Due to the costly and time-consuming traditional techniques, providing a low-cost, portability and flexibility diagnostic tool with the ability to monitor and detect various animal feed additive is highly demanded. Over the years, paper-based biosensors have emerged as point of care (POC) diagnostic, easy-to-use and miniaturized tools. However, they have been suffered from low sensitivity. Aptamer as appropriate bioreceptor can overcome the most common disadvantage of paper based sensor by increasing selectivity and sensitivity. In this study, a novel paper-based electrochemical aptasensor was successfully developed to detection of ractopamine (RAC). RAC concentration was evaluated using a designed three-electrode paper based biodevice system. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the engineered aptasensor provided good sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of RAC. Using proposed flexible sensor RAC was determined in the range of 0.001 µM to 100 mM which the lower limit of quantitation (LLOQ) was obtained as 0.01 µM. Finally, aptasensor was used to the monitoring of RAC in untreated human plasma specimens which LLOQ and linear range were 0.01 µM and 0.01 µM to 10 mM, respectively. We hope that the exploitation of aptamer in electrochemical paper based sensor will be able to broaden our understanding for developing the application of low-cost and portable biodevices for the sensitive and selective paper-based sensor to identify other chemical and biological compounds.

Because the traditional insulation paper state detection method has some shortcomings, this paper proposes a non-destructive detection method, which uses the texture feature value of insulation paper image to establish a relationship with the degree of polymerization (DP) of insulation paper state, and then indirectly estimates the aging state of insulation paper. Firstly, the insulation paper images in different aging states are collected, and the texture feature values of the images are extracted by gray histogram, gray level co-occurrence matrix and gray level run-length matrix; then, the texture feature values are selected by correlation; then, the validity of the selected texture feature values to represent the insulation paper state is verified by support vector machine (SVM); finally, the multiple linear regression method is used. The relationship between the degree of polymerization and the texture feature value is established and verified by the actual results. The results show that the texture feature value has a good fitting relationship with the degree of polymerization, which verifies the effectiveness of this method in evaluating the state of insulating paper.

The ageing status of the oil-paper insulation is closely related to the operation of the transformers. Recently, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is used to identify the ageing condition of oil-paper insulation for it is a more rapid and nondestructive detection than the traditional viscometry method. However, the identification accuracy of existing quantitative analysis method of NIRS are still insufficient. This paper proposed an improved Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) method to classify the spectra and to identify the ageing condition of the insulating paper. Based on DP measurement, the insulating paper specimens prepared in laboratory are divided into varying ageing groups. The principle of LDA method is introduced. The classic LDA method has been applied to identify the ageing status of specimens respectively from 4 ageing groups and 3 ageing groups. The results show that LDA has a better performance in classifying four groups than three groups. To achieve an accurate ageing condition identification with balanced accuracy of the model and enough categories of ageing status, the improved LDA method is proposed. The identification results show that the improved method has satisfactory performance and indicates great application potentials in the ageing assessment of the oil-paper impregnated insulation.

PurposeStatistical charts are an essential source of information in academic papers. Charts have an important role in conveying, clarifying and simplifying the research results provided by the authors, but they present some accessibility barriers for people with low vision. This article aims to evaluate the accessibility of the statistical charts published in the library and information science (LIS) journals with the greatest impact factor.Design/methodology/approachA list of heuristic indicators developed by the authors has been used to assess the accessibility of statistical charts for people with low vision. The heuristics have been applied to a sample of charts from 2019 issues of ten LIS journals with the highest impact factor according to the ranking of the JCR.FindingsThe current practices of image submission do not follow the basic recommended guidelines on accessibility like color contrast or the use of textual alternatives. On the other hand, some incongruities between the technical suggestions of image submission and their application in analyzed charts also emerged. The main problems identified are: poor text alternatives, insufficient contrast ratio between adjacent colors and the inexistence of customization options. Authoring tools do not help authors to fulfill these requirements.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample is not very extensive; nonetheless, it is representative of common practices and the most frequent accessibility problems in this context.Social implicationsThe heuristics proposed are a good starting point to generate guidelines for authors when preparing their papers for publication and to guide journal publishers in creating accessible documents. Low-vision users, a highly prevalent condition, will benefit from the improvements.Originality/valueThe results of this research provide key insights into low-vision accessibility barriers, not considered in previous literature and can be a starting point for their solution.

Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) and Electrospun Fiber-Based Biosensors (EFBs) have aroused the interest of the academy and industry due to their affordability, sensitivity, ease of use, robustness, being equipment-free, and deliverability to end-users. These features make them suitable to face the need for point-of-care (POC) diagnostics, monitoring, environmental, and quality food control applications. Our work introduces new and experienced researchers in the field to a practical guide for fibrous-based biosensors fabrication with insight into the chemical and physical interaction of fibrous materials with a wide variety of materials for functionalization and biofunctionalization purposes. This research also allows readers to compare classical and novel materials, fabrication techniques, immobilization methods, signal transduction, and readout. Moreover, the examined classical and alternative mathematical models provide a powerful tool for bioanalytical device designing for the multiple steps required in biosensing platforms. Finally, we aimed this research to comprise the current state of PADs and EFBs research and their future direction to offer the reader a full insight on this topic.

Prediction and detection of skin diseases have always been a challenging and critical task for health care professionals. There are many clinics and skin practitioners who are offering their services at exorbitant costs. At the same time, skin condition prevails in our country in every part. In the current scenario majority of the skincare practitioners are using traditional methods to diagnose the disease which may take a considerable amount of time. Skin Diseases are serious problems in recent times as it is a matter of environmental factors, socioeconomic factors, lack of full diet, etc. This paper is a comparative study about understanding various skin diseases related to normal skin issues as well as cosmetology. A comparison between oily, dry, and normal skin is also projected in this study. A survey of different papers is done on basis of technologies used, results with accuracy, ethical conduct, number of diseases diagnosed, datasets, etc are done.

Blotter papers seizures containing synthetic drugs have intensified over the last decades. These drugs were originally conceived as “legal” alternatives to traditional illicit drugs, designed to mimic their effects and circumvent control agencies. Reference methods for determining these substances on blotter papers are based on chromatographic techniques using mass spectrometry detection. However, these procedures are destructive, expensive, and time consuming. Some compounds are also thermolabile and not suitable for regular gas chromatography analyses. In this paper, two multivariate models were presented and incorporated in the routine of a forensic laboratory as a screening method. They were developed and validated using a representative dataset of 158 seizures analyzed by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and a partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model. The first model (model A) discriminates between samples with and without different types of drugs, and the second one (model B) discriminates between samples containing NBOMe and NBOH, two N-benzyl 2,5-dimethoxy substituted phenethylamine commonly incorporated into blotter papers. The proposed method is fast, non-destructive, and requires no sample preparation. Both models showed reliable results (misidentification errors < 10%), presented good results in a real forensic laboratory routine, and can be updated to include new drugs.

Such technologies could help disrupt transmission, sustain economies and preserve health and lives during widespread infection. In contrast, conventional nucleic acid diagnostic procedures require trained personnel, complex laboratories, expensive equipment, and protracted processing times. In this work, lyophilized cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) and toehold switch riboregulators are employed to develop a promising paper-based nucleic acid diagnostic platform activated simply by the addition of saliva. First, to facilitate distribution and deployment, an economical paper support matrix is identified and a mass-producible test cassette designed with integral saliva sample receptacles. Next, CFPS is optimized in the presence of saliva using murine RNase inhibitor. Finally, original toehold switch riboregulators are engineered to express the bioluminescent reporter NanoLuc in response to SARS-CoV-2 RNA sequences present in saliva samples. The biosensor generates a visible signal in as few as seven minutes following administration of 15 μL saliva enriched with high concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA sequences. The estimated cost of this test is less than 0.50 USD, which could make this platform readily accessible to both the developed and developing world. While additional research is needed to decrease the limit of detection, this work represents important progress toward developing a diagnostic technology that is rapid, low-cost, distributable and deployable at the point-of-care by a layperson.

