This article seeks to contribute to the discussion about the role of online media in cases of public interest, in this case a financial political scandal (Thompson, 2001). For this, it was inquired into how it becomes visible (Thompson, 2001 & 2005), through Twitter, the link between the presidential candidate Sebastián Piñera and the scandal over tax havens, in particular, the case of the ‘Panama Papers’. The months of the presidential candidacy were set as the time limit, concluding in the first round of the presidential elections in Chile (between March 21 and November 19, 2017). It was concluded that on Twitter the scandal is visible through three main acts: discredit, face and take position, and two secondary acts, placed between them: unmask and federate. In this sense, social networks allow us to establish a space for questioning current democracies, for interaction with other “traditional” communication media, and ultimately to debate issues that affect citizens, as in this case the creation of Companies in tax havens by a former president and current presidential candidate. As Cardon (2010) points out, Internet expands the public space, transforming the nature of democracy.

Similar to many other countries, journalistic production in China during the first half of 2020 was dominated on a thematic level by the COVID-19 pandemic. The trend included the mouthpiece of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Renmin Ribao. Its news and commentary articles, which are widely republished by other media, influence the country’s political life, and contribute to the process of meaning generation in the news discourse and to the CCP’s effort to align Chinese citizens to official narratives. Renmin Ribao can therefore provide a relevant source to investigate the relationship between political power and the COVID-19 pandemic, starting from the hypothesis that the paper’s narrative would aim at discursively turning the international health crisis into a piece of positive propaganda. This study aims to verify whether and how the paper did so, and to question the assumption that the outlet’s media discourse can be equated to the CCP official discourse. The research is developed as a case study and blends quantitative and qualitative tools grounded on Applied Linguistics, Discourse-Historical Approach, and Frame Analysis, in order to analyse a corpus of commentaries that have appeared in the outlet’s online edition in 2020. By applying a Genre Analysis approach, the study also offers insights into the possibility to identify distinguishing characteristics and communicative goals in the different sub-genres of Renmin Ribao commentaries.

Abstract The study extends the conversation on the effect that co-authorship has on the citation impact of papers by analyzing the short-term advantage of co-authored papers. The results suggest that co-authored papers have a higher short-term impact than single-authored ones in all scientific domains. The study adds insights on the use of the immediacy index as an alternative indicator to evaluate the short-term competitive advantage of co-authored papers concerning the number of citations they attract. Furthermore, the study shows the efficacy of the immediacy index in comparing the short-term impact of different groups.

Este texto apresenta reflexões sobre as narrativas científicas veiculadas nos resumos socializados no GT 20 – Psicologia da Educação das cinco últimas reuniões da Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Educação – ANPEd Centro-Oeste. Orienta-se pelo diálogo com a Teoria das representações sociais, destacando a relação dos processos comunicacionais e os themata de base como modos de se pensar a circulação e a produção do pensamento social. O eixo interpretativo privilegiou a antinomia individual-coletivo e seu potencial gerador de ambientes de pensamento no âmbito da psicologia escolar e educacional. A metodologia consistiu na análise de conteúdo de 75 títulos, seguido da análise lexical dos 45 resumos das comunicações orais, com apoio do software Iramuteq. As narrativas científicas difundidas ancoraram-se na perspectiva psicossocial, orientada pela oposição dialética do thema individual-coletivo. Destacaram-se os debates propostos pelas Teoria histórico-cultural, Teoria das representações sociais e Teoria crítica, em diálogo com a sociologia, a antropologia e a filosofia. Observou-se a interdependência entre diferentes instâncias da realidade, privilegiando investigações sobre cultura, ideologia e produção de subjetividades; aprendizagens e práticas pedagógicas; formação de professores, condições concretas de trabalho e adoecimento docente e processos comunicacionais e significações por diferentes atores sociais envolvidos na cena educacional. No puede negarse que los llamados a publicar o Call For Papers (CFP), utilizados de manera sistemática por las llamadas revistas “depredadoras”, son importantes para las revistas de excelencia y las de segundo orden que recurren a estos anun¬cios para sus ediciones regulares, temáticas y conmemorativas. En este artículo, se exponen los resultados de una encuesta realizada en 2016 a 199 editores de revistas científicas colombianas de áreas como Ciencias Naturales, Ingeniería y Tecnología, Ciencias Médicas y de la Salud, Ciencias Agrícolas, Ciencias Sociales, Humanidades y Multidisciplinarias. 143 de las revistas estudiadas (75%) tienen una periodicidad semestral; 53 editores participantes suelen usar los anuncios de CFP con el objetivo de llamar artículos para sus ediciones regulares. De ellos, 30% (114) de los editores utiliza el sitio web de la revista para difundir sus anuncios de CFP y el 29,5% (111) el correo electrónico. Sin embargo, 66 editores no respondieron a qué tan efectivos resultaron estos anuncios para atraer artículos, al no poder determinar el porcentaje de recibidos que fueron publicados = It cannot be denied that the call for papers (CFP), used in a systematic way by the ‘predatory’ journals, are important for journals of excellence and second-class ones that turn to these announ¬cements for their regular, themed and commemoratives editions. In this article we show the results of a survey carried out in 2016 to 199 editors of Colombian scientific journals of areas such as Natural Science, Engineering and Technology, Medical Scien¬ces, Agricultural Sciences, Humanities, and Multidisciplinary Sciences. The 75% (143) of the studied journals have a biannual regularity. 37.7% (53) of the editors usually use the CFP announcements to call for articles for their regular editions. 30% (114) of the editors use the journal’s web page to issue their CFP announcements and 29.5% (111) use the e-mail. Nonetheless, 66 editors could not answer how effective were these announcements to draw articles, because they could not define the percentage of the material received that was finally published.

