This paper examines the relationship between specialisation patterns in science, technology and economic performance in Norway by using the following indicators: business R&D specialisation, economic specialisation in terms of value-added and employment, and scientific publications involving Norwegian industry compared with scientific publication patterns in the country. Important economic sectors have been identified and their research and publication output analysed. It is demonstrated that these sectors are unusually active in research activities compared to EU15. Policy documents suggest that quantitative information is important in the development of climate and energy policy. This is supported by quantitative studies research into the use of numbers in governance, which tends to assume that numbers have sufficient epistemic authority to be used by policymakers because they are believed to be trustworthy since they are produced through mechanical objectivity. This paper questions such assumptions, by analysing the extent of extra-calculative work when providing numeric information to policymakers. We term such efforts numeric work and analyse the extent and content of such work based on interviewed experts who are engaged with calculating climate and energy issues in the context of policymaking in Norway. Numeric work shares features with the actor–network theory concept of translation but differs due to the dialogic interaction between calculation actors and policymakers that includes efforts to improve the transparency of calculation, which counters a complete black-boxing of calculation results. In the literature on mission-oriented innovation supply side and tech-oriented approaches have been complemented by broader and more inclusive societal approaches. Here, it is highlighted that both directionality and broad anchoring of diverse stakeholders across private, public, and civic domains are key to successful implementation. Still, it is unclear how these dimensions relate and unfold in practice. Using digital literacy in education as an example of mission-oriented innovation, this paper investigates what prerequisites and capabilities are needed to envision and govern such processes. Based upon a case study of innovative teaching practices in twenty-five classes at ten primary schools in Norway, the paper finds that the motivation, dedication, and engagement of the teachers is not primarily related to the digital technologies themselves, but to the professional and pedagogical anchoring of the digital teaching tools. This paper extends the monopsony literature by taking a task-based approach and estimating the causal effect of concentration on labour market outcomes. Using detailed employer–employee data from Norway, we find that our job task-based measure shows lower degrees of concentration than conventional industry- and occupation-based measures. Exploiting mass lay-offs as exogenous shocks to local labour demand, we show that workers who experience mass separations in more concentrated markets have substantially worse subsequent labour market outcomes than workers in less concentrated markets. This paper analyses the extent to which zero-carbon energy transitions are a securitized phenomenon in selected countries and what that means for sustainability transitions more broadly. Without taking a normative stance on securitization, we focus on the ways in which security is constructed through in-depth interviews with experts in the energy, security, and defense sectors in Estonia, Finland, and Norway. We use a securitization framework to study how securitization as a process is discussed by identifying "securitization moves." The analysis is also connected to the literature on sustainability transitions: the zero-carbon energy transition can be depicted as a large-scale socio-technical transition related to environmental sustainability. Our findings suggest that energy transitions are securitized to an extent because we were able to detect all "securitization moves" in the interview data. The interviews showed different ways in which security is interpreted and what is achieved by its construction in specific contexts. For example, the identified threats were connected to preserving sovereignty in Estonia, the inability to openly discuss threats related to energy transitions created new concerns in Finland, and the connections between the two sectors were urgently and inescapably addressed in Norway only after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. This paper focuses on scientists working with CRISPR in Norway, where genetic modification is thought to be a particularly stigmatized technology with strict regulation and a strong consumer skepticism. Drawing on actor–network theory, we investigate the translation work these scientists perform to mobilize CRISPR as a more legitimate technology and how they relate to society's perception of GMO. We find that the scientists make co-productions of CRISPR as a 'more controllable' and 'socially useful' technology and show how they attempt to mobilize industry, farmers, media, politicians, and youth by (1) distinguishing CRISPR from GMO, (2) assuring the consumers of CRISPR's safety, and (3) creating trust through openness about the risks. We conclude that the scientists' efforts are twofold; they work on solving societal challenges, as well as making continuous efforts to manage their relationship to society. An important part of this work was seen as providing knowledge and creating 'new understandings' about CRISPR; however, if research should take place in conversation with society's views and opinions, we suggest that the scientists should enter into a two-way dialog with the consumers about these definitions. Women tend to experience a substantial decline in their labour income after their first child is born, while men do not. Do such 'child penalties' also exist in the political arena? Using comprehensive administrative data from Norway, we find that women are less likely than men to secure elected office after their first child is born. The effects already manifest from the nomination stage, where mothers receive less favourable rankings on party lists relative to comparable fathers. This paper provides a structural panel GMM (P-GMM) estimator of the elasticity of substitution between capital and labour that does not depend on external instruments, and which can be applied in the presence of biased technical change. We identify the conditions under which P-GMM is a consistent estimator and compare it to a fixed effects estimator. Using a Monte Carlo study, we find that the P-GMM estimator is nearly unbiased provided the number of time periods (T) is not too small. We show analytically how the small- T bias is related to metrics of weak identification. In an application on manufacturing firms in Norway, we estimate the elasticity of substitution to be 1.9 using the P-GMM and 1.0 using the fixed effects estimator. Neglecting simultaneity may thus lead to the conclusion that capital and labour are complements or can be described by Cobb–Douglas technology, when, in fact, they are substitutes. The literatures on productive interactions and related frameworks depict impact processes as collaborative efforts to permeate various boundaries between research and societal stakeholders. However, the impact literature is biased towards looking at these processes from the researcher side. This paper analyses policymakers' interactions with researchers and the different forms of boundary