Pandemic Biopolitics in Romanian Literature. The biopolitics of the COVID pandemic years has had a powerful impact on all areas of activity, including literature and the arts. Contagion and isolation quickly became the governing terms of social interaction, and writers promptly echoed their impact in works that tried to capture the spirit of the time as it was unfolding. Romanian writers were particularly prompt in responding to the challenges of this unprecedented crisis in modern decades, therefore the first pandemic writings were published in the later months of 2020. Florina Ilis’ Pandemia veselă și tristă (The Happy and Sad Pandemic, Polirom, 2020), Teodor Hossu-Longin’s Măștile din spatele măștii (The Masks behind the Mask, Hyperliteratura, 2022) and collective volumes such as Izolare (Isolation, Nemira 2020) and Jurnal din vremea pandemiei. Proză de grup (Journal from the Times of the Pandemic, Brumar, 2021), edited by Marius Cosmeanu, are just the most visible examples that could be explored in this context. Drawing from theories concerning posthumanism, medical humanities, ethics and contagion, this paper aims to explore the manner in which the pandemic segment of Romanian literature could be integrated into a global literary framework that highlights a diversity of genres and a plurality of voices galvanizing the relationship between the massive effects of the pandemic and narrative art. My paper aims at mapping an emerging literary dialect that gives shape, voice and coherence to a collective experience that has left an indelible imprint on the present and will significantly shape the cultural climate of the near future. Biopolitica pandemică în literatura română. Biopolitica anilor pandemiei COVID a avut un impact puternic asupra tuturor domeniilor de activitate, inclusiv asupra literaturii și artelor. Contaminarea și izolarea au devenit rapid termenii esențiali ai interacțiunii sociale, iar scriitorii au reflectat imediat impactul acestora în lucrări care au încercat să surprindă spiritul vremii pe măsură ce acesta prindea contur. Scriitorii români au fost în mod special prompți în a răspunde provocărilor acestei crize fără precedent în deceniile moderne, astfel încât primele scrieri pandemice au fost publicate în ultimele luni ale anului 2020. Pandemia veselă și tristă a Florinei Ilis (Polirom, 2020), Măștile din spatele măștii de Teodor Hossu-Longin (Hyperliteratura, 2022) și volume colective precum Izolare (Nemira, 2020) și Jurnal din vremea pandemiei. Proză de grup (Brumar, 2021), editate de Marius Cosmeanu, sunt doar cele mai vizibile exemple care ar putea fi explorate în acest context. Bazându-se pe teorii despre postumanism, științe umaniste medicale, etică și contagiune, această lucrare își propune să exploreze modul în care segmentul pandemic al literaturii românești ar putea fi integrat într-un cadru literar global ce evidențiază o diversitate de genuri și o pluralitate de voci dinamizând relația dintre efectele cele mai de ecou ale pandemiei și arta narativă. Lucrarea își propune să cartografieze un dialect literar emergent care dă formă, voce și coerență unei experiențe colective ce a lăsat o amprentă de neșters asupra prezentului și va modela semnificativ climatul cultural al viitorului apropiat. 9. GLOBAL THREADS, UNVEILING UNEVENNESS: CONTEMPORARY MAXIMALIST PROJECTS INTERROGATING CULTURAL HYBRIDISATION AND MARGINALITY

Global Threads, Unveiling Unevenness: Contemporary Maximalist Projects Interrogating Cultural Hybridisation and Marginality. Within a frame that emphasizes the tension between the global and the local, this paper aims to investigate the ways in which complex narratives that incorporate the tropes of migration, periphery, and marginality, amongst others, can bring to light aspects of unevenness and cultural and formal hybridisation. Works like Zadie Smith’s White Teeth, Arundhati Roy’s The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, or Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other employ distinct maximalist modes of inquiry (Nick Levey) to question topics related to inequality, cultural relevance, or representational biases, in a type of novel about which James Wood claimed that it “suffered from an excess of storytelling and an almost paranoid preoccupation with linking up their many subplots in a web of forced meaning.” What stands at the core of this article is precisely this impulse to force a meaning which seems most frequently disrupted by an anarchetypal propensity to renegotiate a “rhetoric of inclusivity” (Franco Moretti) through which the maximalist author tries to exhaustively encompass the whole world (Levey). By selecting a corpus of maximalist novels to illustrate their evolution from the second half of the 20th century until more recent works, such as Evaristo’s, this paper investigates the shift through which these narratives have started to factor margins in, differently and more frequently than in the beginnings of this literary form. Fire globale, dezvăluind inegalitatea: Proiecte maximaliste contemporane care interoghează hibriditatea culturală și marginalitatea. Într-un cadru care evidențiază tensiunea dintre global și local, acest text își propune să investigheze modurile în care anumite narațiuni complexe care încorporează figurile migrației, periferiei și marginalității, printre altele, pot pune în lumină aspecte legate de inegalitate și de hibridizarea culturală și formală. Cărți precum Dinți albi de Zadie Smith, Ministerul fericirii supreme de Arundhati Roy sau Fată, femeie, alta de Bernardine Evaristo folosesc moduri de investigare maximaliste specifice (Nick Levey) pentru a aduce în discuție subiecte legate de inegalitate, relevanță culturală sau biasuri de reprezentare, într-un tip de roman despre care James Wood susținea că „suferă de un exces al povestirii și de o preocupare aproape paranoică de a lega numeroasele intrigi secundare într-o rețea de sens forțat”. Miza principală a acestui articol vizează tocmai acest impuls de a forța un sens care pare cel mai frecvent perturbat de o tendință anarhetipică de a renegocia o „retorică a incluziunii” (Franco Moretti) prin care autorul maximalist încearcă să cuprindă într-un mod exhaustiv întreaga lume (Levey). Selectând un corpus de romane maximaliste cu scopul de a ilustra evoluția lor din a doua jumătate a secolului XX până la opere mai recente, precum cea a lui Evaristo, această lucrare investighează schimbarea prin care aceste narațiuni au început să țină cont de margini într-un mod diferit și mai frecvent decât la începuturile acestei forme literare. Exploring Framework Bias: The Case of Minimalism Vs Parallel Architecture in Studies on Language Evolution. The present paper explores the issue of framework bias through the analysis of two lines of study concerning language evolution, one framed by the Minimalist program and one by the proposal of Parallel Architecture of language. Framework bias, as proposed in this study, raises the question of the degree to which the theoretical framework chosen for a certain line of research will influence the design of an experiment, the selection of data, and therefore the analysis and final results. The studies presented in this paper tackle the same topic (language evolution) using the same parameters for research (gradual versus saltational evolution; continuation versus exaptation; and unique versus shared property) but reach significantly different conclusions because of their respective theoretical framework. O explorare a influenței cadrului teoretic asupra rezultatelor cercetării: Programul Minimalist vs Arhitectura paralelă a limbajului în studii despre evoluția limbajului. Lucrarea de față explorează problema bias-ului creat de cadrul teoretic prin analiza a două linii de cercetare asupra evoluției limbajului, una centrată pe programul minimalist, iar cealaltă pe teoria arhitecturii paralele a limbajului. Bias-ul de cadru teoretic, astfel definit în lucrarea de față, ridică problema măsurii în care cadrul teoretic ales pentru o cercetare influențează design-ul unui experiment, alegerea corpusului de analiză, și implicit analiza în sine și rezultatele aferente. Studiile prezentate în această lucrare abordează aceeași temă (evoluția limbajului) folosind aceiași parametri de cercetare (evoluție graduală vs saltațională; continuare vs exaptare; și proprietate unică sau comună) dar ajung la concluzii semnificativ diferite din cauza cadrului teoretic ales de fiecare studiu în parte. 11. CHALLENGING THE PALATE AND THE MIND. INTRODUCING WESTERN BAKING VOCABULARY INTO CHINESE

