Aim. This paper is a report of a study exploring and comparing the experience of men and women with colorectal cancer at diagnosis and during surgery. Background. Men have higher incidence and mortality rates for nearly all cancers and frequently use health behaviours that reflect their masculinity. There has been minimal investigation into the influence of gender on the experience of a 'shared' cancer. Methods. From November 2006 to November 2008, a qualitative study was conducted involving 38 individuals (24 men, 14 women) with colorectal cancer. Data were generated using semi-structured interviews at four time points over an 18-month period. This paper reports the participants' experience at diagnosis and during surgery (time point 1) with the purpose of examining the impact of gender on this experience. Findings. In general, men appeared more accepting of their diagnosis. The majority of females seemed more emotional and more affected by the physical side effects. However, there was variation in both gender groups, with some men and women portraying both 'masculine' and 'feminine' traits. There was also individual variation in relation to context. Conclusions. It appears that many men may have been experiencing side effects and/or psychological distress that they were reluctant to discuss, particularly as some men portrayed typical 'masculine' traits in public, but felt able to open up in private. Nurses should not make assumptions based on the traditional view of masculinity, and should determine how each man wants to deal with their diagnosis and not presume that all men need to 'open up' about their illness. Aim: To explore young adults' experiences of living with type 1 diabetes in the transition to adulthood, including experiences of the transfer from paediatric to adult care. Design: A qualitative approach was used. Method: Ten young adults, six women and four men, aged 19–29 years, participated. Participants were recruited at their regular diabetes clinic from spring 2021 to spring 2022. Semi‐structured interviews were transcribed and analysed using qualitative content analysis. Findings: Dreaming of being nurtured towards self‐reliance was the overarching theme. Personal experiences of the transition to adulthood, including the transfer from paediatric to adult care, were described in terms of struggling to find balance in daily life, dealing with feelings of being different, being gradually supported to achieve independence, and wishing to be approached as a unique person in healthcare. Conclusion: In healthcare, it is important to emphasize not only diabetes‐related factors but also emotional and psychosocial aspects of life connected to the transition to adulthood, including the transfer to adult care. The young adults wished to be seen as unique persons in healthcare during their emerging adulthood and should therefore be supported to achieve self‐reliance through personal preparations for new challenges and for the consequences of transitioning to adulthood. Specialist nurses can provide appropriate knowledge and leadership. Implications for the Profession: These findings can guide nurse specialists in support for emerging adults to achieve self‐reliance and indicate the importance of person‐centred care when experiencing transition and transfer. saarnio l., arman m. & ekstrand p. (2012) Power relations in patient′s experiences of suffering during treatment for cancer. Journal of Advanced Nursing 68(2), 271-279. Abstract Aim. This paper is a report of how patients who have cancer experience suffering in the context of power relations. Background. Many studies in Sweden and in other countries have detected inequality in healthcare use and resources, including unseen influences that can be connected to gender and distribution of resources. Few studies have examined how multiple relations of power - such as gender, ethnicity, age and education - influence how people with cancer experience suffering during treatment. Method. A hermeneutic design was used. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 12 women and 14 men receiving treatment for a variety of cancer diagnoses. The data collection was done at two hospitals in Sweden during 2008-2009. The interpretation of data was based on two theoretical perspectives - suffering and intersectionality. Results. The results highlight patients suffering where two or more positions of power relations interacted with each other. Three main themes were identified: the complexity of control, the vulnerable effects of body changes, and the internal battle of survival. Conclusion. A vulnerable social situation for people with cancer concretely increased their suffering. Social inequalities, seemingly linked to social hierarchy, increased the suffering of people with cancer. sanders c., carter b. & goodacre l. (2011) Searching for harmony: parents' narratives about their child's genital ambiguity and reconstructive genital surgeries in childhood. Journal of Advanced Nursing 67(9), 2220-2230. Abstract Aim. This paper is a report of a narrative study of parents' experiences of their child's genital ambiguity and the place reconstructive surgeries have in their lives. Background. Increasingly, the use of early reconstructive genital surgery has come under criticism. Few studies have explored parents' inclusion in the surgical decision-making process, their experiences of their child's surgeries or of parenting a child born with ambiguous genitalia. Method. Narrative interviews about parents' experiences of having and caring for a child of uncertain gender and their rationale for reconstructive surgeries were conducted with 15 parents between October 2004 and February 2006. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed in a narrative analysis framework. Results. Narrative analysis resulted in three increasingly contextual and conceptual levels of stories. Connections between stories gave the basis for the synthesis of the data; interpretation identified three elements of shock, protection and anxiety, which influenced the parents. The parents identified the need for early and ongoing support from healthcare professionals. The parents expected professionals to be knowledgeable about the dilemmas surround disorders of sex development and have experience in managing care for themselves and their child. Conclusion. For the parents seeking a sense of harmony between their child's genital ambiguity and gender during childhood was important. Searching for this harmony became a dynamic and evolving process, which was built on their knowledge and increasing willingness to engage with professionals, negotiate their social worlds, emotional responses and belief systems. Aim. This paper is a report of a study of the choices patients make when offered home-based or hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation. Background. In some countries, patients may be offered a choice of home-based or hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation. While evaluating a home-based programme, Road to Recovery, developed by the British Heart Foundation, we examined patients' experiences of being offered this choice. Methods. Interviews were conducted with 35 patients and 12 staff members delivering the pilot programme in five rehabilitation services during 2006-2008. Findings. While the staff members interviewed reported that all patients were given a clear choice between a home-based and hospital-based or community-based programme, this choice was less clear-cut in the patient interviews. When choice was offered, the choice of a home-based programme was often based on constraints rather than on being a positive choice. Obstacles patients faced in making the choice included lack of information on which to base a choice; inadequate systems of referral; insufficient appropriately trained staff; restricted choice of times to attend the hospital programmes; the geographical location of services and restrictive socio-economic factors (inflexible working hours, access to transport). Conclusion. The possibility of informed choice relies in the first instance on the availability and accessibility of appropriate services. Nurses need awareness and commitment to finding out about and overcoming obstacles that impede patient participation in cardiac rehabilitation. Only in this manner will it be possible to fulfil the calls in national and some international clinical guidelines for 'individualized' or 'menu-based' programmes tailored to specific patient needs. kwong e.w.-y., pang s.m.-c., choi p.-p. & wong t.k.-s. (2010) Influenza vaccine preference and uptake among older people in nine countries. Journal of Advanced Nursing 66(10), 2297–2308. Aim. This paper is a report of a study delineating factors that influence older people’s preferences and uptake of the influenza vaccine in nine countries. Background. Vaccination uptake for the aging population in many countries still remains below the World Health Organization recommended rate. Older people who perceive higher susceptibility to and severity of influenza, and more benefits from vaccination and action cues prompting vaccination, tend to accept the vaccine, but those with more perceived barriers to vaccination are less likely to accept it. Method. A total of 208 older people from China, Indonesia, Turkey, Korea, Greece, Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Nigeria were recruited to 14 vaccinated and 12 unvaccinated focus groups. They shared their experiences of influenza, and influenza vaccination, and promotion of influenza vaccination in focus groups. The data were collected in 2007. Findings. We identified five themes and generated a hypothetical framework for in-depth understanding of vaccination behaviour among older people. Participants’ vaccine preferences were determined by their behavioural beliefs in vaccination, which were based on their probability calculation of susceptibility to and severity of influenza and vaccine effectiveness, and their utility calculation of vaccine, healthcare and social costs. Action cues prompting vaccination and vaccine access further affected the vaccine uptake of participants with vaccine preferences. Vaccination coverage was likely to be higher in the countries where normative beliefs in favour of vaccination had formed. Conclusion. The hypothetical framework can be used to guide healthcare providers in developing strategies to foster normative beliefs of older people in vaccination, provide effective action cues and promote vaccine access. Aims: To explore the experiences of healthcare personnel when they face resistiveness to care in people living with dementia in nursing homes. Design: The study has a qualitative explorative design. Methods: Three focus group interviews were conducted in June 2019. A total of 16 nurses and other healthcare personnel employed in three different nursing homes participated. A semi‐structured interview guide was used during the focus group interviews. Data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using an inductive qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis generated one overarching category—'Tension when facing resistiveness to care', which describes the discomfort healthcare personnel experienced when confronted with resistiveness to care in people with dementia—and two other categories: 'Attitude change' and 'Changing behaviour', which describes their strategies to reduce and/or manage the discomfort. Four subcategories—'Changing the mindset', Conceptual shift', Stepping back' and 'Not giving up'—described the actions taken by healthcare personnel to manage or reduce their cognitive dissonance. Conclusion: The strategies used to manage or reduce cognitive dissonance provide a new understanding of how healthcare personnel choose to approach resistiveness to care in people living with dementia. Impact: This study addresses cognitive dissonance, a