Objective: This paper examines the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) using a multivariate multilevel approach and investigates the links between individual and school-related correlates with children's BMI and CRF., Methods: This cross-sectional sample included 1014 children (6-10 years) from 25 Portuguese primary schools. BMI was calculated, and CRF was assessed with the PACER test. Fundamental movement skills (FMS) included five object control tasks. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sleep, and sedentary time were assessed with the ActiGraph wGT3X-BT accelerometer. Socioeconomic status (SES) and school variables were also obtained. A multivariate multilevel model was used, and alpha was set at 5%., Results: BMI and CRF systematically increased with age. Most of the joint variance (94.4%) was explained at the child level, and BMI and CRF were correlated at this level (ρ = -.37). More active children demonstrated higher CRF levels and had lower BMI levels; sedentary and sleep time were not significantly associated with BMI or CRF. FMS were positively associated with CRF but were not significantly associated with BMI. Children at higher SES were more fit and had lower BMI than their peers of lower SES. Finally, school-level variables were not significantly related to BMI and CRF., Conclusion: BMI and CRF had a low but statistically significant negative correlation in this sample of children. Objective: The aim was to (1) estimate the relationship between physical fitness (PF) and object control fundamental movement skills (FMS), (2) identify child characteristics that relate with PF and FMS, and (3) examine associations between the school environment, PF, and FMS., Methods: The sample included 1014 Portuguese children aged 6-10 years from the REACT project. PF was assessed via running speed, shuttle run, standing long jump, handgrip, and the PACER test. Object control FMS were assessed with stationary dribble, kick, catch, overhand throw, and underhand roll. Test performances were transformed into z-scores, and their sum was expressed as overall PF and FMS. Child-level variables included body mass index (BMI) z-scores, accelerometer-measured sedentary time and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and socioeconomic status (SES). School size, physical education classes, practice areas, and equipment were also assessed., Results: Approximately, 90% of the variance in object control PF and FMS was at the child level, and 10% at the school level. The correlation between PF and object control FMS was .62, which declined to .43 with the inclusion of covariates. Older, more active, and higher SES children had higher object control PF and FMS, and boys outperformed girls. BMI was negatively associated with PF but not with object control FMS. Sedentary time and number of physical education classes were not significant predictors. Most school predictors did not jointly associate with PF and object control FMS., Conclusion: PF and object control FMS z-scores were moderately related. Not all child characteristics were associated with both PF and object control FMS, and their effect sizes were different. This longitudinal study aimed to analyze the evolution of patterns of daily activities (physical activity time, screen usage time, and sleep hours) in European youth during school closure due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Participants were 624 caregivers of children and adolescents aged 3-18 from Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Evaluations were online, and four time-points were considered: retrospective measurement of daily activities before confinement (T1), and two (T2), five (T3), and eight (T4) weeks after starting the lockdown. Generally accepted international guidelines on physical activity time, screen usage time, and hours of sleep by age group were used to determine whether the pattern might increase the risk for ill health or not. To estimate the evolution of daily activities, generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used. The percentage of children who practiced less than 60 min of daily exercise increased significantly from before home confinement (47.8%) to T2 (86.4%); it slightly decreased at T3 (79.8%), and remained stable at T4 (76.1%). The percentage of children who made excessive use of screens (according to their age group) significantly increased from T1 to T2 and remained stable and high in the rest of the evaluations. The percentage of children who slept fewer or more hours than recommended for their age group remained stable between T1 and T4, although there was a significant increase at T3. In general, results found unhealthier behaviors as confinement was extended. Results are discussed in order to find strategies for promoting healthy daily activities for future pandemics., (© 2024. The article reports on the history of organized crime in West Texas during the 1950s, focusing on how the issue came to the attention of the American public during that time as well as on how organized crime affected Texas specifically. The primary crime discussed is local bootlegging, which spanned across various counties. Government policy surrounding organized crime is discussed, including the creation of the Special Crime Investigating Committee by the 52nd Legislature of the State of Texas' House Simple Resolution 115 in 1951.

