Search

Over the last decade, the Low-Energy Nuclear Physics (LENP) and Nuclear Astrophysics (NAP) communities have increasingly organized themselves in order to take a coherent approach to resolving the challenges they face. As a result, there is a high level of optimism in view of the unprecedented opportunities for substantial progress. In preparation of the 2015 US Nuclear Science Long Range Plan (LRP), the two American Physical Society Division of Nuclear Physics town meetings on LENP and NAP were held jointly on August 21–23, 2014, at Texas A&M, College Station, in Texas. These meetings were co-organized to take advantage of the strong synergy between the two fields. The present White Paper attempts to communicate the sense of great anticipation and enthusiasm that came out of these meetings. A unanimously endorsed set of joint resolutions condensed from the individual recommendations of the two town meetings were agreed upon. The present LENP White Paper discusses the above and summarizes in detail for each of the sub-fields within low-energy nuclear physics, the major accomplishments since the last LRP, the compelling near-term and long-term scientific opportunities plus the resources needed to achieve these goals, along with the scientific impact on, and interdisciplinary connections to, other fields.

This white paper informs the nuclear astrophysics community and funding agencies about the scientific directions and priorities of the field and provides input from this community for the 2015 Nuclear Science Long Range Plan. It summarizes the outcome of the nuclear astrophysics town meeting that was held on August 21–23, 2014 in College Station at the campus of Texas A&M University in preparation of the NSAC Nuclear Science Long Range Plan. It also reflects the outcome of an earlier town meeting of the nuclear astrophysics community organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA) on October 9–10, 2012 Detroit, Michigan, with the purpose of developing a vision for nuclear astrophysics in light of the recent NRC decadal surveys in nuclear physics (NP2010) and astronomy (ASTRO2010). The white paper is furthermore informed by the town meeting of the Association of Research at University Nuclear Accelerators (ARUNA) that took place at the University of Notre Dame on June 12–13, 2014. In summary we find that nuclear astrophysics is a modern and vibrant field addressing fundamental science questions at the intersection of nuclear physics and astrophysics. These questions relate to the origin of the elements, the nuclear engines that drive life and death of stars, and the properties of dense matter. A broad range of nuclear accelerator facilities, astronomical observatories, theory efforts, and computational capabilities are needed. With the developments outlined in this white paper, answers to long standing key questions are well within reach in the coming decade.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can evolve in a viable technology if environmentally sound materials are developed and became available at low cost for these devices. This is especially important not only for the designing of large wastewater treatment systems, but also for the fabrication of low-cost, single-use devices. In this work we synthesized membranes by a simple procedure involving easily-biodegradable and economic materials such as poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), chitosan (CS) and the composite PVA:CS. Membranes were chemical and physically characterized and compared to Nafion®. Performance was studied using the membrane as separator in a typical H-Type MFCs showing that PVA:CS membrane outperform Nafion® 4 times (power production) while being 75 times more economic. We found that performance in MFC depends over interactions among several membrane characteristics such as oxygen permeability and ion conductivity. Moreover, we design a paper-based micro-scale MFC, which was used as a toxicity assay using 16 µL samples containing formaldehyde as a model toxicant. The PVA:CS membrane presented here can offer low environmental impact and become a very interesting option for point of need single-use analytical devices, especially in low-income countries where burning is used as disposal method, and toxic fluoride fumes (from Nafion®) can be released to the environment. 溶液試料を濾紙に滴下,蒸発させて表面のウラン密度が均一な試料を作製し,これに雲母薄片を密着させてフィッショントラック法によるウランの定量への適用を試みた.潜在トラックの影響をなくすための雲母の前処理,トラック密度とウラン量,照射条件との関係,試料中のマトリックスによる影響など実験条件を設定するための詳細な検討を行い,地質調査所発行の13種の岩石標準試料に適用してウランの定量を行った.その結果,固体試料をそのまま使用する従来のフィッショントラック法では定量が困難であったJGシリーズについても,クラスターを生じることがなく定量可能であった.又その他の標準試料についても参照値とよい一致が見られた.

