Even if precast pre-stressed hollow-core (PPHC) slabs are usually designed as simply supported elements, continuity with the supporting beam may exist when constructed together with a reinforced concrete topping and continuity reinforcing bars. During an earthquake (and possibly other lateral load), this continuity may result in bending moments being induced close to the supports as the buildings sway laterally. The response of precast floors to earthquake-induced demands has been addressed by past research. However, further investigation is required to improve understanding of several aspects of precast floor behaviour either revealed or emphasized by recent earthquakes in New Zealand. This paper proposes a mechanics-based modelling approach for the analysis of PPHC slab-to-beam seating connections. The model has been calibrated against existing test data to predict the failure of a PPHC slab under negative bending moments. The numerical outcomes allow comparison of the moment–drift response, principal tensile stresses, and crack progression during loading. The developed modelling approach will allow future studies to exhaustively investigate all aspects of precast floor behaviour by varying the properties and geometry of the PPHC seating connection. This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations into the web crippling behaviour and load-carrying capacity of stainless steel built-up I-section members under End-Two-Flange (ETF) concentrated transverse loading. An experimental programme was conducted on 23 austenitic and duplex stainless steel built-up I-section specimens, with each consisting of two identical press-braked channel sections assembled back-to-back by means of self-tapping screws. Following the experimental programme, a numerical modelling programme was performed, where finite element models were firstly developed to replicate the tests and then used to conduct parametric studies. Based on the test and numerical data, the existing design rules for stainless steel built-up I-section members failing by web crippling, as set out in the current European, American and Australian/New Zealand design standards, were assessed. The comparisons indicated that the European and Australian/New Zealand design standards resulted in overly conservative and rather scattered failure load predictions, while the American design standard led to less scattered failure load predictions, but with many predictions on the unsafe side. This paper reports experimental and numerical investigations into the structural behaviour and resistances of high strength concrete-filled stainless steel tube (HCFSST) beam-columns under combined compression and bending. An experimental investigation was conducted on sixteen HCFSST beam-columns specimens fabricated from stainless steel tubes with two cross-section sizes and high strength concretes with four material grades, and included concrete cylinder tests, tensile coupon tests, initial global geometric imperfection measurements and eccentric compression tests. The test setups and procedures were fully reported and the experimental observations were discussed and analysed in detail. It was found that the plane cross-section assumption was valid for eccentrically loaded HCFSST sections and the lateral deflection distribution patterns for HCFSST beam-columns were approximately half-sine wave shapes. The test results were used in a subsequent numerical investigation for the validation of finite element models, which were then employed to conduct parametric studies to generate additional numerical data over a wide range of cross-section dimensions, member lengths and loading combinations. Based on the experimental and numerical results, the relevant design rules, as set out in the European code, American specification and Australian/New Zealand standard, were evaluated for their applicability to HCFSST beam-columns. The flexural buckling behaviour and resistances of press-braked stainless steel Z-section columns are investigated in this paper, based on experiments and numerical modelling. An experimental investigation was conducted on two press-braked stainless steel Z-sections and included material testing, initial geometric imperfection measurements and twelve fixed-ended column tests. Minor-axis flexural buckling was observed for all press-braked stainless steel Z-section column specimens upon testing. The key obtained fixed-ended column test results, including failure loads, load–deformation histories and failure modes, were fully reported. This paper reports laboratory testing and numerical modelling on the cross-sectional behaviour and resistances of press-braked S690 high strength steel slender channel section stub columns under combined compression and minor-axis bending. A testing programme, including initial geometric imperfection measurements and ten minor-axis eccentric compression tests, was firstly conducted. This was accompanied by a numerical modelling programme, including a validation study, where finite element models were developed and validated against test results, and a series of parametric studies, where the validated finite element models were used to generate further numerical data. The obtained test and numerical data were then adopted to evaluate the current codified design interaction curves for press-braked S690 high strength steel slender channel section stub columns under combined compression and minor-axis bending, as provided in the European code, North American specification and Australian/New Zealand standard. The evaluation results revealed that the codified design interaction curves led to conservative and scattered resistance predictions, mainly due to the conservative end points (i.e. the cross-section compression and bending resistances). This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of eccentrically loaded circular recycled aggregate concrete-filled stainless steel tube (RACFSST) stub columns. The testing programme was conducted on twelve specimens designed with different stainless steel tube section sizes and recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratios, and included tensile coupon tests, concrete cylinder tests and eccentric compression tests. The test results, including the failure loads and modes, load–mid-height lateral deflection curves and evolution of neutral axis, were reported and discussed. The conservatism of the codified design interaction curves stems from the conservative end points (i.e. cross-section resistances under pure compression and pure bending), which are determined without considering the effect of material strain hardening, and the inefficient linear shape, which ignores the effect of stress redistribution. Improved design interaction curves were proposed through the adoption of (i) more accurate end points, which are calculated with a rational exploitation of material strain hardening