This study focussed on the development of fully biodegradable composites based on polybutylene succinate (PBS) in combination with raw materials from different processing stages of the pulp and paper industry. Sulfite pulp (SP), kraft pulp (KP) and screened sludge residue (SL) from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) were investigated as reinforcing fibres contributing to a circular economy. We report a comparative study of the physicochemical properties and mechanical performance of PBS composites reinforced with these cellulosic raw fibres and commercial pure microcrystalline cellulose (MC). The composites were characterised in tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, water absorption and wettability. The incorporation of the fibres into the polymer matrix was also investigated using torque rheometry. Critical concentrations were obtained with maximum incorporation in the range of 15–20 wt% for SP/KP and 25–30 wt% for SL. SP and KP composites showed at least as good physicochemical and mechanical properties as MC at the concentrations studied (0–20 wt%). SP-composites showed the highest tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. It was shown that these fibres from the pulp and paper industry can be used as reinforcement for PBS matrices without additional chemical purification and provide a valuable alternative to commercial microcrystalline cellulose. Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) have been proposed to facilitate mechanistic understanding of interactions of chemicals/materials with biological systems. Each AOP starts with a molecular initiating event (MIE) and possibly ends with adverse outcome(s) (AOs) via a series of key events (KEs). So far, the interaction of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) with biomolecules, biomembranes, cells, and biological structures, in general, is not yet fully elucidated. There is also a huge lack of information on which AOPs are ENMs-relevant or -specific, despite numerous published data on toxicological endpoints they trigger, such as oxidative stress and inflammation. We propose to integrate related data and knowledge recently collected. Our approach combines the annotation of nanomaterials and their MIEs with ontology annotation to demonstrate how we can then query AOPs and biological pathway information for these materials. We conclude that a FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) representation of the ENM-MIE knowledge simplifies integration with other knowledge. Most methodologies to measure the moisture‐induced deformation (hygro‐expansion) of paper microconstituents, including fibres and interfibre bonds, are low resolution or time‐consuming. Hence, here, a novel method is proposed and validated to measure high‐resolution full‐field strain maps of paper microconstituents during hygro‐expansion, based on environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). To this end, a novel climate stage enables accurate control of the relative humidity (RH) near the specimen in the ESEM from 0%–100%. The fibre surface, which is decorated a priori with a microparticle pattern, is captured during RH change. Subsequently, correlating the fibre surface using a dedicated global digital image correlation algorithm enables high‐resolution hygro‐expansion strain maps. Method optimisation involved performing contrast enhancement, scan‐correction to reduce ESEM artefacts and a background correction, resulting in a strain resolution of 6·10−4. Method validation revealed that the fibres' crystallinity is affected by the electron beam, even for minimal invasive electron beam settings. Interestingly, however, the fibres consistently exhibit conventional hygro‐expansion behaviour during the drying slopes. Using the optimised procedure, hygro‐expansion characterisation of two interfibre bonds and four interfibre bond cross‐sections revealed the competition between the low longitudinal and large transverse fibre hygro‐expansion in the bonded area. Cellulose is classified as one of the most abundant biopolymers in nature. Its excellent properties have gained a lot of interest as an alternative material for synthetic polymers. Nowadays, cellulose can be processed into numerous derivative products, such as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). MCC and NCC have demonstrated outstanding mechanical properties owing to their high degree of crystallinity. One of the promising applications of MCC and NCC is high-performance paper. It can be utilized as a substitute for the aramid paper that has been commercially used as a honeycomb core material for sandwich-structured composites. In this study, MCC and NCC were prepared by extracting cellulose from the Cladophora algae resource. MCC and NCC possessed different characteristics because of their distinct morphologies. Furthermore, MCC and NCC were formed into a paper at various grammages and then impregnated with epoxy resin. The effect of paper grammage and epoxy resin impregnation on the mechanical properties of both materials was studied. Then, MCC and NCC paper was prepared as a raw material for honeycomb core applications. The results showed that epoxy-impregnated MCC paper outperformed epoxy-impregnated NCC paper with a compression strength of 0.72 MPa. The interesting result from this study is that the compression strength of the MCC-based honeycomb core was comparable to the commercial ones despite being made of a natural resource, which is sustainable and renewable. Several low-density crumpled paper-based materials were fabricated by varying both the volume fraction and the geometry and mechanical properties of paper sheets. Their 3D architecture was investigated using X-ray microtomography. Microstructure descriptors such as the pore size distribution, the mean curvature distribution and the volume fraction of ordered domains were finely analyzed. Their mechanical properties were also assessed using uniaxial compression tests. Our results showed that crumpled materials exhibited a particular porous microstructure with a reproducible mechanical behavior between foams and entangled fibrous materials. Their compressive behavior was characterized by successive elastic, strain-hardening and densification regimes. The effects of the geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties of the sheets on the process-induced microstructures and mechanical performances were discussed. In particular, a simple micromechanical approach was used to estimate analytically and from the 3D images the role of ridges and ordered domains on the mechanical properties of crumpled papers. The evolution of