Numerous taxonomic studies have focused on the dung beetle genus Helictopleurus d’Orbigny, 1915, endemic to Madagascar. However, this genus stilll needs a thorough revision. Semantic technologies, such as nanopublications, hold the potential to enhance taxonomy by transforming how data are published and analysed. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of nanopublications in establishing synonyms within the genus Helictopleurus.In this study, we identify four new synonyms within Helictopleurus: H. rudicollis (Fairmaire, 1898) = H. hypocrita Balthasar, 1941 syn. nov.; H. vadoni Lebis, 1960 = H. perpunctatus Balthasar, 1963 syn. nov.; H. halffteri Balthasar, 1964 = H. dorbignyi Montreuil, 2005 syn. nov.; H. clouei (Harold, 1869) = H. gibbicollis (Fairmaire, 1895) syn. nov. Helictopleurus may have a significantly larger number of synonyms than currently known, indicating potentially inaccurate estimates about its recent extinction.We also publish the newly-established synonyms as nanopublications, which are machine-readable data snippets accessible online. Additionally, we explore the utility of nanopublications in taxonomy and demonstrate their practical use with an example query for data extraction.

The stick-like mantis Angela miranda Saussure, 1871 (Mantodea, Angelidae) is newly recorded for the state of Chiapas in Mexico as well as for the department of Izabal in Guatemala, and the female is newly described. A re-examination of material from the Colección Nacional de Insectos (CNIN) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) labeled as Angela miranda and recorded from Tabasco, Mexico, was conducted, revealing that they were misidentified, belonging instead to the genus Phasmomantis Saussure, 1869 (Mantidae: Stagmomantinae). Finally, Angela perpulchra Westwood, 1889 and Angela championi Saussure & Zehntner, 1894 are hereby relegated as junior synonyms of Angela miranda.

Correct and timely identification of an invasive species during quarantine or at an early stage of invasion before establishment or spread is critical for preventing biological invasions. However, taxonomic confusion of potential invasive earthworm species caused by incorrect taxonomic treatment or reckless taxonomic work has made it difficult to properly recognize potential invasion threats. Through analyzing publicly available DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, we confirmed the validity of the specific status of Amynthas masatakae (Beddard, 1892), a peregrine earthworm species in East Asia with the potential to spread to other regions of the world, and designated two new synonyms of A. masatakae: Amynthas tralfamadore Blakemore, 2012 syn. nov. and Amynthas scaberulus Sun and Jiang, 2021 syn. nov. Additionally, the name A. triastriatus usualis Dong, Jiang, Yuan, Zhao and Qiu, 2020 is nomenclaturally unavailable since it was published in an electronic journal without ZooBank registration and an explicit statement establishing a new nominal taxon. Specimens described under this unavailable name actually belong to A. masatakae. Inadequate literature review and erroneous species identities associated with sequences in GenBank have caused even more problems in the already confusing earthworm taxonomy.

The Eastern common groundhopper, Tetrix japonica, is a pygmy grasshopper species widely distributed in the Eastern Palearctic region, and shows a high degree of phenotypic variation. The classification of Tetrix japonica is difficult and frequently involved errors. Among the many species of Tetrigidae that have been described in China within the last decades, many synonyms of Tetrix japonica were found. The type specimens of many species deposited in the Chinese museums have been re-examined and as a result, Tetrix japonica is systematically revised. Based on the results of this review, 23 new synonyms of Tetrix japonica are proposed: Coptotettix circinihumerus Zheng & Deng, 2004, syn. nov.; Coptotettix emeiensis Zheng, Lin & Zhang, 2012, syn. nov.; Euparatettix rongshuiensis Zheng, 2005, syn. nov.; Euparatettix zayuensis Zheng, Zeng & Ou, 2011, syn. nov.; Macromotettix nigritubercle Zheng & Jiang, 2006, syn. nov.; Macromotettix yaoshanensis Zheng & Jiang, 2000, syn. nov.; Tetrix albistriatus Yao & Zheng, 2006, syn. nov.; Tetrix albomaculatus Zheng & Jiang, 2006, syn. nov.; Tetrix albomarginis Zheng & Nie, 2005, syn. nov.; Tetrix cenwanglaoshana Zheng, Jiang & Liu, 2005, syn. nov.; Tetrix cliva Zheng & Deng, 2004, syn. nov.; Tetrix duolunensis Zheng, 1996, syn. nov.; Tetrix grossovalva Zheng, 1994, syn. nov.; Tetrix jiuwanshanensis Zheng, 2005, syn. nov.; Tetrix latipalpa Cao & Zheng, 2011, syn. nov.; Tetrix liuwanshanensis Deng, Zheng & Wei, 2007, syn. nov.; Tetrix qinlingensis Zheng, Huo & Zhang, 2000, syn. nov.; Tetrix rectimargina Zheng & Jiang, 2004, syn. nov.; Tetrix ruyuanensis Liang, 1998, syn. nov.; Tetrix xianensis Zheng, 1996, syn. nov.; Tetrix xinchengensis Deng, Zheng & Wei, 2007, syn. nov.; Tetrix yunlongensis Zheng & Mao, 2002, syn. nov.; Tetrix zhoushanensis Gao, Liu & Yin, 2022, syn. nov. It is expected that there will be the discoveries of more synonyms of this and other Tetriginae species from the Eastern Palearctic.

