Background: Specific treatment and interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Conditions who display harmful sexual behaviour have yet to be widely evaluated. This review aims to consolidate and assess the quality of research exploring non-pharmacological interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Conditions who display harmful sexual behaviour. Method: A systemic search of electronic databases was conducted. Articles were considered for inclusion, according to identified inclusion and exclusion criteria. At the end of the search, ten papers were deemed suitable for inclusion. Results: Ten studies were considered eligible for review, including a study of follow-up data of one of the original studies. Quality assessment indicated that the majority of papers provided weak research evidence, with only two papers receiving an "adequate" rating. A consistent methodological flaw was the lack of control groups for group interventions. Conclusions: There is currently a very small research base exploring non-pharmacological interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Conditions who display harmful sexual behaviour. The current research is littered with methodological flaws, however reveals some useful information regarding the use of functional behaviour assessment and individualised treatment planning, as well as some of the limitations of using adapted group CBT interventions. Suggestions for future research include; studies evaluating the effectiveness of behavioural interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Conditions who display harmful sexual behaviour, studies which include female participants, studies which utilise control groups where appropriate, and an evaluation of interventions for those with Autism Spectrum Conditions without Intellectual Disabilities.

There are conflicting theories about the best ways to support behaviour in schools. This paper captures the perspectives of UK primary school staff regarding the advantages and disadvantages of different behaviour support approaches, in addition to exploring the facilitators and barriers to adopting relational-based approaches. Virtual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 school staff across three mainstream primary schools. A reflexive thematic analysis identified nine themes. Participants commented on the approaches' flexibility, familiarity, positive long-term behaviour change and emotional wellbeing and relationships. Key facilitators to adopting relational-based approaches included: whole-school training and understanding; quality and type of training; and working together and feeling supported. Key barriers included: changing perspectives; ease of implementation and familiarity; scarcity of resources; and persevering in the face of difficulties. Themes are discussed in light of psychological research and implications for educational practitioners and future research are considered.

The aim of this paper is to describe the development of the Phased Model of Adventure Therapy. Adventure therapy is the use of adventure experiences to engage clients on cognitive, affective and behavioural levels. Use of adventure therapy has been found to improve psychological wellbeing, self- esteem and behaviour in young people. A UK-based adventure therapy provider, the Creative Outdoors Group, provides care to young people who are currently looked after by the Local Authority and display complex emotional and/or behavioural needs. The Phased Model of Adventure Therapy has been developed in association with the Creative Outdoors Group to promote improvements in psychological and behavioural functioning. The model consists of several theoretical models applied alongside a regime of adventure or outdoor activities. This paper describes the theoretical underpinnings of the Model and how this was applied to an adventure therapy regime.

The importance of reducing restraint and restrictive interventions in special schools has been recognised across the four nations of the UK. Government guidance for England and Wales, and recommendations produced by Restraint Reduction Scotland, both reference Positive behavioural support (PBS) as an evidence-based approach that can be used to proactively support pupils with, or at risk of, behaviours that challenge. The Department of Education of Northern Ireland recommends the development of behaviour support plans to support children with special education needs and disabilities. Special schools, however, also have a responsibility to set high expectations for every pupil, to provide access to the respective national curricula and to meet individual needs. School-wide positive behavioural support (SW-PBS), originated in the USA in the 1990s in response to a body of evidence that showed improved social and academic outcomes when behavioural interventions were implemented across whole school settings. It is increasingly being adopted in the UK. Drawing upon examples from schools in England and Wales with which the authors are familiar, this paper outlines the rationale for a special schools' model of SW-PBS and illustrates the ways in which this can be adjusted to meet the specific needs of each setting.