Background: Healthcare workers often encounter inadequate sleep conditions. However, limited research has examined the underlying sleep patterns among healthcare workers. This study aimed to identify sleep patterns in healthcare workers, explore predictors associated with various sleep patterns, and investigate the relationship between sleep patterns and psychiatric symptoms. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Shenzhen, China, from April 2023 to June 2023. In total, data from 1,292 participants were included using a convenience sampling method. A latent profile analysis was conducted to identify sleep patterns based on the seven dimensions of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the influence of socio-demographic variables on each profile. A one-way ANOVA test was employed to examine the relationships between sleep patterns and psychiatric symptoms. Results: Three distinct profiles were identified: good sleepers (63.9%), inefficient sleepers (30.3%), and poor sleepers (5.7%). Multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that gender and marital status were predictors of various sleep patterns. The ANOVA revealed significant differences in psychiatric symptoms scores among the three sleep patterns; poor sleepers exhibited the highest levels of mental distress. Conclusion: This study identified three distinct sleep patterns in healthcare workers and their significant associations with psychiatric symptoms. This study examined the relationship between the accuracy of parental reporting of children's sleep duration compared to objectively measured child sleep and tested whether any discrepancies were related to childhood obesity prevalence in a sample of Latinx families (N = 119). A paired sample t-test revealed that parents significantly overestimated their child's sleep duration by 1.33 hours, t (86) = 6.69, p <.001. Using a one-way ANOVA, no significant differences were found in children's BMI percentile when grouped by the parent's accuracy of their child's sleep duration F (3, 83) =.76, p =.52. A potential, although non-significant, trend regarding parent accuracy and child BMI may merit further examination. Future research should seek to determine if the discrepancy in parent reported child sleep duration is indeed linked with increased child BMI and if this knowledge could be used in targeted intervention efforts to reduce childhood obesity. Child and family routines were significantly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic stay-at-home orders, leaving individuals isolated from school, work, and peer networks. This work examines how social support from family/friends and systems was connected to associations between parental stress and child behavior problems. Data was collected between January and March of 2021 from 195 parents of children in elementary school who were primarily in remote learning due to the pandemic. Hierarchical linear regression models indicated that younger child age and child gender were associated with parental stress in step 1; only child age remained significant when child behavior problems were added. Support from family, but not external systems, attenuated associations between child characteristics and behavior on parental stress, though child behavior problems remained consistent with parental stress even when support was present. The purpose of this study was to examine comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP) policies and practices in international schools in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. Following an explanatory-sequential mixed-methods research design, the researchers employed the Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program Policies and Practices Questionnaire (CSPAP-Q) and follow-up interviews to describe CSPAP implementation and explore implementation enablers and challenges. A convenience sample of physical education teachers (N=18) participated in the questionnaire, and seven of these teachers participated in individual interviews. Teachers’ responses to the questionnaire indicated considerable heterogeneity and numerous gaps in existing school-based physical activity opportunities and promotion efforts. Interviews revealed three themes related to CSPAP implementation: (a) time constraints in secondary schools, (b) facilities, and (c) location. This report presents the results of a small workgroup convened by the American Association of Dental Schools to examine experiences related to postdoctoral general dentistry programs linked with managed care systems and clinical settings. The workgroup was a component of an Association effort to identify and promote innovative and nontraditional methods by which the number of postdoctoral general dentistry (PGD) positions can be increased to meet current demand for PGD education. The participants identified factors and conditions that they believed to be critical to the planning, development, and conduct of PGD programs with substantial linkages with managed care systems and settings. The staff involvement (SI) and family and community engagement (FCE) components of the CSPAP framework constitute the support system for program implementation and sustainability. These components embody the essence of the framework because they focus on the coordination and synergy needed for a successful program, and such attributes are the hallmark of multicomponent approaches to school-based health promotion. But what does it take to galvanize school staff, families, and communities in a collective effort to bolster quality physical education and promote and increase the physical activity (PA) of children and adolescents? In this article, the authors summarize research on SI and FCE, particularly over the past decade. While research on these CSPAP components is still in its emergent stages, we identify key findings to date and suggest strategies for translating research to practice. It is our hope that this article will provide school PA leaders (PALs) and physical education teacher educators with actionable ideas to more fully leverage the CSPAP support system. Mechanically, the brain is characterized by both solid and fluid properties. The resulting unique material behavior fosters proliferation, differentiation, and repair of cellular and vascular networks, and optimally protects them from damaging shear forces. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a noninvasive imaging technique that maps the mechanical properties of the brain in vivo. MRE studies have shown that abnormal processes such as neuronal degeneration, demyelination, inflammation, and vascular leakage lead to tissue softening. In contrast, neuronal proliferation, cellular network formation, and higher vascular pressure result in brain stiffening. In addition, brain viscosity has been reported to change with normal blood perfusion variability and brain maturation as well as disease conditions such as tumor invasion. In this article, the contributions of the neuronal, glial, extracellular, and vascular networks are discussed to the coarse‐grained parameters determined by MRE. This reductionist multi‐network model of brain mechanics helps to explain many MRE observations in terms of microanatomical changes and suggests that cerebral viscoelasticity is a suitable imaging marker for brain disease. Background and Objectives: Urban green spaces have natural ecological value and provide entertainment and many physical and mental benefits for citizens. In the science of ornamental horticulture and green spaces, the aesthetic aspects of plants as well as their role in controlling adverse environmental conditions such as air pollution, strong winds, strong sunlight, snow and rain, and floods are considered. The Ligustrum lucidum plant is considered an excellent landscaping plant in most areas due to its resistance to pests, air pollution and wind. In addition, it grows quickly in poor soils and provides good shade. The hard rooting of this plant and the long rooting process led to the design and implementation of this research. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of indole butyric acid hormone and nutritional elements iron, zinc and boron on the rooting of Ligustrum lucidum cuttings. Materials and Methods: A factorial research was conducted based on a completely randomized design with two factors and three replications. The first factor includes different concentrations of indole butyric acid hormone (0, 50, 100, 150 parts per million) by spraying on leaves and the second factor includes three iron nutrients with concentrations (0, 4, 8, 16 parts per million), zinc with concentration of (0, 0.27, 0.54, 1.08 parts per million) and boron with concentration of (0, 0.13, 0.26, 0.54 parts per million) as irrigated fertilizer. Results: The results showed that the highest rooting percentage and the highest number of buds and leaves were observed in the 50 ppm indole butyric acid treatment. The longest root length was affected by the treatment of indole butyric acid 100 ppm and the highest number of roots was seen in the interaction of indole butyric acid 50 ppm and boron 0.26 ppm and zinc 0.27 ppm. The concentration of 50 and 100 ppm indole butyric acid, zinc 1.08 ppm and the combined effect of indole butyric acid 50 ppm with boron 0.26 ppm also caused a significant decrease in the amount of total phenol. Also, among the treatments, the lowest amount of peroxidase enzyme activity was related to the use of indole butyric acid 50 and 100 ppm along with iron 4 ppm. Also, among the treatments, the lowest amount of peroxidase enzyme activity was related to the use of indole butyric acid 50 and 100 ppm and iron 4 ppm. Conclusion: The results of the present study clearly show that the spraying treatment of indole butyric acid and its combination with some nutritional elements can improve and accelerate the rooting process of Ligustrum lucidum cuttings, and their use in commercial nurseries can be recommended for propagation through stem cuttings. Introduction: Overalll, muscular fitness and academic performance are two variables widely studied in the literature. However, evidence on the relationship between muscular fitness and specific school subjects (e.g., physical education), as well as their differences by sex, is scarce. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the associations between muscular fitness and overall academic performance and between muscular fitness and specific subjects (i.e., language, math, foreign language, and physical education) in a sample of secondary Spanish school students. Methods: For the present study, a sample of 766 students (45% boys, aged 12-17 years). From the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study was used. The Assessing the Levels of Physical Activity and Fitness (ALPHA-FIT) battery was used to determine handgrip strength and lower body muscular strength. The performance of the different school subjects was provided by the school centers. Results: Overall, for both boys and girls, higher muscular fitness was associated with greater academic results, with the greatest differences in physical education. However, only significant differences were identified for girls. Discussion and conclusion: Global muscular fitness is important for contributing to cognitive development, both in physical education and in the rest of the subjects of the educational curriculum for adolescents. The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures to face it have placed children and their caregivers in front of many challenges that could represent sources of stress. This work aims to explore the point of view of children through drawing, as a spontaneous means of expression, relating it to parents' perceptions of children's difficulties, strengths, and mentalization skills. The sample consists of 18 children (mean age = 8.22, SD = 1.79). Parents were asked to complete: a socio-demographic questionnaire with information on the impact of COVID-19 on the family, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the Everyday Mindreading Scale. Children were asked to draw three moments: "Before" the pandemic, "During" the lockdown, and "After," when the COVID-19 will be passed. The drawings were coded by constructing a content and expressive analysis grid, adapting coding systems found in the literature. Data were collected at the beginning of the summer of 2020, just after the first lockdown period (from March to May 2020 in Italy). The results of the present work are in line with previous studies that reported experiences of wellbeing and tranquility of children in time spent at home with family during the pandemic. From the drawings emerges that children feel sufficiently able to master the situation, as reflected by including themselves in drawings and providing many details of the house in "During" drawings. The literature also reports a feeling of sadness/loneliness caused by the lack of friends, an element that we also find in the tendency to represent friends significantly more in the drawings concerning the future. Some contents of drawings (inclusion of friends, relatives, and parents) appeared associated with emotional, interpersonal, and mentalizing abilities of children, as perceived by parents. Exploring children's representations of a stressful event like the pandemic through drawings allows to focus both on their difficulties and on their resources, with useful implications for the educational support. Background Children are one of