Search

Context. Increasing the statistics of evolved massive stars in the Local Group enables investigating their evolution at different metallicities. During the late stages of stellar evolution, the physics of some phenomena, such as episodic and systematic mass loss, are not well constrained. For example, the physical properties of red supergiants (RSGs) in different metallicity regimes remain poorly understood. Thus, we initiated a systematic study of RSGs in dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs) in the Local Group. Aims. We aim to derive the fundamental physical parameters of RSGs and characterize the RSG population in nearby dIrrs. Methods. The target selection is based on 3.6 μm and 4.5 μm photometry from archival Spitzer Space Telescope images of nearby galaxies. We selected 46 targets in the dIrrs IC 10, IC 1613, Sextans B, and the Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte (WLM) galaxy that we observed with the GTC–OSIRIS and VLT–FORS2 instruments. We used several photometric techniques together with a spectral energy distribution analysis to derive the luminosities and effective temperatures of known and newly discovered RSGs. Results. We identified and spectroscopically confirmed 4 new RSGs, 5 previously known RSGs, and 5 massive asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We added known objects from previous observations. In total, we present spectral classification and fundamental physical parameters of 25 late-type massive stars in the following dIrrs: Sextans A, Sextans B, IC 10, IC 1613, Pegasus, Phoenix, and WLM. This includes 17 RSGs and 8 AGB stars that have been identified here and previously. Conclusions. Based on our observational results and PARSEC evolutionary models, we draw the following conclusions: (i) a trend to higher minimum effective temperatures at lower metallicities and (ii) the maximum luminosity of RSGs appears to be constant at log(L/L⊙)≈5.5, independent of the metallicity of the host environment (up to [Fe/H] ≈ −1 dex). Context. Star formation activity is an important driver of galaxy evolution and is influenced by the physical properties of the interstellar medium. Dwarf galaxies allow us to understand how the propagation of radiation and the physical conditions of the different ISM phases are affected by the low-metallicity environment. Aims. Our objective is to investigate the physical properties of the ionized gas of the low-metallicity dwarf galaxy, IC 10, at various spatial scales: from individual H II regions to the entire galaxy scale and examine whether diagnostics for integrated measurements introduce bias in the results. Methods. We modeled the ionized gas combining the mid- and far-infrared fine-structure cooling lines observed with Spitzer/IRS and Herschel/PACS, with the photoionization code CLOUDY. The free parameters of the models are the age of the stellar cluster, the density, and the ionization parameter of the ionized gas as well as the depth of the cloud. The latter is used to investigate the leakage of the ionizing photons from the analyzed regions of IC 10. We investigated H II regions in the main star-forming body, on scales of ~25 pc, three in the main star-forming region in the center of the galaxy and two on the first arc. We then considered larger sizes on the scale of ~200 pc. Results. Most clumps have almost-identical properties, density ~102–102.6 cm−3, ionization parameter between 10−2.2 and 10−1.6, and age of the stellar cluster ~5.5 Myr. All of them are matter-bounded regions, allowing ionizing photons to leak. The relatively uniform physical properties of the clumps suggest a common origin for their star formation activity, which could be related to the feedback from stellar winds or supernovae of a previous generation of stars. The properties derived for ~200 pc size "zones" have similar properties as the H II regions they encompass, but with the larger regions tending to be more radiation bounded. Finally, we investigated the fraction of [CII] 157.7 μm, [SiII] 34.8 μm and [FeII] 25.9 μm emission arising from the ionized gas phase and we find that most of the emission originates from the neutral gas, not from the ionized gas. We report the most sensitive search yet for X‐ray pulsars in the dwarf starburst galaxy IC 10, which is known to contain a population of young, high‐mass X‐ray binaries. We searched for pulsations in 207 point‐like X‐ray sources in the direction of IC 10 by a 2012 XMM‐Newton observation with a total exposure time of 134.5 ks. Pulsation searches in faint objects can be sensitive to the energy bands of the light curves, as well as the source and background extraction areas. We analyzed separately the PN and metal–oxide–semiconductor barycenter corrected 0.2–12 keV data, with good time interval filtering. Different schemes for source and background extraction were compared, and the search was repeated in the narrower 0.5–8 keV energy band to increase the signal‐to‐noise ratio. For the most conservative parameters, five point sources produced significant peaks in the Lomb–Scargle periodogram (99% significance, single trial, assuming white noise). A similar number of different candidates result from alternative analyses. A ∼4,100 s period seen in all three instruments for the black hole (BH) + Wolf–Rayet binary IC 10 X‐1 is probably due to red noise of