Digital media have transformed media’s news gathering, production and news dissemination traditions. However, African language newspapers’ use of digital media has been overlooked and understudied. Therefore, this study explores the adoption of digital media by Isolezwe, a South African indigenous language newspaper that publishes in IsiZulu. Data were gathered using the interview and observation methods. Deploying strands drawn from media convergence and diffusion of innovation theories, the study shows the convergence of African language print media and digital media, and advancement of African language newspapers towards increasing their digital and social media presence. This development has positively enhanced Isolezwe’s journalistic functions of newsgathering and dissemination. The study provides insights into understanding African language journalism in the context of the advancement of digital and communication technologies. Findings from this research show that Isolezwe has expanded its digital presence to social media. Over and above the online version, Isolezwe is also actively engaged on Twitter and Facebook which are the two most popular social networking sites in South Africa. The platforms are strategically deployed for newsgathering and news dissemination purposes. This is a timely contribution to existing scholarship on the adoption of digital media by indigenous languages newspapers in South Africa in particular and Africa in general. The study also provides insights into understanding African language journalism in the context of the advancement of digital and communication technologies.

O período de paz e prosperidade que teve início em 1991 com a dissolução da URSS - e terminou com os ataques ao centro financeiro dos EUA, em 11 de setembro de 2001 -, é interpretado como uma segunda Belle Époque e antecedeu a era das guerras globais. Radicalmente diferente em suas táticas e estratégias, as guerras globais, quando comparadas às guerras anteriores, são mobilizadas em razão de diversos dispositivos de desumanização e demonização do outro. A construção do inimigo nas guerras globais é a principal estratégia para a efetivação dos atuais conflitos e das crises na contemporaneidade, pela qual os senhores da guerra convencem, legitimam e realizam seus novos campos de batalha e, também, seus teatros de guerra. Neste sentido, o papel das mídias e, em especial, da imprensa e dos jornais é respaldar e alimentar a população para a realização dos objetivos beligerantes e dos interesses políticos e econômicos das potências mundiais. After the Cold War, the world powers began to design a new political geometry. The period of peace and prosperity – beginning with the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, and ending with US financial center attacks on September 11, 2001 – is interpreted as a second Belle Époque and preceded the era of global wars. Radically different in their tactics and strategies, global wars, when compared to previous wars, are mobilized via distinct devices of dehumanization and demonization of the next. The enemy construction in global wars is the main strategy for the fulfillment of current conflicts and contemporary crises, by which the warlords convince, legitimize and realize their new battlefields and, moreover, their theaters of war. In this sense, the role of the media and, in particular, the press and newspapers, is to support and feed the population in order to achieve the belligerent objectives and the political and economic interests of the world powers. Global wars have transformed language – ergo, the power of words – into a weapon of attack and defense, exponentially providing the very dynamics of the new social order and the permanent return of armed conflicts

