The objective of this study is to develop a remediation technology for composited heavy metal-contaminated soil. Biochars (BC300, BC400, and BC500) derived from corn were combined with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) to immobilize and remove heavy metal ions, including mercury (Hg2+), cadmium (Cd2+), and lead (Pb2+). The adsorption kinetics of metal ions in aqueous solutions with different concentrations was tested, and the fitting effects of the two models were compared. The findings demonstrate that the joint application of biochar and KH2PO4 could markedly enhance the immobilization efficacy of Pb2+, whereas the utilization of KH2PO4 on its own exhibited a more pronounced immobilization impact on Cd2+. Furthermore, the present study underscores the shortcomings of various remediation techniques that must be taken into account when addressing heavy metal-contaminated soils. It also emphasizes the value of comprehensive remediation techniques that integrate multiple remediation agents. This study offers a novel approach and methodology for addressing the intricate and evolving challenges posed by heavy metal contamination in soil. Its practical value and potential for application are significant.

It is well known that speciation transformations of As(III) vs. As(V) in acid mine drainage (AMD) are mainly driven by microbially mediated redox reactions of Fe and S. However, these processes are rarely investigated. In this study, columns containing mine water were inoculated with two typical acidophilic Fe/S-oxidizing/reducing bacteria [the chemoautotrophic Acidithiobacillus (At.) ferrooxidans and the heterotrophic Acidiphilium (Aph.) acidophilum], and three typical energy substrates (Fe2+, S0, and glucose) and two concentrations of As(III) (2.0 and 4.5 mM) were added. The correlation between Fe/S/As speciation transformation and bacterial depth distribution at three different depths, i.e., 15, 55, and 105 cm from the top of the columns, was comparatively investigated. The results show that the cell growth at the top and in the middle of the columns was much more significantly inhibited by the additions of As(III) than at the bottom, where the cell growth was promoted even on days 24–44. At. ferrooxidans dominated over Aph. acidophilum in most samples collected from the three depths, but the elevated proportions of Aph. acidophilum were observed in the top and bottom column samples when 4.5 mM As(III) was added. Fe2+ bio-oxidation and Fe3+ reduction coupled to As(III) oxidation occurred for all three column depths. At the column top surfaces, jarosites were formed, and the addition of As(III) could lead to the formation of the amorphous FeAsO4⋅2H2O. Furthermore, the higher As(III) concentration could inhibit Fe2+ bio-oxidation and the formation of FeAsO4⋅2H2O and jarosites. S oxidation coupled to Fe3+ reduction occurred at the bottom of the columns, with the formations of FeAsO4⋅2H2O precipitate and S intermediates. The formed FeAsO4⋅2H2O and jarosites at the top and bottom of the columns could adsorb to and coprecipitate with As(III) and As(V), resulting in the transfer of As from solution to solid phases, thus further affecting As speciation transformation. The distribution difference of Fe/S energy substrates could apparently affect Fe/S/As speciation transformation and bacterial depth distribution between the top and bottom of the water columns. These findings are valuable for elucidating As fate and toxicity mediated by microbially driven Fe/S redox in AMD environments.

In order to study the migration and transformation mechanism of Hg content and occurrence form in subsurface flow zone of gold mining area in Loess Plateau and its influence on water environment, the field in-situ infiltration test and laboratory test were carried out in three typical sections of river-side loess, alluvial and proluvial strata in Tongguan gold mining area of Shaanxi Province, and the following results were obtained: (1) The source of Hg in subsurface flow zone is mainly caused by mineral processing activities; (2) the subsurface flow zone in the study area is in alkaline environment, and the residual state, iron and manganese oxidation state, strong organic state and humic acid state of mercury in loess are equally divided in dry and oxidizing environment; mercury in river alluvial or diluvial strata is mainly concentrated in silt, tailings and clayey silt soil layer, and mercury has certain stability, and the form of mercury in loess is easier to transform than the other two media; (3) under the flooding condition, most of mercury is trapped in the silt layer in the undercurrent zone where the sand and silt layers alternate with each other and the river water and groundwater are disjointed, and the migration capacity of mercury is far less than that of loess layer and alluvial layer with close hydraulic connection; (4) infiltration at the flood level accelerates the migration of pollutants to the ground; (5) the soil in the undercurrent zone is overloaded and has seriously exceeded the standard. Although the groundwater monitoring results are safe this time, relevant enterprises or departments should continue to pay attention to improving the gold extraction process, especially vigorously rectify the small workshops for illegal gold extraction and the substandard discharge of the three wastes, and intensify efforts to solve the geological environmental problems of mines left over from history. At present, the occurrence form of mercury in the undercurrent zone is relatively stable, but the water and soil layers have been polluted. The risk of disjointed groundwater pollution can not be ignored while giving priority to the treatment of loess and river alluvial landform areas with close hydraulic links. The research results will provide a scientific basis for water conservancy departments to groundwater prevention and control in water-deficient areas of the Loess Plateau.

