Search

The dynamical interactions between young binaries can perturb the material distribution of their circumstellar disks, and modify the planet formation process. In order to constrain the impact and nature of the binary interaction in the RW Aur system (bound or unbound), we analyzed the circumstellar material at 1.3 mm wavelengths, as observed at multiple epochs by ALMA. We analyzed the disk properties through parametric visibility modeling, and we used this information to constrain the dust morphology and the binary orbital period. We imaged the dust continuum emission of RW Aur with a resolution of 3 au, and we find that the radius enclosing 90% of the flux (R90%) is 19 au and 14 au for RW Aur A and B, respectively. By modeling the relative distance of the disks at each epoch, we find a consistent trend of movement for the disk of RW Aur B moving away from the disk of RW Aur A at an approximate rate of 3 mas/yr (about 0.5 au/yr in sky-projected distance). By combining ALMA astrometry, historical astrometry, and the dynamical masses of each star, we constrain the RW Aur binary stars to be most likely in a high-eccentricity elliptical orbit with a clockwise prograde orientation relative to RW Aur A, although low-eccentricity hyperbolic orbits are not ruled out by the astrometry. Our analysis does not exclude the possibility of a disk collision during the last interaction, which occurred $295_{-74}^{+21}$ yr ago relative to beginning of 2024. Evidence for the close interaction is found in a tentative warp of 6 deg in the inner 3 au of the disk of RW Aur A, in the brightness temperature of both disks, and in the morphology of the gas emission. A narrow ring that peaks at 6 au around RW Aur B is suggestive of captured material from the disk around RW Aur A., Comment: Accepted in A&A. After the companion dynamically plunges through the primary's envelope, the two cores remain surrounded by a common envelope and the decrease of the orbital period $P_\text{orb}$ stalls. The subsequent evolution has never been systematically explored with multidimensional simulations. For this study, we performed 3D hydrodynamical simulations of an envelope evolving under the influence of a central binary star using an adaptively refined spherical grid. We followed the evolution over hundreds of orbits of the central binary to characterize the transport of angular momentum by advection, gravitational torques, turbulence, and viscosity. We find that local advective torques from the mean flow and Reynolds stresses associated with the turbulent flow dominate the angular momentum transport, which occurs outward in a disk-like structure about the orbital plane and inward along the polar axis. Turbulent transport is less efficient, but can locally significantly damp or enhance the net angular momentum radial transport and may even reverse its direction. Short-term variability in the envelope is remarkably similar to circumbinary disks, including the formation and destruction of lump-like overdensities, which enhance mass accretion and contribute to the outward transport of eccentricity generated in the vicinity of the binary. If the accretion onto the binary is allowed, the orbital decay timescale settles to a nearly constant value $\tau_\text{b} \sim 10^3$ to $10^4\,P_\text{orb}$, while preventing accretion leads to a slowly increasing $\tau_\text{b} \sim 10^5\,P_\text{orb}$ at the end of our simulations. Our results suggest that the post-dynamical orbital contraction and envelope ejection will slowly continue while the binary is surrounded by gas and that $\tau_\text{b}$ is often much shorter than the thermal timescale of the envelope., Comment: 27 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We have developed a new, fast method of estimating the orbital properties of a binary or triple system using as few as two epochs of astrometric data. FOBOS (Few Observation Binary Orbit Solver) uses a flat prior brute force Monte Carlo method to produce probability density functions of the likely orbital parameters. We test the code on fake observations and show that it can (fairly often) constrain the semi-major axis to within a factor of 2-3, and the inclination to within $\sim$20$^{\circ}$ from only two astrometric observations. We also show that the 68 and 95 per cent confidence intervals are statistically reliable. Applying this method to triple systems allows the relative inclination of the secondary and tertiary star orbits to be constrained. We conducted a spectral and temporal analysis of X-ray data from the Be X-ray binary pulsar SXP 15.6 located in the Small Magellanic Cloud based on NuSTAR, NICER and Swift observations during the 2021 outburst. We present for the first time the broadband X-ray spectra of the system based on simultaneous NuSTAR and NICER observations. Moreover we use monitoring data to study the spectral and temporal properties of the system during the outburst. Comparison of the evolution of the 2021 outburst with archival data reveals a consistent pattern of variability with multiple peaks occurring at time intervals similar to the orbital period of the system (~36 d). Our spectral analysis indicates that most of the energy is released at high energies above 10 keV while we found no cyclotron absorption line in the spectrum. Analysis of the spectral evolution during the outburst, we find that the spectrum is softer-when-brighter, which in turn reveals that the system is probably in the super-critical regime where the accretion column is formed. This places an upper limit to the magnetic field of the system of the order of 7$\times$10$^{11}$ G. The spin-evolution of the neutron star (NS) during the outburst is consistent with an NS with a low