Microwave radiometry soil moisture retrieval methods suffer from uncertainties about the representation of several effects, including dielectric mixing, surface roughness, and vegetation opacity. These uncertainties lead to two major types of error: systematic bias and random errors. The effect of the uncertainties is studied using the Soil Moisture Active Passive Algorithm Testbed, a simulation environment for evaluating error propagation in retrieval algorithms, and two different common retrieval algorithms (single and dual polarizations). The two types of errors are simulated by using different representations for each factor in the forward and retrieval parts. For both algorithms, this approach introduces a spatially variable bias, which is particularly large when using a single-polarization retrieval algorithm. This paper illustrates the emergence of both this bias and the random error due to uncertainty in the representation of vegetation and soil texture effects in retrieval algorithms. The dependence of these two types of error on vegetation and soil texture properties is shown through mapping them over the simulation region. The relative contribution of these errors to the total error is strongly dependent on the simulation conditions and is not necessarily indicative of what may be experienced during actual observations. Uncertainty due to roughness representation causes a lower error than uncertainty in vegetation opacity and dielectric mixing parameterizations in the simulated soil moisture retrieval. Summation and compensation of multiple errors can cause the estimate error to increase with improved radiative transfer knowledge, even after bias removal. The retrieval of soil moisture from microwave measurements depends on several other parameterizations that are also uncertain. This paper deals with subspace-based target detection in hyperspectral images. Specifically, it focuses on a general detection scheme where, first, background is suppressed through orthogonal-subspace projection and then target detection is accomplished. An adequate estimation of the background subspace is essential to a successful outcome. The background subspace has been typically estimated globally. However, global approaches may be ineffective for small-target-detection applications since they tend to overestimate the background interference affecting a given target. This may result in a low target residual energy after background suppression that is detrimental to detection performance. In this paper, we propose a novel and fully automatic algorithm for local background-subspace estimation (LBSE). Local background has typically a lower inherent complexity than that of global background. By estimating the background subspace over a local neighborhood of the test pixel, the resulting background-subspace dimension is expected to be low, thus resulting in a higher target residual energy after suppression which benefits the detection performance. Specifically, the proposed LBSE acts on a per-pixel basis, thus adaptively tailoring the estimated basis to the local complexity of background. Both simulated and real hyperspectral data are employed to investigate the detection-performance improvements offered by LBSE with respect to both global and local methodologies previously presented. Hyperspectral images exhibit strong dependencies across spatial and spectral neighbors, which have been proved to be very useful for hyperspectral image classification. The recently defined conditional random field (CRF) can effectively model and use the dependencies for classification of hyperspectral images in a unified probabilistic framework. However, in order to be computationally tractable, the usual CRFs are limited to incorporate only pairwise potentials. Thus, the usual CRFs can capture only pairwise interactions and neglect higher order dependencies, which are potentially useful high-level properties particularly for the classification of hyperspectral image consisting of complex components. This paper overcomes this limitation by developing hyperspectral image classification algorithm based on a CRF with sparse higher order potentials, which are specially designed to incorporate complex characteristics of hyperspectral images. To efficiently implement the CRF model at training step, this paper develops an efficient local method under the piecewise training framework, while at inference step, this proposes a simple strategy to combine the piecewisely trained model to overcome the possible over-counting problems. Moreover, the combined model with the specially defined potentials can be efficiently inferred by graph cut method. The developments in sensor technology have made the high-resolution hyperspectral remote sensing data available to the remote sensing analyst for ground-cover classification and target recognition tasks. The inherent high dimensionality of such data sets and the limited ground-truth data availability in many real-life operating scenarios necessitate such hyperspectral classification systems to employ the dimensionality reduction algorithms. Previously, it has been shown that the addition of the spectral derivatives into the feature space improves the performance of the hyperspectral image analysis systems. Although the spectral derivative features are expected to provide additional information for the classification task at hand, the conventional classification techniques are typically not suitable for such fusion since simply combining these features would result in very high dimensional feature spaces, exacerbating the over-dimensionality problem. In this paper, we propose an effective approach for the decision-level fusion of the spectral reflectance information with the spectral derivative information for robust land cover classification. This paper differs from previous work because we propose effective classification strategies to alleviate the increased over-dimensionality problem introduced by the addition of the spectral derivatives for hyperspectral classification. The studies reported in this paper are conducted within the context of both single and multiple classifier systems that are designed to handle the high-dimensional feature spaces. The experimental results are reported with handheld, airborne, and spaceborne hyperspectral data. The efficacy of the proposed approaches (using spectral derivatives and single or multiple classifiers) as quantified by the overall classification accuracy (expressed in percentage) is significantly greater than that of these systems when exploiting only the reflectance information. This paper presents two semisupervised one-class support vector machine (OC-SVM) classifiers for remote sensing applications. In one-class image classification, one tries to detect pixels belonging to one of the classes in the image and reject the others. When few labeled pixels of only one class are available, obtaining a reliable classifier is a difficult task. In the particular case of SVM-based classifiers, this task is even harder because the free parameters of the model need to be finely adjusted, but no clear criterion can be adopted. In order to improve the OC-SVM classifier accuracy and alleviate the problem of free-parameter selection, the information provided by unlabeled samples present in the scene can be used. In this paper, we present two state-of-the-art algorithms for semisupervised one-class classification for remote sensing classification problems. The first proposed algorithm is based on modifying the OC-SVM kernel by modeling the data marginal distribution with the graph Laplacian built with both labeled and unlabeled samples. The second one is based on a simple modification of the standard SVM cost function which penalizes more the errors made when classifying samples of the target class. The good performance of the proposed methods is illustrated in four challenging remote sensing image classification scenarios where the goal is to detect one of the classes present on the scene. In particular, we present results for multisource urban monitoring, hyperspectral crop detection, multispectral cloud screening, and change-detection problems. With the continuing increase in the number of images collected