The Miyun Reservoir is the major source of surface drinking water in Beijing. However, the total nitrogen (TN) concentrations in the Miyun Reservoir and inflowing rivers have recently been increasing. In this study, the Mangniu River, a typical inflow river in the upper reaches of the Miyun Reservoir, was selected as the study area to investigate the spatial distribution and transformation of various nitrogen forms from the perspective of microbial community composition and predicting function, aimimg at providing a scientific reference for nitrogen pollution control of the Miyun Reservoir. The results indicated that except for TN, all the other physical and chemical water quality indicators in the upper reaches of the Miyun Reservoir met the Class II criteria of the environmental quality standards for surface water in China (GB 3838-2002). Additionally, NO 3 - -N was the primary constituent of TN, ranging from 77.7% to 92.9%. Banchengzi Reservoir has a certain self-purification ability because its high C/N ratio promotes denitrification. Significant differences in microbial community structure were observed between the water and sediments of Mangniu River along with spatial distribution. High NO 3 - -N concentration was the major environmental factor affecting the succession of microbial community structure. Many nitrification and denitrification microorganisms existed in Mengniu River, and the relative abundance of denitrification bacteria (DNB) was higher than that of nitrification bacteria, and that in the sediments was slightly higher than that in the water. Nitrosopumilus and Pseudomonas were the dominant nitrification and denitrification bacteria in Mengniuhe River, respectively. The results of phylogenetic investigation of communities by the reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt2) showed that NO 3 - -N reduction module was the major nitrogen metabolism module, which primarily occurred in water. The abundance of the functional genes for nitrification (i.e., narGH ) was the highest in water, and the major functional gene involved in NO 3 - -N reduction was nirBD of DNRA, which was primarily present in the sediments; however, the main functional gene involved in denitrification was nirK .

Abstract The species‐range size distribution is a product of speciation, transformation of range‐sizes, and extinction. Previous empirical studies showed that it has a left‐skewed lognormal‐like distribution. We developed a new mathematical framework to study species‐range‐size distributions, one in which allopatric speciation, transformation of range size, and the extinction process are explicitly integrated. The approach, which we call the gain‐loss‐allopatric speciation model, allows us to explore the effects of various speciation scenarios. Our model captures key dynamics thought to lead to known range‐size distributions. We also fitted the model to empirical range‐size distributions of birds, mammals, and beetles. Since geographic range dynamics are linked to speciation and extinction, our model provides predictions for the dynamics of species richness. When a species‐range‐size distribution initially evolves away from the range sizes at which the likelihood of speciation is low, it tends to cause diversification slowdown even in the absence of (bio)diversity dependence in speciation rate. Using the mathematical model developed here, we give a potential explanation for how observed range‐size distributions emerge from range‐size dynamics. Although the framework presented is minimalistic, it provides a starting point for examining hypotheses based on more complex mechanisms.

