Common denominator communications examines dialogic pedagogy together with modes of communications rooted in "hierological", "equity", "inclusive", and "peer" driven foundations. It examines limits and utility in applying these foundations in the classroom. The relationship between these modes and how it may assist in the development of an effective "teaching lens" that confers the common denominator strategy to bring the majority of students to view the curriculum in the same context and understanding regardless of halo considerations associated with both "equity' and "inclusive" classroom schemes. It further examines how individual foundation paradigms align for goal driven objectives and drift back towards foundation norms after the consensus achieves its desired learning goals.

We consider the transfer of time-sensitive information in next-generation (NextG) communication systems in the presence of a deep learning based eavesdropper capable of jamming detected transmissions, subject to an average power budget. A decoy-based anti-jamming strategy is presented to confuse a jammer, causing it to waste power when disrupting decoy messages instead of real messages. We investigate the effectiveness of the anti-jamming strategy to guarantee timeliness of NextG communications in addition to reliability objectives, analyzing the Age of Information subject to jamming and channel effects. We assess the effect of power control, which determines the success of a transmission but also affects the accuracy of the adversary's detection, making it more likely for the jammer to successfully identify and jam the communication. Recent advances in sensing and computer vision (CV) technologies have opened the door for the application of deep learning (DL)-based CV technologies in the realm of 6G wireless communications. For the successful application of this emerging technology, it is crucial to have a qualified vision dataset tailored for wireless applications (e.g., RGB images containing wireless devices such as laptops and cell phones). An aim of this paper is to propose a large-scale vision dataset referred to as Vision Objects for Millimeter and Terahertz Communications (VOMTC). The VOMTC dataset consists of 20,232 pairs of RGB and depth images obtained from a camera attached to the base station (BS), with each pair labeled with three representative object categories (person, cell phone, and laptop) and bounding boxes of the objects. Through experimental studies of the VOMTC datasets, we show that the beamforming technique exploiting the VOMTC-trained object detector outperforms conventional beamforming techniques.

Terahertz (THz) band communication, ranging from 0.1 THz to 10 THz, is envisioned as a key enabling technology for next-generation networks and future applications such as inter-satellite communications and environmental sensing. The surging number of space debris in Low Earth Orbit poses a big threat to orbital infrastructure and the development of the space economy. In particular, despite the ability to detect and track large-scale space debris, millions of space debris with a radius within the range of 0.1-10 cm and velocity exceeding 1 km/s remains hard to detect with conventional ground-based radars and optical telescopes. In this study, a dual-functional frequency modulated continuous waveform (FMCW) operating in the THz band is adopted for space debris sensing and inter-satellite communications. Specifically, the radar cross section of space debris with various sizes in the THz band is analyzed to demonstrate the feasibility of THz space debris detection. A joint space debris detection and inter-satellite communications based on the FMCW waveform is derived. Then, the parameter estimation and demodulation algorithms are illustrated. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed method can realize high-accuracy parameter estimation of hypervelocity space debris while achieving high reliability for inter-satellite communications.

In this paper, we address task-oriented (or goal-oriented) communications where an encoder at the transmitter learns compressed latent representations of data, which are then transmitted over a wireless channel. At the receiver, a decoder performs a machine learning task, specifically for classifying the received signals. The deep neural networks corresponding to the encoder-decoder pair are jointly trained, taking both channel and data characteristics into account. Our objective is to achieve high accuracy in completing the underlying task while minimizing the number of channel uses determined by the encoder's output size. To this end, we propose a multi-round, multi-task learning (MRMTL) approach for the dynamic update of channel uses in multi-round transmissions. The transmitter incrementally sends an increasing number of encoded samples over the channel based on the feedback from the receiver, and the receiver utilizes the signals from a previous round to enhance the task performance, rather than only considering the latest transmission. This approach employs multi-task learning to jointly optimize accuracy across varying number of channel uses, treating each configuration as a distinct task. By evaluating the confidence of the receiver in task decisions, MRMTL decides on whether to allocate additional channel uses in multiple rounds. We characterize both the accuracy and the delay (total number of channel uses) of MRMTL, demonstrating that it achieves the accuracy close to that of conventional methods requiring large numbers of channel uses, but with reduced delay by incorporating signals from a prior round. We consider the CIFAR-10 dataset, convolutional neural network architectures, and AWGN and Rayleigh channel models for performance evaluation. We show that MRMTL significantly improves the efficiency of task-oriented communications, balancing accuracy and latency effectively.

