It discusses the frequency of each verb and the possible factors that may have influenced its selection, such as imitation of previous authors, the social status of the communication agents, the requested things, and any difficulty in fulfilling the request. For example, the fact that the highest frequency was found for quaeso (which was perceived as an archaism already in Cicero’s time) suggests that Gregory followed the model of learned men from the 4th and 5th centuries CE who “resuscitated” this verb after its decline in the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE. The enduring effects of COVID-19 have called into question many of the assumptions upon which media and cultural studies rest, including a fundamental mode of perception: the sense of smell. In dialog with the field of sensory studies, this paper traces digital smell loss (anosmia) communities from pre-pandemic Facebook groups to mid-pandemic TikTok challenges. This article considers digital smell loss communities on TikTok as imitation publics characterized by repetition. Via replicable TikTok challenges, digital smell-loss communities reckoned with the unmooring effects of a seemingly mild symptom. By exploring how formulaic smell-loss challenges generated support and facilitated community-building, this article demands greater attention to a sense often considered 'disposable'. This paper attempts to develop a constructive dialogue between moral bioenhancement and Reformed theology of sanctification. According to Reformed theology, human beings are first sanctified by God objectively (passive sanctification) and consequently seek subjectively for their own growth in moral life (active sanctification). Moral bioenhancement and sanctification, thus, share a commonality, that is, emphasizing moral betterment. As such, to the extent that passive sanctification is not obliterated but rather prioritized, moral bioenhancement can be viewed as a consequence of a good work performed freely by the sanctified person to seek for moral growth in the imitation of Christ. The Swedish Nobel prize winner Harry Martinsson is introduced in this paper, and his epic science fiction poem Aniara is presented. Mima, a miraculous accessor and transmitter of information from all over the universe, is juxtaposed to Sandor Ferenczi's concept of mimicry and Wittgenstein's views on aspect-seeing. It is proposed that the Mima can be seen as a metaphor for the infant mind, having creative mimetic faculties. The single most important realm of mimicry and auto-plastic adaptation is basic trust and empathy. Mimicry is thus suggested to be our deepest and most extensive way of knowing the other as well as ourself, although without cognitive structure. Volumetric representation is a technique used to express 3D objects in various fields, such as medical applications. On the other hand, tomography images for reconstructing volumetric data have limited utilization because they contain personal information. Existing GAN-based medical image generation techniques can produce virtual tomographic images for volume reconstruction while preserving the patient's privacy. Nevertheless, these images often do not consider vertical correlations between the adjacent slices, leading to erroneous results in 3D reconstruction. Furthermore, while volume generation techniques have been introduced, they often focus on surface modeling, making it challenging to represent the internal anatomical features accurately. This paper proposes volumetric imitation GAN (VI-GAN), which imitates a human anatomical model to generate volumetric data. The primary goal of this model is to capture the attributes and 3D structure, including the external shape, internal slices, and the relationship between the vertical slices of the human anatomical model. The proposed network consists of a generator for feature extraction and up-sampling based on a 3D U-Net and ResNet structure and a 3D-convolution-based LFFB (local feature fusion block). In addition, a discriminator utilizes 3D convolution to evaluate the authenticity of the generated volume compared to the ground truth. VI-GAN also devises reconstruction loss, including feature and similarity losses, to converge the generated volumetric data into a human anatomical model. In this experiment, the CT data of 234 people were used to assess the reliability of the results. When using volume evaluation metrics to measure similarity, VI-GAN generated a volume that realistically represented the human anatomical model compared to existing volume generation methods. There is a large body of evidence of apparently spontaneous mimicry in humans. This phenomenon has been described as "automatic imitation" and attributed to a mirror neuron system, but there is little direct evidence that it is involuntary rather than intentional. Cook et al. supplied the first such evidence in a unique strategic game design that gave all subjects a pecuniary incentive to avoid imitation [Cook R, Bird G, Lünser G, Huck S, Heyes C (2012) Proc Biol Sci 279(1729):780—786]. Subjects played Rock-Paper-Scissors repeatedly in matches between fixed pairs, sometimes with one and sometimes with both subjects blindfolded. The frequency of draws in the blind-blind condition was at chance, but in the blind-sighted condition it was significantly higher, suggesting automatic imitation had occurred. Automatic imitation would raise novel issues concerning how strategic interactions are modeled in game theory and social science; however, inferring automatic imitation requires significant incentives to avoid it, and subjects' incentives were less than 3 US cents per 60-game match. We replaced Cook et al.'s Rock-Paper-Scissors with a Matching Pennies game, which allows far stronger incentives to avoid imitation for some subjects, with equally strong incentives to imitate for others. Our results are important in providing evidence of automatic imitation against significant incentives. That some of our subjects had incentives to imitate also enables us clearly to distinguish intentional responding from automatic imitation, and we find evidence that both occur. Human action recognition (HAR) is a rapidly growing field with numerous