Contradictory, Closed, Contested, Collective and Chaotic. The IRPA13 Congress took place from 14-18 May 2012 in Glasgow, Scotland, UK, and was attended by almost 1500 radiological protection professionals. Purpose -- This paper aims to describe the development and evaluation of a resource for use by practitioners to self-evaluate their policy and practice in relation to the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007. Design/methodology/approach -- The self-evaluation resource was developed in the context of multi-agency adult protection policy and legislation to reflect key quality indicators relevant to stakeholders, the community, practitioners and their agencies. Findings -- The quality indicators were selectively piloted by 15 of the 28 multiagency partners in Scotland. The utility of the resource was demonstrated and in some cases the outcomes led to changes in policy and practice. The effect of resource restrictions was reported to have a bearing on the utility of the resource in some partnerships. Research limitations/implications -- The quality indicators were not equally piloted with participants focusing on evaluation of case outcomes rather than wider structural and agency-wide aspects of adult protection. Practical implications -- The adult protection, self-evaluation resource has been identified as a potential means of enabling multi-agency partnerships to establish the effectiveness of their own policy and practice and offers the potential for cross-Scotland comparisons and bench marking. Social implications -- The resource provides the basis for self-evaluation and improvement in adult support and protection that will make the lives of adults at risk of harm safer . Originality/value -- An innovative approach is described to enable self-evaluation by adult protection practitioners and policy makers to judge the effectiveness of their own performance and ensure improved performance. e-Learning has been frequently heralded as a transforming influence on global education and corporate training. Despite such rhetoric, the adoption, diffusion and exploitation of e-Learning by educational institutions and organizations have been slower than anticipated. In this paper we attempt to examine the future of e-learning by adopting a scenario planning approach, which formed the basis of a recent major international conference held in Edinburgh, Scotland in February 2004. We set out the background of the study, the methodology used to investigate the future(s) of e-learning and reflect on the process and outcomes of the exercise to provide some assistance for practitioners in the field. Our general conclusions are that the scenarios have been a valuable starting point to engage in a more informed discussion of how e-learning may transform education and training markets and the ways in which people learn over the next decade. Introduction: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) improves outcomes for frail patients; at FVRH this is delivered by the Frailty Intervention Team (FIT) comprising of senior nurses, allied health professionals (AHPs) and doctors. Faced with COVID-19, we took the opportunity to digitalise CGA documentation to preserve these benefits for patients whilst facing greater acuity, staffing and time pressures. An electronic solution was adopted to reduce paper-usage in COVID-receiving areas. Prior to COVID-19, CGA was recorded within case-notes, presenting challenges when patients were readmitted out-ofhours as these were stored off-site and not accessible out-of-hours. Method: Trakcare is the patient-management system in many Scottish hospitals. The Electronic Patient Record (EPR) was used to record pro-forma against admissions which were accessible and updatable for any patient 24–7-365. Patients meeting the Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) Frailty criteria were considered “frailty-positive”, with an e-alert added- reappearing on any re-admission. Providing no HIS-exclusion criteria, an electronic-CGA (e-CGA) was recorded or updated. The pro-forma designed contained information not immediately available to clerking practitioners. This evolved following discussion amongst the FIT to include information such as escalation-status, medicationarrangements and baseline cognition. Results: Over 13 weeks, 116 EPRs were reviewed. During weeks 1–3 (n=8, 12, 7 respectively), e-CGA completion averaged 31%. Following FIT collaboration, this rose to 82% (n=9) by week 12. Qualitative feedback from the MDT indicated that FIT, downstream wards and night-staff felt that having access to previous escalation-plans made immediate-management easier to determine, and discussions with familiesmore productive for patients. Conclusions: Development of the FVRH e-CGA is ongoing, with an electronic frailtyscreening tool being implemented to improve frailty-identification on admission to ensure correct streaming of patients to the FIT. We have demonstrated a cost-neutral method for improving access to CGA for patients using existing IT systems whilst protecting staff time, preserving patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective The aim of the case ascertainment for the study was to identify as near complete as possible a population of patients with presenile dementia who had been identified by hospital contact within a defined period of time, and who were currently alive, in the Lothian area. It did not aim to establish epidemiological figures. Design The Lothian Psychiatric Case Register was the main source of case identification. Case notes were inspected and cases identified for the study. Setting Patients were either in long-term care or at home. Patients As described in Paper I. Age range 30–65 years. Measures Various diagnostic codings, including those of the ICD-9 were used to identify cases from the register. Feighner criteria were applied on case note inspection and DSM-III-R criteria after individuals had been seen. Results A potential of 557 cases were identified from the case register, etc. Of these, 431 were excluded and 126 seen for the study. Conclusions The criteria used for inclusion and exclusion of cases in this study are thus directed towards achieving the aims of this study, and the findings would have to be modified to reach an estimate of all cases of early-onset dementia in the Lothian area.