Children identified with special educational needs (SEN) and behavioural difficulties present extra challenges to educators and require additional supports in school. This paper presents views from special educational needs coordinators (SENCos) on various strategies used by educators to support children identified with SEN and problematic behaviours. The data were collected from telephone interviews with six SENCos from the UK's South West Peninsula. The SENCos were invited to participate because their school was participating in a cluster-randomised trial of a teacher classroom management course (Incredible Years). Using thematic analysis to analyse the data, this paper illustrates strategies deemed by SENCos to be successful in the support of children identified with SEN. The management strategies generated by participating SENCos were then mapped onto those taught as part of the classroom management course for comparison. Findings indicate that strategies from the training programme appear to be appropriate for children identified with both SEN and behavioural difficulties.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has evolved a considerable evidence-base in recent years. One area wherein the model has demonstrated strong empirical support is through its application within the workplace. However, little empirical work has been carried out within the educational workforce and even less has been done with school leaders specifically. This paper reports on an initial feasibility study, using a group-based ACT programme to promote the well-being of school leaders. Seven leaders attended the programme, and completed established measures of well-being, burnout and valued living before and after the programme. The patterns of change indicated improvements on all three measures from pre- to post-intervention. Transcripts from semi-structured interviews were thematically analysed, revealing three themes: Increasing Awareness; Building Resilience; and a Safe and Supportive Group. Results and analyses are discussed in terms of future directions for the field and in terms of potential implications for the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Many people with mental health issues are workless; despite this, good quality work is often promoted as beneficial for wellbeing. In this article, I explore my personal reflections about managing my experiences of mental distress in the workplace, whilst working as a senior lecturer in social work in the UK. The potential of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support the improvement of my mental wellbeing in the workplace is discussed alongside the central role of the therapist in delivering this intervention. The opportunities ACT offers to support a person with mental health issues to manage the impact of mental health symptoms in the workplace are highlighted, and its potential for wider implementation across mental health services is considered.

In this paper, the author argues for a more humanistic approach to children and young people who face difficulties in their personal and social lives. Increasingly, young people in the developed world who are troubled or troublesome in school or in their neighbourhoods are categorised and labelled in terms of psychiatric disorder. The number of children taking psychotropic drugs is increasing rapidly in the most affluent countries. The need for wider markets for drug manufacturers suggests that this phenomenon will soon become even more widespread. While it may sometimes be appropriate to prescribe medication for children with mental health problems, in countries like Britain, the USA and Australia this solution can often be too quickly reached. In this paper, the author argues for the development of a multi-dimensional model which recognises that individual young men and women have their own subjectivities and may have personal troubles; but she also acknowledges that the way such troubles are expressed and described reflects the enmeshing of the individual experience with a complex range of social factors.

Aims: This paper describes the application of a clinical cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) intervention with an adolescent in a further education setting who was experiencing low mood and anxiety. Method: A retrospective single case study design was used based on data collected from outcomes and systematic feedback measures previously administered throughout the course of therapy. Qualitative data were also gathered including: reflections within a therapeutic diary, case notes, materials from the therapy, and a narrative summary detailing the implementation of therapy. This information was triangulated with records of session by session feedback measures to examine the relationship between the process of implementation in therapy and the young person's idiographic responses. Findings: Outcome measures derived from the intervention suggest that it was of limited effect in improving the young person's symptoms of low mood and anxiety. Variability in markers of progress between sessions was associated with factors of change, including divergences in expectancy between the educational psychologist (EP) in the role of therapist, motivational factors, systemic and extra-therapeutic factors. Conclusions: Findings underscore the importance of considering factors for change such as therapist, expectancy, relationship, technique, and extra-therapeutic based factors in the implementation of therapy with post-16 populations. This supports implementation research indicating that there is considerable room to engage individuals with the process of CBT and integrate motivational and systemic factors into decision making about therapy. Implications for research and educational psychology practice are discussed.

Purpose: In response to an increasingly high level of exclusion rates for boys within secondary school in the UK, this study seeks to explore the value of restorative practice and justice for changing student behaviour. Design/methodology/approach: As a piece of action research, the authors aimed to look at how methods of restorative practice could work with one student in a secondary school, following a whole school's move towards a personal responsibility charter. The focus of this research remained on the individual male subject, rather than the educational institution. It is based upon a process of reflecting upon key events that happened throughout the study. This research will use qualitative data gained from observing the student at school, as well as interview and written feedback from the subject himself and school staff. The paper is designed to offer real and informative insight into the value of restorative justice and practices. Findings: Restorative practices had little overall impact on improving the subject's behaviour in school. He was able to have a mature discussion with an adult about the behaviour he was demonstrating. Nevertheless, when put back in the classroom situation he was unable to make a conscious decision to alter his negative behaviour. However, his skills in conferencing to resolve conflict were developed through the authors' involvement with him, as well as other school staff, and he was able to understand the school's new charter. Originality/value: This paper contributes to restorative justice and practice literature and is insightful because of the action research approach taken.