applications in various domains. HAR involves the development of algorithms and techniques to automatically identify and classify human actions from video data. Accurate recognition of human actions has significant implications in fields such as surveillance and sports analysis and in the health care domain. This paper presents a study on the design and development of an imitation detection system using an HAR algorithm based on deep learning. This study explores the use of deep learning models, such as a single-frame convolutional neural network (CNN) and pretrained VGG-16, for the accurate classification of human actions. The proposed models were evaluated using a benchmark dataset, KTH. The performance of these models was compared with that of classical classifiers, including K-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest. Typographic mimicry is the wrapping of writing in a "foreign dress," i.e. the use of typefaces in which one's script (e.g. Latin) is made to visually resemble a different script (e.g. Chinese) with the goal of evoking associations with a "foreign" culture. First, this paper addresses the formal aspects of this practice, specifically the choice of visual features to be mimicked. The core part then focuses on typographic mimicry as a social practice and includes a discussion of both the typographic knowledge that different actors – both lay and expert producers and recipients – must apply to establish and recognise the associated cultural indexicality and the typographic ideologies (i.e. beliefs and attitudes) these actors hold. The central question being investigated is how typographic mimicry is discursively negotiated. An exemplary metapragmatic discourse analysis of online reactions to a food ad and comments to two articles covering the topic catered at readers with different knowledge backgrounds highlights that typographic mimicry is not a "neutral" practice. It shows that central aspects being debated are the (re)appropriation of cultural stereotypes by users both outside and within the respective cultures and the related question of whether using typographic mimicry is generally (in)appropriate (or even racist). This paper argues that in Kierkegaard's works, in his upbuilding discourses and late journal entries in particular, meekness or gentleness (Danish: Sagtmodighed) is presented as a distinctive moral and spiritual quality that exhibits a number of characteristics that are usually regarded as attributes of a virtue. Following a "grammatical approach" to what counts as a virtue, rather than a specifically Aristotelian-Thomistic interpretation, it is argued that Kierkegaard presents meekness as an encompassing attitude, a character trait, which can be acquired through imitation of exemplary persons, Christ, in particular, which aims for the good life, is conducive of the good, and is for the benefit of others and the self. It is demonstrated that according to Kierkegaard, meekness differs from other virtues such as courage and patience by its forgiving attitude towards the wrongdoer and nonviolent resistance to injustice and evil. As a virtue that disposes a person to nonviolent resistance, meekness has socio-political implications: injustice is uncovered and criticized for the benefit of "the poor". Roleplay, as a form of speaker imitation, has commonly been used as a tool to investigate the emergence of sociolinguistic expectations in children. In this paper, we integrate previous methodological insights on roleplay with the aim to draft a unified protocol for its design and analysis in (developmental) (socio)linguistics. Special attention is paid to guiding principles for (1) role selection, (2) roleplay elicitation, (3) roleplay identification, (4) isolation of the linguistic variable and (5) cross-verification of the results. The roleplay protocol is applied to a case study on English insertions in Belgian Dutch by five preadolescents, where it seems to effectively capture sociolinguistic expectations: respondents increasingly insert English elements in their performances of English-oriented roles (e.g. rapper) and limit those elements in their performances of Dutch-oriented roles (e.g. farmer). Hybrid polymer composites are utilized in biomechanical design and orthopedic surgery training to imitate the thermomechanical behavior of human bones. Despite extensive research on the mechanics of hybrid composites in biomechanical design, information on their thermomechanical response during orthopedic drilling operations is scarce. This paper presents a new experimental study to characterize the force and temperature generated during the drilling of hybrid composites that simulate human bones. To simulate the hybrid multi-layer structure of bones, the studied composite comprises a Polyurethane core sandwiched between Glass-Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) layers—the former resembling the cancellous part of the bone and the latter cortical layers. This study also identifies an empirical relationship between thrust force, temperature, drilling feed and speed, and composite composition. Empirical models are developed using multivariate polynomial regression (MPR) and artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the force and temperature during drilling. The models have a correlation coefficient of above 0.9 between predicted and measured results and can be used to improve orthopedic drilling design and control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the publication of Meltzoff and Moore's seminal paper, neonatal imitation has been discussed, debated, and scrutinised at considerable length. Despite this, the temporal structure within which the interaction sits, has received limited attention. We hypothesise that underlying successful examples of neonatal imitation exists a narrative temporal structure, expressed and perceived not only through vocalisations but also (if not primarily) through movement. We contextualise neonatal imitation through a communicative lens, viewing the phenomenon as an early dialogue between adult and infant, underpinned by the same narrative structure as other "proto-conversations" in infancy. From this perspective, several of the