Demand for n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) exceeds supply. Large-scale studies on effects of season and geography of n-3 PUFAs in marine fish from the Northeast Atlantic Ocean (NEAO) may be used to optimize utilization and improve nutrition security. Using a sinusoid model, seasonal cycles of n-3 PUFAs were determined and found to be species-specific and clearly pronounced for the pelagic zooplankton feeding species. The Greenland halibut showed very little seasonal variation. The n-3 PUFA content in North Sea autumn-spawning (NSAS) herring peaked in summer, while Norwegian spring-spawning (NSS) herring and mackerel had their peak in autumn. A time shift of peaks in n-3 PUFAs between the two herring stocks was detected, likely due to different spawning strategies in addition to a delay of n-3 PUFAs flux in the northern regions of the NEAO. This study demonstrates that consideration of nutrient contents, such as n-3 PUFAs, when organizing and structuring fishery approaches may improve overall nutritional yield. Based on total annual Norwegian fish landings and seasonal variation in n-3 PUFA contents, n-3 PUFAs yield could theoretically be increased from 13.79 kilo ton per year from the current fishing tactics, to 15.54 if the pelagic species were only caught during the time of their seasonal n-3 PUFA peaks. Pelagic fish is a good source for dietary n-3 PUFAs, but harvest timing will also influence n-3 PUFAs intake by human consumers. One portion of fatty fish harvested during winter/spring may not meet the weekly intake reference nutritional guidelines for n-3 PUFAs. Marine n-3 PUFAs yields also varied geographically and decreased southwards, with the lowest values in Skagerrak. Imaging technologies are being deployed on cabled observatory networks worldwide. They allow for the monitoring of the biological activity of deep-sea organisms on temporal scales that were never attained before. In this paper, we customized Convolutional Neural Network image processing to track behavioral activities in an iconic conservation deep-sea species-the bubblegum coral Paragorgia arborea -in response to ambient oceanographic conditions at the Lofoten-Vesterålen observatory. Images and concomitant oceanographic data were taken hourly from February to June 2018. We considered coral activity in terms of bloated, semi-bloated and non-bloated surfaces, as proxy for polyp filtering, retraction and transient activity, respectively. A test accuracy of 90.47% was obtained. Chronobiology-oriented statistics and advanced Artificial Neural Network (ANN) multivariate regression modeling proved that a daily coral filtering rhythm occurs within one major dusk phase, being independent from tides. Polyp activity, in particular extrusion, increased from March to June, and was able to cope with an increase in chlorophyll concentration, indicating the existence of seasonality. Our study shows that it is possible to establish a model for the development of automated pipelines that are able to extract biological information from times series of images. These are helpful to obtain multidisciplinary information from cabled observatory infrastructures.

This paper presents the technological developments and the policy contexts for the project "Autonomous Robotic Sea-Floor Infrastructure for Bentho-Pelagic Monitoring" (ARIM). The development is based on the national experience with robotic component technologies that are combined and merged into a new product for autonomous and integrated ecological deep-sea monitoring. Traditional monitoring is often vessel-based and thus resource demanding. It is economically unviable to fulfill the current policy for ecosystem monitoring with traditional approaches. Thus, this project developed platforms for bentho-pelagic monitoring using an arrangement of crawler and stationary platforms at the Lofoten-Vesterålen (LoVe) observatory network (Norway). Visual and acoustic imaging along with standard oceanographic sensors have been combined to support advanced and continuous spatial-temporal monitoring near cold water coral mounds. Just as important is the automatic processing techniques under development that have been implemented to allow species (or categories of species) quantification (i.e., tracking and classification). At the same time, real-time outboard processed three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning has been implemented to increase mission autonomy capability, delivering quantifiable information on habitat features (i.e., for seascape approaches). The first version of platform autonomy has already been tested under controlled conditions with a tethered crawler exploring the vicinity of a cabled stationary instrumented garage. Our vision is that elimination of the tether in combination with inductive battery recharge trough fuel cell technology will facilitate self-sustained long-term autonomous operations over large areas, serving not only the needs of science, but also sub-sea industries like subsea oil and gas, and mining.

