In order to clarify which types of research is more conducive to improving innovation performance, we use the panel data of key universities in China from 2009 to 2017 for empirical research. The results show that basic research intensity is significantly positive correlated with innovation performance, while paper influence, patent novelty plus the interaction between paper influence and patent novelty are all playing a mediating role between basic research intensity and innovation performance. Furthermore, we use applied research intensity, experimental development intensity and provincial panel data for variables substitution and sample subdivision to carry out robustness test, clarifying the functional mechanism and the heterogeneity of boundary conditions between different types of research intensity and innovation performance. This paper constructs a unique dataset of clean energy and collects firm-level green innovation data that matches it with provinces and cities. Then, this paper executes quasi-natural experiments on green innovation to examine the effects of China's emission trading policy on green innovation. Further, this paper introduces the interactive terms of the pilot time and pilot area dummy variables into the spatial Durbin model (SDM) and spatial dynamic panel model (SDPM) to construct quasi-natural experiments to examine the spatial effect. The findings confirm a negative association between the 'policy treatment effect' and green innovation. The results also indicate a significant negative association between the emissions trading policy and clean energy. Besides, the empirical results reveal a positive correlation between clean energy and green innovation; clean energy promotes green innovation in the region and the surrounding areas. With China's commitment to achieving a carbon peak and carbon neutralisation by 2030 and 2060, respectively, the government's requirements for enterprises to adopt green technology are becoming increasingly urgent. We established a tripartite evolutionary game model of an enterprise, government and bank. We analysed conditions for the existence of stable points and factors affecting the choice of stakeholder's strategy. The influence of the change in each parameter on the evolutionary stable strategy was further studied. We found that the government's reward, subsidy and taxes for enterprise's green technology innovation can increase the willingness of enterprises to implement green technology innovation, and the role of taxes is greater than that of subsidies. The preferential interest rate for green innovation is conducive to stimulating enterprises to engage in green innovation, but the increase in the cost of green credit will reduce the willingness of banks to provide green credit. With the increase in the subsidy, incentives and the cost of environmental regulation, the policy burden of the government will gradually increase, thus reducing the willingness of the government to implement environmental regulation policy. Increasing agricultural productivity and reducing carbon emissions are two major challenges that China faces. This paper explores how agricultural insurance affects agricultural green total factor productivity (AGTFP) that addresses these two challenges. First, we adopt DDF-GML to measure AGTFP, and the Dagum's Gini decompositions results show the large differences in AGTFP, with transvariation between subregions contributing the most. Second, we find the U-shaped effect of agricultural insurance on AGTFP in a large country context. The result remains robust after adjusting for time, sample and estimation method of AGTFP. We also construct instrumental variables from the minimum distance from the centroid of counties within a province to the 45 ports in China and two-stage lagged agricultural insurance penetration (AIP) for AIP, and their squares as instrumental variables for AIP2. The conclusion remains robust in 2SLS model. Third, the findings confirm three channels for agricultural insurance to influence the AGTFP: environmentally friendly production, labor inputs and operation scale. To explore the functional mechanism of interest similarity in collaboration efficiency, this paper focuses on the process of technological collaboration from time and space dimensions. Specifically, I established a two-dimension model, from which the collaboration process was divided into initial and mature stages, considering time angle and was divided into intra-regional and trans-regional collaborations, considering the spatial angle. Collecting data from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the results indicate that when technicians are in the same region, the more similar their interests, the higher their collaboration efficiency. When technicians carry out trans-regional collaboration, interest similarity has a U-shaped effect on collaboration efficiency in the initial stage of collaboration. Collaboration efficiency decreases due to the distrust of similar content distribution, and with the continuous consolidation of collaboration relationships, collaboration efficiency improves. In the mature stage, interest similarity affects collaboration efficiency positively. The findings provide suggestions for technicians to choose appropriate partners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Under the background of the rapid development of innovation economy promoted by education science and technology, this paper uses the DEA Malmquist index model to build an evaluation index system based on the research object of the Education Science and technology industry of 31 provinces in China from 2010 to 2019. It makes a static analysis of its input–output efficiency from the aspects of comprehensive efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. Also, the Malmquist index method is used to analyse the changes of comprehensive efficiency, technical efficiency and technological progress. It is found that the development of the educational science and technology industry in different regions of China has its own characteristics. The efficiency of educational science and technology in some regions is good, but the growth rate slows down, and some