The objective of this work was to investigate the influence of hydrogen bonds between fibres on static and dynamic strength properties of paper. A commercial bleached pinewood kraft pulp was soaked in water, refined in a PFI, and used to form paper webs in different solvents, such as water, methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and n-butanol, to determine the effect of their dipole moment on static and dynamic strength properties of resulting paper sheets. Paper which was formed in water, being the solvent of the highest dipole moment among the tested ones, showed the highest breaking length and tear resistance. When paper webs were formed in n-butanol, which was the least polar among the solvents, these parameters were reduced by around 75%. These results provide evidence of the importance of water in paper web formation and strong impact of hydrogen bonds between fibres on strength properties of paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Due to their widespread applications, the production and consumption of plastics have increased sharply and also brought about a lot of waste. However, only one-fourth of plastic solid waste is effectively recycled, and the rest is almost entirely disposed in landfills. In this article, high performance synthetic paper used for printing was successfully prepared from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene waste adopting thermally induced phase separation method. Silicon dioxide was added as filler and mineral oil was used as diluent. Whiteness, chemical resistance, tensile strength, thermal stability, surface morphology, and inkjet print of synthetic paper was investigated, respectively. It is indicated that the resulting synthetic paper possesses excellent printing effect. Its whiteness equally distributes around 80% and the highest tensile strength is up to 5.5 MPa. They also reveal good resistance to chemical corrosion and have good shape maintenance. As a result, the preparation of high performance synthetic paper for industrial applicability is expected to perform by recycling plastics waste. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can evolve in a viable technology if environmentally sound materials are developed and became available at low cost for these devices. This is especially important not only for the designing of large wastewater treatment systems, but also for the fabrication of low-cost, single-use devices. In this work we synthesized membranes by a simple procedure involving easily-biodegradable and economic materials such as poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), chitosan (CS) and the composite PVA:CS. Membranes were chemical and physically characterized and compared to Nafion®. Performance was studied using the membrane as separator in a typical H-Type MFCs showing that PVA:CS membrane outperform Nafion® 4 times (power production) while being 75 times more economic. We found that performance in MFC depends over interactions among several membrane characteristics such as oxygen permeability and ion conductivity. Moreover, we design a paper-based micro-scale MFC, which was used as a toxicity assay using 16 μL samples containing formaldehyde as a model toxicant. The PVA:CS membrane presented here can offer low environmental impact and become a very interesting option for point of need single-use analytical devices, especially in low-income countries where burning is used as disposal method, and toxic fluoride fumes (from Nafion®) can be released to the environment. Biosensors have emerged as a valuable tool with high specificity and sensitivity for fast and reliable detection of hazardous substances in drinking water. Numerous substances have been addressed using synthetic biology approaches. However, many proposed biosensors are based on living, genetically modified organisms and are therefore limited in shelf life, usability and biosafety. We addressed these issues by the construction of an extensible, cell-free biosensor. Storage is possible through freeze drying on paper. Following the addition of an aqueous sample, a highly efficient cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) reaction is initiated. Specific allosteric transcription factors modulate the expression of ‘superfolder’ green fluorescent protein (sfGFP) depending on the presence of the substance of interest. The resulting fluorescence intensities are analyzed with a conventional smartphone accompanied by simple and cheap light filters. An ordinary differential equitation (ODE) model of the biosensors was developed, which enabled prediction and optimization of performance. With an optimized cell-free biosensor based on the Shigella flexneri MerR transcriptional activator, detection of 6 μg/L Hg(II) ions in water was achieved. Furthermore, a completely new biosensor for the detection of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a substance used as date-rape drug, was established by employing the naturally occurring