Abstract

Activation of inflammatory responses regulates the transmission of pain pathways through an integrated network in the peripheral and central nervous systems. The immunopotentiator thymosin alpha-1 (Tα1) has recently been reported to have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective functions in rodents. However, how Tα1 affects inflammatory pain remains unclear. In the present study, intraperitoneal injection of Tα1 attenuated complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA)-induced pain hypersensitivity, and decreased the up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) in inflamed skin and the spinal cord. We found that CFA-induced peripheral inflammation evoked strong microglial activation, but the effect was reversed by Tα1. Notably, Tα1 reversed the CFA-induced up-regulation of vesicular glutamate transporter (VGLUT) and down-regulated the vesicular γ-aminobutyric acid transporter (VGAT) in the spinal cord. Taken together, these results suggest that Tα1 plays a therapeutic role in inflammatory pain and in the modulation of microglia-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine production in addition to mediation of VGLUT and VGAT expression in the spinal cord. Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) metal oxides have been of great interest owning to their particular properties such as rapid electron transfer capability. Herein, we present a novel ultrathin single-crystalline bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) nanosheet wrapped by reduce graphene oxide (rGO), which exhibits rapid electron and Li ion transfer in Li-ion battery anode. The 2D profile of both Bi2O3 and rGO sheets enables them to contact steadily, forming a sandwiched structure, which is beneficial for the transport of electrons and Li ions. The Bi2O3@rGO anodes exhibit a capacity of 218 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a rate of 0.5 C, which exceeds the bare Bi2O3 and some reports about Bi2O3 anodes. In addition, density of states (DOSs) and band gap structures of the Bi2O3 wrapped with rGO have been investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which show that the band gap is improved and the electron transfer is significantly enhanced. 13. New paradigm of in situ characterization for next-generation CO2electroreduction towards multi-carbon products over Cu-based catalysts

Abstract

The electrochemical reduction of CO2(CO2RR) into valuable chemicals and fuels is a promising approach for sustainable energy storage and compromising greenhouse gas emissions, among which the formation of higher-valued multi-carbon products (C2+) is desired. However, selective CO2RR to C2+usually suffers from a low reaction rate and low selectivity for the complex and long pathways. More seriously, the catalytic system involving catalyst, interface and microenvironment changes dynamically at realistic working conditions, which regrettably causes misleading results regarding the promoted factor and reaction mechanism of CO2RR. To this regard, it is necessary to develop the advanced in situ techniques to track the dynamic evolution of the catalytic system under operating conditions. Here, we discuss the necessary factors and key challenges in producing C2+products, including current state-of-the-art copper-based catalyst, as well as the dynamic evolution of the catalyst structure, oxidation state and composition. Then, we present the strategies using advanced in situ and operando characterizations to monitor the deep triggers of dynamic evolution and deeply understand the reaction mechanism. Finally, we highlight how the cross-coupled model and data-driven flow enable the new paradigm of in situ characterization with higher accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract

A recent report from investigators at Sichuan University in Chengdu, People's Republic of China, discusses the development of a biomimetic microneedle patch called HepMi-PCL. Inspired by corals, this patch is designed to indicate and treat infections within wounds. The patch utilizes 3D printing technology and contains a heparin-based hydrogel that can absorb exudate in the wound, indicating whether anti-infection treatment is needed. The patch can release drugs rapidly when a positive chronic infection is identified, and the drug delivery slows down or ceases as the infection is managed.
