Thermal annealing is a convenient, low-cost, and versatile route to fine-tune the physicochemical properties of graphene oxide paper (GOP) toward various applications. Therefore, a thorough monitoring of the thermal decomposition of GOP is generally required for a precise and safe adjustment of its properties. From this perspective, thermogravimetry analysis (TG-A) is employed to scrutinize the multi-step thermal decomposition process of GOP under a nitrogen atmosphere. GOP is elaborated from modified hummers graphene oxide (GO). Nonisothermal TG-A is carried out for the as-prepared GOP at different heating rates. Activation energy is assessed for the overall decomposition process by several isoconversional models. Derivative thermogravimetry (D-TG) curves are derived numerically from TG-A data. To find the number of reactions involved, D-TG curves are deconvoluted into individual peaks by the well-known Fraser–Suzuki function. The obtained results show that the thermal decomposition of GOP consists mainly of six reactions: physisorbed water dehydration, rearrangement and elimination of oxygen functional groups, disproportionation reaction, chemisorbed water dehydration, desulfonation, and degradation of the carbon framework. In this work, we demonstrate an effective anion capturing in an aqueous medium using a highly porous carbon paper decorated with ZnO nanorods. A sol–gel technique was first employed to form a thin and compact seed layer of ZnO nanoparticles on the dense network of carbon fibers in the carbon paper. Subsequently, ZnO nanorods were successfully grown on the pre-seeded carbon papers using inexpensive chemical bath deposition. The prepared porous electrodes were electrochemically investigated for improved charge storage and stability under long-term operational conditions. The results show effective capacitive deionization with a maximum areal capacitance of 2 mF/cm2, an energy consumption of 50 kJ per mole of chlorine ions, and an excellent long-term stability of the fabricated C-ZnO electrodes. The experimental results are supported by COMSOL simulations. I n the context of an adequate health care organization, the figure of the neurologist as an emergency operator (in the emergency room—ER—and/or in a dedicated outpatient clinic) is crucial for an effective functional connection with the territory (and therefore with general practitioners), a reduction in inappropriate ER accesses, specific diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to neurological emergencies in the ER and a reduction in nonspecific or even unnecessary instrumental investigations. In this position paper of the Italian Association of Emergency Neurology (ANEU: Associazione Neurologia dell'Emergenza Urgenza), these issues are addressed, and two important organizational solutions are proposed: The Neuro Fast Track, as an outpatient organization approach strongly linked to general practitioners and non-neurological specialists and dedicated to cases with deferrable urgency (to be assessed within 72 h) The identification of an emergency neurologist, who is engaged in ER assessments as a consultant and involved in the management of the semi-intensive care unit of the emergency neurology and the stroke unit according to an appropriate rotation, as well as in consultations for patients with neurological emergencies in inpatient wards The possibility of computerizing the screening of patients with deferrable urgency in the Neuro Fast Track is described. A dedicated app represents an important tool that can facilitate the identification of patients for whom deferred assessment is appropriate, the scheduling of neurological examinations and reductions in the booking time through a more rapid approach to specialist assessment and subsequent investigations. This work deals with fracture mechanisms in quasi-brittle materials, focusing on the characterization of the Fracture Process Zone (FPZ) of specimens under tensile load. Particularly, paper was used as model material. Experiments were conducted on notched and unnotched specimens. Based on an image analysis of these observations, a stochastic finite element model was developed, using both a nonlocal stress-based approach and a discretized random field modeling of the Young's modulus. The proposed methodology allowed characterizing the damage zone and the size of the FPZ, analyzing the influence of the mesostructure, composed of flocs (fiber aggregates where the basis weight is larger than the average one) and antiflocs (complement of flocs). The area of the active FPZ and the normalized stress drop were linked using a surface energy dissipated in the active FPZ. The stress drop, until limiting value, increased with the width of the active FPZ. Finally, a relationship between the surface energy and the nonlocal internal length was established. Point-of-care sonography is a precondition in acute and emergency medicine for the diagnosis and initiation of therapy for critically ill and injured patients. While emergency sonography is a mandatory part of the training for clinical acute and emergency medicine, it is not everywhere required for prehospital emergency medicine. Although some medical societies in Germany have already established their own learning concepts for emergency ultrasound, a uniform national training concept for the use of emergency sonography in the out-of-hospital setting is still lacking. Experts of several professional medical societies have therefore joined forces and developed a structured training concept for emergency sonography in the prehospital setting. Women's health care has evolved significantly since it was first acknowledged as an integral part of internal medicine training more than two decades ago. To update and clarify core competencies in sex- and gender-based women's health for general internists, the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Women and Medicine Commission prepared the following Position Paper, approved by the SGIM council in 2023. Competencies were developed using several sources, including the 2021 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Program Requirements for Internal Medicine and the 2023 American Board of Internal Medicine Certification Examination Blueprint. These competencies are relevant to the care of patients who identify as women, as well as gender-diverse individuals to whom these principles apply. They align with pivotal advances in women's health and acknowledge the changing context of patients' lives, reaffirming the role of general internal medicine physicians in providing comprehensive care to women. Purpose: The orthopaedic surgeons, especially the young budding surgeons should have a well-balanced knowledge of the past evidence as well the current evidence in the literature for the appropriate as well as optimum management of tibial plateau fractures. Bibliometric analysis of the top-cited papers on tibial plateau fracture management can help know their concurrent interests, deficiencies and conflicting issues regarding their management. This study aimed to identify the 50 most cited research articles in tibial plateau research and analyse their characteristics. Methods: We searched the Thompson Reuters Web of Science database for articles relevant to tibial plateau fracture and prepared a list of top 50 cited articles that included original articles and review articles concerning tibial plateau fractures. The included articles were analysed for contributing journals, corresponding author's country, publication year, cumulative citations, annual citations, citation trends over time, level of evidence and a qualitative review. Results: The search strategy resulted in 2263 