by continuous strength method and (ii) more efficient nonlinear shape, which allows for the stress redistribution. The proposed design interaction curves were shown to result in substantially more accurate resistance predictions for press-braked stainless steel channel sections under major-axis combined loading than their codified counterparts. In the last 22 years, four large (between approximately 1000 and 5000 m3) flowslides in anthropogenic fill materials have occurred in residential areas of the greater Wellington region, New Zealand. Such failures are relatively rare, given that there are over 1600 mapped fill bodies, formed between the early 1900s and present day within the region. Nonetheless, their performance under strong earthquake shaking has yet to be tested, given no strong ground motions (>0.15 g) have shaken the region since their construction. In this study, we used remote sensing techniques, borehole investigations, geotechnical testing and numerical modelling to investigate two fill bodies that are characteristic of those constructed across the Wellington region. This paper presents the results from the dynamic analysis of these two sites under strong earthquake shaking. The maximum anthropogenic fill thicknesses at both sites ranged between 20 m and 30 m. The fills tested varied from sandy gravel with some silt to clayey gravelly silt sand (D50 from 0.02 mm to 10 mm and D90 from 5 mm to 50 mm). Based on the field mapping, site investigation and laboratory results, two-dimensional geotechnical cross-sections of the sites were generated and used as the basis for the numerical simulations. Accelerograms recorded from eleven local and overseas earthquakes were used as inputs for the modelling. These were selected and scaled to simulate the amplitude and frequency content of the different types of earthquake shaking that could affect the sites up to 2.5 g, which represents a peak ground acceleration with an approximate annual exceedance probability of 0.00005. The results indicate simulated permanent ground displacements, due to sliding of the fill in the range of 0.01 m to >10 m, with the amount of displacement increasing with increasing Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). Although at small displacements it is unlikely the fill slopes would fail catastrophically to form flowslides, the simulated permanent displacements are large enough for an earthquake with a free field PGA of >0.6 g (annual exceedance probability (AEP) of 0.002) to potentially disrupt buried elastic pipe utilities (especially the water pipes). Such deformation could lead to the leakage of water from broken pipes, and an increase in pore-water pressure within the fills, which could in turn lead to the development of post-earthquake flowslides. A numerical modelling programme was then followed; finite element (FE) models were firstly developed to replicate the test responses, and then adopted to perform parametric studies to generate further numerical data over a wide range of cross-section dimensions and member lengths. Given that the current design codes for steel structures, as used in Europe, Australia/New Zealand and North America, are only applicable to members and joints with material grades up to S700 (or S690), the relevant codified design provisions for press-braked S700 (or S690) high strength steel angle section columns were evaluated for their applicability to press-braked S960 UHSS angle section columns, based on the obtained test and numerical data. The evaluation results revealed that the European code yields unduly conservative and scattered compression resistance predictions when applied to press-braked S960 UHSS angle section columns, while the Australian/New Zealand standard and North American specification lead to a higher degree of design accuracy and consistency, on average, when used for press-braked S960 UHSS angle section columns, though some of the compression resistance predictions are unsafe for those failing by flexural buckling in the 'C' orientation. The results of the evaluation revealed that all the codified design rules yield excessively conservative and scattered flexural-torsional buckling resistance predictions for fixed-ended press-braked S690 high strength steel angle section columns, while the DSM-based design approach leads to substantially improved resistance predictions, owing to the rational consideration of the length-dependent characteristic of flexural-torsional buckling and the interaction of flexural-torsional buckling with minor-axis flexural buckling. • Pin-ended tests on circular high strength concrete-filled stainless steel tube (HCFSST) columns were conducted. • The flexural buckling behaviour and resistances of circular HCFSST columns were discussed. • FE models were developed to validate against the test results and then used to conduct parametric studies. • The applicability of the existing design codes to circular HCFSST columns was assessed. The flexural buckling behaviour and resistances of circular high strength concrete-filled stainless steel tube (HCFSST) columns were examined based on experiments and numerical modelling, and reported in the present paper. The experimental programme was conducted on 12 circular HCFSST columns with various member relative slendernesses, and included material tests, initial global geometric imperfection measurements and pin-ended column tests, with their procedures and setups fully described. The experimentally observed results, including the failure loads and modes as well as the load-deformation curves (load-end shortening curves and load-mid-height lateral deflection curves) of the circular HCFSST column specimens and the development of the longitudinal strains of the outer stainless steel tubes, were presented and discussed. The experimental programme was then supplemented by a numerical modelling programme, where finite element models were developed and validated against the test results, and then used for conducting parametric studies to generate further numerical data on circular HCFSST columns over a broad spectrum of cross-section dimensions and member lengths. Owing to the lack of international design codes for stainless steel–high strength concrete composite structures, the relevant codified design rules for circular normal strength concrete-filled carbon steel tube columns failing by flexural buckling, as used in Europe, America and Australia/New Zealand, were assessed for their applicability to circular HCFSST columns, based on the obtained experimental and numerical data. Grade S960 ultra-high strength steel is receiving increasing attention owing to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio. However, its application in construction engineering is rather limited due to the lack of adequate design rules, as the current established codes in Europe, North America and Australia/New Zealand