Esta reflexión constituye una indagación, a cuatro manos y dos corazones, sobre la práctica de la escritura académica, las lógicas, contradicciones, presupuestos y posibilidades para el surgimiento de un pensamiento auroral, esto es, para el florecimiento de un pensamiento del amanecer en tiempos de pandemia. Una reflexión alrededor de cuatro cuestiones vinculadas al proceso de escritura de “papers”. This reflection constitutes an inquiry, carried out by four hands and two hearts, into the practice of academic writing: its logics, contradictions, presuppositions, and the possibilities for the emergence of an auroral form of thought, that is, to enable a thought of dawn to bloom in the midst of a pandemic and widespread devastation, which also includes scientific devastation. At the same time, this article is also a reflection on four issues related to the process of writing papers.

Patients with the dual burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) experience unacceptably high rates of morbidity and mortality, which also entail unfavorable effects on healthcare systems. Currently, concerted efforts to identify, prevent and treat CVD in CKD patients are lacking at the institutional level, with emphasis still being placed on individual specialty views on this topic. The authors of this position paper endorse the need for a dedicated interdisciplinary team of subspecialists in cardio-nephrology that manages appropriate clinical interventions across the inpatient and outpatient settings. There is a critical need for training programs, guidelines and best clinical practice models, and research funding from nephrology, cardiology and other professional societies, to support the development of the subspecialty of cardio-nephrology. This position paper from the coordinating committee from the Working Group for Cardiorenal Medicine of the Spanish Society of Nephrology (S.E.N.) is intended to be the starting point to develop the subspecialty of cardio-nephrology within the S.E.N.. The implementation of the subspecialty in day-to-day nephrological practice will help to diagnose, treat, and prevent CVD in CKD patients in a precise, clinically effective, and health cost-favorable manner. Resumen: Los pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica (ERC) que presentan enfermedad cardiovascular (ECV) tienen índices de morbilidad y mortalidad inaceptablemente elevados, que impactan desfavorablemente sobre los sistemas de salud. En la actualidad, se requieren actuaciones multidisciplinares para identificar, prevenir y tratar la ECV en los pacientes con ERC, debiendo pues superarse la época de las actuaciones de las especialidades individuales. Los autores de este artículo respaldan la necesidad de un equipo interdisciplinar de subespecialistas en cardionefrología que gestione las intervenciones clínicas adecuadas en el entorno hospitalario y en el ambulatorio. Existe una gran necesidad de programas de formación, de guías y modelos de práctica clínica, y de fondos para la investigación en las sociedades de nefrología, cardiología y otras, para apoyar el desarrollo de la subespecialidad de cardio-nefrología. Este documento de opinión del comité coordinador del Grupo de Trabajo de Medicina Cardiorenal de la Sociedad Española de Nefrología (S.E.N.) pretende ser el inicio del desarrollo de la subespecialidad de Cardionefrología en el marco de la S.E.N. La implementación de la subespecialidad en la práctica nefrológica diaria contribuirá a diagnosticar, tratar y prevenir la ECV en los pacientes con ERC de una manera precisa, clínicamente efectiva y sanitariamente rentable.

