Abstract Ecological water replenishment is an important measure for conserving water sources and improving the water environment. To explore the evolution and causes of groundwater chemistry after ecological water replenishment in the Jialu River, this study utilized groundwater monitoring data from 2015 to 2019 following ecological water replenishment. Various methods, including Piper’s trilinear diagram, Gibbs diagram, principal component analysis, and ion ratio analysis, were employed for research purposes. The results indicate that (1) since the implementation of ecological water replenishment in the Jialu River, there has been a general downwards trend in total dissolved solids (TDS) in groundwater. The dominant cation in groundwater is Ca2+, whereas HCO3 − is the dominant anion. The concentration of cations in groundwater has generally decreased, with noticeable reductions in SO4 2− and Cl− concentrations in the upper reaches of the recharge river contributing to improved groundwater quality. (2) A comparison with 2015 reveals a gradual transition at sampling points from chemical types such as HCO3-Ca·Mg and HCO3·Cl–Ca·Mg to an ecological water replenishment chemical type (HCO3-Ca).

ABSTRACTThe South-to-North Water Diversion Project Middle Route (SNWD-MR) annually diverts hundreds of millions of cubic meters of water from the Danjiangkou Reservoir to Beijing, significantly impacting the regional groundwater cycle. To conserve water resources, the government has implemented ecological water replenishment (EWR) in some water systems. This study aimed to study the coupled process of groundwater dynamics and land subsidence (LS) in Yongding River (YDR) basin (Beijing section) following the implementation of the SNWD-MR and EWR. First, an Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time series technique was used to detect spatial and temporal distributions of surface displacement between 2015 and 2020 based on satellite images from Sentinel-1A/B. The results indicated a predominant LS deceleration trend during the InSAR observation period. The area with subsidence velocity below 20 mm/yr decreased significantly by 18.6% after SNWD-MR and EWR (from 2016 to 2020). Then, groundwater level fluctuations during the InSAR observation period were analyzed using groundwater measurement well data. Over 60% of these wells showed a rebound in groundwater levels after the implementation of SNWD-MR and EWR. The polynomial distribution lag model (PDL) revealed the association between LS and groundwater level changes, depicting both short- and long-term lag effect. The results showed significant spatial and temporal heterogeneity on the short- and long-term response between groundwater level change and regional subsidence. In addition, we calculated the differential subsidence slope based on the InSAR-derived LS and analyzed its impact on the river slope after SNWD-MR and EWR. The results show that two sections with significant severe differential subsidence slope occur between 0 and 14,000 m and between 54,000 and 78,000 m along the YDR. The slope change caused by LS may reduce the conveyance capacity of surface canals, and more attention should be paid in those two sections. These findings have an important scientific significance for management strategy for LS control against the background of SNWD-MR and EWR.

Water replenishment is an important measure for maintaining and improving the aquatic environmental quality of lakes. The problems of water quality deterioration and water shortage can be alleviated by introducing water of higher quality. However, the mechanism of water replenishment in the improvement of the water quality and trophic status of lakes remains unclear. This study investigated water replenishment in Wuliangsuhai Lake (WLSHL) from 2011 to 2021 by collecting seasonal water samples and conducting laboratory analyses. Water replenishment was found to be capable of significantly improving lake water quality and alleviating eutrophication. It is worth noting that single long-term water replenishment measures have limitations in improving the water quality and trophic status. The whole process was divided into three stages according to the water quality and trophic status, namely the buffer period, decline period, and stable period. During the buffer period, the water quality and trophic status showed only slight improvement because of the small amount of water replenishment and the low proportion of higher-quality water from the Yellow River. In the decline period, with increasing water replenishment, the proportion of higher-quality water from the Yellow River gradually increased, leading to the most significant and stable degree of improvement. In the stable period, increases in the amount of water replenishment had little effect on improving the water quality and trophic status, which is attributable to the balance between internal pollutants (lake water–sediment), and the balance between internal-external pollutants (lake water–irrigation return flow + Yellow River water). On the premise of stable water quality, with eutrophication control as the management goal, the optimal water replenishment would be approximately 10.58 ×108 m3. Further necessary measures for solving aquatic environmental problems include the combination of sediment dredging, optimization of the water replenishment route, and implementation of quality management in water replenishment.