leading and traditional theories that have been proposed to explain neonatal imitation are considered. Ultimately, we argue neonatal imitation is an innately dialogical phenomenon that forms one of the first examples of primary intersubjectivity, exemplifying the importance of the neonatal period in human psychological and social development. With the rapid development of autonomous driving technology, both self-driven and human-driven vehicles will share roads in the future and complex information exchange among vehicles will be required. Therefore, autonomous vehicles need to behave as similar to human drivers as possible, to ensure that their behavior can be effectively understood by the drivers of other vehicles and be more in line with the cognition of humans on driving behavior. Therefore, this paper studies the evaluation function of human drivers, using the method of inverse reinforcement learning, aiming for the learned behavior to better imitate the behavior of human drivers. At the same time, this paper proposes a semi-Markov model, to extract the intentions of surrounding related vehicles and divides them into defensive and cooperative, leading the vehicle to adopt a reasonable response to different types of driving scenarios. They influence the functioning of communication models in the postmodern era that evolve in accordance with the achievements of technology and acquire mobility, variability and interactivity. Interaction between social processes and scientific and technological achievements is increasing, the essence of communication in the space of postmodern culture is being rethought, particularly, the boundary between the types of art is being levelled. The latter phenomenon leads to the emergence of new instruments and methods of artistic creativity and expands the possibilities of artistic selfexpression. One of the promising areas of artistic exploration is the creation of sound interactive installations. This paper proposes a classification of communication models that are based on the analysis of interactive sound installations. The classification is based on determining the degree to which audiences actions influence the final sound result of the creative action. The paper claims that the parameters of the exhibition space are important components of the installation's structure and form. A dialogue with nature by way of incorporating sounds of nature, their imitations, and interpretations in art objects is found to be a current trend in interactive sound installations. Airport gates are the main places for aircraft to receive ground services. With the increased number of flights, limited gate resources near to the terminal make the gate assignment work more complex. Traditional solution methods based on mathematical programming models and iterative algorithms are usually used to solve these static situations, lacking learning and real-time decision-making abilities. In this paper, a two-stage hybrid algorithm based on imitation learning and genetic algorithm (IL-GA) is proposed to solve the gate assignment problem. First of all, the problem is defined from a mathematical model to a Markov decision process (MDP), with the goal of maximizing the number of flights assigned to contact gates and the total gate preferences. In the first stage of the algorithm, a deep policy network is created to obtain the gate selection probability of each flight. This policy network is trained by imitating and learning the assignment trajectory data of human experts, and this process is offline. In the second stage of the algorithm, the policy network is used to generate a good initial population for the genetic algorithm to calculate the optimal solution for an online instance. The experimental results show that the genetic algorithm combined with imitation learning can greatly shorten the iterations and improve the population convergence speed. The flight rate allocated to the contact gates is 14.9% higher than the manual allocation result and 4% higher than the traditional genetic algorithm. Learning the expert assignment data also makes the allocation scheme more consistent with the preference of the airport, which is helpful for the practical application of the algorithm. This paper presents a series of experiments in collective social robotics, spanning more than 10 years, with the long-term aim of building embodied models of (aspects of) cultural evolution. Initial experiments demonstrated the emergence of behavioural traditions in a group of social robots programmed to imitate each other's behaviours (we call these Copybots). These experiments show that the noisy (i.e. less than perfect fidelity) imitation that comes for free with real physical robots gives rise naturally to variation in social learning. More recent experimental work extends the robots' cognitive capabilities with simulation-based internal models, equipping them with a simple artificial theory of mind. With this extended capability we explore, in our current work, social learning not via imitation but robot–robot storytelling, in an effort to model this very human mode of cultural transmission. In this paper, we give an account of the methods and inspiration for these experiments, the experiments and their results, and an outline of possible directions for this programme of research. This paper discusses three extraordinary imitations from India the obverses of which are based on Roman issues while the reverses imitate Sasanian coins. These specimens are exceptional and puzzling for two reasons: the unique combination of obverse and reverse designs and the absence of genuine issues which could have been used as their reverse prototypes among finds from the territories they were made and used in. Employing the object biography paradigm for investigating the imitations provides a dynamic perspective on objects actively involved in social relationships. Social learning often occurs between groups with different levels of experience. Yet little is known about the ideal behavioral rules in such contexts. Existing insights only apply when individuals learn from each other in the same group. In this paper, we close this gap and consider two groups, novices and