The AAPM, through its members, meetings, and its flagship journal Medical Physics, has played an important role in the development and growth of x-ray tomography in the last 50 years. From a spate of early articles in the 1970s characterizing the first commercial computed tomography (CT) scanners through the “slice wars” of the 1990s and 2000s, the history of CT and related techniques such as tomosynthesis can readily be traced through the pages of Medical Physics and the annals of the AAPM and RSNA/AAPM Annual Meetings. In this article, the authors intend to give a brief review of the role of Medical Physics and the AAPM in CT and tomosynthesis imaging over the last few decades.

In magnetic fusion plasmas, a significant fraction of the kinetic pressure is contributed by superthermal charged particles produced by auxiliary heating (fast ions and electrons) and fusion reactions (a-particles). Since these energetic particles are often far away from thermal equilibrium due to their non-Maxwellian distribution and steep pressure gradients, the free energy can excite electromagnetic instabilities to intensity levels well above the thermal fluctuations. The resultant electromagnetic turbulence could induce large transport of energetic particles, which could reduce heating efficiency, degrade overall plasma confinement, and damage fusion devices. Therefore, understanding and predicting energetic particle confinement properties are critical to the success of burning plasma experiments such as ITER since the ignition relies on plasma self-heating by a-particles. To promote international exchanges and collaborations on energetic particle physics, the biannual conference series under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were help in Kyiv (1989), Aspenas (1991), Trieste (1993), Princeton (1995), JET/Abingdon (1997), Naka (1999), Gothenburg (2001), San Diego (2003), Takayama (2005), Kloster Seeon (2007), Kyiv (2009), and Austin (2011). The papers in this special section were presented at the most recent meeting, the 13th IAEA Technical Meeting on Energetic Particles in Magnetic Confinement Systems, which was hosted by the Fusion Simulation Center, Peking University, Beijing, China (17–20 September 2013). The program of the meeting consisted of 71 presentations, including 13 invited talks, 26 oral contributed talks, 30 posters, and 2 summary talks, which were selected by the International Advisory Committee (IAC). The IAC members include H. Berk, L.G. Eriksson, A. Fasoli, W. Heidbrink, Ya. Kolesnichenko, Ph. Lauber, Z. Lin, R. Nazikian, S. Pinches, S. Sharapov, K. Shinohara, K. Toi, G. Vlad, and X.T. Ding. The conference program, abstracts of all papers, and slides of oral presentations are available at the conference website:www.phy.pku.edu.cn/fsc/w18419.jsp As a measure of the breadth in current research activities, a wide range of topics in energetic particle physics were covered in the meeting program, including dynamics of various Alfven eigenmodes and energetic particle modes, energetic particle transport, energetic particle effects on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes, runaway electrons, and diagnostics of energetic particles and neutrons. Energetic particle experiments were reported on tokamaks, stellarators, spherical tori, reversed field pinches, and linear devices. Most of the papers have direct comparisons between experimental data and simulation results, a very healthy trend in the research of energetic particle physics. As an indication for the depth in current research activities and possible future directions in energetic particle physics, some exciting progress reported at the meeting is highlighted here. The 3D fields of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP) for controlling edge localized modes (ELM) are found to drive significant ripple loss of fast ions in DIII-D and ASDEX-U experiments. Similar loss is predicted for ITER RMP fields in the vacuum approximation. Fortunately, plasma response to RMP fields is found by the simulation to reduce the loss of fast ions and α-particles to a benign level. These results call for more accurate measurements and more reliable modeling of the plasma response to RMP fields in existing tokamak experiments and in future ITER experiments. Interesting progress on energetic particle transport by Alfven eigenmodes was made in reduced 1D models based on the critical gradients model, in which energetic particle pressure gradients are relaxed to the local threshold of Alfven eigenmode stability. Some experimental support for the critical gradient model was reported in DIII-D off-axis neutral beam injection (NBI) experiments, in which the fast-ion density relaxes to similar profiles for all injection angles. Further verification and validation of these reduced models by existing tokamak experiments and nonlinear simulations are needed. Impressive progress in first-principles simulations of Alfven eigenmodes and energetic particle transport was prominently featured at the meeting. Rigorous verification and validation have been successfully carried out for global gyrokinetic simulations of Alfven eigenmodes with kinetic effects of thermal plasmas and non-perturbative contributions by energetic particles. The gyrokinetic turbulence simulation provides an indispensable new capability for studying the nonlinear physics of energetic particles and Alfven eigenmodes by incorporating important physics of radial variations and toroidal mode coupling. For example, gyrokinetic simulations have found nonlinear oscillations of Alfven eigenmode amplitude and frequency consistent with experimental observations. With better understanding of linear and nonlinear properties of Alfven eigenmodes, a fruitful future direction is the self-consistent simulation of energetic particle transport, which requires long time simulations of nonlinear interactions between multiple Alfven eigenmodes. A significant step in this direction has been taken by MHD-gyrokinetic hybrid simulations, which have demonstrated that fast ion profile is flattened by enhanced transport due to resonance overlaps in multiple interacting Alfven eigenmodes with realistic amplitudes. A very interesting physics here is that the re-distribution of the energetic particle profile by an initially dominant Alfven eigenmode leads to the excitation of other Alfven eigenmodes. The broaden phase space volume for the extraction of free energy can then drive large fluctuation amplitudes and enhanced energetic particle transport. Some experimental evidences of such indirect interaction of multiple modes through energetic particles were observed in JT-60U and ASDEX-U experiments. Thirteen papers presented at the meeting were reviewed to the usual high standard of Nuclear Fusion and published in this special section. On behalf of the IAC, I would like to thank all participants for their contributions to this conference and to thank Nuclear Fusion for publishing this special section. The next meeting of this series will be organized by Simon Pinches and will be held at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, in the fall of 2015.