discomfort experienced by healthcare personnel when facing resistiveness to care from people living with dementia. To reduce their dissonance, the participants employed several strategies, including coercive measures, when providing care. Aim To explore the perceptions of key stakeholders of the roles of specialist and advanced nursing and midwifery practitioners. Background There is evidence that the contribution of these roles to patient care is poorly understood. Design This research took place over 2 months in 2015 and is part of a larger study involving a rapid review to inform policy development on the specialist and advanced nursing and midwifery practice in Ireland. As an added value, a qualitative element involving thematic analysis was undertaken with key stakeholders. Methods A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted incorporating semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders ( n = 15). Purposive sampling with maximum diversity was used to recruit a wide range of perspectives. Findings Participant's perspectives led to seven themes: Impact of these roles; role preparation, experience and organizational support; specialist and advanced practice roles in an interdisciplinary context; different folks but not such different roles; impact of specialist and advanced practice roles on patient outcomes; barriers and facilitators to enacting specialist and advanced practice roles; future development of these roles. Conclusion There is acknowledgement of the positive impact of specialist and advanced practitioners; however, the evidence is currently not conclusive. Preparation for these roles needs to reflect changes in the calibre of today's professional applicants, and organizational support is paramount to their successful execution. The contribution of their activity to patient outcome needs to be made visible to enhance these roles and to justify the development of new roles across a variety of healthcare areas. Aims To explore the impact of the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome on health/ill health identity, how women experience this diagnosis and their health beliefs. Background Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common and heterogeneous condition, giving rise to a wide range of different health concerns. Previous research on polycystic ovary syndrome has been dominated by the medical perspective and less is known about the experiences and needs of women. Design A qualitative study of 32 premenopausal adult women with polycystic ovary syndrome (diagnosis confirmed by Rotterdam criteria), aged between 18 and 45 years, recruited from a primary and secondary care setting. Methods Thematic analysis of transcripts from 11 focus groups conducted between 2013-2015. Results/Findings Women identified a range of concerns affecting personal and reproductive identity, health knowledge and beliefs: (1) delays and barriers to diagnosis; (2) general lack of empathy by the medical profession; (3) difficulty in accessing specialist referral; (4) lack of information from professionals; (5) inconsistent and sometimes unsatisfactory experiences with medications; (6) insufficient help and advice regarding in/fertility; (7) relative lack of awareness or concern about longer term risks such as diabetes; and (8) significant discrepancies between the beliefs of women with polycystic ovary syndrome and how they experienced the attitudes of healthcare professionals. Conclusions There appears to be a divergence between women's experience and attitudes of healthcare professionals. The diagnosis, support and lived experience of women with polycystic ovary syndrome could be enhanced by better professional recognition of these concerns, improved knowledge and communication about polycystic ovary syndrome and better access to support and specialist advice. Aim To present the qualitative findings from a study on the development of scheme(s) to give evidence of maintenance of professional competence for nurses and midwives. Background Key issues in maintenance of professional competence include notions of self- assessment, verification of engagement and practice hours, provision of an evidential record, the role of the employer and articulation of possible consequences for non-adherence with the requirements. Schemes to demonstrate the maintenance of professional competence have application to nurses, midwives and regulatory bodies and healthcare employers worldwide. Design A mixed methods approach was used. This included an online survey of nurses and midwives and focus groups with nurses and midwives and other key stakeholders. The qualitative data are reported in this study. Methods Focus groups were conducted among a purposive sample of nurses, midwives and key stakeholders from January-May 2015. A total of 13 focus groups with 91 participants contributed to the study. Findings Four major themes were identified: Definitions and Characteristics of Competence; Continuing Professional Development and Demonstrating Competence; Assessment of Competence; The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and employers as regulators and enablers of maintaining professional competence. Conclusion Competence incorporates knowledge, skills, attitudes, professionalism, application of evidence and translating learning into practice. It is specific to the nurse's/midwife's role, organizational needs, patient's needs and the individual nurse's/midwife's learning needs. Competencies develop over time and change as nurses and midwives work in different practice areas. Thus, role-specific competence is linked to recent engagement in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims To critically examine the representation of ageing identities in popular music texts. Background Having a positive outlook provides both short-term benefits and has been proven to help people live longer. Music is capable of conveying positive and negative emotion