The HYCOM-NORWECOM modeling system is used both for basic research and as a part of the forecasting system for the Arctic Marine Forecasting Centre through the MyOcean project. Here we present a revised version of this model. The present model, as well as the sensitivity simulations leading up to this version, has been compared to a dataset of in-situ measurements of nutrient and chlorophyll from the Norwegian Sea and the Atlantic sector of the Arctic Ocean. The revisions having most impact included adding diatoms to the diet of micro-zooplankton, increasing micro-zooplankton grazing rate and decreased silicate-to-nitrate ratio in diatoms. Model runs are performed both with a coarse- (~ 50km) and higher-resolution (~ 15 km) model configuration, both covering the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. While the new model formulation improves the results in both the coarse- and high-resolution model, the nutrient bias is smaller in the high-resolution model, probably as a result of the better resolution of the main processes and with that improved circulation. The final revised version delivers satisfactory results for all three nutrients as well as improved result for chlorophyll in terms of the annual cycle amplitude. However, for chlorophyll the correlation with in-situ data remains relatively low. Besides the large uncertainties associated with observational data this is possibly caused by the fact that constant C/N and Chl/N ratios are implemented in the model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the concept, the technical implementation and the practical application of a miniaturized sensor system integrated into an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) for real-time acquisition of water quality parameters. The main application field of the presented system is the analysis of the discharge of nitrates into Norwegian fjords near aqua farms. The presented system was developed within the research project SALMON (Sea Water Quality Monitoring and Management) over a three-year period. The development of the sensor system for water quality parameters represented a significant challenge for the research group, as it was to be integrated in the payload unit of the autonomous underwater vehicle in compliance with the underwater environmental conditions. The German company -4H- JENA engineering GmbH (4HJE), with experience in optical in situ-detection of nutrients, designed and built the measurement system. As a carrier platform, the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) "CWolf" from Fraunhofer-Institut für Optronik, Systemtechnik und Bildauswertung - Institutsteil Angewandte Systemtechnik (IOSB-AST) modified to an AUV was deployed. The concept presented illustrates how the measurement system can be integrated easily into the vehicle with a minimum of hard- and software technical interfaces.

Objective: Nasal-valve dilation reduces nasal resistance and increases air flow. It is possible that this mechanism prevents hypopharyngeal collapse and sleep apneas. We investigated the effect of a plastic device (Nozovent; Prevancure AB; Västra Frölunda, Sweden)-which dilates the nasal valve-on patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).Design: Prospective interventional study.Subjects: Twenty-six consecutive patients with OSA were included (22 men; mean +/- SD age, 54.8+/-11.3 years; respiratory disturbance index [RDI], 34.4+/-18.5 events/h; body mass index, 31.6+/-5.7 kg/m(2)).Intervention: The nasal dilator was inserted during sleep into the nares and fitted to exert a dilating force on the nasal valves by means of its elasticity.Measurements: Polysomnographic studies were performed before and after 1 month of treatment. A responder is defined as one with a reduction in RDI to < 50% of the baseline value and RDI of < or =10 events/h during treatment.Results: Five patients dropped out. As a result, only 21 patients were analyzed. Four patients responded, and 17 patients were nonresponders. In the whole population, neither the mean values for respiration during sleep nor sleep staging changed significantly with the device.Conclusions: The investigated nasal dilator had no effect on sleep-related breathing disorders in patients with moderate to severe OSA. Knowledge on species composition is the first step necessary for the proper conservation and management of biological resources and ecologically relevant species. High species diversity and a lack of diagnostic characters for some groups can impose difficulties for taxonomic identification through traditional methodologies, and ichthyoplankton (fish larvae and eggs) are a good example of such a scenario. With more than 35.000 valid species of fishes worldwide and overall similar anatomies in early developmental stages in closely related groups, fish larvae are often hard to be identified at the species or even more encompassing taxonomic levels. To overcome this situation, molecular techniques have been applied, with different markers tested over the years. Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) is the most commonly used marker and now has the broadest public reference libraries, providing consistent results for species identification in different metazoan studies. Here we sequenced the mitochondrial COI-5P fragment of 89 fish larvae collected in the Campos Basin, coastal southeastern Brazil, and compared these sequences with references deposited in public databases to obtain taxonomic identifications. Most specimens identified are species of the Blenniiformes, with Parablennius and Labrisomus the most frequently identified genera. Parablennius included two species (P. marmoreus and P. pilicornis), while Labrisomus included three species (L. cricota, L. conditus and L. nuchipinnis). Anatomy of these molecularly identified specimens were then analyzed with the intention of finding anatomical characters that might be diagnostically informative amongst the early development stage (pre-flexion) larvae. Ventral pigmentation patterns are proposed as useful markers to identify Labrisomus species. However, additional specimens are needed to confirm if the character holds stability through the geographic distribution of the species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the conventional dual-loop vector control strategy of Voltage Source Converter-based High Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) systems employed in offshore wind farms, challenges such as complex PI parameter-tuning and slow response speed exist. Furthermore, a single-phase bridge-arm fault in the converter station can lead to a change in system parameters, resulting in the failure of the original control strategy. Hence, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control strategy for grid-connected offshore wind farms, based on model predictive control (MPC). Firstly, the predictive models for both normal and fault-tolerant states of the grid-side converter station are established based on the system structure of the grid-side converter station and a super-local model. Subsequently, a cost function is constructed using the power error, with the optimization objective set as the value function. This approach allows for accurate prediction of the future switching states of the grid-tied inverter to track the reference power. Finally, a simulation model of the offshore wind power grid system is established in the MATLAB/Simulink (2022a) environment. The results demonstrate that the grid-side converter station can effectively operate in a fault-tolerant manner under the proposed control strategy, thereby enhancing the disturbance resistance and fault-recovery capabilities of the offshore wind VSC-HVDC system. Deep-sea coral assemblages are marine biodiversity hot spots. Because of their life history traits, deep-sea corals are highly vulnerable to the impacts of human activities such as fishing. The critically endangered "bamboo coral" Isidella elongata is a key structuring species of deep muddy bottoms that is susceptible to habitat destruction, particularly from trawling. A shallow population of this species was recently discovered by a multibeam and ROV survey offshore of the Asinara Island marine protected area (MPA) (northwestern Sardinia, NW Mediterranean Sea). This vulnerable marine assemblage has been found under healthy conditions at depths ranging from 110 to 298 m. Isidella elongata occurs on a muddy seafloor locally characterised by boulders associated with black coral species (Parantipathes larix and Antipathes dichotoma). The lush colonies of I. elongata seem to be related to natural protection from bottom trawling activity; nevertheless, the presence of lost fishing artisanal nets has been observed in the study area. These structuring species are indicators of vulnerable marine ecosystems, and their conservation is essential for preserving marine biodiversity. Therefore, enlarging the perimeter of the Asinara Island MPA into its deeper western waters is suggested to ensure the protection of these valuable and vulnerable marine ecosystems. In recent decades, the Arctic Ocean has undergone changes associated with enhanced poleward inflow of Atlantic and Pacific waters and increased heat flux exchange with the atmosphere in seasonally ice-free regions. The associated changes in upper-ocean heat content can alter the exchange of energy at the ocean–ice interface. Yet, the role of ocean heat content in modulating Arctic sea ice variability at sub-seasonal timescales is still poorly documented. We analyze ocean heat transports and surface heat fluxes between 1980–2021 using two eddy-permitting global ocean reanalyses, C-GLORSv5 and ORAS5, to assess the surface energy budget of the Arctic Ocean and its regional seas. We then assess the role of upper-ocean heat content, computed in the surface mixed layer (Qml) and