With the goal of better understanding stimulation in crystalline rock for improving enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), the EGS Collab Project performed a series of stimulations and flow tests at 1.25 and 1.5 km depths. The tests were performed in two well-instrumented testbeds in the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, United States. The testbed for Experiment 1 at 1.5 km depth contained two open wells for injection and production and six instrumented monitoring wells surrounding the targeted stimulation zone. Four multi-step stimulation tests targeting hydraulic fracturing and nearly year-long ambient temperature and chilled water flow tests were performed in Experiment 1. The testbed for Experiments 2 and 3 was at 1.25 km depth and contained five open wells in an outwardly fanning five-spot pattern and two fans of well-instrumented monitoring wells surrounding the targeted stimulation zone. Experiment 2 targeted shear stimulation, and Experiment 3 targeted low-flow, high-flow, and oscillating pressure stimulation strategies. Hydraulic fracturing was successful in Experiments 1 and 3 in generating a connected system wherein injected water could be collected. However, the resulting flow was distributed dynamically, and not entirely collected at the anticipated production well. Thermal breakthrough was not observed in the production well, but that could have been masked by the Joule-Thomson effect. Shear stimulation in Experiment 2 did not occur – despite attempting to pressurize the fractures most likely to shear – because of the inability to inject water into a mostly-healed fracture, and the low shear-to-normal stress ratio. The EGS Collab experiments are described to provide a background for lessons learned on topics including induced seismicity, the correlation between seismicity and permeability, distributed and dynamic flow systems, thermoelastic and pressure effects, shear stimulation, local geology, thermal breakthrough, monitoring stimulation, grouting boreholes, modeling, and system management.

We conducted a time-lapse seismic experiment utilizing automated active seismic source and sensor arrays to monitor a reactivated fault within the Opalinus clay formation at the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory (Switzerland), an analog caprock for geologic carbon storage. A series of six brine injections were conducted into the so-called Main Fault to reactivate it. Seismic instrumentation in five monitoring boreholes on either side of the fault was used to continuously probe changes in P-wave travel-times associated with fault displacement and leakage. We performed time-lapse travel-time tomography on five hundred sequential data sets; this revealed a zone of decreased P-wave velocity, up to 16 m/s, during each injection cycle, followed by a velocity increase during shut-in. These results demonstrate varying elastic property perturbations, both spatially and temporally, along the fault plane during reactivation. We then interpreted these velocity changes in terms of fault dilation induced by pressurized fluids along the fault.