magnetic field ($\sim{5}\times$10$^{11}$ G), while there is evident orbital modulation which we modelled and derived the orbital parameters. We found the orbit to have a moderate eccentricity of ~0.3. Our estimates of the magnetic field are consistent with the lack of an electron cyclotron resonance scattering feature in the broadband X-ray spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. We present our final orbit for the late-type spectroscopic binary HD 1. Employed are 553 spectra from 13 years of observations with our robotic STELLA facility and its high-resolution echelle spectrograph SES. Its long-term radial-velocity stability is $\approx$50m/s . A single radial velocity of HD 1 reached a rms residual of 63m/s, close to the expected precision. Spectral lines of HD 1 are rotationally broadened with $v\sin i$ of 9.1$\pm$0.1 km/s . The overall spectrum appears single-lined and yielded an orbit with an eccentricity of 0.5056$\pm$0.0005 and a semi-amplitude of 4.44km/s . We constrain and refine the orbital period based on the SES data alone to 2318.70$\pm$0.32d, compared to 2317.8$\pm$1.1d when including the older data set published by DAO and Cambridge/Coravel. Owing to the higher precision of the SES data, we base the orbit calculation only on the STELLA/SES velocities in order not to degrade its solution. We redetermine astrophysical parameters for HD 1 from spectrum synthesis and, together with the new {\it Gaia} DR-2 parallax, suggest a higher luminosity than published previously. We conclude that HD 1 is a slightly metal-deficient K0 III-II giant 217 times more luminous than the Sun. The secondary remains invisible at optical wavelengths. We present evidence for the existence of a third component.

The pulsar/massive star binary system PSR B1259-63 / LS 2883 is one of the best-studied gamma-ray binaries, a class of systems whose bright gamma-ray flaring can provide important insights into high-energy physics. Using the Australian Long Baseline Array we have conducted very long baseline interferometric observations of PSR B1259-63 over 4.4 years, fully sampling the 3.4-year orbital period. From our measured parallax of $0.38\pm0.05$ mas we use a Bayesian approach to infer a distance of $2.6^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ kpc. We find that the binary orbit is viewed at an angle of $154\pm3$ degrees to the line of sight, implying that the pulsar moves clockwise around its orbit as viewed on the sky. Taking our findings together with previous results from pulsar timing observations, all seven orbital elements for the system are now fully determined. We use our measurement of the inclination angle to constrain the mass of the stellar companion to lie in the range 15-31$M_{\odot}$. Our measured distance and proper motion are consistent with the system having originated in the Cen OB1 association and receiving a modest natal kick, causing it to have moved $\sim$8 pc from its birthplace over the past $\sim3\times10^5$ years. The orientation of the orbit on the plane of the sky matches the direction of motion of the X-ray synchrotron-emitting knot observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory to be moving away from the system., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. v2 is the journal-accepted version. The CO(J=3-2) emission from the CSE of the binary S-type AGB star W Aql has been observed at subarcsecond resolution using ALMA. The aim of this paper is to investigate the wind properties of the AGB star and to analyse how the known companion has shaped the CSE. The average mass-loss rate during the creation of the detected CSE is estimated through modelling, using the ALMA brightness distribution and previously published single-dish measurements as observational constraints. The ALMA observations are presented and compared to the results from a 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) binary interaction model with the same properties as the W Aql system and with two different orbital eccentricities. Three-dimensional radiative transfer modelling is performed and the response of the interferometer is modelled and discussed. The estimated average mass-loss rate of W~Aql agrees with previous results. The size of the emitting region is consistent with photodissociation models. The CO(J=3-2) emission is dominated by a smooth component overlayed with two weak arc patterns with different separations. The larger pattern is predicted by the binary interaction model with separations of 10" and therefore likely due to the known companion. It is consistent with a binary orbit with low eccentricity. The smaller separation pattern is asymmetric and coincides with the dust distribution, but the separation timescale (200 yrs) is not consistent with any known process of the system. The separation of the known companions of the system is large enough to not have a very strong effect on the circumstellar morphology. The density contrast across the envelope of a binary with an even larger separation will not be easily detectable, even with ALMA, unless the orbit is strongly asymmetric or the AGB star has a much larger mass-loss rate., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Knowledge of the chemical composition and absolute masses of Capella are key to understanding the evolutionary state of this benchmark binary system comprising two giant stars. Previous efforts, including our own 2009 study, have largely failed to reach an acceptable agreement between the observations and current stellar evolution models, preventing us from assessing the status of the primary. Here we report a revision of the physical properties of the components incorporating recently published high-precision