everyday from different sensors, the automated registration of multisensor/multispectral images has become a very important issue. This is particularly true when pre- and postevent image comparison is concerned: For this particular application, the requirement of obtaining the earliest possible postevent image imposes the use of data potentially possessing significantly different characteristics with respect to the pre-event image. Strongly inhomogeneous image pairs require robust automatic registration techniques, preferably based on resolutionindependent feature-based registration. In a previous paper, we proposed a mode-based feature-matching scheme mutated from the computer vision domain and adapted to pre- and postevent feature matching. Some of the weak points highlighted in that first version are addressed in this paper, where a new version of the method is proposed, which exploits a new piece of information, i.e., the adjacency between feature points, generally preserved across the disaster event. Extensive generation of synthetic cases allowed one to obtain significant feedback and, consequently, tune the algorithm. This paper focuses on the validation of the empirically corrected total ozone column (TOC) data provided by the Earth Probe Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (EP-TOMS) using ground-based measurements recorded by a well-calibrated Brewer spectroradiometer located at El Arenosillo (Spain). In addition, satellite TOC observations derived from the OzoneMonitoring Instrument (OMI) with the TOMS algorithm are also used in this paper. The agreement between EP-TOMS TOC data and Brewer measurements is excellent (R² ~ 0.92) even for the period 2000-2005 when a higher EP-TOMS instrument degradation occurred. Despite its low magnitude, the EP-TOMS-Brewer relative differences depend on the solar zenith angle (SZA), showing a clear seasonal cycle with amplitude between ±2% and ±4%. Conversely, OMI-Brewer relative differences show a constant negative value around -1% with no significant dependence on SZA. No significant dependence on the ground-based to satellitebased differences with respect to the EP-TOMS scene or to the OMI crosstrack position is observed for either satellite retrieval algorithm. Finally, TOC, estimated by the two satellite instruments, have also been compared, showing a good agreement (R² ~ 0.88). Overall, we conclude that the empirical correction of the EP-TOMS data record provides a reprocessed set of high quality. However, EP-TOMS data after year 2000 should not be used in calculations of global-ozone trending due to remaining errors in the data set and because it is no longer an independent data set. In this paper, we investigate the problem of signal subspace identification (SSI) and dimensionality reduction in hyperspectral images. We consider two recently proposed SSI algorithms: the Maximum Orthogonal Complement Analysis (MOCA) algorithm and the Robust Signal Subspace Estimator (RSSE) algorithm. Such algorithms are robust to the presence of rare signal components and are particularly effective in reducing the number of features in the preprocessing step for small target detection applications. In this paper, MOCA and RSSE are briefly revisited and integrated in a common theoretical framework in order to better highlight and understand their peculiarities. Furthermore, their performances are compared in terms of computational complexity and of their ability to address both the abundant and the rare signal components. A modified version of the MOCA is also introduced, which is computationally more efficient than the original algorithm. The combination of frequency-modulation continuous-wave (FMCW) technology and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) promises a lightweight, cost-effective, and high-quality imaging sensor for remote sensing. However, the long signal duration time leads to the failure of the conventional start/stop approximation of the pulsed SAR. In this paper, a signal model is proposed to address the effects of the continuous motion during the transmit time on the echoed signal. Based on the model, an analytical point target reference spectrum is derived. From the spectrum, it will be seen that the continuous motion introduces an additional range-azimuth coupling term and a range walk term compared with the conventional pulsed SAR. The range walk term is well known, whereas the foregoing range-azimuth coupling term is formulated for the first time in the FMCW SAR community. For the squint and spotlight modes, these range walk and range-azimuth coupling terms might significantly degrade the image quality. In this paper, based on the proposed analytical signal model, we further discuss the application of the wavenumber domain algorithm for the FMCW SAR data. In addition, different approximations of the Stolt mapping are made to highlight the effect of the range-dependent higher-order range-azimuth coupling terms on the 2-D impulse responses. The Earth's topography, including vegetation and human-made features, reduced to a virtual 3-D representation is a key geographic layer for any extended development or risk management project. Processed from multiple aerial images or from airborne lidar systems, the 3-D topography is first represented as a point cloud. This paper deals with the generation of digital terrain models (DTMs) in natural landscapes.We present a global methodology for estimating the terrain height by deriving a predictive filter paradigm. Under the assumption that the terrain topography (elevation and slope) is regular in a neighboring system, a predictive filter combines linearly the predicted topographic values and the effectivemeasured values. In this paper, such a filter is applied to 3-D lidar data which are known to be of high elevation accuracy. The algorithm generates an adaptive local geometry wherein the elevation distribution of the point cloud is analyzed. Since local terrain elevations depend on the local slope, a predictive filter is first applied on the slopes and then on the terrain elevations. The algorithm propagates through the point cloud following specific rules in order to optimize the probability of computing areas containing terrain points. Considered as an initial surface, the previous DTM is finally regularized in a Bayesian framework. Our approach is based on the definition of an energy function that manages the evolution of a terrain surface. The energy is designed as a compromise between a data attraction term and a regularization term. The minimum of this energy corresponds to the final terrain surface. This paper presents a frequency-domain-based focusing algorithm for the bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR) data in airborne/stationary configuration. In this bistatic configuration, only the moving platform contributes to the azimuth modulation, whereas the stationary platform introduces a range offset (RO) to the range migration trajectories of targets at the same range. The offset is determined by the azimuth position of different targets with respect to the stationary platform. Since the RO is position dependent, monostatic SAR imaging algorithms are not able to focus the bistatic data collected in this configuration. In this paper, an analytical bistatic point-target reference spectrum is derived, and then, a frequency-domain-based algorithm is developed to focus the bistatic data. It uses an interpolation-free wavenumber-domain algorithm as a basis and performs a range-variant interpolation to correct the position-dependent RO in the image domain after coarse focusing. The proposed algorithm is validated by the simulated data and the real BiSAR data acquired by the Forschungsgesellschaft für Angewandte Naturwissenschaften's airborne SAR system, PAMIR, in December 2007. The analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) migration developed by Gilmore et al. has been refined within the context of the inverse scattering problem, particularly the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA). The SAR migration algorithm can be deduced from the DWBA-based inversion formulation when the following assumptions are satisfied: 1) homogeneous and nonfrequency-dependent background medium; 