Este artículo explora los conceptos de “sick tourism” y “withnessing” en dos obras de teatro patográfico —The Year My Vagina Tried to Kill Me (2016), de Amy Vreeke, y Performing Endometriosis (2022), de Verónica Rodríguez— escritas y representadas respectivamente por Vreeke y Rodríguez, ambas mujeres con endometriosis. La endometriosis es una patología en la cual tejido similar al endometrio (la pared interna del útero) aparece en otros lugares del cuerpo. Este tejido funciona como la menstruación (crece, sangra y se desintegra), pero a diferencia de la misma, se queda atrapado dentro. Metodológicamente, se emplean los estudios del teatro y la performance, los estudios de género con una perspectiva feminista interseccional y las humanidades médicas críticas con el fin de abordar la epistemología corporeizada y ecológica propuesta por estas “pathographical performances” (Brodzinski, 2016), es decir, propuestas teatrales que ponen el foco en la experiencia de la enfermedad. Primero, se examina “lo visual” como un aspecto transversal al teatro y la enfermedad y cómo los casos de estudio escogidos se apropian de lo visual en un entorno en el que la enfermedad de las performers no tiene visibilidad y en el que ellas no son vistas. Segundo, conectando esos fenómenos con la idea de espectador/a, se propone un cambio del “sick tourism”, que se refiere a la idea de “visitar” la enfermedad, y en el caso teatral, quizás, ser testigo/a del proceso patológico de la performer, al “withnessing”, que denota un devenir de la organización de los cuerpos en el que la visión no constituye el eje de relación principal. Se concluye que estos dos ejemplos teatrales de “withnessing” subrayan la existencia de un espacio en el que se contribuye al conocimiento de la enfermedad desde los cuerpos y con los cuerpos.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prevalent condition in the pediatric population. An index between the diameter of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and the transverse eyeball transverse diameter (ETD) measured in the tomographic scan has been described in adults, with a cutoff value of ≥0.25 for predicting poor neurologic prognoses. This study was conducted to analyze the relationship between the index ONSD/ETD with the neurological outcome in children with severe TBI. Subjects and Methods: This was single-center, retrospective study, conducted from March 2021 to November 2022. Aspergillus flavus is a medically relevant fungus, particularly in tropical regions. Although its aflatoxin production and thermotolerance are well documented, its biofilm-forming ability has received less attention, despite being a key factor in the virulence of A. flavus as an opportunistic pathogen, which can significantly impact therapeutic outcomes. To investigate the influence of temperature on the growth and biofilm formation of an A. flavus isolate, we compared it on solid media with the reference strain A. flavus ATCC 22546 and documented morphological changes during conidial germination. We examined biofilm formation in both strains across different temperatures and evaluated the susceptibility of this A. flavus isolate to antifungal agents in both planktonic and biofilm form. Our results showed that the temperature can promote conidiation on solid media. Radial growth was highest at 28 °C, while the conidial count and density were favored at higher temperatures. Moreover, we determined that 37 °C was the optimal temperature for conidial germination and biofilm formation. We described four distinct phases in A. flavus biofilm development—initiation (0–12 h), consolidation (12–24 h), maturation (24–48 h), and dispersion (48–72 h)—with the notable presence of conidial heads at 42 °C. Carbohydrates and proteins constitute the primary components of the extracellular matrix. We observed an abundance of lipid droplets within the hyphae of the MMe18 strain biofilm. The mature biofilms demonstrated reduced susceptibility to amphotericin B and itraconazole, requiring higher inhibitory concentrations for both antifungals compared with their planktonic counterparts.

Pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) are serious infections in which doctors often fail in identifying the causative agent due to microbiological limitations. These limitations in detecting uncommon pathogens complicate the treatment and recovery. Molecular techniques, like massive sequencing, enable the detection of uncommon pathogens and highlight the shortcomings of traditional cultures. The aim of this work was to characterise the bacterial composition of PLAs through massive sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene in cases where conventional culture methods were negative. Purulent material was collected from three patients with PLAs at Hospital Juárez de México. Classical and molecular microbiological cultures were performed in parallel. Metagenomic DNA was extracted and massively sequenced (16S rRNA gene) using the Illumina MiSeq platform. A bioinformatic analysis was performed to determine the diversity at six different taxa levels and the relative abundances. The culture methods were not sufficient to detect the causative agent of the PLAs. However, the massive sequencing revealed the causative agents of the monomicrobial and polymicrobial infectious foci, with Gardnerella vaginalis, Lactobacillus iners, and Prevotella timonensis as the dominant bacteria. The massive sequencing revealed the presence of unusual pathogens that traditional culture failed to detect. There is an immediate need for molecular or comprehensive microbiological culture techniques to search for unusual bacteria in the diagnosis of PLAs.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is an emerging sensing technology that records the strain-rate along fiber optic cables at high spatial and temporal resolution. This technique is becoming a popular tool in seismology, hydrology, and other subsurface monitoring applications. However, due to the large coverage (10’s of km) and high density of measurements (1m spacing at 100’s of Hz), a DAS installation could produce terabytes of data records per day. Because many DAS instruments are deployed in remote locations, this large data size poses significant challenges to its transfer and storage. In this paper, we explore lossless compression methods to reduce the storage requirement in both real-time and post-hoc scenarios. We propose a two-stage compression method to improve the compression ratio and compression speed. This two-stage compression method could reduce the storage requirement by 40%, which is 20% more than other lossless methods, such as ZSTD. We demonstrate that the compression method could complete its operation well before the DAS instrument needs to output the next file, making it suitable for real-time DAS acquisition. We also implement a parallel compression method for a post-hoc scenario and demonstrate that our method could effectively utilize a parallel computer. With 256 CPU cores, our parallel compression method achieves the speed of 26GB/second.