Ecological water replenishment (EWR) is an important strategy for river restoration globally, but timely evaluation of its ecological effects at a large spatiotemporal scale to further adjust the EWR schemes is of great challenge. Here, we examine the impact of EWR on microeukaryotic plankton communities in three distinct river ecosystems through environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. The three ecosystems include a long-term cut-off river, a short-term connected river after EWR, and long-term connected rivers. We analyzed community stability by investigating species composition, stochastic and deterministic dynamics interplay, and ecological network robustness. We found that EWR markedly reduced the diversity and complexity of microeukaryotic plankton, altered their community dynamics, and lessened the variation within the community. Moreover, EWR disrupted the deterministic patterns of community organization, favoring dispersal constraints, and aligning with trends observed in naturally connected rivers. The shift from an isolated to a temporarily connected river appeared to transition community structuring mechanisms from deterministic to stochastic dominance, whereas, in permanently connected rivers, both forces concurrently influenced community assembly. The ecological network in temporarily connected rivers post-EWR demonstrated significantly greater stability and intricacy compared to other river systems. This shift markedly bolstered the resilience of the ecological network. The eDNA metabarcoding insights offer a novel understanding of ecosystem resilience under EWR interventions, which could be critical in assessing the effects of river restoration projects throughout their life cycle.

Aquaponics offers a simple conclusive solution to the food and environmental crisis around the world. This paper presents a comparative analysis of standard aquaponics with vermiponics (aquaponics with earthworms) before and after applying an optimal freshwater replenishment. Fish and plants were grown on a standard aquaponics testbed and a vermiponics testbed for 3 months each, initially without water replenishment, and then with 19% replenishment based on the fishtank volume. Water quality and environmental data were monitored, collected and processed using sensors and internet of things (IoT) devices. Daily growth analysis, the mean productivity of both testbeds before and after replenishment, the percentage of productivity difference and the general productivity comparison between standard and vermiponics testbeds were determined. Results showed an enhanced productivity of 2.83% and 5.54% for the standard testbed and the vermiponics testbed, respectively, when replenishment was applied. The yield improvement after replenishment was proven to be statistically significant, with p < 0.05 reassuring the impact of water replenishment. This research contributes to the understanding of the impact of water replenishment in aquaponics and vermiponics systems. Moreover, it provides insights into the effect of earthworms on both systems’ yield productivity.

This study investigates the effects of water quality improvements under various water replenishment conditions of the Nanfei River, aiming to identify an optimal scheme that maximizes ecological and environmental benefits. A numerical simulation that integrates water quantity and quality was used to model the Nanfei River. The calibrated and validated model simulated the water quality response in the river's main stream under different replenishment pathways and scales. Results show that high-quality water inputs from the Chuhe Main Canal significantly improve the river's water quality, with larger replenishment volumes enhancing this effect. The Banqiao River tributary, located upstream of the Nanfei's urban reach, provides the best overall ecological improvements to the main stream when replenished. Simultaneous inputs from the Ershibu and Dianbu Rivers improve tributary water quality but may negatively impact upstream improvements in the main stream. Therefore, coordination between systems is crucial for effective regulation. The study recommends prioritizing the replenishment of the Banqiao River for optimal water quality and ecosystem benefits. Identifying the influence of heavy precipitation and ecological water replenishment (EWR) on groundwater resources is essential for groundwater resources management and risk prevention. This study innovatively developed a groundwater resource analysis and prediction model integrated with the water level fluctuation method, correlation analysis, and machine learning method under the influence of heavy precipitation and EWR. Water level fluctuation method results showed that compared with January 1, 2021, the groundwater resources of the study area increased 4.46 × 108 m3 on August 28. Compared with small flow of EWR, heavy precipitation was the main contributor to the rise in the groundwater level. Correlation analysis found that elevation, specific yield, and permeability coefficient show positive correlations with groundwater resource recharge. Machine learning results showed that among the water level prediction models of 35 monitoring wells, extreme gradient boosting (XGB) and random forest (RF) performed best in 30 wells and five wells, respectively. The increase in groundwater storage predicted deviated from the actual value by only 0.6 × 107 m3 (prediction bias of 1.3%), indicating that the model prediction performance was good under the heavy precipitation condition. This study can help to better understand the change trend of groundwater resources under the conditions of heavy precipitation and EWR. HIGHLIGHTS Through hydrology, statistics, and machine learning, groundwater changes under the dual effects of heavy precipitation and ecological water replenishment are studied.; A machine learning model is developed to predict the groundwater level and storage under heavy precipitation scenarios.; XGB and RF models well predicted the groundwater change the next day, and the prediction deviation was only 1.3%.;

