In this study, we focus on ethical education as a means to improve artificial companion's conceptualization of moral decision-making process in human users. In particular, we focus on automatically determining whether changes in ethical education influenced core moral values in humans throughout the century. We analyze ethics as taught in Japan before WWII and today to verify how much the pre-WWII moral attitudes have in common with those of contemporary Japanese, to what degree what is taught as ethics in school overlaps with the general population's understanding of ethics, as well as to verify whether a major reform of the guidelines for teaching the school subject of "ethics" at school after 1946 has changed the way common people approach core moral questions (such as those concerning the sacredness of human life). We selected textbooks used in teaching ethics at school from between 1935 and 1937, and those used in junior high schools today (2019) and analyzed what emotional and moral associations such contents generated. The analysis was performed with an automatic moral and emotional reasoning agent and based on the largest available text corpus in Japanese as well as on the resources of a Japanese digital library. As a result, we found out that, despite changes in stereotypical view on Japan's moral sentiments, especially due to historical events, past and contemporary Japanese share a similar moral evaluation of certain basic moral concepts, although there is a large discrepancy between how they perceive some actions to be beneficial to the society as a whole while at the same time being inconclusive when it comes to assessing the same action's outcome on the individual performing them and in terms of emotional consequences. Some ethical categories, assessed positively before the war, while being associated with a nationalistic trend in education have also disappeared from the scope of interest of post- war society. The findings of this study support suggestions proposed by others that the development of personal AI systems requires supplementation with moral reasoning. Moreover, the paper builds upon this idea and further suggests that AI systems need to be aware of ethics not as a constant, but as a function with a correction on historical and cultural changes in moral reasoning. This paper examines the life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction and associated marginal costs (MC) in Japan when the government enhances the transition to battery electric passenger vehicles (BEVs) by implementing a rapid investment regime for charging stations and fossil-fueled vehicle bans. Important factors affecting BEV emissions are battery performance, battery production technology, electricity generation mix and battery minimum state of charge (SOC min). We find that in addition to a rapid investment regime, a fossil-fueled vehicles ban policy is necessary to significantly increase the uptake of BEVs and achieves the deepest reduction in life cycle GHG emissions. Under this policy, with carbon neutral electricity by 2050 and a low SOC min charging regime, life-cycle GHG emissions are reduced by 48% and the MC by 53% in 2060. A carbon neutral light transport fleet in 2050 will require carbon capture and storage to offset 24 million tonnes-CO 2 equivalent of emissions even if electricity is carbon neutral by 2050 and users adhere to a low SOC min charging regime. Standardization of the concentration of gaseous 222Rn based on a multi-electrode proportional counter (MEPC) is under development as a primary standard in Japan. In this study, the concept and evaluation of its performance are reported. The latter consists of a preliminary result for the uncertainty budget associated with the measurement of the MEPC and compensation of the electric field distortion in the MEPC. This study investigates the impacts of carbon pricing policies on firms' greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We include two carbon pricing policies: carbon tax and emission trading scheme (ETS) at national and sub-national (province) levels, measured as policy existence (binary variable) and carbon price (continuous variable). Firms' GHG emissions are measured as total emissions and emission intensity. Using unique recent firm-level data from 2010 to 2021 from three East Asia countries (Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), and the People's Republic of China (PRC)), we obtain the following key findings. First, the national carbon pricing policy significantly reduced firms' GHG emissions and GHG emission intensity in Japan and the ROK. The greater the carbon price, the greater the impact. Second, the subnational carbon pricing policies implemented in two provinces of Japan (Saitama and Tokyo) decreased firms' GHG emissions. Third, heavy industry sectors such as energy, utilities, and industrials experienced a substantial decrease in GHG emission intensity due to the carbon pricing policy. Finally, our main results are robust to different model specifications and various measures of firms' GHG emissions. Although literature studying the ex-post impact of carbon pricing on emissions at country and sector-level is abundant, this paper contributes to the existing literature providing empirical evidence of the impact of carbon pricing policies on firms' emissions using firm-level data, which is highly limited especially in Asia. We investigated element composition ratios in two sets of sequentially collected airborne particulate matter (PM) samples obtained through the automatic sampler of the Atmospheric Environmental Regional Observation System (AEROS). A series of micro-PIXE analyses and imaging were performed on a PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane tape filter corresponding to two hourly time slots through a high-concentration air pollution event from 26th to 27th March 2020 sampled at Ota, Japan (36.290° N, 139.381° E) by utilizing an external 3 MeV proton microprobe. Latent variables of sequentially collected PM samples were analyzed by the non-linear least square method and classified by those clustering driven by house-made data analysis software. Micro-PIXE imaging effectively confirmed the presence of large elemental agglomerations on the PTFE membrane tape filter of AEROS that often appeared as outliners in data analysis. Counterurbanisation, a phenomenon signifying the urban exodus, primarily highlights certain aspects of rural mobility while often overlooking its diverse nature. With globalisation, a new wave of challenges has emerged in rural areas due to an increase in transnational mobility, complexities that have remained largely under-explored. This research paper addresses these gaps by examining the impact of rural mobility on Kutchan, Hokkaido, Japan, a rural town that has experienced significant social and spatial transformations due to an influx of domestic and transnational migrants, supplemented by increased investment. By analysing population data from 1959 to 2022, the study identifies the period when rural mobility emerged as the dominant demographic trend. Subsequently, it examines the impact of rural mobility on demographic changes, socio-economic shifts, and housing dynamics in both the ski and non-ski tourism areas of Kutchan during this period. The findings reveal that rural mobility has been the primary factor affecting Kutchan's demographic structure since 2000. From 2000 to 2010, highly educated foreign residents supplanted local Japanese residents with basic education, sparking a rise in housing prices and a transition from small entrepreneurs to large institutions in the ski tourism area. From 2015 to 2020, the influx of large institutions and capital associated with transnational migrants caused a significant rise in housing prices, thereby accelerating the displacement of Japanese residents throughout Kutchan. These social and spatial changes align with the patterns of gentrification. A 230 MeV superconducting azimuthally varying field (AVF) cyclotron SC230 was developed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd., Japan. With a yoke diameter, height and weight of 2.8 m, 1.7 m and 65 t, respectively, it is currently the most compact isochronous cyclotron for proton therapy. Size reduction was achieved by a high magnetic field using cryogen-free superconducting coils. It adopts not only a superconducting magnet, but also sectors with a narrow pole gap and large spiral angle, two dees with low