To date little research has examined the effects of the quality management on the narrative rationality and the argumentative rationality. The purpose of this study is to show that the collective quality management implementation contributes to the development of narration. Conversely, the implementation of the quality principles in accordance to the top-down management style generates a “resistance to change” phenomenon and argumentative rationality.

Summary : The on-line effects of narrative organization on the reading of story constituents (developmental study). Using a self-paced reading task an experiment is carried out with children of two different grades (7-8 and 10-11 year olds) and adults in order to find out whether narrative organization can facilitate the reading of narrative constituents as Haberland's experiments with adults suggest. Four stories were constructed using a story grammar model. Each sentence was a narrative constituent : Beginning-Event-Reaction-Attempt-Outcome-Ending. Subjects read these constituents either in Stories or in a List. The sentences were displayed on a computer screen one at a time. We compared reading times of constituents read in context or in lists. Results show that the acceleration of reading times in context appeared with children as well as adults. The stability of the facilitation effect through ail age levels suggests it was independent of reading ability. However the episode effect only appeared with the younger readers (7-8 year olds). For 10-11 year old children and adults the narrative effect merely produced a reading time acceleration from the second to the last sentences. The psychological validity of the cognitive schema is then discussed.

22. Lessons from Anti-Poverty Action in Ireland: Flexibility, Failure and the Pitfalls of a 'Fourth Branch' Model.

POVERTY ,ECONOMICS - Abstract
This article reviews the experience of Ireland's Combat Poverty Agency and asks what lessons it may have for fourth branch scholarship. The lesson of the Agency is, in part, one about the pitfalls for novel institutions operating within a traditional tripartite model of constitutional government. The article also suggests, however, that the Combat Poverty Agency's history may point to the positive potential for the design and operational strategies of non-traditional bodies charged with the promotion of specific social or economic goals. In so doing some reservations about both the specific implications and overall utility of framing these bodies in 'fourth branch' terms are also raised. These include concerns regarding the distinctiveness and (relatedly) authority of some conceptions of a 'fourth branch'. In particular, however, the article queries whether the elevation of independent agencies to 'branch' status is always beneficial; and whether, in fact, the location of anti-poverty agencies at a sub-constitutional level may, under certain conditions at least, offer advantages in terms of flexibility and practical problem-solving power. Story schema, narrative, picture ,Visual arts ,N1-9211 - Abstract
Abstract (E): We investigate whether people use a narrative/story schema to organize visual information in figurative isolated pictures representing a "pregnant moment", and, if so, how they do this. The participants in our study were asked to freely describe pictures that depict some event. Their descriptions were analyzed according to a system of categories developed especially for examining the use of an elaborated narrative organization. The findings support the hypothesis that observers use elaborated narrative organization that goes beyond mere temporal and causal organization (including, e.g., exposition, complication, resolution). Furthermore, the findings suggest that this elaborative narrative organization sometimes dominates the visual organization of the pictures.