towards ageing, however, only a limited number of unpublished studies exist on how age and ageing is represented in popular music. Design Qualitative discourse analysis. Methods In July 2014, a search without time limits was completed of the music lyrics databases, The Music Lyric Database, Songfacts, The Macronium and Absolute lyrics for English language music texts relating to age and ageing. Results Findings revealed ( N = 76) relevant music texts offering up negative and positive discourses of age and ageing, with negative predominating. Identities of age and ageing were categorized as 'contented and celebrated aged', 'pitiful and petulant pensioners' and 'frail and flagging old folks'. Conclusion From this study, it is evident that mainly negative representations of age and ageing are available in popular music texts. It is imagined that the negative representations of age and ageing can be dispiriting, confidence and esteem lowering for older people and their potential impact might be considered carefully by artists. However, while evidence exists that negative and positive emotions can influence health and well-being, further qualitative research is needed to explore what impact precisely the negative texts have on those experiencing ageing. Aims To examine frontline staff acceptance of telehealth and identify barriers to and enablers of successful adoption of remote monitoring for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Chronic Heart Failure. Background The use of telehealth in the UK has not developed at the pace and scale anticipated by policy. Many existing studies report frontline staff acceptance as a key barrier, however data are limited and there is little evidence of the adoption of telehealth in routine practice. Design Case studies of four community health services in England that use telehealth to monitor patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Chronic Heart Failure. Methods Thematic analysis of qualitative interviews with 84 nursing and other frontline staff; and 21 managers and key stakeholders; data collected May 2012-June 2013. Findings Staff attitudes ranged from resistance to enthusiasm, with varied opinions about the motives for investing in telehealth and the potential impact on nursing roles. Having reliable and flexible technology and dedicated resources for telehealth work were identified as essential in helping to overcome early barriers to acceptance, along with appropriate staff training and a partnership approach to implementation. Early successes were also important, encouraging staff to use telehealth and facilitating clinical learning and increased adoption. Conclusions The mainstreaming of telehealth hinges on clinical 'buy-in'. Where barriers to successful implementation exist, clinicians can lose faith in using technology to perform tasks traditionally delivered in person. Addressing barriers is therefore crucial if clinicians are to adopt telehealth into routine practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim The aim of this study was to explore the ways that mothers' groups and playgroups support families with children aged 0-5 years and foster community connectedness in newer residential communities in Perth, Western Australia. Background The transition to parenthood is a time of increased support need. Changing community demography has resulted in a loss of traditional support structures and an increased need for local community initiatives to support families with young children. Design A qualitative descriptive design was used for this initial phase of a mixed methods sequential exploratory study. Method Data were collected between December 2011-August 2012. Interviews and focus groups conducted with 39 mothers provided insights from 16 mothers' groups and 13 playgroups. In addition, interviews were undertaken with three child health nurses and four local government early childhood staff. Findings For the participants in this study, mothers' groups and playgroups provided opportunities to learn about parenting, to build a supportive network, to forge friendships and a connectedness to the local community. The families who relocated often experienced isolation until new groups and social networks were found. In general, where participation in mothers' groups and playgroups facilitated relationships with others from the local community, connectedness to that community was reported by participants to be enhanced. Conclusion Mothers' groups and playgroups provide important community development opportunities and appear to help reduce potential isolation for mothers with young children. Aim To understand the knowledge and perceptions of type 2 diabetes and to explore preferable educational strategies in the non-diabetic offspring of patients with the disease. Background Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly prevalent disease with significant long-term consequences. Offspring of patients with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing the disease compared with the general population. Previous studies have shown that offspring have a poor perception of their own risk. Design A qualitative study was carried out using semi-structured one-to-one interviews. Analysis was completed using a structured framework approach. Methods Research was carried out during January-March 2011 in the north east of UK. Six offspring of patients diagnosed with the disease were interviewed. Results Participants balanced positive and negative aspects of their lifestyle behaviours to estimate their own risk. They had adequate knowledge of healthy lifestyle behaviours, but were uncertain about the long-term effects and seriousness of the disease and the role of inheritance. Behavioural changes at an individual level would only be motivated by an event, which would impact on their own health. Participants believed that 'fear'-based strategies to health promotion would be most effective to encourage behaviour