Traditional infant monitoring systems are evolving into intelligent solutions, offering real-time notifications and automation to cater to the demands of multitasking parents. However, most IoT solutions in parental care focus solely on monitoring, lacking automatic smartphone control. In response to this gap, we developed an IoT-based system for automatic cradle monitoring. This system not only enables smartphone-based monitoring but also allows parents to control the cradle's swing speed and receive notifications through a mobile application. Our solution integrates PIR and sound sensors, an ESP8266 microcontroller, and a Wi-Fi module to create a robust monitoring system that tracks a baby's movements and sounds, sending instant notifications to the smartphone. The user can activate the system and adjust the cradle's motion using a slider based on sensor data. This IoT-enabled smart baby cradle enhances convenience and reduces parental stress, ensuring infant well-being and safety. A survey conducted among Universiti Teknologi MARA instructors revealed that 70% preferred automatic swing cradles over traditional ones, and 80% expressed the need for IoT integration in infant cradles, highlighting the growing demand for such advanced solutions.

This article presents an indoor infant monitoring system based on Android system which employs a low-cost Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) pseudolite to accurately locate the infants in the activity indoors and timely remind the parents. It can achieve a positioning accuracy better than 2 m and effectively reduce the risk of injury to infants and young children. The performance of the proposed system, using false negative rate, false alarm rate, and alarm response time as indicators, is compared with that of the system using Quuppa as a positioning source. The experiment results show that both BLE pseudolite and Quuppa as a positioning source can basically meet the positioning accuracy for the infant monitoring system, but the BLE-pseudolite-based system provides a more cost-efficient solution.

Ensuring the safety of infants around swimming pools or hazardous areas can be tasking for caregivers and their parents. Providing safety devices that can keep track of infants and prevent them from going to unauthorized locations is very necessary. The study aims to design and implement an infant safety system that uses a Piezoelectric sensor. The paper constructed a system to alert parents of an infant's attempted entry into a dangerous area, such as balconies and swimming pools, and it also incorporated an automatic door-locking system around the location. The Piezoelectric Sensor Infant Monitoring System was designed to enhance infant safety at home. The system utilized piezoelectric transducers and pressure sensors, incorporating an automatic door to secure unauthorized zones. Components like Arduino Nano, an LCD, and a buzzer were used to create the prototype. The device was designed to harvest energy by converting mechanical energy from ambient vibrations into electrical energy that will send signals to the GSM module, alerting the homeowner by sending a call. The model adopts the technology of pressure control, and when the pressure reaches a set value and the dial of the scale reaches a specific value simultaneously, the automatic door will open. The test proved the system's effectiveness in accurately detecting and blocking an infant, but it only grants access to authorized individuals while alerting caregivers. The Piezoelectric sensor safety system offers a practical solution for enhancing infant monitoring for safety and preventing avoidable mishaps, thereby reducing infant mortality and morbidity in present times. Non-contact visual monitoring of vital signs in neonatology has been demonstrated by several recent studies in ideal scenarios where the baby is calm and there is no medical or parental intervention. Similar to contact monitoring methods (e.g., ECG, pulse oximeter) the camera-based solutions suffer from motion artifacts. Therefore, during care and the infants’ active periods, calculated values typically differ largely from the real ones. In this way, our main contribution to existing remote camera-based techniques is to detect and classify such situations with a high level of confidence. Our algorithms can not only evaluate quiet periods, but can also provide continuous monitoring. Altogether, our proposed algorithms can measure pulse rate, breathing rate, and to recognize situations such as medical intervention or very active subjects using only a single camera, while the system does not exceed the computational capabilities of average CPU-GPU-based hardware. The performance of the algorithms was evaluated on our database collected at the Ist Dept. of Neonatology of Pediatrics, Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary.