power consumption, and beam extraction using the precessional extraction method. It has a maximum beam current of 1 μ A. The total power consumption of its system is lower than 200 kW. After each component, including the magnet, was fabricated, the cyclotron was moved to a new test site, and a vacuum test and conditioning of some components were conducted. The beam commissioning started, and the first extracted beam was successfully observed. Automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) plays a crucial role in enhancing the energy efficiency of air conditioning systems. Deep learning has emerged as a promising tool for image classification, and its application in the context of AFDD of HVAC systems is gaining traction due to its exceptional performance. However, the deployment cost of deep models in practical scenarios is increased due to the large number of parameters and the lack of interpretability. This paper focuses on improving the potential of deep learning models for AFDD in real HVAC systems. We use pruning to reduce the number of parameters in the model and use layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) to improve the interpretability of the model. The case study builds a simulation model and 31 kinds of fault data sets based on the actual HVAC in Japan. Based on the findings, Without loss of accuracy, the pruning method can reduce the model size by more than 99 % and maintain 90% classification accuracy. • Empowers novice farmers with deep learning and augmented reality for grape berry thinning. • Tested across the full growth cycle in an actual table grape field. • The system elevates product quality by 8.18 % compared to skilled farmers. Berry thinning is a crucial process in table grape cultivation. Such visual features as bunch compactness, bunch form, and berry size are important factors affecting market value. Moreover, sufficient space for each berry to grow also largely influences the final product's quality, such as the sugar concentration. Berry thinning requires professional skills, and it is usually accomplished only by experienced farmers. Furthermore, the appropriate period for berry thinning is limited to two weeks; hence, berry-thinning tasks have led to a bottleneck in terms of increasing the yield of table grape products. This paper addresses the aforementioned issue by proposing a system for empowering unskilled farmers to begin berry thinning without in-person coaching from expert farmers. The proposed system employs a deep neural network model to learn the knowledge required for identifying berries to be removed, and it uses augmented reality technology to display instructions based on this knowledge to naïve farmers through smart glasses. The proposed system was validated throughout the entire growing season in a real table grape field in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. It was confirmed that unskilled farmers can execute berry-thinning tasks immediately without training. Furthermore, they can become familiar with the proposed system quickly. A new risk-based tsunami early warning method is developed using Random Forest (RF) with an extensive tsunami monitoring network (S-net) deployed off the Northeastern region of Japan. To consider a wide range of possible tsunami waves that may occur in the future, the RF model is developed using simulated 4000 tsunami wave time series at the S-net sensors. The response variable is the total aggregate loss of buildings caused by the tsunami, and the explanatory variables include earthquake information (magnitude, epicenter latitude, and epicenter longitude) and tsunami wave amplitudes at the S-net sensors. Unlike the conventional tsunami early warning method for predicting the tsunami wave amplitude along the shoreline, the response variable adopted in this study is a tsunami risk metric that reflects the tsunami impact to people and assets in coastal areas. The RF model is suitable for predicting highly nonlinear and scattered tsunami loss due to its characteristics of nonparametric regression and ensemble learning. The result indicates that compared with conventional linear regression-based algorithms, RF predicts the tsunami loss significantly better, reducing the mean square error by 90%. The Advanced Fusion Neutron Source (A-FNS) project is progressing at the QST Rokkasho institute, Japan. The A-FNS will conduct fusion neutron irradiation tests of materials for a fusion demonstration reactor (DEMO reactor). For these tests a high intensity deuteron beam accelerator is used to produce a high neutron flux with the neutron energies around 14 MeV. The accelerator system accelerates a deuteron beam to a beam energy of 40 MeV, guides the beam towards a liquid lithium target and shapes the uniform beam at the Li target using a magnet system. Two of the main considerations for the A-FNS high energy beam transport (HEBT) design are protection of the Superconducting Radio-Frequency linear accelerator (SRF) and vacuum system design for the interface of the HEBT and the target system. For the A-FNS, back streaming of Li vapor from the windowless free surface of the Li target is a concern. In addition, widely different vacuum pressure must be maintained between the accelerator system and the target system. This paper addresses the ways in which the teaching of English for academic purposes by ‘Western’ teachers in Japanese higher education institutions is shaped by gender and sexuality. The paper draws on findings from a 5 year ethnographic study of white Western teachers of English in Japan. Drawing on interview data with 18 male participants, the paper points to the way elite status is attached to the teaching of English for academic purposes (TEAP) in contrast with teaching general English; the way TEAP is reproduced as a male-dominated activity among English-native-speaker teachers; and the way white Western men teaching in these contexts display an enhanced professional masculinity. Discourses articulated by the men also serve to position gendered Others as illegitimate or unworthy participants in TEAP. Although the men's accounts tend to frame TEAP as a rational, disembodied, asexual occupation, the paper argues that gender and sexuality are deployed as identity gatekeeping tools that serve to police the borders of academic English as an elite, male-dominated professional category. In closing, I make proposals for transformation of gendered hierarchies in this context, but these would require shifts in deep-seated cultural, institutional, and interpersonal gender ideologies. Small-scale woody biomass energy systems have an inherent ability to aid in emissions reduction while stimulating local economies and, as collective energy systems, are strongly connected to supply chain design based on local conditions and stakeholder integration. Despite an abundance of forest area alongside the promotion of biomass in energy policies, however, woody biomass utilization still remains low in Japan. The woody biomass supply chain, considered as a socio-technical system, involves a complex, cross-sectoral stakeholder network in which inter-organizational dynamics necessitates well-organized management based on an understanding of formal factors such as technology, as well as informal factors such as social relations and culture. In this paper, success factor perceptions from across the woody biomass supply chain are investigated based on semi-structured interviews with four stakeholders in the Kyushu region of Japan. Identified success factors here are: 1) respect of values & traditions, 2) transportation infrastructure, 3) business model integration, 4) relationship & trust, 5) local vitalization and 6) biomass quality control. A convergence as well as divergence of perceptions are observed, involving both formal and informal dimensions. Aiming to balance perceptions and to enable long-term success of woody biomass in Japan, a series of policy implications are drawn, including cross-ministerial integration, knowledge building on wood logistics, forest certification, local coordinators, biomass quality control standards and a feed-in-tariff for heat. Based on an analysis of audiovisual data from multidisciplinary rehabilitation team meetings in Japan, this paper investigates how Japanese rehabilitation team members collaboratively negotiate decisions about dietary prescriptions when treating stroke patients suffering from dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). Dysphagia