Acquiring information about one's child's cancer diagnosis is a complex and ever-changing process, and parents' needs change over time. As yet, we know little about what information parents require at different stages of their child's illness. This paper is part of a larger randomized control trial studying the parent-centered information given to mothers and fathers. The aim of this paper was to describe the topics addressed in person-centered meetings between nurses and parents of children with cancer and how those changed over time. Using qualitative content analysis, we analyzed nurses' written summaries of 56 meetings with 16 parents and then computed for each topic the percentage of parents who brought it up at any time during the intervention. The main categories were Child's disease and treatment (addressed by 100% of parents), Consequences of treatment (88%), Emotional management for the child (75%), Emotional management for the parent (100%), Social life of the child (63%), and Social life of the parent (100%). Different topics were addressed at different points in time, and fathers raised more concerns about the child's emotional management and the consequences of treatment than mothers. This paper suggests that parental information demands change over time and differ between fathers and mothers, implying that information should be person-centered. A growing body of conceptual evidence over the last decade has increased our understanding of parents' experiences of having an infant with complex congenital heart disease. These concepts include parents' feelings of uncertainty, fear, excitement, and mastery. However, little is known about parents' experiences, confidence, and knowledge acquisition during transition from hospital to home with their infant after the first stage of complex cardiac surgery. A theoretical framework to assess, plan and implement child and family centered care would assist children's cardiac nurses responsible for parental education, discharge planning and coordination. To explore parents' experiences of the transition from hospital to home with their infant, following the first stage of cardiac surgery. A prospective mixed methods longitudinal design. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken, including administration of the Maternal Confidence Questionnaire at four timepoints: before discharge following stage one cardiac surgery (T0), 2 weeks' post discharge (T1), 8 weeks' post discharge (T2) and after stage two surgery (T3). Qualitative data were thematically analyzed. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the sample and non-parametric repeated measures analysis of variance was used to analyze changes over time in maternal confidence scores. Sixteen parents of 12 infants participated. Four "patterns of transition experience" emerged, the fourth "Mastery", is discussed in this paper. Mastery can be contextualized in terms of the parents' journeys of knowledge construction, gaining confidence and reflection. Learning was dynamic and transformational, but successful learning and acquisition of knowledge was also dependent upon the parents' ability to absorb, integrate and adjust at any given time. Confidence at T0 was significantly lower than at T1 (p =.011), T2 (p =.018) and T3 (p =.012). There were no significant differences between scores at T1, T2 and T3. Liminality, as a concept, described the between and betwixt time that parents experienced as they were preparing for discharge from hospital; excitement to be going home balanced with the fear of being alone and confidence in looking after their fragile infant. Parents of infants with complex congenital heart disease obtain knowledge, confidence, and mastery dependent upon their transition experience and their personal journey through pre-liminal, liminal, and post-liminal phases of discharge from hospital to home. A conceptual framework "Parenting through Transitions – hospital to home" emerged that could assist in structuring assessment of parents' knowledge and support needs within a coordinated discharge process. Identifying individualized support would promote adaptation and adjustment during transition from the pre to post liminal phase, following their infant's first stage of complex cardiac surgery. Parents learning was dynamic and transformational, learning opportunities overlapped transitional phases of their infant's journey, but successful learning and acquisition of knowledge was also dependent upon the parents' ability to absorb, integrate and adjust at any given time. The transition from hospital to home and traversing the physical boundary of leaving the hospital for the first time with their infant (liminal phase), was loaded with emotionally traumatic experiences that could not be separated from the transition that was being explored within this study. Adjusting to the new situation, developing confidence over time, and becoming comfortable as they mastered new skills, demonstrated that some of these parents could pass through that liminal space to mastery of a new normal (post-liminal phase), which encompassed competence, integration, and comfort. Blood sampling from a peripheral vein in children can be significant. Pediatric nurses should be able to use the techniques which decrease the pain and fear duration of the blood sampling. This research studied the effect of vibration bee and whistling (concentrate on breathing) blood sampling on pain and fear in the children's emergency. In this randomized clinical trial study, 120 children ages 3–6 years referred to a pediatric ward in Najaf, Iraq, using Random Blocking