work that ensue, which contributes to improved understanding of the stakeholder side of interactions. Our point of the departure is the interactions related to Research and development (R&D) units and their networks in the central administration in Norway. Using in-depth interviews with twenty-two civil servants in the field of welfare policy, we show how the combination of competitive and collaborative modes of boundary work makes interactions productive. Because research is a strategic asset in the policy domain, control over knowledge production and autonomy to decide when to follow the evidence (or not) is a central feature of knowledge work in policy organisations. Since the beginning of the 1990s, absolute gravity has been observed at several locations in Norway with FG5-type instruments to investigate the temporal gravity changes due to glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Previous work suggests that some of the estimated secular gravity trends may be affected by remaining unmodelled geophysical effects, such as the effect of local hydrology. In this work, we compute hydrological gravity effects from global hydrological models for the far zone and a combination of regional run-off models and modelling of residual hydrological effects for the near zone. The method developed in this paper is first tested at the geodetic observatory in Wettzell, Germany, where both high-resolution superconducting gravimeter data as well as a regional hydrological model are available. Next, the method is transferred to two Norwegian gravity sites (NMBU and TRYC), with long time-series of frequent absolute gravity observations using FG5-226. At these sites, we investigate the impact of the hydrological gravity correction on data variability as well as estimated secular gravity trends. We find that the data variability is reduced by up to 40 per cent when applying the modelled hydrological gravity effect at TRYC. The reduction is less at NMBU where the amplitude of the hydrological signal and in consequence also the signal-to-noise ratio are smaller. We also note that it is challenging to determine the near zone residual hydrological effects without carefully taking into account the hydrogeological setting of the area for modelling such effects. When utilizing the long corrected absolute gravity series to determine the gravity trends, we find that the estimated trends are not significantly different from the uncorrected observations. However, the uncertainty of the estimated trends is reduced significantly for a limited corrected gravity series. We further suggest repeatability analysis of the absolute gravimeter. From the long time-series at NMBU we find a significant step coinciding with hardware replacement. We find that the fit between observed and modelled secular trends improves when introducing the step. Ethics and knowledge are seen as being the two core aspects of professional self-understanding. Nonetheless, many researchers in social work argue that the difficulties found in social workers' professional identities may be linked to the conventional Western knowledge paradigm and its focus on the technical–rational application of scientific theory and knowledge in professional practice. This qualitative interview study examines professional self-understanding among eighteen Norwegian social workers employed at the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV). The study found an ambivalent self-understanding with regard to ethics and knowledge. Professional ethical problems are kept private, even though the social workers view ethics as being a fundamental aspect of their professional self-understanding. They keep their ethical dilemmas to themselves, and they also keep quiet about work that is successful. This paper suggests that the privatising of professional ethical dilemmas reflects the ambiguous position of ethics in the dominant understanding of knowledge, and the reduction of ethics that underlies this view. The paper also suggests that the ambivalent professional self-understanding among social workers will endure for as long as social work is dominated by the prevailing view on knowledge and professionalism. Background and Objectives In the 21st century, the future of the Norwegian welfare state is broadly debated. In Norway, as in other countries, concerns regarding the sustainability and affordability of the welfare state in light of the projected population development have been voiced in public and academic discourse, and not least in governmental statements and documents. Because we consider texts, such as government white papers, as both products and producers of discursively based understandings of the social world, a close examination of policy documents can provide insight into the predominant understanding of a distinct phenomenon in a specific society at a particular point in time. Research Design and Methods The article is based on a critical discourse analysis of 3 recent Norwegian government policy documents addressing the older adult population. Results We demonstrate that prominent ideas from the widely contested successful aging paradigm are embedded and forwarded in current Norwegian policies, where ideas about successful and healthy aging produced and reproduced in the documents frame and shape expectations toward older adults. Discussion and Implications We argue that the ideas and ideals of successful aging and neoliberalism in parallel pave the way for changes in the historically generous and comprehensive Norwegian social democratic welfare state. For decision makers, the rhetoric of successful aging that emphasizes activity, productivity, self-reliance, and freedom of choice is undoubtedly more convenient to communicate to the public than explicit arguments for the necessity of downscaling public services. A likely channel for Dutch disease, turning a presumably blessed resource windfall into a curse, is the wage formation process. By utilizing the shift from decentralized and uncoordinated wage bargaining in the Norwegian petroleum sector to coordinated bargaining, this paper analyses the effectiveness of a governmental intervention aimed at preventing the extraordinary petroleum wage inflation to become detrimental to the economy. The empirical analysis shows that the intervention was successful as insider weights and insider hysteresis effects were reduced and that the system of coordinated wage bargaining was re-established. In this paper we exploit the introduction of an early retirement reform in Norway to provide new evidence on interactions in public policies across programs and household members. The analysis generates four results. First, the reform decreased the employment of the directly affected individuals. Second, the introduction of the early retirement option caused program substitution away from alternative welfare programs. Third, it reduced employment among spouses of directly affected individuals. Finally, the reduction in spousal employment was driven by take-up of disability insurance. These results demonstrate that interactions in public policies can have a substantial impact on the effect of welfare reforms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modern geophysical data acquisition technology makes it possible to measure multiple geophysical properties with high spatial density over large areas with great efficiency. Instead of presenting these co-located multigeophysical data sets in separate maps, we take advantage of cluster analysis and its pattern exploration