Challenging the Palate and the Mind. Introducing Western Baking Vocabulary into Chinese. Starting from the first Western recipe book published in China in 1866, the paper analyzes the attempts to translate Western bakery vocabulary into Chinese. Although the Chinese cuisine was already very rich and refined, with a complex vocabulary, dessert had never been an integral part of a traditional meal, and, in fact, there was no specific word for it. After China’s defeat in the two Opium Wars, in the mid-19th century, the increasing foreign presence on Chinese soil meant both an increase in demand for cooks able to satisfy the dietary needs of the Westerners, and of restaurants serving Western food, especially in cities with foreign concessions, like Shanghai, where dining in such a place had become very “modern”. Zao yang fan shu (Foreign Cookery in Chinese) compiled and translated by Martha Foster Crawford, and published at The American Presbyterian Mission Press, in Shanghai, in 1866, was the first Western recipe book to be translated into Chinese. Out of the 271 recipes, 139 are desserts. Considering the resistance of the Chinese language to loanwords, especially phonetic loans, the paper looks at the solutions employed by Crawford to translate the new vocabulary, find out when were the phonetic loans used and how were they transcribed, if it was possible to identify equivalents in Chinese for the new terms, which terms were translated as semantic loans, and which are still in use today. Provocarea gustului și a minții. Pătrunderea vocabularului de patiserie occidentală în China. Pornind de la prima carte de bucate occidentale publicată în China în 1866, lucrarea de față propune o analiză a transpunerii vocabularului patiseriei occidentale în limba chineză. Deși în momentul publicării cărții, bucătăria chineză era deja extrem de bogată și rafinată, cu un vocabular complex, desertul nu era parte dintr-o masă tradițională și nu exista un termen care să definească acest fel. După înfrângerea Chinei în cele două Războaie ale opiului, prezența tot mai numeroasă a occidentalilor pe teritoriul chinez a făcut ca cererea de bucătari capabili să satisfacă cerințele culinare ale străinilor și numărul restaurantelor care serveau mâncare occidentală să crească, mai ales în orașele cu concesiuni străine, precum Shanghai, unde servitul mesei în restaurante occidentalizate devenise o modă. Prima carte de bucate occidentale în limba chineză, Zao yang fan shu (Rețete occidentale în chineză), a fost tradusă și editată de Martha Foster Crawford, în 1866, publicată la Editura Misiunii Prezbiteriene Americane, din Shanghai. Dintre cele 271 de rețete, 139 sunt deserturi. Luând în considerare rezistența limbii chineze la împrumuturi, mai ales la cele fonetice, lucrarea de față analizează soluțiile folosite de Crawford pentru a reda în chineză vocabularul de patiserie, când și de ce au fost preferate calcurile fonetice, cum au fost ele transcrise, dacă a fost posibilă identificarea unor termeni echivalenți din vocabularul culinar chinez pentru felurile de desert incluse în carte, când s-a folosit calcul semantic și care dintre termenii propuși de autoare mai sunt încă în uz. This paper aims to examine the (re)construction of the female subject in contemporary autobiographical fiction by looking into Sașa Zare’s debut novel, Dezrădăcinare. Drawing on feminist and postfeminist theory as well as research on self-writing centred on women’s inscription of personhood in their works, this study attempts to investigate the relationship between the narrator and the narrated self, focusing on the negotiated distance between the two fictional constructs. This analysis will build on concepts such as metatextuality, autotheory, performativity, and on Lacanian and post-Lacanian feminist means of understanding the self as a product of societal and cultural discourse (as opposed to the idea of a unified self), by centring on the narrative techniques that show the narrator’s perception of herself, and struggle to represent different parts of her identity (the writer, the daughter, the girlfriend, the student and the therapy patient). As language plays an important part in rendering the feminine subject’s fragmented vision of her identity, this paper will highlight the role of personal and societal narratives in constructing an idea of the self.

Published during a period of transition from “the epistemological or cognitive” to the “affective dimension of fiction”, to use Catherine Gallagher’s conceptualization of the progress of the mid-eighteenth-century novel, The History of Miss Betsy Thoughtless is often read as a story of development from “thoughtless coquette” to “thoughtful wife”. With these two social roles in the background, this paper sets forth to examine the affective and emotional development of Betsy Thoughtless through a close reading of her reactions to scenes of suffering and forms of aggression. The claim of the paper is that Miss Betsy’s history progresses as her empathy and capacity to internalize potentially traumatic events grow, which invites sympathetic identification.

14. REVISITING NORSE MYTHOLOGY: THE CASE OF A.S. BYATT’S RAGNARÖK

In 2011, British author and Booker-prize winner A. S. Byatt publishes Ragnarök, her rewriting of the Norse myth about the death of the gods. Seen through the eyes of a thin child who is forced to witness the terrors of World War II, the story and characters of the Norse myth are reinterpreted and retold in accordance with the child’s vision, imagination and feelings. The paper here focuses on the association of the Scandinavian imaginary with specific moments in A. S. Byatt’s personal history, and highlights the use of certain patterns and ideas that are present in both, trying to pinpoint the elements that make possible the transformation of the mythical into the actual. The aim of this study is to explore the evolution of the mythological events as they are rewritten in Byatt’s 21st century book, in close connection with the main character’s personal development. To that end, the paper will also dwell upon the comparison drawn by Byatt herself between the Norse and the Christian mythological imaginary – a vision filtered through the eyes and thoughts of the focalizer of the text, the thin child.

Setting up a Creative Writing Program at Babeș-Bolyai University. The present paper argues for the establishment of a Creative Writing program within Babeș-Bolyai University, by initially providing more courses at the BA level, with an MA in Creative Writing being the end goal. By examining the history of the field and its current status within higher education in America, the UK and beyond, I show that, wherever Creative Writing programs have appeared and gained sufficient traction, they have thrived, attracting significant numbers of students year after year. In those countries outside of Anglophone space where the implementation of Creative Writing is a much more recent endeavor, significant steps have already been taken to analyze and find solutions for the current issues that might slow down the spread of interest in this field. With this in mind, the paper concludes that it is time for Babeș-Bolyai University to embrace this growing trend. REZUMAT. Înființarea unui program de scriere creativă în cadrul Universității Babeş-Bolyai. Lucrarea de față pledează pentru înființarea unui program de Scriere Creativă în cadrul Universității Babeș-Bolyai, prin oferirea inițial de mai multe cursuri la nivel de licență, având ca scop final un Masterat în Scriere Creativă. Examinând istoria domeniului și statutul său actual în învățământul superior din America, Marea Britanie și nu numai, arăt că, oriunde au apărut programele de Scriere Creativă și au avut un pic de succes, acestea au prosperat, atrăgând un număr semnificativ de studenți an de an. În acele țări din afara spațiului anglofon în care implementarea Scrierii Creative este un demers mult mai recent, au fost deja făcuți pași semnificativi pentru a analiza și găsi soluții pentru problemele actuale care ar putea încetini răspândirea interesului în acest domeniu. Având în vedere acest lucru, lucrarea concluzionează că este timpul ca Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai să îmbrățișeze această tendință în creștere. The discourse marker eso sí in Spanish and its correspondences in Portuguese. This paper analyzes the correspondences of eso sí in Portuguese. In the first part, the predominant values of this discursive marker in Spanish are studied and its evolution from the 16th century to the present is determined. Then, the most common values as a discourse marker of isso sim are analyzed (the literal correspondence of eso sí) in current Portuguese, also establishing its evolution in the history of Portuguese until its grammaticalization as a discourse marker in the 19th century. In the second part of the paper, a contrastive analysis is carried out between these two discourse markers, establishing the convergences and divergences, according to three parameters: i) the values; ii) the position in the statement; iii) the explicitation of the negation in the sentence before the one in which the discourse marker is integrated. In the final part of the article, the correspondences of eso sí in fourteen Portuguese translations of narrative works in Spanish are presented, and their acceptability is analyzed according to the predominant value of eso sí. REZUMAT. Marcatorul discursiv eso sí în spaniolă și corespondențele sale în portugheză. Această lucrare analizează corespondențele lui eso sí în limba portugheză. În prima parte, sunt studiate valorile predominante ale acestui marcador discursiv în spaniolă și este determinată evoluția sa din secolul al XVI-lea până în prezent. Apoi, sunt analizate cele mai frecvente valori ca marcador discursiv ale lui isso sim (corespondentul literal al lui eso sí) în portugheza actuală, stabilindu-se, de asemenea, evoluția sa în istoria limbii portugheze până la gramaticalizarea sa ca marcador discursiv în secolul al XIX-lea. În partea a doua a lucrării, se realizează o analiză contrastivă a acestor doi marcadori discursivi, stabilindu-se convergențele și divergențele, în funcție de trei parametri: i) valorile; ii) poziția în enunț; iii) explicitarea negației în propoziția anterioară. În partea finală a articolului, sunt prezentate corespondențele lui eso sí în paisprezece traduceri portugheze ale unor opere narative în limba spaniolă, iar acceptabilitatea acestora este analizată în funcție de valoarea predominantă a lui eso sí. The guest editor(s), together with the journal’s editor(s) in charge of the special-themed issue, first select the submissions according to their relevance to the topic. Submissions passing the initial editorial screening enter the double-blind peer review process. As a rule, this involves the anonymous evaluation of each submission by 2 external referees (from outside both Babeş-Bolyai University and the institution to which the author of the article is affiliated) identified as specialists in the respective academic area. The review of the submissions is done: - through elaborate comments on the text, which allow the reviewers to freely and constructively express their suggestions, criticisms, and appreciations. - by filling the peer-review form that evaluates the following aspects: the clarity of the title and its appropriateness to the content of the manuscript, • the way in which the abstract captures the content of the manuscript, • whether the introductory section outlines the relevance of the article for the given field, offers a good overview of previous studies on the same topic, and presents a clearly formulated thesis, • whether the paper has a solid and well-informed theoretical background, relevant for the analysis/ argumentation, • the originality of the paper and the significance of its contribution to the field, • how the concluding section summarizes the results and the consequences/implications, • the quality and relevance of references, • appropriate citation and referencing, • stylistic and grammatical accuracy. The reviewer’s decision materializes in one of the three possible recommendations, namely: acceptance in the initial form, conditional acceptance (minor/ moderate/ major changes in form, style and/or content), or rejection. The activity of Romanian users in digital spaces oftentimes exhibits a dynamic code containing Romglish (the combination of Romanian and English features), which also reverberates in offline discourses and has an ongoing boomerang effect between offline and online interactions. By means of a survey, this paper investigates the Romanian collective imaginary which is set in the linguistic data. As the Romanian language constitutes a matrix in which English and Globish (a simplified pragmatic form of English) are embedded and they become part of a new dynamic code, destined to be changed at all levels (lexical, morphological, and syntactical), Romanian native speakers’ perception of Romglish is an important dimension. As such, this paper will analyse how individuals perceive their personal use of Romglish online and in face-to-face interactions: the use of the code created, the preferences and mechanisms of linguistic choices and linguistic creativity, the frequency of code-switching and code-mixing both in formal and informal contexts, and the degree of universality of the code used. The findings will provide insight not only specific to the aspects of the Romglish, but also related to the cognitive processes involved and the reasons which trigger such processes.

