Abstract In recent decades, mangrove wetlands globally have suffered from human activities and climate change, leading to issues like area reduction, degraded ecological functions and declining biodiversity. Restoration efforts, primarily through mangrove afforestation (i.e. mangrove plantation in mudflats), have been widespread, yet they often overlook the significance of unvegetated mudflats. In addition, under the condition that the total area of suitable mudflats is limited, the problem of what is the threshold of mangrove forests and unvegetated mudflats to better protect mangrove biodiversity has not been solved. Therefore, this study conducted a field survey of molluscs in mangrove wetlands in Hainan Island in China and explored the relative importance of mangroves and unvegetated mudflats through taxonomic alpha diversity and functional diversity. The results showed that (1) mollusc abundance of unvegetated mudflats was notably higher than this of mangrove forests, and the species richness, functional richness and functional vulnerability were significantly lower than those of mangrove forests; (2) the abundance and functional vulnerability of molluscs were mainly affected by sediment properties (pH, interstitial water salinity, median diameter, total nitrogen, C/N ratio), while the species richness and functional richness of molluscs were primarily influenced by vegetation structure (plant density); and (3) retaining at least 20% of the unvegetated mudflat area could well protect the biodiversity of mangrove wetlands. To our knowledge, our study is the first to propose the proportion of mangrove forests and unvegetated mudflats on the basis of benthic biodiversity, providing theoretical support and decision‐making reference for mangrove protection and restoration.

Mollusc and crustacean consumption in the first 1000 d may improve maternal and child health by providing essential nutrients. However, in some contexts, molluscs and crustaceans have been associated with allergies and environmental contamination, potentially leading to adverse health and development outcomes. It is unclear whether the health benefits of consuming molluscs and crustaceans, collectively classified as shellfish in nutrition, are outweighed by the potential risks to pregnant women and children. We conducted a scoping review (PROSPERO: CRD42022320454) in PubMed, Scopus and EBSCO Global Health of articles published between January 2000 and March 2022 that assessed shellfish consumption during pregnancy, lactation or childhood (0-2 years) in relation to maternal health, child health or child development. A total of forty-six articles were included in this review. Overall, shellfish consumption was associated with higher biomarkers of environmental contaminants, with mercury being the most studied and having the strongest evidence base. The limited research on nutritional biomarker status shows an association between shellfish consumption and iodine status. Preterm birth was not associated with shellfish consumption, but newborn anthropometry showed mixed results, with several studies reporting lower birth weight with higher shellfish consumption. The few studies that examined child development and maternal health outcomes reported no significant associations. This review revealed trade-off health risks and benefits with inclusion of molluscs and crustaceans in the dietary patterns of mothers and young children. More research is needed to understand how these aquatic animal-source foods may be safely consumed and leveraged for improving human nutrition.

The enormous diversity of molluscs has provided humans with food, colours, medicines and shells, among other resources. Molluscs have long been utilized in traditional medicine in several countries and they are a valuable source of medical supplies for many diverse communities worldwide. The purpose of this study was to identify and assess Cipangopaludina lecythis bioactive compounds in order to determine the nature of the primary ingredient that gives its medicinal properties. C. lecythis flesh and shell extracts using polar and lipophilic solvents were analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This study provides the first chemical assessment of flesh and shell-opercula of C. lecythis. Chemical analysis of flesh and shell-opercula of C. lecythis clearly showed the presence of major compounds such as chitin, allantoin, linoleic acid, dihydrotachysterol, cyclotrisiloxane hexamethyl and 6-gingerol besides other minor compounds with bioactive properties of medicinal significance. Overall, this research provides good evidence that C. lecythis produce secondary metabolites with a variety of intriguing pharmacological characteristics. They have also long been a part of traditional medicine in many human cultural groups. Its usage by traditional practitioners to treat a range of human diseases is justified by the presence of numerous medicinally significant bioactive chemicals. However, more research on the bioactive compounds found in snails is necessary to standardize the extraction techniques for their detection, quantification and formulations, to validate their in vivo efficacy, and confirm their safety.