experienced. Experienced should not learn from novices. For novices learning from experienced, a particular form of probabilistic imitation is selected. This paper analyzes two transformative conceptions of qedushah (holiness) in medieval Jewish thought, Moses Maimonides's and Moses Nahmanides's. Maimonides reduces qedushah to the Mosaic commandments which he reconceives as communal institutions to constrain bodily desires and promote intellectualist values and as training for perfected individuals to de-corporealize themselves in imitation of God. Nahmanides argues that Maimonides's legal reduction of qedushah leads to the absurd conclusion that the perfectly scrupulous law-abiding scoundrel who exploits loopholes in the law is qadosh! He therefore reconceives qedushah as a complement to the Mosaic commandments intended to counter the problem of the scoundrel. Thus qedushah is re-born as a corrective to abuse of the Law. Nahmanides then proposes two ways to achieve this goal: i) by rabbinic enactment of more laws to fill in (loop) holes in the Law and ii) by cultivating a virtue-oriented, non-legal conception of holiness as a character-trait that leads agents to act properly and spontaneously without legislation. For Maimonides the ultimate state of qedushah is the dis-embodied state of the intellect, for Nahmanides it is a state in which the whole person, body and soul, clings to the deity. This essay engages Idan Dershowitz's recent attempt to rehabilitate the Deuteronomy fragments Moses Wilhelm Shapira offered for sale in 1883. After summarizing the contents of Dershowitz's volume, this paper evaluates Shapira's fragments in relation to the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Moabitica and other forgeries connected to Shapira. It considers the implications of Shapira's transcription of the text, which Dershowitz uses to demonstrate Shapira's innocence. To counter Dershowitz's hypothesis regarding the "proto-biblical" origin of the fragments, it is proposed that the composition is better understood as a post-biblical pastiche. Dershowitz has endeavored to sever the text from the possibilities allowed by 19th century European scholarship; the present article contextualizes the find within the religious world of 19th century Jerusalem. While the allure of significance can encourage scholars to overcome doubts and accept the authenticity of suspicious objects, Shapira's fragments remain very dubious indeed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While much of the English School has focused on liberal aspects of solidarism, forms of "illiberal solidarism" in contemporary international society remain underexplored. Drawing on archival material and elite interviews conducted in Central Asia in the period 2013–2019, this paper advances the claim that the Central Asian elites have developed the institution of authoritarianism in their region through the mechanisms of mimicry/emulation and praise/blame. By looking at specific discourses and practices over the last two decades, the paper discusses how the Central Asian governments have been using the new elements of the "democratic transition" in combination with the traditional legitimation offered by diplomatic recognition to secure authoritarian regimes in the democratic age, to create authoritarian state-centric solidarity in the region, and to make "avtoritet" and "stabil'nost'" fundamental pillars of the Central Asian regional order. The paper contributes to the English School literature by providing an initial account of illiberal solidarism and by showing how authoritarianism can potentially be an institution of specific regional international societies; to the authoritarian diffusion literature by demonstrating that authoritarianism can have a deontic component alongside considerations of domestic survival; and to the broader norm diffusion literature by focusing on the spread of illiberal values. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and discuss the following two functions that are considered to be important in human-coexistence robots and human-symbiotic robots: the method of generating emotional movements, and the method of transmitting behavioral intentions. The generation of emotional movements is to design the bodily movements of robots so that humans can feel specific emotions. Specifically, the application of Laban movement analysis, the development from the circumplex model of affect, and the imitation of human movements are discussed. However, a general technique has not yet been established to modify any robot movement so that it contains a specific emotion. The transmission of behavioral intentions is about allowing the surrounding humans to understand the behavioral intentions of robots. Specifically, informative motions in arm manipulation and the transmission of the movement intentions of robots are discussed. In the former, the target position in the reaching motion, the physical characteristics in the handover motion, and the landing distance in the throwing motion are examined, but there are still few research cases. In the latter, no groundbreaking method has been proposed that is fundamentally different from earlier studies. Further research and development are expected in the near future. Devotional images in Renaissance Italy often compare divine visions to an enlivened statue or work of art, thereby heightening the effect of divine immediacy. Yet the early modern period also saw the emergence of another kind of picture that is much less studied. This alternative model favoured the apparent stoniness or emptiness of artistic simulacra – as seen in Cerano's painted representation of the Virgin in the guise of a marble statue rendered in grisaille. It is a striking departure from Catholic reformers' insistence on the mimetic naturalism of true images. As this paper shows, Cerano's work went against the predominant paradigm of imitation, whereby artistic replicas acted as potent transmitters of divine presence inherent in the original cult image. Wang Bi's work is often used as evidence for "Confucian" interpretations and translations of the Laozi. Those who argue that the explicit rejections of Confucian values in chapters 5, 18, 