We attempt to replicate 67 papers published in 13 well-regarded economics journals using author-provided replication files that include both data and code. Some journals in our sample require data and code replication files, and other journals do not require such files. Aside from 6 papers that use confidential data, we obtain data and code replication files for 29 of 35 papers (83%) that are required to provide such files as a condition of publication, compared to 11 of 26 papers (42%) that are not required to provide data and code replication files. We successfully replicate the key qualitative result of 22 of 67 papers (33%) without contacting the authors. Excluding the 6 papers that use confidential data and the 2 papers that use software we do not possess, we replicate 29 of 59 papers (49%) with assistance from the authors. Because we are able to replicate less than half of the papers in our sample even with help from the authors, we assert that economics research is usually not replicable. Escherichia coli has been known to cause a variety of infectious diseases. The conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a well-known method widely used to diagnose a variety of infectious diseases. This method is expensive and requires considerable time and effort to conduct and complete multiple integral steps. We previously proposed the use of paper-based ELISA to rapidly detect the presence of E. coli. This approach has demonstrated utility for point-of-care (POC) urinary tract infection diagnoses. Paper-based ELISA, while advantageous, still requires the execution of several procedural steps. Here, we discuss the design and experimental implementation of a turntable paper-based device to simplify the paper-based ELISA protocols for the detection of E. coli. In this process, antibodies or reagents are preloaded onto zones of a paper-based device and allowed to dry before use. We successfully used this device to detect E. coli with a detection limit of 105 colony-forming units (colony-forming unit [CFU])/mL.

Paper mills are among the most polluting industries, responsible for many organic and inorganic compounds emissions. The fibres electro-kinetic features strongly affect the ability to retain fillers since the fillers–fibres interactions are charge induced. The control and the prediction of these parameters would represent a precious aid for process management, allowing the fillers retention enhancement, a lower environmental impact and the paper sheet properties streamlining. The work presented deals with the implementation and training of four artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the prediction of the main electrochemical and physical features of cellulose pulp and paper. First, two ANNs predict the electrochemical parameters. Following, they were applied to predict the paper sheet properties and fillers retention. The neural models implemented showed outstanding prediction performance, with R2 in the order of 0.999 and a low mean error. The results demonstrate how Artificial Neural Networks may be a valuable instrument for paper mill pollutant reduction. However, they suggest a more inclusive investigation for a better fibres behaviour representation.

SBE21 Sustainable Built Heritage: Renovating Historic Buildings Towards a Low-Carbon Built Heritage -- 14 April 2021 through 16 April 2021 -- -- 173384, Historic libraries preserve cultural heritage values while housing rare manuscripts and paper-based collections. The collections in the libraries are deteriorated chemically, biologically and mechanically due to inappropriate indoor environment conditions such as temperature and relative humidity fluctuations and microbiological conditions. Apart from preserving vulnerable paper-based collections, accommodating of a considerable thermal comfort level for visitors is essential in historic libraries. The aim of this study is to analyse indoor environment of a historic library in terms of thermal comfort and preventive conservation of paper-based collections. Izmir National Library, built in 1933, is selected as a case study. Indoor air temperature, relative humidity and air velocity in the library were monitored with a one-year measurement campaign. Meanwhile, thermal comfort of the visitors was assessed with PMV/PPD indices and thermal sensation surveys. The results show that high chemical degradation risk is detected in the library while biological and mechanical degradations are in the low risk zone. On the other hand, 87% and 93% of the visitors feel thermally satisfied in heating and cooling seasons, respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The final quality of tissue paper depends on the parameters of the continuous transformation process and maintenance of rolls of a tissue paper machine. For a better quality, outer surfaces of the rolls must always be clean, and their roughness should be maintained in the same way. A Doctor Blade provides for such requirements. Our work is focused on the development of a pneumatic oscillator that moves a Doctor Blade in order to scrape the outer surfaces of the rolls. It is based on a low-friction double-effect cylinder with a through-rod. The integration of two limit switch valves, one for each head of the cylinder, and a smart pneumatic circuit to obtain a very low speed of the piston at constant load, represents the novelty of the proposed device. The piston of the cylinder allows for alternatively switching the limit switches that command the 5/2 air-operated pilot valve of the cylinder. The oscillator’s design, pneumatic circuit, and working principle are detailed. Experimental tests on the conceived limit switch and on the first prototype of the pneumatic oscillator validated the effectiveness of the proposed solution, the technical feasibility of the device, and the absence of stick-slip during the oscillatory motion at low speed.