efficiency lags behind, so there is a lot of space for improvement. On the whole, technological progress is an important factor affecting the change in total input–output efficiency. It is suggested that regional cooperation should be strengthened to optimise the allocation of educational science and technology resources. In the context of the rapid development of the digital economy, it's an important topic how to play the role of digital technology in improving innovation efficiency. Employing the spatial econometric model with province-level panel data during 2006–2018, the article explores the impact of the development of the digital economy on innovation efficiency in China. The analysis unveils three major findings. First, the innovation efficiency has significant positive spatial externalities and the digital economy has significantly positive direct effects and spatial spillover effects on innovation efficiency, but the above effects are heterogeneous for different regions and innovation subjects. Second, the impact of digital economy development on innovation efficiency has characteristics of a certain degree of lag effect and continuity. Third, the threshold effect analysis reveals the non-linear characteristic of the increasing marginal effect of the digital economy on innovation efficiency. Altogether, the development of the digital economy has become an important driving force for promoting China's innovation efficiency. The findings of this paper provide empirical evidence for understanding the relationship between the digital economy development and innovation efficiency, giving significant implications for the innovative development of developing countries. This paper analyzes the impact of internet use on entrepreneurship activities. This is based on 2014 survey data from China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The results show that internet use promotes the entrepreneurial tendency of Chinese entrepreneurs and affects their income levels. Moreover, such influences are moderated by the location of individuals; the impact is higher for the entrepreneurial tendency and income levels of rural residents than that of urban ones. In addition, this paper also finds that internet use stimulates entrepreneurship by promoting social networks. In the context of tightening resource and environmental constraints globally, it is urgent to promote enterprise's green technological innovation through environmental regulation. This paper uses the panel data of Chinese listed companies from 2009 to 2019 to empirically test the relationship between environmental regulation and green technological innovation, and it also explores the transmission mechanism of executive compensation between these two. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) environmental regulation can promote enterprise green technological innovation. (2) Environmental regulation negatively influences the enterprise green technological innovation by reducing executive compensation. (3) The effect of environmental regulation on the promotion of green technological innovation of enterprise is higher in coastal areas than inland areas of China; while the effect of environmental regulation on the promotion of green technological innovation of enterprise is higher in state-owned enterprises than others. This paper takes the China high- and new-technology enterprise (HNTE) program implemented in 2008 as a quasi-natural experiment. Difference-in-differences (DID) estimate with matching data from the China Industrial Enterprise Database, the China Customs Database and the HNTE Certification Database for 2006–2010 is used to study the impact of HNTE certification on enterprises' export product quality. The results show that, overall, HNTE certification promotes the upgrading of export product quality. Moreover, the improvement of innovation ability brought by HNTE certification is an important channel to promote such upgrades. A series of robustness tests also confirm the above conclusions. In addition, heterogeneity analyses are conducted based on the enterprise size, ownership and trade mode, respectively. The results show that the mechanism by which HNTE certification policy promotes export product quality through the improvement of enterprise innovation ability is more significant in non-SOEs and general trading enterprises. The firm survival risk is essential to intellectual property strategy implementing in China, however only a few studies focus on this problem. The paper investigates the effect of intellectual property rights protection system (IPR) on survival risk. Specifically, we use an event history analysis to track 8486 firms entering the market from the year 2000, and employ computing methods of the time-dependent Cox model. One important finding from this study is that the survival risks of R&D firms can be reduced approximately 22.57% by every additional unit of intellectual property, and the marginal effect raises to 28.33% with the exclusion of the administrative factors. Another important finding is that the relationship between IPR protection and survival risk is affected by R&D revenue. Finally, the survival risk for all those firms with substantive innovation rather than strategic innovation can be greatly affected by IPR system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper tries to disentangle between the influence of R&D subsidy and non-R&D subsidy, and explores the mechanism of different subsidies and their combination on R&D input and output of listed companies in China. It is found that both R&D subsidy and non-R&D subsidy can effectively motivate listed companies to increase R&D investment, and moderate non-R&D subsidy in subsidy combination can strengthen the 'incentive effect' of R&D subsidy on enterprise innovation. R&D subsidies can improve the innovation output of listed companies through direct and indirect 'double paths', but non-R&D subsidies have a certain 'masking effect' on the innovation output. Relevant government should control the non-R&D subsidy at the 'medium and low level' as far as possible to realise the 'strengthening effect' of moderate non-R&D subsidy on R&D subsidy in promoting