19, and 38 should actually be read as admonishing hollow imitation and the mere appearance of Confucian morality often cite Wang Bi. Additionally, this great philosopher is normally taken as a mere commentator who simply sought to synthesize Confucian and Daoist ideas. In this paper, I will argue that Wang's project is, in fact, far more complex and nuanced. He develops his own philosophical system, which appreciates some underlying commensurability between the Laozi and Analects. Describing him as promoting a "Confucian" Laozi is inaccurate as he ultimately leans more heavily on "Daoist" concepts, such as "self-so" and "non-action." In short, Wang Bi develops a unique philosophical system grounded heavily in various classics, and while his commentary on the Laozi is taken as "Confucian," it is, in fact, far more complex. "Psychology, politics and poetry in Republic IV and X". In this paper, I argue that in the Republic the possibility of a good koinōnia is hindered by the emotional potency and psychological perversion of mimetic-pleasurable poetry, which stimulates and strengthens the irrational part of the soul of its recipients through the imitation of characters linked to desire and anger. To this end, I examine, first, some of the passages in Republic IV in which it is possible to subscribe to the priority of the psychic tripartition over the political tripartition. This paper explores the universe of souvenirs of Sikh Gurus and martyrs available in the bazaars around Sikhism's most sacred shrine, the Darbar Sahib in Amritsar. Rather like objects in museum exhibitions, souvenir art actively produces ideas of divinity and martyrdom. The deliberate arrangements of Guru and martyr souvenirs in shopwindows demonstrate the 'sense' of curation of ordinary shopkeepers in the bazaar. Shop displays, I argue, resemble the care of sacred art by museum curators. But there is more to shop displays than mere imitation. I analyse the vis-à-vis between the souvenir displays of two modern martyrs, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the militant leader of separatist Khalistan, and Bhagat Singh, the nationalist hero, that express bazaar understandings of martyr souvenirs as affective objects, possessing both ritual and political value. Reliable authentication and authorization of individuals are, however, challenging tasks due to possible skilled forgeries; especially when a forger has access to a given signature and deliberately tries to imitate it. This problem is even more emphasised in offline signature verification, where dynamic signature information is lost, resulting, as a consequence, in an increased difficulty discerning between genuine and forged signatures. To address this issue, solutions based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) are currently being devised to automatically extract features from a signature. Although highly performing, these methods require a high number of learnable parameters to produce meaningful signature representations, ultimately leading to long training times. In this paper, the R-SigNet architecture, a multi-task approach exploiting a relaxed loss to learn a reduced feature space for writer-independent (WI) signature verification, is presented. Compact generic features are automatically extracted by this network, so that a support vector machine (SVM) can be trained and tested in offline writer-dependent (WD) mode. By leveraging a small generic feature space, the proposed system achieves improved performances and reduced training times with respect to the current literature, as shown by the results obtained on several benchmark datasets. Objective: Imitation has pervasive associations with social and communicative development. However, few methods have been developed to measure this construct in typically developing infants, and even less is available for at-risk populations, such as infants born preterm. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a particular risk of premature birth, is associated with atypical imitation and social communication. Although imitation emerges in infancy, most current screening and diagnostic tools for ASD cannot be utilized prior to 12 months. The present study aimed to develop and validate a caregiver-report measure of infant imitation, characterize imitation profiles at 4, 6, and 9 months in term and preterm infants, and explore the relationship between imitation and scores on an ASD screening questionnaire at 18 months. Participants and Methods: Participants (N = 571) were recruited from a larger multi-site study of PediaTrac™ v3.0, a web-based tool for monitoring and tracking infant development, and were surveyed longitudinally at birth, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 months. Participants completed the online PediaTrac™ survey and several reliable and validated questionnaires via pen-and-paper format. For the purposes of this study, only the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (3rd ed.; ASQ-3), Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales-Developmental Profile (CSBS-DP), Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ), and the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers - Revised with Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F) were examined. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) proposed imitation items will represent a unitary latent construct, for which convergent and discriminant validity will be demonstrated, (2) there will be measurement invariance between term status groups at each assessment period, (3) preterm infants will obtain lower caregiver-reported imitation scores compared to term infants, and (4) imitation abilities at the assessment period with the most robust imitation factor will predict M-CHAT-R/F scores at 18 months. Results: Distinct imitation factors at 4, 6, and 9 months were modeled with confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses. Relationships between the factors and established measures of infant communication (CSBS; ASQ) and sleep (BISQ) revealed convergent and discriminant validity, respectively. Strict measurement invariance was demonstrated for the 4- and 9-month factors, and metric invariance for the 6-month measure. Full term infants scored higher on imitation at 9 months, though variance in this outcome was related to term status differences in sensorimotor skills. Lastly, the 9-month imitation factor, coupled with 6-month sensorimotor skills, predicted 18-month ASD risk over and above gestational age. Conclusions: This study provides support for the assessment of infant imitation, utilizing imitation to detect risk in preterm infants, and extending the age of identification for ASD risk into the first year. PediaTrac™ imitation, in combination with the PediaTrac™ sensorimotor domain, may be useful in detecting developmental risk, and specifically risk for ASD, within the first year, leading to earlier initiation of intervention. Further, with its minimal completion time and ease of dissemination through digital platforms, this measure can expand access to care and improve long-term outcomes for children and families. The aim of this paper is to grasp the relevant distinctions between various ways in which models and simulations in Artificial Intelligence (AI) relate to cognitive phenomena. In order to get a systematic picture, a taxonomy is developed that is based on the coordinates of formal versus material analogies and theory-guided versus pre-theoretic models in science. These distinctions have parallels in the computational versus mimetic aspects and in analytic versus exploratory types of computer simulation. The proposed taxonomy cuts across the traditional dichotomies between symbolic and embodied AI, general intelligence and symbol and intelligence and cognitive simulation and human/non-human-like AI. According to the taxonomy proposed here, one can distinguish between four distinct general approaches that figured prominently in early and classical AI, and that have partly developed into distinct research programs: first, phenomenal simulations (e.g., Turing's "imitation game"); second, simulations that explore general-level formal isomorphisms in pursuit of a general theory of intelligence (e.g., logic-based AI); third, simulations as exploratory material models that serve to develop theoretical accounts of cognitive processes (e.g., Marr's stages of visual processing and classical connectionism); and fourth, simulations as strictly formal models of a theory of computation that postulates cognitive processes to be isomorphic with computational processes (strong symbolic AI). In continuation of pragmatic views of the modes of modeling and simulating world affairs, this taxonomy of approaches to modeling in AI helps to elucidate how available computational concepts and simulational resources contribute to the modes of representation and theory development in AI research—and what made that research program uniquely dependent on them. In this paper, we investigate which approach to generate eye behaviors using an android robot makes what impressions on humans and clarify which are the important factors for attractive eye behaviors. Thus, we evaluate the human impression of eye behaviors displayed by an android robot while talking to a human by comparing the motions generated by the two approaches. In the first approach, we develop a method to imitate human eye behavior obtained from eye trackers. In the second approach, we control the eye direction, eye-contact duration, and eyeblinks based on the findings of human eye behavior in psychology and cognitive research. In the experiments, we asked male and female subjects to evaluate their impression by comparing the eye behaviors with an android that controls the eye-contact duration and eyeblinks by editing the imitation parameters or the rule-based behavior. In the experiments, we asked subjects to evaluate their impression of different eye behaviors displayed by an android. The eye behaviors were generated by modifying the imitation parameters or the rule-based behavior, which resulted in different eye-contact duration and eyeblink duration and timing. From the results, we found that (1) the imitation and rule-based behaviors showed no difference in terms of human-likeness, (2) the 3-second eye contact obtained better scores regardless of the imitation or rule-based eye behavior, (3) the subjects might regard the long eyeblinks as voluntary eyeblinks, with the intention to break eye contact, and (4) female subjects preferred short eyeblinks rather than long ones and considered that short eyeblinks might be one of the keys to making eye contact more suitable, in contrast to male subjects who preferred long eyeblinks. It is obvious that musical interactions between siblings take place within the family environment and are significant for their musical development. This paper presents data from a study on these interactions about which even now very little is known. Participants are siblings from two to six years old from three Catalan families with similar characteristics. Data is collected by LENA®’s DLP (Digital Language Processor) tool, an audio recorder capable of recording for 16 hours, with high quality and in a non-intrusive way, that is worn by the younger sibling. Recordings were collected periodically and for a whole day and were complemented with some voice messages narrated by the parents to contextualize the recording day. Data has been analysed using a validated table to extract information about four dimensions: 1) participation order, 2) place, 3) interaction type, and 4) source. Results reveal, among other information, that: a) in most of the interactions the older sibling starts the musical episode and the younger one finishes it, b) the interactions happen mostly at home; c) imitation and synchrony are very used, and d) interactions are based equally on songs and improvisations. Several papers by Eckhard Hess from the 1960s and 1970s report that the pupils dilate or constrict according to the interest value, arousing content, or mental demands of visual stimuli. However, Hess mostly used small sample sizes and undocumented luminance control. In a first experiment (N = 182) and a second preregistered experiment (N = 147), we replicated five studies of Hess using modern equipment. Our experiments (1) did not support the hypothesis of gender differences