In China, master's students in humanities and social sciences (HSS) are becoming the main target of Chinese-language predatory journals. Existing research has not paid enough attention to why these students publish papers in Chinese-language predatory journals. This research interviewed 30 HSS master's students with different majors using semi-structured interviews and Grounded Theory to analyze the data; it found that research discrimination, research context, self-awareness, and individual demand are the main reasons why students publish papers in Chinese-language predatory journals. This study provides the following suggestions in an effort to solve the problem of Chinese-language predatory journals. First, the Chinese government should draw up a blacklist of Chinese-language predatory journals. Second, the research evaluation departments of Chinese universities and research institutions should evaluate the research results of HSS master's students based on this list. Third, Chinese universities or scientific research institutions should strengthen the training of HSS master tutors and increase their awareness of Chinese-language predatory journals. And finally, Chinese HSS master's students should be taught about the hazards of Chinese-language predatory journals in research integrity and ethics courses, and refuse to publish papers in Chinese-language predatory journals.

The use of respondent quotes to headline qualitative research papers is a popular literary device found in many academic journals. This practice has increased over the last four decades and now appears normalised within qualitative research writing. This article provides a critical analysis of this trend in academic writing and concomitant publishing. Content and framework analyses of 40 papers employing this literary device to summarise the respective studies identified (i) a lack of methodological rigor, (ii) incomplete analysis, (iii) an overall mis-representation of the wider qualitative dataset, and (iv) possible investigator bias associated with using respondent quotes as titles of qualitative research papers. This article questions the credibility of purposely selecting a single experience that reduces the wider collective experience into one deterministic statement. This article contends that such practice is antithetical to the principles of qualitative research. Recommendations are provided to better monitor this practice throughout the academy.

Introduction: Current guidelines recommend prophylactic treatment of hemophilia B with the missing coagulation factor IX, either with standard half-life or extended half-life products. Extended half-life products have half-lives three to six times longer than the former, allowing a reduction in the number of weekly injections and therefore, potentially impacting on treatment adherence and quality of life. Albutrepenonacog alfa is an extended half-life fusion protein of coagulation factor IX with recombinant human albumin, indicated for both on-demand and prophylactic treatment for bleeding in patients with hemophilia B of all ages.Areas covered: The authors review the clinical and pharmacokinetic characteristics of albutrepenonacog alfa, as well as the available information regarding trough levels and real-world evidence. Given the availability of other factor IX products in the market, indirect comparisons of clinical and pharmacokinetic characteristics are presented.Expert opinion: The authors exhibit their expert opinion on which patient profiles are candidates for prophylactic treatment with albutrepenonacog alfa, and on the management of patients in terms of dosing, regimens of administration and protocols for switching the treatment.

This research compared the ability of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and the altruism framework (AM) to predict paper-recycling behavior. It was comprised of formative research and a major survey. Data collected from 628 undergraduate students in Thailand were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results showed that TPB was superior to AM in predicting paper recycling. Perceived behavioral control was the only significant determinant from the TPB; personal norms alone significantly predicted behavior in AM. A communication approach is proposed to reinforce change in sociopsychological factors that could lead to a long-term paper-recycling commitment.

Overdiagnosis is a growing problem worldwide. Overdiagnosis is the diagnosis of deviations, abnormalities, risk factors, and pathologies that in themselves would never cause symptoms (this applies only to risk factors and pathology), would never lead to morbidity, and would never be the cause of death. Overdiagnosis is often misinterpreted as overutilization or overtreatment. Overutilization, overtreatment, and overdiagnosis are interrelated but three distinct topics. Overutilization (establishment of standard practice that does not provide net benefit) does not have to lead to overdiagnosis or overtreatment, but the risk exists. Treatment of overdiagnosed conditions is one category of overtreatment. Another is when the best available evidence shows that the treatment has no beneficial effect. Overdiagnosis can be caused by overutilization and is nearly always followed by overtreatment. Treating an overdiagnosed condition cannot improve the patient’s prognosis, and therefore can only be harmful. At the individual level, we can never be sure if the person is overdiagnosed. However, experiences and thoughts of individuals who are most likely overdiagnosed can be explored in qualitative interviews, e.g. men with a small screening detected abdominal aortic aneurism. In longitudinal surveys, the degree and length of psychosocial consequences associated with overdiagnosis can be estimated. In high-quality RCTs, the magnitude of overdiagnosis can be quantified, and in cohort studies, we can find indications of overdiagnosis. Finally, we can conduct research about the consequences of overdiagnosis in at least eight different areas: financial strain, hassles/inconveniences, medical costs, opportunity costs, physical harms, psychological harms, societal costs and work-related costs.

Lack of participation from staff when developing information and communication technologies (ICT) has been shown to lead to negative consequences and might be one explanation for failure. Management during development processes has rarely been empirically studied, especially when introducing ICT systems in a municipality context.To describe and interpret experiences of the management during change processes where ICT was introduced among staff and managers in elderly care.A qualitative interpretive method was chosen for this study and content analysis for analyzing the interviews."Clear focus-unclear process" demonstrated that focus on ICT solutions was clear but the process of introducing the ICT was not. "First-line managers receiving a system of support" gave a picture of the first-line manager as not playing an active part in the projects. First-line managers and staff described "Low power to influence" when realizing that for some reasons, they had not contributed in the change projects. "Low confirmation" represented the previous and present feelings of staff not being listened to. Lastly, "Reciprocal understanding" pictures how first-line managers and staff, although having some expectations on each other, understood each other's positions.Empowerment could be useful in creating an organization where critical awareness and reflection over daily practice becomes a routine.

The writing process has traditionally been seen ‘as a lonely journey’ to typify the lack of support that students experience for writing outside the classroom. This paper examines an attempt of The Writing Portal (TWP), a supplementary online writing platform, to support students’ writing needs throughout the five stages of the writing process, viz., planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Social constructivist principles underpin TWP, which was designed to engender collaboration amongst its student participants. Not only does TWP provide links to evaluated Internet resources and a writing portfolio, but it also features collaboration tools such as the Group Forum, chat, a writing portfolio, a private messaging system, and a comment function for pages or articles created. Thus, it is very much akin to a ‘one-stop centre’ for academic writing within a flexible and supportive environment. This paper highlights the relationship between reflective practice and staff mindfulness, situation and movement awareness, and person-centredness during mobility care in nursing homes. An overview of relevant decision-making theory is followed by discussion of the place of reflective practice in optimizing mobility care. Two contrasting case scenarios, derived from observations of mobility care during a previous qualitative study, are used to illustrate and contrast how mindfulness, situation awareness and reflection-in-action may enable person-centredness. Implications for training designed to improve person-centredness during mobility care are considered. Training in situation and movement awareness, combined with observations and collaborative reflective practice, may provide a format for coaches and peer leaders to develop mindfulness and person-centredness of care staff during mobility care.