can be scaled by the level of patients’ swallowing capacity; the lower the level, the more elaborate food modification is required. The paper first conducts componential analysis to uncover semantic relations among a set of dysphagia diets. Next, the paper draws on occasioned semantics to systematically illustrate how such relations are realized in actual interactive talk. Analysis shows that members utilize the pre-existing semantic structures of dysphagia diets as the basis for achieving various interactional activities, such as categorizing types of food, achieving rhetorical effects, and evaluating the level of dysphagia. Moreover, analysis reveals that the use of scaling diagrams is helpful in illustrating scalar relations co-constructed in actual conversation and understanding the mechanism of regrading (up/downgrading) phenomena. The paper integrates ethnographic information regarding the use of dysphagia diets into the analysis of formulation practices in decision-making activities. Natural ventilation is an effective strategy for reducing energy use in buildings. The effect is especially significant for buildings with high internal heat generation, such as commercial office buildings. Therefore, naturally ventilated office buildings are becoming increasingly popular in Japan. In this paper, monitoring and measurement results from Japanese studies are reviewed. Thirty buildings are selected for the review based on the search results obtained using a Japanese search engine for academic papers. To identify trends in the design of naturally ventilated buildings, the representative air change rates are compared. The values range from 1 to 10 ac/h, and no specific peak is observed. In addition, no strong correlation is found between the air change rates and floor areas. These results suggest that the natural ventilation performance depends considerably on the design. Additionally, the natural ventilation performance is highly dependent on the building shape, which is generally discussed during the early stages of building design. In this context, it is important to create a clear target air change rate within the range of achievable values for natural ventilation design in the early design stage and to consider this target throughout the building design process. We collect data capturing the entry of bus operating companies by web-scraping and use a structural estimation method developed in econometrics for the purpose of measuring the degree of competition. Our empirical analysis yields the following three main results. First, we find that the markup ratios always exceed 1, which indicates that the entry of one additional firm always intensifies competition. Specifically, the markup gained by one firm under duopoly is estimated to be about three quarters of that under monopoly. Second, the competitive effect of an additional entry decreases as the number of incumbents increases. This result is obtained irrespective of the mode of competition. Third, we find that the services offered by firms in the industry are significantly differentiated. Counterfactual analysis reveals that additional 0.76 firms can enter a market on average by differentiating their products from each other. This paper presents an attention-based row-column encoder-decoder (ARCED) model for recognizing an input image of multiple text lines from Japanese historical documents without explicit segmentation of lines. The recognition system has three main parts: a feature extractor, a row-column encoder, and a decoder. We introduce a row-column BLSTM in the encoder and a residual LSTM network in the decoder. The whole system is trained end-to-end by a standard cross-entropy loss function, requiring only document images and their ground-truth text. We experimentally evaluate the performance of ARCED on the dataset of Japanese historical documents: Kana-PRMU. The results of the experiments show that ARCED outperforms the state-of-the-art recognition methods on the dataset. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the row-column BLSTM in the encoder and the residual LSTM in the decoder improves the performance of the encoder-decoder model for the recognition of Japanese historical document. Shifts in protein production methods are an emerging challenge toward realizing a sustainable society. This paper aims to examine preferences among Japanese consumers regarding attributes of beef mince and its substitutes, to develop consumer segments based on these preferences, and to explore the segment with higher acceptance of replacement from conventional products. This paper also aims to explain intersegment differences from consumer heterogeneity in human values, scientific literacy, and sociodemographic viewpoints for a deeper understanding of consumer behavior in each segment. The results of an online choice experiment involving 4421 consumers in Japan, using food labels on mince showed that Japanese-origin organic beef was associated with the highest utility among the five production methods mentioned. Five consumer segments were identified with latent class analysis: novelty accepters , generous customers , attribute-economy balancers , price – conscious , and conservatives , which vary in preference in choice behavior, sociodemographic, human values, and scientific literacy. This paper gives an overview of the last 100 years of fluidization in the Japanese context. Japan was a relatively early adopter of the Winkler coal gasification technology in industry and an early participator in the formation of chemical engineering initiated in the United Kingdom and the United States. However, it was left far behind in the rapid development of fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC) technology in the worsening international relations of the 1930s. Academic research on fluidization and its applications, which had started with the development of FCC, did not start substantially in Japan until 1952, when the San Francisco Peace Treaty came into effect. In this paper, first reviewed is the global progress of chemical engineering and fluidization research, and further discussed is the three-stage scheme in the development of the knowledge of fluidization. Taking these as the background, we review first the pre-war and early post-war research situations, then, the formation of the fluidization community in Japan. Finally, the fully-fledged post-war research and technological developments with a brief look at the Japanese contribution to the above-mentioned global progress are reviewed regarding the three fields: energy-environment applications, catalytic reactors and numerical simulation. Introduction and Objectives The animal models for renal carcinogenesis have allowed researchers to better understand the physiopathological, genetic, molecular, and immunological mechanisms underlying the development of human renal cancers from the induction of precancerous lesions to the metastatic process. Our study aimed to review and discuss the characteristics of all the spontaneous animal models of renal carcinogenesis described in scientific literature to date and see how they could address future challenges in the field of personalized medicine. Methods and Materials We reviewed all the papers on PubMed which focus on spontaneous animal models of renal carcinogenesis. To do so, we used the keywords "spontaneous" AND "animal model" AND "renal cancer" in the PubMed search engine. We also conducted a search using the keywords "spontaneous" AND "animal model" AND "kidney cancer." PRISMA recommendations were used for the literature review. Results A total of 213 publications were found on PubMed with the keywords "spontaneous" AND "animal model" AND "kidney cancer." 