their Young's moduli and yield stresses were studied as a function of their relative densities and compared with experimental data available in the literature for other cellular materials, showing that crumpled papers are promising renewable alternatives to standard polymer foams for several engineering applications, due to the proper combination of mechanical properties, porosity, cost, and easy fabrication. Characterization of neutral sulphite semi-chemical black liquor (NSSCBL), sampled from paper manufacturing process that uses recycled fibers as primary feedstock, was carried out for potential bioenergy and biomaterial applications. Physico-chemical characteristics including inorganic elements content, thermogravimetric analysis, GC/MS, and FT-IR are presented. The black liquor of the recycled fibers in the manufacturing process revealed unique characteristics in terms of chemical composition profile compared to the black liquor originating from regular pulp and paper industries. The major findings include the presence of chemical compounds, from a non-plant origin, such as derivatives of hexanedioic acid in significant quantities. The favorable biofuel characteristics of this black liquor are: neutral pH, a higher volatile content, and HHV. Process-monitoring laboratories in the pulp and paper industry generally use a combination of wet chemical analyses and physical measurements to certify the fitness of a production pulp for a specific end-use. These laboratory tests require time and the effort of trained personnel, limiting their utility for real-time process control. Here we show that Raman probes of unrefined cellulosic pulps, well-suited to the online measurement of in-process materials, can predict the quality attributes of manufactured papers. The accuracy of prediction improves when the covariance is modelled in a reduced measurement space selected by a data-driven, feature-selection technique referred to as a Template Oriented Genetic Algorithm (TOGA). TOGA, combined with discrete wavelet transform (DWT), isolates functional-group features that correlate best with mechanical properties paper derived from refined pulp. Paper makers refine market pulps to build sheet strength using a beating process that decreases freeness as it increases fibre-fibre bonding. Methods demonstrated here predict manufactured sheet properties obtainable after any specified degree of refining from the Raman spectrum of an unrefined pulp. This analysis capacity will enable both vendors of market pulp and makers of sheet paper to specify in advance the amount of beating required to produce a desired product, thereby saving cost and conserving resources. The unique features of cellulosic paper including flexibility, biodegradability, and low cost enables it as a versatile, sustainable biomaterial for promising applications. In the paper industry, microsized mineral particles are widely used in the production of printing/writing paper grades, while rosin derived from trees is the earliest internal sizing agent for paper hydrophobication. On the basis of existing commercial practices associated with the use of mineral particles and rosin in paper production, we present a process concept of converting cellulosic fibers (paper-grade pulp) into “sticky” superhydrophobic paper involving the use of microsized mineral particles and rosin (a tree-derived natural product, mainly a mixture of resin acids, especially abietic acid with chemical formula of C 19 H 29 COOH). Internal filling of cellulosic networks with mineral particles was basically used to hold out the mineral particles added at the surface, and the delicate integration of wet-end/surface applications of mineral particles with paper surface engineering with rosin/alum led to the development of “sticky” superhydrophobicity, i.e., ultrahigh water-repellency and strong adhesion to water. This proposed concept may provide valuable implications for expanding the use of paper-based products to unconventional applications, e.g., ultrahigh-performance ink jet printing paper for mitigating the “coffee-ring effect” and paper-based microfluidic devices for biomedical testing. Here we describe the development of a humidity-responsive sheet of paper that is derived solely from natural pollen. Adaptive soft material components of the paper exhibit diverse and well-integrated responses to humidity that promote shape reconfiguration, actuation, and locomotion. This mechanically versatile and nonallergenic paper can generate a cyclically high contractile stress upon water absorption and desorption, and the rapid exchange of water drives locomotion due to hydrodynamic effects. Such dynamic behavior can be finely tuned by adjusting the structure and properties of the paper, including thickness, surface roughness, and processing conditions, analogous to those of classical soapmaking. We demonstrate that humidity-responsive paper-like actuators can mimic the blooming of the Michelia flower and perform self-propelled motion. Harnessing the material properties of bioinspired systems such as pollen paper opens the door to a wide range of sustainable, eco-friendly, and biocompatible material innovation platforms for applications in sensing, actuation, and locomotion. Biomaterials and new processes (3D printing and flexible hybrid electronics) offer opportunities to break free from a 2D paper world by allowing for the development of smart multi-dimensional structures. While there has been recent progress reported in each of these areas of technology, to date, the merger of these technologies has been very limited. We believe that their merger offers boundless opportunities and an opportunity for the paper industry to innovate a low cost, sustainable housing solution capable of promoting the well-being of its occupants while minimizing the environmental impact of its daily use. Wound healing progresses through three distinct stages: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Immune regulation is a central component throughout, crucial for orchestrating inflammatory responses, facilitating tissue repair, and restraining scar tissue formation. Elements such as mitochondria, reactive oxygen species (ROS), macrophages, autophagy, ferroptosis, and cytokines collaboratively shape immune regulation in this healing process. Skin wound dressings, recognized for their ability to augment biomaterials' immunomodulatory characteristics via antimicrobial, antioxidative, pro- or anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerative capacities, have garnered heightened attention. Notwithstanding, a lack of comprehensive research addressing how these dressings