The paper is based on a research project that sought to understand schools' behaviour management strategies from the perspective of students who had the most experience of them. It focuses on the contrasting ways in which teacher and student subjectivities are framed and positioned within the discourse. It considers how student accounts were constructed within the framework of the project by engaging with Butler's ideas of how one gives an account of oneself in response to another's call. Also heeding Foucault's call to pay attention to the conditions of truth-telling, the paper looks at how student accounts can be read and put to use. Pupil accounts reveal other selves that encourage a re-thinking of the prior recognition of pupils as (primarily) "naughty" pupils and pose the question of whether they exhibit an aesthetics of the self that maintains a critical relation to existing norms. By destabilising recognition, they expose the limits of the dominant discourse of behaviour management and encourage a deconstructive stance of "persistent critique" towards it. Along the way, the paper also touches upon the methodological dilemmas in researching behaviour management. (Contains 1 note.)

This paper reports a school-based study of peer perceptions of a range of behaviours associated with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. A Year 7 (aged 11-12) cohort of pupils were administered a pre-questionnaire in their first term. During the second term the cohorts were split into two; one group received a normally taught unit within a core subject (English); the second group (the intervention group) were taken through a unit which also developed key skills in that core subject, but had as its focus behaviour. The whole cohort was then given the questionnaire again in Term 3. Whilst some effects of the intervention on pupils' perceptions were found, these were weaker than expected. The paper explores the findings and provides some insights into peer perceptions. It concludes that for a more sustained effect in altering pupil perceptions, the programme of intervention may need to be spread over a longer period. (Contains 1 table.)

The purpose of this paper is to examine the existing evidence about the impact of sport/physical activity programmes on positive youth development in the context of education. The issue of youth disaffection is topical and a number of authors and policy makers have acknowledged that physical activity/sport may be an effective way of helping to address the problem. As a result, a number of initiatives aimed at re-engaging disaffected or disadvantaged young people through physical activities have been developed and implemented in schools in the UK. Two such initiatives, the HSBC/Outward Bound project and Youth Sport Trust/BSkyB "Living For Sport" programme, are discussed within this paper, and key findings from the monitoring and evaluation of each initiative are presented. Over a period of three years, more than 7000 pupils have been engaged in these programmes, and complete data sets have been collated for over 50% and 90% of Sky Living For Sport and HSBC/Outward Bound participants respectively. The findings suggest that both of these projects have had a positive impact on the behaviour and attendance of large numbers of pupils, and that engagement in lessons and relationships with both teachers and peers have improved and can be sustained. The findings also demonstrate, however, that impact is highly individualised and context-specific in many cases, and that positive impact is more likely to be sustained when some or all of the following project features are in place: effective matching of pupil needs with the specific project objectives; locating project activities outside of the "normal" school context; working closely with pupils to choose activities, set targets and review progress; establishing positive relationships between project leaders/supporters (mentors) and pupils; and giving pupils the opportunity to work with and for others. This paper describes an extended action research project run in a large secondary school over an 18-month period. The work was part of a wider strategy for change within the school. The data presented here describes some of the features of the change process and reflections on its impact. A key aim was to challenge and enable teachers to modify their behaviour in order to increase the number of specific positive feedback statements they made in their classrooms to their students. The paper reports on three main strands of data that were collected: observation of teacher and pupil behaviours in classrooms, feedback from questionnaires completed by teachers who took part in staff groups formed to discuss behaviour management, and qualitative data from interviews and a focus group with staff at the end of the project. All provide evidence of a change in teachers' behaviour and information about teachers' attitudes to the change process. (Contains 2 tables and 4 figures.)

Mathematics is a core subject in the UK curriculum, with high standards achievement a policy of the UK government. Innovative approaches and strategies have been advocated to achieve these high standards. One approach that has been advocated is Precision Teaching, supported by its successful application in schools in the United States. For this study, a 12-week programme was devised to develop student fluency in the multiplication timetables. A key skill task was devised and scores compared before and after programme implementation. Pre-programme scores revealed poor student performance on this key skill. Post-programme results show an improvement for children using Precision Teaching, with some outperforming the average of their classmates. The paper endorses previous findings that fluency is important for student progress through the curriculum. It also endorses research findings that adding practice and timed assessment improve student performance levels. These results were achieved with minimal disruption and materials. The paper recommends educational practitioners to support further research into the practicalities and suggested benefits of fluency-orientated education. (Contains 4 figures.)

