Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compliance of Jordanian nurses with ventilator‐associated pneumonia prevention guidelines and the barriers to compliance. Method: A descriptive, cross‐sectional design was used. A convenience sample of 294 nurses from nine hospitals in Jordan completed a self‐reported questionnaire. Results: According to the study compliance categories, 45.6% of the participants reported 'insufficient compliance,' 24.8% 'weak compliance' and 29.6% 'sufficient compliance.' Nurses with more experience and previous education on ventilator‐associated pneumonia reported higher compliance scores than their counterparts with less experience and no previous education. Nurses reported several barriers that limited their own compliance, such as lack of education, lack of policies and protocols, lack of resources and the shortage of staff. Conclusion: The compliance of nursing staff with the prevention guidelines was poor. Applying tailored educational programs may help improve their level of compliance. These programs must target new graduate nurses and be conducted in those hospitals with limited resources. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is known about this topic? Background: Nurses working in emergency units are in direct contact with traumatic events. Trauma effects do not solely affect patients and their caregivers and, rather, extend to secondarily influence nurses themselves. Secondary exposure to trauma may result in symptoms similar to symptoms experienced by the patient themselves. No previous study investigated the secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses in Jordan. Purpose To identify prevalence, predictors, and consequences of secondary traumatic stress among nurses working in emergency departments. Method: A descriptive correlation design was utilized to collect data using self‐report questionnaires from 202 nurses working at eight emergency departments in Jordan. Findings The study revealed that almost half of the sample reported high to severe levels of secondary traumatic stress. The analyses showed that nurses who demonstrated lower empathy (P =.016) and greater coping capacity (P <.001) tended to develop more secondary traumatic stress. Organizational factors were not significant predictors of secondary traumatic stress. Conclusion: A significant proportion of emergency nurses suffer secondary traumatic stress that is found also to be associated with psychical factors. Emergency nurses need to consider the consequences of secondary traumatic stress on their health and quality of care provided. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Emergency nurses are susceptible to develop secondary traumatic stress due to nature of their work and being repetitively exposed to traumatic patients.No studies have examined existence of secondary traumatic stress among nurses in Jordan and in the Arab countries.The literature has contradicting findings on factors that can enhance or attenuate development of secondary traumatic stress symptoms. Aim: To assess the prevalence and identify the predictors of breakfast skipping among 14‐ to 16‐year‐old adolescents in Jordan, focusing on mother‐related variables. Background: Breakfast is an essential meal across one's entire lifespan and especially important during the adolescent years. The practice of skipping breakfast has become so prevalent among adolescents that it is now a well‐documented nutritional problem. Design A descriptive cross‐sectional correlational design. Methods: A proportional cluster stratified sampling protocol was used to select 1896 adolescents and their mothers (1013) during the period of March to June 2016. A self‐reported questionnaire was used to collect data on breakfast‐skipping rates, the perceived reasons for this behavior, the perceived importance of consuming breakfast, and maternal encouragement of breakfast consumption. Results: The prevalence of breakfast skipping was 34.3% among adolescents and 21.5% among their mothers. A significant association was found between breakfast skipping among adolescents and their mothers (χ2 [1, n = 998] = 37.90, P =.001). Maternal encouragement of breakfast consumption, gender, and adolescent perception of the importance of this meal were found to be significant predictors of adolescent breakfast skipping. Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of involving mothers in developing nutritional health plans aimed at promoting regular breakfast consumption among adolescents. Regular breakfast intake has been linked to positive benefits for adolescent health, including lower risk for obesity and fewer biomarkers of chronic illness.The practice of skipping breakfast is highly prevalent among adolescents, both in Jordan and across the globe.Parental eating habits and attitudes influence adolescent eating behaviors and attitudes. For both groups, lack of appetite was reported as the main reason (39%) for skipping breakfast.The interrelationships found between maternal and adolescent variables related to breakfast consumption highlight the pivotal role of mothers in promoting this practice. When mothers valued eating breakfast, so did their adolescent children, a