attain immunomodulatory properties and the mechanisms thereof persists. Hence, this paper pioneers a systematic review of biomaterials, emphasizing immune regulation and their underlying immunological mechanisms. It begins by highlighting the importance of immune regulation in wound healing and the peculiarities and obstacles faced in skin injury recovery. This segment explores the impact of wound metabolism, infections, systemic illnesses, and local immobilization on the immune response during healing. Subsequently, the review examines a spectrum of biomaterials utilized in skin wound therapy, including hydrogels, aerogels, electrospun nanofiber membranes, collagen scaffolds, microneedles, sponges, and 3D-printed constructs. It elaborates on the immunomodulatory approaches employed by these materials, focusing on mitochondrial and ROS modulation, autophagic processes, ferroptosis, macrophage modulation, and the influence of cytokines on wound healing. Acknowledging the challenge of antibiotic resistance, the paper also summarizes promising plant-based alternatives for biomaterial integration, including curcumin. In its concluding sections, the review charts recent advancements and prospects in biomaterials that accelerate skin wound healing via immune modulation. This includes exploring mitochondrial transplantation materials, biomaterial morphology optimization, metal ion incorporation, electrostimulation-enabled immune response control, and the benefits of composite materials in immune-regulatory wound dressings. Bone defect is one of the urgent problems to be solved in clinics, and it is very important to construct efficient scaffold materials to facilitate bone tissue regeneration. Hydrogels, characterized by their unique three-dimensional network structure, serve as excellent biological scaffold materials. Their internal pores are capable of loading osteogenic drugs to expedite bone formation. The rate and quality of new bone formation are intimately linked with immune regulation and vascular remodeling. The strategic sequential release of drugs to balance inflammation and regulate vascular remodeling is crucial for initiating the osteogenic process. Through the design of hydrogel microstructures, it is possible to achieve sequential drug release and the drug action time can be prolonged, thereby catering to the multi-systemic collaborative regulation needs of osteosynthesis. The drug release rate within the hydrogel is governed by swelling control systems, physical control systems, chemical control systems, and environmental control systems. Utilizing these control systems to design hydrogel materials capable of multi-drug delivery optimizes the construction of the bone microenvironment. Consequently, this facilitates the spatiotemporal controlled released of drugs, promoting bone tissue regeneration. This paper reviews the principles of the controlled release system of various sustained-release hydrogels and the advancements in research on hydrogel multi-drug delivery systems for bone tissue regeneration. In this paper, we argue that animal geography should extend its limits and analyses to the fragmented ‘byproducts’ and ‘bits of life’ that are made from animals. In so doing, we argue that a ‘byproductive lens’ is vital to an animal geography in the face of multiple and overlapping ecological crises. The paper opens by theorising byproductive animals and bits of life as increasingly important in the context of emerging biotechnologies. Drawing on our work with shrimp and chickens, we look at how animal byproducts (shells and eggs, respectively) are being put to work, remediated and rendered for pharmaceuticals, biomaterials and other novel industrial purposes. In doing so, we explore the limits of animal geographies through a byproductive lens, to argue that these animal derivatives are bits of life embroiled in bioeconomies, biocapital and biopolitics. We conclude by arguing that byproductive animal geographies offer generative insights for scholars interested in expanding the remit of animal geography’s engagements with scale and ethics, and for scholars engaging with animals across the social sciences. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterized by synovial inflammation and inflammatory cellular infiltration. Functional cells in the RA microenvironment (RAM) are composed of activated immune cells and effector cells. Activated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and T cells, can induce RA. Effector cells, including synoviocytes, osteoclasts, and chondrocytes, receiving inflammatory stimuli, exacerbate RA. These functional cells, often associated with the upregulation of surface-specific receptor proteins and significant homing effects, can secrete pro-inflammatory factors and interfere with each other, thereby jointly promoting the progression of RA. Recently, some nanomedicines have alleviated RA by targeting and modulating functional cells with ligand modifications, while other nanoparticles whose surfaces are camouflaged by membranes or extracellular vesicles (EVs) of these functional cells target and attack the lesion site for RA treatment. When ligand-modified nanomaterials target specific functional cells to treat RA, the functional cells are subjected to attack, much like the intended targets. When functional cell membranes or EVs are modified onto nanomaterials to deliver drugs for RA treatment, functional cells become the attackers, similar to arrows. This study summarized how diversified functional cells serve as targets or arrows by engineered nanoparticles to treat RA. Moreover, the key challenges in preparing nanomaterials and their stability, long-term efficacy, safety, and future clinical patient compliance have been discussed here. Morbidity and mortality from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and heart failure (HF) remain significant in Europe and are increasing worldwide. Patients with IHD or HF might benefit from novel therapeutic strategies, such as cell-based therapies. We recently discussed the therapeutic potential of cell-based therapies and provided recommendations on how to improve the therapeutic translation of these novel strategies for effective cardiac regeneration and repair. Despite major advances in optimizing these strategies with respect to cell source and delivery method, the clinical outcome of cell-based therapy remains unsatisfactory. Major obstacles are the low engraftment and survival rate of transplanted cells in the harmful microenvironment of the host tissue, and the paucity or even lack of endogenous cells with repair capacity. Therefore, new ways of delivering cells and their