transcriptional repressor BlcR from Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Questioned documents analysis includes: handwriting comparison, analysis of the ink and the printer used in the production of the documents, and the physical and chemical characterization of the cellulosic substrate (paper) of the documents. In many situations in life, for financial, social, and personal concerns, we depend on different documents. Therefore, over time, various analytical methods have been developed in order to determine their authenticity, source, and age or to differentiate various papers. In this study a quantitative analytical method for the determination of eight trace level chemical elements (Al, Ba, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Sr, Zn) from document paper samples using inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS) was validated and applied. The evaluation of the performance parameters of the method (applicability, fitness for purpose, linearity, working range, limit of detection and limit of quantification, sensitivity, accuracy, and precision) was accomplished. When young children do not receive adequate amounts of the micronutrient iodine in their diet, their growth and cognitive development can be impaired. Nearly every country in the world has programs in place to track iodine intake and provide supplemental iodine if needed, usually in the form of fortified salt. The iodine nutrition status of a population can be tracked by monitoring iodine levels in urine samples to see if the median value falls in the range of 100–300 micrograms of iodine per liter of urine (μg I/L), which indicates adequate or more than adequate iodine nutrition. Many low and middle-income countries (LMIC) do not have a laboratory capable of carrying out this challenging assay, so samples must be sent out for assay in external labs, which is expensive and time-consuming. In most LMIC, population iodine surveys are carried out every 5–10 years, which limits the utility of the data for program monitoring and evaluation. To solve this problem, we developed a field-friendly paper test card that uses the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction to measure urinary iodine levels. A blind internal validation study showed that 93% of samples (n = 60) of iodide in an artificial urine matrix were categorized correctly by visual analysis as deficient, adequate, or excessive for levels set forth by the World Health Organization. Quantitative measurements based on computer image analysis had an error of 40 ± 20 μg I/L (n = 35 for samples in the calibration range) and these results categorized 88% of the samples (n = 60) correctly. We employed lifecycle analysis principles to address the known toxicity of arsenic, which is an obligatory reagent in the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction. Disposal of the cards in a landfill (their most likely destination after use) could let arsenic leach into groundwater; toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests showed that the level of arsenic leached from the cards was 28.78 ppm, which is above the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s limit of 5 parts per million for solid waste. We integrated a remediation module into the card. This module contains oxone, to oxidize As(III) to As(V) oxyacids, and the iron oxide goethite. TCLP testing showed that the leachable amount of arsenic was reduced by at least 97.6%—from 28.8 ppm to lower than 0.7 ± 0.7 ppm (n = 20). Neodymium magnets have been in use as a mounting technique for works of art on paper for several years; however, the method is still in its infancy. These very strong magnets provide a valuable addition to the traditional methods of mounting artworks on paper and objects made from paper, textile, or other materials for exhibitions. They offer an interesting and elegant alternative to attachment with adhesives, especially when adhesives may not or cannot be applied to the original work. This article addresses the physical properties and manufacture of the magnets, including their coatings and nomenclature. Three successful case studies of mounting artworks on paper with these 'super magnets' are presented here. In addition, the limits and possible difficulties of working with neodymium magnets are addressed, as well as precautionary measures to take when handling them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study first describes the variations in concentrations of 12 chemical elements in groundwater relative to salinity levels in Southern Quebec (Canada) groundwater systems, and then uses this data to develop an empirical predictive model for evaluating groundwater chemical composition relative to salinity levels. Data is drawn from a large groundwater chemistry database containing 2608 samples. Eight salinity classes were established from lowest to highest chloride (Cl) concentrations. Graphical analyses were applied to describe variations in