2) the exploding source model; and 3) the well-resolved targets described by an orthogonal relation derived in this paper. In addition, the other contributions of this paper are as follows: 1) The removal of the ω2 term has been clarified by the derived orthogonal relation; 2) a scale factor that balances the near-far field has been derived; and 3) a novel SAR migration algorithm for the imaging of targets embedded in a layered medium has been proposed. This paper deals with the problem of signal subspace estimation for dimensionality reduction (DR) in hyperspectral images in the presence of rare pixels, i.e., pixels that are scarcely represented in the image and containing spectral components that are linearly independent of the background. Most of the classical methods proposed in the literature are based on the analysis second-order statistics (SOS), which are weakly influenced by the rare signals. Therefore, such techniques estimate the signal subspace addressing mostly the background and ignoring the presence of rare pixels. This may reduce the target/background spectral contrast, thus decreasing the detection performance when DR is adopted as preprocessing task in small-target detection applications. In this paper, a new robust algorithm, namely, robust signal subspace estimation (RSSE), is developed, which preserves both abundant and rare signal components. It combines the analysis of SOS and a recent approach based on the analysis of the l2∞ norm. The novel contribution of this paper is twofold. First, the RSSE algorithm is presented, which includes a new iterative procedure to derive the signal subspace and an original statistical method to estimate the data dimensionality. Second, an ad simulation strategy is proposed to assess the performance of signal subspace estimation methods in the presence of rare signal components. The procedure is adopted to compare the RSSE algorithm with a classical technique based on the analysis of SOS. This paper deals with an omega-K algorithm for focusing bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The key of the proposed algorithm is the derivation of a frequency mapping function by using Neo's method, of series reversion. The registration of the focused image onto the ground plane is discussed in detail, which is based on a conclusion that the targets whose instantaneous Doppler frequencies at zero azimuth time are the same as that of the reference target at zero azimuth time will all be focused at the reference target's azimuth position in the focused image. The range invariance region size, which the proposed algorithm can process, is also determined in this paper. The proposed algorithm can handle extreme bistatic configurations with wide apertures and large squint angles. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by simulation results. Although developed for the azimuth-invariant case, the proposed algorithm can be readily extended to the azimuth-variant case, as long as we divide the SAR data into blocks in the azimuth direction so that each block of SAR data can be assumed quasi-stationary in the azimuth direction. The simulation of remote-sensing images is a useful tool for a variety of tasks, such as the definition of future Earth Observation systems, the optimization of instrument specifications, and the development and validation of data processing algorithms. A scene simulator for optical hyperspectral and multispectrai data has been implemented in the frame of the Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) mission. EnMAP is German-built hyperspectral space sensor scheduled for launch 2012. EnMAP will measure in the 420-2450-nm spectral range at a varying spectral sampling of 6.5-10 nm. Images will cover 30 x 30 km areas at an approximate ground sampling distance of 30 m. The EnMAP scene simulator presented in this paper able to generate realistic EnMAP-like data in an automatic way under a set of user-driven instrumental and scene parameters. Radiance and digital numbers data are generated by five sequential processing modules which are able to produce data over a range of natural environments, acquisition and illumination geometries, cloud covers, and instrument configurations. The latter include the simulation of data nonuniformity in the spatial and spectral domains, spatially coherent and noncoherent instrumental noise, and instrument's modulation transfer function. Realistic surface patterns for the simulated data are provided by existing remote-sensing data in different environments, from dry geological sites to green vegetation areas. A flexible radiative transfer simulation scheme enables the generation of different illumination, observation, and atmospheric conditions. This paper focuses on the bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing in a spaceborne/airborne hybrid bistatic configuration. Due to the extreme differences in platform velocities and slant ranges, the airborne system operates in the inverse sliding-spotlight mode, while the spaceborne system works in the sliding-spotlight mode to achieve a tradeoff between azimuth scene size and azimuth resolution. In this extreme bistatic configuration, our original bistatic formula shows a limitation of accurately describing the bistatic point-target reference spectrum, owing to the assumption of equal contributions of transmitter and receiver to the total Doppler spectrum. We extend our previous formula using the weighting operation where the weighting factor is the ratio of the azimuth time-bandwidth product (TBP) of the platform to the total azimuth TBP. In this paper, the bistatic-deformation and azimuth-dependent range-cell-migration terms were removed with phase multiplications performed blockwise in range-azimuth subsections. The remaining quasi-monostatic term shows the characteristic of the conventional monostatic SAR besides an additional azimuth-scaling term. For the monostatic characteristic, any precision monostatic SAR processing algorithms can handle. In this paper, we prefer the wavenumber-domain algorithm (also known Omega-K), since it can accurately correct the range dependence of the range-azimuth coupling, as well as the azimuth-frequency dependence. For the azimuth-scaling term, an inverse scaled Fourier transformation is performed to correct it. This paper presents a new neural network (NN) algorithm for real-time retrievals of low amounts of precipitable water vapor (PWV) and integrated liquid water from millimeter-wave ground-based observations. Measurements are collected by the 183.3-GHz G-band vapor radiometer (GVR) operating at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Climate Research Facility, Barrow, AK. The NN provides the means to explore the nonlinear regime of the measurements and investigate the physical boundaries of the operability of the instrument. A methodology to compute individual error bars associated with the NN output is developed, and a detailed error analysis of the network output is provided. Through the error analysis, it is possible to isolate several components contributing to the overall retrieval errors and to analyze the dependence of the errors on the inputs. The network outputs and associated errors are then compared with results from a physical retrieval and with the ARM two-channel microwave radiometer (MWR) statistical retrieval. When the NN is trained with a seasonal training data set, the retrievals of water vapor yield results that are comparable to those obtained from a traditional physical retrieval, with a retrieval error percentage of ~5% when the PWV is between 2 and l0 mm, but with the advantages that the NN algorithm does not require vertical profiles of temperature and humidity as input and is significantly faster computationally. Liquid water path (LWP) retrievals from the NN have a significantly improved clear-sky bias (mean of ~2.4 g/m²) and a retrieval error varying from 1 to about 10 g/ms when the PWV amount is between 1 and 10 mm. As an independent validation of the LWP retrieval, the Iongwave downwelling surface flux was computed and compared with observations. The comparison shows a significant improvement with respect to the MWR statistical retrievals, particularly for LWP amounts of less than 