Ionescu-Ionesco, Voice of an Exile? Proposal for a Theoretical Rereading. In this paper, we propose a different reading of Eugène Ionesco’s exile by drawing from a selection of texts from the 1930s and afterwards. As our purpose is to challenge the prevailing discourse surrounding the topic, we have opted to focus on critical and theoretical elements rather than biographical details. We keep in mind that the author’s contributions and the research on his work are two intertwined discourses. In post-1989 Romania, Ionesco is widely regarded as one of the leading literary figures of the Romanian exile. It is our opinion that his exiled status has not been sufficiently investigated, and our aim is to demonstrate that prudence and close reading could uncover some striking nuances that could lead scholars to the solution of a central question: Should Ionescu-Ionesco be regarded as an exile or rather as an expatriate? Ionescu-Ionesco, vocea unui exilat? Propunere pentru o relectură teoretică. În articolul de față propunem o lectură diferită a exilului lui Eugène Ionesco bazându-ne pe o selecție de texte din anii 1930 și de mai târziu. Întrucât scopul nostru este să chestionăm discursul predominant legat de subiect, am ales să ne concentrăm mai curând asupra elementelor critice și teoretice decât asupra detaliilor biografice. Ținem cont de faptul că contribuțiile autorului și cercetarea relativă la opera sa sunt două discursuri întrețesute. În România de după 1989, Ionesco este îndeobște considerat drept o figură literară marcantă a exilului românesc. Opinia noastră este aceea că statutul său de exilat nu a fost suficient investigat, iar obiectivul nostru este să demonstrăm că prudența și lectura atentă pot dezvălui nuanțe remarcabile: ar trebui Ionescu-Ionesco să fie tratat drept un exilat sau mai degrabă drept un expatriat? A(n) (Anarche)Typical Journey through New York: Don Delillo’s Cosmopolis as an American Postmodern Odyssey. Journeys made across the North American territories were often made in search of something: a better life, a further frontier space or the lifestyle and the bigger opportunities from the other coast. Other times, mostly towards the second half of the 20th century, these journeys were made out of the sheer pleasure of travelling, having no pre-established routes and allowing themselves to drift endlessly and leave rhizomatic traces on America’s map. In the case of Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis, these two types of geographical narratives overlap in Eric Packer’s chaotic limousine ride across New York, through which he tries to reach his hairdresser but is forever delayed by various things happening on the streets. Through an in-depth geocritical analysis of why the quintessence of the 21st century’s American space proves to be unnavigable in straightforward and ordered ways anymore, this paper will use Corin Braga’s “anarchetype” to define this type of movement and also to link it to the multiple and decentred identity of the postmodern subject. In addition, the protagonist’s journey through Manhattan will be seen as a postmodern odyssey where the destination eludes the traveller to the point in which the journey’s meaning does not even depend on it anymore. O călătorie (anarhe)tipică prin New York. Odiseea americană postmodernă a lui Don DeLillo în Cosmopolis. Călătoriile prin teritoriile nord-americane au fost deseori făcute în căutare de ceva: o viață mai bună, un spațiu de frontieră mai întins sau stilul de viață și oportunitățile mai mari de pe cealaltă coastă. Alteori, mai ales în a doua jumătate a secolului al XX-lea, aceste călătorii au fost făcute din simpla plăcere de a călători: neavând rute prestabilite, ele lasă urme rizomatice pe harta Americii și se mișcă în derivă de-a lungul acesteia. În cazul romanului Cosmopolis de Don DeLillo, aceste două tipuri de narațiuni geografice se suprapun în plimbările haotice ale lui Eric Packer cu limuzina prin New York, prin care acesta încearcă să ajungă la frizerul său, dar este mereu blocat de diverse lucruri care se întâmplă pe străzi. Printr-o analiză geocritică aprofundată a motivelor pentru care chintesența spațiului american al secolului XXI dovedește imposibilitatea navigării sale în mod direct și ordonat, această lucrare va folosi conceptul de „anarhetip” al lui Corin Braga pentru a defini acest tip de mișcare și, de asemenea, pentru a-l lega de identitatea multiplă și descentrată a subiectului postmodern. În plus, călătoria protagonistului prin Manhattan va fi văzută ca o odisee postmodernă în care destinația își pierde treptat din importanță până la punctul în care sensul călătoriei nu mai depinde deloc de ea. Listening and Legibility: Urban Surfaces Against “Overarching Meanings” in Lispector’s The Besieged City. This paper looks into the literary dismantlement of projections of totality and objectified knowledge in women’s modern writing, focusing on Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector’s novel The Besieged City. My central claim is that her writing opposes “geographies of reason,” indirectly arguing for an untranslatability of the self inside modernity’s model of legibility and communication. In this novel, Lispector’s alternative to the discoursing, male-dominant, rational public realm is not the introspective inner space of subjectivity, but an innovative world-making poiesis founded on the substitution of the individual self with “the wider life of the world” that remains always a-centric and anti-textual. I investigate the ways in which Lispector opposes opaqueness to legibility, seeking the uncharted territory outside the logic of historical time or the colonial gaze. Reading Lispector’s novel through the notion of “writing by ear” (bearing multiple meanings, mostly in relation to the re-negotiation of the voice-dominant Western perception about writing) will prove useful in understanding the intricate and tangled relation between Euro-American literature and the Global South in terms of complex forms of heritage hybridization and designs of global memory. Ascultare și lizibilitate: Suprafețe urbane împotriva „semnificațiilor globale” în The Besieged City de Lispector. Acest articol investighează destructurarea proiecțiilor unei „totalități” și a cunoașterii obiective în scriitura modernistă feminină, cu focus pe romanul scriitoarei braziliene Clarice Lispector The Besieged City (Orașul asediat). Argumentul central se construiește pe ideea că scriitura sa se opune unor „geografii ale rațiunii,” demonstrând intraductibilitatea sinelui în interiorul modelului de lizibilitate și comunicare al modernității. În acest roman, alternativa scriitoarei la sfera publică raționalizată și discursivizantă nu este spațiul introspectiv al subiectivității, ci un poiesis al construirii de lumi, clădit pe substituirea sinelui individual cu „viața mai cuprinzătoare a lumii” care este anti-textuală și acentrică. Mă interesează modurile prin care Lispector opune opacitatea lizibilului, căutând „ținutul” neexplorat dinafara logicii timpului istoric și a privirii coloniale. Citind romanul lui Lispector prin conceptul de „scriitura cu urechea” (noțiune ce negociază percepția vestică asupra scrisului, dominată de ideea de „voce”) vom înțelege relațiile complexe dintre literatura euro-americană și cea a Sudului Global, cu atenție față de formele de hibridizare a memoriei în designul global. Apuleius’ Metamorphoses. 1. The Archetypal Initiation Pattern. In this paper I apply a concept I have coined and defined – the anarchetype – to the ancient Greek and Latin novel, more specifically to Apuleius’ Metamorphoses. The text suffers, in my view, from the tension between two contrary formal tendencies, one which is archetypal, another which is anarchetypal. The first structural constraint is the archetypal one. In contrast to the popular narrative Onos, that Apuleius takes as his epic source, The Golden Ass receives a strong organizing pattern, that of an initiation journey. Transformed by mistake, within a sorcery ritual, into an ass, Lucius suffers a series of adventures and encounters with different mystery and philosophical cults (Dea Syria, Dionysos, Isis, Medio-platonism) which bring him back to the human, and then divine condition. This rite of passage offers an archetypal structure to the novel. Metamorfozele lui Apuleius. 1. Modelul arhetipic al inițierii. Doresc în acest studiu să aplic un concept pe care l-am creat și l-am definit – cel de anarhetip – romanului grec și latin antic, cu precădere Metamorfozelor lui Apuleius. În opinia mea, textul e marcat de tensiunea dintre două tendințe formale contrare, una arhetipală cealaltă anarhetipală. În această primă parte a studiului voi analiza tendința structurală arhetipală. În contrast cu povestirea populară Onos din care se inspiră Apuleius, Măgarul de aur primește din partea autorului un pattern structural puternic, cel al călătoriei inițiatice. Transformat din greșeală, în cadrul unui ritual vrăjitoresc, într-un măgar, Lucius trece printr-o serie de aventuri și întâlniri cu diferite culte de mistere și filosofice (Dea Syria, Dionysos, Isis, medio-platonism) care îl aduc înapoi la condiția umană și apoi la cea divină. The volume explores changes in meaning negotiation processes and intercultural communication and diachronic contexts. The issues are tackled from an interactional and pragma-rhetorical standpoint, but key components of the studies also comprise interdisciplinarity, cultural anthropology, and social psychology. This volume's papers are organized into six sections. The first section examines stancetaking in political and judicial discourse. A few online communicative forms represent the object of the second section. In the third section, the focus is stancetaking in conversation, as well as in fiction. In the fourth section, stancetaking is examined diachronically, taking into account its various oral and written discourses. In the fifth section, stancetaking is discussed in the framework of intercultural communication, while in the last section, the studies examine it from an applied linguistics perspective.