only cover the design of steel components with material grades up to S700 (or S690). This prompts investigations into different types of S960 UHSS structural components and development of accurate and efficient design rules for them. The present paper focuses on press-braked S960 UHSS channel section columns prone to flexural buckling about the minor principal axes, with their behaviour and resistances thoroughly examined through experiments and numerical modelling. An experimental programme was firstly performed on two non-slender press-braked channel sections, with five column specimens of varying member lengths employed for each cross-section, and included initial global and local geometric imperfection measurements and pin-ended column tests about the minor principal axes. This was followed by a parallel numerical modelling programme, where finite element (FE) models were developed to simulate the experimental results and afterwards adopted to perform a parametric study to generate additional numerical data over a broader spectrum of cross-section dimensions and member lengths. It is worth noting that there were two orientations associated with minor-axis flexural buckling of press-braked S960 UHSS channel section columns, namely 'C' orientation (indicating that columns buckled towards the webs) and 'reverse C' orientation (indicating that columns buckled towards the flange tips), and both of the two types of failure modes were carefully examined in the present study. It was found that channel section columns failing by flexural buckling in the 'reverse C' orientation generally exhibited superior resistances relative to their counterparts with failure in the 'C' orientation. The experimental and numerical data were also used to assess the applicability of the codified provisions for press-braked S700 (or S690) channel section columns failing by flexural buckling about the minor principal axes to the design of their S960 counterparts. The assessment results indicated that (i) the existing European code leads to overall conservative and scattered design flexural buckling resistances, especially for those relatively short and intermediate press-braked S960 UHSS channel section columns with failure in the 'reverse C' orientation, and (ii) the North American specification and Australian/New Zealand standard result in a higher degree of design accuracy and consistency than the European code, but with many over-predicted flexural buckling resistances for press-braked S960 UHSS channel section short and intermediate columns failing in the 'C' orientation. • Numerical models for CFS built-up columns with spacers were developed. • Detailed nonlinear response of CFS built-up columns was investigated. • Predictions as per current Australian/European CFS standards were inconsistent. • Improved design equations were proposed for better/reliable strength predictions. This paper deals with the numerical investigation aimed to study the axial capacity and the nonlinear deformation response of pin ended cold-formed steel (CFS) built-up columns under monotonic axial loading, applied concentrically. The built-up sections were constructed by adequately spaced channel sections in a back-to-back configuration, connected through webs by means of connecting elements (CFS channels) called spacers. Self-driving screws were used as fasteners to assemble together the lipped channels and spacers. Finite element (FE) models were established and verified against the previously published built-up columns with similar configuration. An extensive parametric study was conducted by varying the key parameters like plate slenderness of the lipped channels, unbraced chord slenderness, and global slenderness in order to investigate their variation on the ultimate compression resistance of these built-up columns. The effective width method was used to determine the design strengths for these built-up columns using the AS/NZ Specifications and European Specification on cold-formed steel structures, which were later compared with the results obtained from the numerical parametric study. This study indicated that the provisions that are given in the current AS/NZS and European Specification in predicting the strengths of the built-up column with spacers had shortcomings. Therefore, new design equations for the reliable design strength predictions of the CFS built-up column composed of lipped channels with spacers were proposed. The results of the assessment generally revealed that the Eurocode Class 3 slenderness limits for hot-rolled and welded sections can be safely adopted for the classification of press-braked (cold-formed) S690 high strength steel angle and channel sections subjected to compression. The accuracy of the codified design provisions established in Europe, North America and Australia/New Zealand as well as the direct strength method (DSM) to the design of press-braked S690 high strength steel angle and channel section stub columns was also assessed, based on the test data and numerical results. The North American, Australian and New Zealand standards were found to result in accurate and consistent compression capacity predictions for press-braked S690 high strength steel channel section and non-slender angle section stub columns, but greatly underestimate the compression capacities for those slender angle section stub columns, while the European code and DSM were shown to yield overall precise and consistent design compression capacities. A complementary numerical investigation was then conducted, where finite element (FE) models were firstly developed and validated against the experimental results, followed by parametric studies carried out to acquire further numerical data over a broader range of cross-section dimensions. It is worth noting that the existing design codes for steel structures, as established in Europe, America and Australia/New Zealand, are only applicable to those with material grades up to S690 (or S700 for Eurocode) and cannot be directly used for S960 UHSS structural members. In the present study, the applicability of the codified design provisions and formulations for flexural members to the examined S960 UHSS channel section beams was evaluated, based on the ultimate moments derived from structural testing and numerical modelling. The quantitative evaluation results generally revealed that the current European code provides overall consistent and precise flexural strength predictions for Class 1 and Class 2 S960 UHSS channel sections in minor-axis bending, but leads to a high level of inaccuracy (scatter and conservatism) for the design of their Class 3 and Class 4 counterparts, whilst the American specification and Australian/New Zealand standard result in scattered and excessively underestimated design flexural strengths, except for the cases of slender S960 UHSS channel section beams in 'u'-orientation bending.