articles. The top 50 cited articles were published from 1974 to 2014 and belonged to 12 journal sources. There were 47 original articles and 3 review articles. The average citations per article were 126.2, and the annual citations per article were 6.478 per year. The top-cited articles were relevant to the strategies in the management, classification, fracture reduction, articular restoration, types and number of fixation devices, surgical approaches, associated menisco-ligamentous injuries and applicability of bone grafts/substitutes in tibial plateau fractures. Conclusion: The current bibliometric analysis summarises the top-cited evidence concerning tibial plateau fractures and can be a potential resource for reviewing and locating the same. The analysis shows that most top-cited evidence belongs to the year 2000 onwards. Also, recent articles have a higher annual citation rate. A limited number of journals and mostly, western countries have contributed to the top-cited evidence. Whilst the top-cited evidence has touched several aspects of tibial plateau fractures, it is in the form of level IV case series. The timely integration of palliative medicine is an important component in the treatment of various advanced diseases. While a German S‑3-guideline on palliative medicine exists for patients with incurable cancer, a recommendation for non-oncological patients and especially for palliative patients presenting in the emergency department or intensive care unit is missing to date. Based on the present consensus paper, the palliative care aspects of the respective medical disciplines are addressed. The study "Retracted papers originating from paper mills: cross sectional study" examines the scientific misconduct of so-called paper mills, which produce and sell fake articles. The authors mainly come from Chinese institutions and most of the articles were published in high-impact factor journals. The study identified 1182 retracted articles from paper mills and warns that this could only be the tip of the iceberg. The falsification of scientific literature through manipulated data is a serious problem. Editorial boards of scientific journals must take measures to detect and reject such submissions. A paper-based analytical device (PAD) is presented with colorimetric/electrochemical dual readouts for the simultaneous sensing of total chromium (Cr) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). This device consists of a homemade three-electrode system and a patterned paper chip, integrating multiple functions including electrochemical detection, fluid driving, online oxidation, and colorimetric detection. The fiberglass filter paper with a hydrophilic microchannel was used to achieve self-driving fluidics without external equipment. One end of the microchannel was integrated with a homemade three-electrode system to achieve sample loading and electrochemical detection. The middle region on the microchannel was modified with oxidizing reagents to perform online pretreatment, and the yield of Cr(III) oxidation can reach 97.9%, ensuring reliable colorimetric detection of total Cr at another end of the microchannel modified with chromogenic agents. With this device, the signals of Cr(VI) (the signal peak at 0.29 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and total Cr can be obtained in one single injection. After optimization, the limit of detection (LOD) of Cr(VI) and total Cr were 0.01 mg L−1 and 0.06 mg L−1 and the linear ranges were 0.05–3.0 mg L−1 and 0.2–3.0 mg L−1, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSD) of the electrochemical testing of Cr(VI) results were in a range 1.3%–8.7% (n = 3), and the RSD values of the colorimetric testing of total Cr were between 0.7–9.2% (n = 3). The device's reliability was demonstrated by performing the practical speciation of Cr in tap water, river water, and electroplating wastewater while the recoveries obtained using the present method were in the range 93.5–106%. Paper dusting has recently been recognized as a significant issue in the hygiene tissue industry. This review considers the factors that may contribute to dusting and linting, as well as the challenges of evaluating dusting propensity. Examining both the paper and textile industries, several methods of dusting and linting assessment exist. This review describes the equipment, methodologies, targeted paper grades or materials, advantages, and disadvantages. Standards (if applicable) are also covered for each of the major methods. These existing methods were found to have various drawbacks, suggesting a need for an improved, standardized method and device. In conclusion, and to motivate future research, mechanisms of dust release are reviewed along with existing and possible solutions to combat the tissue-dusting problem. This paper outlines the importance of creating a repeatable, standard, and accurate testing procedure and methodology for dust particle characterization in the hygiene tissue industry. This paper considers the problem of reliable determination of the volume of cellulose fiber and its active surface to estimate or predict the properties of the paper or cardboard manufactured on its basis. To that end, we construct a 3D model of paper or cardboard fiber using contemporary methods of sample preparation for electron microscopy along with a professional powerful graphical editor. The 3D modeling included preparation of a series of microstructure paper slices with a step of at least 10 μm followed by their transformation into a 3D body. In the Object Properties section, the vector format graphic software sets the volume of fiber material, its surface and weight. Provided that the 3D body is correctly scaled, i.e., in accordance with the dimensions specified in microscopic images, the Object Properties section generates the required parameters. The obtained 3D fiber model also enables the force direction of interfiber interaction to be determined in the 3D coordinate system. Until now, the absence of a 3D fiber model in real dimensions has impeded evaluation of the actual value of interfiber bonding forces. A turn-on fluorescent aptasensor based on a paper-based microfluidic chip was developed to detect arsenite via aptamer competition strategy and smartphone imaging. The chip was prepared by wax-printing hydrophilic channels on filter paper. It is portable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly. Double-stranded DNA consisting of aptamer and fluorescence-labeled complementary strands was immobilized on the reaction zone of the paper chip. Due to the specific strong binding between aptamer and arsenite, the fluorescent complementary strand was squeezed out and driven by capillary force to the detection area of the paper chip, so that the fluorescent signal arose in the detection area under the excitation wavelength of 488 nm. Arsenite can be quantified by using smartphone imaging and RGB image analysis. Under the optimal conditions, the paper-based microfluidic aptasensor exhibited excellent linear response over a wide range of 1 to 1000 nM, with a detection limit as low as 0.96 nM (3σ). In this work, cellulose nanofiber was prepared from water hyacinth (WH) using a simple domestic blender and employed as reinforcement in recycled paper. There are various sources to prepare cellulose nanofiber. However, water hyacinth was used as a source to synthesize cellulose in this study to decrease its devastating effect on the water body. Pure cellulose was isolated from water hyacinth with chemical treatments including dilute alkali swelling and bleaching. The chemical composition of water hyacinth was gravimetrically determined and the result demonstrated that cellulose