60 g/m². This paper shows that the GVR alone can provide overall improved PWV and LWP retrievals when the PWV amount is less than 10 mm, and, when combined with the MWR, can provide improved retrievals over the whole water-vapor range. This paper presents a revision, an update, and an extension of the generalized single-channel (SC) algorithm developed by Jimenez-Munoz and Sobrino (2003), which was particularized to the thermal-infrared (TIR) channel (band 6) located in the Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor. The SC algorithm relies on the concept of atmospheric functions (AFs) which are dependent on atmospheric transmissivity and upwelling and downwelling atmospheric radiances. These AFs are fitted versus the atmospheric water vapor content for operational purposes. In this paper, we present updated fits using MODTRAN 4 radiative transfer code, and we also extend the application of the SC algorithm to the TIR channel of the TM sensor onboard the Landsat-4 platform and the enhanced TM plus sensor onboard the Landsat-7 platform. Five different atmospheric sounding databases have been considered to create simulated data used for retrieving AFs and to test the algorithm. The test from independent simulated data provided root mean square error (rmse) values below 1 K in most cases when atmospheric water vapor content is lower than 2 g middotcm-2. For values higher than 3 g middotcm-2, errors are not acceptable, as what occurs with other SC algorithms. Results were also tested using a land surface temperature map obtained from one Landsat-5 image acquired over an agricultural area using inversion of the radiative transfer equation and the atmospheric profile measured in situ at the sensor overpass time. This paper deals with the imaging problem of one-stationary bistatic SAR (BiSAR) with large bistatic angle. An improved nonlinear chirp scaling (NLCS) algorithm is proposed for this BiSAR. The main work here includes three aspects. First, a range chirp scaling function for correcting the differential range cell migration correction is derived. Then, the azimuth perturbation is generated by local fit method, which makes the NLCS algorithm suitable for the large bistatic angle case. Furthermore, the negative effects introduced by the perturbation (including phase error and locality error) are discussed, and some compensation methods are proposed to enhance the capability of the algorithm.. This paper first shows the 3-D property of bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR) geometry, which clarifies that the algorithms for bistatic SAR should be deduced in 3-D space. It then models the bistatic echo according to the 3-D geometry and obtains the signal spectrum in the wavenumber domain. Based on the spectrum, the formula for the wavenumber-domain interpolation of the omega-K algorithm is deduced, and the residual phase is obtained. Then, the impacts of the residual phase, including position displacement, range, and azimuth defocusing, and a constant phase for each pixel, are explicated. This paper departs from the popular usage of the Backus-Gilbert inversion (BGI) method as a tool for inversion of antenna temperature measurements in microwave radiometry. The BGI method is applied in this paper to enhance the information content of an existing set of oversampled brightness-temperature (TB) data. The purpose is to isolate the inversion process from its resolution enhancement counterpart. The advantage gained is that the resolution enhancement can be performed in a simplified way and in a different level of processing that starts with the scan-mode TB data product and simply requires with it the knowledge of the antenna gain pattern and the sensor's scan geometry. The technique is demonstrated with the 19.35-GHz Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) channel, which provides oversampled TB data. The radiometric resemblance of this channel with that of the 37 GHz and geocollocation of their TB footprints facilitate validation of the enhancement of features. The significance of oversampling the low-frequency (LF) radiometer channels is underscored in the process, which gives the authors the confidence to propose oversampling of the LF data for the forthcoming sensor Microwave Analysis and Detection of Rain and Atmospheric Structures (MADRAS) onboard the Megha-Tropiques mission, which is a joint ISRO-CNES collaboration (due for launch in 2009). The frequency scaling algorithm (FSA) was proposed to process the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data acquired via the dechirp-on-receive approach. Some aspects of improving the FSA are investigated in this paper, based on which an extended FSA (EFSA) is presented. The general purpose of the EFSA is to reduce the effect of range spectrum shift of the intermediate processing results, which occurs during the scaling operation in the FSA, so as to achieve a more effective utilization of the processed bandwidth. This paper evaluates the performance of the global precipitation rate retrieval algorithm for the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) that was described in Part I of this paper. AMSU is in polar orbit on several National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operational weather satellites. Predicted rms retrieval errors based on a 15-km resolution 0.5-1.0-mm/h MMS truth were 0.88, 0.83, 1.13, and 3.04 for stratiform, warm rain, ice-free rain, and convective rain, respectively, which were averaged over all view angles for land and sea up to 730 latitude. For MM5 rates of 4-8 mm/h, these rms errors increased to 2.8, 3.4, 3.9, and 4.9 mm/h, respectively. The corresponding rms retrieval accuracies for MM5 hydrometeor water paths between 0.125 and 0.25 mm for rainwater, snow, and graupel were 0.19, 0.10, and 0.22 mm, respectively. The rms retrieval accuracy for the 0.125-0.25-m/s peak vertical wind was 0.08 m/s. Biases are small for cumulative precipitation estimates, although an upward correction factor of 1.37 is derived for convective precipitation rate probability distributions. Differences between these retrievals and those from the conically scanned Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System instrument and an alternate NOAA AMSU algorithm are also characterized. A 3-D inverse synthetic aperture radar imaging method for rapidly spinning targets, i.e., a generalized Radon transform (GRT)-CLEAN algorithm, is proposed in this paper. The signal model is first changed into an equivalent high-speed turntable model after the compensation of the translational motion. Second, based on the relationship between the range profile variation of the spinning targets and the scatterers' positions, the GRT is utilized to estimate the scatterers' positions. Finally, combining the GRT with the modified CLEAN approach, the parameters of each scatterer and, thus, the 3-D image of the targets can be obtained. In addition to the development of the GRT-CLEAN algorithm, the estimation and compensation of the linear translational motion error in the imaging process is also considered in this paper. In this paper, we aim at presenting a survey on automatic absorption recovery methods for imaging spectroscopy. We commence by viewing the algorithms in the literature from a technical perspective and presenting an overview of the derivative analysis, fingerprint, and maximum modulus wavelet transform techniques. In addition to these methods, we also present a novel absorption recovery approach based upon unimodal regression and continuum removal. With this technical review of the methods under study, we perform a complexity analysis and examine the implementation issues pertaining to each of the alternatives. We show how detected absorption bands can be used for purposes of material identification. We conclude this paper by providing a performance study and providing identification results on hyper. spectral imagery. Inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images are frequently used in target classification and recognition applications. Some classifiers often require features that can be more easily obtained by extracting scattering centers from ISAR data rather than by reconstructing ISAR images. An available