Method, were divided into three groups; vibration bee, whistling, and control group. A musical vibration bee, with the cold bag attached to it, was closed for 5 minutes at approximately 5-10 cm above the blood sampling site. A final minute, the vibration was applied; then, the procedure was done. The pain severity was measured by Wong Baker Faces scale. Data were analyzed by SPSS19 software at the significant level of 95%. There was a significant difference in pain intensity between the control groups and the intervention groups (p =.000). Moreover, there was a significant difference in children's medical fear scale between the control groups and the intervention groups (p =.000). Whistling (concentrate on breathing) may be an easily accessed, inexpensive, and effective technique to control or reduce pain and fear in young children. But, vibration bee with cold has a greater effect for reducing pain and fear. It is suggested to use vibration bee (with cold) in painful aggressive procedures in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated parent-reported barriers and enablers to establishing sun safety practices with young children (0–4 years; N = 423) living in Australia. An online survey examined parent/child adherence to recommended sun safety practices and barriers and enablers to establishing sun safety practices. Adherence to different sun safety practices varied across age groups. Lack of child cooperation was the most commonly-endorsed barrier while child compliance was the most commonly-endorsed facilitator. Young children's lack of cooperation with sun safety practices represents a major obstacle for parents. In conclusion, the development and testing of family-based intervention approaches to reduce child resistance and promote cooperation is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the research were to describe eHealth literacy and identify factors affecting the eHealth literacy of early adolescents. This descriptive and correlational study was conducted in a government secondary school in the west of Turkey. The research sample consisted of 1347 adolescents in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades in the academic year 2016–2017. An adolescents' description form and the eHealth Literacy Scale (eHEALS) were used to collect the data. The mean score on eHEALS was 23.81 ± 6.94. Multiple regression analysis showed that being in the 11–12 year age group (β = 0.528, p < 0.001), having a father with a high school or university level education (β = 0.055, p = 0.038), and carrying out research in the internet on health related topics (β = 0.118, p < 0.001) were determinant at 32% (F = 56.901, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.32) on the adolescents' eHealth literacy. The mean eHEALS score in the study demonstrated that the e-health literacy of the adolescents was rather low and inadequate, and that there were gaps in the adolescents' knowledge and skills about how and where to find quality eHealth information. Nurses are expected to provide eHealth literacy training that will help to find information on the internet and interpret and assess it, and this will develop eHealth literacy of adolescents. Integrating online health information sources into the school health education curriculum in line with developed strategies can be suggested because it is an attempt to improve the eHealth literacy of adolescents. Living with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) significantly impacts every part of a person's life as optimal glycemic control requires frequent monitoring of blood glucose and the use of complex dose calculations and insulin delivery systems. The intensity of effective diabetes care is particularly challenging during the period of adolescence as adolescents must navigate diabetes management in conjunction with significant physical, cognitive, and psychosocial growth. The task of balancing the typical changes of adolescents alongside diabetes management can have significant negative impacts on an adolescent's quality of life. Quality of life, or an individual's view of their overall well-being, can be used as a psychological indicator of health adaptation in diabetic youth. The study seeks to examine the link between diabetes self-efficacy and perceived quality of life in adolescents living with T1D. While no statistically significant links were found in the pilot study, it is apparent that adolescents with T1D often feel different than their peers. Opportunities for youth with T1D to engage in camps with other diabetic youth is critical for adolescents in order to promote the development of self-identity and self-efficacy that includes effective diabetes management. Adolescent obesity continues to be a serious concern around the world, placing young people at risk for chronic conditions and early death. Research has shown that social relationships are important in making health behavior changes, such as following health-care recommendations for eating and physical activity. Specifically, the trust of health-care providers has been shown to be important in making health behavior change. Evidence suggests that obese young adults are less trusting of health-care providers than their healthy weight peers, but it is not known if this also applies to obese adolescents. The purpose of this secondary analysis study was to determine relationships between the trust of health-care providers and body mass index percentile in adolescents. Participants were 224 adolescents aged 14–19 years attending a public high school in the Midwestern United States. The Wake Forest Physician Trust scale