Hearing loss has been associated with individual cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and, to a lesser extent, CVD risk metrics. However, these relationships are understudied in clinical populations. We conducted a retrospective study of electronic health records to evaluate the relationship between hearing loss and CVD risk burden. Hearing loss was defined as puretone average (PTA 0.5,1,2,4 ) > 20 dB hearing level (HL). Optimal CVD risk was defined as nondiabetic, nonsmoking, systolic blood pressure (SBP) < 120 and diastolic (D)BP < 80 mm Hg, and total cholesterol < 180 mg/dL. Major CVD risk factors were diabetes, smoking, hypertension, and total cholesterol ≥ 240 mg/dL or statin use. We identified 6332 patients (mean age = 62.96 years; 45.5% male); 64.0% had hearing loss. Sex-stratified logistic regression adjusted for age, noise exposure, hearing aid use, and body mass index examined associations between hearing loss and CVD risk. For males, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, and ≥ 2 major CVD risk factors were associated with hearing loss. For females, diabetes, smoking, and ≥ 2 major CVD risk factors were significant risk factors. Compared to those with no CVD risk factors, there is a higher likelihood of hearing loss in patients with ≥ 2 major CVD risk factors. Across the globe, the legal land rights and tenure of many Indigenous peoples are yet to be recognized. A growing body of research demonstrates that tenure of Indigenous lands improves livelihoods and protects forests in addition to inherently recognizing human rights. However, the effect of tenure on environmental outcomes has scarcely been tested in regions with high development pressure, such as those with persisting forest-agriculture conflicts. In this paper, we conduct an event study and a difference-in-differences analysis to estimate the average treatment effect of land tenure on forest cover change for 129 Indigenous lands in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil from 1985 to 2019. We found that forest outcomes in Indigenous lands improved following tenure compared to pretenure and that forest outcomes improved in tenured compared to nontenured lands. We also found that formalized tenure, rather than incomplete tenure, was necessary to improve forest outcomes. Our study is the first rigorous analysis of the effect of tenure on Indigenous lands in the globally important Atlantic Forest biome and contributes to a growing body of literature on the role of rights-based approaches to conservation. Introduction: A relationship between tobacco smoking and hearing loss has been reported; associations with cannabis smoking are unknown. In this cross-sectional population-based study, we examined relationships between hearing loss and smoking (tobacco, cannabis, or co-drug use)., Methods: We explored the relationship between hearing loss and smoking among 2705 participants [mean age = 39.41 (SE: 0.36) years] in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011 to 12; 2015 to 16). Smoking status was obtained via questionnaire; four mutually exclusive groups were defined: nonsmokers, current regular cannabis smokers, current regular tobacco smokers, and co-drug users. Hearing sensitivity (0.5 to 8 kHz) was assessed, and two puretone averages (PTAs) computed: low- (PTA 0.5,1,2 ) and high-frequency (PTA 3,4,6,8 ). We defined hearing loss as threshold >15 dB HL. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine sex-specific associations between smoking and hearing loss in the poorer ear (selected based on PTA 0.5,1,2 ) adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, hypertension, diabetes, education, and noise exposure with sample weights applied., Results: In the age-sex adjusted model, tobacco smokers had increased odds of low- and high-frequency hearing loss compared with non-smokers [odds ratio (OR) = 1.58, 95% confidence ratio (CI): 1.05 to 2.37 and OR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.58 to 2.45, respectively]. Co-drug users also had greater odds of low- and high-frequency hearing loss [OR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.10 to 3.91 and OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.27 to 3.96, respectively]. In the fully adjusted multivariable model, compared with non-smokers, tobacco smokers had greater odds of high-frequency hearing loss [multivariable adjusted odds ratio = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.28-2.09]. However, in the fully adjusted model, there were no statistically significant relationships between hearing loss (PTA 0.5,1,2 or PTA 3,4,6,8 ) and cannabis smoking or co-drug use., Discussion: Cannabis smoking without concomitant tobacco consumption is not associated with hearing loss. However, sole use of cannabis was relatively rare and the prevalence of hearing loss in this population was low, limiting generalizability of the results. This study suggests that tobacco smoking may be a risk factor for hearing loss but does not support an association between hearing loss and cannabis smoking. The ability to navigate scientific obstacles is widely recognized as a hallmark of a scientific disposition and is one predictor of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics persistence for early-career scientists. However, the development of this competency in undergraduate research has been largely underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining introductory students' emotional and behavioral responses to research-related challenges and failures that occur in two sequential research-based courses. We describe commonly reported emotions, coping responses, and perceived outcomes and examine relationships between these themes, student demographics, and course enrollment. Students commonly experience frustration, confusion, and disappointment when coping with challenges and failures. Yet the predominance of students report coping responses likely to be adaptive in academic contexts despite experiencing negative emotions. Being enrolled in the second course of a research-based course sequence was related to several shifts in response to challenges during data collection, including less reporting of confusion and fewer reports of learning to be cautious from students. Overall, students in both the first and second courses reported many positive outcomes indicating improvements in their ability to cope with challenge and failure. We assert that educators can improve research-based educational courses by scaffolding students' research trials, failures, and iterations to support students' perseverance.