The soldier fly subfamily Beridinae in the family Stratiomyidae contains approximately 280 known species, these being distributed across nearly all biogeographical regions with the exception of the polar regions. On the Korean Peninsula, the species diversity of this subfamily has been poorly examined to date, as is reflected in the National species list of Korea by the National Institute of Biological Resources.In this paper, the soldier fly genus Beris Latreille is reported for the first time from Korea, based on observations of the following three species: B. fuscipes Meigen, 1820, B. hildebrandtae Pleske, 1930 and B. hirotui Ôuchi, 1943. Additionally, the authors propose two nomenclatural acts: 1) B. angustifacies Nagatomi and Tanaka, 1972 syn. nov. = B. hildebrandtae Pleske, 1930; 2) B. liaoningana Cui, Li and Yang, 2010 syn. nov. = B. hildebrandtae Pleske, 1930. The authors also provide an identification key, descriptions, photographs and distributional notes on these Korean species.

Wool carder bees of the genus Pseudoanthidium comprise approximately 60-65 species, which are found in the Palaearctic, Indo-Malayan and Afrotropical realms. Their taxonomic relationships are little understood. Herein, I revised West and Central Palaearctic members of the genus. Four species are described as new, namely P. farsiense sp. nov. from Iran, P. microrubrum sp. nov. from Morocco, P. syriacum sp. nov. from Syria, and P. tajikistanicum sp. nov. from Tajikistan. The largely overlooked species Anthidium fulviventre Friese, 1917, described from Russia, and Anthidium ivanovi Mavromoustakis, 1954, described from Tajikistan, are recognized as members of the Pseudoanthidium genus, as P. fulviventre (Friese, 1917) comb. nov. and P. ivanovi (Mavromoustakis, 1954) stat. resurrect. & comb. nov. Anthidium moricei Friese, 1911, from Jordan, and A. royoi Dusmet, 1915, from Morocco, are resurrected from synonymy with P. melanurum and suggested to be treated as P. moricei (Friese, 1911) stat. resurrect. and P. royoi (Dusmet, 1915) stat. resurrect. & comb. nov. The hitherto unknown males of P. moricei (Friese, 1911) and P. rubellulum Pasteels, 1969 are described based on material from Jordan and Israel, respectively. Royanthidium bicoloripenne Pasteels, 1981 (syn. nov.) from Morocco, is revealed to be a junior synonym of P. octodentatum (Pérez, 1895). Morphological traits, along with DNA sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene ("barcoding gene"), allowed clustering the species in five polytypic and five monotypic species groups. As key character traits of the type species of nominate Pseudoanthidium largely fit the subgeneric characters of the subgenus Royanthidium Pasteels, 1969, Royanthidium is regarded as a junior synonym (syn. nov.) of nominate Pseudoanthidium. The species of the subgenus Exanthidium Pasteels, 1969 form a uniform clade both in terms of morphology and DNA marker. An examination of the non-Palaearctic Pseudoanthidium species is suggested to determine whether Exanthidium deserves subgenus status.