power to generate a cluster map with objectively integrated information. Each cluster in the resulting cluster map is characterized by multigeophysical properties and can be associated with certain geological attributes or rock types based on existing geological maps, field data and rock sample analysis. Such a cluster map is usually high in resolution and proven to be more helpful than single-attribute maps in terms of assisting geological mapping and interpretation. In this paper, we present the workflow and technical details of applying cluster analysis to multigeophysical data of a study area in the Trøndelag region in Mid-Norway. We address the importance of carefully designed pre-processing procedures regarding the input data sets to ensure an unbiased data integration using cluster analysis. Random forest as a supervised machine learning method for classification/regression is strategically employed post-clustering for quality evaluation of the results. The multigeophysical data used for this study include airborne magnetic, frequency electromagnetic and radiometric measurements, together with ground gravity measurements. Due to the nature of these input data, the resulting cluster map carries multidepth information. When associated with available geological information, the cluster map can help interpret not only bedrock outcrops but also rocks underneath the sediment cover. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the labor market consequences of an exogenous increase in the supply of skilled labor in several municipalities in Norway, resulting from the construction of new colleges in the 1970s. We find that skilled wages increased as a response, suggesting that along with an increase in the supply there was also an increase in demand for skill. We also show that college openings led to an increase in the productivity of skilled labor and investments in R&D. Our findings are consistent with models of endogenous technical change where an abundance of skilled workers may encourage firms to adopt skill-complementary technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the co-evolution of science, technology and innovation policy and industrial structure in a small, open, resource-based economy (Norway). The contributions of the paper are threefold. First, it develops an evolutionary and historically oriented approach to the study of the development of these policies that may have wide applicability. Second, it focuses on a particular type of innovation, innovation in resource-based activities, that differs in many respects from the more commonly studied case of innovation in 'high-tech' industries. Third, the paper advances our understanding of the roles played by institutions and politics in innovation. Previous work on national systems of innovation has devoted little attention to these matters, possibly because much of this work examines 'snapshots' of various innovation systems at a specific point in time and lacks historical depth. This paper revisits a study by Machery et al. (2004), suggesting that, in experimental versions of Kripke's (1980) fictional cases on the use of proper names, Westerners are more likely than East Asian participants to show intuitions compatible with Kripke's causal-historical (CH) theory of reference. We conducted two experiments, recruting participants from Norway and Bangladesh, either in English (experiment 1; N = 75) or in the participants' native languages (experiment 2; N = 60), using modified cases and a new approach to data analysis. We replicated the results of Machery et al. (2004), but we show that the residual finding—i.e., that participants who are not aligned with CH produce responses consistent with a definite descriptions (DD) theory of reference—does not hold. Most participants in our experiments, and nearly all those who do not provide CH answers, respond as predicted by a theory that accommodates speaker's reference in reasoning about uses of proper names, not according to DD. We suggest that cross-cultural variation in this task is real. However, explanations of variation within or across cultures need not invoke competing theories of reference (CH vs DD), and can be unified within a single, broadly Kripkean analysis that honors the basic distinction between semantic reference and speaker's reference. While the increase in internationalisation of science is well documented, there is less literature that explicitly addresses the driving forces behind this trend. In this paper we investigate the relationship between science policy and the growth of international scientific collaboration. We look into whether overall globalisation trends can explain changes in internationalisation, or whether such changes may be better understood as consequences of organised political efforts within the area of science and research policy. We also focus on the relationship between international collaboration and foreign funding, because the share of research funding coming from foreign sources has risen in most countries. Introduction: Quality of life is included in the economic evaluation of health services by measuring the preference for health states, i.e. health state utilities. However, most intervention studies include a disease-specific, not a utility, instrument. Consequently, there has been increasing use of statistical mapping algorithms which permit utilities to be estimated from a disease-specific instrument. The present paper provides such algorithms between the MacNew Heart Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (MacNew) instrument and six multi-attribute utility (MAU) instruments, the Euroqol (EQ-5D), the Short Form 6D (SF-6D), the Health Utilities Index (HUI) 3, the Quality of Wellbeing (QWB), the 15D (15 Dimension) and the Assessment of Quality of Life (AQoL-8D). Methods: Heart disease patients and members of the healthy public were recruited from six countries. Non-parametric rank tests were used to compare subgroup utilities and MacNew scores. Mapping algorithms were estimated using three separate statistical techniques. Results: Mapping algorithms achieved a high degree of precision. Based on the mean absolute error and the intra class correlation the preferred mapping is MacNew into SF-6D or 15D. Using the R squared statistic the preferred mapping is MacNew into AQoL-8D. Implications for research: The algorithms reported in this paper enable MacNew data to be mapped into utilities predicted from any of six instruments. This permits studies which have included the MacNew to be used in cost utility analyses which, in turn, allows the comparison of services with interventions across the health system. Background The Nordic countries represent a unique case study for the COVID-19 pandemic due to socioeconomic and cultural similarities, high-quality comparable administrative register data and notable differences in mitigation policies during the pandemic. We aimed to compare weekly excess mortality in the Nordic countries across the three full pandemic years 2020–2022. Methods Using data on weekly all-cause mortality from official administrative registers in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, we employed time series regression models to assess mortality developments within each pandemic year, with the period 2010–2019 used as reference period. We then compared excess mortality across the countries in 2020–2022, taking differences in population size and age- and sex-distribution into account. Results were age- and sex-standardized to the Danish