219 publications were found on PubMed with the keywords "spontaneous" AND "animal model" AND "renal cancer." After pooling these 2 searches and removing the duplicate publications, 233 publications remained. Among these, 220 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility; 160 were removed because they were irrelevant to our topic, and the remaining 60 studies were included in our qualitative synthesis. Conclusions Many spontaneous animal models have been developed to study renal cancer. So far, these models have enabled the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms underlying renal cancer. Though less appropriate than patient xenografts from the perspective of personalized medicine, we believe animal models can help medical professionals better understand the hows and whys of the genetic events underlying the intratumoral heterogeneity and spatial distribution of metastatic subclones. Therefore, there are few reports that comprehensively examine the situation of health economic evaluation in Japan. In this paper, we review the health economic evaluation systems among those countries. We also conducted a case study that investigated the time-trend of cost, effectiveness, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for anticancer drug regimens in Japan. We found a time-trend ICER for breast cancer (BC). Additionally, molecular targeting drugs for BC had a positive effect on the ICER, and both small molecular-targeting drugs and monoclonal antibodies (mAb) had a higher ICER for BC compared with conventional drugs. The SLENDER Integrated Delivery System (IDS™) is an 'all-in-one' fixed-wire coronary stenting device designed for direct stenting, precluding the need for conventional guidewires and predilatation balloons. It achieves ultra-low profiles (crossing profiles as low as 0.029″/0.737 mm), enabling the downsizing of catheters to facilitate transradial intervention in a large subsets of patients. The IDS represents the first advance in coronary stent delivery since the introduction of rapid-exchange stent delivery systems >20 years ago. SLENDER IDS has demonstrated non-inferiority compared with commercial DES, excellent long-term safety and a potentially more efficient approach to PCI where patient comfort is enhanced, procedures are streamlined, and resource consumption is reduced. The operational period of the first generation of dedicated Space VLBI (SVLBI) missions commenced in 1997 with the launch of the Japan-led mission VSOP/HALCA and is coming to closure in 2019 with the completion of in-flight operations of the Russia-led mission RadioAstron. They were preceded by the SVLBI demonstration experiment with the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) in 1986–1988. While the comprehensive lessons learned from the first demonstration experiment and two dedicated SVLBI missions are still awaiting thorough attention, several preliminary conclusions can be made. Japan's second asteroid explorer Hayabusa2 was successfully launched on Dec 3, 2014, to return a sample from asteroid 162173 Ryugu by 2020. Four xenon ion thrusters based on electron cyclotron resonance discharge propelled the spacecraft for 547 h during its first year in space. Hayabusa2 completed an Earth gravity assist on Dec 3, 2015, followed by 798 and 2593 h of ion thruster operation, called the first and second transfer phases of delta-v, respectively. The third transfer phase of delta-v was conducted from Jan 10, 2018, to Jun 6, 2018, in which the final 2475-h ion thruster operation was executed before the rendezvous with Ryugu. The cumulative operating times for the four ion thrusters are 6,450, 11, 5,193, and 6418 h. This paper summarizes the 6515-h powered flight by the ion engine system, which produced 1015 m/s delta-v, in terms of thruster performance change, roll torques generated by various combinations of ion thrusters, and spacecraft surface erosion history measured by two quartz crystal microbalances located near the thrusters. In parallel with the space flight operation, an engineering model of the microwave discharge neutralizer has been under long-duration testing on the ground since 2012. Despite the growing penetration of smart meters and energy management systems in recent years, few tools have been proposed for energy demand data analysis and visualization to promote energy conservation in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In this paper, we propose a new method consisting of operating time estimation and simplified disaggregation based only on the SME's hourly electricity demand data and actual outdoor temperature data. The method first estimates the operating time using a self-organizing map, which categorizes the hourly data as operating, half-operating, or non-operating time and eliminates manual parameter adjustment that requires user trial and error. Then, using the estimated operating time, our simplified disaggregation method estimates hourly air conditioning (AC) demand considering the variation in each office's temperature at which air conditioners are switched on. The method was evaluated using a public business energy management system dataset from Japan, and the average errors of yearly AC demand estimation were better than 10%. The outputs of the proposed method may provide information that is more relevant, reliable, and specific to each customer and efficiently promote energy conservation measures in SMEs. Since the 1940s, researchers from the United States, France, Japan and other countries have carried out related researches. With the rapid development of steam-water separation technology, many scholars have carried out a large number of experiments, theoretical study and numerical calculations on this phenomenon. Based on the published papers, the research progress and significant achievements of the flow and rupture characteristics of the liquid film on corrugated plate wall are reviewed. In this paper we report results from a neutron irradiation campaign of Ultra-Fast Silicon Detectors (UFSD) with fluences of 1e14, 3e14, 6e14, 1e15, 3e15 and 6e15 neq/cm2. The UFSD used in this study are circular 50 μ m thick Low-Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGAD), with a 1.0 mm diameter active area. Hamamatsu Photonics (HPK), Japan, produced the UFSD with pre-irradiation internal gain in the range 5–70 depending on the bias voltage. The sensors were tested pre-irradiation and post-irradiation with minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) from a 90Sr β -source. The leakage current, internal gain and the timing resolution were measured as a function of bias voltage at −20 °C and −30 °C. The timing resolution of each device under test was extracted from the time difference with a second calibrated UFSD in coincidence, using the constant fraction discriminator (CFD) method for both. The dependence of the gain upon the irradiation fluence is consistent with the acceptor removal mechanism; at −20 °C the highest gain decreases from 70 before radiation to 2 after a fluence of 6e15 n/cm2. Consequently, the timing resolution was found to deteriorate from 20 ps to 50 ps. The results indicate that the most accurate time resolution is obtained varying with fluence the CFD value used to determine the time of arrival, from 0.1 for pre-irradiated sensors to 0.6 at the highest fluence. Key changes to the pulse shape induced by irradiation, i.e. (i) the contribution of charge multiplication not limited to the gain layer zone, (ii) the shortening of the rise time and (iii) the reduced pulse height, were compared with the WF2 simulation program and were found to be in agreement. On March 11, 2011, the Tohoku earthquake caused major damage to almost all public infrastructures including energy and water facilities in Fukushima Prefecture. Following the nuclear disaster, which lead to a shortage of energy, the government of Japan enacted new policy measures to redefine its energy-mix after its earlier commitment to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009 to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 25% from 1990 levels by 2020. In 2015, Japan ratified the Paris Accord and set a national greenhouse gas reduction goal - 26% below 2013 levels by 2030. To meet this requirement, Japan needs to restructure its current electricity consumption by identifying the optimal demand of electricity by households, commercial buildings, and public utilities. This calls for public infrastructures to manage their electricity consumption efficiently by adopting appropriate electricity conservation methods using precision monitoring systems. To support the policy of the government of Japan toward conservation of energy, in this paper, we outline the energy demand of a public utility system, namely a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, and based on the data obtained using an innovative information and communication technology (ICT) tool. Using the monitored data, we further predict the electricity demand for each process of the WWTP using a Markov switching model. These models have high repeatability of monitoring results for each process according to various indices. In our results, all R2 values were more than 