Este artículo representa el primer paso para demostrar que la akrasia[1] proporciona la característica estructural subyacente en los juicios de culpabilidad o responsabilidad ética y jurídica por actos negligentes; el trabajo explica el fenómeno de la akrasia y compara las concepciones clásicas y contemporáneas de este fenómeno. Argumentamos que actuamos inadvertidamente porque actuamos acráticamente, lo que se explica en términos de un compromiso defectuoso específico del razonamiento práctico por parte del agente ejecutor, es decir, una falta de integración entre el carácter y el pensamiento que debe entenderse como una falla para habitar la perspectiva deliberativa-aspiracional. [1] El término inglés akrasia, que a su vez deriva del griego ἀκρατία, se refiere al estado mental de quien, por debilidad de su voluntad, actúa en contra de su mejor juicio. ¿Cómo traducir esto al español? Acracia es un término similar, pero según la RAE esta palabra significa “Doctrina que propugna la supresión de toda autoridad”, algo así como anarquismo. En este escrito no se alude a la doctrina de la anarquía, sino al estado de intemperancia del agente moral. Entonces, se usará el término akrasia, con s, aunque no está avalada por la RAE, para dejar en claro el sentido del término (N. del T.).

En Puerto Rico, la especialidad de medicina física y rehabilitación surgió en la década de los años cincuenta y a partir de ese momento ha progresado gracias a la creación de programas de adiestramiento de vanguardia, el establecimiento de una cultura de investigación científica y el desarrollo de la especialidad primaria y desubespecialidades como manejo de dolor, medicina del deporte, rehabilitación pediátrica, medicina neuromuscular, medicina de trauma cerebral y medicina de lesiones medulares. La práctica clínica más común es la de atención a pacientes externos con dolor, lesiones musculoesqueléticas y daños en el sistema nervioso, pero se ha presentado un aumento en los servicios de rehabilitación intensiva de pacientes que requieren hospitalización; en el uso de técnicas intervencionistas para manejo de dolor, lesiones de tejido blando y articulares, así como en el manejo de espasticidad. Actualmente, la especialidad de fisiatría en Puerto Rico enfrenta grandes retos, como lo son el control de las aseguradoras sobre los servicios que se les ofrecen a pacientes con impedimentos físicos y restricciones de participación, el incremento en la cantidad de documentos requeridos para que se aprueben estos servicios y la competencia de otros profesionales de la salud que han incursionado en el campo de rehabilitación. Las oportunidades para la especialidad incluyen el aumento de la población mayor y con discapacidad que requiere servicios de rehabilitación; el desarrollo de las prácticas de subespecialidad, y la necesidad de aumentar la evidencia científica que demuestre la efectividad de los tratamientos que se ofrecen y de apoyar las políticas públicas que aumenten el acceso a servicios de rehabilitación para personas de escasos recursos.

Infections pose a risk for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplants due to their immunosuppression, making them susceptible to opportunistic infections. Therefore, understanding the composition of the aerobiome in this area is vital. The aim of this study was to characterize the aerobiome in an HSC transplant area, evaluating the impact of infrastructure and health personnel operations on air contamination. The environmental parameters and aerobiome of the HSC transplant area at Hospital Juárez de México were quantified over one year. Finally, a double-entry Vester matrix was constructed to classify problems according to their degree of causality. The abundance and taxonomic diversity of the aerobiome were dependent on seasonality, environmental factors, and high-efficiency filtration. Gram-positive bacteria predominated, followed by fungi and Gram-negative bacteria. ANOVA revealed significant differences in the bacterial aerobiome but not in the fungal aerobiome among the transplant rooms. Clinically, fungi such as Aspergillus fumigatus, Alternaria spp., Cladosporium spp., and Penicillium spp. were identified. ESKAPE bacteria typing revealed clonal dispersion. Finally, the Vester matrix highlighted critical problems associated with contamination due to the absence of HEPA filtration and non-adherence in patient management practices. HEPA filtration and positive pressure are essential to improve the air quality and reduce the microbiological load. However, the control areas will depend on patient management and routine activities, such as entry protocols in controlled areas.