major, minor, and trace element concentrations relative to salinity levels. Results show that the major elements were found to be dominant in the lower salinity classes, whereas Cl becomes dominant at the highest salinity classes. For each of the major elements, a transitional state was identified between domination of the major elements and domination of Cl. This transition occurred at a different level of salinity for each of the major elements. Except for Si, the minor elements Ba, B, and Sr generally increase relative to the increase of Cl. The highest Mn concentrations were found to be associated with only the highest levels of Cl, whereas F was observed to be more abundant than Mn. Based on this analysis of the data, a correlation table was established between salinity level and concentrations of the chemical constituents. We thus propose a predictive empirical model, identifying a profile of the chemical composition of groundwater relative to salinity levels, to help homeowners and groundwater managers evaluate groundwater quality before resorting to laborious and costly laboratory analyses. White birch (Betula papyrifera) is a dominant tree species of the Boreal Forest. Recent studies have shown that it is fairly resistant to heavy metal contamination, specifically to nickel. Knowledge of regulation of genes associated with metal resistance in higher plants is very sketchy. Availability and annotation of the dwarf birch (B. nana) enables the use of high throughout sequencing approaches to understanding responses to environmental challenges in other Betula species such as B. papyrifera. The main objectives of this study are to 1) develop and characterize the B. papyrifera transcriptome, 2) assess gene expression dynamics of B. papyrifera in response to nickel stress, and 3) describe gene function based on ontology. Nickel resistant and susceptible genotypes were selected and used for transcriptome analysis. A total of 208,058 trinity genes were identified and were assembled to 275,545 total trinity transcripts. The transcripts were mapped to protein sequences and based on best match; we annotated the B. papyrifera genes and assigned gene ontology. In total, 215,700 transcripts were annotated and were compared to the published B. nana genome. Overall, a genomic match for 61% transcripts with the reference genome was found. Expression profiles were generated and 62,587 genes were found to be significantly differentially expressed among the nickel resistant, susceptible, and untreated libraries. The main nickel resistance mechanism in B. papyrifera is a downregulation of genes associated with translation (in ribosome), binding, and transporter activities. Five candidate genes associated to nickel resistance were identified. They include Glutathione S–transferase, thioredoxin family protein, putative transmembrane protein and two Nramp transporters. Simple Summary: This paper presents a novel approach to produce virtual contrast enhanced (VCE) images for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) without the use of contrast agents, which carry certain risks. This model uses pixelwise gradient term to capture the shape and a GAN terms to capture the texture of the real contrast enhanced T1C images With similar accuracy to existing models, our method shows an advantage in reproducing texture closer to the realistic contrast-enhanced images. This results are tested by various measures, including mean absolute error (MAE), mean square error (MSE) and structural similarity index (SSIM) for similarity accuracy; total mean square variation per mean intensity (TMSVPMI), the total absolute vari-ation per mean intensity (TAVPMI), Tenengrad function per mean intensity (TFPMI) and variance function per mean intensity (VFPMI) Various variations of the model, including fine-tuning of the hyperparameters, normalization methods on the images and using single modality, have also been investigated to test the optimal performance. Background: The development of advanced computational models for medical imaging is crucial for improving diagnostic accuracy in healthcare. This paper introduces a novel approach for virtual contrast enhancement (VCE) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), particularly focusing on nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). Methods: The proposed model, Pixelwise Gradient Model with GAN for Virtual Contrast Enhancement (PGMGVCE), makes use of pixelwise gradient methods with Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to enhance T1-weighted (T1-w) and T2-weighted (T2-w) MRI images. This approach combines the benefits of both modalities to simulate the effects of gadolinium-based contrast agents, thereby reducing associated risks. Various modifications of PGMGVCE, including changing hyperparameters, using normalization methods (z-score, Sigmoid and Tanh) and training the model with T1-w or T2-w images only, were tested to optimize the model's performance. Results: PGMGVCE