In the last 10 years, paper-based electrochemical biosensors have gathered attention from the scientific community for their unique advantages and sustainability vision. The use of papers in the design the electrochemical biosensors confers to these analytical tools several interesting features such as the management of the solution flow without external equipment, the fabrication of reagent-free devices exploiting the porosity of the paper to store the reagents, and the unprecedented capability to detect the target analyte in gas phase without any sampling system. Furthermore, cost-effective fabrication using printing technologies, including wax and screen-printing, combined with the use of this eco-friendly substrate and the possibility of reducing waste management after measuring by the incineration of the sensor, designate these type of sensors as eco-designed analytical tools. Additionally, the foldability feature of the paper has been recently exploited to design and fabricate 3D multifarious biosensors, which are able to detect different target analytes by using enzymes, antibodies, DNA, molecularly imprinted polymers, and cells as biocomponents. Interestingly, the 3D structure has recently boosted the self-powered paper-based biosensors, opening new frontiers in origami devices. This review aims to give an overview of the current state origami paper-based biosensors, pointing out how the foldability of the paper allows for the development of sensitive, selective, and easy-to-use smart and sustainable analytical devices.

Paper-based devices have a wide range of applications in point-of-care diagnostics, environmental analysis, and food monitoring. Paper-based devices can be deployed to resource-limited countries and remote settings in developed countries. Paper-based point-of-care devices can provide access to diagnostic assays without significant user training to perform the tests accurately and timely. The market penetration of paper-based assays requires decreased device fabrication costs, including larger packing density of assays (i.e., closely packed features) and minimization of assay reagents. In this review, we discuss fabrication methods that allow for increasing packing density and generating closely packed features in paper-based devices. To ensure that the paper-based device is low-cost, advanced fabrication methods have been developed for the mass production of closely packed assays. These emerging methods will enable minimizing the volume of required samples (e.g., liquid biopsies) and reagents in paper-based microfluidic devices.

The metal casting industry, Nitikan is a micro business whose production process is carried out manually. The equipment used is simple and without considering the user's health. This can be seen in the product finishing process that uses a sanding machine. The equipment is not designed according to the user's posture so the operator bends in doing work movements, of course this is very risky to experience lower back pain injuries. This study aims to analyze the work activities of the finishing process using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) approach and design work tools that can be applied to improve work posture. The results of data processing and analysis obtained a Rapid Entire Body Assessment score on a sandpaper machine single head of 5 and a Rapid Upper Limb Assessment score of 4, the score indicates that the work position has the potential to experience a risk of low back pain, so there must be an improvement in work posture. Work posture improvement is done by designing a tool in the form of a sandpaper machine that takes into account ergonomic dimensions to reduce the risk of lower back injury. The final result after the improvement is obtained Rapid Entire Body Assessment score of 3 and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment score of 4. This shows that the risk of lower back injuries can be minimized.