Seismic tube waves, produced by flexure of the well boundary, pressure changes in the fluid in the well, and deformation of the material immediately surrounding the well, are particularly sensitive to variations in the state of the well. We evaluate a direct approach for generating and observing tube waves as a means of detecting well damage. While we find that it can be difficult to reliably excite observable tube waves without a very strong surface source, time-frequency techniques can be employed to increase the detectability of tube wave reflections. New technologies, particularly distributed acoustic sensing, hold great promise for evaluating well integrity by monitoring tube waves, temperature changes, and seismic noise due to well deformation and fluid leakage.

It is crucial to ensure the safety and integrity of underground gas storage (UGS) infrastructure for energy reliability in California, and many other places around the world. To address the risk management need in UGS industry, we take advantage of recent advances in downhole fiber optic monitoring and coupled well-reservoir simulation to provide unprecedented understanding of gas flow in wells at UGS sites. We have combined advanced monitoring and simulation of UGS operations into a decision-support system called the Integrated Risk Management and Decision Support System (IRMDSS). The IRMDSS framework includes three components: (i) mechanistic models, (ii) continuous and frequent monitoring data, and (iii) a supervisory interface for performing analyses using the models and monitoring data. The goal of the IRMDSS is to equip UGS operators with real-time monitoring data and simulation tools that can alert them to potential failures, detect early leakage, and support mitigation decision-making to prevent otherwise larger failures. We demonstrate an application of the IRMDSS by analyzing the temperature and pressure response to a hypothetical leak. Through a review of distributed temperature sensing (DTS) data collected at an operating UGS facility we show that DTS can uniquely and precisely identify the depth of the gas-water-contact in the well annulus, and that DTS can provide an early warning signal of upward gas flow as would occur in a well blowout scenario. When combined with modeling analysis, a rough leak rate can be roughly estimated to understand the severity of the leakage conditions and to support the mitigation decision needed.

Abstract Endotoxic shock (ExSh) and cecal ligature and puncture (CLP) are models that induce sepsis. In this work, we investigated early immunologic and histopathologic changes induced by ExSh or CLP models in female and male mice. Remarkable results showed that females supported twice the LD100 of LPS for males, CLP survival and CFU counts were similar between genders, high circulating LPS levels in ExSh mice and low levels of IgM anti-LPS in males. In the serum of ExSh males, TNF and IL-6 increased in the first 6 h, in CLP males at 12 h. In the liver of ExSh mice, TNF increased at 1.5 and 12 h, IL-1 at 6 h. TGFβ1 increased in females throughout the study and at 12 h in males. In CLP mice, IL-6 decreased at 12 h, TGFβ1 increased at 6–12 h in males and at 12 h in females. In the lungs of ExSh males, IL-1β increased at 1.5-6 h and TGFβ1 at 12 h; in females, TNF decrease at 6 h and TGFβ1 increased from 6 h; in CLP females, TNF and IL-1β decreased at 12 h and 1.5 h, respectively, and TGFβ1 increased from 6 h; in males, TGFβ1 increased at 12 h. In the livers of ExSh mice, signs of inflammation were more common in males; in the CLP groups, inflammation was similar but less pronounced. ExSh females had leucocytes with TGFβ1. The lungs of ExSh males showed patches of hyaline membranes and some areas of inflammatory cells, similar but fewer and smaller lesions were seen in male mice with CLP. In ExSh females, injuries were less extent than in males, similar pulmonary lesions were seen in female mice with CLP. ExSh males had lower levels of TGFβ1 than females, and even lower levels were seen in CLP males. We conclude that the ExSh was the most lethal model in males, associated with high levels of free LPS, low IgM anti-LPS, exacerbated inflammation and target organ injury, while females showed early TGFβ1 production in the lungs and less tissue damage. We didn't see any differences between CLP mice.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of high hydrostatic pressures (HHP) (200 MPa for 10 min, 400 MPa for 10 min, and 600 MPa for 5 min) and VAT pasteurization (60 °C for 30 min) on the microbiological, antioxidant and sensory characteristics of fresh juice and a fermented beverage of black cherry (Prunus serotina) stored for 49 days at 4 ± 1 °C. The HHP processing was effective to reduce the microbial load before storage and during the storage of the fermented beverages; however, for the reduction of the microbial load in fresh juice, a minimum pressure of 600 MPa for 5 min was necessary. At day 0, a reduction of 4.10 logarithmic cycles was achieved in samples processed by HHP and VAT pasteurization. The processed samples showed significant changes (p ≤ 0.05) in their color characteristics. All fermented beverages of black cherry had lower quantities of antioxidant activity, total phenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins. The highest antioxidant characteristics were observed in sample of black cherry processed at 600 MPa for 5 min. The black cherry VAT processed samples were the least sensorially accepted. A treatment of 600 MPa for 5 min could be enough to obtain a microbiologically safe fermented black cherry beverage stable for 49 days having similar antioxidant characteristics as those of fresh juice.