The history of nurse education is strongly grounded in the apprenticeship-style of training that pre-dated the delivery of nurse education in the higher education sector. The apprenticeship model was essentially premised on a belief that students of nursing learned by being exposed to the clinical environment, and being supported to learn on-the-job (Mannix, Faga, Beale, & Jackson, 2006). Because of this and despite the many dedicated nurse teachers who worked within hospital-based schools of nurs- ing, for many years, nurse education was barely problematised; nor was it the subject of particular debate, scrutiny or interrogation.The move to transfer nurse education raised the profile of nurse education as an issue for debate and discussion in the literature, and the transfer itself has been the catalyst for a strong and growing discourse on issues around nurse education. Several specialist journals focus on nurse education, and tend to embrace under- graduate, postgraduate and continuing edu- cational issues. Even general journals such as Contemporary Nurse attract quite a number of papers that focus on nurse education and related matters. However, despite the energies and focus on educational issues, concerns are still regularly raised about the nature and quality of nurse edu- cation (Jackson & Daly, 2008), particularly in the media (see for example Shaun, 2013; Van den Berg, 2011). In this editorial, we consider data-based papers recently published in the journal on undergraduate nurse education (see Table 1), contemplate some of the strengths and weaknesses of this combined discourse, and rec- ommend some ways forward.A total of 29 data-based papers with a focus on undergraduate nurse education were published in Contemporary Nurse between 2007-2012. Studies were from Australia (N = 16), Australia/UK (N = 1), Hong Kong (N= 1), Turkey (N= 3), New Zealand (N = 3), Iran (N = 1), Ireland (N = 2), Taiwan (N = 1) and USA (N = 1). The major- ity of studies were single-site (N = 24), with only five involving more than one research site. Almost half of the studies reported survey or question- naire data (N = 13), eight studies used qualitative approaches (e.g., ethnographic, Heideggerian, and data collection such as interviews, participant observation etc.), four were identified as mixed method studies, and four used other approaches (e.g., quasi-experimental, longitudinal, evaluative and review of model). The highest sample size for the survey/questionnaire was 605, and this was a multi-site study conducted in Australia, the lowest questionnaire sample size was 14 and this was a single-site study in Australia. Sample sizes for qualitative studies ranged from 6 (Australia) to 54 (New Zealand). Regarding the aims of the paper, these were diverse but more than one-third (N = 10) were directly related to students' clinical placements.Clinical learning in nursing, as a practice- based discipline, is a critical element of under- graduate education courses (Mannix, Wilkes, & Luck, 2009). Not surprisingly, clinical expe- riences of undergraduate students throughout their course continue to be an ongoing focus of research. Some of these papers (Grealish & Ranse, 2009; Happell & Gough, 2007; James & Chapman, 2009) focus on the experiences of students during their first clinical experience, either in the course or in a particular clinical setting. Final-year students' clinical experiences have been the focus of research around speciality clinical placements (Coyne & Needham, 2012), medication management (Honey & Lim, 2008), and the sense of belonging in the clinical setting (Levett-Jones, Lathlean, McMillan, & Higgins, 2007). Other research around clinical practicum has explored assertiveness levels among nursing students (Unal, Hisar, & Gorgulu, 2012), and interprofessional learning (Conway, 2009). This study illustrates the ways in which the practices of two instructors in an arts-based, after-school literacy program serving Somali youth provide insights for teaching urban immigrant students. It draws on a qualitative self-study that examines the experiences and practices of the researchers in the development and implementation of a program called Pen 2 Paper 2 Power. It illuminates the difficulties of using culturally relevant pedagogy with immigrant youth, given the complexity of immigrant youth cultures, formed at the intersection of ethnic culture, youth culture, and popular culture. The research also examines the pedagogical implications of practicing culturally relevant hip-hop pedagogy with urban immigrant youth.

Objective. The Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI) was launched in 1998 to address the disproportionate rates of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted an evaluation to assess the influence of MAI in four communities, and the extent to which these communities increased their capacity to meet the HIV prevention needs of racial and ethnic minorities. Design. Retrospective data were collected annually through individual interviews over three years. Individual interviews were conducted with community stakeholders across the three waves of data collection. Data were analyzed using standardized qualitative methods including codebook development, coding, inter-coder agreement assessments, and data interpretation. Introduction: Qualitative research related to coping with miscarriage is increasing. However, evidence which examines the coping strategies that may facilitate adjustment to miscarriage is scant. Using qualitative methods, we examined both the emotional outcomes for women after miscarriage, and the strategies identified by women as facilitating their mental health and well-being.Conclusion: Miscarriage may be a traumatic experience for many women, however, support and acknowledgement from the community and adequate medical care appears to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. Overall, the results showed that social norms, attitudes and expectations greatly affected how women coped with miscarriage. This paper seeks to identify the common principles underlying evaluation methods based on different paradigms. Although all observations are coloured by the values of the observer, there are some objective realities of which approximate knowledge can be gained. All methods have to overcome the problems of avoiding bias in observation and ascribing cause. It is argued that progress in outcome evaluation will be achieved by concentration on shared problems rather than on contested paradigms.