astrophysical origin. Considering the periods, luminosities, and spatial distribution of the pulsar candidates in the direction of IC 10, they do not belong to the same distribution as the ones in the Magellanic Clouds and Milky Way. This result holds even if the candidates are spurious, since if the Small Magellanic Cloud were placed at the distance of IC 10, we would expect to see nearly five pulsars at Lx > 1036 erg s–1 inside the D25 contour, and their periods would be of order 100 s, rather than the mostly ∼1 s periods for the candidates reported here, which lie outside the main body of the galaxy. IC 10 as a starburst dwarf galaxy in the Local Group (LG) has a large population of newly formed stars that are massive and intrinsically very bright in comparison with other LG galaxies. Using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) with the Wide Field Camera (WFC) in the i-band and V-band, we performed an optical monitoring survey to identify the most evolved asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs) and red supergiant stars (RSGs) in this star-forming galaxy, which can be used to determine the star formation history (SFH). The E(B - V) as an effective factor for obtaining the precise magnitude of stars is measured for each star using a 2D dust map (SFD98) to obtain a total extinction for each star in both the i-band and V-band. We obtained the photometric catalog for 53579 stars within the area of 0.07 deg2 (13.5 kpc2), of which 762 stars are classified as variable candidates after removing the foreground stars and saturated ones from our catalog. To reconstruct the SFH for IC 10, we first identified 424 long-period variable (LPV) candidates within the area of two half-light radii (2r h ) from the center of the galaxy. We estimated the recent star formation rate (SFR) at ∼ 0.32 yr-1 for a constant metallicity Z = 0.0008, showing the galaxy is currently undergoing high levels of star formation. Context. We report the detection of oxygen-rich circumstellar envelopes in stars of the nearby (700 kpc) starburst galaxy IC 10. The star-formation history and the chemical environment of this galaxy make it an ideal target to observe dust production by massive stars in a metal-poor environment. Aims. The goal of this study is to identify oxygen-rich stars in IC 10 and to constrain their nature between asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs), red supergiants (RSGs), and other bright infrared sources. We examine the mass-loss rates of the stars and compare to results obtained for the Magellanic Clouds. Our objectives are to (1) assess whether RSGs can be significant dust producers in IC 10, and (2), solve the discrepancy between the star-formation history of IC 10 and the relatively low number of RSGs detected in the optical. Methods. We search for silicate dust in emission by using the spectral map observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The optical (UBVRI) and infrared (JHK, Spitzer/IRAC and Spitzer/MIPS) photometry are used to assert the membership of the stars to IC 10 and distinguish between AGBs and RSGs. Radiative models are used to infer mass-loss rates and stellar luminosities. Results. The luminosity and colors of at least 9 silicate emission sources are consistent with stars within IC 10. Furthermore, the photometry of 2 of these sources is consistent with RSGs. We derive dust mass-loss rates similar to the values found in the Magellanic Clouds. We present the results of the first spectroscopic observations of two planetary nebula (PN) candidates in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10. Using several spectral classification diagrams, we show that the brightest PN candidate (PN 7) is not a PN, but rather a compact H ii region consisting of two components with low electron number densities. After the rejection of this PN candidate, the IC 10 PN luminosity function cut-off becomes very close to the standard value. With the compiled spectroscopic data for a large number of extragalactic PNe, we analyse a series of diagnostic diagrams to generate quantitative criteria for separating PNe from unresolved H ii regions. We show that, with the help of the diagnostic diagrams and the derived set of criteria, PNe can be distinguished from H ii regions with an efficiency of ∼99.6 per cent. With the obtained spectroscopic data, we confirm that another, 1.7 mag fainter PN candidate (PN 9) is a genuine PN. We argue that, based on all currently available PNe data, IC 10 is located at a distance of 725+63−33 kpc [distance modulus ]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an X-ray study of our nearest starburst galaxy IC 10, based on XMM–Newton and Chandra observations. A list of 73 XMM–Newton and 28 Chandra detections of point-like X-ray sources in the field is provided; a substantial fraction of them are likely stellar objects in the Milky Way due to the low Galactic latitude location of IC 10. The brightest source in the IC 10 field, X-1, has a mean 0.3–8.0 keV luminosity of and shows a large variation by a factor of up to ∼6 on time-scales of ∼104 s during the XMM–Newton observation. The X-ray spectra of the source indicate the presence of a multicolour blackbody accretion disc with an inner disc temperature . These results are consistent with the interpretation of the source as a stellar mass black hole (BH), probably accreting from a Wolf–Rayet (W–R) star companion. We infer the mass of this BH to be if it is not spinning, or a factor of up to ∼6 higher if there is significant spinning. We also detect an apparent diffuse soft X-ray emission component of IC 10. An effective method is devised to remove the X-ray CCD-readout streaks of X-1 that strongly affect the study of the diffuse component in the XMM–Newton and Chandra observations. We find that the diffuse X-ray morphology is oriented along the optical body of the galaxy and is chiefly associated with starburst regions. The diffuse component can be characterized by an optically thin thermal plasma with a mean temperature of and a 0.5–2 keV luminosity of , representing only a small fraction of the expected mechanical energy inputs from massive stars in the galaxy. There is evidence that the hot gas is driving outflows from the starburst regions; therefore, the bulk of the energy inputs may be released in a galactic wind. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

H  i observations of the nearby blue compact dwarf galaxy IC 10 obtained with the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory synthesis telescope, for a total integration of ∼1000 h, are presented. We confirm the NW faint 21 cm H  i emission feature discovered in Green Bank Telescope (GBT) observations. The H  i feature has an H  i mass of 4.7 × 105 M⊙, which is only ∼0.6  |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the total H  i mass of the galaxy (7.8 × 107 M⊙). In the inner disc, the rotation curve of IC 10 rises steeply, then flattens until the last point where it rises again, with a maximum velocity of 30 km s−1. Based on our mass models, the kinematics of the inner disc of IC 10 can be described without the need of a dark matter halo. However, this does not exclude the possible presence of dark matter on a larger scale. It is unlikely that the disturbed features seen in the outer H  i disc of IC 10 are caused by an interaction with M 31. Features seen from our simulations are larger and at lower surface density than can be reached by current observations. The higher velocity dispersions seen in regions where several distinct H  i features meet with the main core of IC 10 suggest that there is ongoing accretion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superbubbles are crucial for stellar feedback, with supposedly high (of the order of 10 per cent) thermalization rates. We combined multiband radio continuum observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) with Effelsberg data to study the non-thermal superbubble (NSB) in IC 10, a starburst dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. Thermal emission was subtracted using a combination of Balmer Hα and VLA 32 GHz continuum maps. The bubble's non-thermal spectrum between 1.5 and 8.8 GHz displays curvature and can be well fitted with a standard model of an ageing cosmic ray electron population. With a derived equipartition magnetic field strength of 44 ± 8 μG, and measuring the radiation energy density from Spitzer MIPS maps as 5 ± 1 × 10−11 erg cm−3, we determine, based on the spectral curvature, a spectral age of the bubble of 1.0 ± 0.3 Myr. Analysis of the LITTLE THINGS H i data cube shows an expanding H i hole with 100 pc diameter and a dynamical age 3.8 ± 0.3 Myr, centred to within 16 pc on IC 10 X-1, a massive stellar mass black hole (M > 23 M⊙). The results are consistent with the expected evolution for a superbubble with a few massive stars, where a very energetic event like a Type Ic supernova/hypernova has taken place about 1 Myr ago. The nature of the synchrotron superbubble in the IC 10 galaxy is discussed using the results of our investigation of its ionized gas structure, kinematics and emission spectrum from observations made with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and based on our analysis of the radio emission of the region. The hypernova explosion is shown to be a more plausible mechanism of formation of the synchrotron superbubble compared with the earlier proposed model of multiple supernova explosions. A compact remnant of this hypernova may be identified with the well-known X-ray binary X-1 – an accreting black hole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Local Group starburst galaxy IC 10 is the closest example of a blue compact galaxy. Here, we use optical gi imaging from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope/MegaCam and near infrared JHK imaging from United Kingdom Infrared Telescope/Wide Field Camera to conduct a comprehensive survey of the structure of IC 10. We examine the spatial distribution of its resolved young, intermediate and old stellar populations to large radius and low effective surface brightness levels. Akin to other dwarfs with multiple populations of different ages, stellar populations of decreasing average age are increasingly concentrated in this galaxy. We find that the young, starbursting population and the asymptotic giant branch population are both offset from the geometric centre of the older red giant branch (RGB) population by a few hundred parsecs, implying that the younger star formation occurred significantly away from the centre of the galaxy. The RGB population traces an extended structure that is typical of blue compact galaxies, with an effective radius