derivatives are required in order to empower cell-based cardiac repair and regeneration in patients with IHD or HF. Strategies using tissue engineering (TE) combine cells with matrix materials to enhance cell retention or cell delivery in the transplanted area, and have recently received much attention for this purpose. Here, we summarize knowledge on novel approaches emerging from the TE scenario. In particular, we will discuss how combinations of cell/bio-materials (e.g. hydrogels, cell sheets, prefabricated matrices, microspheres, and injectable matrices) combinations might enhance cell retention or cell delivery in the transplantation areas, thereby increase the success rate of cell therapies for IHD and HF. We will not focus on the use of classical engineering approaches, employing fully synthetic materials, because of their unsatisfactory material properties which render them not clinically applicable. The overall aim of this Position Paper from the ESC Working Group Cellular Biology of the Heart is to provide recommendations on how to proceed in research with these novel TE strategies combined with cell-based therapies to boost cardiac repair in the clinical settings of IHD and HF. Abstract: A potentially universal approach is presented for enzyme attachment to cellulose that significantly enhances enzyme stability while retaining high activity, and involves no chemical functionalization of cellulose. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was interlocked in cellulose to form a protein‐friendly surface (named BSA‐Paper), while also providing COOH and NH2 groups for subsequent attachment of enzymes. The desired enzyme is then mixed with additional BSA and interlocked on BSA‐Paper. The second BSA layer dilutes and crosslinks the enzyme for improved stability. Laccase was tested as a model enzyme for interlocking on BSA‐Paper, and was found to retain over 100 % activity and was 240 times more stable at 25 °C (half life=180 d) than laccase. This new approach was also tested with a few other enzymes with encouraging results, thus providing a potentially universal method for stabilization of enzymes on cellulose with retention of high activities. The aim of the paper was to highlight the importance and relevance of the proactive approach of microscopic laboratory techniques for prevention and control of major silkworm diseases thus contributing to the improvement of silkworm health and to augmentation of the sericulture production. The examinations were carried out by direct microscopy and laboratory diagnostic methods for specific diseases (bacterial, parasitic, mycotic and viral) according to the methodology of the OIE Manual, adapted to the conditions of the Laboratory of Genetics, Breeding and Pathology of Silkworms of S.C.S. Baneasa, Bucharest. Direct microscopical and bacterioscopic examinations were carried out to exclude the risk of the presence of pathogens in future generations selected for the conservation of the genetic background. Samples collected from the 84 breeds under conservation were subjected to direct microscopy and bacterioscopic examinations on two developmental stages of silkworms - egg and larval stage (L3). The results of the laboratory examinations required the elimination of inappropriate biological material from the reproduction, that allowed obtaining disease-free reproductive material of the best quality. In the present research paper, we demonstrated the importance of the proactive approach of microscopic laboratory techniques for prevention and control of major silkworm diseases in order to select breeds, lines and hybrids of silkworms with resistance to diseases owned by S.C.S. A highly flexible and free-standing paper with high antibacterial activity made from silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-decorated ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAPNWs) is reported. The HAPNWs@AgNPs nanocomposites were obtained from a facile one-step solvothermal process and utilized for the construction of highly flexible and free-standing inorganic paper through a simple vacuum-filtration procedure. The structure and properties of the HAPNWs@AgNPs paper were characterized in detail. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) micrographs show that AgNPs are highly dispersed and stabilized in the nanocomposite and exhibit a narrow particle size distribution. The effects of the concentration of silver nitrate, solvothermal temperature and time on the product were systematically investigated. This method is simple, convenient and reproducible. The as-prepared HAPNWs@AgNPs paper shows long-time sustained silver-ion release, high antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and good biocompatibility. Overall, this work provides a novel pathway for the preparation of a new type of highly flexible, free-standing and antibacterial inorganic paper made from silver nanoparticle-decorated hydroxyapatite nanowires for various applications, as a promising functional biomaterial. Nasal cartilage diseases and injuries are known as significant challenges in reconstructive medicine, affecting a substantial number of individuals worldwide. In recent years, the advent of three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a promising approach for nasal cartilage reconstruction, offering potential breakthroughs in the field of regenerative medicine. This paper provides an overview of the methods and challenges associated with 3D bioprinting technologies in the procedure of reconstructing nasal cartilage tissue. The process of 3D bioprinting entails generating a digital 3D model using biomedical imaging techniques and computer-aided design to integrate both internal and external scaffold features. Then, bioinks which consist of biomaterials, cell types, and bioactive chemicals, are applied to facilitate the precise layer-by-layer bioprinting of tissue-engineered scaffolds. After undergoing in vitro and in vivo experiments, this process results in the development of the physiologically functional integrity of the tissue. The advantages of 3D bioprinting encompass the ability to customize scaffold design, enabling the precise incorporation of pore shape, size, and porosity, as well as the utilization of patient-specific cells to enhance compatibility. However, various challenges should be considered, including the optimization of biomaterials, ensuring adequate cell viability and differentiation, achieving seamless integration with the host tissue, and navigating regulatory attention. Although numerous studies have demonstrated the potential of 3D bioprinting in the rebuilding of such soft tissues, this paper covers