Open heart surgery requires a proper understanding of the endocardial surface of the heart and vascular structures. While modern four-dimensional (4D) imaging enables excellent dynamic visualization of the blood pool, endocardial surface anatomy has not routinely been assessed. 4D image data were post-processed using commercially available virtual reality (VR) software. Using thresholding, the blood pool was segmented dynamically across the imaging volume. The segmented blood pool was further edited for correction of errors due to artifacts or inhomogeneous signal intensity. Then, a surface shell of an even thickness was added to the edited blood pool. When the cardiac valve leaflets and chordae were visualized, they were segmented separately using a different range of signal intensity for thresholding. Using an interactive cutting plane, the endocardial surface anatomy was reviewed from multiple perspectives by interactively applying a cutting plane, rotating and moving the model. In conclusions, dynamic three-dimensional (3D) endocardial surface imaging is feasible and provides realistic simulated views of the intraoperative scenes at open heart surgery. As VR is based on the use of all fingers of both hands, the efficiency and speed of postprocessing are markedly enhanced. Although it is limited, visualization of the cardiac valve leaflets and chordae is also possible.

Near-surface seismic structure, particularly the shear wave velocity (Vs), can strongly affect local site response, and should be accurately estimated for ground motion prediction during seismic hazard assessment. The Imperial Valley (California), occupying the southern end of the Salton Trough, is a seismically active basin with thick surficial lacustrine sedimentary deposits. In this study, we utilize ambient noise records and local earthquake events for high-resolution near-surface characterization and site effect estimation with an unlit fiber-optic telecommunication infrastructure (dark fiber) in Imperial Valley by using the distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technique. We apply ambient noise interferometry to retrieve coherent surface waves from DAS records, and evaluate performances of three different surface wave methods on DAS ambient noise dispersion imaging. We develop a quality control workflow to improve the dispersion measurement of noisy portions of the DAS data set by using a data selection strategy. Using the joint inversion of both the fundamental mode and higher overtones of Rayleigh waves, a high resolution two-dimensional (2D) Vs structure down to 70 m depth is obtained. We successfully achieve an improved Vs30 (the time-averaged shear-wave velocity in the top 30 m) model with higher spatial-resolution and reliability compared to the existing community model for the area. We also explore the potential for utilizing DAS earthquake events for site amplification estimation. The preliminary results reveal a clear anti-correlation between the approximated site response and the Vs30 profile. Our results indicate the potential utility of DAS deployed on dark fiber for near-surface characterization in appropriate contexts.