in the 0–300 m layer (Q300), as a sub-seasonal precursor of sea ice variability by means of lag correlations. Our results reveal that in the Pacific Arctic regions, sea ice variability in autumn is linked with Qml anomalies leading by 1 to 3 months, and this relationship has strengthened in the Laptev and East Siberian seas during 2001–2021 relative to 1980–2000, primarily due to reduced surface heat loss since the mid-2000s. Q300 anomalies act as a precursor for wintertime sea ice variability in the Barents and Kara seas, with considerable strengthening and expansion of this link from 1980–2000 and 2001–2021 in both reanalyses. Our results highlight the role played by upper-ocean heat content in modulating the interannual variability of Arctic sea ice at sub-seasonal timescales. Heat stored in the ocean has important implications for the predictability of sea ice, calling for improvements in forecast initialization and a focus upon regional predictions in the Arctic region. Background: Inhalation of l-menthol inhibits cough and has been shown to reduce respiratory discomfort associated with loaded breathing. We investigated the effect of the inhalation of a 1% l-menthol solution in the premedication of fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FB) on the frequency of cough and the irritability of the tracheobronchial mucosa during FB in a blinded, randomized and placebo controlled study., Methods: 64 pat. (30-78 yrs, 55 males) underwent routine FB. Premediction: atropine and hydrocodone s.c., inhalation of oxybuprocain by means of a jet nebulizer, sedation on demand. Verum-group: inhalation of 3 ml 1% l-menthol-solution. Placebo-group: 3 ml 0.05% l-menthol (to provide the typical smell). Before and after inhalation peak respiratory flow (PEF) was registered, during FB the frequency of cough was measured. The bronchoscopist scored the irritability of the tracheobronchial mucosa using a visual analog scale. The patients answered a questionnaire addressing their perception of dyspnea and cough on the day after FB compared to the day before., Results: The cough counts didn't show a significant difference between the groups. The irritability of the mucosa was increased in the verum group (main bronchus verum 62.2 +/- 22, placebo 48.6 +/- 23 [mm vissual analog scale, p = 0.03]). Cough and dyspnea reported by the patients decreased on the day after FB significantly compared to the day before (no difference between the groups). The inhalation of 1% l-menthol induced a significant increase of the PEF (verum 307 +/- 103 pre, 329 +/- 84 post [l/min, p = 0.003]) compared to placebo., Conclusions: The inhalation of 1% l-menthol did not enhance the tolerability of the FB. However, l-menthol induced a significant increase of the PEF immediately after inhalation. Finally sensation of dyspnea was decreased in both groups at the day post FB.

Elucidating the effects of domesticated organisms escaping into the natural environment represents a topic of importance in both evolutionary and conservation biology. However, when excluding the abundant data on salmonids, there is a lack of knowledge on this topic for marine fish aquaculture, which continues to expand globally. In order to bridge this empirical gap, we investigated a suspected escape of sexually mature domesticated Atlantic cod from a commercial marine fish farm in northern Norway. This involved genotyping samples of fish from cages on the farm, putatively identified escapees and wild cod captured in the region and samples of recently spawned eggs collected in the sea. Genetic analyses confirmed a farmed ancestry of the suspected escapees, and significantly, 27% of the sampled cod eggs. Furthermore, statistical analyses revealed a strong reduction in genetic variation in all samples of the farmed cod, including low effective population size and high degree of siblingship. These results thus document the escape of sexually mature adult cod and the release of fertilized domesticated cod eggs into the natural environment. Although it is possible that some of the mature escapees spawned post‐escape, the fact that only a single egg of potential hybrid farmed × wild origin was identified, together with the high number of mature cod in the farm, points to within cage spawning as the primary source of these eggs. This suggestion is supported by oceanic particle‐drift modelling, verifying that transport of eggs between the farm and the egg sampling locations was plausible. This study represents a rare documentation of interaction between domesticated and wild populations for a marine fish, pointing towards potential impacts on the local wild population. Climate change and harvesting result in temporal and spatial changes and variability in spawning, and thus in offspring ambient drift conditions. As a result, variable survival of offspring and thereby in recruitment are expected. This is especially true for species with