A new species, Eumenes selisi Fateryga, sp. nov. is described from Uzbekistan. Three new synonymies are proposed: Masaris carli von Schulthess, 1922 = M. elegans Gusenleitner, 2002, syn. nov.; Parodontodynerus ephippium (Klug, 1817) = P. ephippium dalanicus Kurzenko, 1976, syn. nov.; Psiliglossa odyneroides (S.S. Saunders, 1850) = P. odyneroides kozhantshikovi Kostylev, 1940, syn. nov. Twenty-nine new country records are presented: two from Turkmenistan, four from Tajikistan, seven from Uzbekistan, seven from Kyrgyzstan, and nine from Kazakhstan. Masaris carli is excluded from the fauna of Iran and Psiliglossa odyneroides is excluded from the fauna of Russia. Observations on flower-visiting behavior of Chlorodynerus arenicola and Euodynerus setosus are reported.

Based on analysis of morphologically diagnostic characters, Camellia langbianensis, a yellow camellia native to southern Vietnam, is taxonomically revised to include four new heterotypic synonyms: C. decora, C. dongnaiensis, C. oconoriana and C. tadungensis. Camellia vidalii is retained in the synonymy of C. langbianensis. Updated description and distribution map for C. langbianensis are provided.

We provide external morphological observations of the American genus Pseudophilothrips, which includes two major thrip pests of avocados in Mexico and Central America. The evaluation was based on two taxonomic definitions of the genus that are typically used to identify the thrips specimens using light microscopy. A new definition of the genus Pseudophilothrips is presented with a key to the species. We propose synonyms for two species of Pseudophilothrips that were formerly in the genus Liothrips, with new observations of the arrangements of setae on the head and thorax using scanning electron microscopy. In the revision on the genus Impatiens L. in China, we found that there were synonyms amongst some species. Impatiens procumbens Franch. morphologically resembled I. reptans Hook.f., I. crassiloba Hook.f., I. ganpiuana Hook.f., I. atherosepala Hook.f. and I. rhombifolia Y.Q.Lu & Y.L.Chen. After a thorough morphological study, based on original literature, type specimens and field surveys, it was found that the above six species of Impatiens had no substantial differences in morphological characters and there was continuity in geographical distribution. Therefore, we determined that I. reptans, I. crassiloba, I. ganpiuana, I. atherosepala and I. rhombifolia are the synonyms of I. procumbens. At the same time, we present the color photographs, supplementary descriptions of morphology, and geographical distribution. The lectotype of I. procumbens and I. reptans are also designated here.

Cynanchum thesioides, a species widely distributed in north-eastern Asia, is revised to include two new synonyms: Vincetoxicum sibiricum f. linearifolium, described from Shandong, China in 1877, but long neglected and Cynanchum gobicum, previously believed to be endemic to Mongolia. Typification for C. thesioides and all its synonyms is given, including lectotypification of V. sibiricum var. australe and V. sibiricum f. linearifolium. An updated description, three figures showing the diverse habitats, habits and variation in morphological characters, and a general distribution map are also provided.

The genus Matsumuraja Schumacher, 1921 is an eastern Asiatic genus and was reviewed in China. After this research, M. polydactylota Qiao & Zhang syn. nov. was regarded as the synonym of M. rubicola Takahashi; and Chaetosiphon anguifragum Zhang & Qiao syn. nov. was regarded as the synonym of M. rubifoliae Takahashi. Furthermore, M. rubi (Matsumura), M. rubiphila Takahashi, M. taisetsusana Miyazaki, M. urticae Ghosh, Ghosh & Raychaudhuri were first recorded in China. Seven species of the genus are now recognized in China. A key to species of Matsumuraja in China is presented.

Two new synonyms in the subfamily Theridiinae Sundevall, 1833 (Araneae, Theridiidae) are reported. Theridion hui Zhu, 1998 is proposed as a junior synonym of Theridion innocuum Thorell, 1875, and Theridion qingzangense Hu, 2001 is proposed as a junior synonym of Phylloneta impressa (L. Koch, 1881). Photos of habitus and copulatory organs are provided for both species.