Accurate theoretical knowledge of the (1s2p)3P1–(1s2s)1S0 splitting in He-like ions is demanded for future experimental studies of the nuclear spin-dependent part of the weak interaction. In this paper we perform a calculation of the hyperfine structure of (1s2p)3P1–(1s2s)1S0 within 3 ≤ Z ≤ 35, Z being the atomic number. In this Z range parity nonconservation (PNC) effects are amplified by the close energy proximity of the opposite parity levels (1s2p)3P1 and (1s2s)1S0. We find that the hyperfine structure is relevant for Z > 12, and produces splitting among the hyperfine sublevels as large as 150 meV for medium Z He-like ions (Z ∼ 35).

We plan to measure several 2S–2P transition frequencies in μ4He+ and μ3He+ by means of laser spectroscopy with an accuracy of 50 ppm. This will lead to a determination of the corresponding nuclear rms charge radii with a relative accuracy of 3 × 10−4, limited by the uncertainty of the nuclear polarization contribution. First, these measurements will help to solve the proton radius puzzle. Second, these very precise nuclear radii are benchmarks for ab initio few-nucleon theories and potentials. Finally when combined with an ongoing measurement of the 1S–2S transition in He+, these measurements will lead to an enhanced bound-state QED test of the 1S Lamb shift in He+.

We extend the results of Bakalov et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2350 (2000)) on one-photon electric dipole transition line shift and broadening to the case of two-photon transitions. As an example, we consider the laser-induced transition in antiprotonic helium produced in a helium gas target. The transition is between antiprotonic helium states (n, l) = (33, 32) and (31, 30).

Atomic parity violation (APV) experiments are sensitive probes of the electroweak interaction at low energy. These experiments are competitive with and complementary to high-energy collider experiments. The APV signal is strongly enhanced in heavy atoms, and it is measurable by exciting suppressed (M1, E2) transitions. The predicted enhancement factor of the APV effect in the S-D transition in Ra+ is about 50 times larger than the S-S transition in neutral Cs. However, certain spectroscopic information on Ra+, needed to constrain the required atomic many-body theory, was lacking. Using the AGOR cyclotron and the TRIμP facility at KVI in Groningen, short-lived 212–214Ra+ ions were produced and trapped. First ever excited-state laser spectroscopy was performed on the trapped ions. These measurements provide a benchmark for the atomic theory required to extract the electroweak mixing angle to sub 1% accuracy and are an important step towards an APV experiment in a single trapped Ra+ ion. A lower bound on the radiative lifetime of the 62D5/2 state was found of 232(4) ms. This experimental confirmation of the long coherence time of the meta-stable 62D5/2 state is important in light of the possibility of using a single trapped radium ion as an optical frequency standard.