Objectives: On the basis of the data from school-aged children, there is consistent evidence that there is a prolonged course of auditory development for perceiving speech embedded in competing background sounds. Furthermore, age-related differences are prolonged and pronounced for a two-talker speech masker compared to a speech-shaped noise masker. However, little is known about the course of development during the toddler and preschool years because it is difficult to collect reliable behavioral data from this age range. The goal of this study was to extend our lower age limit to include toddlers and preschoolers to characterize the developmental trajectory for masked speech detection thresholds across childhood., Design: Participants were 2- to 15-year-old children (n = 67) and adults (n = 17), all with normal hearing. Thresholds (71%) were measured for detecting a two-syllable word embedded in one of two maskers: speech-shaped noise or two-talker speech. The masker was presented at 55 dB SPL throughout testing. Stimuli were presented to the left ear via a lightweight headphone. Data were collected using an observer-based testing method in which the participant's behavior was judged by an experimenter using a two-interval, two-alternative testing paradigm. The participant's response to the stimulus was shaped by training him/her to perform a conditioned play-based response to the sound. For children, receptive vocabulary and working memory were measured. Data were fitted with a linear regression model to establish the course of development for each masker condition. Appropriateness of the test method was also evaluated by determining if there were age-related differences in training data, inter-rater reliability, or slope or upper asymptote estimates from pooled psychometric functions across different age groups., Results: Child and adult speech detection thresholds were poorer in the two-talker masker than in the speech-shaped noise masker, but different developmental trajectories were seen for the two masker conditions. For the speech-shaped noise masker, threshold improved by about 5 dB across the age span tested, with adult-like performance being reached around 10 years of age. For the two-talker masker condition, thresholds improved by about 7 dB between 2.5 and 15 years. However, the linear fit for this condition failed to achieve adult-like performance because of limited data from teenagers. No significant age-related differences were seen in training data, probe hit rate, or inter-rater reliability. Furthermore, slope and upper asymptote estimates from pooled psychometric functions were similar across different child age groups., Conclusions: Different developmental patterns were seen across the two maskers, with more pronounced child-adult differences and prolonged immaturity during childhood for the two-talker masker relative to the speech-shaped noise masker. Our data do not support the idea that there is rapid improvement of masked speech detection thresholds between 2.5 and 5 years of age. Background: Numerous cardiometabolic factors may underlie risk of hearing loss. Modifiable risk factors such as non-optimal blood pressure (BP) are of interest., Purpose: To investigate early auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) in persons with nonoptimal BP., Research Design: A cross-sectional nonexperimental study was performed., Study Sample: Fifty-two adults (18-55 years) served as subjects. Individuals were classified as having optimal (systolic [S] BP < 120 and diastolic [D] BP < 80 mm Hg, n  = 25) or non-optimal BP (SBP ≥=120 or DBP ≥=80 mm Hg or antihypertensive use, n  = 27). Thirteen subjects had hypertension (HTN) (SBP ≥130 or DBP ≥80 mm Hg or use of antihypertensives)., Data Collection and Analysis: Behavioral thresholds from 0.25 to 16 kHz were collected. Threshold auditory brain stem responses (ABRs) were recorded using rarefaction clicks (17.7/second) from 80 dB nHL to wave V threshold. Electrocochleograms were obtained with 90 dB nHL 7.1/second alternating clicks and assessed for summating and compound action potentials (APs). Outcomes were compared via independent samples t tests. Linear mixed effects models for behavioral thresholds and ABR wave latencies were constructed to account for potential confounders., Results: Wave I and III latencies were comparable between optimal and