in pupil diameter change with respect to baseline (PC) when viewing stimuli of different interest value, (2) showed that solving more difficult multiplications yields a larger PC in the seconds before providing an answer and a larger maximum PC, but a smaller PC at a fixed time after the onset of the multiplication, (3) did not support the hypothesis that participants' PC mimics the pupil diameter in a pair of schematic eyes but not in single-eyed or three-eyed stimuli, (4) did not support the hypothesis of gender differences in PC when watching a video of a male trying to escape a mob, and (5) supported the hypothesis that arousing words yield a higher PC than non-arousing words. Although we did not observe consistent gender differences in PC, additional analyses showed gender differences in eye movements towards erogenous zones. Furthermore, PC strongly correlated with the luminance of the locations where participants looked. Overall, our replications confirm Hess's findings that pupils dilate in response to mental demands and stimuli of an arousing nature. Guided by the Vygotskian concepts of mimicry , emulation , and imitation , this study examines how eight Chinese EFL students modeled from genre exemplars when composing their first academic papers in university. The students were enrolled in a "Cultural Tourism Studies" course at a university in south China. The course was delivered in a co-teaching approach with an embedded six-week EAP workshop. Given the short time frame of the workshop, an ESP genre-based approach was adopted, and genre exemplars were used to scaffold the students' understanding of two focal genre features (i.e., citation and organization). At the end of the course, text-based interviews were conducted to understand how the students made sense of and used the genre exemplars in the composing process. The analysis of students' term papers revealed a varying amount of mimicry, emulation, and imitation of the target genre features. The introspective and retrospective accounts of students' engagement with the exemplars suggested that imitative learning was multifaceted, dynamic, and varied within and between individuals. These findings challenge the dichotomous characterization of exemplars as either an enabling scaffold or a constraining shackle. In this paper we combine a philosophical theoretical analysis with human movement science empirical studies, in order to provide a better understanding of the possible links between free play and creativity. We deal in particular with some dialectical dynamics inherent to free play: the relation between rules and freedom, spontaneity which often leads to imitation, the presence of a purpose as a necessary element to makes novelty creative, innovation as an essential part of adaptive processes. We remark the topic into a developmental perspective including the role of play tutoring. We advocate an interdisciplinary criticism for approaching the paradigm of free play and creativity. Con el objetivo de estudiar las pautas adultas de imitación y entonamiento afectivo que ocurren en las situaciones de juego social temprano entre adulto y bebé, se realizó un estudio longitudinal de caso único, con una díada adultobebé. La edad del bebé en la primera sesión, según la convención piagetiana [año; mes (día)], fue: 00; 3 (05) y en la última sesión: 00; 6 (28). Se filmaron 8 sesiones de interacción espontánea de la díada, en su hogar, cada 15 días. De cada sesión se seleccionaron los primeros 10 minutos de juego social temprano. Con este material se generó una video-secuencia de juego social temprano a la que se le aplicó un código observacional con categorías para las pautas de actividades de coincidencia maternas (imitación y entonamiento afectivo). Los datos obtenidos en este estudio indican que las actividades de coincidencia maternas de imitación y entonamiento afectivo aparecen en todo el período estudiado, con una frecuencia de dos eventos de coincidencia por minuto de juego social temprano. Se observó que las pautas de entonamiento afectivo materno casi duplican a las de imitación entre los 3 y 6 meses de vida del bebé. Asimismo, se registró que la mayoría de los entonamientos afectivos fueron transmodales y que la madre utilizó su voz como modalidad conductual privilegiada para establecer coincidencias comportamentales con su bebé, ya sea a través de la imitación o del entonamiento. This paper focuses on two specific matching activities of maternal behavior in early social play: imitation and affect attunement. Imitation is a pattern of frequent interaction between adult and baby, providing a pleasant experience to both participants. In that context, imitation is not only bi-directional, but it is the adult who imitates more frequently. Affect attunement is an intuitive and fleeting interaction pattern, through which the adult attunes to the baby's affective state. It is a matching activity, where the amodal features of the infant's behavior (intensity, temporal organization, spatial pattern and / or quantity) are reflected through a different conduct. Previous research indicates that during the first 6 months of the baby's life, the adult very often uses imitation as well as affect attunement for interacting (which involves performing a different behavior than the baby's in which the adult matches the intensity, temporal pattern, spatial pattern, and / or the amount of the child's original behavior). Maternal affect attunement events have been observed from 2 months of age, and the frequency ratio between affect attunement and maternal imitation has been observed to change in ontogenetic development: between the baby's 2nd and 6th months the adult's imitative activity occurs at higher rates; while in the second half of the first year of life, the relationship is reversed. This paper presents the results of a longitudinal case study on a mother-infant dyad, about maternal imitation and affect attunement behaviors in early social play situations between the 3rd and 6th months of the baby's life. According to Piaget's convention [year; month (day)], the baby's age was 00; 3 (05) in the first session, and 00; 6 (28) in the last session. Every 15 days, a total of 8 sessions of