MANGA (Art) , *ANIMATED television programs - Abstract
The popularity of Japanese comics or better known as manga had reach worldwide. The production of the manga had also led to the creation of derivative products such as animated series and doujinshi. However, most readers outside Japan accessed these media in a translated format that is published independently from the original publisher. As such, many of the readers might not know the distribution system of the original media. In this paper, we discussed the distribution of manga and doujinshi in Japan. These include discussions regarding the general overview of the manga industry, the different types of published manga and doujinshi, as well as their distribution system. Lastly, this paper also discussed briefly what is the unique characteristic of the Japanese manga and doujinshi industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PUBLISHING , *BIBLIOMETRICS , *INFORMATION resources , *SCIENCE journalism , *BOOK industry - Abstract
Purpose/Thesis: The article characterizes the research on the global book publishing market to determine the extent of its interdisciplinarity. Approach/Methods: This article uses quantitative and qualitative analysis of selected academic papers, discipline profiles of their authors and of the journals to investigate which subject area dominate in scientific output of researchers and to establish the relationship between publishing studies and other disciplines on the field of the global book market. In order to prove the relatedness of journals bibliometric methods (co-citation, bibliographic coupling analysis of sources) and knowledge visualization technologies will be used. Results and conclusions: The selected papers focused on book history and book culture, economics and technological aspects of book publishing, and users' attitudes and preferences. The authors published in journals associated with disciplines such as media & communication studies and education (Publishing Research Quarterly, Journal of Scholarly Publishing, Learned Publishing), book studies (Logos) and information studies (Electronic Library, Journal of Documentation). In Corpus 1 (C1) there were co-cited trade magazines and academic journals on library and information science, in Corpus 2 (C2) - academic journals mostly focused on marketing and economics. Co-authored publications constituted 42% of C1 and 63% of C2. The study showed that the research of the global book publishing market is led by interdisciplinary researchers, but rarely by international teams. Research limitations: The initial corpus of academic papers was narrowed down to 230 articles published in English between 2001 and 2018. The study did not include articles focusing on book markets in the countries that make only slight contributions to the global book publishing industry. The discipline classification adopted in the study follow that of the Scopus database. Originality/Value: This study provides insight into the research on the global publishing market and proves that it is interdisciplinary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main goal of this paper is to analyze how technological change affects the Spanish publishing industry and how it is adapting to the new digital environment. This work provides an averview of the situation of the Spanish publishing sector through the collection of data, mainly from secondary sources of information, both public and private, from 1996 to 2017, that involved the review of a large number of documents from different sources, the analysis of data obtained, and the generation of a time series allowing us to glimpse the state and evolution of digitalization in the Spanish publishing industry throughout these last twenty years. The paper refers to the new business models emerging as a result of digitization to, finally, close with some conclusions and limitations of the research. This study is not trying to be just a journey through the past, present and future of the spanish book industry in Spain, but it pretends to be the first step to continue investigating these and other aspects in a deeper way. This paper analyzes how technological change and digitalization in the Spanish publishing sector is challenging existing business models and encouraging publishers to modify their portfolios of products and competencies. A qualitative analysis (case study) of three Spanish publishers is carried out. The practical implications of the research are that digital products and services are still considered secondary to the analog book. On the other hand, the proportion of titles available in digital formats is still small. To all this, the lack of a common dominant design for digital publication is added, which represents an uncertainty for editors, to which must be added the lack of institutional support. For the time being, Spanish publishers are simply selling digital versions of their paper books on digital distribution platforms, trying to minimize risks by betting on positively contrasted works in the traditional paper-based business model. Book piracy is a significant problem throughout the world and particularly in emerging countries. Such a phenomenon is costly to all participants in the publishing supply chain. This paper aims to investigate factors that influence Vietnamese students' purchases of photocopied textbooks. The findings reveal that students' purchases are motivated by their perceived value, subjective norms representing social influence and the lack of regulation enforcement. Using these findings, this paper suggests interventions for policymakers, publishers, distributors and universities to limit the purchase of pirated textbooks as well as to improve the value of original textbooks. - Abstract