radial velocity measurements, and a new detailed chemical analysis providing abundances for more than 20 elements in both stars. We obtain highly precise (to about 0.3%) masses of 2.5687 +/- 0.0074 and 2.4828 +/- 0.0067 solar masses, radii of 11.98 +/- 0.57 and 8.83 +/- 0.33 solar radii, effective temperatures of 4970 +/- 50 K and 5730 +/- 60 K, and independently measured luminosities based on the orbital parallax (78.7 +/- 4.2 and 72.7 +/- 3.6 solar luminosities). We find an excellent match to stellar evolution models at the measured composition of [Fe/H] = -0.04 +/- 0.06. Three different sets of models place the primary star firmly at the end of the core helium-burning phase (clump), while the secondary is known to be evolving rapidly across the Hertzprung gap. The measured lithium abundance, the C/N ratio, and the 12C/13C isotopic carbon abundance ratio, which change rapidly in the giant phase, are broadly in agreement with expectations from models. Predictions from tidal theory for the spin rates, spin-orbit alignment, and other properties do not fare as well, requiring a 40-fold increase in the efficiency of the dissipation mechanisms in order to match the observations., Comment: 15 pages in emulateapj format, including figures and tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We report the discovery of the millisecond pulsar (MSP) PSR J1950+2414 ($P=4.3$ ms) in a binary system with an eccentric ($e=0.08$) 22-day orbit in Pulsar ALFA survey observations with the Arecibo telescope. Its companion star has a median mass of 0.3 $M_\odot$ and is most likely a white dwarf. Fully recycled MSPs like this one are thought to be old neutron stars spun-up by mass transfer from a companion star. This process should circularize the orbit, as is observed for the vast majority of binary MSPs, which predominantly have orbital eccentricities $e < 0.001$. However, four recently discovered binary MSPs have orbits with $0.027 < e < 0.44$; PSR J1950+2414 is the fifth such system to be discovered. The upper limits for its intrinsic spin period derivative and inferred surface magnetic field strength are comparable to those of the general MSP population. The large eccentricities are incompatible with the predictions of the standard recycling scenario: something unusual happened during their evolution. Proposed scenarios are a) initial evolution of the pulsar in a triple system which became dynamically unstable, b) origin in an exchange encounter in an environment with high stellar density, c) rotationally delayed accretion-induced collapse of a super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf, and d) dynamical interaction of the binary with a circumbinary disk. We compare the properties of all five known eccentric MSPs with the predictions of these formation channels. The main aim of the present paper is the very first analysis of the binary-orbit precession out of our Galaxy. The light curves of an eclipsing binary MACHO 82.8043.171 in the Large Magellanic cloud (LMC) were studied in order to analyse the long-term evolution of its orbit. It is a detached system that is undergoing rapid orbit precession. The inclination of the orbit towards the observer has been changing, which has caused the eclipse depth to become lower over the past decade, and this is ongoing. The period of this effect was derived as only about 77 years, so it is the second fastest nodal motion known amongst such systems nowadays. This is the first analysis of an extragalactic binary with nodal precession. This effect is probably caused by a distant third body orbiting the pair, which could potentially be detected via spectroscopy. Some preliminary estimates of this body are presented. We present a three-dimensional (3-D) dynamical model for the broad [Fe III] emission observed in Eta Carinae using the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS). This model is based on full 3-D Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of Eta Car's binary colliding winds. Radiative transfer codes are used to generate synthetic spectro-images of [Fe III] emission line structures at various observed orbital phases and STIS slit position angles (PAs). Through a parameter study that varies the orbital inclination i, the PA {\theta} that the orbital plane projection of the line-of-sight makes with the apastron side of the semi-major axis, and the PA on the sky of the orbital axis, we are able, for the first time, to tightly constrain the absolute 3-D orientation of the binary orbit. To simultaneously reproduce the blue-shifted emission arcs observed at orbital phase 0.976, STIS slit PA = +38 degrees, and the temporal variations in emission seen at negative slit PAs, the binary needs to have an i \approx 130 to 145 degrees, {\theta} \approx -15 to +30 degrees, and an orbital axis projected on the sky at a PA \approx 302 to 327 degrees east of north. This represents a system with an orbital axis that is closely aligned with the inferred polar axis of the Homunculus nebula, in 3-D. The companion star, Eta B, thus orbits clockwise on the sky and is on the observer's side of the system at apastron. This orientation has important implications for theories for the formation of the Homunculus and helps lay the groundwork for orbital modeling to determine the stellar masses., Comment: 23 pages, 12 color figures, plus 2 online-only appendices (available in the /anc folder of the Source directory). High-dispersion spectroscopic observations are used to refine orbital elements for the symbiotic binary CH Cyg. The current radial velocities, added to a previously published 13 year time series of infrared velocities for the M giant in the CH Cyg symbiotic system, more than double the length