enterprise innovation. Under limited technological resources, optimising financing channel to R&D investment has important theoretical and practical implications. This paper analyzed the threshold effects of internal financing channels and external financing channels on the R&D investment using 692 manufacturing listed companies' data from 2008 to 2015. And five threshold factors including the debt level, profit level, operational capacity, company's size, and bank loan ratio were used to estimate the threshold effects of different financing channels. The results show that internal financing has a positive threshold effect on R&D investment when the debt level is lower than the threshold value; equity financing is negatively related to R&D investment; debt financing has a significant negative effect on the R&D investment under certain threshold levels; government subsidies promote the R&D investment extremely for the companies with certain size and scale effect. This paper investigates how returnees' repatriation speed and irregularity affect FDI knowledge spillovers. Using a unique dataset of high-tech Chinese firms located in Zhongguancun Science Park in Beijing from 2007 to 2013, we find that returnees are vital in improving local firms' absorptive capacity and disseminating FDI externalities. Our empirical results show that returnees' high repatriation speed positively contributes to the local absorption of FDI knowledge spillovers, whereas repatriation irregularity dampens it. This research highlights the time-based attributes of returnees' repatriation as a new factor of absorptive capacity when learning from FDI knowledge. It thus provides a more integrated viewpoint on the relationship between returnees and FDI spillovers. Our findings have important implications for policymakers and practitioners. The spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on business and economies globally. This paper aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on firm performance in China's high-tech industries. The population of this paper is 116 companies listed on the sci-tech innovation board (STAR market) of the Shanghai stock exchange. DuPont analysis is applied to measure firm performance including return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), asset turnover ratio (ATO), and profit margin. The empirical results show that the COVID-19 pandemic has a significant and negative impact on ROE, ROA, and ATO in high-tech industries, and research and development (R&D) investment has a moderating role in the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and firm performance. The complex and changeable environment calls for entrepreneurs to adopt ambidextrous leadership (AL) strategies to balance the different demands within the organisation. Transformational and transactional leadership are the most widely studied leadership in the field of leadership and are regarded as an effective way to enhance enterprise technological innovation performance (ETIP) by scholars. However, previous studies have overlooked the complementary participation of these two paradoxical leadership behaviours in enterprise management as well as the influence of such complementary participation on employees' psychological distance (PD). In order to make up for these gaps, this paper uses linear regression analysis, SEM, and ANOVA to explore the influence of AL on ETIP by empirically studying 308 functional department managers in 77 high-tech enterprises in China. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) AL has a significant positive impact on ETIP. (2) The positive impact of AL on ETIP is better than that of single transformational or transactional leadership. (3) PD partially mediates the relationship between AL and ETIP. The construction and development of technology cooperation network are very important to improve the efficiency of technology R&D. Based on the cooperative patent data in the field of solid waste treatment in China, this paper analyses the structural, spatial and organisational characteristics of the technology cooperation network evolution by using the social network analysis (SNA) method. Meanwhile, the exponential random graph model (ERGM) is used to explore the driving factors of the network evolution. The present results show that the network tends to form a convergent structure and transitive structure, while the intermediary structure is not conducive to the formation of the network. The R&D capability of the entity has no obvious impact on the network evolution, but the positive impact of degree centrality is significant. The negative influence of the structural holes gradually appears in the late stage of network evolution. The geographical homophily has a long-lasting and significant positive effect on network evolution. However, the effect of organisational homophily on the network evolution gradually weakens over time. This study expands the research perspective of technology cooperation network and provides a practical reference for promoting technical cooperation in the field of solid waste treatment. Based on the improved Tapio decoupling model and geographic information system spatial analysis technology, this paper studied the spatial and temporal pattern evolution law of the decoupling relationship between innovation capability and resource consumption in 283 cities in China. The non-residual complete decomposition model was used to decompose the rebound effect of resource consumption in China's urban innovation development. We found (1) during the study period, innovation capability and resource consumption in Chinese cities showed a weak decoupling state. (2) Regions with significant decoupling showed a trend of spatial agglomeration, and the gap in the degree of urban decoupling gradually narrowed. (3) The increase in urban population growth and innovation intensity in China have a positive pull effect on resource consumption. The improvement in resource efficiency has an inhibitory effect on resource consumption, but this inhibition is less than the effect of population scale and innovation intensity on resource consumption. Under the background of the resource-based view, it is of