Background: The utilization of three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging for facial anthropometry is a significant asset for patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery. Notably, there have been recent advancements in smartphone technology that enable 3D surface imaging.In this study, anthropometric assessments of the face were performed using a smartphone and a sophisticated 3D surface imaging system. Methods: 30 healthy volunteers (15 females and 15 males) were included in the study. An iPhone 14 Pro (Apple Inc., USA) using the application 3D Scanner App (Laan Consulting Corp., USA) and the Vectra M5 (Canfield Scientific, USA) were employed to create 3D surface models. For each participant, 19 anthropometric measurements were conducted on the 3D surface models. Subsequently, the anthropometric measurements generated by the two approaches were compared. The statistical techniques employed included the paired t-test, paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Bland–Altman analysis, and calculation of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: All measurements showed excellent agreement between smartphone-based and Vectra M5-based measurements (ICC between 0.85 and 0.97). Statistical analysis revealed no statistically significant differences in the central tendencies for 17 of the 19 linear measurements. Despite the excellent agreement found, Bland–Altman analysis revealed that the 95% limits of agreement between the two methods exceeded ±3 mm for the majority of measurements. Conclusion: Digital facial anthropometry using smartphones can serve as a valuable supplementary tool for surgeons, enhancing their communication with patients. However, the proposed data suggest that digital facial anthropometry using smartphones may not yet be suitable for certain diagnostic purposes that require high accuracy.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the inter-fraction reproducibility and intra-fraction stability of breast radiotherapy using voluntary deep-inspiration breath hold (DIBH) and free breathing (FB) based on an optical surface imaging system (OSIS). Methods Seventeen patients (510 breath-hold sessions) treated using a field-in-field (FiF) technique and twenty patients (600 breath-free sessions) treated with a volume-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) technique were included in this retrospective study. All the patients were positioned with the guidance of CBCT and OSIS, and also monitored with OSIS throughout the whole treatment session. Eight setup variations in three directions were extracted from the treatment reports of OSIS for all sessions and were subsequently manually introduced to treatment plans, resulting in a total of 296 perturbed plans. All perturbed plans were recalculated, and the dose volume histograms (DVH) for the target and organs at risk (OAR) were analyzed. Results The OSIS and CBCT for both DIBH and FB treatments showed a good agreement of less than 0.30 cm in each direction. The intra-fraction respiratory motion data during DIBH were −0.06 ± 0.07 cm, 0.12 ± 0.15 cm, and 0.12 ± 0.12 cm in the lateral, longitudinal, and vertical directions, respectively; for FB, the respiratory motion data were −0.02 ± 0.12 cm, 0.08 ± 0.18 cm, and 0.14 ± 0.20 cm, respectively. For the target, DIBH plans were more sensitive to setup errors; the mean deviations in D95 for CTV were 39.78 Gy–40.17 Gy for DIBH and 38.46 Gy–40.52 Gy for FB, respectively. For the OARs, the mean deviations of V10, V20, and Dmean to the heart; V5, V20, and Dmean to the ipsilateral lung; and Dmean to the breast were lower for the FB plan compared with the DIBH plan. Conclusion Based on OSIS, our results indicate that both DIBH and FB can provide good reproducibility in the inter-fractions and stability in the intra-fractions. When the patient respiratory motion is large, the FB technology has greater possibility for the undercoverage of the target volume, while DIBH technology is more likely to result in increases in dose to OARs (the lung, heart, and contralateral breast).

Abstract In the realm of radiation therapy, a conspicuous obstacle lies in the dearth of external observation concerning radiation beams aimed at the patient. While real-time monitoring of such beams on the patient's surface during therapy holds promise, the imaging of particle beams has thus far proven to be a formidable task. Here, we show our discovery of polyester fabrics and cloths as auspicious scintillating materials, ideally suited for the visualization of radiation beams upon the patient's surface. The light output of polyester fabrics ranged from 10 to 20% of that observed in plastic scintillators. When exposed to spot scanning proton beams, clear beam spots emerged on the surface of the polyester cloths. The movement of these scanning beams was effectively captured using a CMOS camera in a light-shield-free with lights-off environment. The resulting images provided a means for evaluating spills of the proton beams. The inherent flexibility of polyester fabrics and clothing enhances their appeal for applications in the intricate landscape of radiation therapy, promising a bright future for surface beam imaging endeavors.

A great number of chemical and mechanical phenomena, ranging from catalysis to friction, are dictated by the atomic-scale structure and properties of material surfaces. Yet, the principal tools utilized to characterize surfaces at the atomic level rely on strict environmental conditions such as ultrahigh vacuum and low temperature. Results obtained under such well-controlled, pristine conditions bear little relevance to the great majority of processes and applications that often occur under ambient conditions. Here, we report true atomic-resolution surface imaging via conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) under ambient conditions, performed at high scanning speeds. Our approach delivers atomic-resolution maps on a variety of material surfaces that comprise defects including single atomic vacancies. We hypothesize that atomic resolution can be enabled by either a confined, electrically conductive pathway or an individual, atomically sharp asperity at the tip-sample contact. Using our method, we report the capability of in situ charge state manipulation of defects on MoS2 and the observation of an exotic electronic effect: room-temperature charge ordering in a thin transition metal carbide (TMC) crystal (i.e., an MXene), α-Mo2C. Our findings demonstrate that C-AFM can be utilized as a powerful tool for atomic-resolution imaging and manipulation of surface structure and electronics under ambient conditions, with wide-ranging applicability.

