A new class of Multi-Rotor Aerial Vehicles (MRAVs), known as omnidirectional MRAVs (o-MRAVs), has attracted significant interest in the robotics community. These MRAVs have the unique capability of independently controlling their 3D position and 3D orientation. In the context of aerial communication networks, this translates into the ability to control the position and orientation of the antenna mounted on the MRAV without any additional devices tasked for antenna orientation. This additional Degrees of Freedom (DoF) adds a new dimension to aerial communication systems, creating various research opportunities in communications-aware trajectory planning and positioning. This paper presents this new class of MRAVs and discusses use cases in areas such as physical layer security and optical communications. Furthermore, the benefits of these MRAVs are illustrated with realistic simulation scenarios. This paper presents an approach that employs log-linearization in Lie group theory and the Newton-Euler equations to derive exact linear error dynamics for a multi-rotor model, and applies this model with a novel log-linear dynamic inversion controller to simplify the nonlinear distortion and enhance the robustness of the log-linearized system. In addition, we utilize Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) to bound the tracking error for the log-linearization in the presence of bounded disturbance input and use the exponential map to compute the invariant set of the nonlinear system in the Lie group. This study presents a machine learning-aided approach to accurately estimate the region of attraction (ROA) of a multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) controlled using a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller. Conventional ROA estimation approaches rely on a nominal dynamic model for ROA calculation, leading to inaccurate estimation due to unknown dynamics and disturbances associated with the physical system. To address this issue, our study utilizes a neural network to predict these unknown disturbances of a planar quadrotor. The nominal model integrated with the learned disturbances is then employed to calculate the ROA of the planer quadrotor using a graphical technique. The estimated ROA is then compared with the ROA calculated using Lyapunov analysis and the graphical approach without incorporating the learned disturbances. The results illustrated that the proposed method provides a more accurate estimation of the ROA, while the conventional Lyapunov-based estimation tends to be more conservative.

Recent research in communications-aware robotics has been propelled by advancements in 5G and emerging 6G technologies. This field now includes the integration of Multi-Rotor Aerial Vehicles (MRAVs) into cellular networks, with a specific focus on under-actuated MRAVs. These vehicles face challenges in independently controlling position and orientation due to their limited control inputs, which adversely affects communication metrics such as Signal-to-Noise Ratio. In response, a newer class of omnidirectional MRAVs has been developed, which can control both position and orientation simultaneously by tilting their propellers. However, exploiting this capability fully requires sophisticated motion planning techniques. This paper presents a novel application of omnidirectional MRAVs designed to enhance communication security and thwart eavesdropping. It proposes a strategy where one MRAV functions as an aerial Base Station, while another acts as a friendly jammer to secure communications. Time-optimal control of a multi-rotor remains an open problem due to the under-actuation and nonlinearity of its dynamics, which make it difficult to solve this problem directly. In this paper, the time-optimal control problem of the multi-rotor is studied. Firstly, a thrust limit optimal decomposition method is proposed, which can reasonably decompose the limited thrust into three directions according to the current state and the target state. As a result, the thrust limit constraint is decomposed as a linear constraint. With the linear constraint and decoupled dynamics, a time-optimal guidance trajectory can be obtained. Then, a cost function is defined based on the time-optimal guidance trajectory, which has a quadratic form and can be used to evaluate the time-optimal performance of the system outputs. Finally, based on the cost function, the time-optimal control problem is reformulated as an MPC (Model Predictive Control) problem. Multi-rotor aerial autonomous vehicles (MAVs) primarily rely on vision for navigation purposes. However, visual localization and odometry techniques suffer from poor performance in low or direct sunlight, a limited field of view, and vulnerability to occlusions. Acoustic sensing can serve as a complementary or even alternative modality for vision in many situations, and it also has the added benefits of lower system cost and energy footprint, which is especially important for micro aircraft. This paper proposes actively controlling and shaping the aircraft propulsion noise generated by the rotors to benefit localization tasks, rather than considering it a harmful nuisance. We present a neural network architecture for selfnoise-based localization in a known environment. We show that training it simultaneously with learning time-varying rotor phase modulation achieves accurate and robust localization. The proposed methods are evaluated using a computationally affordable simulation of MAV rotor noise in 2D acoustic environments that is fitted to real recordings of rotor pressure fields.