Objectives: It is well recognised that the results of research evidence are frequently not implemented in clinical practice. Intervention studies have shown that doctors' habits are relatively resistant to change. A qualitative approach may provide new insights to understand the barriers and facilitators to change, and the role that evidence plays in the decision-making of general practitioners. We sought to understand general practitioners' perspectives on facilitators and hindrances to the implementation of evidence-based change in general practice and their attitudes towards the concept of evidence-based medicine.Method: Thematic analysis of 44 in-depth interviews with general practitioners from four health authorities. For gerontological educators, topics such as mortality, loss, and end-of-life issues often emerge or are central in their courses. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has raised our awareness of loss and death on a global scale and teaching during the pandemic has raised questions about how educators, communities, or systems of higher education can support students’ learning while simultaneously experiencing losses during intense times of uncertainty. In this mixed-method study of 246 students enrolled in undergraduate thanatology courses, we explored their levels of death anxiety and their experiences with pandemic-related losses. We found that students’ death anxiety increased significantly during the pandemic, in comparison to the years prior (p < .001). We also conducted a content analysis in a subset of students’ written narratives (n = 44) regarding their pandemic experiences. We identified three themes. Participants desired: (a) more flexibility from instructors, no questions asked; (b) more compassion and understanding; and (c) specific, targeted support resources. The voices of students were filtered through the authors’ interpretation as educators to provide several teaching recommendations that support student learning during challenging times. The recommendations align with a trauma-informed approach, given the high rates of death anxiety and ambiguous loss among students, and have immediate implications for educators teaching during the pandemic, and for years to come. Finally, we also advocate for more university and community-based thanatology, and gerontology education offerings in general, to help normalize conversations about death, loss, and bereavement.

Background: Recent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases have affected members of religious communities. While major religions support vaccines, the views of individual clergy who practice and propagate major faith traditions are unclear. Our objective was to explore clergy attitudes toward vaccines and vaccine advocacy. Methods: In 2018–2019, we conducted qualitative interviews with clergy in Colorado and North Carolina. We inductively analyzed transcripts using a grounded theory approach, developing codes iteratively, resolving disagreements by consensus, and identifying themes. Results: We interviewed 16 clergy (1 Buddhist, 3 Catholic, 2 Jewish, 1 Hindu, 1 Islamic, 7 Protestant, and 1 Unity). Analyses yielded seven themes: attitudes toward vaccines, congregational needs, public health climate, perceived responsibility, comfort and competing interests, reported advocacy efforts, and clergy health advocacy goals. Most clergy had positive vaccination attitudes and were open to vaccine advocacy, although discomfort with medical concepts and competing interests in their congregations influenced whether many had chosen to advocate for vaccines. Over half reported promoting vaccination in various contexts. Conclusions: In our sample, U.S. clergy held complex attitudes toward vaccines, informed by experience and social norms as much as religious beliefs or Scriptures. Clergy may be open to vaccine advocacy, but a perceived lack of relevance in their faith communities or a lack of medical expertise may limit their advocacy efforts in diverse contexts. Amidst growing vaccine hesitancy, pediatricians could partner with clergy in their communities, answer questions about vaccines, raise awareness of recent outbreaks, and empower clergy in joint educational events.

The use of mobile and wireless digital technologies – mobile health (mhealth)- is increasingly been adopted in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to improve data visibility, improve decision-making, and consequently help ensure availability of health commodities in health facilities. In a bid to improve availability of medicines in primary health care facilities, the South African department of Health launched the Stock Visibility Solution (SVS), a mobile application developed for the purpose of capturing and monitoring stock levels of medicines including vaccines using mobile phones. The stock levels of medicines in facilities are usually uploaded to the central stock management system so that managers can act promptly to address stock-out situations. Pilot studies show that the SVS has the potential to reduce stock-outs from occurring. This study aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of the SVS system amongst healthcare workers (HCWs) who are involved with managing stock levels of medicines in primary health care facilities in the Eastern Cape Province. This will help identify potential barriers and facilitators to implementation of the system and contribute to the development of strategies to improve its efficiency and effectiveness. A qualitative research design was employed, including semi-structured interviews with 64 HCWs working in primary health care facilities in the OR Tambo district, Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Data was transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis. Most HCWs understood the SVS as a system for reporting stock levels to managers and conveyed commitment to ensuring the system works. However, they highlighted a number of factors that demotivated efficient usage of the system: inadequate training, staff shortages and high staff turnover, lack of responses from the managers, the extra workload that comes with the system, amongst others. HCWs made various suggestions for how the system might be improved, most pertinently the need for more pharmacists and pharmacy assistants and for these cadres to be primarily in-charge of stock management and the use of the SVS. While HCWs are committed to addressing vaccine stock-outs, they face various barriers to an effective and efficient implementation of the SVS system. We make various recommendations for how these barriers might be addressed.

Children’s life chances when their learning at home is supported collaboratively with early years’ and other educational settings. This original piece of research involved second year trainee teachers who were surveyed about their perceptions about parents and the nature of the partnership relationship. X (2007) previously explored early childhood teachers’ beliefs about teaching and learning. Teachers act in accordance with their beliefs when their knowledge, understanding and confidence of that area is high. Using this assumption, this small scale study explores the student teachers perceptions about parents. To ensure rigour, the study was contextualised in the literature drawing on qualitative research methods including use of open-ended questions. The study considered the participants own experiences of families and parenting and were debriefed following their participation. Contextual Discourse Analysis (CDA) was used to analyse the policy based data for this project. The initial findings suggest that the challenge for new teachers is their own confidence in their potential relationships with parents in relation to their feelings of being qualified but a novice. The four themes that emerged from the data provide a useful framework for the development of a questionnaire for the purpose of investigating this topic further. This is a timely paper, given the proposed changes in the White Paper, Educational Excellence Everywhere (2016), which will impact on the future training of teachers in England.

In the course of our supervisory work over the years, we have noticed that qualitative research tends to evoke a lot of questions and worries, so-called frequently asked questions (FAQs). This series of four articles intends to provide novice researchers with practical guidance for conducting high-quality qualitative research in primary care. By ‘novice’ we mean Master’s students and junior researchers, as well as experienced quantitative researchers who are engaging in qualitative research for the first time. This series addresses their questions and provides researchers, readers, reviewers and editors with references to criteria and tools for judging the quality of qualitative research papers. The second article focused on context, research questions and designs, and referred to publications for further reading. This third article addresses FAQs about sampling, data collection and analysis. The data collection plan needs to be broadly defined and open at first, and become flexible during data collection. Sampling strategies should be chosen in such a way that they yield rich information and are consistent with the methodological approach used. Data saturation determines sample size and will be different for each study. The most commonly used data collection methods are participant observation, face-to-face in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Analyses in ethnographic, phenomenological, grounded theory, and content analysis studies yield different narrative findings: a detailed description of a culture, the essence of the lived experience, a theory, and a descriptive summary, respectively. The fourth and final article will focus on trustworthiness and publishing qualitative research.