Структурно-прагматичний аналіз мови сучасних австралійських газет здійснено через призму структурних особливостей побудови власне газетного тексту, ролі та місця заголовка. Досліджено лексичні, фразеологічні та синтаксичні особливості побудови різножанрових газетних повідомлень. Особливу увагу звернуто на мультимодальність – використання одиниць різних знакових систем на рівні цілого видання, окремої рубрики чи публікації, рекламних текстів та їхніх заголовків. Звернуто увагу на такі диференційні ознаки мови газет, як використання форм простого теперішнього часу замість минулого, лексичних скорочень, еліптичних речень, форм інфінітиву замість майбутнього часу, інверсіії тощо. Характерним для мови газет є використання великої кількості посилань на імена та назви, оскільки це надає більшої конкретики повідомленням. У той же час такий прийом вимагає від читачів певного рівня фонових знань. Особливий акцент зроблено на аналізі структурних особливостей та маніпулятивно-прагматичних потенцій заголовків. Заголовок виконує важливі завдання уже на першому етапі ознайомлення читача з текстом – притягнути його увагу і викликати зацікавлення. Це стає можливим через втілення виразної, номінативної та рекламної функцій, які реалізуються графічно. Крім того, важлива роль заголовка полягає в тому, щоб спонукати до прочитання тексту публікації, що реалізується через інформативну функцію, адже саме у заголовку сконденсовано її зміст і сенс. Оскільки сучасні газетні тексти відзначаються поліфонічністю, гібридністю та складністю композиції, то і сучасний заголовок наділений смисловою об’ємністю та комунікативно-функційною багатозначністю. З точки зору прагматики газетні заголовки характеризуються зовнішньою спрямованістю. У сучасній пресі вплив на читача, його емоційну та інтелектуальну сферу – це основне завдання заголовка, тому кожен заголовок несе не просто інформацію, а передає ставлення автора до змісту статті, повідомлення чи реклами, а також до фактів, викладених у них. This article is devoted to the structural pragmatic analysis of the language of modern Australian newspapers which is conducted from on the basis of the structural composition of a newspaper text, and the role and place of a headline in it. Lexical, phraseological and syntactic peculiarities of the structure of the newspaper texts of different genres were taken into account as well. A special attention has been paid to such inseparable component of the language of modern newspapers as multimodality, which is the usage of units of various sign systems on the level of a newspaper, in a separate column or article, advertisements and their headlines. Such distinctive features of the language of newspapers as the usage of the Simple Present tense of the verb instead of the Simple Past, infinitive instead of the Future Tense, lexical abbreviations and shortenings, elliptical sentences, inversion were pointed out. It was found out that it is typical for the language of newspapers to have many references to the authorities, well-known people and places because such references make the newspaper articles more precise and accurate. At the same time this method requires from the readers a certain level of background knowledge. A special accent has been made on the analysis of the structural peculiarities and manipulative pragmatic potentials of headlines. A headline performs very important tasks at the very first stage when a reader looks at the newspaper – it draws his attention and makes him interested in the material. It becomes possible thanks to the realization of the expressive, nominative and advertising functions that are implemented graphically. Besides this, a very important role of a headline is to make a reader read a newspaper text. This role is realized through an informative function as it is in the headline where the content of a newspaper text and its sense are condensed. As modern newspaper texts are characterized by polyphony, hybridity and a composition complexity, a modern headline is semantically deep and communicatively and functionally polysemantic. From the point of view of pragmatics, newspapers’ headlines are externally focused. In modern mass media an influence on a person, his emotional and intellectual spheres are considered to be the main tasks of a headline, that is why every headline does not only convey a piece of information but is shows an attitude of the author towards the content of an article, information or advertisement and towards the facts given in them.

This article focuses on media coverage of the sporting “civilizing mission” that the American YMCA initiated in the Philippines, Japan, and China through the founding of the Far Eastern Championship Games (1913–1934), the biggest regional sports event held during the interwar period. It analyzes a number of cartoons printed in Philippine English-language newspapers, which communicated visions of a “modern” Asia meeting Western civilization. Cartoons dealing with the Asian capability for self-government in sports show that between the 1910s and 1930s images of Asian bodily and social deficits and of American expertise were substituted with images showing Asian officials appropriating the “civilizing mission.” The analysis of cartoons about internationalism and egalitarianism illustrates that in 1934 all newspapers saw these ideals as part of “civilization” and rejected Japanese expansionism. Cartoons featuring gender roles reflect the fact that female athletes were still a marginal topic for cartoonists. Finally, the depiction of stadiums promoted development successes.

This study addresses how minority language newspapers develop a positive sense of psychological distinctiveness between the minority and the majority language groups in bilingual settings. The research builds on qualitative interviews conducted with journalists of four minority language dailies: Dolomiten (a German daily in Italy), Haromszek (a Hungarian daily in Romania), Vasabladet and Hufvudstadsbladet (Swedish dailies in Finland). Two main themes were identified: perceived differences between the minority language and majority language newspapers, and attitudes toward approaching the majority language speaking audience. The operation of the newspapers was labeled with different identity management strategies such as competition, creativity, and mobility.