population of 2020. Robustness was examined with a variety of sensitivity analyses. Results While Sweden experienced excess mortality in 2020 [75 excess deaths per 100 000 population (95% prediction interval 29–122)], Denmark, Finland and Norway experienced excess mortality in 2022 [52 (14–90), 130 (83–177) and 88 (48–128), respectively]. Weekly death data reveal how mortality started to increase in mid-2021 in Denmark, Finland and Norway, and continued above the expected level through 2022. Conclusion Although the Nordic countries experienced relatively low pandemic excess mortality, the impact and timing of excess mortality differed substantially. These estimates—arguably the most accurate available for any region in capturing pandemic-related excess deaths—may inform future research and policy regarding the complex mortality dynamics in times of a health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Background Socioeconomic inequalities constitute an important focus area for public health, and it has long been established that higher educational level and longer lifespan are correlated. Little is known about decennial time trends in poor self-rated health and mental distress. Methods This study linked decennial cross-sectional survey data on self-rated health and mental distress from the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) from 1984 to 2019 with educational registry data using personal identification numbers. Survey participation ranged from 50 807 to 77 212. Slope index of inequality (SII) and relative index of inequality (RII) were calculated using generalized linear models in Stata. Analyses were stratified by sex and age, using the age categories of 30–59 years and 60–80 years. Results Absolute inequalities in self-rated health and mental distress between educational groups have stayed relatively stable throughout all rounds of HUNT. Relative inequalities in self-rated health and mental distress have generally increased, and both men and women with the lowest education level were more likely to experience poor self-rated health and mental distress relative to those with the highest education level. RII in self-rated health increased over time for both sexes and both age groups. RII for mental distress increased in both sexes and both age groups, except for men and women aged 60–80. Discussion This study shows that relative inequalities in self-rated and mental health in the Norwegian population are still persistent and have increased. We report from a study of how uncertainty about whether a given inequality reflects performance or luck shapes distributive behaviour. We show theoretically that the reaction to uncertainty depends on how people trade-off the probability of making a mistake when redistributing, and the size of this mistake. We show experimentally that uncertainty causes a strong egalitarian pull among a majority of meritocratic individuals. The theoretical framework and the experimental results are supported in general population surveys in the United States and Norway. Our findings suggest that how people handle uncertainty about the source of inequality may be of great importance for understanding distributive conflicts in society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The aim of this paper was to compare the effects of demography (population aging and the increasing fraction of tertiary educated) and behaviour (intra-cohort ageing and inter-cohort change) on long-term change in the fraction of daily smokers (FrS), using a counterfactual framework. Methods Using aggregated data on smoking prevalence, education and population size from Norway 1978 to 2017, the probabilities of smoking for men and women were calculated using a pseudo-panel approach. From these estimates, four counterfactual scenarios of FrS were constructed by holding the age effect, the cohort effect and the distribution of age and education constant over time. Results FrS decreased from 45 to 14% among men, and from 33 to 14% among women over the study period. Holding the age distribution constant did not have any substantial effect on FrS. Holding the distribution of education constant led to a five percentage points increase in FrS among women, but not among men. In the case of no intra-cohort ageing, FrS would have been 11/12 percentage points higher among women/men. The corresponding figures for no inter-cohort change were 13 points for women and 27 points for men. Conclusions If the age distribution had remained stable over time, FrS would have been almost identical to the current level. In contrast, if smoking behaviour had remained stable over the life course or between birth cohorts, FrS would have been substantially higher than it is today. Background: Lower levels of sun exposure in childhood have been suggested to be associated with increased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS). In this paper we extend previous work, using two novel analytical strategies.Methods: Data collected in the Environmental risk factors In MS (EnvIMS) study, a case-control study with MS cases and population-based controls from Canada, Italy and Norway, were used. Participants reported on sun exposure behaviours for 5-year age intervals from birth; we focused on the first three age intervals (≤15 years). We compared two life course epidemiology conceptual models, the critical period and the accumulation model. We also used latent class analysis to estimate MS risk for different latent sun exposure behaviour groups.Results: The analyses included 2251 cases and 4028 controls. The accumulation model was found to be the best model, which demonstrated a nearly 50% increased risk of MS comparing lowest reported summer sun exposure with highest [risk ratio (RR) = 1.47 (1.24, 1.74)]. The latent sun exposure behaviour group, characterized by low sun exposure during summer and winter and high sun protection use, had the highest risk of MS; a 76% increased risk as compared with the group with high sun exposure and low sun protection use [RR = 1.76 (1.27, 2.46)].Conclusions: Our analyses provide novel insights into the link between sun exposure and MS. We demonstrate that more time indoors during childhood and early adolescence is linked with MS risk, and that sun protection behaviours in those who spend most time indoors may play a key role in increasing risk. Background. According to the World Health Organization, depression ranks as a major contributor to the global burden of disease. A large proportion of adult depressions had their first appearance in adolescence. Brief and reliable rating scales are needed for early detection. Objective. The aim of this study is to validate the WHO-5 and the HSCL-6 for detection of depression among adolescents. Methods. The project is a GP multicentre study conducted in Denmark and Norway. A total of 294 adolescents (14-16 years) responded by answering a paper- or web-based questionnaire and later completed a Composite International Diagnostic Interview, which was used as the gold standard. Depression was defined by ICD-10 criteria. Criterion validity was examined, the likelihood ratios measured and cut-offs for depression were calculated using the Youden index. Results. The prevalence of depression was 11.8% in our sample. The optimal cut-off point was 11 for the WHO-5 test and 9 for the HSCL-6 test. There were no gender differences. For the WHO-5 and the HSCL-6, respectively, the sensitivity was 0.88 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.74-0.96] and 0.85 (95% CI: 0.70-0.94), the