is the largest constituent of the plant (55%), followed by hemicelluloses (19%) and lignin (14%). The remaining 12% was related to other extracts like fat, oil, pectin, etc. As the FTIR data revealed, the functional groups corresponding to lignin and hemicelluloses were absent in the FTIR spectra of extracted cellulose. To increase its functionality, the prepared cellulose was disintegrated into nanofibers using a simple mechanical treatment. To learn more about cellulose fibrillation, UV–Vis spectroscopy was used to analyze the light transmittance of 1 wt% water dispersed, mechanically treated cellulose. The dispersion showed high light transparency, particularly at a higher wavelength. As a result of the cellulose dispersion's reasonable light transmittance value, it can be deduced that the aggregated cellulose chains were efficiently transformed into nanofibers. The inclusion of cellulose nanofibers as reinforcement significantly improved recycled paper's moisture resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Just like disposal of waste papers by indiscriminate dumping, stabilisation of clay soil using cement or by firing has a potential adverse effect on the environment and public health. Thus, the essence of this work was to investigate the feasibility of chemically modifying clay soils using waste papers in order to solve the disposal problems and also develop clay-based composites suitable for building purposes. Hydrothermally calcined waste paper ash nanomaterial (HCWPAN) was prepared from assorted waste papers and used to separately develop composites with white clay matrix (WCC) and yellow clay matrix (YCC) each at 0 %, 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, and 40 % volumetric proportions of replacement. Three representative samples were developed in each case. Apparent porosity, water absorption, bulk density, sorptivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, volumetric heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, thermal lag, flaking concentration, flexural strength, and compressive strength were investigated for all the samples. For satisfactory performance during service, the optimum content level of the HCWPAN was found to be 10 % in the samples. Though the WCC sample possessed greater compressive strength (4.029 ± 0.002) MPa than the value (2.895 ± 0.002) MPa obtained for the YCC sample at that level, the latter exhibited greater potential for enhancement of thermal comfort as a walling element in buildings. Also, reductions from 8.98 % to 8.00 % and 13.30 % to 12.575 % were observed in water absorption of the resulting WCC and YCC samples, respectively. Plant-fibre ancient-books with cultural significance should be protected from moisture and pollution. In this work, a strategy of surface in-situ protection (building composite coating) was adopted to achieve good hydrophobicity, moisture-proofness and ink-contamination resistance at the surface of archaistic paper. By pre-ring opening of epoxy-based poly(vinyl silsesquioxane) (POSS) and spray of POSS/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) mixed solution, in-situ construction of POSS/PVDF composite coating at the surface of ancient paper was achieved. Compared to water-absorbing ancient paper, POSS/PVDF co-modified ancient paper shows strong humidity resistance. The surface of co-modified ancient paper (epoxy-group pre-ring opening for 45 min) displays high hydrophobicity (water contact angle of ~142.6°), ascribed to greatly improved surface roughness of paper fibres as well as complete coverage of high-content Si/F elements on fibre surface. POSS-modified and neat ancient-paper materials show surface water contact angles of ~113.9° and 0°, respectively. Robust ink-resistance of POSS/PVDF co-modified ancient-paper surface is realized. The innovation in this work lies in perfect synergy of cage-shaped POSS and threadlike PVDF in coating. Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) are powerful platforms for point-of-need testing since they are inexpensive devices fabricated in different shapes and miniaturized sizes, ensuring better portability. Additionally, the readout and detection systems can be accomplished with portable devices, allying with the features of both systems. These devices have been introduced as promising analytical platforms to meet critical demands involving rapid, reliable, and simple testing. They have been applied to monitor species related to environmental, health, and food issues. Herein, an outline of chronological events involving PADs is first reported. This work also introduces insights into fundamental parameters to engineer new analytical platforms, including the paper type and device operation. The discussions involve the main analytical techniques used as detection systems, such as colorimetry, fluorescence, and electrochemistry. It also showed recent advances involving PADs, especially combining optical and electrochemical detection into a single device. Dual/combined detection systems can overcome individual barriers of the analytical techniques, making possible simultaneous determinations, or enhancing the devices' sensitivity and/or selectivity. In addition, this review reports on distance-based detection, which is also considered a trend in analytical chemistry. Distance-based detection offers instrument-free analyses and avoids user interpretation errors, which are outstanding features for analyses at the point of need, especially for resource-limited regions. Finally, this review provides a critical overview of the practical specifications of the recent analytical platforms involving PADs, demonstrating their challenges. We report the development of a competitive ELISA-based origami microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) for the detection of mycotoxins in animal feed material. The μPAD was patterned using the wax printing technique with the design of a testing pad in the middle and two absorption pads at the side. Anti-mycotoxin antibodies were effectively immobilized on chitosan–glutaraldehyde-modified sample reservoirs in the μPAD. The determination of zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, and T-2 toxin in corn flour was successfully achieved by performing competitive ELISA on the μPAD in 20 min. Colorimetric results were easily distinguished by the naked eye with a detection limit of 1 µg/mL for all three mycotoxins. The μPAD integrated with competitive ELISA holds potential for practical applications in the livestock industry for rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective detection of different mycotoxins in animal feed materials. Using the example of assessing the technical condition of the trunnions of drying cylinders in cardboard machines (CBM), the question of the possibility of ranking cyclically loaded elements of dynamic equipment according to the degree of damage to their material by fatigue cracks using acoustic emission (AE) measurements is discussed. As a result of special laboratory studies with varying loads in the cycle of loading and lubrication of crack edges, the features of AE due to the friction of crack edges and plastic deformation at the crack tip during its growth in a viscous material have been established. It is shown that during cyclic loading of the material, AE signals from the friction of its banks are detected more steadily than AE signals due to a crack jump with an increase in its length, and that tracking the former ensures the detection of fatigue damage in the material even under loading conditions insufficient for crack growth. Based on the data obtained, three AE signs of the presence of fatigue damage in the material of the