great significance to assess the mechanism through which knowledge transfer received dimensions (tacit and explicit) affect enterprise innovation performance. Explicitly, the study proposes a moderated moderation model of entrepreneurial opportunity types (innovative and imitative) and environmental dynamism to address this mechanism. In a sample of 314 foreign subsidiaries located in China, we find that: (1) Knowledge transfer received types have a positive influence on enterprise innovation performance, (2) The positive influence is contingent on innovative opportunities, whereas no significant association exists among imitative opportunities, explicit knowledge transfer received, and enterprise innovation performance, (3) The positive effect of innovative opportunities on the knowledge transfer received dimensions-innovation performance links increases when the environmental dynamism is in high tempo. With the deepening of economic globalisation and the rapid development of the Internet, open innovation has become the main innovation paradigm for enterprises to win a competition. There are three modes of open innovation: inbound, outbound, and coupling. Among them, coupling open innovation can better meet the innovation needs of enterprises. This paper takes the survey data of 421 enterprises in 10 cities in East China as samples, and uses a neural network model to explore the relationship between coupling open innovation and innovation performance, as well as the moderating effect of open innovation platforms. The study found that for enterprises in the start-up, growing and transition stages, the proportion of inbound open innovation positively affects innovation performance; for enterprises in the mature stage, the proportion of outbound open innovation positively affects innovation performance. At the same time, there are peak points for both. The breadth of platform openness does not significantly moderate coupling open innovation and innovation performance, while the depth of platform openness has a significant moderating effect on coupling open innovation and innovation performance. By utilising policy reference network analysis and keyword timing analysis, this paper proposes a framework for measuring policy diffusion, which can delineate research focus, measurement indicators, and methods of science and technology policy diffusion from four dimensions: intensity, breadth, speed, and direction. Based on the framework, this paper collects and categorises China's policies on technology transfer and commercialisation from 1985 to 2017, and conducts quantitative research on the diffusion process and characteristics of those polices from the previously mentioned four dimensions, which enables us to investigate the diffusion law of knowledge, information, and experience among those policies. The paper can provide data support on the choice of policy type for subsequent specific policy formulation by exploring the characteristics of different types of policy diffusion. Based on the listed companies in China, this paper studies the influence of government subsidies, R&D expenditures, and enterprise innovation using the Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) model on one another and by applying Generalised Method of Moments, Impulses Response Function, and Forecast-Error Variance Decomposition, by dividing enterprise innovation into substantive innovation and strategic innovation. Furthermore, the results show that subsidies and R&D expenditures of enterprises and the impact of scale on the relationship influence each other. Government subsidies and substantive innovation influence each other, while R&D expenditures and strategic innovation influence each other. Furthermore, scale affects the relationship among variables. There is a strong interrelationship between subsidies and R&D expenditures for small-scale enterprises, and a strong interrelationship between subsidies and substantive innovation for large-scale enterprises. Innovation is an important driving force in regional sustainable development, and innovation efficiency improvements can promote regional innovation. This study uses the Hansen threshold regression model to examine innovation efficiency's impact on the ecological footprint at different economic development levels in China's provinces from 2003 to 2013. It uses the super efficiency slacks-based model to measure innovation efficiency, with night light data from the operational line-scan system employed by the defense meteorological program representing the regional economic development level. The conclusions are as follows: (1) improvements in regional innovation efficiency have an inhibitory effect on the ecological footprint, and this effect gradually weakens with increasing levels of economic development. (2) The inhibitory effect is spatially heterogeneous: it is stronger in eastern China than in central and western China. (3) Scientific and technological human resources are inhibitory at first, later promoting the ecological footprint. Scientific and technological financial and informational resources, as well as the number of scientific papers, promote the ecological footprint, but the promoting effect of financial resources is relatively smaller. An effective innovation is a significant cause of competitive advantage. The evaluation of regional green technology innovation (GTI) performance in China has gained tremendous interest. In this paper, the GTI activities are split into two components: the green technology R&D (GTR) stage and the technology achievement transformation (TAT) stage. While doing so, we consider the time lag of the GTI process and managerial disposability of the undesirable output. The combination of the network epsilon-based measure (EBM) model and meta-frontier Malmquist-Luenberger (MML) index constitutes a comprehensive analytical framework for evaluating the regional GTI performance in China. This study's empirical results indicate that: (1) China's overall average efficiency of GTI (0.817) is between the efficiency of GTR (0.725) and the efficiency of TAT (0.929); (2) the average efficiencies in the GTR stage fluctuate considerably, with average efficiencies relatively high and constant in the TAT stage; (3) technological progress is the key element which contributes to improvements in the MML index of overall and sub-process GTI; and (4) from a national perspective, the MML index of the overall GTI varies from 0.980 to 1.128 each year, with an average annual growth of 2.8%. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the impact of university-industry collaborative research with different dimensions on university patent commercialisation and offer suggestions to promote patent commercialisation. University-industry collaborative research is measured by the university-industry collaborative patent application. Collaboration breadth and depth are defined. The theories about the impacts of the collaboration breadth and depth on university patent commercialisation are analysed and the hypotheses are proposed accordingly. We explore the impacts by negative binomial regression with the panel data set constructed from the patent data of the 'double first-class' universities in China during 2015–2017. Results show that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between the collaboration breadth and the university patent commercialisation. Nevertheless, the collaboration depth has no impact on university patent commercialisation. And surprisingly, the interaction of breadth and depth shows a negative impact on it. Suggestions are offered that universities should avoid collaborating with industry inordinately and pay attention to balance breadth and depth of the collaboration with industry, improving the quality of the collaboration and promoting patent commercialisation. In the era of technological innovation, some companies own similar patent assets but capture different profits. The paper aims to explore whether and why there are different effects of patent assets on firm performance across industries. The listed corporations in the Growth Enterprises Market (GEM) of Shenzhen Stock Exchange, China, are taken as samples, which are categorised as three industries: the technology-intensive industry, capital-intensive industry, and labour-intensive industry, in light of the production factors. Moreover, the multiple stepwise regression and the fixed effects model are utilised. This paper highlights the effects of patent assets on firm performance are different across industries. Patent quality strongly influences firm performance in the technology-intensive industry, while patent count increases firm performance in the capital-intensive industry and labour-intensive industries. Notably, technological knowledge stock owned by companies plays a moderating role in influencing patent assets on firm performance in the technology-intensive industry. Our findings enrich the research on patent assets influencing financial performance from the industrial difference perspective and suggest that companies in different industries should take differentiated patent strategies to improve firm performance. Chinese listed companies recently come out a set of serious agency problems. For example, directors and controlling shareholders highly override company interests. Conventional governance methods such as introducing non-executive directors couldn't effectively solve this problem. The proposal of encouraging non-controlling major shareholders to actively participate in corporate decision-making becomes more popular nowadays. This paper studies the mechanism of non-controlling major shareholders' exit threat on corporate innovation, and explore the impact of property rights and corporate life cycles on this mechanism. The result shows the exit threat of non-controlling major shareholders did not promote corporate innovation. This is mainly because major shareholders pursue short-term benefits and tend to support financial asset investment rather than R&D investment. Our research also come out that the inhibitory effect of the exit threat of non-controlling major shareholders on corporate innovation is more significant for non-state-owned and mature enterprises in China. This article finds Chinese capital market investors pay more attention to short-term interests and lack the long-term value investment awareness, which is not conducive to the long-term development of enterprises. The Maker Space, as a new kind of incubation platform with Chinese characteristics, has developed rapidly in response to government policies. Two divergent incubation models exist in the Chinese market, but existing literature does not provide enough solid evidence regarding which model is better for start-up developments. Combined with evolutionary game theory, this paper analyzes the evolutionary stability strategy of Maker Space-start-ups-Universities & Research Institutes (MSUR) collaborative innovation behaviour and, separately, its impact factors under 'co-working' and 'co-creating' incubation model. A numerical simulation is conducted to verify evolutionary game results and the effects of impact factors on behavioural evolution. The research indicates that different managerial strategies in incubation models are vital for innovation entities' collaborative decisions and the growth of incubated start-ups. This paper argues that the high-tech enterprise certification (HTE certification) can facilitate firm performance and that this effect is mediated by external resource acquisition, including venture capital and human resource in the context of China. Using the Chinese industrial enterprise database and difference–in-difference approach, our results indicate that: (a) HTE certification is positively associated with external resource acquisition, namely, venture capital and human resource; (b) both venture capital and human resource are positively related to firm performance and (c) the external resource acquisition including venture capital and human resource mediates the relationship between HTE certification and firm performance. While numerous studies have examined the importance of technology innovation in supporting the aging society, few have been specifically conducted on the emerging technologies that forecast for the elderly. Moreover, existing related research lacks consideration of public users' demands, and