specificity was 0.80 (95% CI: 0.75-0.85) and 0.79 (95% CI: 0.74-0.84) and the likelihood ratio was 4.5 and 3.8 (P = 0.39). We observed no statistically significant diagnostic differences with respect to nationality or administration procedure. Conclusions. This paper examines a sample of ninety-three child welfare workers' perceptions of emotional relations in risk assessment situations.Workers from England, Norway and California (USA) are interviewed about risk factors in a vignette. Seventy-three per cent of the total workers identify the emotional issues described in the vignette as a risk factor, but a lower percentage of the American workers do so. Nearly all of these workers identify the mother's lack of meeting her daughter's emotional needs as a risk factor; however, the analysis shows that only approximately one-third of these workers elaborate on the possibleconsequencesandreasons for this lack of attachment. Evenfewersuggest services that can improvethe situation.Thefindings suggest thatemotional issues havea relatively low importance in a risk assessment situation but that there are differences by country. Zooplankton in the Barents Sea has been monitored by the Institute of Marine Research in Norway on autumn cruises since 1986, using a standardized procedure with determination of dry weight biomass in three size fractions following splitting of the sample in two halves. Along with summer data for the early 1980s, we can now describe changes of zooplankton biomass over four decades. The biomass of the central Barents Sea has fluctuated inversely with collapses and recoveries of the Barents Sea capelin stock, which is a major planktivore. Zooplankton biomass in the central Barents Sea was low in 1983 and 1984, driven by low abundance of Calanus finmarchicus , followed by a pronounced peak in 1987 associated with a "first" collapse of the capelin stock. Biomass showed another pronounced peak in 1994, driven by the small size fraction and interpreted to reflect an advective signal from the adjacent Norwegian Sea. In the two most recent decades, there have been divergent trends, with a relatively high biomass in the inflowing Atlantic water, reflecting a second summer generation of C. finmarchicus , and decreased biomass in the central area, reflecting a lower abundance of Calanus glacialis driven by a combined effect of capelin predation and climate. Background: Pelvic floor disorders are common and associated with impaired sexual function in women. Aim: To assess women with pelvic floor disorders and describe factors associated with not being sexually active and those associated with sexual function in sexually active women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted that included nonpregnant women with symptoms of pelvic floor disorders who were referred to the urogynecologic and surgical outpatient clinic at 2 Norwegian university hospitals: St Olavs Hospital, Trondheim University Hospital, and the University Hospital of Northern Norway, Tromsø. Women answered a questionnaire anonymously. Outcomes: Pelvic Organ Prolapse Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire–IUGA Revised. Results: Of 157 respondents, 111 (71%) reported being sexually active (with or without a partner), and 46 (29%) reported not being sexually active. As compared with sexually active women, not sexually active women were older (mean ± SD, 60.2 ± 13.3 vs 51 ± 12.1 years; P < .001), more were menopausal (78% vs 47%, P = .001), and more had symptom debut <1 year (31% vs 9%, P < .001). They reported more distress related to pelvic floor disorders, especially pelvic organ prolapse. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, menopausal women and women with symptom debut <1 year were 4 times more likely to be not sexually active than premenopausal women (odds ratio, 4.0; 95% CI, 1.7-9.2) and women with symptom debut ≥1 year (odds ratio, 4.0; 95% CI, 1.5-10.7). In sexually active women, colorectal-anal distress was negatively associated with 5 of 6 domains of sexual function: arousal/orgasm (ß = –0.36; 95% CI, –0.02 to –0.005), partner related (ß = –0.28; 95% CI, –0.01 to –0.002), condition specific (ß = –0.39; 95% CI, –0.002 to –0.009), global quality (ß = –0.23; 95% CI, –0.02 to –0.002), and condition impact (ß = –0.34; 95% CI, –0.02 to –0.006). Clinical Implications: Health care professionals should discuss sexual function in patients with pelvic floor disorders, especially menopausal women and women with colorectal-anal symptoms. Strengths and Limitations: The study used condition-specific measures and recruited women from 2 university hospitals with wide range of age. Limitations include the small sample size and wide confidence intervals. The number of women who considered themselves not sexually active was low, and item nonresponse levels among these women where somewhat high. Of 625 eligible women, 200 (32%) answered the questionnaire. Sexual health and sexual function are still surrounded with taboo, and some women were probably not comfortable answering the questions. Conclusion: Menopausal women and women with recent onset of symptoms of pelvic floor disorders are more likely to be sexually inactive, and colorectal-anal symptoms have the most negative impact on sexual function in sexually active women. Good ethics or political and cultural censoring in science? – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 493–497.Peer-reviewed journals are the cornerstones to communicating scientific results. They play a crucial role in quality assurance through the review process, but they also create opportunities for discussions in the scientific community on the implications of the results or validation of methods and data. This requires that journals adhere to commonly accepted scientific standards and are open about their editorial policy. Norwegian scientists experience problems in getting research on minke whales accepted for publication where the data have been collected in association with commercial whaling. The journal Biology Letters refuses to publish papers based on data from the Norwegian whale register while publically claiming a sole focus on scientific quality. Although there are good arguments for claiming that clearly unethical research should not be rewarded with scientific publications, one also has to realize that some fields of research are beset with unresolved ethical and cultural debates. In these cases, it is to the benefit of the progress of science, and indeed society, to be open about the issues and support arguments through scientific studies. Political or cultural censoring of scientific information will in any case jeopardize the role of journals in quality assurance of scientific research and undermine the credibility of science as a supplier of objective and reliable knowledge. Pure shear wave data are only very rarely acquired for offshore site investigations and exploration. Here, we present details of a novel, seabed-coupled, shear wave vibrator and field data recorded by a densely populated, multicomponent ocean-bottom cable, to improve shallow soil characterization. The prototype shear wave vibrator uses vibroseis technology adopted for marine environments through its instalment on top of a suction anchor, assuring seabed coupling in combination with self-weight penetration. The prototype is depth rated to 1500 m water depth, and can be rotated while installed in the seabed. The philosophy is to acquire fully complementary seismic data to conventional P- and P-to- S-converted waves, in particular