In the mid 1920s, Virginia Woolf was engaged in a dispute with the American critic Logan Pearsall Smith on “the ethics of writing articles at high rates for fashion papers”. Harper’s Bazaar, a commercial magazine to which Woolf contributed four short stories between 1930 and 1939, was a feminine periodical that exploited modernism’s distinction and high cultural capital to captivate a sophisticated, but essentially middle-class, readership by selling the illusion of upward cultural mobility. Although Woolf referred to her high-quality contributions to Harper’s Bazaar as “pot boiling stories for America” written “to make money”, it seems clear that her own engagement with a middlebrow publishing venue did not in the least affect her reputation as a highbrow intellectual and was indeed typical of the multifaceted, reciprocal relationship between the magazine and high modernism in a context in which mobility also meant redrawing the boundaries between intellectual and popular culture. The publication of modernist content within the glossy pages of Harper’s Bazaar was advantageous to both modernists seeking to maintain their celebrity status and the periodical itself, which attempted to cultivate and sustain a refined audience. Much in line with her work of the 1930s, Woolf’s short stories engaged with social and ethical issues such as the righteousness of penetrating other people’s lives and innermost truths (“In the Looking Glass”), violence and decay (“The Shooting Party”), capitalism and antisemitism (“The Duchess and the Jeweler”), human and non-human worlds (“Lappin and Lapinova”). Though often considered as non-canonical in terms of both their rather prosaic plot as well as characterisation, and the commercial venue in which they appeared, the stories Woolf wrote for Harper’s Bazaar reflect the preoccupations of the last decade of her career and are indicative of the tensions between high and low in modernist culture.

L’objectiu d’aquest article és estudiar la importància que té l’arxiu com a eina de construcció d’una identitat nacional i si a través de la seva organització es pot veure si la dita construcció nacional ha estat reeixida o no. En aquest sentit, s’agafa l’exemple de l’Arxiu Històric Nacional d’Espanya i s’analitza des de l’organització dels primers arxius en territori espanyol fins a la construcció de l’Arxiu Històric Nacional a finals del segle xix. Mitjançant aquesta anàlisi també es posa en relleu el paper que va tenir la Història en la formació de la identitat nacional i la seva interrelació amb l’arxiu. Una ciència no podria ser sense l’altre.

This paper compares Léon Walras’ and Augustin Cournot’s views on monetary regulation. It shows that whereas Cournot believed discretionary monetary regulation to be convenient and acceptable, Walras held that the only acceptable monetary system is based exclusively on the stability of the value of money under a monetary rule following a strict equivalence between metallic reserves and a pure medium of exchange form of money. The paper also advances Cournot understood more clearly than Walras the evolution of the monetary system of their days because Walras was trying to guarantee the coherence of his pure theory with his applied theory, which made him unable to accept the evolution toward a monetary system based on fiat money.

ABSTRACT Sugarcane bagasse, a waste material generated by the sugar-alcohol industry, is rich in lignocellulosic components such as cellulose and hemicellulose. The bagasse can be employed as a raw material in the pulp and paper industry, but is currently rarely used for this purpose, due to the availability of traditional sources such as Eucalyptus and Pinus. The objective of this work was to compare the physical and mechanical properties of papers produced using the cellulose extracted from sugarcane, Eucalyptus, and Pinus by the Kraft method. Four paper samples were produced using cellulose obtained from the following fiber sources: (I) 100% sugarcane bagasse; (II) 100% Eucalyptus; (III) 75% Eucalyptus + 25% Pinus; (IV) 75% sugarcane bagasse + 25% Pinus. Physical and mechanical tests were performed based on regulatory methodologies of the paper industry. The results indicated that the physical and mechanical characteristics of the paper produced from the sugarcane cellulose were similar to those of the traditional paper produced using Eucalyptus. Particular features such as good tearing resistance and tensile strength, as well as increased porosity and moisture, could be adjusted according to the intended use of the paper. Therefore, sugarcane bagasse can be considered a sustainable alternative to Eucalyptus and Pinus for the production of high quality paper, adding value to this agricultural residue.