the dyad's spontaneous interaction, were filmed in their home. From each session, the first 10 minutes of early social play were selected. With this material a video-sequence of early social play was generated to which an observational code with categories for maternal matching activity patterns (imitation and affect attunement) was applied. The percentage of each category's occurrence in each evolutionary period was calculated. The data obtained in this study indicate that maternal matching activities of imitation and affect attunement appear from the beginning of the studied period. These results confirm those previously obtained in other studies that show the early emergence of adult imitation and affect attunement behavioral patterns. The data also indicate that matching activities of imitation and affect attunement appear throughout the studied period with a frequency of two events per minute of early social play. These results partially confirm those previously obtained in other studies. The new information obtained in our study concerns the frequency of both reciprocity patterns, and the type of behavior of the mother and baby involved in these matching activities. Patterns of maternal affect attunement almost double those of imitation between the baby's 3rd and 6th months. It was also reported that most affect attunements were transmodal and that the mother used her voice as a privileged way to establish a behavioral match with her baby, either through imitation or affect attunement. The most frequent maternal imitations occurred in response to the baby's vocalizations, and affect attunements were caused mainly by the baby's movements. Without detracting from the dyad's intense vocal activity already registered in the field's literature, the high frequency of affect attunements in response to infant movement highlights a trait less noticed in previous research: the adult's mastery in reading the baby's body and movement. When people are engaged in social interaction, they can repeat aspects of each other's communicative behavior, such as words or gestures. This kind of behavioral alignment has been studied across a wide range of disciplines and has been accounted for by diverging theories. In this paper, we review various operationalizations of lexical and gestural alignment. We reveal that scholars have fundamentally different takes on when and how behavior is considered to be aligned, which makes it difficult to compare findings and draw uniform conclusions. Furthermore, we show that scholars tend to focus on one particular dimension of alignment (traditionally, whether two instances of behavior overlap in form), while other dimensions remain understudied. This hampers theory testing and building, which requires a well‐defined account of the factors that are central to or might enhance alignment. To capture the complex nature of alignment, we identify five key dimensions to formalize the relationship between any pair of behavior: time, sequence, meaning, form, and modality. We show how assumptions regarding the underlying mechanism of alignment (placed along the continuum of priming vs. grounding) pattern together with operationalizations in terms of the five dimensions. This integrative framework can help researchers in the field of alignment and related phenomena (including behavior matching, mimicry, entrainment, and accommodation) to formulate their hypotheses and operationalizations in a more transparent and systematic manner. Introduction: Do we always do what others do, and, if not, when and under what conditions do we do so? In this paper we test the hypothesis that mimicry is moderated by the mere knowledge of whether the source is a member of the same social category as ourselves. Methods: We investigated group influence on mimicry using three tasks on a software platform which interfaces with mobile computing devices to allow the controlled study of collective behaviour in an everyday environment. Results: Overall, participants (N = 965) were influenced by the movements of confederates (represented as dots on a screen) who belonged to their own category in both purposive and incidental tasks. Conclusion: Our results are compatible with collective level explanations of social influence premised on shared social identification. This includes both a heuristic of unintended mimicry (the acts of group members are diagnostic of how one should act), and communication of affiliation (based on a desire to make one's group cohesive). The results are incompatible with traditional 'contagion' accounts which suggest mimicry is automatic and inevitable. The results have practical implications for designing behavioural interventions which can harness the power of copying behaviour, for example in emergency evacuations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is an expansion of Brandchaft's notion of pathological accommodation. In a pathological accommodation a child is exposed to immutable primary caretakers unable to perceive the child's subjectivity while at the same time demanding that the child meet the needs of the caretakers. As a result, the child abandons much of his desires and striving in order to maintain the needed ties to the caretakers. I am introducing both the idea of pathological non-accommodation and the subjective importance of both accommodation and non-accommodation in their non-pathological forms. In pathological non-accommodation the child attempts a precocious self-sufficiency overplaying their separateness and distinctness at the expense of taking in the emotionally organized help, information and nurturance they need to thrive in the world. Healthy accommodation and non-accommodation entail having good enough caretakers promoting a child's developing emotionally organized judgments regarding their comforts and discomforts around the vast array of playful and worked on interactions within the child's emotional surround. Examples of early healthy accommodations are turn taking, imitation and other forms of learning. Examples of early healthy non-accommodation are averting one's gaze, crying, displaying displeasure, learning to say "no" and more complex oppositional behavior as development proceeds.