method for scattering center extraction, namely, the CLEAN technique, was proposed in a recent paper by Yang et al. In this paper, an improvement of this CLEAN technique is proposed that introduces a new method for detecting scattering centers. The proposed technique is based on a Gaussianity test, and its effectiveness is first theoretically proven and then tested on real data. The combination of frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) technology and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques leads to lightweight cost-effective imaging sensors of high resolution. One limiting factor to the use of FMCW sensors is the well-known presence of nonlinearities in the transmitted signal. This results in contrast- and range-resolution degradation, particularly when the system is intended for high-resolution long-range applications, as it is the case for SAR. This paper presents a novel processing solution, which solves the nonlinearity problem for the whole range profile. Additionally, the conventional stop-and-go approximation used in pulse-radar algorithms is not valid in FMCW SAR applications under certain circumstances. Therefore, the motion within the sweep needs to be taken into account. Analytical development of the FMCW SAR signal model, starting from the deramped signal and without using the stop-and-go approximation, is presented in this paper. The model is then applied to stripmap, spotlight, and single-transmitter/multiple-receiver digital-beamforming SAR operational mode. Application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry to the retrieval of geophysical parameters from vegetated scenes is based on simple direct models of such scenes. The first part of this paper presents an analysis of the correspondence between these simple models, namely, the random volume over ground and the oriented volume over ground (OVoG), and experimental data from samples of two agricultural crops (maize and rice) acquired in controlled conditions. Although an overall agreement between model and data is clear, some discrepancies have been found as a consequence of two assumptions in the model formulation: vertical homogeneity of the vegetation volume and absence of multiple scattering effects inside the volume. This paper presents the shape and location of the visible region of the experimental coherences on the complex plane and compares it with the feasible region predicted by the model. This comparison has also pointed out the low sensitivity of the direct model to extinction coefficients. In the second part, two different strategies for a complete inversion (i.e., estimation of all model parameters) of the OVoG model are proposed and compared, using the same data set. The first one is based on a combination of geometrical and numerical approaches (genetic algorithms) and the second one on a dual-baseline configuration. In all cases, ground topography is accurately estimated, with a maximum error of 10 cm. Vegetation height estimates are accurate up to 30 cm, with some bands and baseline configurations providing errors below 15 cm. We describe in detail the theoretical and practical implementation aspects of a simulation for marine radars which can, in particular, be used in multistatic configurations. Since the simulator is intended to deliver pseudoraw signals, it can be used later as a tool to benchmark and improve postprocessing algorithms such as bistatic synthetic aperture radar focusing algorithms and ship wake detection algorithms. The work is divided into two parts. This paper reviews and recalls theoretical prerequisites necessary in implementing such a simulator. Included are the full derivation of the bistatic radar equation from the transmitter to the receiver, accounting also for the transmit-receive time, a description of the sea state phenomenology, a review of the theory of electromagnetic scattering from the sea surface, and the presentation and validation of the method used in the simulation. Standard synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing algorithms use analytically derived transfer functions in the 2-D frequency and range/Doppler domains. These rely on the assumption of hyperbolic range histories of monostatic SARs with straight flight paths. For bistatic SARs, the range histories are no longer hyperbolic, and simple analytic transforms do not exist. This paper offers two solutions for bistatic SAR data processing under the restriction of quasi-stationarity, i.e., sufficiently equal velocity vectors of transmitter and receiver. 1) Moderately bistatic configurations can be handled satisfactorily by using hyperbolic range functions with a modified velocity parameter, which is a solution already well known for the accommodation of curved orbits in the monostatic case. This "equivalent velocity" approach is shown to be of surprising range of validity even for pronounced bistatic situations. It is not to be confused with the "equivalent monostatic flight path" approximation, which is shown to be inapplicable for any practical case. 2) With increasing separation of transmitter and receiver, the equivalent velocity approximation deteriorates. To cope with extreme bistatic configurations, a general approach named "NuSAR" is proposed, where the involved transfer functions are replaced by numerically computed ones. This paper describes how the transfer functions are computed from the given orbits and the shape of the Earth surface. In any of these two cases, the bistatic SAR data can be processed by standard SAR processors; only the conventional transfer functions need to be replaced. Neither are there time-domain prefocusing or postfocusing steps required nor complicated mathematical expansions involved. This paper addresses the capability of synthetic aperture radar and optical images in combination with theoretical models to detect the vegetation water content (VWC) at field level. In this paper, a retrieval algorithm for the estimation of VWC from AirSAR acquired on vegetated fields during the SMEX'02 experiment is addressed. The aforementioned campaign has been chosen because, along with sensor observations, extensive ground truth measurements were acquired. The retrieval procedure, which is based on a Bayesian approach, has been initially developed for soil moisture extraction, It consists of two modules: one is pertinent to bare soils and the other one has been modified for vegetated fields. The last one uses the synergy with optical images to correct for the contribution of VWC. The VWC, a variable in the inversion procedure, as well as soil moisture can be estimated. The results indicate a good correlation with both ground measurements and VWC calculated from Landsat images through the use of normalized difference water index (NDWI). Furthermore, in the inversion procedure, the introduction of the dependence on roughness improves the estimates. This indicates that, even for dense vegetation, the contribution from bare soil greatly influences the radar signal. Three main levels of VWC are discriminated in the inversion procedure: values below 1 kg/m², values between 1 and 3 kg/m², and values greater than 3 kg/m². [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the field of civil engineering, sounding the top layer of carriageways, i.e., the pavement layer, is classically performed using standard ground-penetrating radar (GPR), whose resolution is bandwidth dependent. The layer thickness is deduced from both the time delays of backscattered echoes and the known dielectric constant of the medium. This paper focuses on superresolution and high-resolution techniques, which serve to improve the time resolution of GPR signals, and presents a parametric technique and five subspace methods, namely, estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT), multiple-signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm, Min-Norm, and their polynomial versions root-MUSIC and root-Min-Norm. The performance of these algorithms will be compared in terms of resolution power as well as root-mean-square error on the estimated thickness. The two-scale electromagnetic model is a well-established theory for simulating microwave polarimetric passive observations of a sea surface. A