the forecasting results have not been linked with the actual technology supply in the market, which may easily lead to waste of resources and deviation of R&D focus. Given that, we present a novel method to forecast and evaluate emerging technologies based on technology supply and demand (S&D) matching. In the case study of China's gerontechnology, we first systematically excavate the elderly's demands and match them with the emerging gerontechnologies. Then, we analyse technology supply to filter out S&D oversaturated technologies and screen out S&D undersaturated results by the text semantic mining and similarity matching. With the increasing emphasis of the government on the importance of Party organisations in China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs), we need to pay more attention to its role in the operation of enterprises. As the research on board of directors emphasises the central position of the chairman, this paper focuses on the top leader of the Party organisation, namely the Party Committee Secretary. Based on upper echelon theory, this paper proposes the relationship between the technology background of a Party Committee Secretary and firm's innovation efficiency, and how this relationship is moderated by position duality and environment dynamism. Using the data of China's listed SOEs which issue A-shares in Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges from 2014 to 2016 and operate in the manufacturing industry, the main effect and moderating effects are tested. We find that the existence of a Party Committee Secretary with technology background positively affects the SOE's innovation efficiency. In addition, this relationship is strengthened by environment dynamism. Our conclusions not only enrich literature about upper echelon theory and determinants of firm's innovation, but also are helpful for improving corporate governance in developing countries. The political concept of indigenous innovation in China sets out a guiding principle for the country's major transformation towards becoming an innovation nation. However, firms' innovation strategies and capabilities in middle-income countries are usually heterogeneous, making a uniform response to this concept at the company level highly unlikely. The paper's empirical contribution is based on analysing survey data on technologically advanced machinery firms in China. It uses a multinomial model approach to establish which drivers of innovation go hand-in-hand with the different innovation strategies. This paper identifies different innovation strategies and forms of innovation that co-emerge as part of this transformation, leading to four firm groups: low-cost producers, technology-oriented producers, user-oriented innovators and technology-oriented innovators. It thus contributes to a more differentiated view of the effects of China's innovation-focused transformation. This article deals with the governance and institutionalisation of Chinese makerspaces. Existing research on the governance of makerspace has proposed two governance models or 'paradigms': bottom-up commons-based peer production and top-down public policy based governance. This article is trying to explore how makerspace in China is governed by a multitude of institutional forces. By examining three maker communities, it is argued that: (1) the dominant model of governing Chinese makerspaces does not adhere to either of these two models. This paper proposed an alternative one: a 'subtle top-down' model that accounts for the dialectics between government and its governing approaches and, the involvement of various non-government actors aligning with public policy goals; (2) makerspace has become an instrument to drive China's transition from an industrial-based economy to a service economy. The proliferation of makerspaces marks the concrete step towards a Chinese contemporary modernisation route; (3) makerspace highlighted some of the attempts made by the state to address structural inequalities. Latecomer technology imitation and learning is an important driving force to enhance their competitiveness and total factor productivity (TFP). This paper constructs green TFP (GTFP) based on the SBM–Global–Luenberger index, using Chinese provincial panel data from 2003 to 2017. The marginal effects of foreign direct investment (FDI), outward foreign direct investment (OFDI), import and export, and intangible and total international technology spillovers (ITS) on GTFP were assessed. These effects were analysed under the influence of absorption capabilities such as research and development intensity, economic and financial, and openness. A spatial diffusion model based on three diffusion sources in China's first-tier cities, Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, was constructed to describe the heterogeneous impacts of ITS on GTFP under the marketisation of diffusion sources. We found: (1) ITS based on exports and OFDI promote economic, imports and FDI are relatively small, independent technological innovation is the dominant source of economic growth. (2) Considering spatial diffusion, the contribution of Beijing's ITS is relatively weak, and Shanghai's contribution is stronger. Coastal areas have the largest marginal effect of ITS on GTFP, and ITS do not attenuate as geographic distances increase. Academic spin-offs (ASOs) are three-way synergies among academic institutions, industries, and the government based on the Triple Helix model. Extant literature highlights the importance of industrial networks for spin-offs' success, yet few studies explore their networking strategies with non-commercial parties after knowledge commercialisation. Using data from 216 listed ASOs in China wherein government-push and market-pull venturing patterns simultaneously exist, this paper empirically investigates the impact that the academic and political connections of entrepreneurs have upon firms' sustainable performance. Using fixed effects estimation, the results demonstrate that academic networks still have a positive influence on the financial performance of commercialised ASOs. The effects of political networks, however, differ across ownerships. Politically connected