The main problem for the expansion of the use of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices and, thus, their mass production is their inherent lack of fluid flow control due to its uncontrolled fabrication protocols. To address this issue, the first step is the generation of uniform and reliable microfluidic channels. The most common paper microfluidic fabrication method is wax printing, which consists of two parts, printing and heating, where heating is a critical step for the fabrication of reproducible device dimensions. In order to bring paper-based devices to success, it is essential to optimize the fabrication process in order to always get a reproducible device. Therefore, the optimization of the heating process and the analysis of the parameters that could affect the final dimensions of the device, such as its shape, the width of the wax barrier and the internal area of the device, were performed. Moreover, we present a method to predict reproducible devices with controlled working areas in a simple manner. Watermarks are key to retracing the origins of paper manuscripts and early printed books and to understanding the context in which they were produced. TEI-P5, one of the most commonly used XML standards for digital descriptions of text-bearing objects, offers the possibility to describe watermarks, but not yet in a sufficiently detailed and consistent manner. The present article introduces a TEI-P5 customization for the description of paper and watermarks based on the International Standard for the Description of Paper, Watermarks and Paper Moulds in Relational Databases (IPHN 2.1.1). This customization provides TEI users with tools to make detailed, structured and standardized descriptions of paper, watermarks, and paper moulds. Such descriptions have the potential to improve the communication and collaboration between the different scholars working on paper manuscripts and early printed books. Moreover, once organized into a database, they can be mined in order to determine the origin and circulation of paper types. Therefore, the present customization can represent a strong asset in the study of the origins and material contexts of paper documents, handwritten or printed.

Usually in the manufacture of beer by fermentation of barley, in both industrialized and developing countries significant amounts of organic solid waste are produced from barley straw. These possibly have an impact on the carbon footprint with an effect on global warming. According to this, it is important to reduce environmental impact of these solid residues, and an adequate way is the recycling using them as raw material for the elaboration of handmade paper. Therefore, it is required to manage this type of waste by analyzing the environmental impact, and thus be able to identify sustainable practices for the treatment of this food waste, evaluating its life cycle, which is a useful methodology to estimate said environmental impacts. It is because of this work shows the main results obtained using the life cycle analysis (LCA) methodology, to evaluate the possible environmental impacts during the waste treatment of a brewery located in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. The residues evaluated were barley straw, malt residues and spent grain, and at the end, barley straw was selected to determine in detail its environmental impact and its reuse, the sheets analyzed presented a grammage that varies from 66 g/m2 and 143 g/m2, resistance to burst was 117 to 145 kpa, with a crystallinity of 34.4% to 37.1%.

The fabrication of underwater devices is necessary for the exploration of water environments and interactions in the Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) field. However, there are fewer approaches to support prototyping used in water environments. The existing prototype methods lack systematic waterproof treatments and provide insufficient software for balance and buoyancy analysis. To address these limitations, we present ElectroPaper, a new approach for the design and fabrication of prototypes used in water environments (surface or beneath) with paper-based electronic interfaces with a crease layer, hardware distribution layer, and hollow-out layer to support physical properties, such as waterproofing, foldability, and conformability. The approach includes a computational design tool for assisting in balance analysis, three-dimensional (3D) model unfolding, and circuit drawing. We describe the design and fabrication process and provide several example applications to illustrate the feasibility and utility of our approach. ElectroPaper provides an inexpensive and effective medium for the fabrication of customized digital prototypes for water environment use.

The paper drying process has the highest level of energy consumption in the pulp and paper production process. Analysis and optimization of the energy system during the paper drying process is critical for improving the energy efficiency of the entire paper mill. In the existing model for the paper drying process, the solution requires accurate boundary conditions such as the air temperature and humidity of the pocket area and the cylinder surface temperature, which are very difficult to obtain in the papermaking process. This can result in significant deviations between the model solution and the actual production process. This paper focuses on the single-tier dryer cylinder-based paper drying process that has been widely used with high-speed papermaking machines in recent years. A mathematical model is proposed based on real-time data. The verification via industrial production demonstrates that the proposed model is reliable for the paper drying process. Based on the simulation results, two optimization operations have been proposed. The energy consumption decreases from 1.51 t steam/t paper to 1.44 t steam/t paper, 4.6% of the steam and 1.26 × 106 RMB can be saved for a medium-scale paper mill with the annual production capacity of 105 t paper.