Precise spectroscopic experiments with light atoms can provide information about nuclear properties that are very difficult to obtain in electron scattering experiments. For example, relative nuclear radii of low-Z isotopes can be determined accurately from isotope shifts. Theory has attained sufficient accuracy to study exotic, short-lived halo nuclei by interpreting precise spectroscopic measurements. However, serious inconsistencies remain in the measured isotope shifts for the D1 and D2 lines of the stable isotopes (6Li and 7Li). The latest experiments, within the last decade, are in strong disagreement with each other and with theory. We report on the progress of a new experiment at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to measure these lithium D lines using an optical frequency comb. A preliminary result for the splitting isotope shift (SIS) is presented.

AEgIS (Antimatter experiment: gravity, interferometry, spectroscopy) is an experiment approved by CERN with the goal of studying antihydrogen physics. In AEgIS, antihydrogen will be produced by charge exchange reactions of cold antiprotons with positronium atoms excited in a Rydberg state (n > 20). In the first phase of the experiment, controlled acceleration by an electric field gradient (Stark effect) and subsequent measurement of free fall in a Moiré deflectometer will allow a test of the weak equivalence principle. In a second phase, the antihydrogen will be slowed, confined, and laser-cooled to perform CPT studies and detailed spectroscopy. In the present work, after a general description of the experiment, the present status of advancement will be reviewed, with special attention to the production and excitation of positronium atoms.

Antihydrogen spectroscopy promises precise tests of the symmetry of matter and antimatter, and can possibly offer new insights into the baryon asymmetry of the universe. Antihydrogen is, however, difficult to synthesize and is produced only in small quantities. The ALPHA collaboration is therefore pursuing a path towards trapping cold antihydrogen to permit the use of precision atomic physics tools to carry out comparisons of antihydrogen and hydrogen. ALPHA has addressed these challenges. Control of the plasma sizes has helped to lower the influence of the multipole field used in the neutral atom trap, and thus lowered the temperature of the created atoms. Finally, the first systematic attempt to identify trapped antihydrogen in our system is discussed. This discussion includes special techniques for fast release of the trapped anti-atoms, as well as a silicon vertex detector to identify antiproton annihilations. The silicon detector reduces the background of annihilations, including background from antiprotons that can be mirror trapped in the fields of the neutral atom trap. A description of how to differentiate between these events and those resulting from trapped antihydrogen atoms is also included.

Atomic parity violation (APV) can be measured in a single Ra+ ion, enabling a precise measurement of the electroweak mixing angle in the Standard Model of particle physics at low momentum transfer. This provides sensitivity to new particles such as extra Z0 bosons or leptoquarks. The Weinberg angle can be measured via a determination of the light shift in the forbidden 72S1/2–62D3/2 transition in a single trapped Ra+. Ultra-narrow transitions in such an ideal system can also be exploited to realize a high stability frequency standard. At the TRIμP facility of KVI, we have succeeded in the production of a series of radioactive short-lived radium isotopes. The radium isotopes produced were stopped and thermalized to Ra+ in a thermal ionizer, mass separated in a Wien filter, cooled in a gas filled radio frequency quadrupole and subsequently trapped as a cloud in a linear Paul trap. Laser spectroscopy in the trapped radium ions has been performed. The results of hyperfine structure, isotope shift, and lifetime measurements are important experimental inputs to test the accuracy of atomic theory, the precision of which is indispensable for extracting the Weinberg angle. These results are also of relevance for a possible atomic clock, based on trapped Ra+.

Recent progress on the precision laser spectroscopy of antiprotonic helium atoms, as well as on the X-ray spectroscopy of kaonic helium atoms, are presented. These two may appear to be unrelated topics (except that both involve exotic helium atoms), but in fact a past study of kaonic helium system led to the serendipitous discovery of antiprotonic helium. Some historical background connecting these two exotic helium atoms, as well as future prospects, are discussed.

We report on the measurement of the 2s-3s transition frequencies in the stable lithium isotopes and 2s-2p isotope shift measurements of 7,9,10,11Be, using a femtosecond frequency comb. For the beryllium isotopes, we extract the changes in the mean-square nuclear charge radius along the isotope chain by comparison with high-precision atomic mass shift calculations. The 2s-3s transition frequency is compared with theoretical calculations, and possibilities to extract an absolute value for the nuclear charge radius of lithium isotopes are discussed.

We show that the non-spherical charge distribution of the proton manifests itself in hydrogen hyperfine splitting as an increase (in absolute value) of the proton Zemach radius and polarization contributions.