of ~5.75 arcmin (~1.25 kpc). These measurements show that IC 10 is much more extended than has previously been realized, and this blue compact galaxy is one of the most extended dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. The outermost isophotes of this galaxy are very regular in shape and essentially circular in morphology. Based on this analysis, we do not find any evidence to suggest that IC 10 has undergone a recent, significant, interaction with an unknown companion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of medium-resolution spectroscopy of 28 globular clusters (GCs) in six nearby galaxies of different luminosities and morphological types, situated in M33 (15 objects), M31 (three), IC10 (four), UGCA86 (four), Holmberg IX (one) and DDO71 (one) obtained at the Special Astrophysical Observatory 6-m telescope. Measurements of Lick absorption line indices and comparison with Simple Stellar Population models enabled us to obtain their spectroscopic ages, metallicities and -element to Fe abundance ratios. We found that all old- and intermediate-age GCs in our sample have low metallicities dex. Metal-rich clusters are young and are preferentially found in galaxies more massive than . The least massive dwarfs of our sample, DDO71 and Holmberg IX, host one massive intermediate-age and one massive young metal-poor GC, respectively. [ /Fe] abundance ratios tend to be enhanced but closer to solar values for dwarf galaxies compared to GCs in more massive galaxies. We analyse the age–metallicity relation for GCs in our sample and others from the literature, and find that (1) there is a general trend for GCs in low surface brightness dwarf galaxies to be more metal-poor at a given age than GCs in more massive galaxies; (2) the GC metallicity spread is wider for more massive galaxies and (3) intermediate-age GCs in early-type dwarf galaxies are more metal-rich at any given age than those in irregular galaxies of similar luminosity. Dense molecular gas and star formation are correlated in galaxies. The effect of low metallicity on this relationship is crucial for interpreting observations of high-redshift galaxies, which have lower metallicities than galaxies today. However, it remains relatively unexplored because dense molecular gas tracers like HCN and HCO+ are faint in low-metallicity systems. We present Green Bank Telescope observations of HCN(1–0) and HCO+(1–0) on giant molecular cloud (34 pc) scales in the nearby low-metallicity () starburst IC 10 and compare them to those in other galaxies. We detect HCN and HCO+ in one and three of five pointings, respectively. The values are within the range seen in other galaxies, but are most similar to those seen in other low-metallicity sources and in starbursts. The detections follow the fiducial – and – relationships. These trends suggest that HCN and HCO+ can be used to trace dense molecular gas at metallicities of 1/4 Z⊙, to first order. The dense gas fraction is similar to that in spiral galaxies, but lower than that in U/LIRGs. The dense molecular gas star formation efficiency, however, is on the upper end of those in normal galaxies and consistent with those in U/LIRGs. These results suggest that the CO and HCN/HCO+ emission occupy the same relative volumes as they do at higher metallicity, but that the entire emitting structure is reduced in size. The Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10 is the nearest starburst galaxy (at 725 kpc) and presents extended and complex HI kinematics. It is believed that IC 10 is still experiencing an intense and very recent burst of star formation, likely triggered by infalling gas from an extended envelope which is counter-rotating with respect to the galaxy proper rotation. In this contribution we summarize our preliminary results (Gonçalves et al. 2011, in prep.) obtained by performing a kinematic analysis of the PN population of IC 10. Our aim is to explore the kinematic connection of its intermediate to old stellar populations with that obtained from HI observations. We present a survey of star clusters in the halo of IC 10, a starburst galaxy in the Local Group, based on Subaru R-band images and NOAO Local Group Survey UBVRI images. We find five new star clusters. All of these star clusters are located far from the center of IC 10, while previously known star clusters are mostly located in the main body. Interestingly, the distribution of these star clusters shows an asymmetrical structure elongated along the east and southwest directions. We derive UBVRI photometry of 66 star clusters, including these new star clusters, as well as previously known star clusters. Ages of the star clusters are estimated from a comparison of their UBVRI spectral energy distribution with the simple stellar population models. We find that the star clusters in the halo are all older than 1 Gyr, while those in the main body have various ages, from very young (several Myr) to old ( Gyr). The young clusters ( Myr) are mostly located in the Hα emission regions and are concentrated on a small region at in the southeast direction from the galaxy center, while the old clusters are distributed in a wider area than the disk. Intermediate-age clusters (∼100 Myr) are found in two groups. One is close to the location of the young clusters and the other is at from the location of the young clusters.