0.8; mean absolute percentage error values were under 10% for total electricity consumption and the water treatment process, and the relative root mean square error rate of each process was under 20%. Based on the results, we developed a future electricity consumption prediction model for WWTP total electricity consumption and the consumption of each process. To investigate the characteristics of materials used as prostheses for microvascular decompression surgery (MVDs) in Japan and their possible adverse events (AEs) to determine preferable materials for MVDs. A questionnaire was sent to all members of the Japanese Society for MVDs, and answers were obtained from 59 institutions. Among a total of 2789 MVDs, 1088 operations for trigeminal neuralgia, 1670 for hemifacial spasm, and 31 others, including 117 reoperations, were performed between April 2011 and March 2014. Nonabsorbable material was used in 96.5% of MVDs, including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) (80.5%), polyurethane (11.9%), expanded PTFE (2.1%), and silk thread (1.47%). The use of absorbable materials, including fibrin glue (87.5%), cellulose (13.5%), gelatin (4,77%), and collagen (1.76%), was reported. The major combinations were PTFE with fibrin glue (58.7%) followed by PTFE alone (7.60%). Eighty-eight AEs in 85 (3.2%) cases were reported among 2672 first operations. AEs included 51 central nervous system dysfunctions, 15 wound infections/dehiscence, and 10 others, which were presumed to be related to the intraoperative procedure. Among relatively high-, moderate-, and low-volume centers, there were no significant differences in the frequency of AEs (P = 0.077). Tissue-prosthesis adhesion and/or granuloma formation were reported in 13 cases of 117 reoperations. The incidence of adhesion-related recurrence was 11.1% of all reoperations. The number of AEs was quite low in this survey, and intradural use of any prosthesis reported in this paper might be justified; however, further development of easily handled and less-adhesive prosthesis materials is awaited. A dietitian has qualifications in nutrition and dietetics and applies the science of food and nutrition to improve the health of individuals, groups, and communities. The Registered Dietitian (RD) credential has gained recognition over the years for its expertise. The accreditation systems were developed and have been used to ensure quality of this profession. Accreditation systems set standards for academic and professional training in nutrition and dietetics and reflect current research-based information. The purpose of this paper is to review a few countries that have a RD accreditation system including China and several other countries, e.g. the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom. In risk assessment of spatially distributed infrastructure, the probability of demand exceeding capacity is evaluated across the system. We describe and compare two levee system reliability analysis frameworks for seismic and high-water demands. The first approach is general, but computationally intensive, and uses Monte Carlo simulations to model capacity and demand for "segments" (i.e., elemental levee lengths) as spatially correlated random variables. We apply a capacity correlation model derived from seismic case histories in Japan. The seismic demand correlation model is based on global ground motion data, whereas the high-water correlation is taken as unity. The second approach achieves computational efficiency by grouping segments into physics-based "reaches" (i.e., length of levee having uniform statistical distributions of capacity and demand). Statistics and spatial correlation of the limit state function are computed using a procedure based on the first-order reliability method. The probability of failure of the reach is then computed using level-crossing statistics. The application of level crossing statistics required an adjustment, introduced here, to previously utilized capacity correlation functions. We apply both methods for a levee system subjected to realistic demand and capacity distributions and show that characteristic lengths (defined as lengths of levee that can be considered as statistically independent) are comparable for high-water and seismic demands. In nursery schools, influenza outbreaks have occurred every year. However, influenza characteristics of its diffusion among nursery schools, within each nursery school, and among classes of different ages in nursery schools remains unclear. This paper presents an examination of these matters using the Nursery School Absenteeism Surveillance System (NSASSy). All nursery schools in ward A in Tokyo introduced to the NSASSy in 2015. The study period was November 2015 through March 2016. The data of influenza patients were extracted from NSASSy. We examined four definitions of 'starting date of community outbreak' (SDCO) of influenza: 1) the first recorded day of influenza patients (SDCO1), 2) the last day of influenza patients recorded for two consecutive days (SDCO2), 3) three consecutive days (SDCO3), and 4) four consecutive days (SDCO4). We evaluated those four definitions by duration of the initial case at each nursery school from SDCO and evaluated the proportion of nursery schools at which the initial case occurred before SDCO. The average durations of initial cases at respective nursery schools from SDCO1–4 were 40.3, 26.3, 23.1 and 13.3 days. The respective proportions of nursery schools at which the initial case occurred before SDCO1–4 were 3.1%, 6.4%, 9.4% and 40.6%. Results demonstrate that SDCO3 is an appropriate definition of SDCO. The superconducting tokamak JT-60SA is currently being assembled at the QST laboratories in Naka (Japan). Within the European contribution in the framework of the Broader Approach, Spain has been responsible for providing JT-60SA cryostat. The cryostat is a large vacuum vessel made up of 304 stainless steel which encloses the tokamak providing the vacuum environment to reduce thermal loads on the components at cryogenic temperature. It must withstand the external atmospheric pressure during normal operation and the internal overpressure in case of an accident. Due to functional purposes, the cryostat has been divided in three assemblies: the Cryostat Base (CB), the Cryostat Vessel Body Cylindrical Section (CVBCS) and the Top Lid. For transport and assembly reasons the cryostat is made up of 20 main parts: 7 making up the CB and 13 making up the CVBCS (including the top lid). The joints between them rely on bolted flanges together with light seal welds, non-structural fillet welds performed from inside and/or outside of the cryostat. The single wall is externally reinforced with ribs to support the weight of all the ports and port plugs and also to withstand the vacuum pressure. The material is SS 304 (Co < 0.05 wt%) with a permeability (μ rel) below 1.1. The CVBCS made of a single wall is a stainless steel shell with a thickness of 34 mm. The CB was manufactured and assembled in-situ in 2013, while the CVBCS has been manufactured, assembled, measured by a Spanish company (ASTURFEITO S.A) and delivered to Japan in November 2017. Abstract The recent rapid promotion of renewable energy technology (RET) worldwide may have led to a greater social impact on local communities, where multiple otherwise-small individual units of RET are concentrated in one place, as may occur in the case of small photovoltaic power generating units, for example. This study examines such a case of the dissemination of innovative agrivoltaic systems (AVSs), a system in which photovoltaic power facilities are installed above cultivated farmland, across Japanese rural areas. The paper offers a preliminary sector-wide social impact scoping (SSIS) for potential cumulative social impact of a dissemination policy of AVSs. AVSs were predicted to positively impact many local stakeholders. It was found that AVSs themselves improve energy security as they are, but if particular devices are accommodated, energy security is further improved. Several measures, including providing information to farm operators regarding specific examples of favourable economic outcomes and good agricultural practices, are recommended to mitigate any negative impact of AVS installation. Policymakers should undertake SSIS for RET to reveal the variety of views among otherwise reticent stakeholders so that they can eventually increase the positive impact and mitigate the negative