Precise isotope shift and fine structure measurements are critically reviewed. Each experiment was checked for whether the data found for different transitions yielded consistent values for the difference in mean-square nuclear charge radius Δr2 of 6,7Li. Experiments that passed this test found Δr2 = 0.735 ± 0.036, 0.755 ± 0.023, and 0.739 ± 0.013 fm2 by studying the Li+ 1s2s 3S→1s2p 3P transition, the Li D lines and the Li 2S1/2→3S1/2 transition, respectively. These data determine the difference in mean-square nuclear charge radius 25 times more accurately than electron scattering. Similarly, averaging the fine structure data from the same experiments gives 62 678.75 ± 0.55 MHz for the 7Li+ 1s2p 3P1–2 interval, in good agreement with theory. The results for the 6,7Li 2P fine structure intervals, 10 0.52.954 ± 0.049 and 10 053.154 ± 0.040 MHz, exceed computed values by 2 MHz and yield a splitting isotope shift, which is nearly a factor of 2 lower than a theoretical estimate.

Some years have passed since the report of the first production of cold antihydrogen by the Athena Collaboration and the Atrap Collaboration at CERN, but no clear answer has been given about the roles of the two mechanisms responsible for antihydrogen formation. A new preliminary analysis of the data acquired by the Athena Collaboration in different experimental conditions seems to suggest that three-body recombination mechanism is dominant in the first tens of seconds of the overlapping of the injected antiproton cloud with the positron plasma in the nested Penning trap, while radiative capture starts to become dominant afterwards.

Experimental tests of quantum electrodynamics (QED) have developed dramatically for simple systems of hydrogen and helium, but there has also been significant progress for medium-Z hydrogenic and helium-like atoms over the last few years. In this area, tests are often based on X-ray spectroscopic measurements, and here we review some key developments. Of particular interest is the status of few-electron QED in the medium-Z regime, the fine-structure Lamb shift from X-ray measurements, tests of two-electron QED, and of np subshell and excited state QED. We discuss some recent secondary tests of the data to confirm the quality and different approaches to experimental development to address the dominant systematics in this area.

Magnetic moments of nuclei have attracted the attention of nuclear physicists since the early days. Magnetic moments of atoms played an important role in the development of quantum theory of the atom. They were easy to measure and their values posed puzzles which were solved only when the spin of the electron was discovered. Magnetic moments of nuclei were more difficult to measure but they also showed the promise of leading to deeper understanding of nuclear structure. Of particular interest were magnetic moments of odd-mass nuclei. They are the only ones to be discussed in this paper.

Cosmic ray muon imaging has been studied for the past several years as a possible technique for nuclear warhead inspection and verification as part of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty between the United States and the Russian Federation. The Los Alamos team has studied two different muon imaging methods for this application, using detectors on two sides and one side of the object of interest. In this report we present results obtained on single sided imaging of configurations aimed at demonstrating the potential of this technique for counting nuclear warheads in place with detectors above the closed hatch of a ballistic missile submarine.

This paper reports the experimental results of external proton beam radiation damage on paper. The damage effect was observed by the tensile strength degradation and the change of the structure measured by XRD. The limit doses of 2.5–3.5 MeV proton beam for some kinds of paper are given. This paper also reports the experimental results of the identification of some Chinese stamps of different editions. The proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method has also been used to identify forged notes, including false Renminbi and US Dollar found in China. The PIXE spectrum measured from the forged notes shows that the elemental composition is different from that of genuine ones. The PIXE spectra from the forged notes made by different counterfeiters are different from each other. So the PIXE method is a helpful tool to unveil the provenance of the forged notes.

Neutrino mixing and the basics of neutrino oscillations in a vacuum and in matter are considered. Recent evidence in favour of neutrino oscillations, obtained in the Super–Kamiokande, Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), Kamioka liquid–scintillator anti–neutrino detector (KamLAND) and other neutrino experiments, is discussed. Neutrino oscillations in the solar and atmospheric ranges of the neutrino mass-squared differences are considered in the framework of the minimal scheme with the mixing of three massive neutrinos. Results of the tritium β–decay experiments and experiments on the search for neutrinoless double β–decay are briefly discussed.

The isotope 222Rn belongs to the 238U decay chain and can be obtained from natural mineral sources. The fact that radon is a gas and its radionuclide daughters get implanted on surrounding materials allows a set of different experiments in radiation physics. These experiments range from isotope decay time measurement to alpha, beta and gamma spectroscopy. To solve the radioactive decay chain equations, a simple iterative method is used as an alternative to the exact analytical solution.