Translation solutions for dealing with ambiguity in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This paper shows how different types of ambiguity embedded in the matrix of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (the 1993 edition) are dealt with in two prestigious Romanian translations – Frida Papadache’s Peripeţiile Alisei în Ţara Minunilor (1976) and Antoaneta Ralian’s Alice în Ţara Minunilor (2007) – as a tribute to the international appeal of Alice. My focal aim is to present a comparative analysis of the methods employed in translating Carroll’s equivocal lexical items, which make it increasingly difficult to match grammatical categories with function. This paper also aims at describing disambiguation techniques applied primarily in determining if the two translators managed to reinforce the original textual leeway at their disposal in the pure spirit of Carroll. My analysis relies heavily on Dirk Delabastita’s translation strategies as precautionary measures to cope with Carroll’s specialized type of literary discourse. The findings submitted by this paper are consistent with the idea that translating Carroll’s craft unavoidably entails a partial loss of meaning, brought about by the yawning gap between the intended message and interpretation, which can result in either overtranslation or undertranslation. The extensive use of double-entendre in the source-text cannot be recoded entirely in the target language, despite the translators’ excellent command of English. Acest articol arată că modul în care diferitele tipuri de ambiguitate încadrate în matricea textuală a lui Lewis Carroll în Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (ediția din 1993) sunt tratate în două traduceri românești de vază – Peripețiile Alisei în Țara Minunilor (1976), tradusă de Frida Papadache, și Alice în Țara Minunilor (2007), tradusă de Antoaneta Ralian – aduce un omagiu notorietății internaționale de care se bucură Alice. Scopul acestui articol este să prezinte o analiză comparativă a metodelor alese în traducerea termenilor echivoci care împiedică formarea corespondenței formă-funcție. Un alt obiectiv rezidă în descrierea tehnicilor de dezambiguizare aplicate pentru a determina în ce măsură traducătoarele au împrumutat, în manieră carrolliană, atmosfera lingvistică a textului-sursă, având în vedere strategiile de traducere propuse de Dirk Delabastita ca măsuri de precauție în explorarea discursului specializat al lui Carroll. Constatările acestei lucrări arată că încercarea de a-l traduce pe Carroll inevitabil implică omisiuni lexicale cauzate de distanța mare dintre mesajul scriptic livrat de autor și interpretarea ulterioară. Aceasta duce, în cele din urmă, fie la supratraducere, fie la subtraducere. Exploring Liminal Aesthetics: The “Glitchy and Decayed” Worlds of Vaporwave, Semiotic Assemblages, and Internet Linguistics. The topic of online identity formation in the realm of computer-mediated communication is nothing new. However, what does stand out, especially in recent years, in the larger framework of Internet-based sociolinguistic practices (David 2010; Williams 2006), is a much-needed exploration of various new microcultural aggregates. Some of these niche-genres are frequently encountered on YouTube, while others are primarily short-lived Instagram or TikTok community-driven trends. In essence, this paper states the belief that it is precisely these relatively contemporary microcultural trends that manage to accurately take the pulse of a new, post-pandemic world. Moreover, since many of these forms of artistic self-expression can be understood through a Cultural Sociolinguistic lens (Cotrău, Cotoc, and Papuc 2021), a translation of their particular symbolic meanings can only help decipher the increasingly chaotic, hypersubjective, and “semiotic assemblages” (Pennycook 2017) that individuals seem to be inhabiting and creating. Thus, the current paper aims to offer an analysis that ties together an array of only seemingly disparate elements, namely: cultural economy, creation and consumption of online cultural artefacts, and an affective processing that ties real-life traumatic events to the creation of particular cultural trends - liminal aesthetics and vaporwave, paired with a fascination with all things “glitchy and decayed” (Loignon and Messier 2020). Subiectul formării identității online în cadrul comunicării mediate de computer nu este neapărat unul inedit. Cu toate acestea, ceea ce se remarcă, mai ales în ultimii ani, în contextul mai larg al practicilor sociolingvistice digitale (David 2010; Williams 2006), este necesitatea explorării îndeaproape a unor noi și varii agregate microculturale. Unele dintre aceste genuri de nișă sunt des întâlnite pe platforma YouTube; iar altele iau forma trendurilor de scurtă durată, tipice comunităților utilizatoare de Instagram sau Tik-Tok. În esență, tema principală a lucrării de față sugerează importanța acestor trenduri microculturale contemporane, ele constituind exact instrumentele de analiză prin care se poate lua cu mai multă acuratețe pulsul unei lumi emergente, cea postpandemică. De asemenea, datorită faptului că multe dintre aceste forme de exprimare artistică pot fi înțelese prin prisma unei abordări cultural-sociolingvistice (Cotrău, Cotoc, and Papuc 2021), traducerea sensurilor particulare propuse de acestea poate doar ajuta în descifrarea „asamblajelor semiotice” (Pennycook 2017), tot mai haotice și hypersubiective ce par a fi concretizate și create, în mediul digital. Astfel, în cadrul lucrării de față se oferă o analiză ce urmărește să aducă laolaltă elemente doar aparent disparate, și anume: economia culturală, crearea și consumul de artefacte culturale online și o procesare afectivă ce face legătura între evenimente resimțite în viața reală ca având un impact traumatic și realizarea compensatorie de trenduri culturale particulare. Astfel, se remarcă în principal predilecția pentru estetica liminalității și genul vaporwave, alături de o vizibilă fascinație față de tot ce este „inexact și degradat” (Loignon and Messier 2020). A Storm in Pandemic Times. The Terminological Syntagm ‘Cytokine Storm’ in the Scientific Discourse of Popularisation in Romanian. The object of this contribution is the occurrence of the terminological syntagm cytokine storm (Rom. furtună de citokine) in various excerpts of Romanian scientific discourse of popularisation with reference to the Covid-19 pandemic and/or the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The terminological analysis of the syntagm cytokine storm is limited to a selection of four fragments which have appeared in recent Romanian mass-media discourse. In these fragments, both physicians and journalists specialised in medical science have been asked to explain the cytokine storm anti-inflammatory reaction, which seems to have caused the death of many people during the Covid-19 pandemic. The fragments of popularisation discourse have been selected from interviews broadcast at TV stations or from articles posted on medical websites or in health sections in the online press. As a result of the phenomenon known as the scientific vulgarisation, the corresponding discourse is closely linked to the democratisation of knowledge, in which both mass-media and education play an important part. Moreover, the discourse of popularisation takes into account not only the addresser, but also the addressee of a certain message. In order to make the layman addressee correctly decode the scientific (and terminological) notions, the specialist needs to render the specialised message in a more simplified and easy-to-understand manner. Therefore, the paper aims to highlight the different linguistic means which have been used by various addressers to deliver the necessary explanations for the cytokine storm reaction, so that the non-specialised addressees could understand what the syntagm itself exactly denotes. Furtună în vremea pandemiei. Sintagma terminologică furtună de citokine în discursul de vulgarizare științifică din limba română. Obiectul acestei lucrări este apariția sintagmei terminologice furtună de citokine în diverse fragmente din discursul științific românesc de popularizare, cu referire la pandemia de Covid-19 și/sau la virusul SARS-CoV-2. Analiza terminologică a sintagmei furtună de citokine se limitează la o selecție de patru fragmente apărute în discursul recent al mass-mediei românești. În aceste fragmente, atât medici, cât și jurnaliști specializați în domeniul medical au încercat să explice reacția antiinflamatoare denumită furtună de citokine, care pare să fi cauzat moartea multor persoane în timpul pandemiei de Covid-19. Fragmentele discursive de vulgarizare științifică au fost selectate din interviuri difuzate la posturi de televiziune, precum și din articole postate pe site-uri medicale sau în rubrici de sănătate din presa online. Ca urmare a fenomenului cunoscut sub numele de vulgarizare științifică, discursul corespunzător este strâns legat de democratizarea cunoașterii, în