Analytical strategies to ensure the quality and safety of food products without the need for skilled personnel are highly required. The simplicity of glucose strips for diabetes monitoring should be translated to the agri-food sector, ensuring easy evaluation of certain molecules and/or the freshness of a beverage/foodstuff. In addition to the well-known advantages that are characteristic of electroanalytical methods over other methods, paper-based materials are being used to further reduce the gap between complex laboratory testing and simple point-of-need testing. This article highlights some of the most recent advances in the development of paper-based electrochemical approaches for food surveillance, specifically focusing on the use of novel paper-based materials. Two examples are discussed: the development of a miniaturized biosensor realized on copy paper for the quantification of ethanol in commercial beers, and the measurement of ascorbic acid in food supplements within printed electronics supports. Paper-based materials have the potential to lower economic costs, simplify the operative tasks, and most importantly reduce waste generation. The continued combination of manufacturing methods and functional (smart) materials will facilitate the implementation of food analysis at the point of need.

Significance Populations living in remote rural communities would benefit from rapid, highly sensitive molecular, DNA-based diagnostics to inform the correct and timely treatment of infectious diseases. Such information is also becoming increasingly relevant in global efforts for disease elimination, where the testing of asymptomatic patients is now seen as being important for the identification of disease reservoirs. However, healthcare workers face practical and logistical problems in the implementation of such tests, which often involve complex instrumentation and centralized laboratories. Here we describe innovations in paper microfluidics that enable low-cost, multiplexed DNA-based diagnostics for malaria, delivered, in a first-in-human study, in schools in rural Uganda., Rapid, low-cost, species-specific diagnosis, based upon DNA testing, is becoming important in the treatment of patients with infectious diseases. Here, we demonstrate an innovation that uses origami to enable multiplexed, sensitive assays that rival polymerase chain reactions (PCR) laboratory assays and provide high-quality, fast precision diagnostics for malaria. The paper-based microfluidic technology proposed here combines vertical flow sample-processing steps, including paper folding for whole-blood sample preparation, with an isothermal amplification and a lateral flow detection, incorporating a simple visualization system. The combination of smartphone technology and colorimetric paper-based microfluidics can enable simple, inexpensive diagnostics. However, imaging colorimetric diagnostic results via smartphones currently requires accessories to mitigate the influence of variability in surrounding lighting conditions. Here, we present an accessory-free smartphone-based colorimetric imaging method that enlists the built-in LED light source to dominate ambient lighting in combination with background and colour rescaling. This simple approach enables quantitative measurements from paper-based tests by compensating for different environmental lighting conditions and is universally applicable with respect to phone models and manufacturers. We demonstrate the method with three dominant phone makes and models in a cell counting application with a paper-based yeast detection device. The detection results are in good agreement with cell counting using automated cell counters. Eliminating the need for make/model specific accessories, this approach helps realize the potential for low-cost, broadly applicable paper-based diagnostics.

Background Data papers have emerged as a powerful instrument for open data publishing, obtaining credit, and establishing priority for datasets generated in scientific experiments. Academic publishing improves data and metadata quality through peer review and increases the impact of datasets by enhancing their visibility, accessibility, and reusability. Objective We aimed to establish a new type of article structure and template for omics studies: the omics data paper. To improve data interoperability and further incentivize researchers to publish well-described datasets, we created a prototype workflow for streamlined import of genomics metadata from the European Nucleotide Archive directly into a data paper manuscript. Methods An omics data paper template was designed by defining key article sections that encourage the description of omics datasets and methodologies. A metadata import workflow, based on REpresentational State Transfer services and Xpath, was prototyped to extract information from the European Nucleotide Archive, ArrayExpress, and BioSamples databases. Findings The template and workflow for automatic import of standard-compliant metadata into an omics data paper manuscript provide a mechanism for enhancing existing metadata through publishing. Conclusion The omics data paper structure and workflow for import of genomics metadata will help to bring genomic and other omics datasets into the spotlight. Promoting enhanced metadata descriptions and enforcing manuscript peer review and data auditing of the underlying datasets brings additional quality to datasets. We hope that streamlined metadata reuse for scholarly publishing encourages authors to create enhanced metadata descriptions in the form of data papers to improve both the quality of their metadata and its findability and accessibility.

