To explore whether the brain contains pattern differences in the rock–paper–scissors (RPS) imagery task, this paper attempts to classify this task using fNIRS and deep learning. In this study, we designed an RPS task with a total duration of 25 min and 40 s, and recruited 22 volunteers for the experiment. We used the fNIRS acquisition device (FOIRE-3000) to record the cerebral neural activities of these participants in the RPS task. The time series classification (TSC) algorithm was introduced into the time-domain fNIRS signal classification. Experiments show that CNN-based TSC methods can achieve 97% accuracy in RPS classification. CNN-based TSC method is suitable for the classification of fNIRS signals in RPS motor imagery tasks, and may find new application directions for the development of brain–computer interfaces (BCI).

Cyber Physical Systems (CPSs) are systems that are developed by seamlessly integrating computational algorithms and physical components, and they are a result of the technological advancement in the embedded systems and distributed systems domains, as well as the availability of sophisticated networking technology. Many industrial CPSs are subject to timing predictability, security and functional safety requirements, due to which the developers of these systems are required to verify these requirements during the their development. This position paper starts by exploring the state of the art with respect to developing timing predictable and secure embedded systems. Thereafter, the paper extends the discussion to time-critical and secure CPSs and highlights the key issues that are faced when verifying the timing predictability requirements during the development of these systems. In this context, the paper takes the position to advocate paramount importance of security as a prerequisite for timing predictability, as well as both security and timing predictability as prerequisites for functional safety. Moreover, the paper identifies the gaps in the existing frameworks and techniques for the development of time- and safety-critical CPSs and describes our viewpoint on ensuring timing predictability and security in these systems. Finally, the paper emphasises the opportunities that artificial intelligence can provide in the development of these systems.

A novel nanopositioning platform (referred as NanoPla) in development has been designed to achieve nanometre resolution in a large working range of 50 mm &times, 50 mm. Two-dimensional (2D) movement is performed by four custom-made Halbach linear motors, and a 2D laser system provides positioning feedback, while the moving part of the platform is levitating and unguided. For control hardware, this work proposes the use of a commercial generic solution, in contrast to other systems where the control hardware and software are specifically designed for that purpose. In a previous paper based on this research, the control system of one linear motor implemented in selected commercial hardware was presented. In this study, the developed control system is extended to the four motors of the nanopositioning platform to generate 2D planar movement in the whole working range of the nanopositioning platform. In addition, the positioning uncertainty of the control system is assessed. The obtained results satisfy the working requirements of the NanoPla, achieving a positioning uncertainty of &plusmn, 0.5 &micro, m along the whole working range.

The AHP–GTMA (analytic hierarchy process and graph theory and matrix approach) has been applied to select the best paper shredder before a company was making a bulk purchase order. However, there is a question as to whether one such relatively recent approach is effective to aid the selection decision problems in industrial/commercial practice. In this paper, a novel multi-measure, rank-based comparative research flow is proposed. The real decision problem case mentioned above is solved using the AHP–GTMA and the AHP–TOPSIS methods, respectively, with relevant datasets sourced. Several measures in the proposed flow, i.e., the arithmetical, geometrical, or even statistical ones, are multiplexed and used to validate the similarity between the rank order vectors (ROVs) (and thus between the final preferential orders determined over the alternatives) that are obtained using these two different methods. While AHP–TOPSIS is a confident multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) approach which has been successfully applied to many other fields, the similarity validated between these individual results using the proposed method is used to confirm the efficacy of the AHP–GTMA approach and to determine its applicability in practice. In addition, along with this study, some contributable points are also rendered for implementing the decision models, e.g., the optimized recursive implementation in R to compute the permanent value of a square ASAM (alternative selection attribute matrix, which is the computational basis required by AHP–GTMA) of any dimension. The proposed methodological flow to confirm the similarity based on the ordinal rank information is not only convenient in operational practice with ubiquitous tool supports (e.g., the vector-based R statistical platform), but also generalizable (to verify between another pair of results obtained using any other MADM methods). This gives options for future research.

The smart, rapid, and customizable detection of chemical warfare agents is a huge issue for taking the proper countermeasures in a timely fashion. The printing techniques have established the main pillar to develop miniaturized electrochemical biosensors for onsite and fast detection of nerve and mustard agents, allowing for a lab on a chip in the chemical warfare agent sector. In the fast growth of novel technologies, the combination of miniaturized electrochemical biosensors with flexible electronics allowed for the delivery of useful wearable sensors capable of fast detection of chemical warfare agents. The wearable microneedle sensor array for minimally invasive continuous electrochemical detection of organophosphorus nerve agents, as well as the wearable paper-based origami functionalized with nanomaterials for mustard agents in the gas phase, represent two examples of the forefront devices developed in the chemical warfare agent detection field. This review will highlight the most promising electrochemical biosensors developed by exploiting nanomaterials and cross-cutting technologies for the fabrication of smart and sensitive electrochemical biosensors for the detection of chemical warfare agents.

In recent years, reversible data hiding (RDH) has become a research hotspot in the field of multimedia security that has aroused more and more researchers&rsquo, attention. Most of the existing RDH algorithms are aiming at continuous-tone images. For RDH in encrypted halftone images (RDH-EH), the original cover image cannot be recovered losslessly after the watermark is extracted. For some application scenarios such as medical or military images sharing, reversibility is critical. In this paper, a reversible data hiding scheme in encrypted color halftone images (RDH-ECH) is proposed. In the watermark embedding procedure, the cover image is copied into two identical images to increase redundancy. We use wet paper code to embed the watermark into the image blocks. Thus, the receiver only needs to process the image blocks by the check matrices in order to extract the watermarks. To increase embedding capacity, we embed three layers in the embedding procedure and combine the resulting images into one image for convenience of transmission. From the experimental results, it can be concluded that the original image can be restored entirely after the watermarks are extracted. Besides, for marked color halftone images, our algorithm can implement high embedding capacity and moderate visual quality.