This paper aims to carry out a diachronic analysis of Brazilian scientific productivity in the Library and Information Science field as indexed by the Scopus database for the period 1986-2015. We also analyze the main journals that publish Brazilian contributions, compare the impact of Brazilian production between papers published in Latin language journals and those in English, and identify the primary language of Brazilian papers and the main collaborating countries. We carried out a search on Brazilian scientific productivity in the analyzed field in the Scopus database for the studied period. Then, through a manual filter, we identified a corpus of 1,195 papers. Of the 90 journals identified, 26 journals were considered the main venues for Brazilian Library and Information Science research. These were grouped using multivariate cluster analysis. The main collaborating countries were grouped based on normalized values of co-authorship using Salton's cosine measure. Since 2006, Brazilian scientific production has experienced a similar growth tendency as the rest of the world. We observed that Brazilian journals, publishing in Portuguese, formed a cluster, while English and Spanish language journals clustered separately. We observed that papers published in English received on average more citations than those papers published in other languages.

Writing Studies scholars have raised concerns about framing student struggles to integrate secondary sources as an ethical problem of plagiarism. They propose, instead, framing student citation practices as transitional markers of development in which students use patchwriting to learn the discursive norms and values of academia. Patchwriting as a literacy tool for transfer of knowledge raised questions for me about whether students develop other scaffolds to aid in learning transfer. In this pilot study, I investigate student use of anchor sources, the “perfect source” that frames a student’s central argument, rhetorical structure, and/or purpose. Based on a random sample of a nationwide corpus of First-Year Writing research papers from 16 US institutions, findings show that 21 of 30 research papers (70%) revealed evidence of an anchor source. Six of the 9 papers without anchor sources show evidence of significant rhetorical problems. Results suggest evidence of knowledge transfer, as well as pedagogical implications for supporting this transitional stage in student development.

The Garden in Motion is a concept that was developed by Gilles Clément in the early 1980s as the result of the experimentation conducted in his garden-house, La Vallée. Clément’s interest in promoting this garden archetype based on managing neglected land led him to write a number of works in order to explain the conceptual underpinnings of his model, with the ultimate aim of having them published. From the writing of the first manuscripts, dating from 1984, to the first edition of “Le jardin en movement” in 1991, he produced a series of different documents that would form the basis of the text that was finally published. It was a long process in which Clément not only had to fully develop his ideas but also to overcome the difficulties involved in finding a company to publish what he called his ‘petit livre’. The aim of this article is to show the creative process behind Clément’s book and its relationship with the creative process of building his garden, while endeavouring to reply to the question of whether it is possible to establish an equivalence between both processes. This is made possible through the analysis of documents kept by Clément in his personal archive, some of which have never been published.

A multi-modal search space can be defined as having multiple attraction basins – each basin has a single local optimum which is reached from all points in that basin when greedy local search is used. Optimization in multi-modal search spaces can then be viewed as a two-phase process. The first phase is exploration in which the most promising attraction basin is identified. The second phase is exploitation in which the best solution (i.e. the local optimum) within the previously identified attraction basin is attained. The goal of thresheld convergence is to improve the performance of search techniques during the first phase of exploration. The effectiveness of thresheld convergence has been demonstrated through applications to existing metaheuristics such as particle swarm optimization and differential evolution, and through the development of novel metaheuristics such as minimum population search and leaders and followers.