This paper describes approaches to the use of wearables and related monitoring and diagnostic tools to glean and present data to patients and their caregivers in the form of Personal Health Dashboard. Raw data from devices such as fitness watches, blood glucose and blood pressure monitors can be analyzed by machine learning algorithms ensembles over the cloud or at the edge, and the resulting patterns can be presented to allow for actionable responses. The advent of low-cost computational, sensing, monitoring and diagnostic tools allow for cost-effective solutions that can have wide adaptability. The paper draws from prior and ongoing research conducted by the team to present these positions in the advancement of healthcare.

As one of the precious intangible cultural heritages, traditional Chinese paper cutting has a long history and profound cultural connotation. In the digital age, traditional paper cutting is gradually moving towards digital paper cutting in order for better inherit and development. In the research of paper cutting digitalization, computer has been normally adopted to make two-dimensional paper cutting, to focus on the restoration of paper cutting process. There is still a little difficult for users who are not familiar with paper cutting; three-dimensional model has also been used to improve the picture effect, but it is not easy to show the characteristics of paper cutting with three-dimensional models. In order to address such an issue, this paper innovates the artistic style of digital paper cutting by combining paper cutting with common visual effects in modern 2D games, improves the efficiency of scene construction by writing automatic generation algorithms, and perfects the interactive mode of digital paper cutting by introducing natural interaction. In this way, users can participate in the process of creating paper cutting works, and creation of paper cutting works becomes simple and efficient benefiting from the automatic generation algorithm and natural interaction. Finally, by comparing to works of other paper cutting style, the works achieved by the solution proposed in this paper illustrates the advantages of digitalization in three aspects: artistic style, fast generation, and natural interaction.

Food safety and security have emerged as an issue of global public concern and trade implications. Food contamination and adulteration are major threats toward public health. Traditional and conventional benchtop technologies are being utilized all over the world for the identification and quantification of food contaminants and adulterants. But these technologies are expensive, labor-intensive, require highly skilled manpower, and resources for proper operation. There is an urgent need for developing point-of-care devices for food analysis and authentication, which can be cost-effective, reliable, simple to operate, and analyze. Bioactive paper is a promising tool that can be used over a wide range of applications involving food safety and security. Paper-based devices are typically rapid, cost-effective, and user-friendly, offering a high potential for rapid food safety analysis at point of need. In recent years, bioactive paper research has been a topic of great interest, as it is robust, simple, and affordable, and it can be an alternative to the traditional expensive instruments for detections, such as gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, or high-performance liquid chromatography. This article focuses on paper-based point-of-care (POC) devices that are being developed for food analysis and authentication. It discusses paper-based devices as developed for the detection of foodborne and waterborne pathogens, organic and inorganic toxins, pesticides, and illegal food additives. Finally, this study also sheds light on the future aspect of bioactive papers in the food industry, limitations, and way forward.