elements of dynamic equipment were developed under the condition of cyclic activation of the movement of crack edges. As a result of industrial testing of the developed AE signs, their operability was confirmed, their boundary values on the operating trunnions of CBM drying cylinders were clarified, and a method for ranking trunnions by the level of damage due to fatigue cracks was proposed. By comparing the results of AE measurements with ultrasound testing, the reliability of the proposed approach was evaluated and showed the probability of detecting a fatigue crack in the trunnions of CBM drying cylinders at the level of 71%, with the probability of skipping and false rejection of the product of 12 and 17%, respectively. The developed technique is also transferable to other massive dynamic equipment after clarifying the boundary values of AE signs of fatigue damage in the material on this type of facilities. Purpose: To evaluate the information that patients undergoing spine surgery truly receive and assimilate when they sign their informed consent documents. Methods: This was a retrospective study on patients who underwent spine arthrodesis or spine discectomy. Patients were given a full explanation of the surgical technique to be employed and its potential risks before they were included on the surgical waiting list. Before surgery, they were asked to sign an informed consent form. The studied variables included whether patients read the informed consent form, whether they recalled the surgical technique used or the spinal segment operated, whether they were aware of the surgical risks involved, and if they had looked for information about their procedure elsewhere. Answers were analyzed by age and educational level. Results: Of a total of 458 total patients, only 51.9% answered all the questions. Sixty-three percent of patients said they had read the informed consent document before surgery. Although 91.6% of patients were aware of the spine segment operated, only 73.5% remembered the surgical technique employed. A total of 63.9% of patients could recall the vertebral levels operated. 39.1% were not aware of the surgical risks involved, and only 16.0% of patients admitted having looked for additional information. A statistically significant correlation was found between the search for additional information and young age (p < 0.001) on the one hand, and high educational level on the other (p = 0.023). Conclusion: Even though obtaining informed consent is an important procedure before spinal surgery, almost 40% of the patients in this study underwent surgery without reading the informed consent document or being aware of the risks posed by the procedure. High blood pressure is the leading cause of death and disability globally and an important treatable risk factor for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and chronic kidney diseases. Digital technology, including mobile health solutions and digital therapy, is expanding rapidly in clinical medicine and has the potential to improve the quality of care and effectiveness of drug treatment by making medical interventions timely, tailored to hypertensive patients' needs and by improving treatment adherence. Thus, the systematic application of digital technologies could support diagnosis and awareness of hypertension and its complications, ultimately leading to improved BP control at the population level. The progressive implementation of digital medicine in the national health systems must be accompanied by the supervision and guidance of health authorities and scientific societies to ensure the correct use of these new technologies with consequent maximization of the potential benefits. The role of scientific societies in relation to the rapid adoption of digital technologies, therefore, should encompass the entire spectrum of activities pertaining to their institutional role: information, training, promotion of research, scientific collaboration and advice, evaluation and validation of technological tools, and collaboration with regulatory and health authorities. Rapid and accurate bioburden detection has become increasingly necessary for food, health, pharmaceutical and environmental applications. To detect bioburden accurately, and in a highly sensitive manner, we have fabricated a novel microfluidic device with an integrated filter to trap the cells. Bioburden is detected on the filter paper in situ using the redox reaction of fluorescent label resorufin and a portable multichannel fluorometer is used for fluorescence measurement. The microfluidic device was fabricated in a facile, low-cost, and rapid way with microwave-induced thermally assisted bonding. To characterize the bonding quality of the microfluidic cassettes, different tests were performed, and the filter paper material and size were optimized. Primary Bacillus subtilis culture bacterial samples were filtered through the device to validate and investigate the performance parameters. Our results show that a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.037 CFU/mL can be achieved through this microfluidic device whereas the LOD in a normal microfluidic cassette in the fluorometer and the golden standard spectrophotometer are 0.378 and 0.128 CFU/mL respectively. The results depict that three to ten times LOD improvement is possible through this microfluidic cassette and more sensitive detection is possible depending on the volume filtered within a rapid 3 min. This novel microfluidic device along with the fluorometer can be used as a rapid portable tool for highly sensitive, accurate and high-throughput bacterial detection for different applications. The effectiveness of two ways to reduce the vibration and sound emission of a high-pressure laminate plate has been investigated. It has been found that the inclusion of viscoelastic polymer polyvinyl acetate film in the laminate structure or constrained damping layer treatment based on polyvinyl acetate film and aluminum foil or plastic leads to a significant improvement in its vibroacoustic characteristics. The greatest reduction in vibration and sound emission was achieved by applying a coating with aluminum foil whose thickness was six times less than that of the damped laminate plate. Bioburden is detected on the filter paper in situ using the redox reaction of fluorescent label resorufin and a portable multichannel fluorometer is used for fluorescence measurement. The microfluidic device was fabricated in a facile, low-cost, and rapid way with microwave-induced thermally assisted bonding. To characterize the bonding quality of the microfluidic cassettes, different tests were performed, and the filter paper material and size were optimized. Primary Bacillus subtilis culture bacterial samples were filtered through the device to validate and investigate the performance parameters. Our results show that a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.037 CFU/mL can be achieved through this microfluidic device whereas the LOD in a normal microfluidic cassette in the fluorometer and the golden standard spectrophotometer are 0.378 and 0.128 CFU/mL respectively. The results depict that three to ten times LOD improvement is possible through this microfluidic cassette and more sensitive detection is possible depending on the volume filtered within a rapid 3 min. This novel microfluidic device along with the fluorometer can be used as a rapid portable tool for highly sensitive, accurate and high-throughput bacterial detection for different applications. This joint report from the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SIOT) and the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP) aims for a consensus around