care mass-media, dar și educația joacă un rol important. În plus, discursul de popularizare ia în considerare nu numai emițătorul, ci și destinatarul unui anumit mesaj. Pentru ca destinatarul profan să decodeze corect noțiuni științifice (și terminologice), specialistul trebuie să redea mesajul specializat într-o manieră mai simplificată și mai ușor de înțeles. Prin urmare, lucrarea își propune să evidențieze diferitele mijloace lingvistice care au fost folosite de o serie de emitățori în oferirea de explicații pentru apariția furtunii de citokine, astfel încât destinatarii nespecializați să poată înțelege ce anume denotă sintagma în sine. Considerations on Legal, Sworn and Court Translation. This paper departs from the premise that translation represents a type of intercultural communication, reflecting on the different systems of law in order to depict the characteristics of legal language (mainly in Spanish), comparing Common Law and Civil Law. After analyzing the functionality of legal texts and their compared translations into Spanish and Romanian, we deduce that there is a close link between the legal language that derives from each culture and the society from which it originates. Conceptual differences and similarities between legal, sworn and judicial translation are also explored, with the aim of finding elements that can support the interpretation of legal value and wider related areas, which must respect the requirements of form and content. Moreover, we discuss the legal load in the source and target text, in accordance with written, oral and other specific factors to legal language. Some complex translation issues arising from semantic, lexical, syntactic, phraseological, formal and generic difficulties are also touched upon. Last but not least, we aim to highlight some typologies of legal texts, according to their role, mode, tone, genre, effect, which also implies a practical delimitation of legal, sworn and Court translation. Considerații privind traducerea juridică, autorizată și judiciară. Această lucrare pleacă de la premisa că traducerea este o formă de comunicare interculturală, reflectând asupra diferitelor sisteme de drept pentru a ajunge la caracteristicile limbajului juridic (în principiu în limba spaniolă), comparând Common Law și Dreptul Civil. După analiza funcționalității textelor legale și a comparației între traducerilor lor în spaniolă și română, deducem că există o legătură strânsă între limbajul juridic ce caracterizează fiecare cultură și societatea din care provine. De asemenea, se studiază diferențele și asemănările conceptuale între traducerea juridică, autorizată și judiciară, cu scopul de a găsi elemente care pot sprijini interpretarea valorii legale și a altor domenii conexe mai ample, aspecte care trebuie să respecte exigențele legate de formă și de conținut. În același timp, se discută încărcătura juridică din textul sursă și din textul țintă, în concordanță cu factorii nivelului scris, oral și cu alții specifici limbajului juridic. Totodată, se ating unele chestiuni complexe de traducere ce decurg din dificultăți semantice, lexicale, sintactice, frazeologice, formale și generice. În final, ne propunem să evidențiem câteva tipologii ale textelor juridice, în funcție de rolul, modul, tonul, genul, efectul lor, ceea ce implică și o delimitare practică a traducerilor juridice, autorizate și judiciare. Neological Tendencies in the Spanish Gastronomic Terminology. The present paper aims to identify and analyse the neological tendencies in the contemporary Spanish gastronomic terminology, from the angle of term formation. The phenomenon of globalization has privileged the circulation of goods, culinary products, cooking techniques, along with the specific vocabulary related to the gastronomic field. Thus, the gastronomic terminology is being enriched with new items, especially loanwords taken from other languages. Our study is based on a corpus of Spanish newspaper articles on gastronomy topics, in which we have identified a fair amount of neologisms. The second phase of the study consisted of contrasting the identified neologisms with dictionaries and linguistic corpora (CORPES XXI) in order to establish their novelty. In our corpus, apart from the prevailing number of Anglicisms (dumpling), we can also identify a great deal of lexemes borrowed from languages such as Japanese (ramen), Chinese (jiaozi), Korean (kimchi), Arabic (shakshuka), Greek (tzatziki), Turkish (imam bayildi) etc. Also, some of these latter lexemes were borrowed indirectly, via English. The other mechanisms of term formation, namely derivation (comidista), compounding (gastroturista) and resemantization (bikini, 'sandwich'), are less productive and representative, as the number of neologisms formed by these means is significantly lower. Regarding the graphic, phonetic and morpho-syntactic adaptation to the Spanish language, the analysed neologisms present various degrees. The conclusions of this research highlight the adaptability of the Spanish language, its permeability and ability to integrate new lexical items, also demonstrated by the inclusion of many neologisms and foreign words in the academic dictionary of general usage. In addition, our study reveals that a great number of neologisms are not adopted out of designative or semantic necessity, but they rather reflect a linguistic fashion, as well as the need for novelty and stylistic expressiveness. Tendințe neologice în terminologia gastronomică spaniolă. Studiul de față își propune să identifice și să analizeze tendințele neologice care se manifestă în terminologia gastronomică spaniolă actuală, din perspectiva formării termenilor. Fenomenul globalizării a favorizat circulația mărfurilor, a produselor culinare, a tehnicilor de preparare, precum și a vocabularului specific domeniului gastronomic. Astfel, terminologia gastronomică se îmbogățește cu elemente noi, mai ales prin intermediul împrumuturilor din alte limbi. Studiul nostru se bazează pe un corpus format din articole de presă pe teme de gastronomie, din care am selectat un număr semnificativ de neologisme, confruntate, în a doua etapă a studiului, cu o serie de dicționare și corpora de texte (CORPES XXI) cu scopul de a stabili statutul de neologism. În corpusul investigat, în afară de anglicismele prevalente (dumpling), putem întâlni un număr important de împrumuturi din limbi precum japoneza (ramen), chineza (jiaozi), coreeana (kimchi), araba (shakshuka), greaca (tzatziki), turca (imam bayildi) etc. De asemenea, și unele dintre acestea din urmă au fost preluate pe cale indirectă, pe filieră engleză. Celelalte procedee de îmbogățire terminologică, cum ar fi derivarea (comidista), compunerea (gastroturista) și resemantizarea (bikini, ‘sandviș’), sunt mai puțin productive și reprezentative, numărul de neologisme formate prin intermediul lor fiind semnificativ mai redus. Cât privește adaptarea grafică, fonetică și morfo-sintactică la sistemul limbii spaniole, neologismele analizate prezintă diverse grade. Concluziile la care a condus prezenta cercetare pun în evidență adaptabilitatea limbii spaniole, permeabilitatea și capacitatea de a integra elemente lexicale noi, fapt demonstrat și de includerea multor neologisme și xenisme în dicționarul academic de uz general. De asemenea, s-a putut constata că o seamă de neologisme nu sunt adoptate dintr-o necesitate designativă ori semantică, ci reflectă mai degrabă o modă lingvistică, precum și nevoia de noutate și expresivitate stilistică. The eighteenth century is not only the Age of Reason but also a great age of feeling, in which sensations, emotions, feelings and affects redefine both the relationship between the human and the natural environment and the relationship between the self and the social, or the self and itself. If the “sensitive soul” shapes a new moral ideal, it also points out the importance of a human faculty which does not oppose reason, but complements it. In this paper I wish to explore the questions posed by the “rise of feeling” in the eighteenth-century French novel and the way in which it impacts upon a general understanding of the “human machine” and human nature. In this respect, I intend to propose a re-reading of two famous novels of the time, i.e. Montesquieu’s Lettres persanes and Choderlos de Laclos’s Liaisons dangereuses. Based upon recent research on the history of sensibility and emotions, our study examines the way in which sensibility promotes new fictional forms and norms of emotional behavior intended to open a debate on human nature. The conclusion that I will draw is that the French novelists of the time, even those who seemed less “sentimental” (such as Montesquieu) or less “philosophical” (such as Prévost or Laclos), did not ignore the then contemporary philosophical debates on sensibility and human nature, but tackled them from a more experimental angle by imagining fictional characters whose disturbed sensibility served to question the limits between the human, the non-human and the inhuman.