This paper argues that there are common factors in successful classroom practice with regard to managing behaviour in classrooms, and particularly when teachers successfully meet the needs of pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD). These common factors could be used to predict the success of current and future initiatives and strategies in meeting the needs of children with SEBD. The paper draws on of research undertaken at the University of Birmingham (UK) over the past ten years, as well as experience as a classroom teacher, consultant and staff development provider.

School-based mental health prevention programmes can be effective but their adoption within schools will depend on their social acceptability. We report a qualitative evaluation summarising the views of children (115), parents (20) and school staff (47) about a universal school-based anxiety prevention programme FRIENDS. This study was conducted as part of a large scale randomised controlled trial (n = 1362) involving 40 schools in the UK providing primary education to children aged 7-11. Reported overall experience of the programme was very positive, with all three major components of the cognitive behaviour therapy programme (emotional, cognitive, and behavioural) being accepted well and understood by children. The programme was considered to be enjoyable and valuable in teaching children important skills, particularly emotional regulation and coping. Children provided examples of using the skills learned during FRIENDS to manage their emotions and solve problems. However, teachers were concerned that the programme overlapped with the current school curriculum, required additional time and almost half were unable to identify any tangible changes in the children's behaviour. Whilst this paper provides evidence to support the social validity of the FRIENDS anxiety prevention programme, the concerns raised by teachers question the longer-term sustainability of the programme.

In response to the heightened risk that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) poses to the health and lives of people with obesity, in 2020 the U.K. government launched a new package of policies intended to stimulate weight loss among the country's population. In this article, I present a critical discourse analysis of the policy paper which announced these new measures. I identify the discourses that are used to represent things, people, and processes in this policy text. These discourses are interpreted in terms of broadly neoliberal ideologies of public health management. Taken together, the discourses identified contribute to a broadly neoliberal ideology of public health management. It is argued that the policy paper represents an instance of "lifestyle drift," as it initially appears to engage with social and economic determinants of health but ultimately neglects these in favor of focusing on individual lifestyle factors, particularly in the shape of individuals' "choices." There is conflict between the views projected by nurses and by policy directives about what constitutes care and caring. While there is a plethora of works on the conceptualization of care and caring, the influence of discourse remains unexplored. There is a small number of studies from the perspective of social constructionism, but very few take a Foucaultian-influenced analysis to identify the prevailing discourses and their power in the socially constructed situation of care and caring. This work explores the discursive roots of the current debate and shows how the power associated with the discourses of each social arena have shaped nursing practice. The findings are drawn from a grounded theory project using situational analysis. A total of 22 one-on-one interviews were completed with 14 community-based practitioners. The analysis revealed the social construction of four distinct arenas, each containing differing constructs of a caring nurse. Each specifically constructed social arena had associated discourses, to which it aligned. It revealed the conflicts between the four social arenas, the negotiation that took place, and how these conflicts and negotiation both gave power and repressed the differing world views of a caring nurse. The paper shows how alignment to discursive positions constructed three distinct senses of care.

This paper considers different conceptualisations of school discipline within both UK education policy and wider educational and philosophical literature. Initially, it is noted that notions of "behaviour management" dominate discourses about school discipline. It is suggested that this is unhelpful as behaviour management skills are underpinned by a behaviourist understanding of learning that denies pupils an important degree of agency over their own development--pupils are rather portrayed as unruly and morally deficient. It is therefore maintained that discipline needs to be reclaimed as an educational concept as it can be a valuable personal quality whose possession indicates a capacity to set important goals for oneself and see them through even in the face of difficulty. With reference to the diverse philosophies of Dewey, P.S. Wilson, Durkheim, Oakeshott, and MacMurray, it is contended that a re-conceived notion of school discipline might enable less controlling and behaviourist and more educational discipline in at least three ways: the ethical (by guiding the ethical development of pupils), the humanising (by encouraging pupils to act for the sake of others rather than only think about themselves) and the epistemic (by supporting pupils to engage in the pursuit of valued interests and knowledge).