relation that translated into lower rates of breakfast skipping among the adolescents.Maternal encouragement of breakfast consumption, the adolescents' perceived value of this practice, and their gender proved significant predictors of breakfast skipping behavior. The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of demographic variables, organizational commitment levels, perception of health and quality of work on turnover intentions. A self-reported cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from Jordanian registered nurses who were working between June 2011 and November 2011. The findings showed strong effects of the quality of work, perception of health and normative organizational commitments on turnover intentions. This study sheds the light on the important work outcomes in health-care organizations. Introduction: Using technology in the clinical setting where clinical alarms frequently occur, resulting in many false alarms, which is called alarm fatigue, alarm fatigue may increase nurses' distraction, and that might negatively affect patient safety. Objective: This study aimed to assess alarm fatigue among oncology nurses in Jordan. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used in a non-profit specialized cancer center. A self-reported questionnaire was answered by nurses who participated in the study. Results: A total of 222 questionnaires were analyzed with a more than 95% response rate. More than half of the sample (60.4%) were females. The participants were young nurses with a mean age of 25.18 ± 3.33 years. The total mean score of alarm fatigue was 31.62 ± 7.14 on a scale ranging from zero to 52. Post-hoc analysis showed that the palliative unit (25.73 ± 7.22) and emergency room (28.73 ± 6.62) had low scores of total mean alarm fatigue than remaining area of practice, such as the ICU (33.92 ± 6.99); p -value:.004. Conclusion: Alarm fatigue is a global issue affecting many practice areas. An educational program is recommended for nurses to learn how to deal with alarm fatigue. Background: An essential element for offering high‐quality care in the intensive care units (ICUs) is the intraprofessional collaboration among nurses, which facilitates the exchange of knowledge and information and hence improves performance. More research is needed to understand the relationship between the nurse–nurse collaboration and job performance in the ICUs due to the multidimensionality of both concepts, the complexity of the ICU environment, and the lack of studies. Aim: To examine the relationship between nurse–nurse collaboration and self‐perceived nurse performance among Jordanian nurses in ICUs. Design: Descriptive, correlational cross‐sectional design was used. Methods: Data were collected through an online survey including the demographic questionnaire, the nurse–nurse collaboration scale, and six‐dimensions scale for nursing performance. Results: In total, 155 critical care nurses participated (response rate = 46.97%). Self‐perceived job performance was significantly associated with gender (t = −3.189, P =.002), age (r = −0.301, P <.01), workplace (F = 28.20, P =.001), the type of ICU (F = 17.70, P =.001), and the number of assigned patients (r = 0.407, P <.01). Among all nurse–nurse collaboration subscales, only the conflict management subscale was an independent significant predictor of self‐perceived nursing performance (t = 3.06, B = 3.066, P =.003). Conclusions: Effective conflict management is associated with better nurse performance, which could ultimately improve patient care in ICUs. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Conflict resolution is an important dimension of optimal nurse–nurse collaboration and has an important effect on nursing performance. Aim: The aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between work engagement and perceived organisational support and self‐efficacy among registered nurses in Jordanian hospitals. Background: Nurses constitute the backbone of the health care system. Work engagement among nurses is critical due to its various positive outcomes: it enhances job satisfaction, job performance, organisation commitment and emotional health. According to the job demand–resource model, perceived organisational support and self‐efficacy increase work engagement. Method: A cross‐sectional, descriptive and correlational design and multistage cluster sampling were implemented. A total of 186 registered nurses were recruited. Self‐administered questionnaires were used to collect data from the participants. Results: Nurses showed an average level of work engagement. The dedication subscale showed the highest score among the three subscales representing work engagement. The results showed that perceived organisational support and self‐efficacy were positively correlated with work engagement (p <.01). Conclusion: Perceived organisational support and self‐efficacy correlated positively with work engagement. Implications for nursing management: An effort should be made to provide a supportive work environment by offering training programmes, sufficient job resources and positive feedback, which, in turn, improve nurses' work attitudes, self‐efficacy, perception of the work environment and intention to stay in a health organisation. Background: There are adverse side effects associated with handling chemotherapy; however, using safe-handling precautions can minimize or prevent these potential effects. Despite availability of international guidelines for chemotherapy handling, adherence to precautions is below expectations. This study examined knowledge of safe-handling precautions among a sample of oncology nurses in Jordon. Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed that included a convenience sample of 153 oncology nurses. Oncology nurses from two hospitals completed the Chemotherapy Handling Questionnaire. Descriptive analysis, Spearman rank correlation coefficients, and regression analyses were performed to determine the predictors of precaution use when handling hazardous drugs among participants. Findings: We observed that age, number of patients for whom the worker administered chemotherapy per day, the number of patients receiving chemotherapy per day in the participant's work unit, nurses' knowledge about safe-handling precautions, perceived risk, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, organization influence/workplace safety climate, conflict of interest, and interpersonal influences were predictors of use of safe-handling precautions (adjusted R 2 =.66, p <.001). Conclusion/Application for Practice: Several predictors for using safe-handling precautions were identified. Purpose: Health care professionals, particularly nurses, are considered a vulnerable group to experience acute stress disorder (ASD) and subsequent psychological distress amid COVID‐19 pandemic. This study aims to establish the prevalence of acute stress disorder and predictors of psychological distress among Jordanian nurses. Methods: A quantitative, cross‐sectional, descriptive and comparative design was used. Data were collected using a Web‐based survey. A total of 448 Jordanian nurses (73% females) completed and returned the study questionnaire. Results: The majority of nurses (64%) are experiencing ASD due to the COVID‐19 pandemic and thus are at risk for PTSD predisposition. More than one‐third of nurses (41%) are also suffering significant psychological distress. Among our sample, age, ASD and coping self‐efficacy significantly predicted psychological distress. More specifically, younger nurses are more prone to experience psychological distress than older ones. While higher scores on ASD showed more resultant psychological distress, coping self‐efficacy was a protective factor. Conclusion: Given that individuals who suffer from ASD are predisposed to PTSD, follow‐up with nurses to screen for PTSD and referral to appropriate psychological services is pivotal. Coping self‐efficacy is found to ameliorate the effect of psychological distress on nurses' traumatic experience. Such findings warrant intensive efforts from health care institutions to provide psychosocial support services for nurses and ongoing efforts to screen them for traumatic and psychological distress symptoms. Implications for Nursing Management: Nursing leaders and managers are in the forefront of responding to the unique needs of their workforces during the COVID‐19 crisis. They need to implement stress‐reduction strategies for nurses through providing consecutive rest days, rotating allocations of complex patients, arranging support services and being accessible to staff. They also need to ensure nurses' personal safety through securing and providing personal safety measures and undertake briefings to ensure their staff's physical and mental well‐being, as well as providing referrals to appropriate psychological services. Occupational stress is a major problem for healthcare providers, with some professionals experiencing higher numbers of stressful situations than others. Although it is difficult to eliminate stress in professionals' daily lives, providing social support can lower psychological distress symptoms. This study aims to investigate the relationship between occupational stress and social support, and the effects of social support on psychological distress symptoms of healthcare professionals. A cross‐sectional descriptive design was utilized. Self‐administered questionnaires were completed by a convenience sample of 211 participants (physicians, nurses, and pharmacists) from a Jordanian hospital. Bivariate analyses were used to examine the relationships between the study variables. Multiple regression analyses were used to determine if occupational stress, demographic characteristics, and social support predict depression, anxiety, and stress. Results showed that healthcare professionals with more social support showed less depression than those with a lower score of social support. Females had higher scores of depression and anxiety than males. Pharmacists had significantly higher occupational stress than both nurses and physicians. Occupational stress negatively influences healthcare professionals' mental health. To improve the productivity and psychological wellbeing of healthcare professionals, occupational stress should be diminished by implementing effective management approaches to facilitate social support for healthcare professionals. Aim: The aims of this study were to (a) examine the levels of nurses' political efficacy and involvement in health policy; and (b) explore the relationships between political efficacy, involvement in health policy and participants' background variables. Background: Nurses as citizens and health care providers have the right to express their opinions and beliefs in regard to issues that are concerned with the health care system or the public health domain. Methods: A descriptive, cross‐sectional design using was utilized. A self‐administered questionnaire (Political Efficacy Scale & Involvement in Health Policy Scale) was completed by a convenience sample of 302 nurses. Results: The results of this study showed low levels of involvement in health policy and political efficacy, and a positive weak correlation between political efficacy and involvement in health policy. The perceived level of political efficacy was associated positively with nurses' age and experience. Conclusions: Nurse administrators and managers may empower, support and encourage nurses to enhance their involvement in health policy. Implications for nursing management: The findings have implications for nursing leaders and administrators to design appropriate strategies to enhance nurses' involvement in health policy development. Background. Nurses in critical care units were found to have severe symptoms of work-related stress, with the newly-graduated nurses in critical care units found to have higher prevalence of work-related stress symptoms compared to experienced nurses. Objectives. To explore the causes of work-related stress among newly-graduated nurses in critical care units. Method. This study used a quantitative descriptive cross-sectional design, using self-reported questionnaires. A total of 220 participants were conveniently recruited. Results. Participants reported high level of work-related stress. While the highest mean score was reported for "workload "(M= 2.6/3, SD= 0.3), the lowest mean score was reported for "relationships and conflict" (M= 1.2/3, SD= 0.7). Many significant differences were noticed in the work-related stress based on participants' demographics. Discussion. This study underlines the significance of developing nursing policies concerning stress relief aiming at improving nursing caring performance. Providing training courses for nurses on effective response to stressful work situations is highly recommended during their orientation period, which may be helpful to prevent the negative consequences of stress on the newly-graduated nurses in the critical care units. Medication administration is a critical task of nurses that, if not done appropriately, can lead to fatal errors. New technologies, including barcode medication administration, are intended to decrease medication errors and enhance verification of medication‐administration rights. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effect of introducing barcode medication administration on nurses' satisfaction and identified correlates of nurses' satisfaction with barcode medication administration. A descriptive, cross‐sectional design using self‐reported questionnaires was utilized to recruit 207 nurses from three public hospitals. Participants reported being moderately satisfied with barcode medication administration, especially with its efficacy and safety aspects. Their satisfaction had a significant negative correlation with their age, nursing experience, and experience using barcode medication administration, and a significant positive correlation with barcode medication‐administration training satisfaction, computer competence, comfort with using barcode medication administration, and perceived job productivity using barcode medication administration. This study provides important information about Jordanian nurses' satisfaction with barcode medication‐administration technology and provides greater understanding of different clinical correlates to barcode medication‐administration satisfaction. It is recommended that effective barcode medication‐administration training and computer skills training be provided prior to establishing barcode medication administration in hospitals and that the safety features of barcode medication administration be integrated in clinical education and training. Abstract: Aim: This study aimed to investigate nurses’ perceptions of the nursing work environment in Jordanian hospitals. Background: Previous research has indicated a strong relationship between nurses’ work environment and their satisfaction at work. However, little is known about the situation in Jordan. Method: A cross‐sectional and descriptive design was used. A sample of 500 nurses was recruited. The study was conducted using the Individual Workload Perception Revised scale (IWPS‐R). Results: A sum of 382 out of 500 nurses from three health care sectors in Jordan responded to the questionnaires (response rate = 76.4%). The results indicate that nurses working in the public hospitals had significantly better perceptions about their work environment than nurses working in private and university hospitals. Older nurses with lower academic qualifications are more likely to be satisfied with their