non-optimal BP groups. Wave I was prolonged in hypertensive versus optimal BP subjects at stimulus level 70 dB nHL ( p  = 0.016). ABR wave V latencies were prolonged in non-optimal BP at stimulus level 80 dB nHL ( p  = 0.048) and in HTN at levels of 80, 50, and 30 dB nHL (all p  < 0.050). DBP was significantly correlated with wave V latency ( r  = 0.295; p  = 0.039). No differences in ABR amplitudes were observed between optimal and non-optimal BP subjects. Electrocochleographic study showed statistically comparable action and summating potential amplitudes between optimal and non-optimal BP subjects. AP latencies were also similar between the groups. Analysis using a set baseline amplitude of 0 μV showed that hypertensive subjects had higher summating ( p  = 0.038) and AP ( p  = 0.047) amplitudes versus optimal BP subjects; AP latencies were comparable., Conclusion: Elevated BP and more specifically, HTN was associated with subtle AEP abnormalities. Objectives: The association between hearing loss and risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure (BP), has been evaluated in numerous studies. However, data from population- and laboratory-based studies remain inconclusive. Furthermore, most prior work has focused on the effects of BP level on behavioral hearing sensitivity. In this study, we investigated cochlear integrity using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in persons with subtle elevation in BP levels (nonoptimal BP) hypothesizing that nonoptimal BP would be associated with poorer cochlear function., Design: Sixty individuals [55% male, mean age = 31.82 (SD = 11.17) years] took part in the study. The authors measured pure-tone audiometric thresholds from 0.25 to 16 kHz and computed four pure-tone averages (PTAs) for the following frequency combinations (in kHz): PTA0.25, 0.5, 0.75, PTA1, 1.5, 2, 3, PTA4, 6, 8, and PTA10, 12.5, 16. DPOAEs at the frequency 2f1-f2 were recorded for L1/L2 = 65/55 dB SPL using an f2/f1 ratio of 1.22. BP was measured, and subjects were categorized as having either optimal BP (systolic/diastolic <120 and <80 mm Hg) or nonoptimal BP (systolic ≥120 or diastolic ≥80 mm Hg or use of antihypertensives). Between-group differences in behavioral thresholds and DPOAE levels were evaluated using 95% confidence intervals. Pearson product-moment correlations were run to assess the relationships between: (1) thresholds (all four PTAs) and BP level and (2) DPOAE [at low (f2 ≤ 2 kHz), mid (f2 > 2 kHz and ≤10 kHz), and high (f2 > 10 kHz) frequency bins] and BP level. Linear mixed-effects models were constructed to account for the effects of BP status, stimulus frequency, age and sex on thresholds, and DPOAE amplitudes., Results: Significant positive correlations between diastolic BP and all four PTAs and systolic BP and PTA0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and PTA4, 6, 8 were observed. There was not a significant effect of BP status on hearing thresholds from 0.5 to 16 kHz after adjustment for age, sex, and frequency. Correlations between diastolic and systolic BP and DPOAE levels were statistically significant at the high frequencies and for the relationship between diastolic BP and DPOAE level at the mid frequencies. Averaged across frequency, the nonoptimal BP group had DPOAE levels 1.50 dB lower (poorer) than the optimal BP group and differences were statistically significant (p = 0.03)., Conclusions: Initial findings suggest significant correlations between diastolic BP and behavioral thresholds and diastolic BP and mid-frequency DPOAE levels. However, adjusted models indicate other factors are more important drivers of impaired auditory function. Contrary to our hypothesis, we found that subtle BP elevation was not associated with poorer hearing sensitivity or cochlear dysfunction. We consider explanations for the null results. Greater elevation in BP (i.e., hypertension itself) may be associated with more pronounced effects on cochlear function, warranting further investigation. Purpose To overcome methodology limitations for studying auditory development in young children, we have recently developed an observer-based procedure that uses a conditioned, play-based, motor response (see Bonino & Leibold, 2017). The purpose of this article was to examine interrater reliability for the method. Method Video recordings of test sessions of 2- to 4-year-old children ( n = 17) were examined. Detection of a 1000-Hz warble tone was measured with the Play Observer-Based, Two-Interval (PlayO2I) method in each of two conditions: for a fixed intensity level (30 dB SPL) or for a variable intensity level signal (0-30 dB SPL). All test sessions were scored independently by three observers (one real-time, two offline). Observer consensus was evaluated with Fleiss' kappa statistic. To determine if summary data were similar across the observers of each test session, the proportion of correct trials (fixed-level condition) or threshold (variable-level condition) were computed. Results The strength of observer consensus was classified as "almost perfect" and "substantial" for the fixed-level and variable-level conditions, respectively. Follow-up analysis of the variable-level data indicated that differences in observer consensus were seen based on the signal level, the type of response behavior provided by the child, and the confidence level of the real-time observer. Resulting summary data were similar across the three observers of each test session: no significant differences for estimates of the proportion of correct trials or threshold. Conclusions Results from this study confirm strong interrater reliability for the method. The PlayO2I method is a powerful tool for measuring detection and discrimination abilities in young children. Purpose Cannabis is widely used for medicinal and recreational purposes. Studies have evaluated its health benefits and consequences, although there is limited work on its effects on the auditory system. In this exploratory study, we evaluate the effects of cannabis smoking on early auditory evoked potentials. Method We investigated auditory brainstem response (ABR) and electrocochleography waveforms in 18 cannabis smokers (44% women, 54% men; M age = 23.06 years, range: 21-28 years) and 19 nonsmoker controls (63% women, 37% men; M age = 23.74 years, range: 21-33 years). Threshold ABRs were recorded using rarefaction clicks at a rate of 17.7/s from 80 dB nHL to Wave V threshold. Resulting amplitudes and latencies for Waves I, III, and V were compared via independent-samples t tests. Electrocochleograms obtained with 90 dB nHL (7.1/s) alternating clicks were assessed for summating and compound action potentials, which were compared between groups using independent-samples t tests. Results ABR Wave I amplitudes were significantly lower in smokers ( M = 0.14 μV, SD = 0.11) compared to nonsmokers ( M = 0.21 μV, SD = 0.10, p = .039) at 80 dB nHL. Wave V latencies were significantly delayed in smokers at 80 dB nHL. Wave I and III latencies did not differ significantly between the two groups. Summating potential/compound action potential ratios were significantly elevated in smokers ( M = 0.30, SD = 0.04) versus nonsmokers ( M = 0.21, SD = 0.05, p = .042). Conclusion We identified significant differences in electrophysiological outcomes between cannabis smokers and nonsmokers. Cannabis smoking may have a subtle neurotoxic effect on the auditory system. Larger confirmatory studies are warranted.

Pair-bond formation depends vitally on neuromodulatory signaling within the nucleus accumbens, but the neuronal dynamics underlying this behavior remain unclear. Using 1-photon in vivo Ca 2+ imaging in monogamous prairie voles, we found that pair bonding does not elicit differences in overall nucleus accumbens Ca 2+ activity. Instead, we identified distinct ensembles of neurons in this region that are recruited during approach to either a partner or a novel vole. The partner-approach neuronal ensemble increased in size following bond formation, and differences in the size of approach ensembles for partner and novel voles predict bond strength. In contrast, neurons comprising departure ensembles do not change over time and are not correlated with bond strength, indicating that ensemble plasticity is specific to partner approach. Furthermore, the neurons comprising partner and novel-approach ensembles are nonoverlapping while departure ensembles are more overlapping than chance, which may reflect another key feature of approach ensembles. We posit that the features of the partner-approach ensemble and its expansion upon bond formation potentially make it a key neuronal substrate associated with bond formation and maturation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest.