peer-reviewed Introduction: Barriers to vaccination and the important role of healthcare professionals (HCPs) in influencing immunization decisions made by parents/patients have been well documented. Little information describes challenges that HCPs face in carrying out their role as vaccinators. Methods: We conducted a focus group study asking HCPs to describe their expectations as frontline vaccinators versus the day-to-day reality they faced. Participants described challenges impacting their ability and motivation as vaccinators, and proposed key solutions to the most important challenges.A total of 75 nurses and physicians (sixteen groups of frontline vaccinators) from the United Kingdom, United States, Germany and India participated in 2 hour focus-group discussions. Results: There was disconnect between how participants viewed their role in preserving population health when they started their career, and the reality of real-world practice today. Challenges experienced and reflected were similar across professional groups and countries. Low patient-level vaccine knowledge, patient miseducation, untimely vaccine information, frequently changing vaccine schedules, time pressures, lack of centralized record systems, pressure to achieve vaccination targets, and in some instances vaccine costs, all impacted the efficiency and enthusiasm of HCPs. Identified solutions by the same providers included improving patient-level information, equipping HCPs with effective information, and practical ways to reduce the vaccination burden by improved administrative processes and centralized recording coupled with delegating vaccinator roles. Conclusion: This focus group gives unique insights into needs of HCPs to fulfill their role as vaccinators. Supporting and equipping vaccinators is critical to the continuing success of vaccination programs and the proposed life-course immunization strategy. (Supplementary Appendix 1)

We sought to understand young men who have sex with men (YMSM) perspectives and preferred features for a mobile health (mHealth) tool designed to facilitate human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. YMSM were recruited on a popular social/sexual networking app to participate in online focus groups. Discussions were designed to elicit what the men would want in a mHealth tool specific for sexual health and HPV. Demographic data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and focus group data were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Forty-eight YMSM participated. Mean age was 23.4 years, and 70.0% reported their race as Black. Qualitative themes included general HPV knowledge and awareness, current patterns in technology use, desired app qualities, and desired app content. Youth described varying levels of HPV knowledge, utilized apps to engage socially, and for travel, banking, gaming, news and entertainment, and few used apps to facilitate personal health or engage with healthcare systems. Participants desired credible, relatable, secure, and easy to use interfaces that provided sexual health and HPV information in a positive context. They described ways to creatively engage and directly connect youth to health providers. We identified a culturally relevant youth driven approach to facilitate HPV vaccination and sexual health among YMSM.

Human papillomavirus is among the most common sexually transmitted infections in the world. Newcomers, defined in Canada as foreign-born individuals who are either immigrants or refugees, but may also include students and undocumented migrants, face numerous barriers to HPV vaccination. This study sought to understand, from the perspective of healthcare providers, barriers and facilitators to HPV vaccination, and recommendations to improve HPV vaccine uptake among newcomers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 healthcare providers between March and April 2018. Data were analyzed at the manifest level using a Qualitative Content Analysis approach. Categories of barriers to vaccination included: access, communication, knowledge, culture, and provider-related factors. Facilitators included targeted health promotion; understanding the relevance of HPV vaccination; trusting the healthcare system; and cultural sensitivity. Two overarching recommendations were to publicly fund the HPV vaccine, and enhance language- and culturally-appropriate health promotion activities. Further research should explore informational desires and needs from the perspective of newcomers to inform strategies to promote equitable HPV vaccine coverage.

Uninsured Latin American immigrant women are at increased risk for vaccine preventable diseases, such as cervical cancer; yet gaps in vaccine coverage persist. The purpose of this study was to explore vaccine-related knowledge, attitudes and decision-making for tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY), and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine among uninsured Latin American immigrant mothers of adolescent daughters. A purposive sample of 30 low-income, uninsured, predominantly Latin-American immigrant mothers of adolescent daughters aged 13–17 were recruited from two academic-community managed health clinics in Virginia. From March–September 2016, data were collected through in-person, semi-structured interviews, in English or Spanish. For data analysis, conventional content analysis was employed. The majority of participants self-identified as Hispanic and had less than a high-school level education. Key themes included: general acceptance of vaccines; associating vaccines with prevention/protection; minimal vaccine hesitancy; and lack of knowledge regarding vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccines recommended for adolescents, and adolescent daughters’ vaccination history. Doctors’ recommendation, school requirements, and the media were key influencers of vaccination. Mothers were the primary decision-maker regarding vaccine uptake among their adolescent daughters. Findings highlight the need for efforts to help uninsured Latin American immigrant mothers better understand vaccines, and provide linkages to affordable, accessible vaccines among under-resourced populations.

BACKGROUND: The present study was aimed at developing a grounded theory on how bibliotherapy influences children with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Participants were selected among the students of four primary schools in Tehran. They received, for 3 years, a special bibliotherapy intervention provided by the public library in cooperation with a team of experts; The bibliotherapy sessions were held once a week during the academic year. 10 teachers, 4 mothers, and 4 agents (librarians) were selected using a purposeful sampling method, and were interviewed using in-depth interviews. RESULT: Data analysis was performed using the grounded theory. ‘Improvement of skills necessary for adjustment to disability’ was identified at the core of grounded theory. CONCLUSION: Bibliotherapy, as a guided learning method and an add-on therapy, based on an accurate identification of intellectually disabled children’s needs and behaviors, providing them with supplemental education materials, empathy, and cooperation among experts from different fields.

Family meals, as acts of domestic food provisioning, are shaped by the competing influences of household resources, food preferences and broader cultural norms around dietary practices. The place of children’s food tastes in family meal practices is particularly complex. Food tastes stand in a reciprocal relationship with family food practices: being both an influence on and a product of them. This paper explores how parents think about and respond to their children’s food preferences in relation to family meal practices. A qualitative study was conducted with residents of Sandwell, UK. The results presented here are based on the responses of nine key participants and their families. Photo elicitation methods generated participant food photo diaries that were used to inform subsequent interviews. A thematic analysis revealed two contrasting ways of incorporating children’s tastes into family meal routines: (1) ‘what we fancy’ and (2) ‘regulated’. The former entails repeatedly consulting and negotiating with children over what to cook for each meal. It is supported by the practical strategies of multiple and individually modified meals. The latter relies upon parents developing a repertoire of meals that ‘work’ for the family. This repertoire is performed as a series of ‘set meals’ in which any requests for variation are strongly resisted. Our findings add to the small body of literature on household food provisioning and suggest that achieving the idealised ritual of the family meal is underpinned by a range of values and strategies, some of which may run counter to health messages about nutrition.