of the time series to 29 years. The two previously identified velocity periods are confirmed. The long period, revised to 15.6 +/- 0.1 yr, is shown to result from a binary orbit with a 0.7 solar mass white dwarf and 2 solar mass M giant. Mass transfer to the white dwarf is responsible for the symbiotic classification. CH Cyg is the longest period S-type symbiotic known. Similarities with the longer period D-type systems are noted. The 2.1 year period is shown to be on Wood's sequence D, which contains stars identified as having long secondary periods (LSP). The cause of the LSP variation in CH Cyg and other stars is unknown. From our review of possible causes, we identify g-mode non-radial pulsation as the leading mechanism for LSP variation in CH Cyg. If g-mode pulsation is the cause of the LSPs a radiative region is required near the photosphere of pulsating AGB stars., Comment: 39 pages, 7 Postscript figures

The hot star HDE 326823 is a candidate transition-phase object that is evolving into a nitrogen-enriched Wolf-Rayet star. It is also a known low-amplitude, photometric variable with a 6.123 d period. We present new, high and moderate resolution spectroscopy of HDE 326823, and we show that the absorption lines show coherent Doppler shifts with this period while the emission lines display little or no velocity variation. We interpret the absorption line shifts as the orbital motion of the apparently brighter star in a close, interacting binary. We argue that this star is losing mass to a mass gainer star hidden in a thick accretion torus and to a circumbinary disk that is the source of the emission lines. We present a comprehensive spectral analysis of the high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsar Centaurus X-3 with the Suzaku observatory covering nearly one orbital period. The light curve shows the presence of extended dips which are rarely seen in HMXBs. These dips are seen up to as high as ~40 keV. The pulsar spectra during the eclipse, out-of-eclipse, and dips are found to be well described by a partial covering power-law model with high energy cut-off and three Gaussian functions for 6.4 keV, 6.7 keV, and 6.97 keV iron emission lines. The dips in the light curve can be explained by the presence of an additional absorption component with high column density and covering fraction, the values of which are not significant during the rest of the orbital phases. The iron line parameters during the dips and eclipse are significantly different compared to those during the rest of the observation. During the dips, the iron line intensities are found to be lesser by a factor of 2--3 with significant increase in the line equivalent widths. However, the continuum flux at the corresponding orbital phase is estimated to be lesser by more than an order of magnitude. Similarities in the changes in the iron line flux and equivalent widths during the dips and eclipse segments suggests the dipping activity in Cen X-3 is caused by obscuration of the neutron star by dense matter, probably structures in the outer region of the accretion disk, as in case of dipping low mass X-ray binaries., Comment: 10 Pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We report extensive radial-velocity measurements of the two giant components of the detached, 104-day period binary system of Capella. Our highly accurate three-dimensional orbital solution based on all existing spectroscopic and astrometric observations including our own yields much improved masses of 2.466 +/- 0.018 M_Sun and 2.443 +/- 0.013 M_Sun for the primary and secondary (relative errors of 0.7% and 0.5%). Improved values are derived also for the radii (11.87 +/- 0.56 R_Sun and 8.75 +/- 0.32 R_Sun), effective temperatures (4920 +/- 70 K and 5680 +/- 70 K), and luminosities (79.5 +/- 4.8 L_Sun and 72.1 +/- 3.6 L_Sun). The distance is determined to be 13.042 +/- 0.028 pc. Capella is unique among evolved stars in that, in addition to all of the above, the chemical composition is known, including the overall metallicity [m/H], the carbon isotope ratio 12C/13C for the primary, and the lithium abundance and C/N ratios for both components. The latter three quantities are sensitive diagnostics of evolution, and change drastically for giants as a result of the deepening of the convective envelope during the first dredge-up. The secondary is crossing the Hertzprung gap, while the primary is believed to be in the longer-lived core-helium burning phase. However, we find that current stellar evolution models are unable to match all of the observations for both components at the same time, and at a single age, for any evolutionary state of the primary. Similar problems are found when testing the rotational synchronization, spin axis alignment, and orbital circularization of the system against tidal theory. We describe a strategy for scheduling astrometric observations to minimize the number required to determine the mutual orbits of binary transneptunian systems. The method is illustrated by application to Hubble Space Telescope observations of (42355) Typhon-Echidna, revealing that Typhon and Echidna orbit one another with a period of 18.971 +/- 0.006 days and a semimajor axis of 1628 +/- 29 km, implying a system mass of (9.49 +/- 0.52) x 10^17 kg. The eccentricity of the orbit is 0.526 +/- 0.015. Combined with a radiometric size determined from Spitzer Space Telescope data and the assumption that Typhon and Echidna both have the same albedo, we estimate that their radii are 76 +14/-16 and 42 +8/-9 km, respectively. These numbers give an average bulk density of only 0.44 +0.44/-0.17 g cm^-3, consistent with very low bulk densities recently reported for two other small transneptunian binaries.