long reproduction migration as is the case for some Atlantic cod stocks. We utilize biophysical model simulations to analyze survival from spawning until age 1 resulting from different scenarios of spatial and temporal changes in spawning. We find that survival is 1.5–2 times higher when spawning is shifted southwards as compared to northerly shifts. In general, survival is more sensitive to shifts in spawning location than in spawning time. Early spawning is only favourable if spawning is concurrently shifted farther north. A future spawning scenario with a northward shift in spawning grounds beyond what has been observed historically suggests reduced offspring survival and increased sensitivity to the timing of spawning. Zooplankton in the Barents Sea has been monitored by the Institute of Marine Research in Norway on autumn cruises since 1986, using a standardized procedure with determination of dry weight biomass in three size fractions following splitting of the sample in two halves. Along with summer data for the early 1980s, we can now describe changes of zooplankton biomass over four decades. The biomass of the central Barents Sea has fluctuated inversely with collapses and recoveries of the Barents Sea capelin stock, which is a major planktivore. Zooplankton biomass in the central Barents Sea was low in 1983 and 1984, driven by low abundance of Calanus finmarchicus , followed by a pronounced peak in 1987 associated with a "first" collapse of the capelin stock. Biomass showed another pronounced peak in 1994, driven by the small size fraction and interpreted to reflect an advective signal from the adjacent Norwegian Sea. In the two most recent decades, there have been divergent trends, with a relatively high biomass in the inflowing Atlantic water, reflecting a second summer generation of C. finmarchicus , and decreased biomass in the central area, reflecting a lower abundance of Calanus glacialis driven by a combined effect of capelin predation and climate. A dataset of 85 Lagrangian surface drifter trajectories covering the central North Sea area and the Skagerrak from 2017–2021 of 17 deployments is presented. The data have been quality-controlled, uniformly structured, and assimilated in a standard NetCDF format (10.1594/PANGAEA.963166, Meyerjürgens et al., 2023a). Using appropriate methods presented in detail here, surface currents were calculated from the drifter position data. Based on a drifter deployment in the Skagerrak, it is demonstrated that the Lagrangian measurements can be converted into an Eulerian representation by calculating mean current velocities. Tidal energy spectra were analyzed separately for the southern and northern areas of the North Sea, and tidal ellipses were calculated to determine the tidal impact on surface currents. Significant differences between the shallow shelf and the deeper areas of the North Sea are evident. While the shallow nearshore areas are dominated by tidal currents, deeper areas such as the Skagerrak record a high mean residual circulation driven by high-density gradients. Measurements using Eulerian approaches and remote sensing methods are restricted in temporal and spatial coverage, in particular, to capture fine-scale dynamics. For this reason, Lagrangian measurements, to a large extent, provide new insights into the complex submesoscale dynamics of the North Sea. Exemplarily, the Skagerrak region is used to demonstrate that high-resolution drifter observations capture both mesoscale and small-scale current patterns. This unique dataset, covering the entire southeastern North Sea and the Skagerrak, offers further analysis possibilities and can be used for the investigation of various hydrodynamic and environmental issues, e.g., the analysis of submesoscale current dynamics at ocean fronts, the determination of the kinetic eddy energy, and the propagation of pollutants in the North Sea. This work presents the steps followed in the design and implementation of a marine observatory that provides the current state and forecast of oceanic conditions relevant to the aquaculture sector. Examples of successful implementation of these guidelines are presented in the framework of the EuroSea project (H2020 grant agreement No. 862626) for two aquaculture sites: Deenish Island in Ireland and El Campello in Spain. In-situ essential ocean measurements, remote-sensing observations and modelled forecasts are jointly provided to the aquaculture end users. The process begins with stakeholder interaction to understand their main needs and concerns, followed by software architecture design and development to facilitate data acquisition, post-processing and visualization on an open-access web platform. User input regarding the development of the observatory and web platform content and frequent feedback are of paramount importance during the whole process to ensure that the services offered match the needs of the aquaculture sector.