Linac-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) with planning target volume (PTV) margins <1 mm has become increasingly common in recent years. Optical surface imaging for surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) is often used for intra-fraction motion monitoring during these treatments to facilitate the use of a smaller PTV margin by providing real-time quantitative patient positioning information. However, rotating the couch introduces errors to SGRT-reported translations and rotations that can be problematic for SRS treatments with non-coplanar arcs and very small PTV margins. This work presents a novel approach for decreasing the magnitude of these errors by performing a pre-treatment dry run and capturing reference surfaces with the SGRT system at each couch angle included in the treatment plan. Time from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to treatment initiation and total treatment session time were reviewed for 30 single-fraction brain SRS cases treated using this technique to determine the effect of including the dry run on treatment session times. Out of the 30 cases treated between April 2023 and January 2024, 23 treatments required only a single CBCT prior to treatment, with no additional mid-treatment imaging required to verify patient positioning after motion. The median time between CBCT and treatment initiation was 7.98 minutes (interquartile range (IQR) = 7.28 to 8.93 minutes). The median time from CBCT to treatment completion was 15.43 minutes (IQR = 13.67 to 21.97 minutes). In the six patients that required one additional CBCT, the treatment session times ranged from 24.32 to 32.83 minutes. There was one patient who required three mid-treatment CBCTs, and the treatment session time was 67.87 minutes. Abstract Several new systems for three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging of the face have become available to assess changes following orthognathic or facial surgery. Before they can be implemented in practice, their reliability and validity must be established. Our aim, therefore, was to study the intra- and inter-system reliability and validity of 3dMD (stereophotogrammetry), Artec Eva and Artec Space Spider (both structured light scanners). Intra- and inter-system reliability, expressed in root mean square distance, was determined by scanning a mannequin’s head and the faces of healthy volunteers multiple times. Validity was determined by comparing the linear measurements of the scans with the known distances of a 3D printed model. Post-processing errors were also calculated. Intra-system reliability after scanning the mannequin’s head was best with the Artec Space Spider (0.04 mm Spider; 0.07 mm 3dMD; 0.08 mm Eva). The least difference in inter-system reliability after scanning the mannequin’s head was between the Artec Space Spider and Artec Eva. The best intra-system reliability after scanning human subjects was with the Artec Space Spider (0.15 mm Spider; 0.20 mm Eva; 0.23 mm 3dMD). The least difference in inter-system reliability after scanning human subjects was between the Artec Eva and Artec Space Spider. The most accurate linear measurement validity occurred with the Artec Space Spider. The post-processing error was 0.01 mm for all the systems. The Artec Space Spider is the most reliable and valid scanning system.

Digitalizing all aspects of dental care is a contemporary approach to ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes. Ongoing advancements in 3D face acquisition have been driven by continuous research on craniofacial structures and treatment effects. An array of 3D surface-imaging systems are currently available for generating photorealistic 3D facial images. However, choosing a purpose-specific system is challenging for clinicians due to variations in accuracy, reliability, resolution, and portability. Therefore, this review aims to provide clinicians and researchers with an overview of currently used or potential 3D surface imaging technologies and systems for 3D face acquisition in craniofacial research and daily practice. Through a comprehensive literature search, 71 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were included in the qualitative analysis, investigating the hardware, software, and operational aspects of these systems. The review offers updated information on 3D surface imaging technologies and systems to guide clinicians in selecting an optimal 3D face acquisition system. While some of these systems have already been implemented in clinical settings, others hold promise. Furthermore, driven by technological advances, novel devices will become cost-effective and portable, and will also enable accurate quantitative assessments, rapid treatment simulations, and improved outcomes.

