25. It Takes Different Furniture.

Abstract

The article discusses the trends in the U.S. furniture market as of February 1953. It notes that modern furniture designs accounted for 64.6 percent of exhibits at the January 1953 market while traditional-designed pieces dropped to 29.6 percent. Designers assert that modern furniture evokes less emotional trauma among buyers compared to modern architectural designs for houses. In responding to the housing trends, furniture makers adjusted by creating designs that are fit for the smaller spaces and open floor plans common in new home architecture.

Abstract

Three groups of freshman architecture and design students were assigned different design approaches before producing a handcarving from a six-inch wood cube. The problem is the first three-dimensional one in the design curriculum. One approach was to work directly in the wood; the second was to draw a transparent grain structure diagram of the intact cube before carving; the third was to make a series of charcoal sketches of a possible design before carving. Contrary to prediction, the three approaches did not affect direct measures of the handcarving. However, as anticipated, the measures on the handcarvings had different correlational patterns with previous design work: Scores on handcarvings of the charcoal sketches group were significantly correlated with previous design grades whereas scores for the other groups were not. These and other results raise questions about strategies for helping students to develop critical judgment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article evaluates the representation of American architecture in the present world. The author asserts that architecture is an unusual art because it is made out of buildings that are erected for practical social purposes. He contends that the pragmatism of architecture may that of supplying emotion in a memorial or at a shrine, of helping to induce the appropriate reverence and mystery in a church, of providing healthful conditions of light, air and sound in a schoolhouse or factory.

Abstract

This article presents studies on school illumination. Researchers show an outline of physical, pathological and physiological effects of light or visible radiation upon the eye. Illumination, vision, and ocular fatigue are important factors in the health of the child and likewise in his school progress. The American Recommended Practice of School Lighting called for a substantial increase in lighting standards. The amount of natural light available in the classroom may depend on weather conditions, architectural design, orientation, fenestration, or by the window blinds used. A majority of the classrooms receive its natural light through windows. The type of glass used and the location and design of the windows are therefore important in illumination.

Abstract

This series of five papers translated from Russian discusses the problems that face the designer of housing in northern areas of the USSR, which are not dissimilar from those occurring in Canada. Existing designs are appraised and their limitations discussed in terms of room layout, window arrangement and their general adaptability to local climatic conditions. The effect of wind in the winter on the thermal performance of housing and on snow accumulation around buildings has received particular emphasis, and methods of modifying these effects by proper design and ventilation are analyzed. Papers included are: "Plans of housing units for the Far East", "The special characteristics of planning and construction in the Far North", "Methods of construction for protection against the wind", "On a housing standard for the Arctic" and "The need for satisfactory sets of standard housing and design for regions with a severe climate".

Abstract

In this paper, an attempt has been made to arrange into a consistent theoretical framework the presently available knowledge concerning the decomposition and combustion of cellulosic materials in unconfined spaces and in compartments. The work was undertaken primarily to obtain a better insight into the phenomena that take place during compartment fires and thus, perhaps, to find design methods for minimizing structural fire damage. It has been proved that the use of fire-resistant elements for compartment boundaries may not be necessary at all to avoid possible serious structural damages. In fact, much more can be achieved by deliberate design, namely by finding the correct relations between fire load, compartment height and ventilation openings, than by the use of extra insulation on the key load-bearing components or by the installation of protective devices. The purpose of the paper was to examine the problem of compartment fires solely from the point of view of structural fire protection. THE FIRST PHASE OF THIS GIANT JET-AGE AIRPORT COMPLEX WAS DEDICATED ON SEPTEMBER 22, 1973. THE FOUR AIR TERMINAL BUILDINGS AND THEIR ADJACENT ELEVATED ROADWAYS AND PARKING FACILITIES MAKE EXTENSIVE USE OF PRECAST AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE, ALL EXPOSED BUFF-COLORED CONCRETE WITH A SANDBLASTED TEXTURED FINISH. OVER 12,000 PIECES OF PRECAST CONCRETE WERE USED IN THE BUILDINGS AND 8,000 PIECES IN THE ELEVATED ROADWAYS. THE TERMINAL BUILDINGS ARE SEMICIRCULAR IN PLAN BUT ARE DEVELOPED FROM RECTANGULAR TWO-STORY MODULES CONSISTING OF PRECAST COLUMNS, PRESTRESSED BEAMS, DOUBLE-TEE FLOORS, AND PRECAST WALL PANELS USING WELDED CONNECTIONS. THE MEMBERS ARE GIVEN ADDITIONAL STABILITY BY POST-TENSIONING. THE ELEVATED ROADWAYS FOLLOW THE CURVE OF THE BUILDINGS AND MATCH THEIR ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN.