El present article analitza la relació epistolar entre el doctor Joan Solé i Pla i Josep Subirà Puig, dos familiars que des de Barcelona i Madrid es van comprometre amb l’ajut material i la promoció dels voluntaris espanyols i catalans a les files de la Legió Estrangera francesa durant la Primera Guerra Mundial. A través de la seva correspondència busquem analitzar les projeccions nacionals en disputa dels discursos sobre els voluntaris i comprovar una qüestió escassament treballada: la important cobertura i organització de la propaganda sobre els voluntaris impel·lida per Josep Subirà, qui, malgrat tot, va mantenir amb Solé i Pla una relació estreta marcada per la cordialitat familiar i l’entusiasme per les mútues activitats aliadòfiles.

Conclusion. | (Abstract) The 29 March 2017 is now set to become the historical day Art. 50 TEU was triggered for the first time ever. Equally, unprecedented negotiations, in which the United Kingdom and the European Union will settle their divorce, will follow. With the aim of proving that the UK Government has the necessary negotiating strategy, it recently published a White Paper on its exit from and new partnership with the EU. Despite the promises, this Paper is far from providing certainty and clarity. However, it is also a step away from a previous superficial and simplistic approach to Brexit. In this Insight, I explain why the White Paper is riddled with contradictions and why, nonetheless, this confusing and vague exposition of what the UK will be seeking to achieve from its withdrawal is a welcome though disguised acknowledgment of the complexities that Brexit will entail.

Introduction: the student scientific activity is a dynamic process that includes all the activities that are carried out during a course, among which are: the Student Scientific Day, so it is of interest its analysis in order to find barriers and strengths. Objective: to characterize some metrics of the works presented in the XXXII Student Scientific Conference of the University of Medical Sciences of Las Tunas. Methods: a descriptive and transversal bibliometric study was carried out in January 2022 with the papers presented at the XXXII Student Scientific Conference of the University of Medical Sciences of Las Tunas. The universe consisted of 99 papers. Variables such as type of work, assistantship and those related to bibliographic references were evaluated. Descriptive statistics were used. Results: the Faculty of Medical Sciences "Dr. Zoilo E. Marinello Vidaurreta" was the institution with the highest number of papers in the event (76). A total of 238 participants were reported, with a predominance of multiple authorship in the papers, 69.75% were composed of 3 authors. The participation of internal medicine assistant students predominated (19). A total of 1945 bibliographic references were used, with an average of 19.65 references per paper. The PI was between 0.3 (case presentations) and 0.36 (originals). Conclusions: the XXXI Jornada Científica Estudiantil was characterized by the predominance of multiple authorship, female authors, outstanding participation of internal medicine assistant students, use of bibliographic references in Spanish in the reports, as well as a low Price index.

This paper describes the research published during the period 2011-2020 by five leading Spanish peer-reviewed journals of communication, aiming to identify the most common theoretical frameworks and standard theories. A statistically representative sample of the articles published during that period was systematically selected from the five journals of communication ranked as having the greatest continuity and impact according to SJR-Scopus: Profesional de la Información, Comunicar, Communication & Society, Estudios sobre el Mensaje Periodístico and Revista Latina de Comunicación Social. A coding protocol that includes 13 variables and 74 categories was defined and applied to compare the type of theoretical frameworks and the theories in the different subject areas observed. The results show that although almost all the papers studied have a theoretical framework, fewer than half are grounded on recognizable theories. Specifically, journalism and digital communication are the two subject areas whose articles frequently include standard theories: in journalism by the support of classical theories of communication (framing, agenda setting, journalistic professional cultures and roles), and in digital communication by the support of more theoretically dispersed frameworks. Theoretical frameworks developed by literature review are common in other subject areas (such as audiovisual studies, public relations and documentation).