for 2-D profiling, VSP (vertical seismic profiling) or monitoring purposes, thereby exploiting advantages of shear waves over compressional waves for determining, for example, anisotropy, small-strain shear modulus and excess pore pressures/effective stress. The source was primarily designed for reservoir depths. However, significant energy is emitted as surface waves, which provide detailed geotechnical information through mapping of shear wave velocities in potentially high resolution of the upper soil units. To fully utilize pure shear wave content, a proper analysis of surface waves is paramount, due to the proximity of surface wave propagation speed with shear wave velocities. The experiment was carried out in the northern North Sea in 364 m water depth. Cable dragging was necessary to obtain close receiver spacing (2.5 m effective spacing), with total line length of 600 m. Frequency-waveform transforms reveal both Scholte and Love waves. Up to six surface wave modes are identified, that is, fundamental mode and several higher surface wave modes. The occurrence of these two different dispersive surface wave types with well-resolved higher modes allows for a unique analysis and inversion scheme for high-resolution mapping of physical properties in the shallow subsurface as well as anisotropy, which is discussed in an accompanying paper. Background. According to the World Health Organization, depression ranks as a major contributor to the global burden of disease. A large proportion of adult depressions had their first appearance in adolescence.Aim. Because primary health care professionals lack valid instruments for early identification of depression, we sought to validate HSCL-10. The design of study is a GP multicentre study conducted in Norway and Denmark. The setting of the study is adolescents (14–16 years) responded by answering a questionnaire and later completed a Composite International Diagnostic Interview, which was used as the gold standard. Depression was defined by International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD-10). Both internal and external validity were examined, the likelihood between pretest and posttest measured and a cut-off point for depression calculated by using the Youden index.Results. The Hopkins Symptom Checklist-10 test (HSCL-10) met the criteria for external and internal validity. When analysed separately, the criteria were met both in Denmark and in Norway and both for paper and web. The optimal cut-off point for the HSCL-10 test was 16 (HSCL-10 = 16/10 items = 1.6), with no gender differences. For girls and boys, respectively, it yielded a sensitivity of 87.5% and 87.5%, specificity of 72.4% and 87.9% and likelihood of 3.2 and 7.2.Conclusion. This paper sets out to provide an analysis of refugee integration policies in Sweden and Norway, by means of comparative analysis. There is a particular focus on the ideological foundations of the Swedish and Norwegian refugee integration policies, and the main programmes drawn on by the countries’ authorities in order to integrate refugees. Further, the focus is widened to identify and analyse the changes, disparities and ambiguities in the Swedish and Norwegian refugee integration policies. The paper also seeks to examine how their experience can help in understanding the limitations of extensive state assisted integration measures. It is maintained here that these Scandinavian countries have developed extensive state sponsored integration programmes of a magnitude which is unique in a European context and elsewhere, and that housing and employment assistance are the two major pillars in both Swedish and Norwegian refugee integration policies. The findings suggest that Sweden and Norway have undergone similar experiences in respect of the challenges and long term outcomes of refugee integration policy-making. Although based on the principle of a strong welfare state, which provides extensive resettlement and integration assistance to refugees, refugee integration policies in Sweden and Norway have not succeeded in equalizing the initial inequalities between refugees and the rest of the population. Life as a refugee attempting to create a new life in an unfamiliar country is filled with uncertainties. Due to a lack of language and cultural knowledge, misunderstandings occur. People in these circumstances are vulnerable to experiences of humiliation. The majority population's prejudices against strangers also contribute to newly-arrived refugees experiencing more humiliating situations than do others. This paper attempts to analyse experiences of humiliation among refugees, using Somali refugees as a case. The principal research question here is why and how refugees experience humiliation in exile. What kinds of situations trigger feelings of humiliation in refugees and why are these situations experienced as humiliating? This paper attempts to develop a theory of humiliating experiences among exiles, based on interviews with 27 Somalis and 20 Norwegians, as well as participatory observations and meetings with a focus group. Refugees in a society vastly different from that of their home country might be vulnerable to intimidation, and might also be met in hurtful ways. Humiliation occurring in the home country might continue in the new country, and new types of humiliating situations might develop between individuals from the home country in the new setting. The theory set forth here identifies typical reactions of the refugees to certain humiliating situations, and offers some suggestions for ways to prevent humiliating experiences. Background: In this paper, we investigate cross-sectional and prospective relationships between various socioeconomic indicators and different health behaviours among boys and girls at ages 13-21, and whether socioeconomic status (SES) is related to changes in health behaviour over time. Methods: The study is based on a 10-year, two-generation prospective cohort study of health and lifestyle factors among a sample of Norwegian adolescents and their parents. Data presented here were collected at the ages of 13 (baseline), 15, 18 and 21. Parental and adolescent reports of socioeconomic factors were assessed along with a number of health-enhancing and health-compromising behaviours, both as single behaviours and as part of health behaviour indices. Results: Relatively few significant relationships are observed between parental occupation and adolescents' reported health behaviour when the latter is analysed as single behaviours. A significant, but weak, social gradient in health-enhancing behaviour is observed when measuring health behaviour as composite indices rather than single forms of behaviour. This is apparent both when applying parental SES variables or adolescents' own educational aspirations as proxy measures of their socioeconomic status. Conclusion: Future investigations of the presence of a social gradient in adolescent health behaviour should focus on composite measures of health behaviour. In Norway, the project Henrik Ibsen's Writings is currently establishing a new historical—critical edition (both electronically and in print) of the complete writings of playwright Henrik Ibsen. In the years the project has existed, there has been a continuing internal discussion on the relationship between philology and text encoding. This paper outlines the philological principles of the project and describes its methods of establishing texts and ensuring quality. It also looks at and describes, in detail, the consequences of