measured the trust of health-care providers. Height and weight were collected at a school screening; body mass index percentile categories were determined according to age- and sex-adjusted body mass index percentiles. One-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey tests showed trust scores varied significantly between body mass index percentile categories of girls. Results suggest it may be necessary for health-care providers to make additional efforts to build trust with obese adolescent girls than with other groups of adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Asthma is a leading cause of acute health care use (AHCU) as defined by hospitalization and emergency department visits (ED). Little was known about factors associated with asthma-related AHCU. This study aimed to identify factors determining AHCU in children and adolescents with asthma. A descriptive study was conducted among children with mild to severe asthma referred to the pediatric outpatient clinic of "Farhat Hached" University Hospital of Sousse (Tunisia) over a period of three months (April-June 2018). We collected data regarding clinical information, the number of hospitalizations and ED visits related to asthma in the past 12 months, asthma management behaviors, and quality of life of children. Multivariable logistic regression was performed using SPSS (20.0). A total of 90 children have participated in the study. The percentage of children aged 7 to 11 years was higher than the percentage of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years (67.8%; 32.2%, respectively). The final logistic regression model demonstrated that asthma severity and inhaler technique increased the odds of AHCU (OR a = 4.6; 95% CI: 1.1-18.1; p = .03, OR a = 2.9; 95%CI: 1.1-7.8; p = .02, respectively). Also, increased quality of life score reduced the odds of AHCU (OR a = 0.6; 95% CI: 0.4-0.9; p = .01). Oral mucositis can be caused by chemotherapy and can affect a patient's quality of life. Nowadays, to prevent chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (CIOM) is a crucial point in palliative care centers. This trial aimed to assess the effectiveness of aloe-vera in that concept. The trial was accomplished at Hematology Department of Hospital of Children of Damascus University, Syria. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) children were the population from which 26 children were enrolled in the study. They were aged between 3 and 6 years old and were randomly referred according to the intervention into two groups, Aloe-vera (AV) and sodium bicarbonate 5% (13 each). Spongeous sticks were used to help in applying the material on tongue, labial and buccal mucosa, lips, floor of the mouth, and hard palate. Two blinded external examiners evaluated oral mucosa weekly for up to 2 months using the World Health Organization grading scale. Mann–Whitney U test was used to analyze data. According to the observed findings, CIOM degrees were less severe in the aloe-vera group than in the sodium bicarbonate group. Statistically significant difference of occurrence of different CIOM degrees between groups was recorded in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th weeks of follow-up period. Moreover, Mann–Whitney U test indicated that patients in the sodium bicarbonate group began CIOM sooner than those in the aloe-vera group with a statistically significant difference (p =.001). This study aimed to reduce maternal anxiety scores and heart rates, increase oxygen saturation linked to vaccination processes with Skin-to skin contact (SSC). The study is a prospective, multicenter, paired, randomized, controlled trial. This experimental study was conducted with a pretest‐posttest control group. The study was carried out with 128 mothers of infants. A Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the State Anxiety Inventory and a pulse oximeter were used in the data collection. In the study, SSC began to be given to the infants in the intervention group five minutes before vaccination and the infant was left in SSC for an uninterrupted 15 minutes following the vaccination. The maternal anxiety scores were noted before and after the vaccination process. The mothers' heart rates and oxygen saturation were monitored a total of three times. The anxiety scores of the intervention group decreased while oxygen saturation increased after the vaccination as compared to the control group. The heart rate decreased in the intervention group but increased in the control group. The study revealed that SSC reduced scores of maternal anxiety and heart rates and increased oxygen saturation during the vaccination process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Risky behaviors are common in developing countries, especially in adolescence. Moreover, sensation seeking is an important factor in personality. This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between risky behaviors and sensation-seeking in a sample of Iranian adolescents. This study used a cross-sectional method with 400 high school adolescents (age between 15 and 21 years old) in Kashan city from multistage random sampling. The research instrument consisted of three parts: a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) and the Zuckerman Sensation-Seeking Scale-V (SSS-V). Data analysis was performed using the t-test, ANOVA, chi-square, regression and Spearman correlation coefficient in SPSS v 11.5. Risky behaviors were found in 51.2% of students, and a significant difference was found between the male and female students in this regard (p <.021). The overall sensation-seeking score