Deep Learning approaches for real, large, and complex scientific data sets can be very challenging to design. In this work, we present a complete search for a finely-tuned and efficiently scaled deep learning classifier to identify usable energy from seismic data acquired using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). While using only a subset of labeled images during training, we were able to identify suitable models that can be accurately generalized to unknown signal patterns. Moving loads such as cars and trains are very useful sources of seismic waves, which can be analyzed to retrieve information on the seismic velocity of subsurface materials using the techniques of ambient noise seismology. This information is valuable for a variety of applications such as geotechnical characterization of the near-surface, seismic hazard evaluation, and groundwater monitoring. However, for such processes to converge quickly, data segments with appropriate noise energy should be selected. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a novel sensing technique that enables acquisition of these data at very high spatial and temporal resolution for tens of kilometers. One major challenge when utilizing the DAS technology is the large volume of data that is produced, thereby presenting a significant Big Data challenge to find regions of useful energy. In this work, we present a highly scalable and efficient approach to process real, complex DAS data by integrating physics knowledge acquired during a data exploration phase followed by deep supervised learning to identify "useful" coherent surface waves generated by anthropogenic activity, a class of seismic waves that is abundant on these recordings and is useful for geophysical imaging. Data exploration and training were done on 130~Gigabytes (GB) of DAS measurements. Using parallel computing, we were able to do inference on an additional 170~GB of data (or the equivalent of 10 days' worth of recordings) in less than 30 minutes. 26. Aquifer Monitoring Using Ambient Seismic Noise Recorded With Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) Deployed on Dark Fiber

Groundwater is a critical resource for human activities worldwide, and a vital component of many natural ecosystems. However, the state and dynamics of water-bearing aquifers remain uncertain, mostly due to the paucity of subsurface data at high spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we show that analysis of infrastructure-generated ambient seismic noise acquired on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) arrays has potential as a tool to track variations in seismic velocities (dv/v) caused by groundwater level fluctuations. We analyze 5 months of ambient noise acquired along an unused, 23 km-long telecommunication fiber-optic cable in the Sacramento Valley, CA, a so-called “dark fiber." Three array subsections, ∼6 km apart, are processed and the stretching technique is applied to retrieve daily dv/v beneath each location. Near the Sacramento river, dv/v variations in the order of 2%–3% correlate with precipitation events and fluctuations in river stage of ∼1.5 m. In contrast, regions away (2.5 km) from the river do not experience large dv/v variations. These observations reveal short-scale spatial variability in aquifer dynamics captured by this approach. Dispersion analysis and surface wave inversion of noise gathers reveal that seismic velocity perturbations occur at depths of 10–30 m. Rock physics modeling confirms that observed dv/v are linked to pore pressure changes at these depths, caused by groundwater table fluctuations. Our results suggest that DAS combined with ambient noise interferometry provides a means of tracking aquifer dynamics at high spatial and temporal resolutions at local to regional scales, relevant for effective groundwater resource management.