demonstrated a similar accuracy to the existing model in terms of mean absolute error (MAE) (8.56 ± 0.45 for Li's model; 8.72 ± 0.48 for PGMGVCE), mean square error (MSE) (12.43 ± 0.67 for Li's model; 12.81 ± 0.73 for PGMGVCE) and structural similarity index (SSIM) (0.71 ± 0.08 for Li's model; 0.73 ± 0.12 for PGMGVCE). However, it showed improvements in texture representation, as indicated by total mean square variation per mean intensity (TMSVPMI) (0.124 ± 0.022 for ground truth; 0.079 ± 0.024 for Li's model; 0.120 ± 0.027 for PGMGVCE), total absolute variation per mean intensity (TAVPMI) (0.159 ± 0.031 for ground truth; 0.100 ± 0.032 for Li's model; 0.153 ± 0.029 for PGMGVCE), Tenengrad function per mean intensity (TFPMI) (1.222 ± 0.241 for ground truth; 0.981 ± 0.213 for Li's model; 1.194 ± 0.223 for PGMGVCE) and variance function per mean intensity (VFPMI) (0.0811 ± 0.005 for ground truth; 0.0667   ± 0.006 for Li's model; 0.0761   ± 0.006 for PGMGVCE). Conclusions: PGMGVCE presents an innovative and safe approach to VCE in MRI, demonstrating the power of deep learning in enhancing medical imaging. The history of chemistry has not once seen representations of the periodic system that have not received proper attention or recognition. The present paper is dedicated to a nearly unknown version of the periodic table published on the occasion of the centenary celebration of Mendeleev's birth (1934) by V. Romanoff. His periodic table visually merges Werner's and Janet's periodic tables and it is essentially the spiral periodic system on a plane. In his 1934 paper, Romanoff was the first one to introduce the idea of the actinide series, a decade before Glenn T. Seaborg, the renowned creator of the actinide concept. As a consequence, another most outstanding thing about Romanoff's paper occurs towards its very end: he essentially predicted the discovery of elements #106, #111 and #118. He theorized that, had uranium not been the "creative limit", we would have met element #106, a "legal" member of group 6, element #111, a precious metal, "super-gold" and element #118, a noble gas. In 2019, we take it for granted that elements #106, #111 and #118 indeed exist and they are best known as seaborgium, roentgenium and oganesson. It is fair to say that Romanoff's success with the prediction of correct placement and chemical properties of seaborgium, roentgenium and oganesson was only made possible due to the introduction of an early version of the actinide series that only had four elements at that time. Sadly, while Professor Romanoff was imprisoned (1938–1943), two new elements, neptunium (element #93) and plutonium (element #94) were discovered. While Professor Romanoff was in exile in Ufa (1943–1953), six further elements were added to the periodic table: americium (element #95), curium (element #96), berkelium (element #97), californium (element #98), einsteinium (element #99) and fermium (element #100). The next year after his death, in 1955, mendelevium (element #101), was discovered. Romanoff's version of the periodic table is an unparalleled precursor to the contemporary periodic table, and is an example of extraordinary anticipation of the discovery of new chemical elements. The nucleosynthesis of chemical elements has been established to be the result of a variety of different types of nuclear reactions in stars. Under the extreme temperatures and densities encountered in such environments, nuclear isomers can be populated and thus complicate our understanding of these processes. The purpose of the research is to justify the method of physical modeling of sprinkling for the study of water-induced soil erosion. The paper presents technical solutions for the laboratory installation that provide modeling of natural precipitation. The research deals with the method of sprinkling runoff sites based on the criteria of similitude using a portable sprinkler. The results of the experiments to study soil absorbing capacity, removal of chemical elements, cumulative soil washout for various degrees of protective plant cover were obtained. The criteria of similitude allow to use the data obtained during sprinkling run off sites for modeling natural rains. A system capable of biocatalytic conversion of distributed sources of single carbon gases such as carbon monoxide into hydrocarbons can be highly beneficial for developing commercially viable biotechnology applications in alternative energy. Several anaerobic bacterial strains can be used for such conversion. The anaerobic carbon monoxide-fixing bacteria Clostridium ljungdahlii OTA1 is a model CO assimilating microorganism that currently requires cryogenic temperature for storage of the viable strains. If these organisms can be stabilized and concentrated in thin films in advanced porous materials, it will enable development of high gas fraction, biocomposite absorbers with elevated carbon monoxide (CO) mass transfer rate, that require minimal power input and liquid, and demonstrate elevated