Cancer patients undergoing major interventions face numerous challenges, including the adverse effects of cancer and the side effects of treatment. Cancer rehabilitation is vital in ensuring cancer patients have the support they need to maximise treatment outcomes and minimise treatment-related side effects and symptoms. The Active Together service is a multi-modal rehabilitation service designed to address critical support gaps for cancer patients. The service is located and provided in Sheffield, UK, an area with higher cancer incidence and mortality rates than the national average. The service aligns with local and regional cancer care objectives and aims to improve the clinical and quality-of-life outcomes of cancer patients by using lifestyle behaviour-change techniques to address their physical, nutritional, and psychological needs. Estimates suggest that around a quarter of adults with learning disabilities living in the community have difficulties controlling their anger. Angry or aggressive behaviour can have serious repercussions, including loss of residential or day placements, admission to hospital and reduced quality of life. In addition, the psychological well being of both paid and family carers can be adversely affected. A previous review of this area (Whitaker 2001) suggested equivocal results for cognitive-behavioural (CBT) approaches. The current study provides an update to this review, considering papers published in the last 10 years and expanding its scope to include a variety of therapeutic interventions. A systematic search of peer reviewed journals identified 14 relevant documents, the majority of which were group-based and CBT in their approach. Overall, methodological weaknesses made it difficult to draw any firm conclusions about the effectiveness of the different approaches. Implications for clinical and research practice are discussed.

The term "Special Needs" is one which is poorly defined in general and particularly nuanced in the Lifelong Learning Sector, where its meaning has been extended to incorporate economic and social needs in addition to the more "traditional" interpretation of the term. Although the sector apparently operates inclusively, welcoming learners with special needs, there are differences in the management of the behaviour and relationships of students, which are arguably generated by the varying definitions applied to the type and level of the challenges they face. This paper explores these differences by examining them from the philosophical standpoints of Bourdieu and Foucault.

People diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) deserve the same respect as any other person and should be free to benefit from scientific research that can help them achieve skills which enable them to reach their full potential. Over the past 40 years Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) has utilised inductive, natural science methods to investigate techniques for the analysis and augmentation of socially significant behaviours. Unfortunately, many individuals with ASD in the UK cannot avail of these techniques because of an obdurate reliance on randomised controlled trials (RCTs) as the single most respectable measure of effectiveness of interventions. In this paper we focus on how the debate about RCTs is played out in the "autism wars". (Contains 5 figures.)

This paper reports an action research project in a school in the UK designed to investigate the impact of a brief Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) intervention in promoting skills of non-teaching staff in positive behaviour management. A summary of the literature in relation to VIG is provided before describing the project and data collected. Ten teaching assistants (TAs) from a secondary school took part in an intervention using VIG. The impact on TA skills and confidence was assessed using participant ratings of the specific target outcomes of the intervention using the Target Monitoring and Evaluation (TME) system. Participants' experiences of the intervention were explored during a focus group discussion after the intervention had taken place. TME data suggested a positive impact on TA skills and confidence to support individual pupils, while thematic analysis of focus group data showed a number of themes relevant to the application of VIG in this context, including promotion of effective staff development. At the national level there has been a call for more therapeutic interventions and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been identified as one approach that can be used. The training of educational psychologists (EPs) has been extended to three years and this provides an opportunity to increase the depth of knowledge of particular therapeutic models and their use in educational settings. This paper reports developments within two UK educational psychology initial professional training programmes, involving the design of units with a specific emphasis on the development of CBT competencies with children and young people. It details an evaluation of trainee educational psychologists' (TEPs') experiences of undertaking CBT case-work during their placements within educational psychology services. Focus groups were run on each programme using a common script, transcribed and then responses coded using ATLAS.ti. This led to the development of a conceptual framework that gives an understanding of the main barriers and facilitators to implementing CBT interventions within schools. There are implications for educational psychology services, trainers and service users as well as the TEPs themselves. (Contains 1 figure.)

Childhood anxiety is a common condition which, if untreated, can cause considerable distress and impairment and increase the likelihood of mental health problems in adulthood. Developing good emotional health in children is therefore an important objective which has been emphasised in recent governmental initiatives and policies. In particular, schools have been identified as having an important role in promoting positive mental health in children. This paper summarises the different approaches, outcomes and shortfalls of school-based anxiety prevention programmes. One particularly encouraging programme based upon cognitive behaviour therapy, the FRIENDS for Life programme, is described. Outcomes from UK-based studies evaluating FRIENDS are summarised and the way the programme can be integrated within schools to complement other initiatives discussed. Finally, limitations of the current research are discussed and issues about the practical implementation of FRIENDS in schools highlighted. (Contains 2 figures.)