Emergency ecological water replenishment(EEWR) has become a major strategy for recovering degraded wetland ecosystems worldwide. However, the actual replenishment process mainly depended on the tradeoff and experience between the managers of Taoer River and Xianghai Wetland, which is very random and lacks theoretical guidance. Thus, there is urge to assessing water replenishment effect on wetland and help to optimize the process. With contrasting results as different ecosystem elements respond differently, the optimization of water replenishment process should be based on the improvement of the ecosystem as whole rather than its separate elements. However, the dynamic monitoring of biotic and abiotic factors to reveal the complex relationships underlying their response can be challenging. Based on 6 years’ series data of migratory birds and environmental factors of Xianghai Wetland, which started emergency ecological water replenishment since 2004 and occurred frequently since 2011, the broader ecosystem response to water replenishment was analyzed using a multiple paths regression model and proposed an optimized scheme. The results showed that bird diversity was positively influenced by the increase in water area and vegetation was induced by ecological water replenishment. While the response of bird abundance to water replenishment varied with time, adequate open water in March was found to have a positive relationship with abundance by promoting vegetation germination and the reproduction of benthic organisms. High flow levels in the wet season (June–August) can negatively affect waterbird abundance by rapidly increasing water levels and inhibiting plant respiration, which leads to the reduction in feeding efficiency of waterbirds and biomass accumulation. Therefore, the existing ecological water replenishment time (May–September) is not suitable for bird abundance and should be advanced to spring (March–April). Given the antagonistic effect of flow on diversity and abundance, the total replenished water should be approximately 100 million m3. To avoid the negative influence of high water in the wet season, the allocation of water could be 0.3, 0.3, 0.2, and 0.2 million m3 in April, May, September, and October, respectively. These results scientifically support wetland protection and management.

In response to the issues of severe coastal pollution and exacerbated eutrophication, it is crucial to consider characteristics such as small flow in small coastal urban watersheds and water of low quality when implementing water replenishment measures. The selection of appropriate constraints and methods for calculating the ecological water replenishment (EWR) is the top priority. Here we present a calculation model appropriate for pin down the range of EWR in small coastal watersheds. Taking four of the eastern regions of Xiamen City as examples, the minimum and maximum EWR are independently computed based on the envelope curve and the restriction of the estuarine area's environmental capacity. Rational results are achieved with the approaches of Tennant as well as landscape water requirement, and it shows that the range of EWR for the four watersheds is 1.77×106 – 12.41×106 m3. The calculation model proposed in this paper has greater environmental feasibility from the perspective of the river channel demand and coastal environmental protection. Additionally, it also can provide a reference for EWR plans for urban rivers in coastal regions.

Lakes are an important component of the global water cycle and aquatic ecosystem. Lake water quality improvement have always been a hot topic of concern both domestically and internationally. Noncompliant outflow water quality frequently occurs, especially for lakes that rely mainly on irrigation return flow as their water source. External water replenishment to improve the water quality of lakes is gradually being recognized as a promising method, which however, is also a controversial method. Lake managers, in the case of constant controversy, hesitate about the appropriateness of lake water replenishing. Thus, taking Lake Ulansuhai in China as an example, this study aimed to construct a lake hydrodynamic and water quality model, under the constraint of multiple boundary conditions, that has sufficient simulation accuracy, and to simulate and analyze the changes in COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and TN (Total Nitrogen) concentrations in the lake area before and after water replenishment, and explore whether water replenishment was an effective method for improving lake water quality. The results showed that when the roughness value of Lake Ulansuhai was 0.02, the TN degradation coefficient K was 0.005/d, and the COD degradation coefficient K was 0.01/d; the simulation and measured values had the best fit, and the built model is reasonable and reliable can be used to simulate lake water quality changes. By external water replenishment lasting 140 days in the water volume of 4.925 × 108 m³, the COD and TN concentrations in Lake Ulansuhai could be stabilized at the Class V water quality requirement, which helped improve the self-purification ability of the lake area. Water replenishment was proved to be an effective method for improving the water quality of the lake, but water replenishment is only an emergency measure. Lake water replenishment is more applicable to areas with abundant water resources. External source control and internal source reduction of lake pollution and protection of lake water ecology are the main ways to improve lake water quality for water-deficient areas under the rigid constraints of water resources. In the future, key technologies for reducing and controlling pollution in irrigation areas, construction of lake digital twin platforms, and active promotion of lake legislation work should be the main research direction for managing the lake water environment.