substrate consumption rate compared to conventional suspended cell bioreactors. We report development of a technique for dry-stabilization of C. ljungdahlii OTA1 on a paper biocomposite. Bacterial samples coated onto paper were desiccated in the presence of trehalose using convective drying and stored at 4°C. Optimal dryness was ~1g H2O per gram of dry weight (gDW). CO uptake directly following biocomposite rehydration steadily increases over time indicating immediate cellular metabolic recovery. A high-resolution Raman microspectroscopic hyperspectral imaging technique was employed to spatially quantify the residual moisture content. We have demonstrated for the first time that convectively dried and stored C. ljungdahlii strains were stabilized in a desiccated state for over 38 days without a loss in CO absorbing reactivity. The Raman hyperspectral imaging technique described here is a non-invasive characterization tool to support development of dry-stabilization techniques for microorganisms on inexpensive porous support materials. The present study successfully extends and implements the principles of dry-stabilization for preservation of strictly anaerobic bacteria as an alternative to lyophilization or spray drying that could enable centralized biocomposite biocatalyst fabrication and decentralized bioprocessing of CO to liquid fuels or chemicals. This paper examines the identification of chemical elements using mineral analysis, focusing on the controversy surrounding the "tantalum metals" between 1801 and 1866. Of these metals, only tantalum and niobium are still recognised as elements today; the discovery claims of columbium, pelopium, ilmenium and dianium were all retracted or refuted. Despite the theoretical and institutional changes that chemistry underwent during this time, the debates on the tantalum metals point towards a continuity in the identification of metals. For most of the nineteenth century, chemists continued to use the same types of analytical procedures as their mid-eighteenth-century predecessors. These analytical methods enabled the identification of metals based on the chemical behaviour of their compounds, without requiring their isolation in the form of simple substances (that is, as metals). Accordingly, the central questions in all of the debates on the tantalum metals were the correct identification of the properties of compounds and the elimination of impurities, rather than the simplicity of the new metals. The story of the tantalum metals therefore illustrates the fact that, despite the definition of chemical elements as simple substances, the discovery of new (metallic) elements only rarely coincided with the isolation of new simple substances. Nitrogen is one of the most abundant chemical elements on the Earth and plays an important role in global environmental change. Leading Earth system models include coupled carbon and nitrogen cycle modules of varying complexity, but the INM RAS climate model family has not yet included an explicit N-cycle description. This paper presents a parameterization of the terrestrial N-cycle based on a simplification of the JULES-CN model, adapted for coupled use with the INM-CM land C-cycle module. Numerical simulations were carried out with a standalone carbon cycle model with nitrogen feedback disabled and enabled versions for the period 1850–2100. The simulated global pools show good agreement with results of other models with an implemented N-cycle. Taking into account the N-limitation of the C-cycle, the modelled dynamics of total carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems from 1850 to the mid-20th century is specified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Changes in the composition of various chemical elements in ancient nephrite artifacts due to prolonged burial are critical factors that should not be underestimated. However, the increasingly stringent heritage management has made many techniques impractical. Consequently, portable X‐ray fluorescence (pXRF) has become an indispensable nondestructive field analysis method. This paper aims to make use of the pXRF dataset to distinguish which elements tested are endogenous or exogenous, as well as to gauge which elements have been affected by stronger burial effects. More specifically, we carry out this work on the example of 103 pieces of nephrite excavated from different cemeteries in the Nanyang area. In addition to traditional statistical techniques, a new tool, the concentration‐number (C‐N) fractal method can shed new light on the analysis of the distribution patterns of different elements in excavated nephrite. The anomalous boundaries generated by the method have clear geochemical significance and can be delineated between background zone and disturbed regions. The degree of resistance of different elements to fluctuations in external factors was assessed, which has a direct relationship with the content of the buried soil. This paper presents originality by the fact