Reinforced concrete is the most commonly used material in urban, road, and industrial structures. Quantifying the condition of the reinforcing steel can help manage the human and financial risks that arise from unexpected reinforced concrete structure functional failure. Also, a quantitative time history of reinforcing steel condition can be used to make decisions on rehabilitation, decommissioning, or replacement. The self-magnetic behavior of ferromagnetic materials is useful for quantitative condition assessment. In this study, a ferromagnetic rebar with artificial defects was scanned by a three-dimensional (3D) laser scanner. The obtained point cloud was imported as a real geometry to a finite element software platform, its self-magnetic behavior was then simulated under the influence of Earth&rsquo, s magnetic field. The various passive magnetic parameters that can be measured were reviewed for different conditions. Statistical studies showed that 0.76% of the simulation-obtained data of the rebar surface was related to the defect locations. Additionally, acceptable coincidences were confirmed between the magnetic properties from numerical simulation and from experimental outputs, most noticeably at hole locations.

International audience; The advent of telerobotic systems has revolutionized various aspects of the industry and human life. This technology is designed to augment human sensorimotor capabilities to extend them beyond natural competence. Classic examples are space and underwater applications when distance and access are the two major physical barriers to be combated with this technology. In modern examples, telerobotic systems have been used in several clinical applications, including teleoperated surgery and telerehabilitation. In this regard, there has been a significant amount of research and development due to the major benefits in terms of medical outcomes. Recently telerobotic systems are combined with advanced artificial intelligence modules to better share the agency with the operator and open new doors of medical automation. In this review paper, we have provided a comprehensive analysis of the literature considering various topologies of telerobotic systems in the medical domain while shedding light on different levels of autonomy for this technology, starting from direct control, going up to command-tracking autonomous telerobots. Existing challenges, including instrumentation, transparency, autonomy, stochastic communication delays, and stability, in addition to the current direction of research related to benefit in telemedicine and medical automation, and future vision of this technology, are discussed in this review paper

In this paper, we provide a holistic survey of multimedia content protection applications in which blockchain technology is being used. A taxonomy is developed to classify these applications with reference to the technical aspects of blockchain technology, content protection techniques, namely, encryption, digital rights management, digital watermarking and fingerprinting (or transaction tracking), and performance criteria. The study of the literature reveals that there is currently no complete and systematic taxonomy dedicated to blockchain-based copyright protection applications. Moreover, the number of successfully developed blockchain-based content protection systems is very low. This points towards a research gap. To fill this gap, we propose a taxonomy that integrates technical aspects and application knowledge and can guide the researchers towards the development of blockchain-based multimedia copyright protection systems. Furthermore, the paper discusses some technical challenges and outlines future research directions.

In this paper, the performance of a lightning protection system (LPS) on a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) park is studied by simulating different scenarios with the use of an appropriate software tool. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of an LPS and optimize its design for the protection of equipment and personnel in case of a direct lightning strike. In particular, developed potential due to lightning strikes is examined considering isolated and non-isolated external LPS. Moreover, the effect of the separation distance on the lightning performance of the PV installation is investigated for different soil structures and grounding systems. The extracted results are expected to support the design and implementation of a secure PV park and endorse its uninterrupted operation considering techno-economically balanced protection measures.

Recent advancements in sensor, mobile computing, and wireless communication technologies is creating new opportunities to effectively exploit real-time traffic data. Onboard vehicles collect, process, simulate traffic states in a distributed fashion and a local transportation management center coordinates the overall simulation with an optimistic execution technique. Such a distributed approach can provide more up-to-date and robust estimates with decreased communication bandwidth requirements and increased computing capacity. This paper proposes an online ad hoc distributed simulation. The physical operating platform for the model including operating system, communicational middleware, and traffic simulation model are described. Also, this paper investigates the analytical background of rollback process of the proposed ad hoc distributed simulation model. Flow rate diagram and cumulative number of vehicle diagram show that the overall system simulation speed and estimate accuracy may differ significantly as a function of the selected threshold.

The study focuses on the application of a nonparametric methodology for evaluating the sustainability of retrofitting interventions to be applied on different typologies of buildings and different climate zones of the Mediterranean area. The paper starts from the analysis of data collected through the HAPPEN project, that is a H2020 European project which proposes a holistic approach for a deep and sustainable renovation of the Mediterranean residential Building stock. Even if the European Commission allocated considerable funds for retrofitting interventions, the choice of the optimal solution is not always that easy because several variables have to be considered. The present manuscript proposes a methodology to compare different retrofitting solutions combining Life-Cycle Cost (i.e., LCC) estimations with the nonparametric Directional Distance Function approach (i.e., DDF). In detail, the literature suggests that the DDF can be effectively used for comparing different observations through efficiency scores. The main result of the paper is the definition of a hybrid methodology that, starting from estimates of LCC and applying a DDF technique, represents a simple method for evaluating the best retrofitting intervention. Results are represented by two scores where the former represents a holistic efficiency measure, while the latter shows an environmental efficiency score.

International audience; Over the past decade, interest in autonomous vessels significantly increased as the technology improved, especially in the automotive industry. Unlike cars, ships travel in a wild environment and maritime lanes are not limited by white lines. This makes the design of fully autonomous vessels even more challenging. Additionally, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions led to a renewed interest in wind propulsion. Sailboats have several advantages, such as full energy autonomy and a limited environmental impact. The Microtransat Challenge, which consists of crossing the Atlantic Ocean, is a tremendous test field. This paper describes, within that frame, a design procedure for the development of a robust fully autonomous sailboat to be deployed for long-term missions. In this paper, the mechanical and electronic design strategies are presented. A focus is on reliability and power management. Moreover, a test procedure for validating each design increment is described as well as a path plan that considers the risk of collision and weather routing with wind and currents. The Microtransat remains a challenge that no autonomous ship has ever succeeded (and has been completed by a single unmanned vessel, SB Met in 2018). However, the results by Breizh Tigresse and Sealeon in 2015 and 2018 made a step forward in terms of time and distance. They are presented and analyzed in this work