the scientific rationale and clinical strategy for the management of osteoporotic patients affected by periodontitis who are undergoing anti-resorptive (AR) therapy to manage the risk of the occurrence of a medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). Osteoporosis and periodontitis are chronic diseases with a high prevalence in aging patients, and they share some of the same pathogenetic mechanisms based upon inflammation. Available evidence shows the relationship among osteoporosis, AR agents, periodontitis and implant therapy in relation to the incidence of MRONJ. Uncontrolled periodontitis may lead to tooth loss and to the need to replace teeth with dental implants. Tooth extraction and surgical dental procedures are recognized as the main risk factors for developing MRONJ in individuals taking AR therapy for osteometabolic conditions. Although the incidence of MRONJ in osteometabolic patients taking AR therapy may be as low as 0.9%, the increasing prevalence of osteoporosis and the high prevalence of periodontitis suggest that this potential complication should not be overlooked. Good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines are proposed that aim at a more integrated approach (prescriber, dentist, periodontist and dental hygienist) in the management of periodontitis patients undergoing AR therapy for osteometabolic disorders to reduce the risk of MRONJ. Dental professional and prescribers should educate patients regarding the potential risk associated with the long-term use of AR therapy and oral health behavior. Highlights: AR drugs such as bisphosphonates (BPs), denosumab (DNB) and romosozumab (RMB) are very effective in the treatment of osteoporosis and in the prevention of fragility bone fractures. Periodontitis is a widespread infective inflammatory disease that is the major cause of tooth loss, and it is strongly connected with other systemic diseases, including osteoporosis. MRONJ is a serious and rare complication associated with the use of AR drugs in osteoporotic patients. The reported incidence is rather low and ranges between 0.01 and 0.9%, but may be higher in the presence of comorbidities. Periodontitis and MRONJ share some risk factors, such as diabetes, smoking, steroids, cardiovascular diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. The risk of developing MRONJ in a case of successfully treated periodontitis is much lower than the risk of fragility fracture in a high-risk person such as one with a previous fracture. Oral and periodontal conditions should be assessed before starting an AR therapy, and local intra-oral inflammation should be brought under control. Periodontal therapy is effective at reducing the risk of teeth extraction and therefore the need for major bone reconstructive intervention and implant placement. Control of periodontal inflammation should be achieved and maintained over time in osteoporosis-affected patients treated with AR. Peri-implant diseases rather than dental implant placement may be considered a trigger for MRONJ; for this reason, periodontitis and peri-implant inflammatory disease control and the inclusion of patients in a supportive periodontal program are critical. AR therapy should not be discontinued or deferred by the dentist unless done in accordance with the prescriber. The suspension of BP therapy is not recommended on a routine basis, as BP binds to the skeletal sites and continue to be released for months or years after treatment, with a long tail effect on bone metabolism. DNB administration should not be withdrawn because the rebound effect may increase the risk of bone fractures. A therapeutic window in which to perform dento-alveolar surgical procedures is suggested. It is advisable to calibrate the timing of dental extraction and surgical procedures between the dentist and prescribers according to the oral condition, the general health condition, and the time and type of AR drugs used. A more integrated approach between prescriber, dentist, periodontist and dental hygienist should be encouraged, particularly in the management of periodontitis-affected patients who are taking AR drugs for osteometabolic disorders. In this article, we report the development and optimization of a cost-effective, biodegradable, disposable, and lightweight conductive polymer deposited on exfoliated graphite paper battery. The anode is made of aluminum foil and the cathode using electrochemically deposited anthraquinone conductive polymers on exfoliated graphite paper. Concentrated sodium chloride salt is used as the electrolyte. The battery shows a maximum capacity of 235 mA h g−1 and a superior cyclability of up to 500 cycles at 50.0 mA cm−2 current density. In order to solve the hygroscopicity of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and improve its flame retardancy, hydrophobic and flame retardant groups were introduced on the surface of APP by means of surface coating. It was blended with styrene acrylic emulsion (AAS) as the reinforcing resin and applied to the automobile engine air filter paper. The structure of the modified particles was confirmed by FT-IR TGA showed that the initial decomposition temperature of the modified particles decreased by 15 ℃, the decomposition rate decreased by about 5%, and the carbon residue rate at 800 ℃ increased from 21.73 to 44.92%; The DSC displayed that the blend resin had fine compatibility. Particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that the large size modified APP particles were diffused into styrene acrylate emulsion particles and reconstituted to form a more compact and smaller particle size. The particles had a core shell structure with a shell thickness of 17 nm. These phenomena revealed the evolution of latex particles after blending. The air filter paper reinforced by blend resin has better mechanical properties and good water resistance. After absorbing water, the burst retention rate of air filter paper is more than 50%, and the stiffness retention rate is more than 20%. Concrete engineers are always looking for materials that can be employed to improve the mechanical performance and lower the carbon footprint of construction products. In this regard, cellulose, a biobased material presents a massive opportunity for its application in the construction industry. Office paper waste (OPW) is cellulose-rich feedstock and a low-cost source to produce cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was used for the production of CNCs from OPW using acid hydrolysis technique at different hydrolysis conditions; time (30–90 min), temperature (40–50 °C), and OPW/acid ratio (1:15-1:25 w/v). The physicochemical properties of CNCs were analyzed using various techniques. All the investigated responses mainly well-fitted RSM cubic models (R2 = 0.9460 to 0.9969) with insignificant lack-of-fit (p-value < 0.05). The highest yield (> 83%) was achieved at the lowest process time, temperature, and high OPW: acid ratio. The increase in process time and deinked OPW: acid ratio from 30 to 90 min and 1:15 to 1:25 resulted in higher crystallinity of CNCs. However, higher process temperature (50 °C) showed a reduction in crystallinity and length of CNCs. The optimization results of CNC production for meeting application of the CNCs as a construction material are time 90 min, temperature 40 °C, and OPW: acid ratio 1:25. The resulting CNC-mortar was tested under mechanical loadings and yielded 37.4 MPa compressive strength and 5.1 MPa of flexure strength. Bloodstream infection (BSI) is a major complication in patients with cancers due to therapy-induced neutropenia and underlying conditions, which increases hospitalization time and mortality rate. Targeted and