that helps us understand better and special supports the farmers to understand the importance of knowing the main physiological, biochemical and chemical elements which determine the formation of vegetable mass for the corn. In this paper it was studied the Olt corn hybrid which is cultivated on large areas of land especially in the SW area of Oltenia, more precisely on the territory of the Caracal Plain. It is important to remember that on the forming and the welfare of the corn mass depends on the future production. Both the humus reserve in the soil and also the unequal administration of some doses of nitrogen and phosphor determines increased production. It has been watched the vegetation's state of this hybrid in correlation with the chemical changes of the plants through the use of chemical fertilizers that are correlated also by the cultivation system that had been used so named irrigated and non-irrigated system. Neutron-induced single event upsets (SEUs) have become a significant reliability concern for advanced electronics. Ever-shrinking device sizes and the introduction of new elements in state-of-the-art integrated circuits (ICs) have increased device neutron SEU susceptibility. Various elements found in ICs each have a role in producing SEUs from low-energy neutrons (sub-10 MeV). Aluminum-silicon alloys are popular casting alloys. In its raw state, the microstructure of the hypoeutectic silumin consists of a large eutectic β phase against the background of dendritic eutectic α. Due to its large microstructure components, mainly the eutectic β phase, this alloy has low mechanical properties. The unfavorable properties of hypoeutectic silumin can be improved by changing the size and shape of the alloy's microstructure components. There are several possibilities for controlling the microstructure and the resulting mechanical properties of the alloy. One possibility is to modify the alloy with elements and chemical compounds. This paper presents the effect of phosphorus with Al-Ti-B on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hypoeutectic silumin AlSi7Mg. The proportions of Ti to B were selected on the basis of the results presented in the literature, recognizing the optimal ratio of 5:1. The modifier was introduced into the alloy in the form of an AlTiBP master alloy with a variable content of titanium, boron, and phosphorus. Phosphorus was added at the levels of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3% of the weight of the modified casting. As a result of the tests carried out, the modifying effect of the introduced master alloy was confirmed. A different morphology of microstructures was obtained for the different chemical compositions of the modifier. The most favorable modification effect, whose measurable parameter is the highest (out of the obtained) mechanical properties, was found for the modifier containing 0.25% Ti + 0.03% B + 0.2% P. It was also found that phosphorus, in the presence of titanium and boron, affects the microstructure and mechanical properties of hypoeutectic silumin AlSi7Mg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mendeleev's Periodic Table of Chemical Elements and the International Year of the Periodic Table proclaimed by the United Nations. The presentations of the invited speakers were published by the Journal of Pure and Applied Chemistry as a special issue. The papers in this issue formed a broad picture of the Periodic Table: the history, the people, the reasoning, the mathematical description of the law, and the efforts to predict and to create any new elements. A by‐product of energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (EDXRF)‐analysis consists of using the ratios of selected X‐ray peaks to determine the thickness of multilayered objects. Three different methods were developed in the past, all because the two main K or L X‐lines from an EDXRF spectrum emitted by a chemical element have a distinct energy and are differently attenuated by an overlying layer. This specific subject has many papers dedicated, but only a few considerations were devoted to the limits of these methods, that is, the range, for example, of gold thickness that can be usefully determined by each method. This paper defines these limits in the specific case of thin gilding (with d < 1 μm). Three typical situations were considered, and the following artefacts were studied: two artefacts on gilded lead, where the gold leaf is superimposed to a white lead pigment, both in the painting "La Fornarina" of Raphael, dated 1520 AD, and in the imperial carriage of Dom Pedro II emperor of Brazil. In this last case, the white lead pigment was painted over the wood structure of the carriage; four artefacts on gilded copper, three crowns and a pendant, from the tomb of the Lady of Cao, from the Moche civilization of the North of Peru, dated around 350 AD; finally, an artefact on gilded silver, a vase from the Chavín civilization of the North of Peru, dated around 1000‐200 BC.