Nowadays, personalized recommendation based on knowledge graphs has become a hot spot for researchers due to its good recommendation effect. In this paper, we researched personalized recommendation based on knowledge graphs. First of all, we study the knowledge graphs’ construction method and complete the construction of the movie knowledge graphs. Furthermore, we use Neo4j graph database to store the movie data and vividly display it. Then, the classical translation model TransE algorithm in knowledge graph representation learning technology is studied in this paper, and we improved the algorithm through a cross-training method by using the information of the neighboring feature structures of the entities in the knowledge graph. Furthermore, the negative sampling process of TransE algorithm is improved. The experimental results show that the improved TransE model can more accurately vectorize entities and relations. Finally, this paper constructs a recommendation model by combining knowledge graphs with ranking learning and neural network. We propose the Bayesian personalized recommendation model based on knowledge graphs (KG-BPR) and the neural network recommendation model based on knowledge graphs (KG-NN). The semantic information of entities and relations in knowledge graphs is embedded into vector space by using improved TransE method, and we compare the results. The item entity vectors containing external knowledge information are integrated into the BPR model and neural network, respectively, which make up for the lack of knowledge information of the item itself. Finally, the experimental analysis is carried out on MovieLens-1M data set. The experimental results show that the two recommendation models proposed in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy, recall, F1 value and MAP value of recommendation.

Mobility in cities is a fundamental asset and opens several problems in decision making and the creation of new services for citizens. In the last years, transportation sharing systems have been continuously growing. Among these, bike sharing systems became commonly adopted. There exist two different categories of bike sharing systems: station-based systems and free-floating services. In this paper, we concentrate our analyses on station-based systems. Such systems require periodic rebalancing operations to guarantee good quality of service and system usability by moving bicycles from full stations to empty stations. In particular, in this paper, we propose a dynamic bicycle rebalancing methodology based on frequent pattern mining and its implementation. The extracted patterns represent frequent unbalanced situations among nearby stations. They are used to predict upcoming critical statuses and plan the most effective rebalancing operations using an entirely data-driven approach. Experiments performed on real data of the Barcelona bike sharing system show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Databases are an important part of today’s applications where large amounts of data need to be stored, processed, and accessed quickly. One of the important criteria when choosing to use a database technology is its data processing performance. In this paper, some methods for optimizing the database structure and queries were applied on two popular open-source database management systems: MySQL as a relational DBMS, and document-based MySQL as a non-relational DBMS. The main objective of this paper was to conduct a comparative analysis of the impact that the proposed optimization methods have on each specific DBMS when carrying out CRUD (CREATE, READ, UPDATE, DELETE) requests. To perform the analysis and performance evaluation of CRUD operations for different amounts of data, a case study testing architecture based on Java was developed and used to show how the databases’ proposed optimization methods can influence the performance of the application, and to highlight the differences in response time and complexity. The results obtained show the degree to which the proposed optimization methods contributed to the application’s performance improvement in the case of both databases, based on these, a detailed analysis and several conclusions are presented to support a decision for choosing a specific approach.

Multiobjective optimization is a common problem in the field of industrial cutting. In actual production settings, it is necessary to rely on the experience of skilled workers to achieve multiobjective collaborative optimization. The process of industrial intelligence is to perceive the parameters of a cut object through sensors and use machines instead of manual decision making. However, the traditional sequential algorithm cannot satisfy multiobjective optimization problems. This paper studies the multiobjective optimization problem of irregular objects in the field of aquatic product processing and uses the information guidance strategy to develop a simulated annealing algorithm to solve the problem according to the characteristics of the object itself. By optimizing the mutation strategy, the ability of the simulated annealing algorithm to jump out of the local optimal solution is improved. The project team developed an experimental prototype to verify the algorithm. The experimental results show that compared with the traditional sequential algorithm method, the simulated degradation algorithm designed in this paper effectively improves the quality of the target solution and greatly enhances the economic value of the product by addressing the multiobjective optimization problem of squid cutting. At the end of the article, the cutting error is analyzed.

This paper proposes a novel genetic algorithm (GA) approach that utilizes a multichromosome to solve the flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP), which involves two kinds of decisions: machine selection and operation sequencing. Typically, the former is represented by a string of categorical values, whereas the latter forms a sequence of operations. Consequently, the chromosome of conventional GAs for solving FJSP consists of a categorical part and a sequential part. Since these two parts are different from each other, different kinds of genetic operators are required to solve the FJSP using conventional GAs. In contrast, this paper proposes a unified GA approach that enables the application of an identical crossover strategy in both the categorical and sequential parts. In order to implement the unified approach, the sequential part is evolved by applying a candidate order-based GA (COGA), which can use traditional crossover strategies such as one-point or two-point crossovers. Such crossover strategies can also be used to evolve the categorical part. Thus, we can handle the categorical and sequential parts in an identical manner if identical crossover points are used for both. In this study, the unified approach was used to extend the existing COGA to a unified COGA (u-COGA), which can be used to solve FJSPs. Numerical experiments reveal that the u-COGA is useful for solving FJSPs with complex structures.

The System Operator (SO), also known as Nine Boxes or Multiscreen, is classically used for analysing the undesired situation according to different perspectives. However, its logic can be suitably exploited also for other kinds of tasks. In such a context, this paper shows an alternative application of the SO. In particular, the new proposed SO approach allows us to formulate alternative problems, i.e., different from the central one, although referring to the same problem-solving task. By applying the proposed procedure to a real case study, this paper shows that the tool can be used for problem analysis and formulation purposes, aimed at better clarifying the problem-solving task. The case study concerns a preliminary set of experiments performed to evaluate the possibility of obtaining angular shapes by bending tiles made by a specific compostable composite material. The suggestions obtained using the proposed SO approach allowed us to find potentially valid solutions, thus paving the way for further validation tests. In particular, tests are still needed to validate the actual potentialities of the proposed SO. Additionally, further and more comprehensive tests are required to validate the solutions inferred in this study concerning the compostable tiles.

In the shipbuilding industry, each production process has a respective lead time, that is, the duration between start and finish times. Lead time is necessary for high-efficiency production planning and systematic production management. Therefore, lead time must be accurate. However, the traditional method of lead time management is not scientific because it only references past records. This paper proposes a new self-organizing hierarchical particle swarm algorithm (PSO) with jumping time-varying acceleration coefficients (NHPSO-JTVAC)-support vector machine (SVM) regression model to increase the accuracy of lead-time prediction by combining the advanced PSO and SVM models. Moreover, this paper compares the prediction results of each SVM-based model with those of other conventional machine-learning algorithms. The results demonstrate that the proposed NHPSO-JTVAC-SVM model can achieve further meaningful enhancements in terms of prediction accuracy. The prediction performance of the NHPSO-JTVAC-SVM model is also better than that of the other SVM-based models or other machine learning algorithms. Overall, the NHPSO–JTVAC-SVM model is feasible for predicting the lead time in shipbuilding.