The antioxidant action of terngymnoside C (1) and hydroxytyrosol-1-glucoside (2), isolated for the first time from the flower buds of Ternstroemia lineata, as well as katsumadin (3), obtained from the seedless fruits, was evaluated using ABTS•+ and H2O2–Saccharomyces cerevisiae models. In silico docking analysis of 1, 2, and 3 determined their affinity forces to the aquaporin monomers of the modeled S. cerevisiae protein 3 (AQP3) and human protein 7 (AQP7) channels that regulate the H2O2 cell transport. The ABTS•+ antiradical capacity of these compounds showed IC50 values of 22.00 μM (1), 47.64 μM (2), and 73.93 μM (3). The S. cerevisiae antioxidant assay showed that at 25 µM (1) and 50 µM (2 and 3), the cells were protected from H2O2-oxidative stress. These compounds, together with quercetin and vitamin C, were explored through the modeled S. cerevisiae AQP3 and human AQP7 by molecular docking analysis. To explain these results, an antioxidant mechanism for the isolated compounds was proposed through blocking H2O2 passage mediated by aquaporin transport. On the other hand, 1, 2, and 3 were not cytotoxic in a panel of three cancer cell lines.

Abstract We conducted a time‐lapse seismic experiment utilizing automated active seismic source and sensor arrays to monitor a reactivated fault within the Opalinus clay formation at the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory (Switzerland), an analog caprock for geologic carbon storage. A series of six brine injections were conducted into the so‐called Main Fault to reactivate it. Seismic instrumentation in five monitoring boreholes on either side of the fault was used to continuously probe changes in P‐wave travel‐times associated with fault displacement and leakage. We performed time‐lapse travel‐time tomography on five hundred sequential data sets; this revealed a zone of decreased P‐wave velocity, up to 16 m/s, during each injection cycle, followed by a velocity increase during shut‐in. These results demonstrate varying elastic property perturbations, both spatially and temporally, along the fault plane during reactivation. We then interpreted these velocity changes in terms of fault dilation induced by pressurized fluids along the fault.

This work reports the modification in the homogeneity of ablation effects with the assistance of nonlinear optical phenomena exhibited by C. albicans ATCC 10231, forming a biofilm. Equivalent optical energies with different levels of intensity were irradiated in comparative samples, and significant changes were observed. Nanosecond pulses provided by an Nd:YAG laser system at a 532 nm wavelength in a single-beam experiment were employed to explore the photodamage and the nonlinear optical transmittance. A nonlinear optical absorption coefficient −2 × 10−6 cm/W was measured in the samples studied. It is reported that multiphotonic interactions can promote more symmetric optical damage derived by faster changes in the evolution of fractional photoenergy transference. The electrochemical response of the sample was studied to further investigate the electronic dynamics dependent on electrical frequency, and an electro-capacitive behavior in the sample was identified. Fractional differential calculations were proposed to describe the thermal transport induced by nanosecond pulses in the fungi media. These results highlight the nonlinear optical effects to be considered as a base for developing photothermally activated phototechnology and high-precision photodamage in biological systems.

El objetivo de esta investigación cualitativa, estudio de caso, fue describir el impacto que ha tenido la pandemia en los procesos de enseñanza en los docentes de idiomas con clases presenciales y la necesidad que tienen de capacitación y formación curricular en saberes digitales. El proceso de análisis se llevó a cabo mediante la aplicación de una encuesta semiestructurada a un grupo conveniente de participantes que prefieren la modalidad presencial forzados a instruir en ambientes de aprendizaje virtual y asistencia remota por primera vez durante la pandemia COVID-19. Se utilizó las dimensiones de las competencias digitales del Marco Común Europeo para la medición de los niveles de dominio de las competencias digitales. Se recurrió al análisis temático. Se categorizaron los temas y en algunos casos se agruparon algunas instancias en subcategorías. Se retomaron los resultados y hallazgos en combinación con la presentación de gráficas descriptivas, tablas y menciones de los participantes. Se recalca que esta investigación se enfoca en recuperar las percepciones de un momento, grupo y situación específica. Los participantes manifestaron haber superado los retos de la competencia digital que se necesitó durante el aislamiento social para atender a los grupos en asistencia remota y de manera virtual. Los dominios de las competencias digitales de los participantes son aceptables, pero aún quedan dimensiones de las competencias digitales por desarrollar. Se manifiesta una necesidad de capacitación de los participantes en las cinco dimensiones, las cuales, de acuerdo con los datos, se deberían incluir en la formación de los futuros docentes de lenguas.