We present a simplified solution to orbit determination of a binary system from astrometric observations. An exact solution was found by Asada, Akasaka and Kasai by assuming no observational errors. We extend the solution considering observational data. The bright K1 III-IV star gamma Cep has been reported previously to have a companion in a 2.5-yr orbit that is possibly substellar, and also has a stellar companion at a larger separation that has never been seen. Here we determine for the first time the three-dimensional orbit of the stellar companion accounting also for the perturbation from the closer object. We combine new and existing radial velocity measurements (of both classical precision and high precision) with intermediate astrometric data from the Hipparcos mission (abscissa residuals) as well as ground-based positional observations going back more than a century. The orbit of the secondary star is eccentric and has a period of 66.8 yr. We establish the primary star to be on the first ascent of the giant branch, and to have a mass of 1.18 M_Sun, an effective temperature of 4800 K, and an age around 6.6 Gyr (for an assumed metallicity [Fe/H] = +0.01). The unseen secondary star is found to be an M4 dwarf with a mass of 0.362 M_Sun, and is expected to be about 6.4 mag fainter than the primary in K. The minimum mass of the putative planetary companion is M_p sin i = 1.43 M_Jup. Taking advantage again of the high-precision Hipparcos observations we are able to place a dynamical upper limit on this mass of 13.3 M_Jup (95% confidence level) and 16.9 M_Jup (99.73%, or 3 sigma) thus confirming that it is indeed substellar in nature. We report on the discovery of PSR J1141-6545, a radio pulsar in an eccentric, relativistic 5-hr binary orbit. The pulsar shows no evidence for being recycled, having pulse period P = 394 ms, characteristic age tau_c = 1.4 x 10^6 yr, and inferred surface magnetic dipole field strength B = 1.3 x 10^12 G. From the mass function and measured rate of periastron advance, we determine the total mass in the system to be (2.300 +/- 0.012) solar masses, assuming that the periastron advance is purely relativistic. Under the same assumption, we constrain the pulsar's mass to be M_p < 1.348 solar masses and the companion's mass to be M_c > 0.968 solar masses (both 99% confidence). Given the total system mass and the distribution of measured neutron star masses, the companion is probably a massive white dwarf which formed prior to the birth of the pulsar. We analyze the stability of relativistic, quasi-equilibrium binary neutron stars in synchronous circular orbit. We explore stability against radial collapse to black holes prior to merger, and against orbital plunge. We apply theorems based on turning points along uniformly rotating sequences of constant angular momentum and rest mass to locate the onset of secular instabilities. We find that inspiraling binary neutron stars are stable against radial collapse to black holes all the way down to the innermost stable circular orbit., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX

The extremely massive (> 90 Stellar Mass) and luminous (= 5 x 10(exp 6) Stellar Luminosity) star Eta Carinae, with its spectacular bipolar "Homunculus" nebula, comprises one of the most remarkable and intensely observed stellar systems in the Galaxy. However, many of its underlying physical parameters remain unknown. Multiwavelength variations observed to occur every 5.54 years are interpreted as being due to the collision of a massive wind from the primary star with the fast, less dense wind of a hot companion star in a highly elliptical (e approx. 0.9) orbit. Using three-dimensional (3-D) Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of the binary wind-wind collision, together with radiative transfer codes, we compute synthetic spectral images of [Fe III] emission line structures and compare them to existing Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) observations. We are thus able, for the first time, to tightly constrain the absolute orientation of the binary orbit on the sky. An orbit with an inclination of approx. 40deg, an argument of periapsis omega approx. 255deg, and a projected orbital axis with a position angle of approx. 312deg east of north provides the best fit to the observations, implying that the orbital axis is closely aligned in 3-D space with the Homunculus symmetry axis, and that the companion star orbits clockwise on the sky relative to the primary.