The positive impact that nurture groups can offer is well documented. This study aims to describe the evaluation of a nurture group intervention across six schools. In contrast to previous research, children accessed the group for a maximum of four mornings per week. The findings show that this model did not comprise the gains reported in previous studies. The results show a significant positive effect on the children with reference to their behaviour both in school and at home. In addition, the intervention appears to have contributed further to the whole school system. Schools reported an improved ethos and an increased capacity to support children with social and emotional difficulties. This paper concludes by considering the new Scottish Curriculum guidelines "A curriculum for excellence" and whether the principles and theoretical underpinnings of nurture groups can be fully integrated into a mainstream environment. This article describes the development of a community-based sex offender treatment programme for learning disabled clients (CB-SOTP-LD), the Keep Safe Programme (KSP), by the Learning Disabilities Team of County Durham and Darlington Priority Services (CDDPS) NHS Trust. The aim of this paper, by the treatment lead, is to share experiences of successfully setting up CB-SOTP-LD and to offer suggestions to those undertaking similar tasks in the future. Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is increasingly being used with people with learning disabilities. One of the challenges in working this way is effectively sharing and understanding the formulation of the client's problem. One could argue that only with a shared understanding can there be collaboration between the therapist and the client. By utilizing current theory around CBT for psychosis and CBT for people with learning disabilities, a diagram that was understandable to the client was developed to illustrate each formulation. The aim of the paper is to describe a method for engaging in a collaborative approach with three men with psychosis utilizing current thinking in CBT for people with learning disabilities and CBT for psychosis.

The authors work in a city local education authority Special Educational Needs Support Service with an Anti-Bullying Project that continues to develop effective approaches to dealing with bullying in schools. This paper describes the project's use of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and reports on the outcomes of a large number of interventions, particularly with pupils of secondary school age. The support group approach, developed within this project and published in "Educational Psychology in Practice," is referred to in the government's anti-bullying pack as a key strategy. The authors show that SFBT provides another effective strategy to support pupils vulnerable to bullying in both primary and secondary schools. (Contains 1 figure.)

Previous research provides evidence of grassroots academics adopting a variety of behaviours in response to quality-led change initiatives in higher education. Although administrators may seek answers to the question "when will academics learn about quality?", perhaps there is a need to address a more fundamental question: "How do academics conceive quality in higher education?". Background: Community-based physical activity programs typically evolve to respond to local conditions and feedback from stakeholders. Process evaluations are essential for capturing how programs are implemented, yet often fail to capture delivery evolution over time, meaning missed opportunities for capturing lessons learned. Methods: This research paper reports on a staged approach to a process evaluation undertaken within a community-based UK 12-month physical activity program that aimed to capture change and adaptation to program implementation. Twenty-five one-to-one interviews and 12 focus groups took place over the 3 years of program delivery. Participants included program participants, management, and service deliverers. Results: Program adaptations that were captured through the ongoing process evaluation included changes to the design of promotional material, program delivery content, ongoing training in behavior change, and the addition of regular participant community events. The authors address how these strands evolved over program delivery, and how the process evaluation was able to capture them. Conclusion: The pragmatic evaluation approach enabled changes in response to the local context, as well as improvements in the program to be captured in a timely manner, allowing the delivery to be responsive and the evaluation flexible. Because controlled drinking is achievable by younger people with fewer alcohol-related problems, moderation rather than abstinence is realistic goal for most young offenders. Behavioral self-control training is one type of intervention which can effectively encourage moderate drinking. Studying effects young offenders expect alcohol to have under various conditions may contribute to development of cognition modification components of interventions. (ABL)