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) was an ardent believer in individual freedom and self-development; consequently, she frequently discussed the possibilities of women’s education and self-reliance in her writings. Being rather reckless in her life, she was often on the move, not only searching for better life conditions but also following her own impulses in her critical reading. The motif of intellectual mobility features her educational writings, argumentative works, novels, and her last publication, Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway and Denmark (1796) as well. In my paper, I will map the multiplicity of the concept of mobility and elaborate on the senses of escapism in Wollstonecraft’s travel-letters, moving beyond Laurence Sterne’s notion of “a sentimental journey” (A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, 1768). Moreover, in Letters, in her solitary walks and fanciful reveries, not only Wollstonecraft’s inclination to the (natural and textual) sublime but also Rousseau’s ideas on exercise and movement will be detected (cf. Reveries of the Solitary Walker, 1782). On the one hand, my interpretation is contextualised by the late-eighteenth-century view on women’s limitations of “sensibility”, displaying the constraints the age demanded; on the other hand, I intend to place the travelogue in Mary Wollstonecraft’s oeuvre and highlight the synthesising quality of the writing as a piece of “travail” and/or “a labour of love”.

Towards a Decentralized Literature. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the History of Contemporary Romanian Literature by Mihai Iovănel opens new paths both in interpreting literature and towards understanding Romanian cultural identity at large. In this sense, “transnational specificity,” as Iovănel calls it, becomes a most resourceful field that allows, as Vancea shows, important insights into national and global identity in the context of significant technological developments. In the same vein, Vancea draws from Daniel David’s work on the psychology of the Romanian people to highlight new cultural aspects that could lead to changes in literature. At the same time, the paper tries to bring humanities closer to the perspectives that the Web3 phenomenon announce. Precarity and Healing: On the Role of Grief in Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones (1998). Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones (1998) is a fictional account of the undocumented Parsley massacre of 1937, when black Haitian migrant workers were killed by Rafael Trujillo’s government in the Dominican Republic. The paper places the novel in the African diasporic tradition of writing about the traumatic past, with the Parsley massacre being one such traumatic event of Haitian diasporic writing. The paper highlights the critical problem that unlike most post-colonial fiction, this Haitian diasporic story about gaining voice and agency fails to provide a satisfactory therapeutic valence or an explanation for individual suffering. The paper proposes an application of Judith Butler’s concept of precarity in order to reconsider the problem of healing the wounds of the past in Danticat’s novel. For Butler, social relationality makes subjects vulnerable within the social structure they inhabit, but this vulnerability may also carry a potentiality for the experience of social vulnerability to be shared in makeshift acts of solidarity. The paper claims that precarity does have a limited potential in the novel, which can be detected through the analysis of the water imagery. Amabelle Désir, the protagonist, is already living a precarious life before the Parsley massacre, but the brutality to which she is subjected isolates her socially even more afterwards. She is unable to bear her testimony, living in the past, mourning her lost lover. The representation of precarity in the novel’s water imagery indicates that making contact with her former employer in 1961 brings a momentary sense of connection and community that enables her to commit suicide eventually. This element of truncated healing can be read as the limited potential of precarity available in the Haitian diasporic context. The Farming of Bones (1998) de Edwidge Danticat e o relatare ficțională a masacrului din Parsley, rămas nedocumentat, unde în 1937 muncitori haitieni migranți au fost uciși de guvernul lui Rafael Trujillo în Republica Dominicană. Lucrarea plasează romanul în tradiția diasporică africană a scriiturii despre trecutul traumatic, masacrul din Parsley fiind un asemenea eveniment traumatic în literatura diasporică haitiană. Studiul evidențiază problema critică a faptului că, spre deosebire de majoritatea ficțiunilor post-coloniale, această poveste diasporică haitiană a găsirii unei voci și a unei posibilități de acțiune nu reușește să furnizeze o valență terapeutică satisfăcătoare sau o explicație a suferinței individuale. Lucrarea propune aplicarea conceptului de precaritate al lui Judith Butler pentru a repune în discuție problema vindecării rănilor trecutului în romanul lui Danticat. Pentru Butler, relaționarea socială face subiecții vulnerabili în structura socială pe care o populează, însă această vulnerabilitate poate avea și un potențial, în sensul că experiența vulnerabilității sociale poate fi împărtășită în acte improvizate de solidaritate. Lucrarea afirmă că precaritatea are un potențial limitat în roman, fapt ce poate fi detectat prin analiza imaginilor apei. Amabelle Désir, protagonista, trăiește o viață precară deja înainte de masacrul din Parsley, însă brutalitatea la care este supusă o izolează social și mai mult ulterior. Ea nu este în stare să-și aducă mărturia, trăiește în trecut, deplângându-și iubitul mort. Reprezentarea precarității în imaginile apei din roman indică faptul că luând legătura cu fostul ei angajator în 1961 îi provoacă eroinei un sentiment trecător de conexiune și comunitate care îi permite să se sinucidă în cele din urmă. Acest element de vindecare trunchiată poate fi interpretat ca potențial limitat al precarității disponibil în contextul diasporic haitian. Lions and She-Wolves: Kingship, Queenship and the Legitimacy of Power in Shakespeare’s Historical Plays. A recent collection of studies about Shakespeare and animals (Raber and Dugan 2021) cogently points out that the playwright’s bestiary is so charged symbolically and metaphorically that these nonhuman creatures rarely speak for themselves. However, the benefit of (Shakespeare’s) animal studies lies in the intersectional framework, specifically, for the purposes of this paper, the discussion about the structures of power and subjugation with the combined tools of gender studies and animal studies, as theorized a few decades ago by Adams and Donovan (1995). Starting from the shared scope of these areas of research, the present paper discusses gender relations and the stratification of power described in Shakespeare’s historical plays by means of a quantitative and qualitative analysis of specific animal imagery. While the lion is a recurrent symbolic animal evoked in these plays with reference to kingship, bearing positive connotations of legitimate power, he is often contrasted with the wolf, symbolizing usurpation, misrule, lack of legitimate authority. The she-wolf, although mentioned only once, is evoked in order to suggest an equally stark contrast, between male (and native) kingship and female (and foreign) queenship. Drawing on Elizabeth Norton’s (2009) and Helen Castor’s (2011) use of this animal phrase to address the relevance of female sovereignty in medieval and early modern England, our paper discusses how the choice of animals and the number of occurrences in Shakespeare’s Henriad reflects the early modern perceptions about (monstrous) female rule. Lei și lupoaice: regalitate masculină, suveranitate feminină și puterea legiuită în piesele istorice ale lui Shakespeare. Într-un volum recent dedicat studiilor shakespeariene și animalelor (Raber și Dugan 2021) se arată că bestiarul dramaturgului englez este atât de încărcat, metaforic și simbolic, încât ființele non-umane arareori vorbesc în nume propriu. Dar ceea ce aduc studiile despre animale în opera lui Shakespeare este abordarea intersecțională, în special, cu relevanță pentru studiul de față, discutarea structurilor de putere și subjugare cu metodele specifice studiilor de gen și studiilor despre animale, așa cum au fost acestea dezvoltate în ultimii ani de Adams și Donovan (1995), de pildă. Inspirându-se din discursul comun al acestor discipline, lucrarea abordează relațiile de gen și stratificarea puterii din piesele istorice shakespeariene prin analiza cantitativă și calitativă a unor imagini specifice legate de animale. Leul este animalul cel mai frecvent evocat în legătură cu regalitatea, cu conotații pozitive, de putere legitimă, așezat adesea în contrast cu lupul, care semnifică uzurparea, lipsa ordinii și a autorității legiuite. Lupoaica, deși menționată o singură dată, are menirea de a face un contrast la fel de izbitor, între regalitatea masculină (și pământeană) și suveranitatea feminină (și venetică). Pornind de la sensul dat lupoaicei în cărțile lui Elizabeth Norton (2009) și Helen Castor (2011) în legătură cu regalitatea feminină în Anglia medievală și a modernității timpurii, lucrarea de față demonstrează cum, prin alegerea animalelor și frecvența evocării lor, Henriada lui Shakespeare reflectă percepția epocii față de conducerea feminină, percepută adesea ca fiind monstruoasă. “I had become a cow”: Kimura Yūsuke’s Sacred Cesium Ground and Robert Moore’s Figuring Ground. This paper shows how Kimura Yūsuke’s Sacred Cesium Ground (2016; translated 2019) and Robert Moore’s Figuring Ground (2009) expose the biopolitical manipulation of humans and animals thereby demonstrating the possibility of transcending narrow species boundaries. These authors both employ literary techniques such as humorous absurdism, embracing madness, and cultivating activism, while at the same time engaging with the ethical questions raised by critical animal studies. Of particular importance for the comparative discussions of Kimura and Moore’s texts will be Donna Haraway’s identification of herself as a philosopher of the “mud” and her derision of the philosophy of the “sky” or the abstraction employed by Deleuze and Guattari. This paper likewise employs Carol J. Adams’s ideas of the shared absent referent in meat eating and pornography and the development on this thought in Nicole Shukin’s theory of rendering. This paper moreover draws attention to the rupture created through the violence of the slaughterhouse and the slaughter of cattle following 3/11 in Japan to show the suffering of animals and the necessity of acknowledging the shared experience of species. Robert Moore’s Figuring Ground and Kimura Yūsuke’s Sacred Cesium Ground thus allow for the movement from the historical capitalist preoccupation with cattle as commodity to an understanding of cows as part of a trans-species community. Articolul de față urmărește modul în care Sacred Cesium Ground de Kimura Yūsuke (2016; trad. 2019) și Figuring Ground de Robert Moore (2009) dezvăluie manipularea biopolitică a oamenilor și animalelor, demonstrând astfel posibilitatea de a transcende limitele înguste dintre specii. Autorii utilizează amândoi tropi literari cum ar fi absurdul umoristic, adoptarea nebuniei și cultivarea activismului, abordând totodată probleme etice semnalate de studiile critice despre animale. De o importanță specială pentru discutarea comparată a textelor lui Kimura și Moore este modul în care Donna Haraway se auto-identifică drept filozof al „glodului” și luarea în derâdere a filozofiei „cerului” sau abstracției utilizate de Deleuze și Guattari. De asemenea, lucrarea cooptează ideile lui Carol J. Adams despre referentul comun absent în consumul de carne și în pornografie, și dezvoltările acestei concepții în teoria redării a Nicolei Shukin. Lucrarea mai atrage atenția asupra rupturii create prin violența abatoarelor și masacrarea vitelor după dezastrul din 3/11 din Japonia pentru a evidenția suferința animalelor și necesitatea de a accepta experiența comună a speciilor. Cele două cărți facilitează trecerea de la preocuparea capitalistă istorică față de șeptel ca marfă spre o înțelegere a bovinelor ca parte a unei comunități trans-specie. The paper aims to investigate, through the perspective of the recent new materialist turn in the humanities, the island imaginary in Northern Norway. The research will revolve around Roy Jacobsen’s Barrøy-serien, a series of four books which depict the islands of Northern Norway. The whole world of the islanders seems to be encircled and ultimately enclosed by water. The title of the first volume in the series (The Unseen) points directly toward the socio- and geopolitical invisibility of the inhabitants of the little island, who seem to be outside any social system, living their life off the grid. Islands have been often portrayed in literature as such isolated microcosms, objects of colonial gaze and desire, powerless and inert. However, in Barrøy-serien, Roy Jacobsen seems to break this pattern, by ascribing agency to nonhuman (and more-than-human) systems like the island or the ocean. The story of the protagonist Ingrid seems to slowly become the story of the Barrøy island itself, which is never just the backdrop of human action and intention, but a force that has the power to shape human destinies. I argue that these narratives allow nonhuman entities like the island and the ocean independence and autonomy, acknowledging their enmeshment in human life.