Macromitrium japonicum Dozy & Molk. is an epiphytic moss mainly recorded from East Asia. To clarify its morphological variations and their potential genetic basis, we morphologically compared fourteen samples assigned to M. japonicum, and constructed a phylogenetic tree including these samples based on trnL-F, trnG and ITS2. On the phylogenetic tree, these fourteen samples formed a single clade, being characterized by the typical features of M. japonicum. Comparing the types of M. japonicum var. makinoi (Broth.) Nog., M. dickasonii Bartr. and M. polygonostomum Dixon & P. de la Varde with these samples, and the types of M. japonicum and its former synonyms including Dasymitrium incurvum Lind. and M. bathyodontum Cardot, we found that the variations of the former three species fall within the morphological variation range of the above fourteen samples and the types of M. japonicum, D. incurvum and M. bathyodontum. Therefore, we treated M. japonicum var. makinoi, M. dickasonii and M. polygonostomum as three new synonyms of M. japonicum. Macromitrium giraldii Müll.Hal. is excluded from the synonyms of M. japoncium and likely an acceptable species name. Additionally, M. japonicum is newly recorded for Myanmar. Macromitrium japonicum Dozy & Molk. est une mousse épiphyte principalement observée en Asie de l'Est. Afin de clarifier ses variations morphologiques et leur base génétique potentielle, nous avons comparé morphologiquement quatorze échantillons attribués à M. japonicum, et construit un arbre phylogénétique incluant ces échantillons sur la base trnL-F, trnG et ITS2. Sur l'arbre phylogénétique, ces quatorze échantillons formaient un seul clade, caractérisé par les particularités typiques de M. japonicum. En comparant les types de M. japonicum var. makinoi (Broth.) Nog., M. dickasonii Bartr. et M. polygonostomum Dixon & P. de la Varde avec ces échantillons, et les types de M. japonicum et ses anciens synonymes dont Dasymitrium incurvum Lind. et M. bathyodontum Cardot, nous avons trouvé que les variations des trois premières espèces se situent dans la gamme de variation morphologique des quatorze échantillons ci-dessus et des types de M. japonicum, D. incurvum et M. bathyodontum. Two species, Tillicera fortis sp. nov. and Tillicera spinosa sp. nov., are newly described. New distributional records are presented for Tillicera callosa Gerstmeier & Bernhard, 2010, Tillicera javana Spinola, 1844, Tillicera pseudocleroides Gerstmeier & Bernhard, 2010, Tillicera soror Schenkling, 1902, and Tillicera tonkinensis Gerstmeier & Bernhard, 2010. Clerus postmaculatus Nakane, 1963 syn. nov. is synonymized with Tillicera ihlei Corporaal, 1949. The presence of sensory organs (sensilla) on the ventral surface of the antennae is discovered in Tillicera and Hemitrachys for the first time. A key to the valid species of Tillicera is provided.

The genera Pseudotraulia Laosinchai & Jago, 1980 and Bannacris Zheng, 1980 are revised based on the examination of types and additional materials. Bannacris punctonotus Zheng, 1980 is synonymized with Pseudotraulia cornuata Laosinchai & Jago, 1980 and Bannacris Zheng, 1980 with Pseudotraulia Laosinchai & Jago, 1980. The tribal placement of Pseudotraulia is discussed and the genus Pseudotraulia is transferred here from the tribe Mesambriini of the subfamily Catantopinae Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 to the subfamily Coptacrinae Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 which is not divided into tribes and consists of 22 genera distributed in the Afrotropical and Oriental regions.

The traditional statistical approach in synonyms extraction is time-consuming. It is necessary to develop a new method to improve the efficiency and accuracy. This research presents a new method in synonyms extraction called Noun Based Distinctive Verbs (NBDV) that replaces the traditional tf-idf weighting scheme with a new weighting scheme called the Orbit Weighing Scheme (OWS). The OWS links the nouns to their semantic space by examining the singular verbs in each context. The new method was compared with important models in the field such as the Skip-Gram, the Continuous Bag of Words, and the GloVe model. The NBDV model was manipulated over the Arabic and English languages and the results showed 47% Recall and 51% Precision in the dictionary-based evaluation and 57.5% Precision in the human experts’ evaluation. Comparing with the synonyms extraction based on tf.idf, the NBDV obtained 11% higher recall and 10% higher precision. Regarding the efficiency, we found that on average, the synonyms extraction of a single noun requires the process of 186 verbs and in 63% of the runs; the number of singular verbs was less than 200. It is concluded that the developed method is efficient and processes the single run in linear time.