Abstract Introduction Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a public health concern with limited treatment options because it causes a cascade of side effects that are the leading cause of hospital death. Thioredoxin is an enzyme with neuroprotective properties such as antioxidant, antiapoptotic, immune response modulator, and neurogenic, among others; it has been considered a therapeutic target for treating many disorders. Methods The controlled cortical impact (CCI) model was used to assess the effect of recombinant human thioredoxin 1 (rhTrx1) (1 μg/2 μL, intracortical) on rats subjected to TBI at two different times of the light‐dark cycle (01:00 and 13:00 h). We analyzed the food intake, body weight loss, motor coordination, pain perception, and histology in specific hippocampus (CA1, CA2, CA3, and Dental Gyrus) and striatum (caudate‐putamen) areas. Results Body weight loss, reduced food intake, spontaneous pain, motor impairment, and neuronal damage in specific hippocampus and striatum regions are more evident in rats subjected to TBI in the light phase than in the dark phase of the cycle and in groups that did not receive rhTrx1 or minocycline (as positive control). Three days after TBI, there is a recovery in body weight, food intake, motor impairment, and pain, which is more pronounced in the rats subjected to TBI at the dark phase of the cycle and those that received rhTrx1 or minocycline. Conclusions Knowing the time of day a TBI occurs in connection to the neuroprotective mechanisms of the immune response in diurnal variation and the usage of the Trx1 protein might have a beneficial therapeutic impact in promoting quick recovery after a TBI.

In humans, the pituitary gland is covered by a fibrous capsule and is considered a continuation of the meningeal sheath. However, in rodents some studies concluded that only the pars tuberalis (PT) and pars nervosa (PN) are enwrapped by the pia mater, while others showed that the whole gland is covered by this sheath. At PT the median eminence subarachnoid drains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to its cisternal system representing a pathway to the hypothalamus. In the present study we examined the rat pituitary capsule to elucidate its configuration, its physical interaction with the pituitary border and its relationship with the CSF. Furthermore, we also revisited the histology of the pituitary cleft and looked whether CSF drained in it. To answer such questions, we used scanning and transmission electron microscopy, intracerebroventricular infusion of Evan´s blue, fluorescent beads, and sodium fluorescein. The latter was measured in the pars distalis (PD) and various intracranial tissues. We found a pituitary capsule resembling leptomeninges, thick at the dorsal side of the pars intermedia (PI) and PD, thicker at the level of PI in contiguity with the PN and thinner at the rostro-ventral side as a thin membrane of fibroblast-like cells embedded in a fibrous layer. The capsule has abundant capillaries on all sides. Our results showed that the CSFs bathe between the capsule and the surface of the whole gland, and ciliate cells are present in the pituitary border. Our data suggest that the pituitary gland intercommunicates with the central nervous system (CNS) through the CSF.