For years, the large publishing groups have been raising a growth strategy based on their territorial and linguistic expansion. For this they have resorted to the absorption of all types of companies, linked or not with their main business area, and the elimination of those less economically profitable divisions. The disappearance of Círculo de Lectores, belonging to the Planet Group, is part of these strategies. Victim of the lack of adaptation to the new digital context, he suffered from a system based on an obsolete model, designed for the paper environment and highly effective in it, but incompatible with the new practices of a society deeply digitized in cultural consumption. Also its editorial side, embodied in the Galaxia Gutenberg seal, and in the excellence of collections such as the one of Complete Works, has been affected by these movements, far from what Einaudi considered as the Yes edition: this is, the one that sought excellence, quality and innovation, and not necessaritly profitability. This article discusses the fundamentals of Círculo de Lectores and carries out an analysis of the circumstances of their disappearance in line with the strategies developed by the large publishing groups. The article describes a research project conducted in Sweden and its initial base-line results that were produced by investigating statistical data from general statistical sources, representative surveys o f the Swedish population, and from public and academic libraries. The project looks into the change introduced into the book sector by e-books. Sweden was chosen as a special case - a country with a high literacy level and high penetration of information technology into everyday life of people. A t the same time, the spread of e-books is at the very start and it seems that the diffusion of e-books, their production, distribution and use are affected by the problems characteristic of a typical small publishing markets. The authors present the goals of the project and the theoretical framework. The data were collected in 2012 and demonstrate the relatively low scale of e-book publishing and use. Libraries emerge as the main channel of access to e-books for readers. The usual problems of e-book production and distribution that are visible in other countries are observed in Sweden as well: e-books legally are not books, but services of licensed software and thus excluded from the privileges enjoyed by paper books; readers demand more e-books but are not ready to pay for them the same price as for traditional books and prefer to acquire them through free channels. Publishers seek to maintain the monopoly o f e-book distribution and fear piracy. Libraries lose independence of acquisition and collection management. The choice of e-books by readers is determined by access to technology, age and education as well as reading habits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article includes an overview of the development of e-publishing in Estonia. The treatment is based on the analysis and comparison of existing research, mainly student papers; statistical data from the database of Statistics Estonia and the National Library of Estonia, articles in the periodical press and homepages of various institutions. The beginning of the article presents the description of the publishing industry during the 2000s. In accordance with the development of economy the book production has moved from the peak in the mid-2000s to recession in 2008-2010. The declining market led to the decrease in print runs (since 2008) and book title production (since 2010). The number of publishers, however, increased even during the crisis. The small-language market is of no interest to international companies, so the book industry works on local capital. Estonia is characterised by early adoption and wide use of the Internet. The web publishing by organisations, associations and individuals is widespread since mid 1990s, but commercial publishers remained aside of this trend. As in many other European countries, especially small countries, the publishers were uncertain about the application of copyright in the digital environment and technological skill gaps. These worries were largerly overcome by the establishment of e-publishing service providers in 2010, which led to the take off in the publishing of e-books. The number of e-books produced and the sales have increased a number of times, but their share of the book market is rather marginal. The book buyers and readers still hold to traditional book form. The official cultural policy, however, favours e-books and supports different projects that provide free access to Estonian classical literature and modern authors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the state of the magazine industry in the US and offers research to show why publishers should shift their thinking from a print- or digital-first publishing strategy to a mobile-first publishing strategy. The publishing industry faces increasing challenges to generate a profit and grow their audience. These challenges are compounded by a difficult economy, the proliferation of new technological devices, and consumers’ changing reading habits. Mobile publishing offers new and expanding ways for the magazine industry to diversity income, expand readership, and position their titles for future growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how changes in the social environment of print media have affected the history of the Japanese publishing industry in the postwar period. Data on the circulation of books, magazines, and newspapers are analysed on a population basis. The results of these analyses show that per-capita circulation of these media increased almost monotonically until the 1980s, but then began to decrease after peaking in the 1990s. After conducting statistical correlation analyses, we conclude that per-capita circulation was affected by economic trends indicated by the GDP growth rate. Our analyses also show a positive correlation between the pace of change in per-capita book and magazine circulation, and this reciprocal relationship is investigated in detail. This paper explores the topic of electronic books (e-books) and the effect that these digital devices and other new technologies has on the publishing industry. Contemporary society often claims that the publishing industry is dying and that the innovation of the e-book will eventually sentence the printed book to death. But this study will show that such is not the case. While it is true that the world is undergoing a digital revolution, publishers today have not been left in the dust, because these firms have embraced electronic publishing (e-publishing). The invention of e-books opens a world of opportunities and since the e-book market is still in its growth stage, there is much work left to be done. As with any new venture, the industry faces certain challenges, such as piracy, but with tools like encryption, digital asset management (DAM), digital rights management (DRM), and digital object identifiers (DOI), publishers are well on the way to a solution. While it is safe to say that the digital revolution has forever changed the face of publishing, e-books could actually revitalize the industry. No one knows what the future of e-publishing will hold, but developments affect publishing houses, authors, and consumers alike. And while the ultimate fate of the printed book is yet unknown, for now, it is here to stay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