Political Science research methods courses face two problems. First is what to cover, as there are too many techniques to explore in any one course. Second is dealing with student anxiety around quantitative material. We explore a novel way to approach these issues. Our students began by writing a qualitative paper. They followed with a term paper, on the same topic, that incorporated material learned in the qualitative paper with quantitative data analysis. This helps students appreciate how different methods complement one another. By starting with more familiar qualitative techniques, then moving to the quantitative, and by writing the paper in stages, we help alleviate student anxiety. Students start within their comfort zone, then move outside it once their attention has been piqued by their research question. The concept of ‘Ethnolinguistic Vitality’ (EV) has received variable acceptance and support since its introduction by Giles, Bourhis, and Taylor. It has especially proven to be a valuable heuristic in studies of language maintenance and shift. However, the reliability and validity of the instruments used to investigate EV, especially questionnaires used to test subjective vitality, have proven to be more problematic. This position paper introduces some of the issues that have been considered as difficult in the conceptualisation, investigation and application of EV and will suggest possible areas for further development. Drawing on a study of language attitudes, shift and the EV of the Greek-Orthodox community in Istanbul, this paper argues that there is much to recommend the tripartite conceptualisation of the EV framework in assessing both subjective and objective vitality via quantitative and qualitative methods. Men and women living with HIV with access to ARVs are living longer, healthier lives that can and often do include bearing children. Children occupy a key space in men and women's personal and social lives and often play a fundamental role in maintaining these relationships, irrespective of illness concerns. Couples living with HIV need to balance prevention needs and ill-health while trying to maintain healthy relationships. Health-care providers serving the reproductive needs of HIV-affected couples need to consider the social and relational factors shaping reproductive decisions associated with periconception risk behaviors. This paper based on qualitative research at three hospital sites in eThekwini District, South Africa, investigates the childbearing intentions and needs of people living with HIV (PLHIV), and the attitudes and experiences of health-care providers serving the reproductive needs of PLHIV, and client and provider views and knowledge of safer conception. This research revealed that personal, social, and relationship dynamics shape the reproductive decisions of PLHIV, and "unplanned" pregnancies are not always unintended. Additionally, conception desires are not driven by the number of living children; rather clients are motivated by whether or not they have had any children with their current partner/spouse. Providers should consider the relationship status of clients in discussions about childbearing desires and intentions. Although many providers recognize the complex social realities shaping their clients' reproductive decisions, they have outdated information on serving their reproductive needs. Appropriate training to enable providers to better understand the relationship and social realities surrounding their clients' childbearing intentions is required and should be used as a platform for couples to work together with providers toward safer conception. The adoption of a more participatory approach should be employed to equalize client-provider power dynamics and to ensure clients are more involved in decision-making about reproduction and conception.

To describe why adolescent females who initiated HPV vaccination completed or did not complete the series.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents/guardians of 11-17 year old female adolescents and their pediatric primary care providers in one inner-city public clinic and three private practices to ascertain why girls who initiated HPV vaccination did or did not complete the series. Qualitative analysis was used to identify perceived barriers and facilitators of completion.65 parents/guardians participated: 37 whose daughters received 1 or 2 HPV vaccine doses and 28 whose daughters completed the series. 89% (n = 33) of parents who did not complete the series intended to do so, but were not reminded by the clinic or encountered logistical barriers. Four (11%) decided to stop the vaccine series. 33 providers participated: 24 physicians, 3 nurse practitioners, and 6 registered nurses. Half (n = 14, 52%) of the providers said they told parents when the next doses were due but relied on parents to schedule appointments, 11 (41%) scheduled the second dose when the first dose was given, and 2 (7%) tried to immunize patients when they returned for other appointments. None of the four practices had a reminder/recall system in place to ensure series completion. Of note, neither parents nor providers stated that the need for three doses was a barrier to series completion.Most failure to complete the HPV vaccine series occurred because providers expected parents to make appointments while parents expected to be reminded. Increased use of reminder/recall systems and team-based care with clear communication of expectations regarding appointment scheduling could increase completion rates.

Purpose Self-management is being increasingly promoted within chronic conditions including stroke. Concerns have been raised regarding professional ownership of some programmes, yet little is known of the professional’s experience. This paper aims to present the views of trained therapists about the utility of a specific self-management approach in stroke rehabilitation. Method Eleven stroke therapists trained in the self-management approach participated in semi-structured interviews. These were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Results Two overriding themes emerged. The first was the sense that in normal practice therapists act as “benign dictators”, committed to help their patients, but most comfortable when they, the professional, are in control. Following the adoption of the self-management approach therapists challenged themselves to empower stroke survivors to take control of their own recovery. However, therapists had to confront many internal and external challenges in this transition of power resulting in the promotion of a somewhat “reluctant democracy”. Conclusions This study illustrates that stroke therapists desire a more participatory approach to rehabilitation. However, obstacles challenged the successful delivery of this goal. If self-management is an appropriate model to develop in post stroke pathways, then serious consideration must be given to how and if these obstacles can be overcome. Implications for Rehabilitation Stroke therapists perceive that self-management is appropriate for encouraging ownership of rehabilitation post stroke. Numerous obstacles were identified as challenging the implementation of self-management post stroke. These included: professional models, practices and expectations; institutional demands and perceived wishes of stroke survivors. For self-management to be effectively implemented by stroke therapists, these obstacles must be considered and overcome. This should be as part of an integrated therapy service, rather than as an add-on.