and the scores in the dimensions of experience seeking, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility were higher in males than females (p <.0001). All dimensions of sensation-seeking other than disinhibition dimension could significantly predict risky behavior. Sensation seeking can be used as an indicator for screening risky behaviors. Detailed planning on the part of the health care system and public authorities is recommended for appropriate screening and counseling adolescents with risky behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early motherhood may develop various stresses for the teen mothers and have adverse consequences. Current research aims at exploring experiences of teen mothers with stress and stressors of early motherhood. This qualitative study was conducted using conventional content analysis through in-depth semistructured interview. Eighteen Iranian teen mothers, who experienced parenting stress, with maximum variation in the age of first pregnancy, child's age, place of residence, and financial condition took part in this research. Data collection continued until saturation and were analyzed using MAXQDA10 software. Data analysis led to extraction of five categories including "storm of anxiety," "wander identity," "an unaccompanied way," "unarmed combat," and "a tired body." Teen mothers experienced tensions such as fear and worry, isolation and loneliness, regret, shame, depression, and doubt. These tensions originated from identity conflicts, inadequate social support, role inefficiencies, physical problems, and responsibilities. Teen mothers are influenced by various physical, psychological, social, and economic stressors which are in relation with the teenage, motherhood role, and the environment. Nurses are the major source of support for the teen mothers. Nurses should identify stress and stressors in teen mothers and strengthen well-being feeling in the teen mothers and their children through care, educational, consultative, and coordination interventions. Parenting stress is generally associated with poorer psychological adjustment in caregivers and children with chronic illness. Although parenting stress in pediatric cancer has been previously demonstrated, few studies have investigated this problem when treatments end. The present study aimed to describe disease-related parenting stress in the post-treatment phase of pediatric cancer, and to analyze the role of parents' age and education, family functioning, and perceived child vulnerability in predicting disease-related parenting stress. The study comprised 56 parents of children with cancer, in the post-treatment phase, who completed a clinical and demographic questionnaire, as well as the Pediatric Inventory for Parents, assessing parenting stress, the Child Perceived Vulnerability Scale, and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale-Version IV. Results revealed that the level of disease-related parenting stress in the post-treatment phase was still significant. Emotional stress scores were especially high, further showing that parents' concerns in this phase focus mainly on the long-term impact of the disease and treatments, involving intense feelings of fear and uncertainty. A model with four predictors was tested using regression analysis, which explained 57% of parenting stress variance. More specifically, findings indicated that parental age and education significantly predicted parenting stress, accounting for over one-third of the variance in this outcome. Family functioning and perceived child vulnerability explained an additional 18% of parenting stress. Findings of this study suggest that even when treatment ends, there is still the need for continued support in order to assist parents' ability to deal with the implications of having a child who had cancer. Asthma is a condition where the airways become tiny and swollen producing extra mucus. This can cause breathing difficulty and wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Self-care education affects the quality of life of children. This study examined the effect of self-care education on quality of life for children between 8 and 11 years with allergic asthma. This study was a randomized controlled trial. Study sample included 70 children between 8 and 11 years with asthma allergy referred to Children's Hospital Clinic of Khorramabad, Lorestan Province in 2015; they were selected by possible non-consecutive sampling method. Children were divided by random sampling of blocks, and classified into two groups of 35 patients each in the experimental and control groups. Both groups were matched for age and sex of children's and parents' educational level and initial quality of life scores were analyzed (using covariance analysis). At the beginning, quality of life was calculated by the Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ) for each of the group. The intervention was carried out in four sessions of 45 minutes of self-care education for children in the case group. No intervention was done in the control group. Eight weeks later quality of life was measured in each of the group. There was a significant difference between increase values of PAQLQ in the intervention group and control group (p < 0.001). Effective assessment tools are an essential element of early identification of problems, enabling early intervention in the first two or so years of life. This article reports on the development and evaluation of a Universal Assessment Tool for Early Help in Early Years. The project aim was to develop, pilot and evaluate a new universal assessment tool named "My Family Profile" for use within Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, from pregnancy until a child reaches 2/2.5 years of age. A flowchart demonstrates the stages of the process including how each step contributed toward the tool and end report (Neill et al., 2015). The project used an intervention design enabling collaborative inter-agency working and ensured parents were engaged throughout the process. The methods used in developing the tool incorporated collaborative working, content analysis, format requirements, questioning styles and information sharing. The tool was evaluated using focus groups and individual interviews with parents, an online evaluation questionnaire and audit of completed assessment forms with practitioners. The resulting report (Neill et al., 2015) contained "My Family Profile" highlighted five key recommendations: (1) It is developed in a digital format with secure "cloud" storage, accessible from all IT platforms in use by child health/care professionals; (2) it is implemented with a comprehensive training program for professionals; (3) it is formally evaluated following implementation; (4) it is extended up to school entry and through school years; and (5) it is developed for use within other locations in the United Kingdom. Unintentional injuries are a growing global public health problem that causes mortality, morbidity, and disability among children. These injuries are common among under-fives and form a significant burden on healthcare systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Nurses and doctors have a major role to play in the prevention of home injuries, as expressed in many international reports. In Palestine, there is a paucity of research in this area. Therefore, this study aims to explore nurses' and doctors' perceptions and practices regarding the prevention of home injuries among children aged under-five years. A qualitative approach was followed, whereby semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 24 nurses and doctors who worked with children in a primary health care setting. The derived data were analyzed using thematic analysis. This study found that most of the nurses and doctors who were interviewed reported positive attitudes toward working on this topic; the majority of them attempted to work on injury prevention. Nevertheless, they needed further support to fulfil this potential role, as they faced many barriers in their daily practice in this area. Mucositis is a common and devastating side effect of chemotherapeutic agents in children undergoing chemotherapy. The prevention and management of mucositis are necessary to improve these children's quality of life. Oral care is a recommended strategy for preventing and managing oral mucositis. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the relationship between oral care practice and mucositis incidence. A cross-sectional analytical design was used in this study. A total of 34 children from 3 to 12 years of age with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who were in the last cycle of chemotherapy were recruited through a snowball sampling method. The Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) was administered to assess the severity of mucositis. A majority of the participants (51.5%) had mucositis after completing the last cycle of chemotherapy. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant relationship between their oral care practice at home and mucositis incidence. These results show that oral care at home is linked with the incidence and severity of mucositis. Nurses should educate children with leukemia and their parents regarding good oral hygiene practice. Health care providers need to develop improved methods of educating adolescents. This study was developed to evaluate adolescents’ responses to and satisfaction with an educational text message intervention to promote healthy behaviors, reduce the incidence of unhealthy behaviors, and prevent high-risk behaviors. Adolescent participants received weekly text messages regarding high-risk sexual behaviors, healthy dietary habits, exercise, drug, or alcohol use, and social issues. Results indicate adolescents learned something new, made a behavioral change, and overall liked the delivery of educational information via text message. This indicates long-term continuation of a text message intervention is a viable means to deliver adolescent health information, thereby improving an adolescent’s current and future health status. Pregnant teens often feel uncertain in the last trimester about their ability to take care of their baby. At this time, maternal confidence in the ability to care for the baby is an important step in the preparation for becoming a mother. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of an Indonesian version of the Young Adult Maternal Confidence Scale (YAMCS) as an instrument to measure maternal self-efficacy of pregnant teens in the last trimester. The study consisted of 90 pregnant teens, age of respondents less than 19 years and living in 1 of 3 sub-districts: Cilember, Sukamanah and Megamendung, Bogor Regency. West Java. All the participants completed a questionnaire based on the YAMCS to assess maternal self-efficacy. The YAMCS consists of 3 dimensions (perception of ability, uncertainty, and mothering behaviors) and 10 items. All items of the YAMCS had corrected item-total item correlation more than 0.3 and had 0.859 Cronbach’s α scores. Based on the findings of this study, this questionnaire is a valid and reliable measure of maternal self-efficacy of pregnant teens in Indonesia.