timely antimicrobial management is crucial to save the patients' lives and reduce the social and economic burdens. Blood culture is a routine clinical diagnostic method of BSI with a long turnaround time, and generally identifies monomicrobial BSI. Thus, polymicrobial BSI often goes undetected although it occurs more frequently in these patients and results in more severe outcomes compared to monomicrobial BSI. In this work, we apply glutaric anhydride, N-hydroxysuccinimide and N,N′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide to fabricate a functional surface on cellulose filter paper. Targeting three pathogens (Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and human cytomegalovirus) commonly occurring in BSI in neutropenic patients, we demonstrate rapid and accurate triplex pathogen DNA detection using the functionalized paper. All three pathogen DNA was identified in 1–5 min with a detection limit of 0.1–0.5 ng/µL. The developed test tool has the potential to provide rapid polymicrobial BSI diagnosis in support of timely, accurate antimicrobial treatment, and could be integrated into an automatic sample-to-result portable equipment. Historically, the recording of information over paper has always been regarded as the most important factor for maintaining records of human activities and spreading civilization. The present work is focusing to formulate hydride paper polymer sheets (HPPSs) using two fluorescence dyes (4-(2,6-diphenylpyridin-4-yl)-N,N-dimethylaniline) (F1) and (4-(2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)pyridin-4-yl)-N,N-dimethylaniline) (F2) for the production of secure hybrid paper polymer sheets each with a different concentration. Mechanical properties, including tensile strength (MPa), Young's modulus (MPa), elongation (mm), folding endurance, and tear resistance (mN m2/g), were determined. Furthermore, a topographical study was carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopes (FE-SEM). In comparison with native paper and polymer films, HPPSs demonstrated a significant improvement in mechanical properties. The fluorescence behavior of applied dyes was evaluated in both solution and solid states with UV–vis and photoluminescence (PL). The results confirmed that excitation of F1 and F2 dyes occurred at 393 nm and 448 nm and emission at 505 nm and 496 nm, respectively. Additionally, the third concentration (3% w/v) of both dyes was observed in solid state to achieve excellent resolution. In the first image, a note is shown under normal light, and in the second image, a picture is shown of the fluorescent security markings under UV light at 365 nm. Based on the results obtained, it is proven that the developed high stable as well as excellent mechanical security HPPSs can be used for paper-based information security due to their optical properties. Further, the density function theory (DFT) calculation was performed in order to identify the composition of the excited and ground states. This manuscript reports on a simple paper-based bienzymatic colorimetric assay for sarcosine as an important urinary biomarker of prostate cancer. All required assay reagents are pre-deposited on hydrophilic filter paper spots surrounded by a hydrophobic barrier. Sarcosine in the sample solution is selectively oxidized in the presence of sarcosine oxidase (SOx), resulting in the formation of hydrogen peroxide, which is subsequently detected through the horseradish peroxidase (HRP)–catalyzed conversion of the colorless indicator 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into its blue-colored oxidation product. By the modification of the paper with positively charged poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), a linear response to sarcosine between 0 and 10 μM and a significant lowering of the limit of detection (LOD) (0.6 μM) compared to the unmodified paper substrate (12.6 μM) has been achieved. The improvement of the LOD was attributed to the fact that the presence of the polymer limits the enzyme-driven colorimetric reaction to the surface of the paper substrate, resulting in stronger color development. In experiments in artificial urine matrix, the bicarbonate anion was identified as an inhibitor of the colorimetric reaction. This inhibition was successfully eliminated through on-device sample pH adjustments with pH-buffer components pre-deposited onto assay devices. The LOD for sarcosine achieved in artificial urine matrix (2.5 μM) is below the 5 μM threshold value for this urinary biomarker required for diagnostic purposes. Finally, good selectivity over all 20 natural amino acids and satisfactory long-term storage stability of reagent-modified paper substrates at − 20 °C for a period of 50 days were confirmed. There is increasing focus on applying deep learning methods to electrocardiograms (ECGs), with recent studies showing that neural networks (NNs) can predict future heart failure or atrial fibrillation from the ECG alone. However, large numbers of ECGs are needed to train NNs, and many ECGs are currently only in paper format, which are not suitable for NN training. We developed a fully-automated online ECG digitisation tool to convert scanned paper ECGs into digital signals. Using automated horizontal and vertical anchor point detection, the algorithm automatically segments the ECG image into separate images for the 12 leads and a dynamical morphological algorithm is then applied to extract the signal of interest. We then validated the performance of the algorithm on 515 digital ECGs, of which 45 were printed, scanned and redigitised. The automated digitisation tool achieved 99.0% correlation between the digitised signals and the ground truth ECG (n = 515 standard 3-by-4 ECGs) after excluding ECGs with overlap of lead signals. Without exclusion, the performance of average correlation was from 90 to 97% across the leads on all 3-by-4 ECGs. There was a 97% correlation for 12-by-1 and 3-by-1 ECG formats after excluding ECGs with overlap of lead signals. Without exclusion, the average correlation of some leads in 12-by-1 ECGs was 60–70% and the average correlation of 3-by-1 ECGs achieved 80–90%. ECGs that were printed, scanned, and redigitised, our tool achieved 96% correlation with the original signals. We have developed and validated a fully-automated, user-friendly, online ECG digitisation tool. Unlike other available tools, this does not require any manual segmentation of ECG signals. This work presents a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) for the determination of sucrose using the Benedict's test. An asymmetric dumbbell-shaped hydrophobic barrier was produced by rubber stamping the barrier pattern onto a laboratory filter paper. Hydrochloric acid and solution containing sucrose were successively deposited onto the sample reservoir of the μPAD attached to a glass slide. The device was placed in a plastic bag and dipped into boiling water for accelerating the hydrolysis of sucrose into the reducing sugars. Then the Benedict's reagent was added at the narrow straight channel connecting the two circular zones of the μPAD, which was replaced in the plastic bag and heated again for reduction of Cu(II) by the reducing sugars. Precipitate of brick-red copper(I) oxide was formed. The image of the μPAD was recorded by a smartphone. The ratio of the red to blue intensities gave linear correlation with the concentration of sucrose in the range of 0.5–10% w/v. The relative standard deviation of the measurement was less than 5% for 2 and 4% w/v sucrose (n = 10), with limit of determination, calculated using standard deviation of regression divided by slope of calibration, of 0.26% w/v sucrose. The method was successfully validated using the dinitrosalicylic acid method for sucrose measurement. Percent recoveries of sucrose were evaluated using ten sugarcane samples. Introduction: A highly cited paper (HCP) is considered a landmark that can influence both research and clinical practice. The characteristics of HCPs in avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVNFH) were identified and the research status was explored in a scientometric analysis. Methods: The present bibliometric analysis were based on the Scopus database from 1991 to 2021. Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer were used for co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis. From 8496 papers, only 2.9% (244) were HCPs, with 200.8 citations registered per article. Results: Of the HCPs, 11.9% and 12.3% were externally funded and had international collaboration, respectively. These were published in 84 journals by 1625 authors from 425 organizations of 33 countries. The USA, Japan, Switzerland, and Israel were the leading countries.The lead research organizations were Sinai Hospital and John Hopkins University (USA). The most impactful organizations were University of Arkansas for Medical Science, and Good Samaritan Hospital (USA). R.A. Mont (USA) and K.H. Koo (South Korea) were the most prolific contributing authors, while R. Ganz (Switzerland) and R.S. Weinstein (USA) registered the most impactful contributions. The most prolific publishing journal was the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between digital urine color and paper urine color with other urine indices to assess hydration status. Methods: Twelve male subjects (mean ± standard deviation; age, 26 ± 8 years; body mass, 57.8 ± 5.3 kg; height, 177.5 ± 8.9 cm; VO2max, 57.8 ± 5.8 ml·kg−1·min−1) performed four exercise trials in the heat. Before and following exercise trials, subjects provide urine samples. Urine samples were measured using a digital urine color chart on a portable device screen. Urine samples were also assessed with urine specific gravity (USG), urine osmolality (UOsmo), and a validated paper urine color chart. Results: There were extremely large associations found between digital urine color and paper urine color (r = 0.926, p < 0.001). Correlation coefficients showing associations with USG and UOsmo were similar between digital urine color (USG, r = 0.695, p < 0.001; UOsmo, r = 0.555, p < 0.001) and paper urine color (USG, r = 0.713, p < 0.001; UOsmo, r = 0.570, p < 0.001). Bland–Altman analysis indicated that no proportional bias was observed between digital and paper urine colors (bias, − 0.148; SD of bias, 0.492; 95% LOA, − 1.11, 0.817; p = 0.094). Conclusions: Strong associations were found between digital and paper urine colors with no proportional bias. Furthermore, the degree of associations with USG and UOsmo was similar between digital and paper urine color. To study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on journal processing times before publication in the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (ORL-HNS). Online search of original papers published in selected ORL-HNS journals in terms of times from submission to acceptance (S-A), acceptance to first online publication (A-P), and submission to online publication (S-P). Papers were divided into those published in the pre-COVID-19 era and those during the COVID-19 era. The latter were further divided into unrelated to COVID-19 and related to COVID-19. A total of 487 articles from 5 selected ORL-HNS journals were included, of which 236 (48.5%) were published during the pre-COVID-19 era and 251 (51.5%) were published during the COVID-19 era. Among them, 180 (37%) papers were not related to COVID-19, and 71 (14.5%) were related to COVID-19. The S-A duration of COVID-19-related articles was significantly shorter compared to papers submitted in the pre-COVID-19 era and to papers submitted in the COVID-19 era but unrelated to COVID-19 (median 6–34 days compared to 65–125 and 46–127, respectively) in all 5 journals. The most prominent reductions in S-A and S-P times were documented in the laryngology and otology/neurotology disciplines, respectively. Processing times of the included papers were significantly shorter in most of the selected ORL-HNS journals during the COVID-19 era compared to the pre-COVID-19 era. COVID-19-related papers were processed more rapidly than non-COVID-19-related papers. Paper-based microfluidics offers the design of miniaturized POC devices to be applied in the health, environment, food, and energy sector employing the ASSURED (Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and Robust, Equipment free and Deliverable to end users) principle of WHO. Therefore, this field is growing very rapidly and ample research is being done. This review focuses on fabrication and detection techniques reported to date. The detection of biogenic amines released from degraded meats is an effective method for evaluating meat freshness. However, existing traditional methods like titration are deemed tedious, while the use of sophisticated analytical instruments is not amenable to field testing. Herein, a cyanostilbene-based fluorescent array was rapidly fabricated using macroarray synthesis on a cellulose paper surface to detect amines liberated from spoiled beef, fish, and chicken. The fluorescence changes of immobilized molecules from the interaction with gaseous amines were used to monitor changes in freshness levels. Thanks to the high-throughput nature of macroarray synthesis, a set of highly responsive molecules such as pyridinium and dicyanovinyl moieties were quickly revealed. Importantly, this method offers flexibility in sensing applications including (1) sensing by individual sensor molecules, where the fluorescence response correlated well with established titration methods, and (2) collective sensing whereby chemometric analysis was used to provide a cutoff of freshness with 73–100% accuracy depending on meat types. We present a translation of the 1933 paper by R. Fürth in which a profound analogy between quantum fluctuations and Brownian motion is pointed out. Fürth highlights the existence of uncertainty relations involving the variance of a statistically conserved quantity of a non-equilibrium thermodynamic indicator and the variance of the corresponding current velocity. The phenomenon is entirely classical and traces back to the effect of a fluctuating environment on a measured system. Rice-paper plant, Tetrapanax papyrifer is a woody plant native to Taiwan and widely distributed in western Japan. Due to its low commercial value, little is known about its interactions with microorganisms. Here, we isolated Neofusicoccum parvum, a known causal agent of grape stem rot and mango stem-end rot, from leaf blight on T. papyrifer. Compared to mango isolate, N. parvum from rice-paper plant showed comparable virulence on grape stem and mango fruit. N. parvum strains exhibited pathogenicity on a variety of common weeds, which may act as disease reservoirs and boost N. parvum prevalence in commercially grown mango and grape. Melamine-impregnated paper is made by impregnating paper with melamine-formaldehyde resin and can be hot-pressed and laminated onto the surface of wood boards. If the paper has antibacterial activity, it can prevent the spread of indoor bacteria, but impregnated paper with a long-term antibacterial effect has not been proposed. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied as a reservoir of metal ions. In this study, a silver-metal organic framework (Ag-BTC) was synthesized by a green and scalable method at 60 °C (A-60) and at room temperature (A-25). The structure and thermal stability of the Ag-BTC were characterized. Compared with A-25, the structure and particle size distribution of A-60 were more regular and uniform. The thermal stability and the compatibility of Ag-BTC and MF resin were suitable for hot-pressing process. Ag-BTC in the cured impregnated paper exhibited the sustained-release performance of Ag+. The antibacterial ratio of decorated blockboards with 0.10 wt% A-25 to E. coli and S. aureus exceeded 99.99%, reaching Level I antibacterial grade. Compared with A-60-decorated blockboards, the better antibacterial activity of A-25-decorated blockboards was due to the release of more Ag+. In this work heat transfer papers were loaded with a new core–shell pigment based on precipitating thin shell of titanium dioxide on a core of rice husk silica ash TiO2/RHSA to be applied in dye sublimation printing of textile fabrics. Besides, 0.1% (w/w) cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and 1% (w/w) bentonite (Bt) were also added sequentially to improve drainage and filler retention of the paper hand-sheets made from bleached kraft bagasse pulps. The effect of the new core–shell pigment on the mechanical and barrier properties, thermal stability and surface morphology of modified paper sheets were investigated. In addition, the study of transfer printability and ease of dye release from paper to fabric in this heat transfer printing of polyester fabrics using silk-screen printing under different transfer parameters were studied. This study reports a cellulose nanofibril (CNF)-based composite paper containing dispersed CoFe2O4 particles (CNF–CoFe2O4). Besides imparting magnetization and magnetostriction, the incorporation of CoFe2O4 particles decreased the ultimate tensile strength and increased the fracture elongation of the CNF–CoFe2O4 composite paper. CNF was responsible for the tensile properties of CNF–CoFe2O4 composite paper. Consequently, the magnetic and magnetostrictive properties and tensile properties of CNF–CoFe2O4 composite paper can be controlled by changing the mixture ratio of CNF and CoFe2O4 particles. The heat and momentum transfer of crop pulp fibre suspensions were studied in a single pipe heat exchanger test loop. The data were produced at the pre-selected temperature, concentrations, and a range of flow rates. It was found that at the low fibre concentrations, the magnitude of heat transfer coefficient was higher than those of water data at the corresponding experimental conditions. However, the values progressively decreased below the water data at higher concentrations. The heat transfer data were affected by the variation of fibre characteristics, such as fibre flexibility, fibre length, fibre mechanical and chemical treatment, and the pulping methods used to liberate the fibres. The reduction of heat transfer coefficient was obtained with the enhancement of fibre flexibility observed by previous researchers for wood pulp fibres. In the present study, the characteristics of fibres and paper are correlated with heat and momentum transfer of suspensions of the fibres. Deviations in fibre properties can be monitored from the measurement of heat transfer coefficient or frictional pressure loss, and they can be adjusted by altering the degree of fibre refining treatment. Thus, the papers made from the fibre suspensions via in-situ monitoring could be uniform, consistent, and remain within the product specification. The strength of pigmented coatings is crucial in applications such as paints, lithium-ion batteries, and paper coatings. An ongoing challenge that is driven by cost has been to reduce the amount of latex binders in formulations while maintaining the strength in the coatings. This paper describes the development of an all-cationic coating formulation with lower binder content that has comparable strength to coatings made with conventional anionic formulations with higher binder concentration. Adsorption of poly diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride onto anionic precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and styrene-butadiene (SB) latexes produced cationic pigments and latexes. The all-cationic coating with 7 parts per hundred (pph) parts pigment latex levels demonstrated equal coating strength to anionic based coatings with 10 pph latex levels when applied as a coating on paper. The increase in coating strength is due to the impedance of migration of cationic binder at the paper-coating interface due to charge interactions between the cationic binder and the anionic paper fibers. As a result, a second strategy comprising layer-by-layer deposition of all-cationic formulations followed by their anionic equivalent resulted in coatings with lower strength because of failure at the coating layer interface due to lack of interpenetration of the coating components. Metagenomics has revolutionized access to genomic information of microorganisms inhabiting the gut of herbivorous animals, circumventing the need for their isolation and cultivation. Exploring these microorganisms for novel hydrolytic enzymes becomes unattainable without utilizing metagenome sequencing. In this study, we harnessed a suite of bioinformatic analyses to discover a novel cellulase-degrading enzyme from the camel rumen metagenome. Among the protein-coding sequences containing cellulase-encoding domains, we identified and subsequently cloned and purified a promising candidate cellulase enzyme, Celcm05-2, to a state of homogeneity. The enzyme belonged to GH5 subfamily 4 and exhibited robust enzymatic activity under acidic pH conditions. It maintained hydrolytic activity under various environmental conditions, including the presence of metal ions, non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100, organic solvents, and varying temperatures. With an optimal temperature of 40 °C, Celcm05-2 showcased remarkable efficiency when deployed on crystalline cellulose (> 3.6 IU/mL), specifically Avicel, thereby positioning it as an attractive candidate for a myriad of biotechnological applications spanning biofuel production, paper and pulp processing, and textile manufacturing. Efficient biodegradation of waste paper pulp residues and the evidence of biopolishing suggested that Celcm05-2 can be used in the bioprocessing of cellulosic craft fabrics in the textile industry. Palm kernel and castor oils are two vegetable oils available in tropical climates which have been proposed as an alternative to mineral oils, and their methyl esters, also called monoesters, have been previously elaborated. As the insulation system of many power transformers is made up of oil and paper, it is essential to study the interaction between these methyl esters and insulating paper. In this paper, we present the results of thermal aging of insulating paper immersed in methyl esters of palm kernel (MEPKO) and castor (MECO) oils. A comparison is made with insulating paper immersed in mineral oil (MO) based on the total acid number, the kinematic viscosity, the quantity of dissolved decay products through Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–visible) spectroscopy, the paper breakdown voltage, and the physical appearance of the insulating oils. UV–visible spectroscopy and total acid number show that the quantity of decay dissolved products of methyl esters is greater than the quantity of decay dissolved products generated by MO during initial thermal aging. However, the viscosity of MEPKO is smaller than the viscosity of MO. In addition, the paper breakdown voltage when dipped in methyl esters is greater than when dipped in MO. Therefore, methyl esters better preserve the insulating paper than mineral oils during initial thermal aging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