Mercury (Hg) is a potentially harmful trace element in the environment and one of the World Health Organization's foremost chemicals of concern. The threat posed by Hg contaminated soils to humans is pervasive, with an estimated 86 Gg of anthropogenic Hg pollution accumulated in surface soils worldwide. This review critically examines both recent advances and remaining knowledge gaps with respect to cycling of mercury in the soil environment, to aid the assessment and management of risks caused by Hg contamination. Included in this review are factors affecting Hg release from soil to the atmosphere, including how rainfall events drive gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) flux from soils of low Hg content, and how ambient conditions such as atmospheric O3 concentration play a significant role. Mercury contaminated soils constitute complex systems where many interdependent factors, including the amount and composition of soil organic matter and clays, oxidized minerals (e.g. Fe oxides), reduced elements (e.g. S2−), as well as soil pH and redox conditions affect Hg forms and transformation. Speciation influences the extent and rate of Hg subsurface transportation, which has often been assumed insignificant. Nano-sized Hg particles as well as soluble Hg complexes play important roles in soil Hg mobility, availability, and methylation. Finally, implications for human health and suggested research directions are put forward, where there is significant potential to improve remedial actions by accounting for Hg speciation and transportation factors. In soils, the speciation transformation of As were inherently related to the behaviors of iron (oxyhydr) oxides. It is poorly understood that the effects of the transformation of iron (oxyhydr) oxides coupled with As speciation transformation during dissimilatory Fe(III) reduction (DIR) involving with humic substances (HS) as electron donor or shuttle in soils with high arsenic geological background. In this study, the relationships between the transformation of iron (oxyhydr)oxides and As speciation transformation were investigated according to the response between continuously As speciation monitoring and iron (oxyhydr) oxides identification during DIR in the soils. The results showed that F4 (arsenic incorporated with amorphous iron (oxyhydr)oxides including ferrihydrite and schwertmannite) and F5 (arsenic incorporated with crystalline iron (oxyhydr)oxides including hematite and magnetite) were the main source and sink for As(III) Dissolved during DIR. During the incubation period, Fe(II) was the dominant driving force for the reduction of As(V) in the water-soil system. The XRD analysis indicated the changes of iron oxides such as ferrihydrite, schwertmannite, hematite and magnetite were closely related to the release and reduction of As, and those iron oxides could play governing roles for As speciation transformation during DIR in soils. Different from the known mechanism in low As concentrations, a limiting effect of As concentration on iron oxides transformation was found in our incubation experiments using soils with high As geological background (∼1000 mg/kg). This work provides new insights for Fe as governing role in As speciation transformation in soils with high arsenic geological background by firstly identifying the corresponding iron (oxyhydr)oxides in operationally defined arsenic speciation incorporated with iron oxides., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Landfill refuse is a mixture of inorganic minerals and organic matter that is capable of undergoing complexation and redox reactions due to its active functional groups. Organic matter often combines with minerals in landfill refuse and it remains unclear whether this combination involves electron transfer. Therefore, the effects of landfill refuse composition on reductive dechlorination and speciation transformation of heavy metals were investigated in this study. Results show that landfill refuse comprises protein- and humic-like substances, aliphatic structures, and a large number of hydroxyl, carboxyl, quinoid and other active functional group. The electron donating capacity (0.09-0.26 μmol/g(C)) of landfill refuse was found to be higher than its electron accepting capacity (0.03-0.23 μmol/g(C)), indicating that electron donating groups (hydroxyl) were the main redox-active moieties, facilitating the reductive dechlorination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by microorganism. Fe 2 O 3 , FeO and SiO 2 were the main inorganic minerals affecting PCP dechlorination. The speciation distribution of heavy metals in landfill refuse was determined by the BCR sequential extraction method. Results showed that Zn and Ni have high potential migration capacity, poor stability and the highest bioavailability, while Cr, Cu and Pb are relatively stable and have weak migration potential. The oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups, aliphatic structures and aromatic carbon in landfill refuse can promote the transformation of Ni and Cr from an unstable to stable state. Protein-like substances exhibit a strong Cu binding ability, allowing Cu to combine with organic matter more easily than other assessed heavy metals. Both Fe 2 O 3 and FeO affected the stability of Cu. FeO promoted the stabilization of Zn, whereas Fe 2 O 3 and SiO 2 promoted Cu instability.