This paper discusses 286 proposals and reports of Green Chemistry (GC) teaching experiences, in papers of the Journal of Chemical Education (JCEd) until 2019. The analysis was based on previous categories: source-problem, paper focus, subjects/area of knowledge, target groups, GC contents, type of approach and purpose(s) of the proposal. A list of possible characteristics of each category served as an example to compare with the information resulting from the analyses, and thus improve the discussions. In 127 papers, GC and its teaching were associated, albeit generally, with the theme of sustainability/sustainable development, which points to its potential to face environment-related aspects of chemistry in teaching. A systemic vision in the interconnection between GC and sustainability/sustainable development appeared more explicitly in 39 papers up to 2019. So far, the analysis highlights a certain reproduction of traditional chemistry teaching, and little evidence of the particularities of GC teaching. Despite the intention of inserting GC into chemistry teaching, proposals for its incorporation are often made superficially, more as an addendum or an extra quality than a specific goal. More methodological detail of the experiments carried out is needed to help in the dissemination of GC in the training curriculum of chemists. The discussions and reports on teaching approaches based on Systems Thinking showed the opening of a promising new methodological challenge within this theoretical paradigm.

New Ukrainian and world realities set new tasks for the higher educational establishments, which are related to the search for new, modern methods that allow to increase the effectiveness of training. Currently, topical are the issues of not only professional but also the personal development of the student forming the priority in the implementation of educational activities in universities, preparation for future professional activities, as well as for successful interaction in society. The concept of «individual social competence» is an important factor in creating a system of educational process which takes into account aspects of professional development, and at the same time the peculiarities of the formation of the student personality. The author analyses the concept of «competence», considers the key competences for lifelong learning, identified by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, including social competence, studies the scientific achievements of Ukrainian and foreign scientists, including G. Gedviliene, H. S. Han, K. M. Kemple, U.P. Kanning, M. Horenburg, G.W. Ladd, H. K. Ma, K. Monahan, M. Monnier, O.V. Varetska, N.I. Hlebova, D.V. Hubareva, O.I. Hura, M.O. Doktorovych, I.B. Zarubinska, O.O. Subina, V.M. Shakhrai. They explored different aspects of social competence of different age categories. The author concludes that, despite different interpretations, all scientists agree that social competence is an acquired skill, it can be formed and developed throughout life. It was also determined that the developed social competence determines the status of the individual in society, it affects the success in professional activities. The high level of social competence allows a person not only to be realized in professional activities, but also to influence the processes in society, which in turn determines its stability. The author’s definition of the concept of «individual social competence» is given in the paper; the author concludes that social competence is an integrated ability that contains other competencies: spiritual, civic, communicative, linguistic; the concept of social competence is closely related to professional competence, without the successful interaction of the individual with society it is impossible to acquire the skills and abilities inherent in a qualified specialist. Thus, an important task for modern higher education is the formation and development of social competence of students, which is the key to successful implementation of the future specialist in professional activities. The educational process should be aimed at forming a system of knowledge about interaction in society, understanding the system of social values, ability to cooperate in society, the ability to communicate constructively, because only a socially competent person can.

La regió més oriental d’Ucraïna, el Donbass, viu des de fa vuit anys una sagnant guerra en què Rússia s’ha vist directament involucrada. A més, la regió ha estat objecte de la propaganda russa, que l’ha utilitzat com un dels principals motius per justificar la seva intervenció militar sobre Ucraïna, el febrer de 2022. Tots els bàndols implicats en aquest conflicte argumenten que estan protegint els interessos i els desitjos dels seus habitants. Però aquests interessos i desitjos, a més de ser sovint manipulats, han sofert moltes modificacions i pressions després d’una guerra tan llarga, que entre altres coses ha fet que prop de la meitat dels habitants hagin abandonat la regió, i la resta es vegi sota una pressió militar, política i mediàtica constant. The process of convergence with the European Higher Education Area led to the publication of the White Paper of the title of the Degree in Psychology (ANECA, 2005) in which an extensive analysis was carried out of the situation of the university studies in psychology in Spain and guidelines were produced to adapt the degree to the European requirements. Ten years later, the present paper aims to analyze the implementation rate of the guidelines included in the White Paper, as well as to develop prognostic models based on the observed trends through time series analyses. The results show a constant and progressive increase of the training programs offered, the number of new faculties, and other closely associated indicators in relation to these growth indicators. Different explanations and reasons for these results are discussed. We also reflect on the impact on job insecurity amongst psychologists, high unemployment rates, and the negative consequences for a sustainable model of professional development.