various aspects of the bioprinted tissues to provide insights for the future development of repair techniques appropriate for clinical use. Using environmentally friendly biomaterials in different aspects of human life has been considered extensively. In this respect, different biomaterials have been identified and different applications have been found for them. Currently, chitosan, the well-known derivative of the second most abundant polysaccharide in the nature (i.e., chitin), has been receiving a lot of attention. Using an innovative, tissue-independent approach to decellularized tissue processing and biomaterial fabrication, the development of a series of 'tissue papers' derived from native porcine tissues/organs (heart, kidney, liver, muscle), native bovine tissue/organ (ovary and uterus), and purified bovine Achilles tendon collagen as a control from decellularized extracellular matrix particle ink suspensions cast into molds is described. Each tissue paper type has distinct microstructural characteristics as well as physical and mechanical properties, is capable of absorbing up to 300% of its own weight in liquid, and remains mechanically robust ( E = 1-18 MPa) when hydrated; permitting it to be cut, rolled, folded, and sutured, as needed. In vitro characterization with human mesenchymal stem cells reveals that all tissue paper types support cell adhesion, viability, and proliferation over four weeks. Ovarian tissue papers support mouse ovarian follicle adhesion, viability, and health in vitro, as well as support, and maintain the viability and hormonal function of nonhuman primate and human follicle-containing, live ovarian cortical tissues ex vivo for eight weeks postmortem. 'Tissue papers' can be further augmented with additional synthetic and natural biomaterials, as well as integrated with recently developed, advanced 3D-printable biomaterials, providing a versatile platform for future multi-biomaterial construct manufacturing. Safety (“biocompatibility”) assessment of medical devices has evolved along a different path than that of drugs, being historically governed more by the considerations and needs of engineers rather than chemists and biologists. As a result, the involvement of veterinary pathologists has been much more limited—almost entirely to evaluating tissue responses in tissues in direct contact with implanted devices. As devices have become more complex in composition, structure, placement, and use, concerns as to adverse systemic responses in patients have called for more comprehensive and thoughtful evaluations of effects throughout the body. Further complexities arise from the increasing marriage of devices and drug/biologic therapeutics to achieve either better dose control and, specifically, in delivery to target organs/tissues or better tolerance of the body to medical devices (i.e., minimization of the foreign body response). The challenge to pathologists is to integrate in new technologies (such as in vivo imaging and immunology) and ways of viewing interactions with patient bodies. To fail to do so will allow the methods and standards for medical device safety evaluation to be based on chemical analysis and then the limited details inherent in literature-based risk assessments. A biomimetic device for the reduction of Cu(ii) to Cu(i) consisting of thioglycolic acid covalently grafted to cellulose paper was developed. The device displays exceptionally fast reducing properties allowing the reduction of Cu(ii) in seconds and the formation of deeply colored Cu(i)–SCH2R complexes onto the cellulose paper. There is a growing interest in using paper as a biomaterial scaffold for cell-based applications. In this study, we made the first attempt to fabricate a paper-based array for the culture, proliferation, and direct differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) into functional beating cardiac tissues and create “a beating heart on paper.” This array was simply constructed by binding a cured multi-well polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold with common, commercially available paper substrates. Three types of paper material (print paper, chromatography paper and nitrocellulose membrane) were tested for adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of human-derived iPSCs. We found that hiPSCs grew well on these paper substrates, presenting a three-dimensional (3D)-like morphology with a pluripotent property. The direct differentiation of human iPSCs into functional cardiac tissues on paper was also achieved using our modified differentiation approach. The cardiac tissue retained its functional activities on the coated print paper and chromatography paper with a beating frequency of 40–70 beats per min for up to three months. Interestingly, human iPSCs could be differentiated into retinal pigment epithelium on nitrocellulose membrane under the conditions of cardiac-specific induction, indicating the potential roles of material properties and mechanical cues that are involved in regulating stem cell differentiation. Taken together, these results suggest that different grades of paper could offer great opportunities as bioactive, low-cost, and 3D in vitro platforms for stem cell-based high-throughput drug testing at the tissue/organ level and for tissue engineering applications. Highly porous cellulose beads of controllable sizes were successfully prepared from regenerated cellulose of printed paper wastes based on a facile dissolution and controlled precipitation approach. Pure and dispersed cellulose fibers were isolated from finely ground paper wastes by undergoing initial pretreatment and maceration processes in sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH, 12 wt%). Dispersed cellulose fibers were subsequently dissolved in an ionic liquid (1-allyl-3-methylimidozoium chloride, AMIMCl) to form a homogenous cellulose solution. Highly porous cellulose beads of controllable sizes within the range of 0.4–2.2 mm in diameter were prepared by precipitation in a coagulation bath of ultrapure water under controlled conditions. Cellulose beads of various mean sizes exhibited substantially different specific surface area which ranged between 107 m 2 /g and 498 m 2 /g. Cephalo is presented as a series of multimodal vision large language models (V‐LLMs) designed for materials science applications, integrating visual and linguistic data for enhanced understanding. A key innovation of Cephalo is its advanced dataset generation method. Cephalo is trained on integrated image and text data from thousands of scientific papers and science‐focused Wikipedia data demonstrates it can interpret complex visual scenes, generate precise language descriptions, and answer queries about images effectively. The combination of a vision encoder with an autoregressive transformer supports multimodal natural language understanding, which can be coupled with other generative methods to create an image‐to‐text‐to‐3D pipeline. To develop more capable models from smaller ones, both mixture‐of‐expert methods and model merging are reported. The models are examined in diverse use cases that incorporate biological materials, fracture and engineering analysis, protein biophysics, and bio‐inspired design based on insect behavior. Generative applications include bio‐inspired designs, including pollen‐inspired architected materials, as well as the synthesis of bio‐inspired material microstructures from a photograph of a solar eclipse. Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) stands as the foremost contributor to low back pain (LBP), imposing a substantial weight on the world economy. Traditional treatment modalities encompass both conservative approaches and surgical interventions; however, the former falls short in halting IVDD progression, while the latter carries inherent risks. Hence, the quest for an efficacious method to reverse IVDD onset is paramount. Biomaterial delivery systems, exemplified by hydrogels, microspheres, and microneedles, renowned for their exceptional biocompatibility, biodegradability, biological efficacy, and mechanical attributes, have found widespread application in bone, cartilage, and various tissue engineering endeavors. Simple Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have recently been described in human and veterinary medicine and great interest is directed toward them for their therapeutic potential. To minimize the use of antibiotics and address the serious issue of antibiotic resistance as a public health concern, they will undoubtedly also be utilized in the future to treat infections in domestic animals. Engineered biomaterials are materials specifically designed to interact with biological systems for biomedical applications. We surveyed 834 studies in the ClinicalTrials.gov database and explored biomaterial types, their initiation points, and durations in clinical trials. Trials, focusing on ophthalmology, dentistry, and vascular medicine, are primarily conducted in the United States, Canada, and Italy. AbstractChirality represents a fundamental attribute within living systems and is a pervasive phenomenon in the natural world. The identification and analysis of chiral materials within natural environments and biological systems hold paramount importance in clinical, chemical, and biological sciences. Within chiral analysis, there is a burgeoning focus on developing chiral sensors exhibiting exceptional selectivity, sensitivity, and stability, marking it as a forefront area of research. In the past decade (2013–2023), approximately 1990 papers concerning the application of various chiral materials in chiral sensors have been published. Biological materials and nanomaterials have important applications in the development of chiral sensors, which accounting for 26.67% and 45.24% of the material-related applications in these sensors, respectively; moreover, the development of chiral nanomaterials is closely related to the development of portable and stable chiral sensors. Natural chiral materials, utilized as selective recognition units, are combined with carriers characterized by good physical and chemical properties through functionalization to form various functional chiral materials, which improve the recognition efficiency of chiral sensors. In this article, from the perspective of biological materials, polymer materials, nanomaterials, and other functional chiral materials, the applications of chiral sensors are summarized and the research prospects of chiral sensors are discussed. This paper presents the results of research on polyurethane viscoelastic foams (PUVFs) modified with biomaterials. This investigation looked at the effect of the biomaterials on the foaming processes, as well as the acoustical and selected physical-mechanical properties of the foams. Various types of rapeseed oil biopolyols and microcellulose were used to modify the materials. The analysis of properties covered a reference biopolyol-free sample and materials containing 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 30 wt.% of different types of biopolyols in the mixture of polyol components. The biopolyols differed in terms of functionality and hydroxyl value (OHv). Next, a selected formulation was modified with various microcellulose biofillers in the amount of 0.5–2 wt.%. The PUVFs, with apparent densities of more than 210 kg/m3 and open-cell structures (more than 85% of open cells), showed a slow recovery to their original shape after deformation when the pressure force was removed. They were also characterized by a tensile strength in the range of 156–264 kPa, elongation at break of 310–510%, hardness of 8.1–23.1 kPa, and a high comfort factor of 3.1–7.1. The introduction of biopolyols into the polyurethane system resulted in changes in sound intensity levels of up to 31.45%, while the addition of fillers resulted in changes in sound intensity levels of up to 13.81%. This paper reports on the coating of heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes on Ti substrates by anodizing at high voltages to design surfaces for biomedical implants. As the anodized voltage from 50 V to 350 V was applied, the microstructure of the coating shifted from regular TiO2 nanotubes to heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes. In addition, the dimension of the heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes was a function of voltage. The electrochemical characteristics of TiO2 nanotubes and heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes were evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. The creation of heterostructured TiO2 nanopores/nanotubes on Ti substrates resulted in a significant increase in BHK cell attachment compared to that of the Ti substrates and the TiO2 nanotubes. Metrology is the science of measurement and its applications, whereas biometrology is the science of biological measurement and its applications. Biometrology aims to achieve accuracy and consistency of biological measurements by focusing on the development of metrological traceability, biological reference measurement procedures, and reference materials. Irreproducibility of biological and multi-omics research results from different laboratories, platforms, and analysis methods is hampering the translation of research into clinical uses and can often