Heat stress poses a significant threat to maize, especially when combined with drought. Recent research highlights the potential of water replenishment to ameliorate grain weight loss. However, the mitigating mechanisms of heat in drought stress, especially during the crucial early grain-filling stage, remain poorly understood. We investigated the mechanism for mitigating heat in drought stress by water replenishment from the 12th to the 32nd days after silking in a controlled greenhouse experiment (Exp. I) and field trial (Exp. II). A significant reduction in grain weight was observed in heat stress compared to normal conditions. When water replenishment was applied to increase soil water content (SWC) under heat stress, the grain yield exhibited a notable increase ranging from 28.4 to 76.9%. XY335 variety was used for transcriptome sequencing to analyze starch biosynthesis and amino acid metabolisms in Exp. I. With water replenishment, the transcripts of genes responsible for trehalose 6-phosphate phosphates (TPP), alpha-trehalase (TRE), ADP-glcpyrophosphorylase, and starch synthase activity were stimulated. Additionally, the expression of genes encoding TPP and TRE contributed to an enhanced conversion of trehalose to glucose. This led to the conversion of sucrose from glucose-1-phosphate to ADP-glucose and ADP-glucose to amylopectin, ultimately increasing starch production by 45.1%. Water replenishment to boost SWC during heat stress also elevated the levels of essential amino acids in maize, including arginine, serine, tyrosine, leucine, glutamic acid, and methionine, providing valuable support to maize plants in adversity. Field trials further validated the positive impact of water replenishment on SWC, resulting in a notable increase in grain yield ranging from 7.1 to 9.2%. Over the last twenty years, the number of projects aimed at river restoration and rehabilitation increased significantly. In the city it is impossible to provide full river restoration, but at the same time it is possible to create a comfortable natural environment both for flora and fauna and for the citizens. In our work it was assessed the possibility of the floodplain restoration by the water replenishment of the dry old riverbed during the vegetation season on the example of the river inside the city. The simulation of the current state allowed to verify the main parameters of the model with the existing observations of the water levels in the river and lake and water levels in the wells located in the park. The river – floodplain interaction was simulated: floodplain was separated from the river by the flood control dyke, the water replenishment of the lake and the old riverbed was due to seepage (current state); the connection of the floodplain with the river by the culvert and the replenishment of the lake and the old riverbed with surface river water. The simulation showed that the lake isolated from the river is filled to a depth of not more than 0.5 m, the old riverbed is filled with water only during spring floods. The water balance calculations of the lake showed that in the conditions of isolation from the river, the lake volume is significantly affected by precipitation and evaporation from the lake water surface area. The connection of the lake with the river surface water reduces the impact of the vertical components of the water balance, at the same time increases the seepage losses from the lake because of the water level raising. The connection of the river with the floodplain makes it possible to replenish the old riverbed and the lake in the mean year, but in the dry years the water level in the lake does not allow to replenish the old riverbed during the vegetation season. Calculations showed that to be able to keep the constant water level in the lake and old riverbed, it is necessary to increase the water level in the lake.

With global climate change and extreme weather events, water scarcity and environmental degradation are becoming increasingly prominent. Ecological replenishment is one important measure to enhance water quality in reservoirs. To address the severe pollution and ecological degradation problems of the Luhun Reservoir, this paper uses MIKE21 software to construct a coupled hydrodynamic-water quality model. Six recharge scenarios were designed to compare and explore the enhancement of reservoir water quality for these scenarios. The water quality status of these options was evaluated using the single-factor index method and the combined pollution index method. The results show that due to the ecological replenishment, the pollutant concentration leads the phenomenon of gradient diffusion to the center of the reservoir, and the average improvement rate of water quality is up to 40.22%. Schemes 2 and 5 have the lowest integrated pollution index. The most significant improvement in water quality was achieved at the same total recharge conditions, using 0.5 times the flow rate and two times the recharge time of the actual recharge project. The study results provide theoretical and technical support for the future management of the reservoir water environment.