The Karlberg model of human growth describes the infancy, childhood, and puberty (ICP) stages as continuous and overlapping, and defined by transitions driven by sequential additional effects of several endocrine factors that shape the growth trajectory and resultant adult size. Previous research has suggested that a delayed transition from the infancy to the childhood growth stage contributes to sub-optimal growth outcomes. A new method developed to analyze the structure of centile crossing in early life has emerged as a potential tool for identifying the infancy-childhood transition (ICT), through quantifying patterns of adjacent monthly weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) deviation correlations. Using this method, the infancy-childhood transition was identified as taking place at around 12 months of age in two cohorts of UK infants. Here, we apply this method to data collected as part of a longitudinal growth study in rural Gambia [the Hormonal and Epigenetic Regulators of Growth, or HERO-G study, N = 212 (F = 99, M = 113)], in order to identify the ICT and assess whether timing of this transition differs across groups based on sex or birth seasonality. We calculated Pearson correlation coefficients for adjacent monthly WAZ score deviations. Based on the patterns of change in the correlation structure over time, our results suggest that the infancy-childhood transition occurs at around 9 months of age in rural Gambian infants. This points to an accelerated ICT compared to UK infants, rather than a delayed ICT. A comparatively later transition, seen in UK infants, allows maximal extension of the high rates of growth during the infancy stage; an earlier transition as seen in Gambian infants cuts short this period of rapid growth, potentially impacting on growth outcomes in childhood while diverting energy into other processes critical to responses to acute infectious challenges. Purpose It is challenging to collect reliable behavioral data from toddlers and preschoolers. Consequently, we have significant gaps in our understanding of how auditory development unfolds during this time period. One method that appears to be promising is an observer-based procedure that uses conditioned, play-based responses (Bonino & Leibold, 2017). In order to evaluate the quality of data obtained with this method, this study presented a suprathreshold signal to determine the number of trials 2- to 7-year-old children could complete, as well as the associated hit rate and observer confidence. Method Participants were 23 children (2-7 years old). Children were taught to perform a play-based motor response when they detected the 1000-Hz warble tone signal (at 30 dB SPL). An observer evaluated children's behavior using a 2-interval, 2-alternative testing paradigm. Testing was terminated after 100 trials or earlier, if signs of habituation were observed. Results Data were successfully collected from 22 of the 23 children. Of the 22 children, all but 1 child completed 100 trials. Overall hit rate was high (0.88-1.0; M = 0.94) and improved with listener age. Hit rate was stable across the test session. Strong agreement was seen between the correctness of the response and the observer's confidence in the judgment. Conclusion Results of this study confirm that the 2-interval, observer-based procedure described in this article is a powerful tool for measuring detection and discrimination abilities in young children. Pit latrines can provide improved household sanitation, but without effective and inexpensive emptying options, they are often abandoned once full and may pose a public health threat. Emptying techniques can be difficult, as the sludge contents of each pit latrine are different. The design of effective emptying techniques (e.g., pumps) is limited by a lack of data characterizing typical in situ latrine sludge resistance. This investigation aimed to better understand the community education and technical engineering needs necessary to improve pit latrine management. In low income areas within Mzuzu city, Malawi, 300 pit latrines from three distinct areas were assessed using a dynamic cone penetrometer to quantify fecal sludge strength, and household members were surveyed to determine their knowledge of desludging procedures and practices likely to impact fecal sludge characteristics. The results demonstrate that there is a significant difference in sludge strength between lined and unlined pits within a defined area, though sludge hardened with depth, regardless of the pit type or region. There was only limited association between cone penetration depth and household survey data. To promote the adoption of pit emptying, it is recommended that households be provided with information that supports pit emptying, such as latrine construction designs, local pit emptying options, and cost. This study indicates that the use of a penetrometer test in the field prior to pit latrine emptying may facilitate the selection of appropriate pit emptying technology.