Conservation environment with high humidity content or exposure to liquid water are directly linked to degradation of cellulosic materials, such as paper and fabrics. This research had as main objective the development of formulations based on two water-repellent products commercially available: a fluoroacrylic co-polymer and a polydimethylsiloxane. The purpose was to test their applicability to paper and textiles, both ancient and modern. Different analytical techniques have been used: FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, colorimetric analysis, observations by SEM-EDX and light microscopy, contact angle measurement and mechanical strength. Applications were carried out by spray and immersion achieving a systematization of the method and the choice of non-toxic solvents. Two of the four formulations tested were prepared with the addition also of silica nanoparticles. The results highlighted the compatibility and effectiveness of fluoroacrylic polymer with low nanosilica percentages applied by immersion.

Paulo Freire is the most cited author in bibliographic references of papers in the Brazilian area of Science Education destined for teacher training. However, analytical-contextual knowledge on this is lacking and still requires further investigation. For example, what would be the profile of the citations? In which types of citations does Freire appear? For what purpose? Why? To answer most of these questions, this study aims to analyze Paulo Freire citations in papers from the Brazilian area of Science Education. We carried out a Bibliometric survey where we analyzed citations. We researched five journals: Ciência & Educação, Ensaio Pesquisa em Educação em Ciências, Investigações em Ensino de Ciências, Revista Brasileira de Pesquisa em Educação em Ciências, and Alexandria: Revista de Educação em Ciência e Tecnologia. If Freire's ideas have been challenged within the restricted environment of a few political parties in Brazil, in the area of scientific knowledge there was an opposite effect: in research on teacher training in the Brazilian area of Science Education, Paulo Freire's theoretical and methodological contributions prevailed quantitatively and qualitatively in citations characterized as organic, conceptual, evolutionary and confirmatory.

Inorganic fillers are usually used in papermaking industry to reduce production costs and enhance paper optical properties. As an attempt to improve fillers application in papermaking, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and poly aluminum chloride (PAC) were used to encapsulate precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) filler and modify its surfaces. In the first step, the optimum conditions for filler treatment (i.e. pH, CMC and PAC contents) were obtained. Through the second step, different amounts of CMC-encapsulated PCC were added to fiber suspension and some hand-sheets were made. Then, the effect of modified filler addition in different levels of 20, 25, and 35% on mechanical and optical properties of paper was investigated. The PAC dosage was found to be a critical factor for effective encapsulation of PCC fillers by carboxymethyl cellulose. When the dosages of CMC and PAC were 4% and 0.8% (based on the dry weight of PCC), respectively, filler modification caused to improve significantly the retention by more than twice. Strength properties of the hand-sheets fabricated with the CMC/PAC-modified PCC were also found to be significantly better than those obtained with the unmodified PCC at similar levels of filler content. In addition, the brightness and opacity of the filled papers at 30% addition of CMC-modified fillers were strikingly enhanced to 88.45 and 77%, respectively. SEM observations of the filled papers also demonstrated that CMC-encapsulated filler particles were clustered and retained efficiently onto the fiber network. The present method for modification of PCC may provide an alternative approach to increase the filler amount in the paper structure by alleviating filler drawbacks.

In this work, the peels of ripe banana (Musa sp.), variety “Prata”, were used to prepare a flour, which was evaluated for its physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity. The characterization of its chemical profile was performed by a fast and simple method: paper spray-mass spectrometry. This flour had high carbohydrate content and total dietary fiber, and significant amount of total phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity. In addition, this flour exhibited higher water-holding, oil-holding and swelling capacities than those of fruit by-products reported in the literature. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of functional groups of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, constituents of insoluble dietary fiber. By the paper spray-mass spectrometry technique, it was possible to suggest the presence of 26 substances such as organic acids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, sugars, quinones, and terpenoids. Thus, this study demonstrated that the ripe banana peel flour has potential application as an ingredient for functional foods.