Aim: To describe the process and outputs of a workshop convened to identify key priorities for future research in the area of remission of type 2 diabetes, and provide recommendations to researchers and research funders on how best to address them. With the ultimate aim of enabling the remission of type 2 diabetes to become a possibility for more people. Methods: A 1‐day research workshop was conducted, bringing together 31 researchers, people living with diabetes, healthcare professionals and members of staff from Diabetes UK to identify and prioritize recommendations for future research into remission of type 2 diabetes. Results: Workshop attendees identified 10 key themes for further research. Four of these themes were prioritized for further focus: (i) understanding how to personalize lifestyle approaches based on biology, patient choice and subtypes; (ii) understanding the biology of remission; (iii) understanding the most effective approaches to implementation of lifestyle interventions; and (iv) understanding the best approaches to combining therapies (gut hormones, other drugs, lifestyle approaches and bariatric surgery). Conclusions: This paper outlines recommendations to address the current gaps in knowledge related to remission of type 2 diabetes. Foodborne illness is a major public health concern, often approached by focusing on socio-demographic groups who are considered most ‘vulnerable’ to foodborne disease such as elderly people or pregnant women. Based on a review of existing literature and original research with UK consumers, this paper proposes an alternative approach to analysing vulnerability to foodborne illness. Challenging conventional approaches that focus on the inherent vulnerability of particular socio-demographic groups, the paper emphasises the context-specific and situational nature of vulnerability and the practices and pathways through which people negotiate specific threats which may, in turn, affect their future vulnerabilities. The paper also addresses the gap between lay and expert knowledge that may increase exposure to particular food-related risks. Evidence is provided from research on the food safety and health implications of consumers’ everyday domestic practices including behaviours that do not comply with current ‘best practice’ advice. The evidence supports a turn from notions of inherent vulnerability, based on the membership of certain socio-demographic groups, towards a more nuanced understanding of situational vulnerability, based on the context and logic informing specific social practices. Background: Engaging in regular physical activity requires continued complex decision-making in varied and dynamic individual, social and structural contexts. Widespread shortfalls of physical activity interventions suggests the complex underlying mechanisms of change are not yet fully understood. More insightful process evaluations are needed to design and implement more effective approaches. This paper describes the protocol for a process evaluation of the JU:MP programme, a whole systems approach to increasing physical activity in children and young people aged 5-14 years in North Bradford, UK.Methods: This process evaluation, underpinned by realist philosophy, aims to understand the development and implementation of the JU:MP programme and the mechanisms by which JU:MP influences physical activity in children and young people. It also aims to explore behaviour change across wider policy, strategy and neighbourhood systems. A mixed method data collection approach will include semi-structured interview, observation, documentary analysis, surveys, and participatory evaluation methods including reflections and ripple effect mapping.Discussion: This protocol offers an innovative approach on the use of process evaluation feeding into an iterative programme intended to generate evidence-based practice and deliver practice-based evidence. The paper examines the impact of individual and organisational factors on two simultaneous environmental social marketing interventions (SmartPrint and heating/cooling) and types of behaviours (recycling, printing and heating/cooling), among employees of a British City Council. Using a quantitative methodology, in the form of a situated experiment, self-reported attitudes, perceptions of organisational support, self-reported behaviours and actual behaviours were measured before and after the interventions. The interventions generated significant changes in employees’ overall environmental behaviour, heating/cooling behaviour and in some perceptions of organisational support (support and incentives/rewards). Findings are used to detail recommendations for future campaigns aiming to improve organisations’ environmental performance and to drive enduring employee behavioural change. The mental health benefits of physical activity and exercise are well‐documented and asylum seekers who may have poor mental health could benefit from undertaking recommended levels of physical activity or exercise. Digital mobile applications are increasingly seen as feasible to precipitate behaviour change and could be a means to encourage asylum seekers to increase their levels of physical activity and exercise. This paper reports on a study that aimed to assess the feasibility of asylum seekers using the digital animation as a tool to change behaviour and increase their physical activity and exercise levels. A feasibility study underpinned by the principles of the COM‐B behaviour change model was undertaken in West Yorkshire, UK, in 2019. Thirty participants were purposively recruited and interviewed. Peer interpreters were used as necessary. Deductive thematic analysis was undertaken to analyse the data. Overall, participants were positive about the feasibility of asylum seekers using the application as a behaviour change intervention. All expressed the view that it was easy to follow and would motivate them to increase their physical activity levels. Participants identified facilitators to this as the simplicity of the key messages, the cultural neutrality of the graphics and the availability of the mobile application in different languages. Identified barriers related to the dialect and accents in the translations and the over‐simplicity of the application. This study has identified that a targeted digital animation intervention could help asylum seekers change their behaviour and hence improve their health and well‐being. In designing such interventions, however, researchers must strongly consider co‐design from an early stage as this is an important way to ensure that the development of an intervention is fit for purpose for different groups.