Summary:Pharmacokinetic and clinical outcome measures among three groups of patients undergoing hematopoietic transplant were assessed: group A: Parenteral busulfan (Bu) 3.2?mg/kg i.v. given qd, n=20; group B: parenteral Bu 0.8?mg/kg i.v. given every 6?h, n=11; group C: Bu 1?mg/kg p.o. given every 6?h, n=25. All groups received Bu over 4 days followed by Cy 60?mg/kg i.v. qd over 2 days; followed by an infusion of allogeneic stem cells. Median Bu clearance was 3.21?ml/min/kg and median daily AUC was 4071?µmol/min for the group A patients. The dosing formula for Bu i.v. qd was highly predictive of the AUC for patients whose mass?IBW+20%. For patients of greater mass, the dosing formula uniformly resulted in lower-than-predicted AUC. Neurologic toxicity, hepatic toxicity, hematologic engraftment, and relapse at 100 days were comparable across all three groups. Severe AGVHD was least among group A, followed by group B when compared with group C. Post-dispersal male African elephants (Loxodonta africana) live within complex social networks. To quantify the consistency of male elephant character (or personality) within these networks, we employed behavioral repeatability analysis tools across social and environmental contexts. We collected behavioral data from thirty-four individually-identified male elephants at the same waterhole over five field seasons (2007–2011) in Etosha National Park, Namibia. Using repeatability models to assess ten behavioral categories, we found five behaviors (affiliation, aggression, dominance, self-directed anxious, and self-directed comfort) were consistent at the individual level. Some of these behaviors were also repeatable, depending on social context. In particular, the presence of younger males and a keystone male (i.e., the most dominant and socially-integrated individual during our study period) had the biggest impact on adult male behaviors. Surprisingly, the presence of elephants in musth had little impact. Finally, we found that younger individuals were more alike in their overall character profiles than older males, further supporting the hypothesis that male elephants develop unique, yet socially-flexible character types as they age. These results demonstrate that male elephants possess distinct character traits that are also behaviorally adaptable, depending on the social context. Overall, our research further highlights the complexity of male elephant individuality and social dynamics that might be leveraged to improve in-situ and ex-situ management and conservation decisions for the species. Objectives: To examine patient, hospital, and geographic characteristics influencing variation in computed tomography (CT) scan use in inpatients in New York State., Study Design: Retrospective cohort study., Methods: We used the 2007 healthcare cost and utilization project's state inpatient database from the agency for healthcare research and quality and applied descriptive univariate statistics and logistic regression models to quantify the influence of each factor on CT scan use., Results: The primary contributors to variation in CT scan use were the inpatients' diagnosis, age, and hospital county, whereas inpatients' sex and method of payment and hospitals' teaching status and size had very little effect. Inpatients diagnosed with trauma had the highest CT scan use; CT scan use increased with age for inpatients over 30 years; and CT scan use varied widely between counties., Conclusions: After controlling for patient and hospital characteristics, significant geographic variation remained at the level of the county, which indicates that additional research investigating the use of CT scans is necessary to understand the reasons behind small-area variation. Understanding the distribution and practice patterns of specific physician specialties may be helpful in curtailing underuse and overuse.

Although the well-being of elephants in captivity is of paramount importance, the confinement of these long-lived, highly intelligent, and socially complex animals continues to present significant challenges. Here, we provide an overview of the current state of elephant confinement (primarily in the West) by examining captive facilities, improvements, and continuing problems, and the clinical/behavioral/neural issues that remain. Specifically, we examine quantitative and qualitative aspects of the enclosed space, sociocognitive factors, dietary differences, and health/welfare concerns (e.g., stereotypies, physical health, nutrition, reproduction, life expectancy). The challenges of the captive environment become especially salient when juxtaposed next to the complex, multifaceted characteristics of the elephant's natural environment. Despite the best efforts of some facilities to improve the captive environment, serious welfare challenges remain. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is uncommon in patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Most previously described patients with breast cancer and PCP received treatment with corticosteroids, a known risk factor for PCP. We describe two patients with metastatic breast cancer who developed PCP after receiving therapy with high doses of cyclophosphamide with peripheral blood stem cell support. Both patients developed fevers of unclear etiology in the setting of recovery of the neutrophil count. Only one patient had pulmonary symptoms. P. carinii infection was documented in both cases by bronchoscopy. One patient died after prolonged ventilatory support for PCP. Steroid exposure did not appear to be a risk factor for the development of PCP in either patient. Patients receiving sequential high doses of chemotherapy with stem cell support may be at increased risk for PCP. The role of prophylaxis for PCP in this setting should be continually redefined as the type and intensity of chemotherapy, as well as methods of procurement of autologous stem cells, continue to change.

Transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the setting of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation can occur through an infected marrow donor. Prevention of transmission may reduce the risks of peritransplant complications. We describe a 43-year-old patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia whose HLA-identical donor was found to be HCV antibody positive and HCV RNA positive by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The patient was HCV antibody negative and HCV RNA negative by PCR of the serum. For 6 months before bone marrow transplantation, the donor was treated with alpha-interferon at a standard dose. After 3 months, HCV RNA was no longer detectable by PCR. Interferon was discontinued 1 week before harvest. Bone marrow cellularity was normal. Engraftment was prompt. The recipient's serum remained negative for HCV RNA at 1, 3, 5, and 10 months after transplantation. Hepatitis C transmission from a viremic donor to an HCV-seronegative recipient may be preventable by treating the donor with alpha-interferon.