Setting. A workshop entitled Patients with multimorbidity in general practice held during the Nordic Congress of General Practice in Tampere, Finland, 2013. Subjects. A total of 180 GPs and researchers. Design. Data for this summary report originate from audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim plenary discussions as well as 76 short questionnaires answered by attendees during the workshop. The data were analysed using framework analysis. Results. (i) Complex care pathways and clinical guidelines developed for single diseases were identified as very challenging when handling patients with multimorbidity; (ii) insufficient cooperation between the professionals involved in the care of multimorbid patients underlined the GPs’ impression of a fragmented health care system; (iii) GPs found it challenging to establish a good dialogue and prioritize problems with patients within the timeframe of a normal consultation; (iv) the future role of the GP was discussed in relation to diminishing health inequality, and current payment systems were criticized for not matching the treatment patterns of patients with multimorbidity. Conclusion. The participants supported the development of a future research strategy to improve the treatment of patients with multimorbidity. Four main areas were identified, which need to be investigated further to improve care for this steadily growing patient group. Lifestyle interventions often fail to successfully reach individuals with lower socio-economic status (SES), possibly because of the individual behavioural orientation to health behaviour and because limited research has included the target groups' perspectives in the development of interventions. Certainly, in order to make lifestyle interventions more applicable, target groups' viewpoints should to be taken into account. In order to tailor an effective lifestyle intervention to groups with lower SES of different ethnic origins, 14 focus group interviews were conducted with Turkish, Moroccan and Dutch male and female groups. The target groups' responses highlight their viewpoint and their dilemmas with regard to physical activity behaviour and healthy eating. Exploration of the target groups' behaviour in terms of their own logic revealed three prominent themes. Firstly, some individuals find it difficult to maintain healthy eating habits and regular physical activities, as their concept of a healthy life comprises competing values and activities. Secondly, social norms and social practices of others influence health behaviour. Thirdly, respondents' answers reflect how they deal with the dilemma of competing values and norms. They use different ways of reasoning to make sense of their own (health) behaviour. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that considering physical activity and eating as collective social practices rather than as determinants of health will provide new opportunities to initiate healthy lifestyles and to make lifestyle interventions more applicable to target groups' realities.

Purpose: Our aim was to describe experiences of using Nintendo Wii Fit™ for balance exercise, from the perspectives of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their physiotherapists (PT). Methods: Individual interviews with 15 patients with MS were conducted, recruited from a multi-centre study investigating the effects of balance exercising using Wii Fit. We also conducted a single focus group interview with nine PT involved in the study. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using content analysis. Results: Both patients and PT said that exercising with Wii Fit games was fun, and that it challenged the patients' physical and cognitive capacities. The competitive content in the games provided motivation to continue playing. Patients and PT reported improved body control and, more importantly, positive effects on balance and walking in daily life. The PT regarded Wii training as an effective alternative to other balance training, but some felt unsure in how to manage the video game. The patients regarded Wii training as a possible home training solution. Conclusions: Patients with MS and their PT considered Wii Fit exercises to be fun, challenging, and self-motivating. Exercising with Wii games can address balance impairments in MS, and can be performed at home as well as in rehabilitation settings. Implications for Rehabilitation Nintendo Wii Fit™ can be used as a fun and challenging way to perform balance exercises. The competitive content embedded in the games triggers continued playing and exercising. The positive effect on balance control can improve standing and walking in everyday activities.

The absence of the ability to hear sounds in deaf people is an obstacle to optimal communication in a predominantly hearing world. Emergency situations harbor sufficient challenge for the hearing person and pose even greater barriers for the deaf and hard of hearing. During disasters and emergency situations, deaf people have great difficulty in obtaining and sharing information, increasing their dependence on others. This article focuses on the experience of deaf people during a period of security threat, when missiles from the Gaza strip were aimed at the civilian population in Southern Israel, in 2009. The aim of this article is to illustrate the complexities that deaf citizens experienced, and describe their coping mechanisms. A qualitative study including 15 heterogeneous-background Deaf participants interviewed by a researcher that belongs to the deaf community using a multiple-method facilitated questionnaire. Data was analyzed using grounded theory methodology principles. Main categories that arose from data analysis were communication problems during emergencies, the pager as a questionable warning device about emergencies (due to timing and content/context issues of its use), and the implications of the location of deaf people at time of emergency. Various channels for conveying information should be examined and created in order to maximize the heterogeneous deaf community's ability to receive vital information during an emergency. Professional sign language interpreters are necessary during emergencies, helping to reduce both dependence on informal sources (such as family members, including minors, friends, neighbors, by-standers) and risk. The development of new technologies may bear potential help for deaf persons during emergencies. Being a socio-linguistic minority, it is recommended to ensure these technologies will be accessible to the whole deaf community.

In this article, we identify some worrying problems in the contemporary practice of qualitative research, such as the confusion regarding content and meaning in content analysis, the frequent use of standardized methods that avoids philosophy, as well as the description/interpretation dichotomy in empirical research. Since they all arise from a failure to understand the concept of meaning, we return to the question of meaning as the axis that qualitative research pivots around. We examine the meaning of meaning, and how meaning differs from content, and we then ask what consequences this has for research. Even though our analysis is rooted in phenomenological philosophy, we argue that that the ideas that we present are valid for any qualitative research approach. The question of understanding and relating to meaning, we argue, is a momentous issue for qualitative research, where we either continue safeguarding the very essence of qualitative research as dealing with human phenomena, or give it up in favor of more pragmatic and clear-cut methods that seemingly does away with the question of meaning.

Aim. To unpack and interpret descriptions of experiences of social relationships during pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) for people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Method. Inspired by interpretive phenomenology, individual qualitative interviews were conducted twice with 18 persons from COPD rehabilitation units in two general hospitals. Qualitative content analysis was performed. Results. Analysis of the interviews revealed the overarching theme of belonging. The participants emphasised social integration in rehabilitation groups as well as support from peers and health-care personnel as important dimensions of social relationships with regard to PR. Active participation in and engagement with the groups provided opportunities for patients to share their knowledge, encouraged mutual trust, and support and increased self-confidence, and motivation for self-care and further social participation. Integration in the groups and perceived support during PR made coping and adaptation easier and had a positive effect on quality of life. Conclusions. Patients’ perspectives on PR were strongly influenced by certain facets of social relationships, such as social integration and social support. Patients’, peers’ and health-care professionals’ strategies to promote social support and social integration should be further explored in the future, both in different contexts and for longer periods of time.