be attributed to the lack of biologists' attention to the general principles of metrology. In this paper, the progresses of biometrology including metrology on nucleic acid, protein, and cell measurements and its impacts on the improvement of reliability and comparability in biological research are reviewed. Challenges in obtaining more reliable biological and multi-omics measurements due to the lack of primary reference measurement procedures and new standards for biological reference materials faced by biometrology are discussed. In the future, in addition to establishing reliable reference measurement procedures, developing reference materials from single or multiple parameters to multi-omics scale should be emphasized. Three-dimensional bioprinting is a promising technology for bone tissue engineering. However, most hydrogel bioinks lack the mechanical and post-printing fidelity properties suitable for such hard tissue regeneration. To overcome these weak properties, calcium phosphates can be employed in a bioink to compensate for the lack of certain characteristics. Further, the extracellular matrix of natural bone contains this mineral, resulting in its structural robustness. Thus, calcium phosphates are necessary components of bioink for bone tissue engineering. This review paper examines different recently explored calcium phosphates, as a component of potential bioinks, for the biological, mechanical and structural properties required of 3D bioprinted scaffolds, exploring their distinctive properties that render them favorable biomaterials for bone tissue engineering. The discussion encompasses recent applications and adaptations of 3D-printed scaffolds built with calcium phosphates, delving into the scientific reasons behind the prevalence of certain types of calcium phosphates over others. Additionally, this paper elucidates their interactions with polymer hydrogels for 3D bioprinting applications. The paper presents the influence of the use of supplementary feedings on the development of bee colonies and venom production. We evaluated the venom production during harvests of rapeseed, acacia and sunflower. The research was carried out in the apiary of the Faculty of Bioengineering of Animal Resources within the ULST. The biological material was represented by 40 colonies of bees (Apis mellifera carpatica), divided into 8 experimental groups, each group consisting of 5 colonies with equal strength and a queen of the same age. During the spring, bee colonies were fed sugar syrup into which we introduced probiotic products and/or essential oils. Counting of brood cells was performed at 7, 14 and 21 days during supplementary feeding. At the end of the additional feeding period, as well as during rapeseed, acacia and sunflower harvests, venom was collected using the BeeWhisper v.5.1 venom collector, model 2016. Regarding venom production, the best results were observed in the case of additional feedings with the products used. Batches using Colobiotic (2.2 g venom), Oregano essential oil (2.1 g venom) and Lacium (2.1 g venom) had the highest amounts of venom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extracellular vesicles are nanoscale vesicles that can be secreted by all cell types, are intracellular in origin and have the same composition as their parent cells, play a key role in intercellular communication in organismal health and disease, and are now often used as biomarkers of disease and therapeutic agents in biomedical research. When injected locally or systemically, they have the ability to provide a variety of therapeutic effects, for example, regeneration of skin damage or restoration of cardiac function. However, direct injection of extracellular vesicles may result in their rapid clearance from the injection site.In order to maintain the biological activity of extracellular vesicles and to control the release of effective concentrations for better therapeutic efficacy during long-term disease treatment, the design of an optimized drug delivery system is necessary and different systems for the continuous delivery of extracellular vesicles have been developed. This paper first provides an overview of the biogenesis, composition and physiological function of extracellular vesicles, followed by a review of different strategies for extracellular vesicle isolation and methods for engineering extracellular vesicles. In addition, this paper reviews the latest extracellular vesicle delivery platforms such as micro-nanoparticles, injectable hydrogels, microneedles and scaffold patches. At the same time, the research progress and key cases of extracellular vesicle delivery systems in the field of biomedical therapeutics are described. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an emerging biological material with unique properties and structure, which has attracted more and more attention. In this study, Gluconacetobacter xylinus was used to convert sweet potato residues (SPR) hydrolysate to BC. SPR was directly used without pretreatment, and almost no inhibitors were generated, which was beneficial to subsequent glucan conversion and SPR-BC synthesis. SPR-BC production was 11.35 g/L under the optimized condition. The comprehensive structural characterization and mechanical analysis demonstrated that the crystallinity, maximum thermal degradation temperature, and tensile strength of SPR-BC were 87.39%, 263 °C, and 6.87 MPa, respectively, which were superior to those of BC produced with the synthetic medium. SPR-BC was added to rice straw pulp to enhance the bonding force between fibers and the indices of tensile, burst, and tear of rice straw paper. The indices were increased by 83.18%, 301.27%, and 169.58%, respectively. This research not only expanded the carbon source of BC synthesis, reduced BC production cost, but also improved the quality of rice straw paper. Rapid, precise, and reproducible deposition of a broad variety of functional materials, including analytical assay reagents and biomolecules, has made inkjet printing an effective tool for the fabrication of microanalytical devices. A ubiquitous office device as simple as a standard desktop printer with its multiple ink cartridges can be used for this purpose. This Review discusses the combination of inkjet printing technology with paper as a printing substrate for the fabrication of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), which have developed into a fast-growing new field in analytical chemistry. After introducing the fundamentals of μPADs and inkjet printing, it touches on topics such as the microfluidic patterning of paper, tailored arrangement of materials, and functionalities