Objective: To determine if the addition of recombinant (r) human interleukin (IL)-12 enhances in vitro proliferative responses to Mycobacterium avium of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from HIV-positive donors with CD4 cell counts < 100 x 10(6)/l., Design and Methods: PBMC proliferative responses to virulent and avirulent serovars of M. avium in the presence and absence of exogenously added IL-12 were determined in 24 HIV-positive and 11 HIV-negative donors by 3H-thymidine uptake assay. Changes in CD4 and CD8 cell populations after IL-12 treatment and M. avium stimulation were analyzed by FACS., Results: IL-12 significantly enhanced proliferation of PBMC to both virulent and avirulent M. avium from all 24 HIV-positive donors (P = 0.0001) although the magnitude varied for each donor. In contrast, addition of IL-12 to PBMC from HIV-negative donors only increased the proliferative responses to the virulent M. avium serovar 4 (P = 0.0044). PBMC from HIV-positive donors in the presence of IL-12 responded better to the avirulent serovar of M. avium than the virulent serovar 4. Proliferative responses of HIV-positive donors to M. avium alone, however, were significantly less (P = 0.0013) than that of HIV-negative donors. Increased proliferative responses of HIV-positive donors were independent of CD4 counts. No significant changes in the ratio of CD4+ to CD8+ T cells occurred in either HIV-positive or negative donors under any culture conditions., Conclusion: In vitro proliferative responses of PBMC from HIV-positive donors to M. avium were significantly enhanced by the addition of human rIL-12, which was not dependent on their CD4 cell counts. The use of IL-12 as an enhancer of cell-mediated immunity in AIDS patients against M. avium infections deserves further study.

Background: Unwarranted temporal and geographical variations are acknowledged as a profound problem for equal access and justice in the provision of health services. Even more, they challenge the quality, safety, and efficiency of such services. This is highly relevant for imaging services. Objective: To analyse the temporal and geographical variation in the number of diagnostic images in Norway from 2013 to 2021. Methods: Data on outpatient imaging provided by the Norwegian Health Economics Administration (HELFO) and inpatient data afforded by fourteen hospital trusts and hospitals in Norway. Data include the total number of imaging examinations according to the Norwegian Classification of Radiological Procedures (NCRP). Analyses were performed with descriptive statistics. Results: More than 37 million examinations were performed in Norway during 2013–2021 giving an average of 4.2 million examinations per year. In 2021 there was performed and average of 0.8 examinations per person and 2.2 examinations per person for the age group > 80. There was a 9% increase in the total number of examinations from 2013 to 2015 and a small and stable decrease of 0.5% per year from 2015 to 2021 (with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic). On average 71% of all examinations were outpatient examinations and 32% were conducted at private imaging centres. There were substantial variations between the health regions, with Region South-East having 53.1% more examinations per inhabitant than Region West. The geographical variation was even more outspoken when comparing catchment areas, where Oslo University Hospital Trust had twice as many examinations per inhabitant than Finnmark Hospital Trust. Conclusion: As the population in Norway is homogeneous it is difficult to attribute the variations to socio-economic or demographic factors. Busulfan (Bu) is an important component of many conditioning regimens for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. The therapeutic window of Bu is well characterized, with strong associations between Bu exposure and the clinical outcome in adults (strongest evidence in myelo-ablative setting) and children (all settings). We provide an overview of the literature on Bu as well as a step-by-step guide to the implementation of Bu therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). The guide covers the clinical, pharmacological, laboratory and administrative aspects of the procedure. Through this document, we aim to support centers in implementing TDM for Bu to further enhance the success rates of HCT and improve patient outcomes. Objectives: To assess the relationship of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL)., Databases Reviewed: Ovid MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane., Methods: A systematic review was performed. Studies were identified using Ovid MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane from 1946 to 2023. Per Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, abstracts were screened for primary review. Full texts were reviewed for secondary review., Results: There were 3,440 unique abstracts screened. After primary review of abstracts and secondary full text review, 68 articles were included. The relationship between SNHL and the following CVDs, risk factors, and interventions were ascertained: coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, coronary artery disease (CAD), carotid stenosis (CS), myocardial infarction (MI), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), other arteriosclerosis, cerebral small vascular disease, cerebrovascular accident (CVA), transient ischemic attack (TIA), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), hyperlipidemia (HLD), hypertension (HTN), and diabetes mellitus (DM). CABG and CAD were consistently