In response to a request from the Director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, several members of the staff of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory participated in a technical review of a draft paper by C. D. Bowman and F. Venneri dealing with the potential for nuclear criticality in the geologic disposal of fissile materials. This review consisted of a consideration of the technical issues raised in the draft paper, and did not include discussions with the authors.

Hayes et al. (2002) have presented an ''EPR model'' for separating internal 90Sr doses from external gamma-ray doses in teeth and propose application to the ''Techa River population.'' Dose reconstruction for members of the Extended Techa River Cohort (ETRC) has been a focus of our studies for many years (Degteva et al. 2000a,b; 2002), and it is disappointing that Hayes et al. did not discuss this issue with us. It is our opinion that the model proposed by Hayes et al. cannot be regarded as applicable, because it is based on unrealistic assumptions. Their ''simplified'' model is far from simple, except for its unrealistic characterization of the source configuration of 90Sr deposited within the tooth. Our objections to this paper are numerous, and only the more important are given.

An error is found in the experimental procedure used by S.K. Gogovikov, who recently reported on the detection of the γ decay of the 2 125m Te nuclear isomer delayed by 22% due to the environment of these nuclei by numerous stable 125Te nuclei.

Shortly before the Second World War time, Nishina reported on a series of prominent nuclear physical and radiochemical studies in collaboration with Kimura. They artificially produced (231)Th, a member of the natural actinium series of nuclides, by bombarding thorium with fast neutrons. This resulted in the discovery of (237)U, a new isotope of uranium, by bombarding uranium with fast neutrons, and confirmed that (237)U disintegrates into element 93 with a mass number of 237. They also identified the isotopes of several middle-weighted elements produced by the symmetric fission of uranium. In this review article, the highlights of their work are briefly summarized along with some explanatory commentaries.

The BaBar drift chamber (DCH) is used to measure the properties of charged particles created from e{sup +}e{sup -} collisions in the PEP-II asymmetric-energy storage rings by making precise measurements of position, momentum and ionization energy loss (dE/dx). In October of 2005, the PEP-II storage rings operated with a luminosity of 10 x 10{sup 33} cm{sup -2}s{sup -1}; the goal for 2007 is a luminosity of 20 x 10{sup 33} cm{sup -2}s{sup -1}, which will increase the readout dead time, causing uncertainty in drift chamber measurements to become more significant in physics results. The research described in this paper aims to reduce position and dE/dx uncertainties by improving our understanding of the BaBar drift chamber performance. A simulation program --called garfield--is used to model the behavior of the drift chamber with adjustable parameters such as gas mixture, wire diameter, voltage, and magnetic field. By exploring the simulation options offered in garfield, we successfully produced a simulation model of the BaBar drift chamber. We compared the time-to-distance calibration from BaBar to that calculated by garfield to validate our model as well as check for discrepancies between the simulated and calibrated time-to-distance functions, and found that for a 0{sup o} entrance angle more » there is a very good match between calibrations, but at an entrance angle of 90{sup o} the calibration breaks down. Using this model, we also systematically varied the gas mixture to find one that would optimize chamber operation, which showed that the gas mixture of 80:20 Helium:isobutane is a good operating point, though more calculations need to be done to confirm that it is the optimal mixture. « less

Cold antihydrogen has been produced at CERN (Amoretti et al. (Nature, 419, 456 (2002)), Gabrielse et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 213401 (2002))), with the aim of performing a high-precision spectroscopic comparison with hydrogen as a test of the CPT symmetry. Hydrogen, a unique system used for the development of quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics, has been continuously used to produce high-precision tests of theories and measurements of fundamental constants and can lead to a very sensitive search for CPT violation. After the initial production of cold antihydrogen atoms by the ATHENA group, the ALPHA Collaboration ( http://alpha.web.cern.ch/ ) has set forth on an experiment to trap and perform high-resolution laser spectroscopy on the 1S-2S transition of both atoms. In this contribution, we will review the motivations, goals, techniques, and recent developments towards this fundamental physics test. We present new discussion on predicted lineshapes for the 1S-2S spectroscopy of trapped atoms in a regime not discussed before.