In the process of making a critical decision in reservoir engineering, most of the time we find ourselves in a quandary. Like in any other scientific or technical field, when we find ourselves having to make a critical decision at a juncture, we cannot go ahead with our gut feelings, but rather must figure out what knowledge and information is lacking. In generating the missing knowledge and understanding, the depth and the rapid nature of the search will surface as two critical parameters. In other words, most of the time, a shallow search that can be conducted in a short period of time will not produce the missing information and the knowledge and more often, possibly, it will provide misguidance. When a large volume of sources of information is reviewed and the missing knowledge is generated using unbiased deductive methodologies, then, one can make an informed decision based on facts rather than intuition. In achieving such a desired result, it will be necessary to use fast algorithmic protocols to not sacrifice the wide nature of the search domain, to ensure that it is possible to generate the desired solution. In this paper, it is shown how in reservoir engineering desirable decisions can be reached in a timely manner choosing the most appealing course of action. It is true that in reservoir engineering applications, the decision-making process may involve a blend of intuition and scientific and rational thinking, critical factors such as blind spots, and the use of conventional methodologies that make decision-making hard to fully operationalize or to get a handle on. Luckily, there are mathematical and computational tools to ensure that scientists/engineers consistently make correct decisions, which include gathering as much information as possible and considering all possible alternatives (like combinatorial analysis protocols). The tool (model) proposed in this paper for making critical reservoir engineering decisions is a new computational platform/protocol that exploits the advantages of mathematically developed formulations and of the models that are based on the data/information collected. It is furthermore shown that the analyses conducted, and critical decisions reached, represent more thorough and far-reaching solutions that are structured using less computational overhead, thereby increasing the quality of the decision even further.

The water purification process is becoming increasingly important to ensure the continuity and quality of subsequent production processes, and it is particularly relevant in pharmaceutical contexts. However, in this context, the difficulties arising during the monitoring process are manifold. On the one hand, the monitoring process reveals various discontinuities due to different characteristics of the input water. On the other hand, the monitoring process is discontinuous and random itself, thus not guaranteeing continuity of the parameters and hindering a straightforward analysis. Consequently, further research on water purification processes is paramount to identify the most suitable techniques able to guarantee good performance. Against this background, this paper proposes an application of kernel principal component analysis for fault detection in a process with the above-mentioned characteristics. Based on the temporal variability of the process, the paper suggests the use of past and future matrices as input for fault detection as an alternative to the original dataset. In this manner, the temporal correlation between process parameters and machine health is accounted for. The proposed approach confirms the possibility of obtaining very good monitoring results in the analyzed context.

In order to effectively reduce the impact of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) attacks while providing mobile terminals with credible navigation and positioning results, this paper proposes a credible navigation algorithm for GNSS attack detection using an auxiliary sensor system. Based on a credible Kalman filter and measurement information provided by the auxiliary sensor system on mobile terminals, the proposed algorithm can verify the credibility of the GNSS positioning result and determine whether it has suffered from a GNSS attack using the credible verification window and the credible verification threshold. According to the verification results, the algorithm can adaptively select an updated model for measurement correction and achieve a credible navigation result. The algorithm proposed in this paper has been verified on a self-developed mobile terminal, and the experimental results show that the algorithm can provide credible navigation and positioning services for mobile terminals in the context of GNSS attacks.

This paper proposes a lane detection algorithm using a laser range finder (LRF) for the autonomous navigation of a mobile robot. There are many technologies for ensuring the safety of vehicles, such as airbags, ABS, and EPS. Further, lane detection is a fundamental requirement for an automobile system that utilizes the external environment information of automobiles. Representative methods of lane recognition are vision-based and LRF-based systems. In the case of a vision-based system, the recognition of the environment of a three-dimensional space becomes excellent only in good conditions for capturing images. However, there are so many unexpected barriers, such as bad illumination, occlusions, vibrations, and thick fog, that the vision-based method cannot be used for satisfying the abovementioned fundamental requirement. In this paper, a three-dimensional lane detection algorithm using LRF that is very robust against illumination is proposed. For the three-dimensional lane detection, the laser reflection difference between the asphalt and the lane according to color and distance has been utilized with the extraction of feature points. Further, a stable tracking algorithm is introduced empirically in this research. The performance of the proposed algorithm of lane detection and tracking has been experimentally verified.

Rainfall-runoff (R-R) modelling is used to study the runoff generation of a catchment. The quantity or rate of change measure of the hydrological variable, called runoff, is important for environmental scientists to accomplish water-related planning and design. This paper proposes (i) an integrated model namely EO-ELM (an integration of equilibrium optimizer (EO) and extreme learning machine (ELM)) and (ii) a deep neural network (DNN) for one day-ahead R-R modelling. The proposed R-R models are validated at two different benchmark stations of the catchments, namely river Teifi at Glanteifi and river Fal at Tregony in the UK. Firstly, a partial autocorrelation function (PACF) is used for optimal number of lag inputs to deploy the proposed models. Six other well-known machine learning models, called ELM, kernel ELM (KELM), and particle swarm optimization-based ELM (PSO-ELM), support vector regression (SVR), artificial neural network (ANN) and gradient boosting machine (GBM) are utilized to validate the two proposed models in terms of prediction efficiency. Furthermore, to increase the performance of the proposed models, paper utilizes a discrete wavelet-based data pre-processing technique is applied in rainfall and runoff data. The performance of wavelet-based EO-ELM and DNN are compared with wavelet-based ELM (WELM), KELM (WKELM), PSO-ELM (WPSO-ELM), SVR (WSVR), ANN (WANN) and GBM (WGBM). An uncertainty analysis and two-tailed t-test are carried out to ensure the trustworthiness and efficacy of the proposed models. The experimental results for two different time series datasets show that the EO-ELM performs better in an optimal number of lags than the others. In the case of wavelet-based daily R-R modelling, proposed models performed better and showed robustness compared to other models used. Therefore, this paper shows the efficient applicability of EO-ELM and DNN in R-R modelling that may be used in the hydrological modelling field.