The issues of KurdishLanguage and Kurdish Language Identity has been highly evident through thebeginnings of twentieth century. The significant changes that took place inpolitical and cultural aspects in Kurdistan has gave the birth of numerousjournals and magazines which clearly expressed the general circumstances of thetwentieth century. This research under the title "Issue of Literacy andKurdish Written Language in Certain Journals and Magazines in the EarlyTwentieth Century" aims to provide a wide analysis on the related issuesexpressed through the common journals and magazines. The research covers fivejournals and magazines issued between1920-1932 and shades light on a number ofefforts done by the Fourth Power (Power of Journalism) to highlight thelanguage and Kurdish language study issues as a national privileges after theeffects caused by the division of Kurdistan, Iraqi Government establishment andthe British policy in the region. The common challenges can be literacyencouragement, spelling, language purification and requests to solve schools'problems, and these challenges will be the discussing topics in the research.There are many external and internal factors that caused the given challenges,that's why the writers and journalists boldly and eagerly discussed thechallenges and were part of the solutions by giving suggestions and pointingthe weaknesses through various techniques and evidences.

The media is recognised as an increasingly important source of information about health risk and disease for non-professionals. The issue for public health actors is the accuracy and objectivity of such information. But the media do not neutrally transmit expert information on health risk; they also contribute to shaping it. Media studies show that the media have their own modus operandi and produce content that satisfies the criteria of newsworthiness and media-value. The objective of our research was to analyse how newspapers represent hypertension as a health risk factor, to examine how these representations relate to media-value characteristics, and to reveal differences between serious, popular, and tabloid newspapers. Our findings show that, in their coverage of hypertension, the newspapers we analysed accentuate features that come closest to media-value characteristics of health risk. Syftet med den här studien är att undersöka utvecklingen av tidningsspråk i utvalda artiklar från 1915–2015 med nedslag vart tionde år. Tesen är att språket har blivit informellare under 2000-talet i jämförelse med tidigt 1900-tal. Det som undersöks är utvecklingen av LIX, andel långa ord, genomsnittlig meningslängd, vänstertunga meningar, rubrikslängd, particip, manlig form och epitet. Dessa kategorier kopplas till formellt språk. Resultaten visar att från 1915 till 2015 har LIX-värde, andel långa ord och meningslängd minskat medan vänstertunga meningar och rubrikslängd har blivit kortare. Meningslängd och vänstertunga meningar har halverats under 100 år och rubrikslängden har blivit kortare för att underrubriker har flyttats till brödtexten. Particip, manlig form och epitet upphör helt i de yngsta artiklarna. Alla kategorier förutom vänstertunga meningar och epitet uppvisar en nedåtgående trend. Jag drar slutsatsen att språket i dessa nyhetsartiklar har blivit informellare, vilket kan kopplas till en generell utveckling mot informellt språk inom alla medier under 2000-talet. En orsak till ett mer informellt språk kan vara att längden på dessa nyhetsartiklar har förändrats. Äldre artiklar liknar notiser i jämförelse med yngre artiklar. De sistnämnda tillåter utveckling av resonemang som tidigare inte fått ta plats i artiklarna och språket har på så sätt blivit mer informellt.

Rad se bavi istraživanjem morfoloških i sintaktičkih obilježja u jeziku suvremenih hrvatskih medija. Iako se mediji stalno razvijaju, danas se govori o postojanju četiriju medija, a to su internet, televizija, radio i novine. Primjeri koji se navode u radu preuzeti su s različitih mrežnih portala te iz novinskih članaka 24 sata, Glasa Slavonije te Večernjega lista. Izdvojeni su primjeri pravilne i nepravilne uporabe kako bi se dobio uvid u kojoj se mjeri mediji pridržavaju, odnosno ne pridržavaju propisanih pravila. Na morfološkoj razini promatrana je uporaba određenih glagolskih vremena i načina (futura I., kondicionala I.) te oblika (glagolskog priloga i pridjeva), te pridjevi (navesci), zamjenice (neodređene), prijedlozi (između/među, s/sa, za + G/A/I, iz + G, tokom/tijekom i parni prijedlozi) i veznici (ni/niti, bez obzira na to da, s obzirom na to da). Na sintaktičkoj razini opisan je položaj enklitike, posvojni genitiv/pridjev, nepunoznačni glagoli/glagolske imenice, a na pravopisnoj zarez u složenim rečenicama.