The research reported in this article began as a staff development project in which teachers of Grades 3–11 produced multimedia projects, conducted a similar project in their own classes, and showed their students’ projects at a conference. Researchers acted as participant observers, providing technical support as the students carried out their multimedia projects. Research questions focused on attitudes toward science and multimedia projects, gender differences in attitudes and expertise, and the process of students taking responsibility for their own learning. Data for this qualitative study represented 3 points of view: teachers, students, and research staff. In this paper, we introduce a project on singles’ intimate practices conducted during COVID times as a case study of quantitative social research with a particular focus on qualitative reflections. We thematize the topic of self-reflexivity, which is considered an essential category in qualitative research but largely neglected in quantitative research. We discuss three methodological issues through the lens of self-reflection: ‘translation issues’;the problems of asking ‘sensitive’ and the ‘right’ questions;and the problematics of ‘the present’ in particularly fluid times. We show that this approach promotes contextualization of the measurement tool, the data and the findings and can be a way for doing quantitative research on intimacy outside the ‘standard’ nuclear family in pandemic times. Overall, this paper underscores the ways that scholars as individuals and teams are inextricable from our research site, as we navigate disruption even while seeking to understand its implications on our informants. Research on organizational stress in competitive sport has grown exponentially within the last two decades. Despite the volume of literature and the narrative reviews available, no systematic reviews exist that have sought to bring collective findings together in a single, rigorous point of reference. The objective of this oral presentation is to share the findings of this review on organizational stress and well-being, which was subjected to rigorous evaluation and synthesis, with the aim of highlighting innovative avenues for future qualitative research. A systematic review of literature was conducted using PRISMA-P guidelines and robust searches of PsycArticles, PsycInfo, and SPORTDiscus databases. Citation pearl growing and manual searches of journal databases helped to retrieve additional relevant papers that may have been missed in the initial searches. To be included, retrieved papers must have contained primary or secondary data collected from athletes, coaches, support staff in competitive sport, and have been published between March 2001 and September 2020. Key information from sifted papers (i.e., at the title, abstract, and full-text levels) were extracted and the final sample of included papers were tabulated into a study characteristics table on MicrosoftTM Excel. Study quality scores were evaluated among the research team, while included papers were shared among topical experts to reduce the risk of bias. The final sample comprised 47 studies that included 4,630 individuals (athletes, coaches, and support staff). The synthesized findings presented within this systematic review of literature proffer a myriad of widely distributed organizational stressors underpinned by a range of situational properties and managed through a variety of coping options (e.g., problem solving, social support). Limited studies within the literature focused on cognitive appraisals, emotions, and well-being within the context of organizational stress, with existing literature overly focusing on athletes and discrete stress experiences. The review highlights the importance of interpersonal stress transactions (e.g., appraisals, coping) and their influence on individual and collective functioning in sport. Athletes, coaches, and support staff in sport organizations experience a range of stress transactions that holds implications for performance and health-related outcomes. As this presentation will highlight, future research should consider the use of longitudinal, diary, integrative designs, and further innovatively designed studies (e.g., creative non-fiction) within under-represented populations (e.g., coaches, support staff) to deepen our understanding of the relational nature of organizational stress and well-being.

‘Public’ toilets are crucial to our social and geographical landscape, and access to them has become prominent in recent public and academic debates. Drawing on a qualitative study based on 25 daily diaries and follow-up interviews with people living with the common health condition irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), this paper explores toilet access through the lens of mundane mobilities. Planning journeys, mapping toilets, a reliance on commercial toilets and intersections with travel were key themes emerging from the study. Through the lens of IBS, we see how navigations of seemingly everyday mobilities are problematised through the bodily precarity of unpredictable symptoms intertwined with the availability, comfort and knowledge of ‘public’ toilets. This paper works at demonstrating the interdependency between everyday mobilities and toilet access. IBS offers a particularly useful insight in which the common but often hidden nature of the condition demonstrates the multiplicities of ‘public’ toilet access and how the unpredictability of access meets with, and is embodied, by those with the condition. This paper contributes to interdisciplinary toilet scholarship by engaging in mundane and embodied geographies and centralises toilets as a site of connection for those studying everyday mobilities.

Many workplaces in Vietnam, such as international non-government organisations (INGOs), where Vietnamese staff collaborate with people from different cultures, have become increasingly culturally diverse and interdisciplinary. This paper is based on the findings of broader qualitative research conducted between December 2010 and November 2012 that explored young Vietnamese graduates’ experiences of working at the intersection of different cultural worlds in the context of development projects at INGOs in Vietnam. Interviewees were nineteen young Vietnamese graduates and six international directors or deputy directors. This paper discusses their experiences of working for INGOs. Young graduates developed intercultural communication skills, became empathetic with others, and reconciled disparate cultural practices. While helping local communities adapt to development projects, graduates harmoniously combined the cultural values and customs of both sides. They disseminated information, promoted mutual understanding, formed culturally relativistic attitudes, promoted cross-cultural empathy, spread international goodwill and reconciled disparate cultural practices, facilitated communication, and interacted with persons or groups of different cultures.

Many cities in the United States are pursuing agendas to implement ICT-based solutions to tackle urban challenges, thus achieving the ‘smart city’ label. While the discussion on this urban development paradigm has revolved around the intensive use of technologies, the academic literature increasingly calls for shifting the focus to the people living in the cities. This paper argues that to achieve a people-centred smart city, cities should include the perspectives of all the local stakeholders. Under this assumption, this paper provides the views of the local stakeholders in a medium-sized city in Tennessee, Chattanooga. Particularly, this study explores their perceived smart city concept, the ethical standards that should guide smart city projects, the desired future projects in their community, and the barriers to implementing them. The data was collected using a combination of participatory budgeting, five focus groups, and twenty-eight interviews with city dwellers, entrepreneurs, university faculty, non-profit members, and government officials. The results suggest that, far from the image of a highly technological city, the stakeholders envision a city dedicated to improving the quality of life and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, to achieve this smart city, the projects need to be based on full transparency and the promotion of social inclusion. In contrast to the dominant trend towards the privatization of urban space, this study finds that the stakeholders prefer public based smart city projects such as ICT-based public transport services. However, its successful implementation will have to overcome the barriers caused by funding constraints, public acceptance, and political interests. Cities may use the results of this study to design more responsible smart city projects that strike an optimal point between citizen engagement and technological applications and innovations while supporting all stakeholders’ needs.

Women with migration experience from non-European countries living in Norway question the degree to which workfare is beneficial to their participation in working life. Welfare-workers regard ‘immigrant women’ as a particularly difficult group to assist with their transition into employment. Based on ethnographic observation of more than fifty meetings, interviews, and other qualitative sources, this paper explores one specific reason why these processes seldom succeed. Diffuse pain dominates the lives of many women, a situation not fully understood nor accommodated medically, socially or in terms of welfare rights. The welfare system fails, by and large, to offer solutions that address real-life challenges. A better understanding of pain in its communicative aspect is necessary to promote the participation of women – and particularly those with migration experience – in workfare. The paper’s point of departure is a pivotal moment in the jobseeker Amina’s workfare process. A case study is developed to show how pain can make women feel obliged to act according to a certain ‘script’ to be able to negotiate welfare outcomes. Pain is a major hindrance to working life and it is important to understand more about this in the welfare context.