Recently, filter-bank multicarrier spread spectrum (FBMC-SS) has been proposed as a candidate waveform for ultra-wideband (UWB) communications. It has been noted that FBMC-SS is a perfect match to this application, leading to a trivial method of matching to the required spectral mask at different regions of the world. FBMC-SS also allows easy rejection of high-power interfering signals that may appear over different parts of the UWB spectral band. In this paper, we concentrate on the use of staggered multitone spread spectrum (SMT-SS) for UWB communications. SMT makes use of offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) to transmit data symbols over narrowband, overlapping subcarrier bands. This form of FBMC-SS is well-suited to UWB communications because it has good spectral efficiency and a flat power spectral density (PSD), resulting in good utilization of the UWB spectral mask. Additionally, we explore new methods for multi-coding that result in higher bit rates than previous FBMC-SS systems. Moreover, we study methods for equalizing the UWB multipath channel and cancelling narrowband interference. This paper investigates semantic communications between a transmitter and a receiver, where original data, such as videos of interest to the receiver, is stored at the transmitter. Although significant process has been made in semantic communications, a fundamental design problem is that the semantic information is extracted based on certain criteria at the transmitter alone, without considering the receiver's specific information needs. As a result, critical information of primary concern to the receiver may be lost. In such cases, the semantic transmission becomes meaningless to the receiver, as all received information is irrelevant to its interests. To solve this problem, this paper presents a receiver-centric generative semantic communication system, where each transmission is initialized by the receiver. Specifically, the receiver first sends its request for the desired semantic information to the transmitter at the start of each transmission. Then, the transmitter extracts the required semantic information accordingly. A key challenge is how the transmitter understands the receiver's requests for semantic information and extracts the required semantic information in a reasonable and robust manner. We address this challenge by designing a well-structured framework and leveraging off-the-shelf generative AI products, such as GPT-4, along with several specialized tools for detection and estimation. Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) has emerged as a means to efficiently utilize spectrum and thereby save cost and power. At the higher end of the spectrum, ISAC systems operate at wideband using large antenna arrays to meet the stringent demands for high-resolution sensing and enhanced communications capacity. On the other hand, the overall design should satisfy energy-efficiency and hardware constraints such as operating on low resolution components for a practical scenario. Therefore, this paper presents the design of Hybrid ANalog and Digital BeAmformers with Low resoLution (HANDBALL) digital-to-analog converters (DACs). We introduce a greedy-search-based approach to design the analog beamformers for multi-user multi-target ISAC scenario. Then, the quantization distortion is taken into account in order to design the baseband beamformer with low resolution DACs. A new class of Multi-Rotor Aerial Vehicles (MRAVs), known as omnidirectional MRAVs (o-MRAVs), has attracted significant interest in the robotics community. These MRAVs have the unique capability of independently controlling their 3D position and 3D orientation. In the context of aerial communication networks, this translates into the ability to control the position and orientation of the antenna mounted on the MRAV without any additional devices tasked for antenna orientation. This additional Degrees of Freedom (DoF) adds a new dimension to aerial communication systems, creating various research opportunities in communications-aware trajectory planning and positioning. This paper presents this new class of MRAVs and discusses use cases in areas such as physical layer security and optical communications. Furthermore, the benefits of these MRAVs are illustrated with realistic simulation scenarios. Task-oriented semantic communication systems have emerged as a promising approach to achieving efficient and intelligent data transmission, where only information relevant to a specific task is communicated. However, existing methods struggle to fully disentangle task-relevant and task-irrelevant information, leading to privacy concerns and subpar performance. To address this, we propose an information-bottleneck method, named CLAD (contrastive learning and adversarial disentanglement). CLAD leverages contrastive learning to effectively capture task-relevant features while employing adversarial disentanglement to discard task-irrelevant information. Additionally, due to the lack of reliable and reproducible methods to gain insight into the informativeness and minimality of the encoded feature vectors, we introduce a new technique to compute the information retention index (IRI), a comparative metric used as a proxy for the mutual information between the encoded features and the input, reflecting the minimality of the encoded features. The IRI quantifies the minimality and informativeness of the encoded feature vectors across different task-oriented communication techniques. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that CLAD outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in terms of task performance, privacy preservation, and IRI. The codebook-based analog beamforming is appealing for future terahertz (THz) communications since it can generate high-gain directional beams with low-cost phase shifters via low-complexity beam training. However, conventional beamforming codebook design based on array response vectors for narrowband communications may suffer from severe performance loss in wideband systems due to the ``beam squint" effect over frequency. To tackle this issue, we propose in this paper a new codebook design method for analog beamforming in wideband THz systems. In particular, to characterize the analog beamforming performance in wideband systems, we propose a new metric termed wideband beam gain, which is given by the minimum beamforming gain over the entire frequency band given a target angle. Based on this metric, a wideband analog beamforming codebook design problem is formulated for optimally balancing the beamforming gains in both the spatial and frequency domains, and the performance loss of conventional narrowband beamforming in wideband systems is analyzed. To solve the new wideband beamforming codebook design problem, we divide the spatial domain into orthogonal angular zones each associated with one beam, thereby decoupling the codebook design into a zone division sub-problem and a set of beamforming optimization sub-problems each for one zone. For the zone division sub-problem, we propose a bisection method to obtain the optimal boundaries for separating adjacent zones. While for each of the per-zone-based beamforming optimization sub-problems, we further propose an efficient augmented Lagrange method (ALM) to solve it. Hybrid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (HRISs) constitute a new paradigm of truly smart metasurfaces with the additional features of signal reception and processing, which have been primarily considered for channel estimation and self-reconfiguration. In this paper, leveraging the simultaneous tunable reflection and signal absorption functionality of HRIS elements, we present a novel framework for the joint design of transmit beamforming and the HRIS parameters with the goal to maximize downlink communications, while simultaneously illuminating an area of interest for guaranteed localization coverage performance. Our simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and showcase the interplay of the various system parameters on the achievable Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) performance.