The research was carried out in calcareous fen habitats which share coverage with Natura 2000 sites designated under the EU Habitats and the Birds Directive. A total of 27 taxa of molluscs were recorded: 23 gastropod and 4 bivalve species. Anisus vorticulus, one of the species of Community interest whose conservation requires designation of special conservation areas within the Habitats Directive Natura 2000, was subrecedent and accedent in mollusc communities. Calcareous fen habitats offer the aquatic organisms harsh environmental conditions including a relatively high temperature of the water up to 33.29 °C (undrained fens), oxygen deficits in the water, high pH of up to 11.08 (fen pools) and conductivity above 3000 μS cm−1 (fen ditches). Therefore molluscs have to face extreme environmental conditions. Temperature of the water, pH, dissolved oxygen and conductivity were the parameters most associated with the distribution of mollusc species in the calcareous fen habitats. The abundance of submerged and floating macrophytes, the degree of habitat persistence and the fish predation pressure on molluscs also exerted a significant effect on their distribution. The calcareous fen habitats that are listed in Annex I of the European Union Habitats Directive create a unique valuable ecosystem that contributes to the natural diversity of aquatic organisms.

Abstract Crab species are increasingly important socioeconomic resources that are threatened by human exploitation, climate change, and invasive species, such as European green crabs (Carcinus maenas). However, the continued health of their populations is often uncertain given the limited long‐term population data, necessitating alternate approaches to ensure their continued viability. Furthermore, C. maenas are one of the most highly invasive and destructive marine species globally, posing a threat to local ecosystems and species, including socioeconomically important crabs and their mollusc prey. Improved understanding of C. maenas invasions and their impacts on local crab and mollusc resources is therefore vitally important. Here, we present a new method for identifying species‐level presence and relative abundances of important crab species, including invasive C. maenas, from the scars they leave on their prey. We conducted controlled manipulative feeding experiments in which individuals of Dungeness crabs (Metacarcinus magister), red rock crabs (Cancer productus), and C. maenas, were allowed to attack snails (Tegula funebralis) and produce sublethal shell damage. Abstract The Pleurotomarioidea, commonly referred to as slit shells, constitute one of the most ancient and enduring lineages within the phylum Mollusca, with its fossil record tracing back to the Upper Cambrian epoch. Its rareness and evolutionary antiquity surpass even that of the nautilus. In this study, we conducted the first transcriptome sequencing and analyses of Entemnotrochus rumphii (Schepman, 1879), a representative species of Pleurotomarioidea. Full-length transcriptome sequencing of E. rumphii was performed using the PacBio Sequel II platform with SMRT technology. A total of 64.38 gigabytes of data and 964,550 polymerase reads were generated, resulting in 28,068,998 subreads after data filtering. After de-duplication, correction, and clustering, we identified 19,273 genes. Additionally, next-generation sequencing was performed on 11 tissues of E. rumphii. This investigation provides a detailed portrayal and analytical scrutiny of its transcriptomic landscape.

The bivalve mollusc Arctica islandica can live for hundreds of years, and its shell has provided a valuable resource for sclerochronological studies and geochemical analyses for understanding palaeoenvironmental change. Shell specimens recovered from the seabed need to be dated in order to aid sample selection, but existing methods using radiocarbon dating or cross-dating are both costly and time-consuming. We have investigated amino acid geochronology (AAG) as a potential alternative means of providing a less costly and more efficient range-finding method. In order to do this, we have investigated the complex microstructure of the shells, as this may influence the application of AAG. Each of the three microstructural layers of A. islandica have been isolated and their protein degradation examined (amino acid concentration, composition, racemization, and peptide bond hydrolysis). The intra-crystalline protein fraction was successfully extracted following oxidation treatment for 48 h, and high-temperature experiments at 140 °C established coherent breakdown patterns in all three layers, but the inner portion of the outer shell layer (iOSL) was the most appropriate component due to practicalities. Sampling of the iOSL layer in Holocene shells from early and late ontogeny (over 100–400 years) showed that the resolution of AAG is too low in A. islandica for within-shell age resolution. However, analysis of 52 subfossil samples confirmed that this approach could be used to establish a relative geochronology for this biomineral throughout the whole of the Quaternary. In the late Holocene the temporal resolution is ∼1500–2000 years. Relative dating of 160 dredged shells of unknown age was narrowed down using AAG as a range finder, showing that a collection of shells from Iceland and the North Sea covered the middle Holocene, late Holocene, later and post-medieval (1171–1713 CE), and modern day. This study confirms the value of A. islandica as a reliable material for range finding and for dating Quaternary deposits.