Ellen Einan (1931–2013) is a Norwegian poet known for her frequent use of innovative language that forms fixed expressions, codes or references to both religious and mythical rituals and symbols. She builds her imagery on folk beliefs, Eastern religions and old ancient myths and she weaves all this together into a fantastic poetic universe with its own mythology. In the present paper, I examine the possibility of reading her poems as an expression of the creation of fiction in lyric poetry. I consider the creation of fiction to be an extension of the creation of images (connected to the term “the imaginary”), where we acquire images and their interconnections with a fiction-constitutive power. In this view, Einan not only constructs images (or symbols), but also a new, fictional existence in her poems. My approach to Einan's work is closely linked to the fictional world theory and its use within the discourse of lyric poetry, as it is presented in the theoretical work of Miroslav Červenka. He assumes that the lyrical subject is at the centre of the fictional world of the poem and assigns a character-like position to it. Furthermore, I read Einan's complete oeuvre as an interconnected universe, as the thematic criticism proposes, and focus on how the recurring motifs and themes can enable us to identify Einan's fictional world.

In Old Norse literature, dwarfs are first and foremost known as remarkable smiths and producers of weapons and other valuable, magic objects. Both gods and human protagonists need those products. However, dwarfs do not usually sell their products, neither to gods nor to humans. The closest thing to a sale contract is found in Sǫrla þáttr eða Heðins saga ok Hǫgna, a short narrative found in the Flateyjarbók manuscript. Here, Freyja intended to buy an exceptionally beautiful necklace, from the dwarfs, and offered them gold and silver in exchange for it. However, the dwarfs would only sell it to her in exchange for one night spent together and Freyja accepted the trade. But how can you make sure you get what you need from a dwarf if you do not happen to be Freyja? In this paper, I provide some case studies that seem to indicate a pattern. The most powerful gods, such as Óðinn, may issue a direct order, while less powerful beings, as Loki or Freyja, need to manipulate the dwarf into wanting to provide them the desired item. Human protagonists are able to manipulate dwarfs by exploiting the fact that the dwarfs reciprocate help and generosity. However, if someone attempts to treat dwarfs as servants, when, in reality, they do not have the same power over them as the mighty gods do, they risk severe retribution from the dwarf.

Without claiming to be exhaustive, this article compares the different aquatic figures of Scandinavian imagination, and the representations relating to Scandinavia, taking into account their cosmic aspect. This paper highlights the close connection of these creatures with time, weather and music, and the evolution of the representation of sea creatures that embody geography and climate, real or fantasized. These representations evolve, especially because of the important Christianization process that they undergo. With Christianization, these sea creatures tend towards demonization, and they’re influenced by Occidental representations, especially with those of the sirens of the Nibelungenlied. Scandinavian aquatic figures represent different dangers according to the type of water in which they live: salty, soft or marshy. According to their gender, the marine creatures which embody different risks are put in perspective in a comparative approach that links the Eddas and the stories reported by Xavier Marmier, especially Danish and Swedish. Thanks to the privileged bond these figures, emerging from the Edda, sagas and ballads, maintain with speech and music, their evolutions and their representations survive in the collective imagination related to Scandinavia.

The present paper explores the current situation of the English language used in Norway, as rendered by different articles published by Aftenposten, a Norwegian newspaper of significant circulation. The countries’ English language skills are annually tested, and according to the 2022 Education First’s English Proficiency Index, Norway is ranked number four in the world, with very high skills. Nowadays, English is used in schools, at higher education institutions, at work, but English words are more and more used in Norwegian in everyday life especially by teenagers. This leads to a mixture of English and Norwegian known as norsklish. The newspaper articles present various opinions about the level of English proficiency required in different fields, the influence of norsklish on the language of youth, and even the need for Norwegians to improve their English language skills. The influence of the English language on the speech of different generations in Norway varies, as each generation has had different exposure and experiences with this language. Norwegians are moreover exposed to a wide variety of language variants given the fact that they have two official written norms (Bokmål and Nynorsk) and quite many dialects, which are used in various aspects of the public life. Fields such as research, higher education, international business may be seen as threatened by the use of English mostly because there is a clear lack of terminology in Norwegian.

The current paper aims to present the didactic use of the Norwegian concrete poems. The concept of concrete poetry will be approached through Jan Erik Vold’s literary perspective as the promoter of concretism in Norway. In order to prove the effectiveness of these poems in the teaching process, a survey was conducted including a questionnaire with closed-ended and open-ended questions. The respondents were 1st- and 2nd- year students of BA in Norwegian language and literature and a group of 3rd-year students from The Centre for Language Industries, enrolled at the Faculty of Letters, at Babeș-Bolyai University. This research aimed at the effectiveness of using Vold’s concrete poems when teaching specific language structures in Norwegian. Thus, a survey was done at the end of one semester of experiment when I used Jan Erik Vold’s concrete poems for my students during my Norwegian language courses and seminars. The results showed that especially during these seminars students read, analyse and design concrete poems in Norwegian, including grammatical and typographical poems, ready-mades, tongue twisters and nursery-rhymes-like poems, in order to better understand and to revise a specific grammatical, syntactic or lexical structure in Norwegian.