entrepreneurs are found to strengthen firms' performance in state-owned ASOs, but they impede performance in non-state-owned ASOs wherein academic networks are shown to weaken this negative effect. Uber is a prominent example of the sharing economy and a key player in the transportation service market. In this paper, we investigate how Uber adopts a dynamic pricing system in its compensation structure design for driver rewards. A longitudinal and citywide comparison of the Uber driver reward system reveals that Uber reacts to local taxi conditions in China by creating different reward conditions in unique city environments in response to taxi possession rates. The dynamic pricing model embedded in the Uber driver reward system benefits hardworking drivers (particularly during peak periods) and those who provide a friendly and efficient service experience for passengers. In addition, we identify significant benefits introduced by Uber including significantly improvement of driver remuneration and reduction of the taxi plate subscription premium. These findings contribute evidences of the utility of dynamic pricing systems, especially in compensation structure design, as well as positive influences introduced by sharing economy in tackling taxi service market monopoly. This present paper studies the relationship between the industrial development environment (IDE) and the innovation efficiency (IE) of China’s high-tech industry. First, drawing upon insights from research on regional innovation systems and sectoral innovation systems, the paper proposes a definition of the IDE within which China’s high-tech industry exists. Then, by a factorial analysis, three main components reflecting the IDE are obtained: regional development conditions, regional consumption potential, and interactions between innovation actors. Furthermore, the impacts of various facets of the IDE on three kinds of IE are investigated through the DEA-Tobit regression approach. In this paper, we examine the match between resource relatedness and post-merger integration on technology innovation of acquiring firms to find the rationale behind technology-sourcing cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) of Chinese multinational enterprises. Using a sample of 88 Chinese technology-sourcing cross-border M&As, we find that the acquirer will improve technology innovation when greater resource similarity between the acquirer and target firms is matched with a high integration degree and a low target autonomy level. Meanwhile, the acquirer can improve technology innovation when greater resource complementarity is matched with a low level of integration degree in technology-sourcing cross-border M&As. This paper provides the acquiring firms with fresh ideas of how to make the integration decisions of technology-sourcing overseas M&As. We hope to help multinational enterprises to achieve more outstanding technology innovation performance through technology-sourcing overseas M&As in an intense global competitive environment. Based on the cooperation patent data between 31 provinces in China from 1985 to 2017, this paper portrays the topological structure, spatial pattern and proximity mechanism of China's inter-regional innovation cooperation network by the graph theory, spatial statistical methods and the quadratic assignment procedure model. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the topological structure of China's inter-regional innovation cooperation forms a hierarchical network with Beijing as the core and it exhibits a typical small-world property and 'core–periphery' structure. (2) In terms of spatial distribution characteristics, the 'quadruple' with the Beijing–Tianjin region, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Sichuan as the peaks has become the backbone of the inter-regional innovation cooperation network in China. At the same time, the spatial differentiation of the three indicators of degree centrality, median centrality and intensity centrality is obvious. (3) In terms of proximity mechanism, geographical, institutional and cognitive proximity exert a significant effect on China's inter-regional innovation cooperation network linkage. To achieve market-oriented green innovation, this paper explores the evolutionary path and driving factors of disruptive green innovation using an exploratory case study in which data are collected from the Luyuan electric bicycle company in China. The results reveal that disruptive green innovation is a dynamic and cumulative process. Entrepreneurship drives to open new markets. Competition within the industry drives to expand the new markets. Competition among industries and the subsidy policy drive to encroach on mainstream low-end markets. Technology and marketing drive to encroach on mainstream high-end markets. To scholars, our research contributes to the literature on green innovation by uncovering the application of disruptive innovation theory in the field of green innovation. Given the regionally differentiated environmental regulatory means, this paper evaluates the contribution of firms' R&D investment to economic growth with interprovincial panel data on 30 provinces in China from 2009 to 2016, which is based on the time-varying threshold model. Additionally, the coupling coordination degree model (CCDM) is used to measure the effects of technological innovation through enterprise collaboration for R&D input and investment-focused environment regulations. We then explore the inter-regional technology transfer path with different cooperation effects in areas and find: (i) The economic performance of the R&D investments of regional enterprises shows a downward trend with the strengthening of cost-focused ER while an inverted 'U'-shaped relationship that first strengthens and then weakens is presented with the strengthening of investment-focused ER. From a knowledge-based perspective, this paper highlights the need for a framework linking perceived competition of the industry and firms' strategic location choices of external knowledge search and examines whether the perceived competition increases the propensity of cluster firms to search more widely from extra-cluster