impact of RET. Conventional simplified analysis methods for seismic design of gravity-type quay wall are based on providing capacity to resist a design seismic force, but they do not provide information on the performance of a structure when the limit of the force-balance is exceeded. In order to overcome the limitation of conventional seismic design methods, a performance-based seismic coefficient (k hk) concept which can verify the performance of port structures exceeding the limit of force-balance was proposed in the technical standards and commentaries for port and harbour facilities in Japan, published in 2007. The k hk concept considers the deformation of the quay wall, the wall height, the effect of frequency characteristics and duration of the ground motions, and the natural period of the ground. This paper proposes a performance verification method for the gravity-type quay wall during earthquakes through dynamic centrifuge model tests. The centrifuge tests were used in the present study to validate the proposed k hk concept for evaluating the seismic performance of the quay wall under various conditions. The reliability of the k hk concept was evaluated for different wall heights, earthquake motions and the thickness of subsoil, which are the primary variables in the k hk equation. The Japanese higher education sector has seen increases in tuition with stagnant household incomes in a society where family support for university students has been the norm. Student loans from the government have grown rapidly to sustain the gradual increase in university enrolments. These time-based repayment loans (TBRLs) have created financial hardship for increasing numbers of loan recipients and their families. There is some evidence that prospective students from low-income households are forgoing a university education to avoid student loan debt. The Japanese government has introduced some measures including grants and a partial income-contingent loan (ICL) scheme to help alleviate these problems. While the ICL scheme is a positive development, this paper shows that it requires further refinement and broader coverage if it is to adequately address the challenges facing higher education financing in Japan. We show that an affordable and universal ICL system could be introduced in Japan that avoids problems with the current partial income-contingent loan scheme and would help alleviate access issues for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Importantly, the unique features of the Japanese labor market have to be carefully considered, especially the large gender wage gap for married women. By introducing dynamics into modeling graduate earnings and using carefully selected parameters, we show that it is possible to have a universal ICL which achieves a balance between access and affordable repayment with minimal long-run costs to taxpayers. Japan is a high tobacco burden country with over 20 million smokers in 2017. Tobacco control measures in Japan has been criticised as largely inadequate and ineffective despite ratifying the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in 2004. Numerous factors such as pro-tobacco legislators, regulatory oversight of the primary Japanese tobacco company from the Ministry of Finance and industry interference on the policy-making process in Japan have prevented aggressive tobacco control efforts. Given the intricate challenges in Japan, it is important to develop feasible and effective smoking cessation strategies. In this paper, we have analysed the trends in tobacco prices, sale and smoking prevalence, major tobacco/smoking policies and some of the industry-related challenges that have prevented the development of effective tobacco control measures in Japan. We have emphasised the need for stronger implementation of the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and its MPOWER policy package and to separate the tobacco industry from the tobacco control policymaking process to promote cessation and abstinence from smoking and better sensitisation against exposure to second-hand smoke. The introduction of autonomous buses and taxis is expected to generate such benefits as cost reductions—and particularly for regional bus operations with a substantial deficit—as well as enhancing public transit accessibility through decreased trip costs. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the impacts of introducing autonomous buses and taxis on metropolitan transportation systems by quantifying the costs of travel in Japan, and to discuss the potential benefits. First, this study sets the assumptions on autonomous driving technology, including its impacts on vehicle costs, the decreased labor costs for driving and safety monitoring in buses and taxis, and decreased driving stress for private car users. Next, operating costs are computed for autonomous buses and taxis in Japanese metropolitan areas. The costs of travel, or the sum of monetary and time costs, are then computed with and without vehicle automation for different trip types in high- and low-density metropolitan areas. The results highlight that the costs of public transit trips that currently have a smaller share of time costs in overall trip costs could decrease considerably due to vehicle automation. For instance, costs for 10–20-km trip lengths could decrease by 44–61% for taxi trips and 13–37% for rail/bus trips with taxi access, followed by a decrease of 6–11% for bus trips and 1–11% for rail trips with bus access. Further, private car trip costs could decrease by 11–16%. More substantial cost reductions in rail/bus trips with taxi access could occur in the case of smaller trip distances and/or in residential areas far from stations; larger reductions in rail trips with bus access could occur in low-density metropolitan areas. Finally, it is expected that vehicle automation in more fixed modes of public road transit could primarily benefit the transit industry and government, with such effects as improved labor productivity and reduced subsidies, while vehicle automation in more flexible modes could benefit metropolitan residents as well as the transit industry. Scintillation detectors are commonly used as radiation detectors. For the detection of heavy ions a non-linearity in scintillation light output is observed which is known as ionization quenching. In this paper we investigate whether the ionization quenching for BGO scintillators depends on temperature. This would impact the validity of ionization quenching correction models in temperature unstable environments. We measured temperature dependent light output curves for several ion species at different energies at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC), Japan. We find that the normalized temperature dependent light output curves show the same temperature dependence for all ion species and energies. Therefore, we conclude that the effect of ionization quenching in BGO is independent of temperature. Thus the temperature dependence of scintillation light output and the effect of ionization quenching are independent and can be separately correct by the already developed models for the scintillation light output of BGO. Since natural resources are finite, new policy instruments to sustain the most efficient processes of waste recycling are required in all countries. To this end, it is critical to explore all technology mechanisms underlying solid waste researchers and practitioners' behaviors. The study focuses on to demonstrate the importance of knowledge diffusion between the source and destination of environmental innovations. This way, policymakers can elaborate opportune strategies to improve the efficiency of innovation activities. By analyzing a sample of 240 large international firms from the USA, Japan, and Europe, this paper discusses the extent to which innovation inputs, research and development, and relative technological spillovers affect environmental innovation—that is measured by the number of waste recycle and land fertilizers patents. The novelty of the study comes from introducing a knowledge production function approach to analyze the role of technological knowledge spillovers on waste recycling and land fertilizers efficiency at the firm level. The technological relatedness between the firms is computed through technological proximity, based on the construction of technological vectors for each firm. The results reveal a significant positive impact of external