The integration of Multi-Rotor Aerial Vehicles (MRAVs) into 5G and 6G networks enhances coverage, connectivity, and congestion management. This fosters communication-aware robotics, exploring the interplay between robotics and communications, but also makes the MRAVs susceptible to malicious attacks, such as jamming. One traditional approach to counter these attacks is the use of beamforming on the MRAVs to apply physical layer security techniques. In this paper, we explore pose optimization as an alternative approach to countering jamming attacks on MRAVs. This technique is intended for omnidirectional MRAVs, which are drones capable of independently controlling both their position and orientation, as opposed to the more common underactuated MRAVs whose orientation cannot be controlled independently of their position. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become pivotal in domains spanning military, agriculture, surveillance, and logistics, revolutionizing data collection and environmental interaction. With the advancement in drone technology, there is a compelling need to develop a holistic methodology for designing UAVs. This research focuses on establishing a procedure encompassing conceptual design, use of composite materials, weight optimization, stability analysis, avionics integration, advanced manufacturing, and incorporation of autonomous payload delivery through object detection models tailored to satisfy specific applications while maintaining cost efficiency. The study conducts a comparative assessment of potential composite materials and various quadcopter frame configurations. The novel features include a payload-dropping mechanism, a unibody arm fixture, and the utilization of carbon-fibre-balsa composites. A quadcopter is designed and analyzed using the proposed methodology, followed by its fabrication using additive manufacturing and vacuum bagging techniques. A computer vision-based deep learning model enables precise delivery of payloads by autonomously detecting targets.

Research on Multi-rotor Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) has experienced remarkable advancements over the past two decades, propelling the field forward at an accelerated pace. Through the implementation of motion control and the integration of specialized mechanisms, researchers have unlocked the potential of MAVs to perform a wide range of tasks in diverse scenarios. Notably, the literature has highlighted the distinctive attributes of MAVs that endow them with a competitive edge in physical interaction when compared to other robotic systems. In this survey, we present a categorization of the various types of physical interactions in which MAVs are involved, supported by comprehensive case studies. We examine the approaches employed by researchers to address different challenges using MAVs and their applications, including the development of different types of controllers to handle uncertainties inherent in these interactions. By conducting a thorough analysis of the strengths and limitations associated with different methodologies, as well as engaging in discussions about potential enhancements, this survey aims to illuminate the path for future research focusing on MAVs with high actuation capabilities.

This paper presents a trajectory-tracking controller for multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in scenarios where only the desired position and heading are known without the higher-order derivatives. The proposed solution modifies the state-of-the-art geometric controller, effectively addressing challenges related to the non-existence of the desired attitude and ensuring positive total thrust input for all time. We tackle the additional challenge of the non-availability of the higher derivatives of the trajectory by introducing novel nonlinear filter structures. We formalize theoretically the effect of these filter structures on the system error dynamics. Subsequently, through a rigorous theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that the proposed controller leads to uniformly ultimately bounded system error dynamics.