work. Furthermore, nurses who have good perceptions of support from their manager and peers, and a manageable workload are more likely to stay in their jobs. Conclusion: The public hospitals are currently considered a more suitable milieu for nurses in Jordan. Other health care sectors should work to enhance nurses’ working conditions. Aim: Explore the potential of a part‐time work option for nurses as a strategy for managing domestic markets in Jordan by examining perceptions of working nurses and nursing students in the context of current social and cultural variables. Background: Unemployment among Jordanian nurses has become a reality in recent years. However, labor markets literature in nursing rarely studies what kind of policy responses should occur during a surplus of nurses. Methods: A cross‐sectional design structured the study. The perceptions of nurses and students were measured through a questionnaire developed specifically for the purpose of this exploratory study. Results: Both nurses (n = 51) and students (n = 56) supported the introduction of the new suggested part‐time option. However, students were more willing to start working or transfer into part‐time work, take payment on hourly basis, and support colleagues to transfer into part‐time work. Different solutions were also suggested by participants. Discussion: The results were useful for providing the foundational data to further study the viability of a part‐time work option for Jordanian nurses. The results show how optimistic current and future Jordanian nurses are regarding this employment option. For countries that may need to diversify their employment models due to excess supply of nurses and to address gender imbalances, this work may help inform policy development. Implications for nurses: Both employed and unemployed nurses will benefit if health care managers consider its application. The flexibility of this option may help improve the quality of life of many nurses. Implications for health policy: The results of this study provide nursing leaders and managers with foundational evidence that may be applicable in the Jordanian health sector. Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine associations among the nursing work environment, nurse job satisfaction, and intent to stay for nurses who practice in hospitals in Jordan. Design A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional survey design was used. Methods Data were collected through survey questionnaires distributed to 650 registered nurses (RNs) who worked in three hospitals in Jordan. The self-report questionnaire consisted of three instruments and demographic questions. The instruments were the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI), the McCain Intent to Stay scale, and Quinn and Shepard's (1974) Global Job Satisfaction survey. Descriptive statistics were calculated for discrete measures of demographic characteristics of the study participants. Multivariate linear regression models were used to explore relationships among the nursing work environment, job satisfaction, and intent to stay, adjusting for unit type. Findings There was a positive association between nurses' job satisfaction and the nursing work environment ( t = 6.42, p < .001). For each one-unit increase in the total score of the PES-NWI, nurses' average job satisfaction increased by 1.3 points, controlling for other factors. Overall, nurses employed in public hospitals were more satisfied than those working in teaching hospitals. The nursing work environment was positively associated with nurses' intent to stay ( t = 4.83, p < .001). The Intent to Stay score increased by 3.6 points for every one-unit increase in the total PES-NWI score on average. The highest Intent to Stay scores were reported by nurses from public hospitals. Conclusions The work environment was positively associated with nurses' intent to stay and job satisfaction. More attention should be paid to create positive work environments to increase job satisfaction for nurses and increase their intent to stay. Clinical Relevance Hospital and nurse managers and healthcare policymakers urgently need to create satisfactory work environments supporting nursing practice in order to increase nurses' job satisfaction and intent to stay. Aims and objectives To explore the awareness of the incident reporting system, incident reporting practices and barriers to reporting incidents among Jordanian staff nurses and physicians in accredited and nonaccredited hospitals. Background Reporting medical incidents is an important element of patient safety enhancement and quality of care improvement and it should be an integral part of the organisational culture. Design A descriptive exploratory survey was used for the present study. Methods A modified version of the Incident Reporting Questionnaire was used to collect data from 307 nurses and 144 physicians at seven hospitals (four accredited and three not accredited) in Jordan. The response rate was 28·8% for nurses and 58·8% for physicians. Results Nurses were more aware of the incident reporting system than physicians. Physicians were less likely to report any incident on 50% or more of occasions. The major three barriers