In this paper, we propose a new type of visually induced reduction method for virtual reality (VR) sickness. This method induces a gaze based on a visual guide (VG). Although VGs are used in commercial VR game contents as crosshairs, no studies have been conducted related to VR sickness. VGs can have various properties determined by position, size, shape, color, etc., and it was necessary to investigate which properties affect VR sickness. In particular, size and position of VG are properties that directly affect the user’s gaze movement. Therefore, in this paper, five VR sickness reduction methods with different position and size of VG are proposed. Then, an experiment was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed VR sickness reduction method. To this end, a SSQ (including nausea, oculomotor discomfort, disorientation, and total score) and a questionnaire on fatigue and immersion were used. From the experimental results, a VG with a size 30% that of the aspect ratio, and a position synchronized to the user’s head movement direction, was most effective in terms of VR sickness reduction and immersion.

The usage of imbalanced databases is a recurrent problem in real-world data such as medical diagnostic, fraud detection, and pattern recognition. Nevertheless, in class imbalance problems, the classifiers are commonly biased by the class with more objects (majority class) and ignore the class with fewer objects (minority class). There are different ways to solve the class imbalance problem, and there has been a trend towards the usage of patterns and fuzzy approaches due to the favorable results. In this paper, we provide an in-depth review of popular methods for imbalanced databases related to patterns and fuzzy approaches. The reviewed papers include classifiers, data preprocessing, and evaluation metrics. We identify different application domains and describe how the methods are used. Finally, we suggest further research directions according to the analysis of the reviewed papers and the trend of the state of the art.

Summaries of scientific publications enable readers to gain an overview of a large number of studies, but users’ preferences have not yet been explored. In this paper, we conduct two user studies (i.e., short- and long-term studies) where Japanese university students read summaries of English research articles that were either manually written or automatically generated using text summarization and/or machine translation. In the short-term experiment, subjects compared and evaluated the two types of summaries of the same article. We analyze the characteristics in the generated summaries that readers regard as important, such as content richness and simplicity. The experimental results show that subjects are mainly judged based on four criteria, including content richness, simplicity, fluency, and format. In the long-term experiment, subjects read 50 summaries and answered whether they would like to read the original papers after reading the summaries. We discuss the characteristics in the summaries that readers tend to use to determine whether to read the papers, such as topic, methods, and results. The comments from subjects indicate that specific components of scientific publications, including research topics and methods, are important to judge whether to read or not. Our study provides insights to enhance the effectiveness of automatic summarization of scientific publications.

The diagnosis of abnormal transformer oil temperature is of great significance to guarantee the normal operation of the transformer. Due to concept drift, the oil temperature abnormal diagnosis of the oil-immersed main power transformer is usually unstable via the classic data mining method. Thus, this paper proposes an adaptive abnormal oil temperature diagnosis method (AAOTD) of the transformer based on concept drift. First, the bagging ensemble learning method was used to predict the oil temperature. Then, abnormal diagnosis was performed based on the difference between the predicted oil temperature and the actual measured oil temperature. At the same time, based on the concept drift detection strategy and Adaboost ensemble learning methods, adaptive update of the base classifier in the abnormal diagnosis model was realized. Experiments validated that the algorithm proposed in this paper can significantly reduce the influence of concept drift and has higher oil temperature prediction accuracy. Furthermore, since this method only utilizes the existing power grid data resources to realize abnormal oil temperature diagnosis without extra monitoring equipment, it is an economic and efficient solution for practical scenarios in the electric power industry.

In manufacturing-cell-formation research, a major concern is to make groups of machines into machine cells and parts into part families. Extensive work has been carried out in this area using various models and techniques. Regarding these ideas, in this paper, experiments with varying parameters of the popular metaheuristic algorithm known as the genetic algorithm have been carried out with a bi-criteria objective function: the minimization of intercell moves and cell load variation. The probability of crossover (A), probability of mutation (B), and balance weight factor (C) are considered parameters for this study. The data sets used in this paper are taken from benchmarked literature in this field. The results are promising regarding determining the optimal combination of the genetic parameters for the machine-cell-formation problems considered in this study.

Immunoglobulin, which is also called an antibody, is a type of serum protein produced by B cells that can specifically bind to the corresponding antigen. Immunoglobulin is closely related to many diseases and plays a key role in medical and biological circles. Therefore, the use of effective methods to improve the accuracy of immunoglobulin classification is of great significance for disease research. In this paper, the CC–PSSM and monoTriKGap methods were selected to extract the immunoglobulin features, MRMD1.0 and MRMD2.0 were used to reduce the feature dimension, and the effect of discriminating the two–dimensional key features identified by the single dimension reduction method from the mixed two–dimensional key features was used to distinguish the immunoglobulins. The data results indicated that monoTrikGap (k = 1) can accurately predict 99.5614% of immunoglobulins under 5-fold cross–validation. In addition, CC–PSSM is the best method for identifying mixed two–dimensional key features and can distinguish 92.1053% of immunoglobulins. The above proves that the method used in this paper is reliable for predicting immunoglobulin and identifying key features.

Blockchain being a leading technology in the 21st century is revolutionizing each sector of life. Services are being provided and upgraded using its salient features and fruitful characteristics. Businesses are being enhanced by using this technology. Countries are shifting towards digital currencies i.e., an initial application of blockchain application. It omits the need of central authority by its distributed ledger functionality. This distributed ledger is achieved by using a consensus mechanism in blockchain. A consensus algorithm plays a core role in the implementation of blockchain. Any application implementing blockchain uses consensus algorithms to achieve its desired task. In this paper, we focus on provisioning of a comparative analysis of blockchain’s consensus algorithms with respect to the type of application. Furthermore, we discuss the development platforms as well as technologies of blockchain. The aim of the paper is to provide knowledge from basic to extensive from blockchain architecture to consensus methods, from applications to development platform, from challenges and issues to blockchain research gaps in various areas.