Scanning probe microscopy such as atomic force microscopy has become increasingly integrated and relevant in undergraduate laboratory investigations. As the "hands and eyes of the nanoworld", atomic force microscopes (AFMs) continue to be used to innovate the nanowriting process for data storage and in the exploration of novel materials suitable for ultrafast, nonvolatile, high density memory storage. Optical storage discs (OSDs) coevolved with AFM technology, are relatively inexpensive, and are easily available for purchase. They can, consequently, serve as a relevant phenomenon for undergraduate students to explore nanoscale material structure and macroscopic function through an AFM. The guided inquiry investigation presented here introduces students to the design and basic functions of an AFM through their identification of three unknown OSD samples (CD, DVD, or Blu-ray). The surface of each OSD is explored through students' collection and interpretation of topographic and force curve data using an AFM to identify differences in the structure of the grooves containing pits and lands, estimation of theoretical storage capacity, and finally distinguish OSD types by comparing their data and calculations to known structures and capacities.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is leading a paradigm shift in optical metrology, from physics‐ and knowledge‐based modeling to data‐driven learning. In particular, the integration of structured‐light techniques with deep learning has garnered widespread attention and achieved significant success due to its capability to enable single‐frame, high‐speed, and high‐accuracy 3D surface imaging. However, most algorithms based on deep neural networks (DNNs) face a critical challenge: they assume the training and test data are independent and identically distributed, leading to performance degradation when applied across different image domains, especially when test images are acquired from unseen systems and environments. A cross‐domain learning framework for adaptive structured‐light 3D imaging is proposed to address this challenge. This framework's adaptability is enhanced by a novel mixture‐of‐experts (MoE) architecture, capable of dynamically synthesizing a network by integrating contributions from multiple expert DNNs. Experimental results demonstrate the method exhibits superior generalization performance across diverse systems and environments over both “specialist” DNNs developed for fixed domains and “generalist” DNNs trained by brute‐force approaches. This work offers fresh insights into substantially enhancing the generalization of deep‐learning‐based structured‐light 3D imaging and advances the development of versatile, robust AI‐driven optical metrology techniques. Abstract The eye possesses a paravascular solute transport pathway that is driven by physiological pulsations, resembling the brain glymphatic pathway. We developed synchronous multimodal imaging tools aimed at measuring the driving pulsations of the human eye, using an eye-tracking functional eye camera (FEC) compatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for measuring eye surface pulsations. Special optics enabled integration of the FEC with MRI-compatible video ophthalmoscopy (MRcVO) for simultaneous retinal imaging along with functional eye MRI imaging (fMREye) of the BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) contrast. Upon optimizing the fMREye parameters, we measured the power of the physiological (vasomotor, respiratory, and cardiac) eye and brain pulsations by fast Fourier transform (FFT) power analysis. The human eye pulsated in all three physiological pulse bands, most prominently in the respiratory band. The FFT power means of physiological pulsation for two adjacent slices was significantly higher than in one-slice scans (RESP1 vs. RESP2; df = 5, p = 0.045). FEC and MRcVO confirmed the respiratory pulsations at the eye surface and retina. We conclude that in addition to the known cardiovascular pulsation, the human eye also has respiratory and vasomotor pulsation mechanisms, which are now amenable to study using non-invasive multimodal imaging of eye fluidics.

Background: Surface-guided imaging (SGI) is increasingly utilized to monitor patient motion during deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) in radiotherapy. Understanding the association between surface and internal motion is crucial for effective monitoring., Purpose: To investigate the relation between motion detected by SGI using surface-guided radiotherapy (SGRT) and internal motion measured through diaphragm tracking on kV projections acquired with DIBH for online CBCT., Methods: Both SGI and kV were simultaneously acquired for ten patients over a total of 200 breath holds (BH). Diaphragm tracking was performed using second-degree polynomial curve fitting on the derivative images for each kV projection and high-pass filtering at 1/30 Hz to remove rotational effects. The superior-inferior (SI) and anterior-posterior (AP) motions of SGI were then compared to kV tracking using various statistical measures., Results: The correlation (individuals' median: -0.07 to 0.73) was a suboptimal metric for the BH data. The median and 95th percentile absolute differences between SGI-SI and kV were 0.73 mm and 3.46 mm, respectively, during DIBH. For SGI-AP, the corresponding values were 0.55 mm and 2.80 mm. For inter-BH measurements, the contingency table based on a 3 mm threshold indicated surface/diaphragm motion agreement for SGI-SI/kV and SGI-AP/kV was 61 % and 56 %, respectively., Conclusion: Both intra- and inter-BH measurements indicated a limited association between surface and diaphragm motion, with certain constraints noted due to kV tracking and DIBH data.