The markedness principle in Brazilian Portuguese verb-based discourse markers viu? and entendeu?. A productive, vigorous debate on grammar issues took place as the new millennium approached. A significant amount of work was published in that field as we witnessed a grammatical boom between 1991 and 2014 in Brazil (Faraco and Vieira 2016). Along with a resulting new range of descriptive perspectives and propositions, the debate over discourse markers (DMs) relevance has increased sharply among language curriculum professionals. Although they have played an important role in functionalist grammars where interaction is a key component, DMs are still regarded as a peripheral category in natural language normative grammars. Also, DMs are typically associated with language users’ social status. Based on cognitive-functionalist grammar studies, my research has placed DMs on the common ground between a functionalist framework (by investigating the relationship between form and content) and cognitive linguistics theory (categorization, prototypicality, conceptual metaphors). This paper explores some of my research findings on the markedness principle as applied to Brazilian Portuguese DMs viu? and entendeu? in the light of cognitive-functionalist theories. Some contrast between these DMs and their English equivalent is also explored. In doing so, I hope to bring forward new resources to explore verb-based DMs in teaching Portuguese to speakers of other languages. REZUMAT. Principiul de marcare în cazul marcatorilor discursivi verbali din portugheza braziliană viu? și entendeu?. O dezbatere productivă și viguroasă pe teme gramaticale a avut loc odată cu apropierea noului mileniu. O cantitate semnificativă de lucrări a fost publicată în acest domeniu, asistând la un boom gramatical între 1991 și 2014 în Brazilia (Faraco și Vieira 2016). Împreună cu o nouă serie de perspective și propuneri descriptive rezultate, dezbaterea privind relevanța marcatorilor discursivi (MD) a crescut brusc în rândul profesioniștilor în curriculum lingvistic. Deși au jucat un rol important în gramaticile funcționaliste în care interacțiunea este o componentă cheie, MD sunt încă considerați o categorie periferică în gramaticile normative ale limbii naturale. De asemenea, MD sunt de obicei asociați cu statutul social al utilizatorilor de limbi străine. Pe baza studiilor de gramatică cognitiv-funcționalistă, cercetarea mea a plasat MD pe terenul comun definit de un cadru teoretic funcționalist (prin investigarea relației dintre formă și conținut) și teoria lingvisticii cognitive (categorizare, prototipicalitate, metafore conceptuale). Această lucrare explorează unele dintre rezultatele cercetării mele privind principiul marcării aplicat MD viu? și entendeu? din portugheza braziliană în lumina teoriilor cognitiv-funcționaliste. De asemenea, sunt explorate unele contraste între acesti MD și echivalentul lor în limba engleză. În acest fel, sper să aduc noi perspective pentru a explora MD deverbali în predarea limbii portugheze pentru vorbitorii de alte limbi. Pois: discursive and interactional properties of a Portuguese discourse marker translated into Italian. In this paper we intend to present the study of the Portuguese discursive marker pois to emphasise the various discursive and interactional possibilities. This discursive connector is included by Lopes e Carrilho (2020) among the explanatory discursive markers: the lexical element takes the form of an operator with anaphoric value that proposes the part of discourse that follows it as an explanation of the part of discourse that precedes it. Part of this semantic value is also found in the pois with an interactional function of response. This phenomenon could be explained by considering the process of semantic drift that sees the expansion of the discursive space of use of a lexical element. To present the various areas of use of the discursive marker pois, written and oral language data will be examined. In addition, a contrastive analysis with Italian will be proposed based on the possible translations that this discourse marker can have in this language in order to broaden the contrastive studies between the two Romance languages. REZUMAT. Pois: proprietăți discursive și interacționale ale unui marcator discursiv portughez tradus în italiană. În această lucrare ne propunem să studiem marcatorul discursiv pois (portugheză europeană), pentru a sublinia diferitele sale posibilități discursive și interacționale. Acest conector discursiv este inclus de Lopes e Carrilho (2020) în categoria marcatorilor discursivi explicativi: elementul lexical ia forma unui operator cu valoare anaforică ce propune partea de discurs care îl urmează ca explicație a părții de discurs care îl precedă. O parte a acestei valori semantice se regăsește și în pois cu funcție interacțională de răspuns. Acest fenomen ar putea fi explicat prin prisma procesului de derivă semantică care cuprinde extinderea spațiului discursiv de utilizare a unui element lexical. Pentru a prezenta diferitele domenii de utilizare ale marcatorului discursiv pois, vor fi examinate date de limbă scrisă și orală. În plus, se va propune o analiză contrastivă cu limba italiană, bazată pe posibilele traduceri ale acestui marcator discursiv, pentru a îmbogăți studiile contrastive între cele două limbi romanice. Contributions for the description and translation of the discourse marker ainda por cima in contemporary European Portuguese. Based on a cognitive-functional framework, this paper analyses the different uses of the discourse marker ainda por cima in contemporary European Portuguese and, in a second step, its translation into Spanish, French, English, and German. This analysis is based on data collected in two corpora, CETEMPúblico, which allowed the identification of the functions of the marker in European Portuguese, and Europarl, for the listing of its translations. The research carried out in the source language reveals that the marker has an elaborative value, and more specifically an additive value, always associated with an element of unexpectedness, prefacing a new argument that reinforces the conclusion to be reached, which may (or may not) be the strongest argument in an argumentative scale. The contrastive analysis, in turn, shows the great variety of translational solutions adopted and a value not mentioned in any of the monolingual analyses: the counter-argumentative. The text concludes that (i) the different meanings of the marker in Portuguese are quite close and present themselves in a continuum, linked by family resemblances; (ii) there are important challenges in translating DM; (iii) the analysis of translations may require a reinterpretation of the DM in the source text. REZUMAT. Contribuții pentru descrierea și traducerea marcatorului discursiv ainda por cima în portugheza europeană contemporană. Pe baza unui cadru cognitiv-funcțional, această lucrare analizează diferitele utilizări ale marcatorului discursiv ainda por cima în portugheza europeană contemporană și, într-o a doua etapă, traducerea acestuia în spaniolă, franceză, engleză și germană. Această analiză se bazează pe date colectate în două corpusuri, CETEMPúblico, care a permis identificarea funcțiilor marcatorului în portugheză, și Europarl, pentru identificarea traducerilor. Cercetarea efectuată în limba sursă relevă faptul că marcatorul are o valoare elaborativă și, mai precis, o valoare aditivă, asociată întotdeauna cu un element ce exprimă neașteptarea, prefațând un nou argument, care întărește concluzia la care se va ajunge, care poate fi (sau nu) cel mai puternic argument dintr-o scală argumentativă. Analiza contrastivă arată, la rândul ei, marea varietate de soluții de traducere adoptate și o valoare care nu este menționată în niciuna dintre analizele monolingve: contra-argumentativul. Textul concluzionează că (i) diferitele sensuri ale marcatorului în portugheză sunt destul de apropiate și se prezintă într-un continuum, fiind legate prin asemănări de familie; (ii) provocările pe care le ridică traducerea MD sunt semnificative; (iii) analiza traducerilor poate necesita o reinterpretare a MD din textul sursă. Multifunctionality of discourse marker portanto in Braga’s Speech. This paper explores the multifunctionality and usage patterns of the discourse marker portanto in Braga’s speech. Our main goal is to propose a revised description of portanto, while acknowledging the validity of previous research on the topic. The investigation focused on the co-occurrence of functions associated with portanto, emphasizing its pivotal role in speech construction. The frequency distribution of portanto usage was found to be consistent with earlier studies, affirming its most prevalent application as a filler (marker). Our study also highlighted that an excessive use of discourse markers can create the illusion of coherence, rather than genuinely ensuring it, especially in contexts characterized by frequent pauses, verbal hesitations, and syntactic interruptions. Furthermore, this research examined the influence of discourse genre on portanto’s usage patterns. Notably, the two predominant uses observed in Braga’s speech were linked to specific aspects of sociolinguistic interviews, particularly the recollection of life stories and features of spontaneous speech. The findings enrich our understanding of this discourse marker's multifaceted role in facilitating coherent communication and its significance in various speech contexts. REZUMAT. Multifuncționalitatea marcatorului discursiv portanto în graiul din Braga. Acest articol explorează multifuncționalitatea și modelele de utilizare ale marcatorului discursiv portanto în graiul din Braga. Scopul nostru principal este să propunem o descriere revizuită a marcatorului portanto, recunoscând în același timp validitatea cercetărilor anterioare. Cercetarea noastră s-a concentrat asupra co-ocurenței funcțiilor marcatorului portanto, care subliniază rolul esențial al acestuia în coeziunea discursului. Distribuția frecvenței utilizării lui portanto s-a dovedit a fi în concordanță cu studiile anterioare, confirmând că cea mai frecventă utilizare este de marcator. Studiul nostru a subliniat, de asemenea, că utilizarea excesivă a marcatorilor discursivi poate crea iluzia coerenței, fără însă a o asigura cu adevărat, mai ales în contexte caracterizate de pauze frecvente, ezitări verbale și discontinuități sintactice. În plus, cercetarea noastră a examinat și influența genului discursiv asupra modelelor de utilizare ale marcatorului portanto. Cele două utilizări predominante observate în graiul din Braga au fost influențate de aspecte specifice ale interviurilor sociolingvistice, în special nararea poveștilor de viață și trăsăturile discursului spontan. Concluziile noastre contribuie la înțelegerea rolului multifațetat al acestui marcator discursiv în facilitarea comunicării coerente și clarifică sensurile sale în mai multe contexte. Positionings of Terézia Mora between 1999 and 2014. The aim of my paper is to reconstruct the positionings of Terézia Mora (German-writing author of Hungarian descent) in the literary field. Self-positioning in interviews and positioning by literary criticism and various institutions, bodies of the literary public are examined in the article. Also, the differences between various positionings in German and Hungarian literary fields will be discussed. Questions using Bourdieu's literary sociology are posed in the paper. It also builds on research results which could be obtained from the study of Mora's work on the basis of Link's sociology of literature. This noteworthy initiative serves the important purpose, in our opinion, of giving an international visibility to Romanian linguistic research that may otherwise find itself confined to the frontiers of the Romanian language. The papers included in this volume are signed by well-established researchers, such as Andra Vasilescu, Ariadna Ștefănescu, Liana Pop or Margareta Manu Magda, but also by linguists belonging to what we might call the younger generation of Romanian pragmaticians and discourse analysis scholars.

The prevalence of digital communication has made it imperative to study the linguistic practices and patterns unique to these digital spaces. As becomes apparent in An Introduction to Internet Linguistics, the impact of the internet on language use is far-reaching. Digital arenas have not only influenced the way individuals communicate but also engendered new ways of constructing identities and interacting with others. As such, Internet Linguistics has become an increasingly popular area of study for linguists of various academic backgrounds and fields. As posited in the Foreword of An Introduction to Internet Linguistics, the volume attempts to shed light on the interdisciplinary ways language and communication are changing in response to the digital age, by drawing upon frameworks from established theoretical fields such as sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and semiotics. In order to achieve this, the volume has been organized into three main sections: an introductory theoretical study designed as an overall guideline and introduction to the field of Internet linguistics, a compilation of invited papers from established academics and a case-study section comprised of contributions from both graduate as well as doctoral students.