Standardized approaches to relevance classification in information retrieval use generative statistical models to identify the presence or absence of certain topics that might make a document relevant to the searcher. These approaches have been used to better predict relevance on the basis of what the document is “about”, rather than a simple-minded analysis of the bag of words contained within the document. In more recent times, this idea has been extended by using pre-trained deep learning models and text representations, such as GloVe or BERT. These use an external corpus as a knowledge-base that conditions the model to help predict what a document is about. This paper adopts a hybrid approach that leverages the structure of knowledge embedded in a corpus. In particular, the paper reports on experiments where linked data triples (subject-predicate-object), constructed from natural language elements are derived from deep learning. These are evaluated as additional latent semantic features for a relevant document classifier in a customized news-feed website. The research is a synthesis of current thinking in deep learning models in NLP and information retrieval and the predicate structure used in semantic web research. Our experiments indicate that linked data triples increased the F-score of the baseline GloVe representations by 6% and show significant improvement over state-of-the art models, like BERT. The findings are tested and empirically validated on an experimental dataset and on two standardized pre-classified news sources, namely the Reuters and 20 News groups datasets.

Indirect bridge health monitoring is conducted by running an instrumented vehicle over a bridge, where the vehicle serves as a source of excitation and as a signal receiver, however, it is also important to investigate the response of the instrumented vehicle while it is in a stationary position while the bridge is excited by other source of excitation. In this paper, a numerical model of a stationary vehicle parked on a bridge excited by another moving vehicle is developed. Both stationary and moving vehicles are modeled as spring–mass single-degree-of-freedom systems. The bridges are simply supported and are modeled as 1D beam elements. It is known that the stationary vehicle response is different from the true bridge response at the same location. This paper investigates the effectiveness of contact-point response in reflecting the true response of the bridge. The stationary vehicle response is obtained from the numerical model, and its contact-point response is calculated by MATLAB. The contact-point response of the stationary vehicle is investigated under various conditions. These conditions include different vehicle frequencies, damped and undamped conditions, different locations of the stationary vehicle, road roughness effects, different moving vehicle speeds and masses, and a longer span for the bridge. In the time domain, the discrepancy of the stationary vehicle response with the true bridge response is clear, while the contact-point response agrees well with the true bridge response. The contact-point response could detect the first, second, and third modes of frequency clearly, unlike the stationary vehicle response spectra.

Forecasting the output power of solar PV systems is required for the good operation of the power grid and the optimal management of energy fluxes occurring in the solar system. Before forecasting the solar system’s output, it is essential to focus on the prediction of solar irradiance. In this paper, the solar radiation data collected for two years in a certain place in Jiangsu in China are investigated. The objective of this paper is to improve the ability of short-term solar radiation prediction. Firstly, missing data are recovered through the means of matrix completion. Then the completed data are denoised via robust principal component analysis. To reduce the influence of weather types on solar radiation, spectral clustering is adopted by fusing sparse subspace representation and k-nearest-neighbor to partition the data into three clusters. Next, for each cluster, four neural networks are established to predict the short-term solar radiation. The experimental results show that the proposed method can enhance the solar radiation accuracy.

In this paper, the uplink in a two-hop 5G new radio co-operative system using Relay Nodes (RNs) in millimeter bands has been simulated and studied. We focus on an uplink Amplify-and-Forward Relay Node (A&amp, F RN) and Decode-and-Forward Relay Node (D&amp, F RN) with an mmWave-band transceiver chain (Tx/Rx). We study two uplink mmWave MIMO D&amp, F relaying protocols assuming, firstly, the complete knowledge of the uplink channel and, secondly, the uplink channel estimation through a Least Square (LS) algorithm. To verify the benefits of the proposed uplink mmWave MIMO co-operative network, a link-level co-operative simulator has been developed using MatlabTM and SimulinkTM software, where an indoor-to-outdoor scenario and mmWave transceiver with off-the shelf components are considered. The main novelty of this link-level co-operative simulator and the implemented relay nodes is the usage of signals with 5G NR features, such as UL-SCH transport channel coding and PUSCH generation, which are the other main contributions of this article. Based on the numerical results in terms of the achievable Bit Error Rate (BER) and throughput, we show that the two-hop uplink co-operative network substantially improves the performance in the communications between the NR-User Equipment (NR-UE) and the logical 5G Radio Node (gNodeB). For example, the results from using uplink mmWave NR-D&amp, F protocols far exceed those achieved with the uplink mmWave NR-A&amp, F algorithm, in the case of the 64-QAM modulation scheme for the SISO technique, an improvement of 6.5 Mbps was achieved using the D&amp, F PCE protocol, taking into account that the 256-QAM constellation is higher by 4.05 Mbps. On the other hand, an average throughput enhancement of 28.77 Mbps was achieved when an uplink mmWave (2 × 4 × 4) D&amp, F PCE strategy was used versus an uplink mmWave SISO D&amp, F LS protocol for a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) = 20 dB and 64-QAM signal. However, an improvement of 56.42 Mbps was reached when a 256-QAM modulation scheme was employed. Furthermore, this paper introduces the first study to develop an uplink mmWave MIMO 5G co-operative network platform through a Software Defined Radio (SDR) from a practical implementation point of view.

New technologies, such as cloud computing, the Internet of Things, wireless communications, etc., have already become part of our daily lives. This paper provides an insight into one of the new technologies, i.e., augmented reality (AR), as part of the manufacturing paradigm Industry 4.0 (I4.0). The aim of this paper is to contribute to the current state in the field of AR by assessing the main areas of the application of AR, the used devices and the tracking methods in support of the digitalization of the industry. Searches via Science Direct, Google Scholar and the Internet in general have resulted in the collection of a large number of papers. The examined works are classified according to several criteria and the most important data resulting from them are presented here. A comprehensive analysis of the literature has indicated the main areas of application of AR in I4.0 and, among these, those that stand out are maintenance, assembly and human robot collaboration. Finally, a roadmap for the application of AR in companies is proposed and the most promising future areas of research are listed.