combining philology and text encoding through examples of problems solved in the encoding of complex changes in manuscripts as well as parallel structures in verse dramas. The paper concludes that it is very important, in a project such as Henrik Ibsen's Writings, to focus on the relationship between philology and text encoding because of the influence, even in the smallest details, of these on each other. This paper addresses the impacts of degree of risk aversion, subsidy scheme and choice of utility function on optimal farm plans in Norwegian agriculture. Data from a farm business survey (1991-1997) are combined with subjective judgements to formulate a two-stage utility-efficient programming model. Under existing policy and market conditions, the ex ante expectation was that farmers' risk attitudes are unlikely to have a large effect on choice of enterprise mix. The results tend to confirm this view, and a farmer who is hardly risk averse at all would choose the same farm plan as a very risk averse farmer. Factors such as subsidy schemes, market conditions for the products and available labour on the farm are found to be more important determinants of the optimal plans than farmers' risk attitude or the form of the utility function. This paper explores a number of models for the growth of a barnacle goose population. These geese spend their summers breeding in Spitsbergen and then winter in Caerlaverock on the Solway Firth. The population growth is modelled using exponential models and a variety of logistic models. The paper shows how each of the growth phases in the post-war history of this population can be related to conservation measures. Microsoft Excel spreadsheets have been used to find appropriate parameters for each of the models. The literature on sectoral systems of innovation evidences the crucial importance of sectoral specificities in innovation. Also, the proximity framework enables the exploration and analysis of how various actors establish collaborative ties. However, there has not yet been much cross-fertilization between the proximity literature and sectoral systems of innovation. First, we conceptually integrate the proximity literature into sectoral studies by underlining the differences and commonalities across sectors. Second, we use a dataset of research and development (R&D) projects subsidized by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) between 2005 and 2016 to analyze the impact of geographical and cognitive proximities on collaborative tie formation in four Norwegian sectors (biotech, oil and gas, marine, and maritime). The results indicate that cognitive proximity and colocation in large cities are positively related to the creation of collaborative ties across all sectors. Yet, the joint effects of cognitive proximity and colocation in large cities vary across sectors and seem to be correlated with the complexity of sector-specific technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper draws on an international comparative study of social work decision making in cases that are on the edge of care order proceedings, involving child protection workers from Finland, Norway, England and the USA (California). It focuses on workers' responses in an online questionnaire to questions about the use of independent experts to inform their decisions about whether or not to take a case to court. All the countries try to avoid taking cases to court if possible, but the ways they do this vary considerably. The findings show the different meanings and implications that the request for an independent assessment has in the different systems. Workers' views reflect the roles and tasks that independent experts have in the different countries; and these in turn reflect their distinctive child protection systems and wider child welfare approaches. The paper offers a starting point for reflection about one's own system, and suggests that the well-known distinction between family support and child protection models should not be seen as a simple binary categorisation, but rather as a complex, contingent and contested continuum. Background: Norway has achieved a noteworthy reduction in smoking prevalence over the past forty years. In 2015, 13% of Norwegians aged 13-74 smoked daily and a further 9% smoked occasionally. One of the objectives of the Norwegian 2013-16 national strategy for tobacco control is to achieve a reduction in the daily smoking prevalence to<10% by 2016. This paper aims to estimate how long it will take for Norway to achieve the 10% smoking prevalence. Methods: A dynamic forecasting model using smoking prevalence data from national survey data on the prevalence of current, former and never smokers in the Norwegian population from 1985 to 2012 was used to estimate future smoking prevalence in the Norwegian population based on a continuation of current patterns in smoking cessation and initiation rates. Results: The result suggests that Norway's smoking prevalence among men and women will continue to decline if current trends of smoking initiation and cessation continue. Our model predicts, based on figures for 1985-2012, that the prevalence of current daily and occasional smoking among men and women will not fall below the 10% mark until 2029 for men and 2026 for women, if current trends continue. This paper examines a set of seven tables that show the intergenerational social mobility of Norwegian men with respect to trends in relative mobility. The seven tables are constructed from the Norwegian Election Studies, a unique set of data covering a time-span of more than 30 years from 1957 to 1989. These tables are analysed by means of log-multiplicative and log-linear models in which relative social mobility is represented by parameters for class-specific immobility and scaled association. The model selection process ends with slight preference for the best trend model over a model of stability in relative mobility. The former model displays stable immobility parameters, and shows a linear downward trend in the scaled association since 1965, with a deviant low value for 1957, whereas in the stability model, both the immobility and the scaled association parameters are stable in the time-period covered by the study. The observed trend in the scaled association parameters could also be seen as a part of a cyclical pattern, which may result if the scaled association should increase in the future. If the hypothesis of a trend towards greater openness is correct, it should be observed first among young people. Re-estimating the models for men 40 years or younger separately does suggest that the model with a negative linear trend comes out strengthened in terms of fit, but the scaled association parameters show more variation around the estimated trend line. In conclusion, the study indicates a tendency towards less rigidity in the class structure, captured by the negative trend in the scaled association since 1965. This tendency is not found for the immobility parameters, which seem to be quite stable over time. These conflicting results, together with the relatively good fit of a model of stability in social fluidity, may alternatively be interpreted as 'trendless fluctuations' in relative mobility. Organizational innovation, its persistence, its relationship with technological innovation, and their influence on firm performance remain under-researched. These issues are investigated using an integrated firm-level data set obtained from two recent waves of the Norwegian Community Innovation Survey (CIS 3 and 4) and