Analysis of the results shows that mollusc of the species Gibbulinopsis signata (Mousson, 1873) from the northwestern region of Uzbekistan exhibits significant variability in conchological characteristics, including variability in shell size, shape, and colour, as well as variations in aperture shape and fittings. Among these characteristics, shell height is found to be the most variable and is recognised as an ecological and biological indicator of mollusc’s adaptability to habitat conditions. The results of molecular analysis, using the sequences of the gene 18S of ribosomal DNA showed that all three populations belonged to the same species.

Currently, scientific studies have are focusing on environmentally friendly solutions, such as the effective use of waste in new green polymeric materials according to circular economy. Waste valorization is the main driving force for upcoming academic research. In this study, the impact of mussel particle size on reinforced biopoly(terphtalate ethylene) (bPET) is investigated. The waste filler was modified using NaOH. The filler content was 10 wt% and the same for all samples. The strength properties of the materials were determined in static tensile, bending and impact tests. The wetting angle was also analyzed for the obtained biocomposites. A low-cycle dynamic test was carried out to determine changes in dissipation energy and to observe the development of relaxation processes. This present study proves that preparation of new biocomposites based on waste mussels is an effective option in waste management.

Antidepressant drugs (ADDs) are one of the most extensively used pharmaceuticals globally. They act at particularly low therapeutic concentrations to modulate monoamine neurotransmission, which is one of the most evolutionary conserved pathways in both humans and animal species including invertebrates. As ADDs are widely detected in the aquatic environment at low concentrations (ng/L to low µg/L), their potential to exert drug-target mediated effects in aquatic species has raised serious concerns. Amitriptyline (AMI) is the most widely used tricyclic ADD, while monoamines, the target of ADDs, are major bioregulators of multiple key physiological processes including feeding, reproduction and behaviour in molluscs. However, the effects of AMI on feeding, reproduction and mating behaviour are unknown in molluscs despite their ecological importance, diversity and reported sensitivity to ADDs. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of AMI (0, 10, 100, 500 and 1000 ng/L) on feeding, reproduction and key locomotor behaviours, including mating, in the freshwater gastropod, Biomphalaria glabrata over a period of 28 days. To further provide insight into the sensitivity of molluscs to ADDs, AMI concentrations (exposure water and hemolymph) were determined using a novel extraction method. The Fish Plasma Model (FPM), a critical tool for prioritization assessment of pharmaceuticals with potential to cause drug target-mediated effects in fish, was then evaluated for its applicability to molluscs for the first time. Disruption of food intake (1000 ng/L) and reproductive output (500 and 1000 ng/L) were observed at particularly low hemolymph levels of AMI, whereas locomotor behaviours were unaffected. Importantly, the predicted hemolymph levels of AMI using the FPM agreed closely with the measured levels. The findings suggest that hemolymph levels of AMI may be a useful indicator of feeding and reproductive disruptions in wild population of freshwater gastropods, and confirm the applicability of the FPM to molluscs for comparative pharmaceutical hazard identification.

Abstract The worm-shaped, shell-less Caudofoveata is one of the least known groups of molluscs. As early-branching molluscs, the lack of high-quality genomes hinders our understanding of their evolution and ecology. Here, we report a high-quality chromosome-scale genome of Chaetoderma sp. combining PacBio, Illumina, and high-resolution chromosome conformation capture sequencing. The final assembly has a size of 2.45 Gb, with a scaffold N50 length of 141.46 Mb, and is anchored to 17 chromosomes. Gene annotations showed a high level of accuracy and completeness, with 23,675 predicted protein-coding genes and 94.44% of the metazoan conserved genes by BUSCO assessment. We further present 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of the gut microbiota in Chaetoderma sp., which was dominated by the chemoautotrophic bacteria (phylum Gammaproteobacteria). This chromosome-level genome assembly presents the first genome for the Caudofoveata, which constitutes an important resource for studies ranging from molluscan evolution, symposium, to deep-sea adaptation.