critical aspect is the long computational time that is required to run the forward model, which hampers the creation of large training databases or iterative simulations within retrieval algorithms. To tackle this problem, a neural network (NN) technique is proposed in this paper. In particular, we have adopted NNs to emulate a simulator named SEAWIND, which implements the two-scale model and was validated in previous works. Two training algorithms, including a regularized approach, have been considered and compared. The assessment of the proposed approach has been carried out by statistically comparing neural-network-derived simulations with SEAWIND-derived ones for two validation data sets comprising different climatic conditions, as well as by computing the azimuthal Fourier harmonic coefficients versus wind speed and atmospheric transmittance. Regressive model functions have also been used as benchmarks. This paper outlines the implementation details and enhancements of a previously described new concept in blind seismic deconvolution that is referred to as principle phase decomposition (PPD). A requirement of the PPD algorithm is for the investigator to determine the seismogram's dominant frequency (DF) and corresponding principle phase components (PPCs). Once these parameters are estimated, a hybrid Rao-Blackwellized particle filter and a hidden Markov model (HMM) filter are utilized to separate the potentially time-variant overlapping source wavelets. A variation of the PPD algorithm that is referred to as the PPD wavelet extraction (PPD-WE) technique addresses the requirement of estimating the seismogram's DF and PPCs. This paper describes in detail the PPD-WE algorithm where the overlapping source wavelets are sequentially and chronologically extracted from the seismogram under analysis. A HMM filter is described which facilitates in the simultaneous estimation of the DF and the corresponding phase of the source wavelet to be extracted within the PPD-WE algorithm. Systems engineering constitutes a group of processes and methods to design and implement a system for optimal performance given limited time, technology, or resources. As with any system, it is important to understand which subcomponents are most important and which are less important so that appropriate resource allocations may be made. An example of a complex system is the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). Its subsystems include the satellite vehicle, the precipitation radar (PR), the ground validation system, and the retrieval algorithms. Each of these subsystems contributes to the overall success of the mission. Sensitivity analysis (SA) is a method whereby the output response from a model can be linked back to the variability in the input parameters. This paper describes a method of performing SA on a TRMM PR-like (TL) rainfall retrieval algorithm (based on the TRMM 2A25 algorithm) to better describe how the uncertainty in the model output can be apportioned to the uncertainty in the input factors and gain greater understanding as to the relative importance of each factor. For example, assuming a model with several input factors, if one factor is found to be the dominating cause of model error, and the others contribute relatively little, then resources can be devoted to improving the accuracy of one factor, thereby improving the overall model accuracy. This paper is based on global SA using a variance decomposition technique. Analyses are done and results are presented for factor importance for cases over both ocean and land. Results for the simple TL algorithm considered in this paper show that at low rain rate, the a and b coefficients in the R = aZbe relationship contribute the greatest amount to the output variance. This paper proposes a new inverse method for microwave-based subsurface sensing of lossy dielectric objects embedded in a dispersive lossy ground with an unknown rough surface. An iterative inversion algorithm is employed to reconstruct the geometry and dielectric properties of the half-space ground as well as that of the buried object. B-splines are used to model the shape of the object as well as the height of the rough surface. In both cases, the control points for the spline function represent the unknowns to be recovered. A single-pole rational transfer function is used to capture the dispersive nature of the background. Here, the coefficients in the numerator and denominator are the unknowns. The approach presented in this paper is based on the state-of-the-art semianalytic mode matching forward model, which is a fast and efficient algorithm to determine the scattered electromagnetic fields. The wavelet-based scheme for the fusion of multispectral (MS) and panchromatic (PAN) imagery has become quite popular due to its ability to preserve the spectral fidelity of the MS imagery while improving its spatial quality. This is important if the resultant imagery is used for automatic classification. Wavelet-based fusion results depend on the number of decomposition levels applied in the wavelet transform. Too few decomposition levels result in poor spatial quality fused images. On the other hand, too many levels reduce the spectral similarity between the original MS and the pan-sharpened images. If the shift-invariant wavelet transform is applied, each excessive decomposition level results in a large computational penalty. Thus, the choice of the number of decomposition levels is significant. In this paper, PAN and MS image pairs with different resolution ratios were fused using the shift-invariant wavelet transform, and the optimal decomposition levels were determined for each resolution ratio. In general, it can be said that the fusion of images with larger resolution ratios requires a higher number of decomposition levels. This paper provides the practitioner an understanding of the tradeoffs associated with the computational demand and the spatial and spectral quality of the wavelet-based fusion algorithm as a function of the number of decomposition levels. In a previous paper, a two-dimensional Fourier domain synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw signal simulator that exploits the efficiency of fast Fourier transform algorithms was presented. It accounts for the effects of sensor trajectory deviations and is able to generate the raw signal corresponding to extended scenes in a few seconds. However, a narrow-beam—slow-deviation assumption is made; hence, the approach can be applied only to some SAR systems and/or trajectory deviations. To overcome this limitation, in this paper, we show that the narrow-beam—slow-deviation assumption can be relaxed, at the expense of computation efficiency, if use is made of one-dimensional azimuth Fourier domain processing followed by range time-domain integration. The latter approach only requires some reasonable assumptions on the sensor motion and on the SAR system features; hence, it can be used for airborne SAR systems, and turns out to be still much more efficient than the time-domain one; hence, extended scenes can still be considered. Validity limits of the approach are also analytically evaluated, and several simulation results are finally presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme. Bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) uses a separated transmitter and receiver flying on different platforms to achieve benefits like exploitation of additional information contained in the bistatic reflectivity of targets, reduced vulnerability for military applications, forward-looking SAR imaging, or increased radar cross section. Besides technical problems such as synchronization of the oscillators, involved adjustment of transmit pulse versus receive gate timing, antenna pointing, flight coordination, and motion compensation, the development of a bistatic focusing algorithm is still in progress and not sufficiently solved. As a step to a numerically efficient processor, this paper presents a bistatic range migration algorithm for the translationally invariant case, where transmitter and receiver have equal velocity vectors. In this paper, the algorithm was successfully applied to simulated and real bistatic data. The real bistatic data have been acquired