the most vulnerable groups to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and depend on their parents to supervise and maintain oral hygiene. During this pandemic, disease prevention through education and awareness of the parents is the only way to maintain a child's oral health; therefore, parents must have sufficient knowledge about the ongoing pandemic and its consequences on the oral cavity. This study aims to assess the parental attitudes toward and awareness of oral health of healthy children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology A questionnaire was circulated between May and September 2020 using simple random sampling of the parents of children aged between 6 and 12 years. The questions were close ended and divided into awareness and attitude-based sections so that the parents could choose the appropriate answer. Results and Conclusion In the present study, 50% of the participating parents had the right attitude in challenging times like the pandemic and appropriate knowledge about the same. The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the mental health and developmental trajectories of children and adolescents, catalyzing a range of psychological and behavioral issues due to enforced lockdowns and other restrictions. This text explores these impacts through the lens of developmental psychopathology, which integrates clinical psychology and developmental science to examine the emergence and evolution of psychological disorders across a lifespan. This paper highlights how pandemic-related disruptions have exacerbated conditions such as anxiety and depression and, notably, increased childhood obesity due to changes in lifestyle and reductions in physical activity. The analysis includes a discussion of how isolation has not only restricted access to educational and psychological resources but also increased the risk of parental mental illness and related familial stress, thereby intensifying issues of neglect and their consequent impact on child health. By employing a developmental psychopathology framework, this paper argues for the necessity of targeted interventions that address these complex interplays of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Such interventions aim to support children through structured educational and health-oriented strategies, ensuring their well-being amidst the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic. This approach underscores the importance of early, multifaceted strategies involving parents, educators, and healthcare providers to foster healthier developmental outcomes for children facing unprecedented global health crises. Background: Ensuring the physical fitness of Egyptian children is of paramount importance to their overall well-being, given the unique socio-cultural and educational barriers they face that may hinder their active participation. As part of the DELICIOUS project, the "Be Fit Program" aims to increase the level of physical fitness among Egyptian school-aged children. This study explores the effectiveness of a structured, six-week physical activity (PA) program in improving various facets of physical fitness in children, including body composition, speed, coordination, muscular strength, and cardiovascular endurance. With the increasing prevalence of sedentary lifestyles, such efforts are imperative to improve overall health outcomes. Methods: A cohort of 125 children, aged 8.50 to 12.25 y (mean age 10.19 ± 1.03 y), participated in the study. Their body composition, speed, coordination, strength, and aerobic fitness were assessed before and after the Be Fit Program using the revised International Physical Performance Test Profile. Paired t-tests were used to detect changes between the pre- and post-tests. Results: Following the six-week intervention, statistical analyses revealed significant improvements in coordination and lower body strength (p < 0.01). Aerobic endurance showed marginal improvements, approaching statistical significance (p = 0.06). Conversely, there were no statistically significant changes in body composition, speed, or upper body strength (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The study confirms that tailored, non-competitive physical activities can positively influence specific fitness components in Egyptian children. However, achieving holistic improvements across all targeted fitness domains may require further strategic adjustments or a longer program duration. This pilot study underscores the importance of culturally tailored, school-based PA programs and highlights the continued need for research and program refinement to comprehensively improve children's fitness in the Egyptian context. Background/Objectives: It is believed that outdoor play structures lead to more physical activity for kids during school recess. However, the intensity of this activity remains unknown. This study explored whether access to outdoor play structures during recess interferes with children's physical activity levels. Methods: Forty-one children (8–10 years old) accessed play structures during the afternoon recess but not in the morning for one entire week. To control for temperature differences, the same number of participants from another school who did not access playground structures were invited to participate. Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) was determined using heart rate reserve. Heart rate was recorded using the Fitbit Inspire 2 (San Francisco, CA, USA) for at least three full school days. Wilcoxon signed-rank and Mann–Whitney U tests analyzed within- and between-group differences. Results: The findings show no difference in MVPA when accessing or not accessing outdoor play structures, both within groups [(n = 37) median (25th–75th) 16 min (7–30) vs. 14 min (5–22)] and between groups [(n = 22) 16 min (7–26)]. The weekly MVPA for all participants (n = 59) [172 min (117–282)] was the strongest variable associated with MVPA during recess [t(df) = 5.40 (38), 95% CI 0.04–0.09, p < 0.001]. Conclusion: accessibility to outdoor play structures does not increase MVPA during recess in children aged 8 to 10. Therefore, schools may need various options for children to play during recess, allowing them to accumulate MVPA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