This article presents an exploratory study about the use of the word “metacognition” in papers published in Science and Mathematics Teaching Brazilian journals of stratum A1 and A2 of CAPES, from 2007 to 2017. The corpus of the research was constituted of 430 papers that were analysed by the procedures of Content Analysis. Two interpretative movements were carried out: the first focused on the general intentionality of the article, exploring the contexts in which the word metacognition was used, systematized in six emerging categories: Learning Process; Metacognitive process; Teacher training; Evaluation Instrument; Learning Object and Learning Environment; the second focused on the meanings of the word metacognition presented in the articles, from which thirteen categories emerged: Metacognitive Process; Metacognitive strategy; Metacognitive Ability; Metacognitive Character; Metacognitive thinking; Learning; Metacognitive Knowledge; Teacher Metacognition; Self-regulation; Awareness raising; Metacognitive Competence; Metacognitive Model and Metacognitive Level. From these analyzes resulted what we call the „general diagram‟, which represents a synthesis of researches about metacognition published in Science and Mathematics Teaching Brazilian journals in the last 11 years.

Somatotypic studies and their description of the human morphological configuration allow to appreciate impacts on eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. This study determined the somatotypic difference in Mapuche (NM) and non-Mapuche (NNM) children from Malleco, Chile. Through the ISAK protocol, 160 children with a mean age of 12.5 years, height 145.5 ± 3.5 cm and weight 43.7 ± 3 kg were evaluated, obtaining the following classifications: Group 12 years, Mapuche; mesoendomorphs. Non-Mapuche group 12 years; Endomesomorph. Group 13 years old, Mapuche; Mesoendomorphs. Non Mapuche group 13 years old; endomesomorph. The results indicate that for the age of 12 years, the NM presented lower values of endomorphy and higher values of mesomorphy (p≤0.01) than NNM. The 13-year-old NMs presented lower endomorphy and mesomorphy values (p≤0.01) than NNM. In conclusion, Mapuche schoolchildren present a mesomorphic predominance, however, NNM present a predominance of the endomorphic component.

Introduction: The National Scientific Congress (NSC) is an annual event held in Peru in which medical students from all over the country present their research work. Objectives: To determine the publication rate in indexed scientific journals of research papers submitted to the NSCs held between 2010 and 2014, as well as the factors associated with their publication, and to describe the characteristics of the published papers. Materials and methods: Retrospective study in which 407 abstracts of research papers were reviewed. A publication time window of 6 years (from submission) was considered. A bivariate analysis was performed to assess differences between categorical and numerical variables using the chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests, respectively. In addition, a multivariate analysis was performed using Poisson regression models (a crude and an adjusted model), calculating relative risk (RR) values with their respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) to determine the factors associated with the publication of papers. Aquest assaig presenta una discussió i una anàlisi sobre el cas Cybersyn des d’una perspectiva d’arqueologia de mitjans, parant una atenció particular als desenvolupaments teòrics i metodològics plantejats pels acadèmics Friedrich Kittler i Wolfgang Ernst. En conseqüència, la discussió se centrarà en els aspectes no visuals del projecte en qüestió, deixant de banda les mirades «iconogràfiques» que fins ara han abordat aquest cas, sobretot des de les fotografies que documenten la seva sala d’operacions. De manera alternativa, proposo moure la nostra atenció cap a la xarxa de tèlex i el sistema de processament que van sostenir Cybersyn, per buscar, en els sistemes des símbols que hi van circular, la materialització del saber tècnic que caracteritza el cas i esbossar-ne així, potencialment, l’abast cultural.

Lipoedema is a chronic progressive disorder of adipose tissue leading to an enlargement of lower extremities. It is considered to be rare; however, the prevalence of the disease is underestimated because it is commonly misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema and the general awareness is poor. The etiology of the disorder is considered to be multifarious, including genetic inheritance, hormonal imbalance and microcirculation alterations. Diagnosis is mainly based on medical history and physical examination. Management of lipoedema is focused on reducing the symptoms, improving the quality of life and preventing further progression of the disease. The aim of this paper is to raise the awareness of the disease and provide appropriate clinical guidance for the assessment of lipoedema. We searched through the PubMed/MEDLINE database and took into consideration all of the results available as of 6September, 2020 and outlined the current evidence regarding lipoedema epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and management. Better understanding of lipoedema is crucial for establishing an early diagnosis and a proper treatment, which in turn will reduce the psychological and physical implications associated with the disease.