with the Forschungsgesellschaft für Angewandte Naturwissenschaften (FGAN)'s X-band SAR systems, namely the Airborne Experimental Radar II and the Phased Array Multifunctional Imaging Radar, in October 2003. Spatial resolution is a key parameter of all remote sensing satellites and platforms. The nominal spatial resolution of satellites is a well-known characteristic because it is directly related to the area in ground that represents a pixel in the detector. Nevertheless, in practice, the actual resolution of a specific image obtained from a satellite is difficult to know precisely because it depends on many other factors such as atmospheric conditions. However, if one has two or more images of the same region, it is possible to compare their relative resolutions. In this paper, a wavelet-decomposition-based method for the determination of the relative resolution between two remotely sensed images of the same area is proposed. The method can be applied to panchromatic, multispectral, and mixed (one panchromatic and one multispectral) images. As an example, the method was applied to compute the relative resolution between SPOT-3, Landsat-5, and Landsat-7 panchromatic and multispectral images taken under similar as well as under very different conditions. On the other hand, if the true absolute resolution of one of the images of the pair is known, the resolution of the other can be computed. Thus, in the last part of this paper, a spatial calibrator that is designed and constructed to help compute the absolute resolution of a single remotely sensed image is described, and an example of its use is presented. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for estimating the fractal dimension of sea synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The algorithm is based on the variation method, and it is suitably designed for the analysis of sea SAR images. The SAR image fractal dimension is a feature that provides a measure of the image roughness. Such a feature can play an important role in the classification process for recognizing the presence of anomalies on the sea surface. The innovation aspects of this paper are listed as follows: 1) an extension of the variation method, which was proposed for the fractal analysis of one-dimensional signals, to the case of two-dimensional (2-D) functions; 2) a numerical formulation of the variation method, which is suitable for processing 2-D discrete signals; and 3) an optimization of the algorithm for sea SAR image analysis. The algorithm is tested and validated both on simulated and real ERS-1/2 Precision Image sea SAR images and compared with the classical estimation algorithm based on spectral analysis. Meeting the accuracy demand of products derived from spaceborne laser altimetry requires post-launch calibration/validation procedures. Over general surfaces, such as the ones land or ice offer, calibration methods that suite undulating topography should be applied. Whereas the estimation of calibration parameters usually refers to the derivation of an error model, the problem here extends beyond that. Not knowing in advance the offsets between the recorded and actual footprint locations implies that the offsets and the calibration parameters should be estimated jointly. In addition, concerns arise regarding the reliability and quality of the estimates, namely avoiding convergence to a false solution and avoiding estimates that are highly correlated and with a low level of accuracy. The correlation and the accuracy can indeed be estimated in retrospect, but the preference is to learn in advance what factors affect them and under what circumstances they can be optimized. This paper analyzes the calibration problem along the lines of correctness and reliable estimation and shows that the error recovery model provides ample information that can lead to a solution that is both efficient and an integral part of a calibration model. Analysis of the model shows that over natural topography relatively short sites are sufficient for achieving a reliable calibration. The paper then shows that by applying optimization criteria on the estimation, rules for predicting the quality of the solution can be derived as well as general measures for evaluating sites considered for calibration. This paper presents a retrieval algorithm that estimates spatial and temporal distribution of volumetric soil moisture content, at an approximate depth of 5 cm, using multitemporal ENVISAT Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) alternating polarization images, acquired at low incidence angles (i.e., from 15° to 31°). The algorithm appropriately assimilates a priori information on soil moisture content and surface roughness in order to constrain the inversion of theoretical direct models, such as the integral equation method model and the geometric optics model. The a priori information on soil moisture content is obtained through simple lumped water balance models, whereas that on soil roughness is derived by means of an empirical approach. To update prior estimates of surface parameters, when no reliable a priori information is available, a technique based solely on the use of multitemporal SAR information is proposed. The developed retrieval algorithm is assessed on the Matera site (Italy) where multitemporal ground and ASAR data were simultaneously acquired in 2003. Simulated and experimental results indicate the possibility of attaining an accuracy of approximately 5% in the retrieved volumetric soil moisture content, provided that sufficiently accurate a priori information on surface parameters (i.e., within 20% of their whole variability range) is available. As an example, multitemporal soil moisture maps at watershed scale, characterized by a spatial resolution of approximately 150 m, are derived and illustrated in the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a novel adaptive fuzzy evidential nearest neighbor formulation for classifying remotely sensed images. The formulation combines the generalized fuzzy version of the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory (DSET) and the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm. Each of the K nearest neighbors provides evidence on the belongingness of the input pattern to be classified, and it is evaluated based on a measure of disapproval to achieve the adaptive capability during the classification process. The disapproval measure quantifies the lack of support with respect to the belongingness of the input pattern to a given class. Pieces of evidence are ranked based on their degree of disapproval and fused in a sequential manner. The pignistic Shannon entropy is used to estimate the degree of consensus among pieces of evidence provided by nearest neighbors and as a criterion for terminating the evidence fusion process. The paper reports the results of experimental work conducted to evaluate the proposed classification scheme using real multichannel remote sensing images. As will be demonstrated using the experimental results, the proposed classification scheme demonstrated robust performance and outperformed commonly used methods such as the K-nearest neighbor algorithm of Cover and Hart (1967), the fuzzy K-nearest neighbor algorithm of Keller et al. (1985), the evidence-theoretic K-nearest neighbor algorithm of Denoex (1995), and its fuzzy version of Zouhal and Denoex (1997). In this paper, we present a nonlinear version of the well-known anomaly detection method referred to as the RX-algorithm. Extending this algorithm to a feature space associated with the original input space via a certain nonlinear mapping function can provide a nonlinear version of the RX-algorithm. This non- linear RX-algorithm, referred to as the kernel RX-algorithm, is basically intractable mainly due to the high dimensionality of the feature space produced by the nonlinear mapping function. However, in this paper it is shown that the kernel RX-algorithm can easily be implemented by kernelizing the RX-algorithm in the feature space in terms of kernels that implicitly compute dot products in the feature space. Improved performance of the kernel RX-algorithm over the conventional RX-algorithm is shown by testing several hyperspectral imagery for