In this paper, we propose a novel multi-task, multi-link relay semantic communications (MTML-RSC) scheme that enables the destination node to simultaneously perform image reconstruction and classification with one transmission from the source node. In the MTML-RSC scheme, the source node broadcasts a signal using semantic communications, and the relay node forwards the signal to the destination. We analyze the coupling relationship between the two tasks and the two links (source-to-relay and source-to-destination) and design a semantic-focused forward method for the relay node, where it selectively forwards only the semantics of the relevant class while ignoring others. At the destination, the node combines signals from both the source node and the relay node to perform classification, and then uses the classification result to assist in decoding the signal from the relay node for image reconstructing. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MTML-RSC scheme achieves significant performance gains, e.g., $1.73$ dB improvement in peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) for image reconstruction and increasing the accuracy from $64.89\%$ to $70.31\%$ for classification., Comment: submitted to IEEE WCNC

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is regarded as one of the key techniques to enhance the performance of future wireless communications. Different from regular MIMO, the XL-MIMO shifts part of the communication region from the far field to the near field, where the spherical-wave channel model cannot be accurately approximated by the commonly-adopted planar-wave channel model. As a result, the well-explored far-field beamspace is unsuitable for near-field communications, thereby requiring the exploration of specialized near-field beamspace. In this article, we investigate the near-field communications for XL-MIMO from the perspective of beamspace. Given the spherical wavefront characteristics of the near-field channels, we first map the antenna space to the near-field beamspace with the fractional Fourier transform. Then, we divide the near-field beamspace into three parts, including high mainlobe, low mainlobe, and sidelobe, and provide a comprehensive analysis of these components. Based on the analysis, we demonstrate the advantages of the near-field beamspace over the existing methods. Finally, we point out several applications of the near-field beamspace and highlight some potential directions for future study in the near-field beamspace.

Future wireless connectivity is envisioned to accommodate functionalities far beyond broadband data transmission over point-to-point direct links, enabling novel scenarios, such as communication behind blockers and around corners, and innovative concepts, such as situational awareness, localization and joint communications and sensing. In this landscape, beams that are able to propagate on bent paths are ideal candidates for dynamic blockage avoidance, interference management in selected regions, and user connectivity on curved trajectories. In this work, we study beam shaping for applications in near-field wireless connectivity. We explain the underlying mechanism of beam bending and we present the design principles for tailoring the curvature of the propagation trajectory. We discuss design aspects for generation of such beams with large arrays and analyze the impact of several parameters on their performance, including the beam's footprint shape, the aperture size, the inter-element spacing, the sub-array selection of active elements, the available phase levels of the array elements and the operating frequency. We introduce the concept of near-field virtual routing (NFVR) and we demonstrate that such beams are able to address challenges of high frequency communications, such as dynamic routing, blockage avoidance and energy-efficiency, more efficiently than conventional beamforming., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures

In-band Full-Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems offer a significant opportunity for Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) due to their capability to realize simultaneous signal transmissions and receptions. This feature has been recently exploited to devise spectrum-efficient simultaneous information transmission and monostatic sensing operations, a line of research typically referred to as MIMO FD-ISAC. In this article, capitalizing on a recent FD MIMO architecture with reduced complexity analog cancellation, we present an FD-enabled framework for simultaneous communications and sensing using data signals. In contrast to communications applications, the framework's goal is not to mitigate self interference, since it includes reflections of the downlink data transmissions from targets in the FD node's vicinity, but to optimize the system parameters for the intended dual functionality. The unique characteristics and challenges of a generic MIMO FD-ISAC system are discussed along with a broad overview of state-of-the-art special cases, including numerical investigations. This article targets at unlocking the potentials of a class of prominent generative artificial intelligence (GAI) method, namely diffusion model (DM), for mobile communications. First, a DM-driven communication architecture is proposed, which introduces two key paradigms, i.e., conditional DM and DM-driven deep reinforcement learning (DRL), for wireless data generation and communication management, respectively. Then, we discuss the key advantages of DM-driven communication paradigms. To elaborate further, we explore DM-driven channel generation mechanisms for channel estimation, extrapolation, and feedback in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We showcase the numerical performance of conditional DM using the accurate DeepMIMO channel datasets, revealing its superiority in generating high-fidelity channels and mitigating unforeseen distribution shifts in sophisticated scenes. Furthermore, several DM-driven communication management designs are conceived, which is promising to deal with imperfect channels and task-oriented communications. To inspire future research developments, we highlight the potential applications and open research challenges of DM-driven communications. The Time-Domain And MultiMessenger (TDAMM) Communications Science Analysis Group (TDAMMCommSAG) was formulated to describe the unique technical challenges of communicating rapidly to and from NASA astrophysics missions studying the most variable, transient, and extreme objects in the Universe. This report describes the study of if and how the transition from current NASA-operated space and ground relays to commercial services will adequately serve these missions. Depending on the individual mission requirements and Concept of Operations (ConOps), TDAMM missions may utilize a rapid low-rate demand access service, a low-rate continuous contact service, low-latency downlink upon demand, or a higher-latency but regular relay service. The specific implementations can vary via space relay or direct to Earth, but requires flexibility and adaptability using modern software infrastructure. The study team reviewed the current state of NASA communications services and future commercial and NASA communications services under study and in development. Device-to-device (D2D) technology enables direct communication between adjacent devices within cellular networks. Due to its high data rate, low latency, and performance improvement in spectrum and energy efficiency, it has been widely investigated and applied as a critical technology in 5G New Radio (NR). In addition to conventional overlay and underlay D2D communications, cooperative D2D communication, which can achieve a win-win situation between cellular users (CUs) and D2D users (DUs) through cooperative relaying technique, has attracted extensive attention from academic and industrial circles in the past decade. This paper delves into optimizing joint spectrum allocation, power control, and link-matching between multiple CUs and DUs for cooperative D2D communications, using weighted sum energy efficiency (WSEE) as the performance metric to address the challenges of green communication and sustainable development. This integer programming problem can be decomposed into a classic weighted bipartite graph matching and a series of nonconvex spectrum allocation and power control problems between potentially matched cellular and D2D link pairs. To address this issue, we propose a hybrid centralized-distributed scheme based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and the Kuhn-Munkres (KM) algorithm. Leveraging the latter, the CUs and DUs autonomously optimize spectrum allocation and power control by only utilizing local information. Then, the base station (BS) determines the link matching. Simulation results reveal that it achieves near-optimal performance and significantly enhances the network convergence speed with low signaling overheads. Semantic communications are considered a promising beyond-Shannon/bit paradigm to reduce network traffic and increase reliability, thus making wireless networks more energy efficient, robust, and sustainable. However, the performance is limited by the efficiency of the semantic transceivers, i.e., the achievable "similarity" between the transmitted and received signals. Under strict similarity conditions, semantic transmission may not be applicable and bit communication is mandatory. In this paper, for the first time in the literature, we propose a multi-carrier Hybrid Semantic-Shannon communication system where, without loss of generality, the case of text transmission is investigated. To this end, a joint semantic-bit transmission selection and power allocation optimization problem is formulated, aiming to minimize two transmission delay metrics widely used in the literature, subject to strict similarity thresholds. Despite their non-convexity, both problems are decomposed into a convex and a mixed linear integer programming problem by using alternating optimization, both of which can be solved optimally. Furthermore, to improve the performance of the proposed hybrid schemes, a novel association of text sentences to subcarriers is proposed based on the data size of the sentences and the channel gains of the subcarriers. We show that the proposed association is optimal in terms of transmission delay. Numerical simulations verify the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid semantic-bit communication scheme and the derived sentence-to-subcarrier association, and provide useful insights into the design parameters of such systems.