to reporting incidents were believing that there was no point in reporting near misses, lack of feedback and fear of disciplinary actions. Conclusion The study showed significant differences between nurses in accredited and nonaccredited hospitals regarding barriers to reporting incidents and reporting practices. ABSTRACT Background Poor nursing adherence to evidence-based guidelines has negative consequences leading to higher mortality rates, delayed recovery and longer length of stay. Evidence-based practice has the potential to minimize complications and discrepancies between nurses. Aim This study aimed to assess nurses' practice and perception of their knowledge and responsibility in relation to enteral nutrition ( EN) in the critically ill. Design and methods This descriptive correlational design was applied to nurses working in intensive care units ( ICUs) from three health care sectors in Jordan (Governmental, Military and Private sectors). Nurses were recruited using a stratified sampling technique. A pre-prepared questionnaire focusing on nurses' practice and perception towards EN was used. Results A total of 253 ICU nurses completed the questionnaire. Nurses revealed a tendency to undertake nutritional care despite the recognition clinical nutrition is a secondary role. In terms of nursing processes, nurses showed greater levels of knowledge and responsibility for 'preventing complications' and 'evaluation' more than 'assessment' and 'identifying goals'. Nurses inadequately assess both gastric residuals and tube placement before feeding. Diarrhoea was the most frequent complication followed by abdominal pain, vomiting, tube dislodgment and weight loss. However, nurses realized that the incidences of complications is less likely when applying evidence-based protocol. Conclusion It is necessary to establish a preliminary assessment for patients' nutritional needs prior to using EN. Aspiration reduction measures are still deficient and need further attention. An evidence-based protocol for EN should be adopted in the critically ill. Relevance to clinical practice This article provides insight into the current practice of Jordanian intensive care nurses in different health care sectors. Rationale, aims and objectives Understanding sources of knowledge used in everyday practice is very helpful in improving the quality of health care services. There is a consensus in the literature that nurses mostly relied in their practice on experiential knowledge gained through their interactions with other members of health care professionals and patients. The general aim of this study is to explore the sources of knowledge Jordanian registered nurses use during their practice. Method A descriptive correlational design was used to collect data from 539 Jordanian registered nurses from 10 hospitals using a self-administered questionnaire. Results The mean year of experience of the sample was 7.08 years. Of the 615 questionnaires distributed, 555 were returned. This yields a response rate of 87.6%. Results revealed that the top five ranked sources used by Jordanian registered nurses include: the information that nurses learned during nursing education, personal experience in nursing over time, what was learned through providing care to patients, information gained through discussion between physicians and nurses about patients, and information from policy and procedure manuals. Conclusion Jordanian registered nurses recognize the value of research and that research utilization (RU) is an important issue and must not be ignored. The study has many implications for practice, education and research. Health care managers and decision makers need to play a more visible and instrumental role in encouraging RU to improve patients' quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International Journal of Nursing Practice 2012; 18: 140-146 Differences between patients' expectations and satisfaction with nursing care in a private hospital in Jordan A descriptive correlation study was conducted to describe the differences between patient expectations and satisfaction with nursing care, and to determine the relationships among patient's satisfaction with nursing care and selected sociodemographic variables. A convenience sample of 250 patients with different medical, surgical and gynaecologic diagnoses was recruited to participate in the study, which was carried out at a private hospital in Amman. Two research instruments and a sociodemographic data form were used for data collection: The Patient Expectations Questionnaire and Patient Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality Questionnaire. The results indicated that patients were more satisfied with technical and ethical aspects of nursing care whereas they were less satisfied with nursing care during the night shift as well as with professional information provided by the nurses. The difference between patients' expectations and satisfaction was statistically significant. Patients' opinions regarding their expectations and their satisfaction with nursing care can be considered as an important opportunity for nurses to plan and implement appropriate strategies that improve the quality of nursing care.