achievable exclusively by the inkjet deposition of analytical assay components, before concluding with an outlook on future perspectives. Purpose: The main objective of this paper is to illustrate an analytical view of different methods of 3D bioprinting, variations, formulations and characteristics of biomaterials. This review also aims to discover all the areas of applications and scopes of further improvement of 3D bioprinters in this era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Design/methodology/approach: This paper reviewed a number of papers that carried evaluations of different 3D bioprinting methods with different biomaterials, using different pumps to print 3D scaffolds, living cells, tissue and organs. All the papers and articles are collected from different journals and conference papers from 2014 to 2022. Findings: This paper briefly explains how the concept of a 3D bioprinter was developed from a 3D printer and how it affects the biomedical field and helps to recover the lack of organ donors. It also gives a clear explanation of three basic processes and different strategies of these processes and the criteria of biomaterial selection. This paper gives insights into how 3D bioprinters can be assisted with machine learning to increase their scope of application. Research limitations/implications: The chosen research approach may limit the generalizability of the research findings. As a result, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed hypotheses further. Practical implications: This paper includes implications for developing 3D bioprinters, developing biomaterials and increasing the printability of 3D bioprinters. This paper reports the results of our study on electrochemical polishing of titanium and a Ti-based alloy using non-aqueous electrolyte. It was shown that electropolishing ensured the removal of surface defects, thereby providing surface smoothing and decreasing surface roughness. The research was conducted using samples made of titanium and Ti6Al4V alloy, as well as implant system elements: implant analog, multiunit, and healing screw. Electropolishing was carried out under a constant voltage (10–15 V) with a specified current density. The electrolyte used contained methanol and sulfuric acid. The modified surface was subjected to a thorough analysis regarding its surface morphology, chemical composition, and physicochemical properties. Scanning electron microscope images and profilometer tests of roughness confirmed significantly smoother surfaces after electropolishing. The surface profile analysis of processed samples also yielded satisfactory results, showing less imperfections than before modification. AbstractThis paper is concerned with a rate-type theory of thermoviscoelasticity in which the second gradient of the displacement and the second temperature gradient are added to the classical set of independent constitutive variables. Viscoelasticity and related phenomena are of great importance in the study of biological materials. An adequate modeling of rubber-like materials and of biological soft tissues requires the use of the theory of viscoelasticity. Introduction of the concept of thermal displacement and the theory of multipolar continua allows us to show that Green-Naghdi thermomechanics can be used to derive a second gradient theory. The basic equations of the theory are established and the boundary conditions associated to nonsimple materials are investigated. The stress tensor and hyperstress tensor are shown to depend on the first and second temperature gradients. For rigid heat conductors we find that the temperature satisfies a fourth order equation. The boundary-initial-value problems are formulated. A uniqueness result in the dynamic theory of thermoviscoelastic materials is presented. We establish an existence result and prove the analyticity of the solutions. As a consequence, the exponential decay of the solutions and their impossibility of localization are obtained. The paper discusses a photoactivation method for determining the activity of the long-lived isotope Ca relative to the activity of Co in irradiated reactor biological shielding concrete. It is proposed to use photonuclear reactions on cobalt and calcium isotopes: Co( , ) Co, Ca( , ) K, or Ca( , ) Ca Sc to determine the activity of Ca. The sensitivity of the proposed method is on the order of Bq/g, provided that semiconductor spectrometers with an ultrapure germanium detector are used. In exploring the challenges of bone repair and regeneration, this review evaluates the potential of bone tissue engineering (BTE) as a viable alternative to traditional methods, such as autografts and allografts. Key developments in biomaterials and scaffold fabrication techniques, such as additive manufacturing and cell and bioactive molecule-laden scaffolds, are discussed, along with the integration of bio-responsive scaffolds, which can respond to physical and chemical stimuli. These advancements collectively aim to mimic the natural microenvironment of bone, thereby enhancing osteogenesis and facilitating the formation of new tissue. Through a comprehensive combination of in vitro and in vivo studies, we scrutinize the biocompatibility, osteoinductivity, and osteoconductivity of these engineered scaffolds, as well as their interactions with critical cellular players in bone healing processes. Findings from scaffold fabrication techniques and bio-responsive scaffolds indicate that incorporating nanostructured materials and bioactive compounds is particularly effective in promoting the recruitment and differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells. The therapeutic potential of these advanced biomaterials in clinical settings is widely recognized and the paper advocates continued research into multi-responsive scaffold systems. This study provides a brief discussion of the major nanopharmaceuticals formulations as well as the impact of nanotechnology on the future of pharmaceuticals. Effective and eco-friendly strategies of biofabrication are also highlighted. Nanoformulations are critical in various fields, especially in pharmacy, medicine, agriculture, and material science, due to their unique properties and advantages over conventional formulations that allows improved solubility, bioavailability, targeted drug delivery, controlled release, and reduced toxicity. Nanopharmaceuticals have transitioned from experimental stages to being a vital component of clinical practice, significantly improving outcomes in medical fields for cancer treatment, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, personalized medicine, and advanced diagnostics.