Communication between humans and robots (or virtual agents) is essential for interaction and often inspired by human communication, which uses gestures, facial expressions, gaze direction, and other explicit and implicit means. This work presents an interaction experiment where humans and virtual agents interact through explicit (gestures, manual entries using mouse and keyboard, voice, sound, and information on screen) and implicit (gaze direction, location, facial expressions, and raise of eyebrows) communication to evaluate the effect of mixed explicit-implicit communication against purely explicit communication. Results obtained using Bayesian parameter estimation show that the number of errors and task execution time did not significantly change when mixed explicit and implicit communications were used, and neither the perceived efficiency of the interaction. In contrast, acceptance, sociability, and transparency of the virtual agent increased when using mixed communication modalities (88.3%, 92%, and 92.9% of the effect size posterior distribution of each variable, respectively, were above the upper limit of the region of practical equivalence). This suggests that task-related measures, such as time, number of errors, and perceived efficiency of the interaction, have not been influenced by the communication type in our particular experiment. This paper introduces the minimum error entropy (MEE) criterion as an advanced information-theoretic loss function tailored for deep learning applications in wireless communications. The MEE criterion leverages higher-order statistical properties, offering robustness in noisy scenarios like Rayleigh fading and impulsive interference. In addition, we propose a less computationally complex version of the MEE function to enhance practical usability in wireless communications. The method is evaluated through simulations on two critical applications: over-the-air regression and indoor localization. Results indicate that the MEE criterion outperforms conventional loss functions, such as mean squared error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE), achieving significant performance improvements in terms of accuracy, over $20 \%$ gain over traditional methods, and convergence speed across various channel conditions. This work establishes MEE as a promising alternative for wireless communication tasks in deep learning models, enabling better resilience and adaptability.

The accelerated pace of space exploration and satellite connectivity calls for scalable communication network architectures that can effectively cater for increasing numbers of bursty flows, such as those occurring in remote monitoring and actuation. Communications in Space face unique challenges including highly variable delays and disruptions that sometimes preclude real-time signaling and end-to-end acknowledgements. In this paper we provide a vision for tackling these fundamental challenges by exploiting recent progress in goal-oriented communication. Our vision for Goal-Oriented Networking in Space is built on three pillars: (1) principles and decision metrics for goal-oriented sampling and multi-user scheduling, that can handle highly variable delay processes that contain memory, (2) grant-free access policies for massive machine-type communications that replace exogenous arrivals with goal-oriented traffic shaping, and (3) flow control mechanisms that exploit the cross-layer operability at application and link layers of Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) protocols., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications is an enabling technology to transmit control signaling or payload data for UAVs through cellular networks. Due to the line-of-sight (LoS) dominant air-to-ground channels, efficient interference mitigation is crucial to UAV communications, while the conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays have limited degrees of freedom (DoFs) to suppress the interference between the UAV and its non-associated co-channel base stations (BSs). To address this challenge, we propose in this letter a new approach by utilizing the six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA) arrays to enhance the interference mitigation for the UAV. Specifically, we propose an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm to iteratively optimize the antenna position vector (APV), array rotation vector (ARV), receive beamforming vector, and associated BS of the UAV to maximize its signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Numerical results show that the proposed 6DMA enhanced cellular-connected UAV communication can significantly outperform that with the traditional FPA arrays and other benchmark schemes in terms of interference mitigation.

One of the most intriguing 6G vertical markets is precision agriculture, where communications, sensing, control, and robotics technologies are used to improve agricultural outputs and decrease environmental impact. Ambient IoT (A-IoT), which uses a network of devices that harvest ambient energy to enable communications, is expected to play an important role in agricultural use cases due to its low costs, simplicity, and battery-free (or battery-assisted) operation. In this paper, we review the use cases of precision agriculture and discuss the challenges. We discuss how A-IoT can be used for precision agriculture and compare it with other ambient energy source technologies. In the sixth generation (6G) of cellular networks, the demands for capacity and connectivity will increase dramatically to meet the requirements of emerging services for both humans and machines. Semantic communication has shown great potential because of its efficiency, and suitability for users who only care about the semantic meaning. But bit communication is still needed for users requiring original messages. Therefore, there will be a coexistence of semantic and bit communications in future networks. This motivates us to explore how to allocate resources in such a coexistence scenario. We investigate different uplink multiple access (MA) schemes for the coexistence of semantic users and a bit user, namely orthogonal multiple access (OMA), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA). We characterize the rate regions achieved by those MA schemes. The simulation results show that RSMA always outperforms NOMA and has better performance in high semantic rate regimes compared to OMA. We find that RSMA scheme design, rate region, and power allocation are quite different in the coexistence scenario compared to the bit-only communication, primarily due to the need to consider the understandability in semantic communications. Interestingly, in contrast to bit-only communications where RSMA is capacity achieving without any need for time sharing, in the coexistence scenario, time sharing helps enlarging RSMA rate region.