This paper introduces for the first time the design, modelling, and control of a novel morphing multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that we call the OmniMorph. The morphing ability allows the selection of the configuration that optimizes energy consumption while ensuring the needed maneuverability for the required task. The most energy-efficient uni-directional thrust (UDT) configuration can be used, e.g., during standard point-to-point displacements. Fully-actuated (FA) and omnidirectional (OD) configurations can be instead used for full pose tracking, such as, e.g., constant attitude horizontal motions and full rotations on the spot, and for full wrench 6D interaction control and 6D disturbance rejection. Morphing is obtained using a single servomotor, allowing possible minimization of weight, costs, and maintenance complexity. The actuation properties are studied, and an optimal controller that compromises between performance and control effort is proposed and validated in realistic simulations. Multi-rotor UAVs suffer from a restricted range and flight duration due to limited battery capacity. Autonomous landing on a 2D moving platform offers the possibility to replenish batteries and offload data, thus increasing the utility of the vehicle. Classical approaches rely on accurate, complex and difficult-to-derive models of the vehicle and the environment. Reinforcement learning (RL) provides an attractive alternative due to its ability to learn a suitable control policy exclusively from data during a training procedure. However, current methods require several hours to train, have limited success rates and depend on hyperparameters that need to be tuned by trial-and-error. We address all these issues in this work. First, we decompose the landing procedure into a sequence of simpler, but similar learning tasks. This is enabled by applying two instances of the same RL based controller trained for 1D motion for controlling the multi-rotor's movement in both the longitudinal and the lateral directions. Second, we introduce a powerful state space discretization technique that is based on i) kinematic modeling of the moving platform to derive information about the state space topology and ii) structuring the training as a sequential curriculum using transfer learning. Third, we leverage the kinematics model of the moving platform to also derive interpretable hyperparameters for the training process that ensure sufficient maneuverability of the multi-rotor vehicle. The training is performed using the tabular RL method Double Q-Learning. Through extensive simulations we show that the presented method significantly increases the rate of successful landings, while requiring less training time compared to other deep RL approaches. Multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) need to tilt in order to move; this modifies the UAV's antenna orientation. We consider the scenario where a multi-rotor UAV serves as a communication relay between a Base Station (BS) and another UAV. We propose a framework to generate feasible trajectories for the multi-rotor UAV relay while considering its motion dynamics and the motion-induced changes of the antenna orientation. The UAV relay's trajectory is optimized to maximize the end-to-end number of bits transmitted. A perception-aware Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) strategy aimed at performing vision-based target tracking and collision avoidance with a multi-rotor aerial vehicle is presented in this paper. The proposed control strategy considers both realistic actuation limits at the torque level and visual perception constraints to enforce the visibility coverage of a target while complying with the mission objectives. Furthermore, the approach allows to safely navigate in a workspace area populated by dynamic obstacles with a ballistic motion. The formulation is meant to be generic and set upon a large class of multi-rotor vehicles that covers both coplanar designs like quadrotors as well as fully-actuated platforms with tilted propellers. This paper presents a technique to cope with the gap between high-level planning, e.g., reference trajectory tracking, and low-level controlling using a learning-based method in the plan-based control paradigm. The technique improves the smoothness of maneuvering through cluttered environments, especially targeting low-speed velocity profiles. In such a profile, external aerodynamic effects that are applied on the quadrotor can be neglected. Hence, we used a simplified motion model to represent the motion of the quadrotor when formulating the Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC)-based local planner. However, the simplified motion model causes residual dynamics between the high-level planner and the low-level controller. The Sparse Gaussian Process Regression-based technique is proposed to reduce these residual dynamics. The proposed technique is compared with Data-Driven MPC. The comparison results yield that an augmented residual dynamics model-based planner helps to reduce the nominal model error by a factor of 2 on average. Further, we compared the proposed complete framework with four other approaches. The proposed approach outperformed the others in terms of tracking the reference trajectory without colliding with obstacles with less flight time without losing computational efficiency.

A model-based feasible control strategy for multi-rotor systems is presented, pursuing two control objectives simultaneously: Mechanical loads on the main tower are to be mitigated, and an externally determined power change is to be followed to obtain fast power reference response in power systems. For this purpose, a scalable control strategy consisting of two levels is proposed: The first level consists of the decentralized control of each rotor unit. By using an LPV formalism, it is shown how the nonlinearities of the controlled system are considered in the design using a decentralized wind speed observer of each rotor to improve the overall closed-loop performance. To mitigate the lateral loads on the multi-rotor main tower caused by asymmetric rotor thrust forces, a higher-level controller is introduced. This paper applies the UAV to the inspection of water diversion pipelines in hydropower stations. The diversion pipeline is an enclosed space, so the airflow disturbance caused by the rotation of the UAV blades and the strong air convection from the chimney effect have a great impact on the flight control of the UAV. Although the traditional linear control PID flight control algorithm has been widely used and can meet the requirements of general flight tasks, it cannot guarantee the stability of the system over a wide range. The inspection of a diversion line in an enclosed space requires high system stability and robustness of the UAV controller. In this paper, a hybrid stabilised adaptive backstepping control method is proposed. Firstly, a multi-rotor UAV model is analysed and transformed into a strict feedback form with external disturbances; then adaptive techniques are used to estimate the airflow disturbances caused by the blades, and the attitude and position tracking controllers are designed by combining backstepping control and PID control respectively; finally, the asymptotic stability of the system is ensured by constructing a Lyapunov function.