spillovers on firms' environmental innovation levels. This finding is important particularly in terms of policy implications concerning industrial strategies; as in order to improve environmental innovation, incentives that favor industrial relatedness and establishing integration between firms are crucial. Abstract In the more than 40 years of operational history of pressurized water reactors (PWRs) in Japan, sustainable development of water chemistry technologies has resulted in the world's highest secondary system component integrity; additionally, secondary system components, especially steam generator (SG) tubing, with excellent material integrity have been developed to prevent leakage of radioactive contamination from the primary to the secondary system and to maintain the heat removal function of the secondary system. Although reasonable control and diagnostic parameters for water chemistry are utilized by each PWR owner, the specific values are not shared. To ensure reliable PWR operation and to achieve the highest safety level, relevant members of the Standards Committee and the related committee organized by the Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ) decided to establish water chemistry guidelines for PWRs. The Japanese PWR secondary water chemistry guidelines provide strategies for improving material integrity and the heat removal function. The guidelines also provide reasonable "action levels" for control parameters and "control values" and "diagnostic values" for multiple parameters, and they stipulate the responses when these levels are exceeded. Specifically, "conditioning parameters" are adopted in the guidelines. Good operational practice conditions are also discussed with reference to long-term experience. This paper introduces the purpose, technical background and framework of preliminary secondary water chemistry guidelines for Japanese PWRs. Addition, the differences in bases of parameter settings between the Japanese and overseas guidelines are discussed. • Four key phenological transition dates in central and northern Japan were evaluated. • AHI phenological transition dates were evaluated against those from MODIS and PEN. • The uncertainty in AHI phenological transition dates differ between Spring and Fall. The Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard the recently launched next generation geostationary satellite, Himawari-8, provides an opportunity to improve Land Surface Phenology (LSP) detections over the Asia-Pacific region. In this paper, we detected four phenological transition dates (PTDs) using the three-day Two-band Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI2) time series from AHI based on the Hybrid Piecewise Logistic Model-Land Surface Phenology Detection (HPLM-LSPD) algorithm. The four PTDs are Start of Spring (SOS), End of Spring (EOS), Start of Fall (SOF) and End of Fall (SOF). We evaluated the four AHI-derived PTDs against those detected using eight-day EVI2 time series from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the polar-orbiting satellite Terra, and three-day Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC) time series from the Phenological Eyes Network (PEN) at six sites in central and northern Japan. The evaluation was performed by conducting regression analyses, and calculating root mean square difference (RMSD) and bias between satellite- and PEN-derived PTDs. First, the difference in the spatial variations of SOS and EOF timing between naturally vegetated areas, and urban areas and croplands indicates the anthropogenic footprints on LSP. Second, the RMSD of either AHI PTDs or MODIS PTDs against PEN PTDs were higher in the fall (i.e., SOF and EOF) than those in spring (i.e., SOS and EOS). Third, the later EOS and earlier SOF derived from satellite EVI2 relative to those derived from PEN GCC might be caused by the difference in the sensitivity of GCC and EVI2 to the increases in leaf area index (LAI) over high-LAI canopies. Fourth, the higher temporal resolution of AHI EVI2 only helped reduce the RMSD during spring compared to the RMSD for MODIS. In contrast, the RMSD for AHI PTDs and MODIS PTDs were comparable in fall. Finally, the between-sensor correlation in the spatiotemporal variability of the four PTDs was higher for SOS and EOF than those for EOS and SOF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Novel internal heat integrated distillation column with discrete heat exchange manner. • World's first commercial application of HIDiC technology. • Demonstration of energy conservation through commercially operated column. • Verification of the effect of heat allocation among the side heat exchangers to the energy conservation. The design procedure developed for a new type of heat-integrated distillation column was verified through the operation data of a commercial plant. In a conventional heat-integrated distillation column (HIDiC), optimal heat exchange cannot be achieved because the heat exchange between the rectifying section and the stripping section is executed through the wall at the same elevation physically. We have proposed a new process structure in which the heat exchange is executed between several pairs of stages in the rectifying and stripping sections; such a heat-integrated distillation column is hereafter called the discrete HIDiC (D-HIDiC). The energy-saving performance of D-HIDiC depends on the compositions to supply/remove the heat, the selection of the pair of stages to be heat-exchanged and the amount of heat transferred at each heat exchanger. We have developed a new graphical design procedure for D-HIDiC, in which a plausible design is interactively derived by using H-xy and T - xy diagram that is an extension of Ponchon–Savarit H-xy diagram. The proposed design procedure was applied to a design problem of a commercially operating column at Maruzen Petrochemical, Japan, and the existing column was replaced with a newly installed D-HIDiC. Through stable operation since August in 2016, it was verified that more than 55% energy conservation to the conventional distillation column could be achieved. In this paper, further energy conservation by modifying the operation condition is discussed. The heat allocations to side heat exchangers have been changed by referring to the design result on the proposed H-xy and T-xy diagram. As the adiabatic efficiency of the compressor was decreased in comparison to the original operation mode, the improvement of energy-saving was not so large. However, assuming the same adiabatic efficiency of the compressor, the simulation result has shown much better energy conservation compared to the original operation mode. Real operation data and simulation result demonstrated that the appropriate side heat exchanger allocation could achieve higher energy conservation. This paper evaluates domestic and foreign patent portfolios owned by ten top competitors in Japan on the optical lenses of digital cameras. The objective is to establish an efficient and simple tool to provide an enterprise with the ability to investigate its competing position in order to identify its favorable research and development directions and enhance its patent application strategy. The method is to use three quantitative indicators defined by patent classifications, especially the Japanese patent classification F-term. The indicators represent the technical value of a single invention, between multiple inventions, and all inventions, respectively. Comparison of all aspects of values between Japanese and US patent portfolios are presented on two-dimensional maps. The evaluations show the performance of competitors and obtain the advisements of patent application strategy for an individual company. The results show that Jaccard index based on F-term is a very good tool for calculating the similarity between patents to obtain innovativeness. All indicators show that the thinking of Japanese competitors in R&D and patent filing strategies have high similarity, and there is currently no breakthrough between all competitors. The multi-viewpoint F-term system has resulted in Japanese companies having a large number of patents in a relatively closed environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many embankments have been constructed in Japan, but most have lacked seismic design, except for important embankments, such as earth dams. However, because embankments are often damaged by large earthquakes, seismic inspections have recently been