This paper presents a new content-based image retrieval (CBIR) method based on image feature fusion. The deep features are extracted from object-centric and place-centric deep networks. The discrete cosine transform (DCT) solves the strong correlation of deep features and reduces dimensions. The shallow features are extracted from a Quantized Uniform Local Binary Pattern (ULBP), hue-saturation-value (HSV) histogram, and dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT). Singular value decomposition (SVD) is applied to reduce the dimensions of ULBP and DTCWT features. The experimental results tested on Corel datasets and the Oxford building dataset show that the proposed method based on shallow features fusion can significantly improve performance compared to using a single type of shallow feature. The proposed method based on deep features fusion can slightly improve performance compared to using a single type of deep feature. This paper also tests variable factors that affect image retrieval performance, such as using principal component analysis (PCA) instead of DCT. The DCT can be used for dimensional feature reduction without losing too much performance.

Predictive maintenance is very important in industrial plants to support decisions aiming to maximize maintenance investments and equipment’s availability. This paper presents predictive models based on long short-term memory neural networks, applied to a dataset of sensor readings. The aim is to forecast future equipment statuses based on data from an industrial paper press. The datasets contain data from a three-year period. Data are pre-processed and the neural networks are optimized to minimize prediction errors. The results show that it is possible to predict future behavior up to one month in advance with reasonable confidence. Based on these results, it is possible to anticipate and optimize maintenance decisions, as well as continue research to improve the reliability of the model.

There are promising prospects on the way to widespread use of AI, as well as problems that need to be overcome to adapt AI&amp, ML technologies in industries. The paper systematizes the AI sections and calculates the dynamics of changes in the number of scientific articles in machine learning sections according to Google Scholar. The method of data acquisition and calculation of dynamic indicators of changes in publication activity is described: growth rate (D1) and acceleration of growth (D2) of scientific publications. Analysis of publication activity, in particular, showed a high interest in modern transformer models, the development of datasets for some industries, and a sharp increase in interest in methods of explainable machine learning. Relatively small research domains are receiving increasing attention, as evidenced by the negative correlation between the number of articles and D1 and D2 scores. The results show that, despite the limitations of the method, it is possible to (1) identify fast-growing areas of research regardless of the number of articles, and (2) predict publication activity in the short term with satisfactory accuracy for practice (the average prediction error for the year ahead is 6%, with a standard deviation of 7%). This paper presents results for more than 400 search queries related to classified research areas and the application of machine learning models to industries. The proposed method evaluates the dynamics of growth and the decline of scientific domains associated with certain key terms. It does not require access to large bibliometric archives and allows to relatively quickly obtain quantitative estimates of dynamic indicators.

This paper proposes a neural network that fuses the data received from a camera system on a gantry to detect moving objects and calculate the relative position and velocity of the vehicles traveling on a freeway. This information is used to estimate the traffic flow. To estimate the traffic flows at both microscopic and macroscopic levels, this paper used YOLO v4 and DeepSORT for vehicle detection and tracking. The number of vehicles passing on the freeway was then calculated by drawing virtual lines and hot zones. The velocity of each vehicle was also recorded. The information can be passed to the traffic control center in order to monitor and control the traffic flows on freeways and analyze freeway conditions.

The Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is an important tool to mitigate cybersecurity threats in an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure. The function of the IDS is to detect an intrusion to an ICT system or network so that adequate countermeasures can be adopted. Desirable features of IDS are computing efficiency and high intrusion detection accuracy. This paper proposes a new anomaly detection algorithm for IDS, where a machine learning algorithm is applied to detect deviations from legitimate traffic, which may indicate an intrusion. To improve computing efficiency, a sliding window approach is applied where the analysis is applied on large sequences of network flows statistics. This paper proposes a novel approach based on the transformation of the network flows statistics to gray images on which Gray level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) are applied together with an entropy measure recently proposed in literature: the 2D Dispersion Entropy. This approach is applied to the recently public IDS data set CIC-IDS2017. The results show that the proposed approach is competitive in comparison to other approaches proposed in literature on the same data set. The approach is applied to two attacks of the CIC-IDS2017 data set: DDoS and Port Scan achieving respectively an Error Rate of 0.0016 and 0.0048.

Based on the fixed interface component mode synthesis, a multiple and multi-level substructure method for the modeling of complex structures is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the residual structure is selected according to the structural characteristics of the assembled complex structure. Secondly, according to the assembly relationship, the parts assembled with the residual structure are divided into a group of substructures, which are named the first-level substructure, the parts assembled with the first-level substructure are divided into a second-level substructure, and consequently the multi-level substructure model is established. Next, the substructures are dynamically condensed and assembled on the boundary of the residual structure. Finally, the substructure system matrix, which is replicated from the matrix of repeated physical geometry, is obtained by preserving the main modes and the constrained modes and the system matrix of the last level of the substructure is assembled to the upper level of the substructure, one level up, until it is assembled in the residual structure. In this paper, an assembly structure with three panels and a gear box is adopted to verify the method by simulation and a rotor is used to experimentally verify the method. The results show that the proposed multiple and multi-level substructure modeling method is not unique to the selection of residual structures, and different classification methods do not affect the calculation accuracy. The selection of 50% external nodes can further improve the analysis efficiency while ensuring the calculation accuracy.

This paper presents experimental and analytical work of which the main objective was to support the introduction of a new technology for the production of sewer pipes. In this technology, the pipes produced consist of two differently produced parts. The direct part uses conventional vibro press compacted concrete. In the curved part, on the other hand, self-compacting concrete technology is used. The cooperating company, Prefa Brno a.s., defined possible negative effects on concrete of sewer pipes. The task of the research team and now the author’s team was to propose a procedure for the development of suitable self-compacting concrete variants and subsequently the design of a methodology to verify their durability in aqueous environments containing sulfates. To increase the efficiency of the development, the model mortar method was used in the experimental work. That is, instead of the original concrete, a model mortar derived from it was tested. The principle and procedure of derivation of model mortars are described in the paper. In total, eight variants of model mortars were tested, and at least three of them fulfilled the requirements. An optional but beneficial part of the carried out work was the derivation and practical application of the time-anchored-triangles-of-cracking graphical method developed during the research. This method is used to quickly compare the degree of attack of different silicate composites tested in a common bath inducing type III corrosion.