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prevalent condition in the pediatric population. An index between the diameter of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and the transverse eyeball transverse diameter (ETD) measured in the tomographic scan has been described in adults, with a cutoff value of ≥0.25 for predicting poor neurologic prognoses. This study was conducted to analyze the relationship between the index ONSD/ETD with the neurological outcome in children with severe TBI. Subjects and Methods: This was single-center, retrospective study, conducted from March 2021 to November 2022. Patients older than 30 days and up to 16 years of age admitted with severe TBI were included in the study. Measurements of the ONSD/ETD index by cranial tomography were calculated. The population was divided into two groups, one with index ≥0.25 and other with index <0.25. Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOSE) and outcome were compared between groups. Results: Thirty patients were recruited. Patients with inde × 0.25 or higher had a lower GOSE (60% (1–2 points) vs. 60% (7–8 points)), more days of mechanical ventilation (MV) (8 days, interquartile range IQR 5–17 days vs. 3 days, IQR 2–4 days P = 0.005), and more length of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) stay (12 days, IQR 9–23 days vs. 5 days, IQR 4–8 days P = 0.007) than patients with index <0.25. Conclusions: The ONSD/ETD index was a reliable indicator for predicting the neurological outcome of patients with severe TBI. Cervical cancer is a malignant neoplastic disease, mainly associated to HPV infection, with high mortality rates. Among natural products, iridoids have shown different biological activities, including cytotoxic and antitumor effects, in different cancer cell types. Geniposide and its aglycone Genipin have been assessed against different types of cancer. In this work, both iridoids were evaluated against HeLa and three different cervical cancer cell lines. Furthermore, we performed a SAR analysis incorporating 13 iridoids with a high structural similarity to Geniposide and Genipin, also tested in the HeLa cell line and at the same treatment time. Derived from this analysis, we found that the dipole moment (magnitude and direction) is key for their cytotoxic activity in the HeLa cell line. Then, we proceeded to the ligand-based design of new Genipin derivatives through a QSAR model (R2 = 87.95 and Q2 = 62.33) that incorporates different quantum mechanic molecular descriptor types (ρ, ΔPSA, ∆Polarizability2, and logS). Derived from the ligand-based design, we observed that the presence of an aldehyde or a hydroxymethyl in C4, hydroxyls in C1, C6, and C8, and the lack of the double bond in C7–C8 increased the predicted biological activity of the iridoids. Finally, ten simple iridoids (D9, D107, D35, D36, D55, D56, D58, D60, D61, and D62) are proposed as potential cytotoxic agents against the HeLa cell line based on their predicted IC50 value and electrostatic features.

Este artículo da cuenta de la investigación realizada para la tesis de Maestría en Educación Superior, con el objetivo de analizar los intereses y las representaciones de los estudiantes del curso de ingreso 2018-2019 que influyeron en la elección del profesorado de Educación Física de la Universidad Nacional de La Matanza. Se analizó una muestra de 635 aspirantes a través de un cuestionario autoadministrado con preguntas cerradas y abiertas, categorizadas para su posterior cuantificación. El estudio fue descriptivo utilizando un método cuantitativo procesado con el paquete estadístico SPSS. Los resultados refieren el perfil del aspirante: edad promedio 19 años, 62,8% eran hombres y 37,2% mujeres, 93,7 % del conurbano Bonaerense, un 62% eran egresados de escuelas públicas. Sobre la elección de la carrera el 40,5% lo hizo porque siempre les gustaron los deportes y 15% porque le gusta enseñar. Eligen la escuela como el lugar donde les gustaría trabajar más, sin embargo, es el ámbito no formal relacionado con el deporte, el que se destaca con un 56,1% a diferencia del formal 42%. Este articulo permitirá a la comunidad académica y autoridades universitarias contar con un diagnóstico de situación que genere líneas de acción para evaluar y diseñar estrategias que favorezcan la igualdad de posibilidades en el acceso al conocimiento de los futuros ingresantes.

Objective: Some species of the Russelia genus have been used different illnesses associated with pain and inflammation. The aim of this work was to characterize the biological activities (anti-inflammatory and analgesic) and antioxidant capacity of methanol and dichloromethane extracts of Russelia coccinea. Materials and Methods: In this study, topical anti-inflammatory activity was tested in an in vivo model of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA) induced mouse ear edema of organic extracts (doses: 0.03, 0.1, and 0.3 mg/ear). The antinociceptive activity was assessed using the formalin test in mice of organic extracts (doses: 56, 100 and 300 mg/kg ). Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of the extracts was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiaziline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Results: Methanol (RcM) and dichloromethane (RcD) extracts of the R. coccinea aerial parts were found to inhibit ear edema (48.95 and 40.13%, respectively) at a dose of 0.3 mg/ear. Acute treatment with RcM produced a significant antinociceptive effect in the late phase of formalin-induced nociception. Moreover, RcM at doses of 56, 100 and 300 mg/kg showed a significant antinociceptive effect through the early and late phases in the formalin test. RcM and RcD showed weak antioxidant capacities in the ABTS and DPPH assays; however, when their reducing capacity was evaluated by the FRAP assay, RcM showed a reducing activity similar to Camellia sinensis standard at the proven concentration of 1000 μg/ml. Conclusion: According to the experimental findings, the organic extracts of R. coccinea display remarkable antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities.