change. Conclusion Knowledge of individual risk and why diabetes was serious was limited and variable. The health behaviours of this at-risk group were complex. Nurses engaged in the care of at-risk individuals must take this complexity into account when developing and implementing multi-faceted strategies to improve awareness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims To explore nursing students' perceptions of how their profession is portrayed on medical television programmes. Background Recruitment and retention in nursing have been linked to the image of the profession in society. Images of nursing in popular media frequently draw on stereotypes that may damage the appeal of nursing for potential students and denigrate the value and status of the profession. A growing body of work analyses how nursing is portrayed in popular media, but less research asks nursing students themselves to reflect on this area. Design Convergent parallel mixed methods. Methods Data were collected in 2011 from surveys of 484 undergraduate nursing students at a large university in New South Wales, Australia, that included demographic data, their viewing habits of medical television programmes and their opinions of how the shows handled nursing ethics and professionalism and the image of nursing on television and nursing role models. Results Most students watch medical television programmes. Students who do not speak English at home watched fewer programmes but were more positive about the depictions of professionalism. The qualitative data showed students were concerned that television can have a negative influence on the image of nursing, but they also recognized some educational and recruitment value in television programmes. Conclusions It is important for nurses, educators and students to be critically engaged with the image of their profession in society. Aim To explore how families with children at home managed 4-12 months after an adult family member was discharged from the hospital to home following bone marrow or blood cell transplantation. Background Studies of these families have been limited in number. The Family Management Style Framework offers a conceptual framework relevant to families with children who have an adult member who has undergone a bone marrow or blood cell transplant. Design This was a descriptive, qualitative, one-point-in-time study. Method Content analysis in relation to the three conceptual components of the Family Management Style Framework was employed; inductive thematic analysis determined the emergent conceptual dimensions present in the data. The sample was composed of 29 participants: 15 transplant recipients and 14 significant others who met the study criteria in 2008 and 2009. Each patient and his or her significant other were interviewed; the audio-recorded interviews were analysed after transcription. Findings The three conceptual components of the Family Management Style Framework: (1) definition of the situation; (2) management behaviours; and (3) perceived consequences , were validated as relevant for this sample across all participants. New conceptual dimensions were also present, inclusive of recovery view, support base, financial picture, management domains, perceived consequences to the whole family, and perceived consequences to the dyad relationships. Conclusion There are several overarching findings in this study, notably that recovery at home is a family experience. Aim To explore if young people with higher and lower levels of metabolic control of type 1 diabetes have different perceptions about their lives and illness. Background Adolescence through emerging adulthood is a developmental stage made more challenging when the person has type 1 diabetes. Little research has investigated if individuals with high and low levels of metabolic control in this age group perceive their disease differently. Design Qualitative descriptive. Methods In this study, 14 participants, ages 11-22 years were interviewed in 2008 about their perceptions of living with type 1 diabetes. Through a process of induction, major themes were identified. Results/findings Participants with high and low metabolic control levels reported similar themes related to reactions of others, knowledge about type 1 diabetes, and believed healthcare providers used authoritarian interactions. However, high metabolic control level participants believed type 1 diabetes would be cured; had negative initial responses to being diagnosed; rarely received parental support in managing their diabetes; and were negligent in self-care activities. Participants with low metabolic control levels did not believe a cure was imminent or have negative responses to being diagnosed; received parental support in managing diabetes; and were diligent in self-care activities. Conclusion Nurses should give information to young people with type 1 diabetes beyond initial diagnosis and help and support this age group learn appropriate ways to manage their disease, develop positive relationships with healthcare professionals, and participate in interactions with others their age successfully managing type 1 diabetes. The aim of this article is to report research findings describing phenomenological shifts, that is, changes in patterns of lived experience, for healthcare professionals who attended a performance of a research-based drama, called I'm Still Here. Background. The research drama, based on six studies, was created to help change the ways persons understand, think about and relate with persons living with dementia. Methods. In 2006-2007, 50 healthcare professionals from various disciplines and eight nursing students participated in this study. Participants were recruited from four Canadian cities in the province of Ontario where focus groups were held before and after engaging in a live performance of I'm Still Here. Findings. Analysis of focus group transcripts showed shifts in patterns of lived