- Abstract

- Abstract

Purpose - To explore identity dynamics in the lived experience of a strategic change over time. Design/methodology/approach - Qualitative data were collected through a longitudinal engagement with the focal organisation. Narrative analysis was used to trace the identity dynamics of senior figures in an organisation as it went through strategic change. This entailed a change of CEO and chairman, alterations to the composition of the board and the executive team and, in association with these changes in personnel, alterations to the strategy and direction of the company. Findings - The identity dynamics were at times comfortable and uncomfortable fits for the individuals involved, and over time expectations and realisations impacted on the processes of change in ways that were unexpected and unintentional for the actors. The outcome of the analysis shows the disruptive impact of identity dynamics on the practice of strategic change; Research limitations - The nature of the research undertaken does not seek to represent a holistic case study but, rather, is focused on a depth analysis of selected interactional data. Practical implications - A critique of traditional views of resistance to change is presented and an alternative approach to analysing reactions to change is proposed. Originality/value - The paper contributes a narrative approach to the discursive analysis of strategic change. It also elaborates the significance of "identity work" in such settings. This text is an attempt to answer the question of how to construct educational experiences in the professional biography of adults and their location within the practices of lifelong learning. To this end, the author presents the results of research on the ways in which public school teachers give meaning to their own professional experiences. Next she tries to show that the issues revealed as a result of the analysis are an important horizon for understanding and learning about their everyday life. As a result of the analysis of teachers' narratives, the author established three schemes for defining professional experiences, which in their essence reveal: lack of teachers' influence on the quality of education in general (a), perceiving the school as an effective organisation operating on the market (b), closing professional identity within its teaching method and its improvement. Referring to the concept of "biographicity" by Peter Alheit, the author shows that individual biography is a dynamic construct constantly reconstructed in a specific time, in socio-cultural and political conditions or in relation to other people - that is, practices that we identify as lifelong learning. In the case of the interviewed teachers, an element of these practices is the issue of shaping the culture of subordination and with it the politicisation and marketisation of education as well as the instrumental treatment of oneself and students. Objective. The primary aims of this study were to explore: (1) manifestations of socio-environmental models of allied health support provision in the disability sector; and (2) narrative experiences of individual allied health professionals in the disability sector. Methods. A narrative qualitative study using interviews from a purposive sample of two allied health professionals working in the disability sector explored manifestations of socio-environmental models of allied health support provision and their experiences from case examples. The key informants had more than 10 years of experience in the disability support services setting. Results. Seven key themes exploring manifestations of socio-environmental models of allied health professional practice in the disability sector emerged: (1) dignity of risk; (2) models of care; (3) considerations when working in the supported person's environment; (4) goal-oriented work; (5) informed choice and informed consent; (6) reactive and flexible plans; and (7) training and education role. Conclusions. Socio-environmental models of allied health support provision in the disability sector focus on empowering people with disability to achieve their goals. This may require displacement of cultural norms within the allied health professions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This thesis presents an instrumental case study of a National Health Service (NHS) mental healthcare trust in relation to race related equality policy in the delivery of secondary mental healthcare in England. The study takes a constructionist ontological position, and an interpretivist epistemology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the 20 participants working at three different levels of the organisation. These include strategic leaders: Chief Executive Officer, Operational Director, Director of Nursing Quality and Patient Experiences, Director of Learning and Development, Head of Human Resources, Equality and Diversity Lead; service level middle managers: General Manager, Modern Matron, Team leader, Manager of the Recovery College; and frontline practitioners: clinical directors, psychiatrist, occupational therapist, staff nurses, community psychiatrist nurse, Recovery College instructor, all working in an adult mental healthcare setting of the organisation. Narrative interviews were also conducted with eight members of the Pakistani community living in the local service area to gain their perspectives on mental illnesses and mental health services. The study was conducted because national race equality policy expects NHS mental healthcare organisations to change their culture and deliver equitable, culturally appropriate and satisfactory mental health services to all members of society, including those who identify themselves as ‘BME’ groups. However, there is evidence in the policy and research literature of inequalities in mental healthcare experienced by service users who identify themselves as being from ‘BME’ groups in England. This study, therefore, explores how a NHS mental healthcare Trust is trying to bring about cultural changes in order to meet the expectations of policy as well as meeting the needs of service users of ethnic background. For example, on the organisational side, the study explored vision and strategy as well as interventions for bringing about organisational change and the views of the participants on this change. The views from the members of the Pakistani ethnic group highlight how mental illnesses are perceived and responded to within this ethnic group. Data obtained from the staff group were analysed using a thematic framework approach. Resultant themes include: interpretation of racial equality policy in the organisation; organisational vision and strategy for change; and the challenges, barriers and facilitators to achieving the stated vision on racial equality in the service provision, especially for people of Pakistani ethnic group. The analysis benefited from the organisational development literature in analysing the data. Data obtained from the members of the Pakistani community were analysed using a thematic narrative approach. This data reflected ways in which mental health/illness is perceived and responded to within this group including: the social identity claims that people of Pakistani ethnicity make when perceiving and responding to mental illnesses; the extent to which they associate themselves with western and/or eastern models of mental illnesses; and their identification as an ethnic group with diverse and multiple social identities. Social identity literature is used to analyse and interpret this data. The relationship between the organisational data and the ethnic group data is discussed, and a way forward is suggested for bringing about the expected cultural change to the organisation in order to meet the mental health needs of ‘BME’ groups in England. The instrumental organisational case study, along with perspectives of the service users, have served to underline the challenges for the organisation on a day-to-day basis as they attempt to meet the expectations of policy, as well as the views and expectations of people of Pakistani ethnicity.

- Abstract
Narrative recording in case records and individual plans within social services represents the means by which stories can be constructed with and about the people with whom services work, influencing relationship building and outcomes. Identities and decision-making are forged in records, shaping people's lives. Yet, limited attention is paid to narrative recording in research and practice. Indeed, recording, which increasingly veers towards 'box-ticking', is viewed by practitioners as a bureaucratic burden, limiting time for the 'real job' of face-to-face work. Drawing on Ricoeur's narrative hermeneutics in exploring qualitative data from a carer support organisation, we identify the potential contribution of narrative recording. Carers often seek support when their sense of identity and quality of life is diminished by their unpaid caring role. We explore practitioners' views about the role of the narrative record in holding memories, feeding into recognition of capable agency, clarifying possibilities for action, restoration of identity and wellbeing. Applying a Ricoeurian lens demonstrates how attaining these benefits require recording practice which supports recognition through relational practice, in pursuit of better outcomes for carers. Carer benefits could be enhanced by carers holding a copy of and being able to reflect on and further contribute to their own plan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The figure in Greimassian semiotics, drawing on Hjelmlsev's polysemic elaboration, relates to both the plane of content and the plane of expression. On the former, it is realized at the discursive level, and refers to a theme that it concretizes. On the latter, the traces of information relayed to us by our five senses are also called figures. Generated by perception, these are figures of expression. It is through their mediation that the natural world plays a role in the birth of meaning. The unification of the two types of figure into a generic "figurativity," situated at the discursive level and subdivided into figurativity in the strict sense, or so-called surface-level figurativity, and figurativity in the broad sense, or deep-level figurativity (Landowski. 2017. Com Greimas : interações semióticas. São Paulo : Editora CPS e Estação das Letras e Cores) is discussed in the contributions of the authors of French semiotics and the quadratic structure of the sign, pertaining to Groupe µ (2015. Principia semiotica : aux sources du sens. Bruxelles : Les Impressions Nouvelles : 283–292). This discussion suggests to us a figurativity that is transversal to the generative path of meaning, contributing to the operation of conversion insofar as traces of the natural world resurface in the form of world figures on the discursive plane of content.