firms’ financial accounts. A Heckman two-step estimation, to ensure against potential sample selection bias, was used to demonstrate that between 1999 and 2004 a number of Norwegian firms were persistent in organizational innovation, and this persistence raised the (positive) effects of organizational innovation on their performance. The results also reveal that many firms undertook, and benefited from, different types of organizational innovation, and such benefits were increased by the combinative effect of organizational and technological innovation. Based on complete population data, with the exact same definitions of family class background and economic outcomes for a large number of birth cohorts, we examine post-war trends in intergenera-tional economic mobility in Norway. Standard summary statistics indicate stable or mildly declining rank–rank mobility for sons and sharply declining mobility for daughters. The most conspicuous trend in the mobility patterns is that men and women born into the lowest parts of the parental earnings distribution have fallen behind in terms of own earnings rank, as well as a number of other quality-of-life indicators. A considerable part of this development can be explained by changes in the class distribution of educational attainment and in its rising influence on earnings rank. We argue that although the educational revolution has diminished the role of inherited ability, it has enlarged the influence of the family as provider of a social learning environment. Objectives To examine all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in consecutive cohorts of patients with incident RA, compared with population comparators. Methods The Oslo RA register inclusion criteria were diagnosis of RA (1987 ACR criteria) and residency in Oslo. Patients with disease onset 1994–2008 and 10 matched comparators for each case were linked to the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry. Hazard ratios for all-cause and CVD mortality were calculated for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of observation using stratified cox-regression models. Mortality trends were estimated by multivariate cox-regression. Results 443, 479 and 469 cases with disease incidence in the periods 94–98, 99–03 and 04–08 were matched to 4430, 4790 and 4690 comparators, respectively. For cases diagnosed between 1994 and 2003, the all-cause mortality of cases diverged significantly from comparators after 10 years of disease duration [hazard ratio (95% CI) 94–98 cohort 1.42 (1.15–1.75): 99–03 cohort 1.37 (1.08–1.73)]. CVD related mortality was significantly increased after 5 years for the 94–98 cohort [hazard ratio (95% CI) 1.86 (1.16–2.98) and after 10 years for the 99–03 cohort 1.80 (1.20–2.70)]. Increased mortality was not observed in the 04–08 cohort where cases had significantly lower 10-year all-cause and CVD mortality compared with earlier cohorts. Conclusion All-cause and CVD mortality were significantly increased in RA patients diagnosed from 1994 to 2003, compared with matched comparators, but not in patients diagnosed after 2004. Background: Few studies have examined alcohol-related sickness absence among young employees, although young adults are known to drink quite heavily. There are substantial differences in drinking patterns between men and women, yet gender differences have rarely been the main focus in research on alcohol-related sickness absence. Thus the present paper aims to examine gender differences in the prevalence of alcohol-related sickness absence among young employees in Norway, and in the associations between drinking patterns and such absence. Further, to examine whether the prevention paradox applies to alcohol-related sickness absence among both genders. Methods: A sample of employed young adults, 49.7% male (N = 1762, mean age = 28.3; SD = 1.9), was obtained from a general population survey of Norwegians. Self-reported measures on alcohol-related sickness absence and various drinking measures were applied. Results: Men reported absence from work due to drinking almost twice as often as women. There was a statistically significant gender difference in the drinking–absence association only for one of the three alcohol measures, indicating a stronger relationship among women. The heaviest drinkers (about 6% of the sample) reported a disproportionally large share of alcohol-related sickness absence (19%), yet the vast majority of such absence was found among the moderate drinkers (81%). Conclusions: Alcohol-related sickness absence is more common among men than women. This gender difference may reflect differences in drinking habits rather than the likelihood of being absent after drinking. This paper presents the findings of a study exploring child protection workers' (CPW) perspectives on work with families when child sexual abuse (CSA) is suspected. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven CPWs focusing on their recent involvement in cases of CSA suspicion. By employing the principles of Grounded Theory approaches, the CPWs' challenges and opportunities were organised in five thematic domains: own competence in handling cases of CSA suspicion, support from colleagues and leaders, co-operation with specially trained professionals, interaction with parents regarding protection and care, and interaction with the children. The analysis revealed three intersecting areas in need of further development. The first concerns the unambiguous reports from CPWs on inadequate training and educational preparation for meeting the challenges. The second relates to how in-depth, specialised knowledge of CSA can be combined with generalist CPWs' possibility of continuous and engaged involvement for the best of the children and families in question. The third emphasises the need of more direct interaction between CPWs and children when suspicion of CSA is raised. The article examines the political processes associated with the funding and organisation of Norway's Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway, from the 1950s to the 1970s. Attempts to transform and develop Haukeland Hospital were complex and ‘the Haukeland issue’, as it became known in Norway, involved multiple agencies and a wide range of often conflicting interests. Participants included the City of Bergen, the University of Bergen, Hordaland County Council, central state health authorities, politicians, medical professionals and the media. This paper analyses these events in terms of the broader political struggles related to the development of hospital systems in the post-war period, focusing particularly on the ‘centre–periphery’ relationships within Norway's health care system. Taking a closer look at a characteristic mini-bicycle, the DBS Kombi, this paper seeks to explore the multifarious ways this iconic artefact affords material memories. Manufactured by the Norwegian company Jonas Øglænd A/S from 1967 to 1987, it has been a paradigmatic feature of the personal and social recollections of generations of Norwegians—including the author. Spurred by the considerable interest expressed recently in the Kombi bicycle as a vintage item, this study reflects on the role of material artefacts in mediating memories. Viewed against a backdrop of a broader trend often described as retro, or ‘the culture of revival’, personal engagement on the part of design historians with objects such as the Kombi bicycle may help to shed light on the inner workings of vintage culture and the notion of nostalgia in contemporary society.