knowledge sources than intra-cluster knowledge sources. Furthermore, we emphasise that cluster firms with varying degrees of tacitness in their knowledge base might respond to such competition differently when conducting external knowledge search activities. Using a sample of 310 cluster firms in the Zhejiang Province of China, we find that the cluster firm would increase the propensity for more geographic boundary-spanning search relative to local search while under the pressure of competition. Moreover, the positive relationship between perceived competition and the propensity towards geographic knowledge search is weaker when the tacitness of the cluster firm's knowledge base is higher. Despite extensive discussion about the relationship between market competition and innovation performance, the impact of market competition on the innovation efficiency of high-technology industries in a transitional economy is still unclear. The article is based on panel data of 17 subsectors of China's high-tech industry spanning the 2001–2016 period. Using stochastic the frontier analysis model, we empirically test the impact of market competition on two-stage innovation efficiency from the perspective of the industry. The results indicate that market competition and firm scale have positive and significant effects on the efficiency of two-stage innovation, the effects of industry export intensity and government intervention on R&D efficiency are negative, but the effects are different for the efficiency of the commercialisation of technology. Based on the results of the empirical analysis, this paper compares the trends and the differences between R&D efficiency and commercialisation efficiency, and then uses cluster analysis to reclassify China's high-tech industries into three categories, thus revealing the disconnect and imbalance within China's high-tech industries. In order to systematically explore the impact of rising intellectual property rights protection on the driving effects that knowledge spillover exerts on knowledge transfer performance in China's manufacturing industries, this paper constructs an improved dynamic threshold model with the level of intellectual property rights protection as a threshold variable. The results show that when the level of intellectual property rights protection crosses one of the two thresholds in turn, the driving effect first experiences a rise and then drops sharply, reflecting a significant double threshold feature; the driving effect exhibits the characteristic of spatiotemporal heterogeneity; compared with research and development (R&D) investments, R&D personnel input can more significantly enhance knowledge transfer performance. Based on the theory of sustainable marketing and time cognition, this study constructed a theoretical model among product innovation, sustainable marketing, time perspectives, and customer innovativeness. Using a sample of 290 consumers in China respond to a new energy vehicle, this paper examines the influence of firm's product innovation on customer innovativeness through the paths of sustainable marketing and time perspectives. The results showed that product innovation positively affected three dimensions of sustainable marketing, which then had different effects on present and future time perspectives. This paper focuses on how a latecomer country can bring a large (infrastructural) technological system (LTS) to a market already dominated by the entrenched systems of global technology leaders. We construct a conceptual framework, building on Hughes LTS theory (1983) and insights from social studies of technology into the specificities of infrastructural sociotechnical systems to analyse the development of China's 3rd Generation mobile telephony system. We explore the complex dynamics surrounding the distributed governance of innovation, highlighting changes in key system builders. We note the role of the state in addressing critical problems ('reverse salients'), both in terms of aligning players through legitimating and sense-making and also, building the necessary mass and momentum. Combining insights from knowledge-based theory (KBT) and the product innovation literature, this paper explores whether and how knowledge integration methods contribute to high-tech new venture performance in China's emerging economy. Using data from 295 entrepreneurs and top executives in Chinese high-tech new ventures, we find that both the coordinated integration of knowledge and systemic integration of knowledge have positive effects on high-tech new venture performance and product innovation. Competitive intensity moderates the impact of knowledge integration methods on product innovation. Moreover, product innovation is a mediator in the relationship between knowledge integration methods and high-tech new venture performance. Talent programmes are treated as a strategic foundation for social–economic development in China. With increasing levels of funding for basic research, talent programmes in basic research are becoming more complex. This increased complexity leads to inefficiencies because it is difficult to coordinate and manage these talent programmes effectively. This paper reports a survey of talent programmes in basic research in China. The results show that talent programmes in basic research have not yet formed an integrated system and that there exist some weaknesses in integration, structure, hierarchy and chronological order. Based on these conclusions, this paper proposes a framework for the talent programme system in basic research using system theory. Furthermore, measures to address weaknesses in the existing talent programme system are provided and analysed according to China's national talent strategy. This paper uses an in-depth case study approach to compare and analyze e-business microcredit firms and traditional bank business models in China, employing a business model template redefined as an analytical tool. The results suggest that the EMF business model has typical disruptive innovation characteristics, shedding new light on the definition and criteria of disruptive business model innovation as little research has done on its systematic analysis.