carried out on existing embankments, and countermeasures have been taken to deal with unstable embankments. This paper describes the seismic inspection methods and countermeasures currently implemented in Japan for river dikes, tailings dams, and embanked residential lands. River dikes are dangerous when they subside and their crests become lower than the river water levels. Therefore, seismic inspections are being carried out using a simple static method to analyze the amount of subsidence against level 2 seismic motion. Countermeasures are being taken, such as compacting the ground under the vicinity of the toe of a dike. For tailings dams, dynamic analysis is performed for level 2 seismic motion, and seismic inspection is performed based on the amount of slip displacement. As countermeasures, solidification etc. have been implemented. There are 51,306 large residential areas embanked in hilly valleys in Japan. Soil investigations and stability analyses will be conducted in these areas as secondary screenings, and these areas are currently being prioritized for such screenings. Box-jacking as a tunnelling method has gained popularity in recent years for locating underground utilities and infrastructure. Nevertheless, the employment of this technique still poses challenges, particularly in predicting the jacking force of long drives. Accurate prediction of jacking force is highly desirable for anomaly detection, avoiding thrust overload limits, and protecting the box culverts and launch shafts from damage. However, such a prediction entails accounting for numerous factors, including site geology, lubricated overcut, work stoppages, deviations in alignment, and the driving style of the tunnel boring machine. In this paper, technical details of a Japan box-jacking project totalling over 220 m in length are discussed, with a focus on elucidating the relationship between tunnelling parameters and jacking force. Then, calculating approaches for forecasting jacking force during curved box-jacking are introduced. The modified Box-soil-lubricant contact model based on the analysis of tunnelling parameters is adopted for this purpose which can improve the accuracy of forecasts. Forecasts determined by the proposed approach are appraised through comparisons to predictions obtained using the PBK method currently utilized in industry. The results show that the proposed approach provides better forecasts of the monitored field data and highlight the significance of interpreting field data as a valuable tool for assimilating the experience with box-jacking in various ground conditions. Following the severe accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011, recrystallized FeCrAl-ODS claddings have been developed in Japan as an accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) to mitigate the extent of oxidation reactions with hot steam. This paper presents an overview of the alloy design and the process used to manufacture the recrystallized cladding, together with a analysis of the applicability of these alloys as BWR fuel cladding and a summary of the results of simulated severe accident performance. A synergistic effect of co-addition of 12 mass% Cr and 6 mass% Al was found to suppress steam oxidation by a stable Al 2 O 3 scale formation and to inhibit a brittle αʹ precipitate after aging. The incorporation of 0.4 mass% Zr greatly improved not only the high temperature strength by replacing coarse Y-Al oxide particles with finer Y-Zr particles, but also the oxidation resistance at temperatures above 1673 K. These excellent performances are associated with the excess oxygen content. It was verified that core excess reactivities affected by the increased neutron absorption by Fe, Cr, Al can be compensated by reducing the thickness to half that of Zircaloy cladding, while maintaining mechanical integrity. A simulated design basis Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA) event with assessment of post-LOCA ductility confirmed that FeCrAl-ODS cladding provided a greater safety margin along with exceptional high temperature strength and a significantly higher integral LOCA burst temperature compared with wrought FeCrAl alloy (C26M) and Zircaloy. An analysis using the MAAP 5.05b SA code indicated that melting of the Zircaloy core could be slightly accelerated due to release of the huge amount of exothermic reaction heat in the case of small amount of coolant injection. The development of new technologies leads to the extensive use of abiotic resources and possible disruptions in the supply of material due to political, economic, and environmental reasons. To understand the impact of such disruptions on the economy, a comprehensive criticality assessment is necessary. As Japan is the third largest economy globally and heavily reliant of imports, the criticality of abiotic resources might become a pressing issue. However, previous criticality assessments of Japan have been limited in scope, failing to assess the overall supply disruption risks. Thus, this paper aims at identifying critical aspects of 35 abiotic materials used in the Japanese economy using the SCARCE method – an approach considering supply risk, vulnerability, social and environmental aspects to comprehensively analyse criticality. In the context of supply risk and vulnerability, the minerals niobium and phosphorus have been identified as the most critical. The criticality of niobium can be attributed to its significant trade barriers and production concentration, while that of phosphorus is primarily influenced by its high demand and lack of substitutes. Gold is the material with the highest criticality from environmental point of view due to the environmental implications related to its production. In the social context, the most critical mineral is antimony due to high level of small-scale and artisanal mining. In addition to the Japanese criticality, the results reflect the global one, showing the materials globally less critical and thus especially relevant to the Japanese economy. Next to providing results of 35 materials for evaluating their role in the Japanese economy, the underlying Python code is provided for adaptation for further criticality assessments of other regions. This paper presents an extensive experimental study on the resistance and propulsion characteristics of the Japan Bulk Carrier in off-design conditions. The experimental campaign is carried out for a ship model at a scale of 40.264 for three loading conditions. Resistance, open water, and self-propulsion tests were performed at the Brodarski Institute for a wide range of speeds. Four extrapolation methods, based on different assumptions, were applied to predict the resistance and propulsion characteristics of the full-scale ship from model-scale experiments. The differences between the results obtained by different extrapolation methods and the effect of loading conditions on ship resistance and propulsion characteristics are discussed. Since the turn of the millennium, digitalisation has not only radically changed economies across the world but also allowed for the rise and proliferation of digital platforms. While clearly adaptable, a perception has emerged that existing competition laws are inadequate to accommodate tech giants' unique market positions and market power, feeding calls to not rely solely on these. The European Union (EU) has replied by adopting the Digital Markets Act (DMA), allowing for the designation of digital gatekeepers based on turnover and user numbers. In contrast, Asian countries like Korea and Japan have opted to rely on the notion of 'superior bargaining power' to check market power in the digital realm. While serving the same objective, the Asian approach differs by replacing the need to identify dominance as a precondition for enforcement actions. In contrast, the DMA will be applicable on an ex-ante basis but allow for concurrent policing under traditional competition law ex-post. This paper explores the matter of market power in the digital sphere and the different paths chosen to control it in Europe and Asia, focusing on the example of Korea with respect to the latter. Through a comparative study, we conclude that they are perhaps less different than initially perceived, diverging mostly in their form rather than their content or reach. However, the DMA also serves to suppress the proliferation of national legislation thwarting the European Single Market and debasing competition law.