A simple cellulosic (C6H10O5)n substance, paper has many applications in addition to its use in writing, painting, and packaging. Papers have long been used in analytical chemistry; however, recently, their use in the development of cheaper portable sensors and energy storage devices has been explored. These paper-based environmental sensing devices are providing faster and simpler contaminant detection, along with the removal of sample storage and transportation. In addition to chemical pollutant detectors, the paper-based sensors are also being developed for the gases and volatile compounds. Such paper-based sensors will be very useful in rapid detection of toxic gases during any emergency. . These easy and cheap paper-based devices will be very useful for the developing countries, where environmental pollution concentration is very high and the sophisticated analytical laboratories are not easily accessible. Along with the exponentially increasing in pollution level, our energy demands have also increased by the same pace. Modern-day electronic devices and electric vehicles need robust energy storage devices, and our conventional batteries are not efficient for it. Therefore the supercapacitor has emerged as a solution to this problem; it is a rechargeable, high energy density and quick-release energy storage device, and the use of paper in its development let it to be used in deformable electronic devices.

This chapter describes the transparent paper and its operative and theoretical contribute to architects’ education and practice between 19th and 20th century. Dedicated literature on the topic is currently lacking and many of the sources analyzed refer to impressions and individual attitudes. Anyway, the chapter provides a first, deductive reconstruction of the multifaceted relationship between architects’ and transparent paper, a favorite medium. After an historical summary on the techniques for manufacturing, it overviews how the practices of designing, drawing and reproducing were affected by the diffusion of cheap transparent paper. It analyses the use of transparent paper in the architects’ daily practice and the diffusion of layer-structured analysis and design tools it inspired, in parallel with the mounting quest for transparency in architecture and media. Transparent paper is then analyzed as a peculiar medium and analogic design environment capable of addressing the choices of the architects. The chapter provides insights about how a new tool is first used as a substitute of the former, generally enhancing efficiency and results, and only later suggests peculiar uses that brings to an actual step forward in the way of thinking and practicing. It also suggests how any further instrumental development, like the CAD mimicking and taking the place of drafting on tracing, can promote a better knowledge of the previous practices.

This article considers the severe co-channel interference caused by the efficient use of spectrum by multiple beams combined with full-frequency multiplexing. After establishing a forward link model that considers severe rainfall attenuation in higher frequency bands such as Ka, the classic low-complexity precoding algorithm for zero-forcing is improved, and a regularized zero-forcing precoding algorithm considering the influence of system noise is proposed. Based on the dirty paper coding idea, a low-complexity dirty paper regularization zero-forcing precoding algorithm is proposed, which maximizes the signal-to-interference and noise ratio, thereby increasing throughput.

It is a controlled method that is an alternative to other highly aggressive procedures that have been applied to cellulose based media. Its main novelty is its intrinsic lighting characteristics which guarantee uniformity and avoid heating the paper. The results of testing this new tool were compared to those of bleaching with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Each of the two methods was applied to five different types of widely used paper: Arches and Somerset (brands serving for engraving and digital printing), Ingres (drawing), press-type (magazines and newspapers) and Bible-type (historical documents). Once characterised by physico-mechanical, chemical and optical parameters (grammage, thickness, specular gloss, optical properties, air permeance, tensile properties, determining the pH of both surface and aqueous extracts), the different papers were bleached by the two methods according to pre-established criteria. The ultimate goal of the paper is to facilitate the move towards arriving at an ideal definition for both concepts.Design/methodology/approachThis paper takes the “explanation building” review approach in providing prescriptive guidelines to researchers and industry practitioners. The aim of the review is to draw upon existing studies to identify, describe and find application of principles in a real-world context.FindingsThe paper highlights the definitional challenges surrounding digital engineering and BIM in Australia, to evoke a debate on BIM and digital engineering boundaries, how and why these two concepts may be linked, and how they relate to emerging concepts.Originality/valueThis is the first scholarly attempt to clarify the definition of digital engineering and address the confusion between the concepts of BIM and digital engineering.

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, so-called μPADs, were presented for the first time by Whitesides and colleagues in 2007. Since then, several research groups have focused on designing, synthesizing, and investigating the role of microfluidic paper-based devices in different applications including biosensors, drug delivery, gene delivery, and so on. In this chapter, we focused on different aspects of them, to provide an applicable perspective as well as review the recent advances in this field.