experience for the healthcare professional participants as evident in the participants' descriptions. The phenomenological shifts reflected a move from descriptions of 'diminishing humanness to discerning humanness', from 'disengaged care/mundane relating to reflexive relating in the now', and 'terrifying portrayals of loss to awakening to hopeful possibility'. The shifts described herein are supported with examples from the focus group transcripts. Conclusions. Findings reveal the power of drama as a vibrant and meaningful means of shifting understandings, images and intended actions of healthcare professions which have the potential to affect the lived experiences, relationships and quality of life of persons with dementia. Abstract Aim. This study explores the experience of hope for patients and staff in the context of a British stroke unit. Background. Hope is identified as a useful concept for exploring how people find meaning in recovery from illness. Uncovering the experience of hope in acute stroke care has provided evidence that can be used to facilitate rehabilitation. Methods. The methodology drew on the principles of ethnography, undertaking unstructured qualitative interviews with ten patients, ten multidisciplinary staff and 21 hours of participant observation including informal discussions with staff and patients. Data collection took place between November 2007 and November 2008. Findings. Four themes were identified: suffering, struggling with no hope and despair, hope for recovery and realistic hopefulness. Hope was experienced in the context of suffering a stroke demonstrated as loss of function, loss of mental capacity and dependency. Patients struggled to maintain a sense of hopefulness while feeling close to a slippery slope towards despair and death. Hope was expressed as a strong desire to recover, get back to normal and a time to reflect on their lives so far. Staff identified realistic hopefulness as focused on keeping things real while balancing giving hope and avoiding false hope. Conclusion. Hope is placed within the emotional challenges of suffering and struggle inherent in recovery from stroke. The staff work with patients' hopes but offer realistic hopefulness as a practical strategy for recovery. Further interventions are required for working with feelings of despair or no hope. baker j. (2011) Multi-disciplinary perceptions of patient group directions as a replacement for the pro re nata prescribing of antipsychotic medications in acute mental health settings. Journal of Advanced Nursing 67(9), 2191-2199. Abstract Background. Patient group directions have been used in the NHS for 10 years. Despite high levels of reported use, few studies have examined staff perceptions or evaluated them in practice. In mental health services, pro re nata prescriptions continue to contribute to high doses and polypharmacy of antipsychotics. Replacing pro re nata with patient group directions might improve the quality and safety of care associated with this practice. Aims. This study aimed to explore the acceptability of patient group directions in acute mental health services. Method. Qualitative methods were used. Data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Twenty-six members of the multi-disciplinary team (doctors, nurses and pharmacists) participated in either focus groups or individual interviews in 2009. Results. A broad range of benefits were suggested, including improved safety and access to treatments, and the professional development of nurses. However, concerns also emerged about the need for a culture shift in thinking, and the danger of multiple systems for the supply of medicines. Conclusion. Despite the widespread use of patient group directions in clinical settings in the last 10 years, limited research has examined their development and potential. This article is a report of a study on how participation in photo groups influenced the perception of the impact of sickness on daily life. Background. Living with severe mental illness can have a strong impact on daily life and the experience of self. In combination with self-stigmatization, this can lead to a sense of being no more than a patient. Method. A mixed-methods design was used to measure the perception of sickness impact. Consumers of psychiatric services participated in photography groups that aimed at integration of illness and developing new goals in life. These groups were conducted by nurses and data were collected between the years 2005 and 2009. The Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) questionnaires were completed by the respondents before and after intervention. The SIP was used to differentiate between respondents who perceived less impact of illness on their daily lives after following a photogroup and those who did not perceive so or remained the same. A sample of these three groups was used to complement the quantitative findings with in-depth interviews with consumers and mentor nurses. Results. Findings indicated absence of important changes in the sickness impact scores except in the domain of mobility. Consumers did, however, show signs of progress in terms of increasing openness, understanding of their feelings and situation and abilities to cope with them. Conclusion. Participating in photo groups can help patients get along with their life and make it more bearable. No signs of demoralization and self-stigmatization were found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines a study on the stress experienced by a primary family caregiver of a living-related liver transplant patient after the operation. Such study revealed that the stress of primary caregivers is relevant to the gap between expectations and primary care-giving experiences. The study identified various factors that cause caregiver stress including unstable sentiment on liver transplantation, distance from the healthcare professional, and concern on the protector role function.