military target and mine detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is well known that combining spatial and spectral information can improve land use classification from satellite imagery. Human activity on the ground, such as construction, induces changes in both the photometric structure of the image and in its spectral content owing to, primarily, changes in vegetation density and surface materials. This paper introduces a novel approach to combine spatial (more precisely, structural) information extracted from (1-m resolution) panchromatic Ikonos imagery with the multispectral response (4-m resolution) available from the same sensor. Of the prior work combining spatial and spectral information, none has extracted structural features as we do, and none has combined these information sources as early in the process. The classifier we describe here, discriminating urban and rural regions, is a front-end component of a fairly complete satellite image analysis system that identifies suburban residential areas and extracts their street networks and single-family houses. We extract structural information in the form of photometric straight lines and their spatial arrangement over relatively small neighborhoods. To capture the multispectral information, we turn to the well-known normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and an improved linearized version of our own development (details of the structural analysis and the theoretical development of the linearized NDVI appear elsewhere). This paper addresses the novel combination of these types of features (hybrids) by using the structural features, straight line support regions based on gradient orientation, as cue regions for multispectral analysis. We test the hybrid features in a range of parametric and nonparametric classifiers. We also implement and test a probabilistic relaxation algorithm followed by the maximum a priori decision rule. This paper develops a critical review of the hyperspectral splitting of the solar reflected radiation acquired by hyperspectral imaging sensors. The bandwidth used in the range from 2.0-2.5 μm by many hyperspectral sensors sometimes is too narrow for land cover classification. In fact, hyperspectral imagers often suffer from low signal-to-noise (SNR) in the short-wave infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, resulting in noisy image collection. This paper presents a new methodological approach to the splitting of the solar reflected radiation, called the "superspectral approach." It is based on the principle of increasing the channel bandwidth by increasing the number of wavelengths, to build synthetic spectral bands with higher SNRI The method- ology has been applied to the Multispectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer (MIVIS) sensor, an airborne hyperspectral scanner used for environmental remote sensing applications in Italy. Interesting results have been achieved in crop classification, processing the Cordenons survey carried out in August 2001 in the northeastern part of Italy. The Spectral Angle Mapper algorithm was used for classification because it is insensitive to shadows. For accuracy assessment, the overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient (k) were calculated and used in the comparison. Using the superspectral approach, an increment in the overall accuracy of about 42% and an increment in the kappa coefficient of about 51 % were obtained in comparison to the classification accuracy of unprocessed original MINIS data (OA = 41.21, k = 0.35). A second case study is presented using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's experimental hyperspectral imager HYPERION. Data acquired over the lake of Garda (Italy) in October 2002 was processed with the superspectral approach. Comparing the simulated HYPERION superspectral bands with the original data, SNR improvements are achieved in the shortwave infrared region (from 0.7-54.2 for 2.012-μm wavelength and from 0.7-64.5 for the 2.365-μm wavelength). The goal of the project described in this paper is to build a prototype of an operational system, which will provide registration within subpixel accuracy of multitemporal Landsat data, acquired by either Landsat-5 or Landsat-7 Thematic Mapper instruments. Integrated within an automated mass processing system for Landsat data, the input to our registration system consists of scenes that have been geometrically and radiometrically corrected, as well as preprocessed for detection of clouds and cloud shadows. Such preprocessed scenes are then georegistered relative to a database of Landsat chips. This paper describes the entire registration process, including the use of landmark chips, feature extraction performed by an overcomplete wavelet representation, and feature matching using statistically robust techniques. Knowing the approximate longitudes and latitudes or the UTM coordinates of the four corners of each incoming scene, a subset of the chips that represent landmarks included in the scene are selected to perform the registration. For each of these selected landmark chips, a corresponding window is extracted from the incoming scene, and each chip-window pair is registered using a robust wavelet feature-matching methodology. Based on the transformations from the chip-window pairs, a global transformation is then computed for the entire scene using a variant of a robust least median of squares estimator. Empirical results of this registration process, which provided subpixel accuracy for several multitemporal scenes from different study areas, are presented and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The problem of temperature and spectral emissivity assessment from hyperspectral remotely sensed data is discussed with reference to monitoring of active fires and hot targets. A new algorithm, called similar pixel addition, was developed, which allows us to retrieve the temperature of burning areas by employing spectral data collected at thermal infrared (TIR) wavelengths. The new algorithm resolves the uncertainty connected with temperature-emissivity separation assuming a slow spatial variation of emissivity, hence reducing the number of unknowns involved in the inversion of a couple of similar pixels at once. Performance of this procedure is thoroughly discussed and compared with results from two other algorithms operating in the TIR and shortwave infrared spectral ranges. This paper shows results obtained applying the new algorithm to hyperspectral images gathered by the Multispectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer in Northern Italy (Alps) over a natural fire that broke out in July 1999. Since Chavez proposed the highpass filtering procedure to fuse multispectral and panchromatic images, several fusion methods have been developed based on the same principle: to extract from the panchromatic image spatial detail information to later inject it into the multispectral one. In this paper, we present new fusion alternatives based on the same concept, using the multiresolution wavelet decomposition to execute the detail extraction phase and the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) and principal component analysis (PCA) procedures to inject the spatial detail of the panchromatic image into the multispectral one. The multiresolution wavelet decomposition has been performed using both decimated and undecimated algorithms and the resulting merged images compared both spectral and spatially. These fusion methods, as well as standard IHS-, PCA-, and wavelet-based methods have been used to merge Systeme Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) 4 XI and SPOT 4 M images with a ratio 4: 1. We have estimated the validity of each fusion method by analyzing, visually and quantitatively, the quality of the resulting fused images. The methodological approaches proposed in this paper result in merged images with improved quality with respect to those obtained by standard IHS, PCA, and standard wavelet-based fusion methods. For both proposed fusion methods, better results are obtained when an undecimated algorithm is used to perform the multiresolution wavelet decomposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