Understanding people's concepts of illness and health is key to crafting policies and communications campaigns to address a particular medical concern. This paper gathers cultural knowledge on infectious disease causation, prevention, and treatment the Philippines that are particularly relevant for the COVID-19 pandemic, and analyzes their implications for public health. This paper draws from ethnographic work (e.g. participant observation, interviews, conversations, virtual ethnography) carried out individually by each of the two authors from February to September 2020. The data was analyzed in relation to the anthropological literature on local health knowledge in the Philippines. We find that notions of hawa (contagion) and resistensiya (immunity) inform people's views of illness causation as well as their preventive practices - including the use of face masks and 'vitamins' and other pharmaceuticals, as well as the ways in which they negotiate prescriptions of face mask use and physical distancing. These perceptions and practices go beyond biomedical knowledge and are continuously being shaped by people's everyday experiences and circulations of knowledge in traditional and social media. Our study reveals that people's novel practices reflect recurrent, familiar, and long-held concepts - such as the moral undertones of hawa and experimentation inherent in resistensiya. Policies and communications efforts should acknowledge and anticipate how these notions may serve as either barriers or facilitators to participatory care and improved health outcomes.

Since the turn of the century, there have been frequent expressions of concern about a perceived lack of creativity in UK schools, in both curriculum content and in teaching. Recently, as the emphasis on mathematics, science and technology has strengthened, serious concerns have also been expressed about the marginalisation of the arts and creativity in schools. In the light of these concerns, this paper reports in-depth, qualitative research into the pedagogies of practising artists experienced in working with young people and highly valued by the schools that employ them. We use the notion of ‘signature pedagogies’ to argue that the artist–teachers adopted a particular stance and set of pedagogic practices that are coherent and distinctively different to those that are currently officially promoted in UK schools, and that this distinctive pedagogy enhanced both creative practice and engagement in the arts in the schools in which the artists worked. In this paper, we identify the signature pedagogies of the artists, theorise their stance and argue that the findings of our study provide a heuristic which can be valuable to all teachers who are interested in expanding their teaching repertoires and fostering students’ creativity.

The paper presents results of a phenomenological longitudinal qualitative study undertaken with mentors associated with the Big Brothers Big Sisters programme in the Czech Republic. Ten mentors were interviewed during the first month and after 5 and 10 months of their mentoring involvement employing phenomenological in-depth semi-structured interviews. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was subsequently applied using QSR NVivo software for data analysis. This paper reports the findings of an IPA analysis of one of the central theme of mentors‘ experience, common to all interviewed mentors: initial motivation to volunteer in formal youth mentoring relationships (FYMRs). The findings of the IPA analysis are discussed using the framework of self-determination theory (SDT) with its continuum of autonomous and controlling motivations. As a result, we argue that the initial motivations of mentors can be assessed according to the level of autonomy in mentors' motivation, in other words, congruence of their motivations with the authentic self. We argue that the level of congruence of mentors‘ motivation with the authentic self can be considered as the quality feature of the mentors’ motivation. We conclude that, in theory, this feature has an impact on the subsequent dynamics and perceived satisfaction of formal youth mentoring relationships. We recommend that the mentors‘ motivation, and specifically, the level of autonomy in mentors‘ motivation to volunteer with socially disadvantaged children be assessed in mentoring programmes as a qualitative feature in mentorś training and recruitment.

This paper reports findings from a longitudinal qualitative study that explored the ethnographic learning processes of 10 modern languages students who spent one full academic year abroad, having first completed successfully an Introduction to Ethnography course in the UK. It begins from the argument that although significant attempts have been made to integrate ethnography into modern languages undergraduate degree programmes, relatively little is known about its actual impact on modern languages sojourners. Drawing on active interviews and reflective diaries that were designed to investigate this impact from shortly before participants embarked on their year abroad to the moment they returned, the thematic and critical discourse analysis of the data focuses attention on two key themes: students’ perceptions of their host cultures and the impact of ethnography on students’ perceptions. Findings from the first theme reveal that participants’ perceptions were derogatory and that they used a number of mitigating discourse strategies to avoid creating a negative impression on the researchers. Findings from the second theme suggest that ethnography made little impact on most participants, given that their derogatory perceptions of the “foreign other” remained almost intact throughout the year abroad. The paper discusses possible reasons for these findings, arguing that the contextual nature of ethnographic inquiry does not always enable modern languages sojourners to dismantle the cultural generalisations they may make.

The aim of this study was to synthesize previous knowledge about ethics in nurses' interprofessional collaboration in clinical practice. Although healthcare professionals have common goals and shared values, ethical conflicts still arise during patient care. We carried out a meta-synthesis of peer-reviewed papers published in any language from 2013-2019, using both electronic searches, with the CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, and SocINDEX databases, and manual searches. We identified 4,763 papers and selected six qualitative papers, and three theoretical papers, based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria and quality appraisal. The studies came from the USA, Canada, Sweden, Australia, Botswana, and the Netherlands. We found that in ethics studies on nurses' interprofessional collaboration in clinical practice the focus has been on factors that affect how patients receive care. These factors were patients' wishes, whether they were told the truth about their condition, and how different professionals recognized and treated their pain. The focus in the papers we reviewed was on the roles of different professionals during the care process, including ethical conflicts with regard to their aims, commitment, and the balance of power among them and other professions. More research is needed to raise the visibility of how nurses and other professionals recognize, and evaluate, their professional and interprofessional ethics.

This paper mainly aims at investigating the barriers that female Bahraini managers face in their career progression when attempting to reach senior management positions. In addition, this paper seeks to propose practical solutions to overcome the Barriers in women's career progression. To achieve the objectives of the study, qualitative research approach was applied through semi-structured interviews specifically designed to collect primary information from the samples of the study, which consisted of (40) managers (female) working in banks in Bahrain and financial sector. The results showed that autonomy and acquiescence to the norms are the main barriers that female Bahraini managers face in their career progression when attempting to reach senior management positions. As well as, the results illustrated that competence, customs, and self- improvement are practical solutions to overcome the Barriers facing women in career progression.