Most object detection methods use rectangular bounding boxes to represent the object, while the representative points network (RepPoints) employs a point set to describe the object. The RepPoints can provide more fine-grained localization and facilitates classification. However, it ignores the difference between localization and classification tasks. Therefore, a lightweight RepPoints with decoupling of the sampling point set (LRP-DS) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the lightweight MobileNet-V2 and Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN) is employed as the backbone network to realize the lightweight network, rather than the Resnet. Secondly, considering the difference between classification and localization tasks, the sampling points of classification and localization are decoupled, by introducing classification free sampling method. Finally, due to the introduction of the classification free sampling method, the problem of the mismatch between the localization accuracy and the classification confidence is highlighted, so the localization score is employed to describe the localization accuracy independently. The final network structure of this paper achieves 73.3% mean average precision (mAP) on the VOC07 test dataset, which is 1.9% higher than original RepPoints with the same backbone network MobileNetV2 and FPN. Our LRP-DS has a detection speed of 20FPS for the input image of (1000, 600), on RTX2060 GPU, which is nearly twice as fast as the backbone network of ResNet50 and FPN. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our method.

The paper deals with problems in the post-implementation phase of management Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Proper management of the system maintenance stage is a basis for efficient system development in terms of business needs. Based on the research and analysis of collected materials, it turns out that making a decision to upgrade the system is equally crucial. We present revealed mechanisms determining the post-implementation approach to upgrade or reimplement the ERP system. The main aim is to determine the methodology and difference understanding to achieve success in the post-implementation stage. The paper shows that the systemic approach to the maintenance stage of the ERP system affects its further decisions: upgrade or reimplement. It has a direct impact on future maintenance costs and the scope of new business demands. This research is an outcome of industry–academia collaboration and based on several developed implementation systems, achieved upgrade and reimplementation projects. Based on case study analysis, we show that reimplementation means an evolution of the current ERP processes rather than another attempt to “reimplement” an unsuccessful system implementation. On the other hand, upgrades are not only a tool or system actualization but the easiest way to bolster company sustainability and to have the information system up to date. The issues discussed in the article will be used to develop changes in the implementation methodology of ERP systems.

Low-carbon economy advances the sustainable development of the transportation of hazardous chemicals. This paper focuses on the multi-trip heterogeneous vehicle routing problem that includes the prioritization of customers and transportation of incompatible cargoes (MTHVRP-PCIC) in which some customers are prioritized for delivery by heterogeneous vehicles and more than one type of cargo is transported. This is an issue because some cargoes are incompatible with each other and therefore cannot be loaded into the same vehicle. MFHVRP-PCIC aims to find a set of routes resulting in minimal costs including fixed cost, travel cost and carbon emission cost. This problem occurs in real-life applications in the hazardous chemicals road transportation industry. This paper contributes to addressing the MTHVRP-PCIC from a problem definition, model, and methodological point of view. We establish a mathematical formulation for this problem. A two-stage hybrid metaheuristic approach (TSHM) is also devised to solve this problem. First, an improved greedy randomized adaptive search procedure is designed to generate initial feasible solutions. Then, a hybrid genetic algorithm including local search strategies, split-feasibility procedure, and simulated annealing is designed to solve this problem. Finally, the proposed approach is applied to solve a real case of hazardous chemical delivery and a benchmark dataset, and the resulting solutions indicate the advantage of our algorithm compared with those solutions obtained from managerial experience and classical algorithms.

High-speed railways (HSRs) are established all over the world owing to their advantages of high speed, ride comfort, and low vibration and noise. A ballastless track slab is a crucial part of the HSR, and its working condition directly affects the safe operation of the train. With increasing train operation time, track slabs suffer from various defects such as track slab warping and arching as well as interlayer disengagement defect. These defects will eventually lead to the deformation of track slabs and thus jeopardize safe train operation. Therefore, it is important to monitor the condition of ballastless track slabs and identify their defects. This paper proposes a method for monitoring track slab deformation using fiber optic sensing technology and an intelligent method for identifying track slab deformation using the random-forest model. The results show that track-side monitoring can effectively capture the vibration signals caused by train vibration, track slab deformation, noise, and environmental vibration. The proposed intelligent algorithm can identify track slab deformation effectively, and the recognition rate can reach 96.09%. This paper provides new methods for track slab deformation monitoring and intelligent identification.

Since continuous motion control can provide a more natural, fast and accurate man–machine interface than that of discrete motion control, it has been widely used in human–robot cooperation (HRC). Among various biological signals, the surface electromyogram (sEMG)—the signal of actions potential superimposed on the surface of the skin containing the temporal and spatial information—is one of the best signals with which to extract human motion intentions. However, most of the current sEMG control methods can only perform discrete motion estimation, and thus fail to meet the requirements of continuous motion estimation. In this paper, we propose a novel method that applies a temporal convolutional network (TCN) to sEMG-based continuous estimation. After analyzing the relationship between the convolutional kernel’s size and the lengths of atomic segments (defined in this paper), we propose a large-scale temporal convolutional network (LS-TCN) to overcome the TCN’s problem: that it is difficult to fully extract the sEMG’s temporal features. When applying our proposed LS-TCN with a convolutional kernel size of 1 × 31 to continuously estimate the angles of the 10 main joints of fingers (based on the public dataset Ninapro), it can achieve a precision rate of 71.6%. Compared with TCN (kernel size of 1 × 3), LS-TCN (kernel size of 1 × 31) improves the precision rate by 6.6%.

The problem analyzed in this paper deals with the classification of Internet traffic. During the last years, this problem has experienced a new hype, as classification of Internet traffic has become essential to perform advanced network management. As a result, many different methods based on classical Machine Learning and Deep Learning have been proposed. Despite the success achieved by these techniques, existing methods are lacking because they provide a classification output that does not help practitioners with any information regarding the criteria that have been taken to the given classification or what information in the input data makes them arrive at their decisions. To overcome these limitations, in this paper we focus on an “explainable” method for traffic classification able to provide the practitioners with information about the classification output. More specifically, our proposed solution is based on a multi-objective evolutionary fuzzy classifier (MOEFC), which offers a good trade-off between accuracy and explainability of the generated classification models. The experimental results, obtained over two well-known publicly available data sets, namely, UniBS and UPC, demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