associated with SNHL. DM was associated with SNHL, but HTN and HLD were not consistently associated., Conclusions: There is a complex relationship between CVDs and SNHL. CABG and CAD were consistently associated with SNHL. Objectives: Assess the association of hearing on sex-specific overall mortality and death from acute cardiovascular disease and evaluate if these effects are modulated by postural balance., Study Design: Cohort study., Setting: Otolaryngology department at an academic hospital., Methods: Patients underwent standard clinical examination, laboratory examination including stabilometry and audiometry. Pure tone average on the best hearing ear was calculated from 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 kHz. Cause of death was retrieved from the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry., Results: A total of 1036 patients (58.8% women) were followed for 26 ± 3 years. In Cox regression analyses for overall mortality adjusted for age, past medical history, and vestibular disease, 10 dB increase in hearing threshold was associated with a 14% increase in mortality among men (hazard ratio 95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.28, P = .02), but no significant association was seen between hearing and mortality in women (0.92-1.15, P = .60). The same analyses for acute cardiovascular death found that a 10 dB increase in hearing threshold was associated with a 57% increase in hazard ratio in men (1.21-2.05, P < .001), but no significant effect of hearing on survival was seen in women (P = .71). Adjusting for postural balance did not change the association between hearing and mortality., Conclusion: This study finds hearing threshold is associated with overall mortality and acute cardiovascular death among men, with no such association observed among women. Objective: The goal of the present study was to estimate the risk of hearing impairment in patients with COPD using huge nationwide population., Methods: A retrospective case-control study was performed using the National Health Insurance Database in South Korea from 2002 through 2019. Totally 614,370 COPD patients and matched 2,170,504 control participants were selected at a 1:4 ratio. Hearing impairment was defined based on the registered data in the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea with six levels of severity of hearing impairment. The propensity score was calculated, and overlap-weighted multinomial logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratios of COPD for hearing impairment., Results: A total of 2.67% of COPD patients and 1.9% of control participants had hearing impairment. The COPD patients indicated 1.10-1.21 times higher odds for hearing impairment according to the severity of hearing impairment than the control group. In accordance with age and sex, the younger age group (<65 years old) and female group demonstrated higher odds for hearing impairment related to the presence of COPD. Training complex skills is typically accomplished by means of a trainer or mediator who tailors instruction to the individual trainee. However, facilitated training is costly and labor intensive, and the use of a mediator is infeasible in remote or extreme environments. Imparting complex skills in applications like longduration human spaceflight, military field operations, or remote medicine may require automated training algorithms. Virtual reality (VR) is an effective, easily programmable, immersive training medium that has been used widely across fields. However, there remain open questions in the search for the most effective algorithms for guiding automated training progression. This study investigates the effects of responsiveness, personalization, and subtask independence on the efficacy of automated training algorithms in VR for training complex, operationally relevant tasks. Thirty-two subjects (16M/16F, 18-54 years) were trained to pilot and land a spacecraft on Mars within a VR simulation using four different automated training algorithms. Performance was assessed in a physical cockpit mock-up. We found that personalization results in faster skill acquisition on average when compared with a standardized progression built for a median subject (p = 0.0050). The standardized progression may be preferable when consistent results are desired across all subjects. Independence of the difficulty adjustments between subtasks may lead to increased skill acquisition, while lockstep in the progression of each subtask increases self-reported flow experience (p = 0.01), fluency (p = 0.02), and absorption (p = 0.01) on the Flow Short Scale. Data visualization suggests that highly responsive algorithms may lead to faster learning progressions and higher skill acquisition for some subjects. Improving transfer of skills from training to testing may require either high responsiveness or a standardized training progression. Optimizing the design of automated, individually adaptive algorithms around the training needs of a group may be useful to increase skill acquisition for complex operational tasks. Nowadays, in Benin, latrine construction by households highly depends on their financial contributions. However, empirical evidence shows that many households are unwilling to invest in adequate sanitation services. The study aims to determine the household's willingness to pay for improved sanitation services and the associated factors. The study population will include households lacking unimproved sanitation facilities. The household heads will be eligible for survey participation. We will perform a contingent valuation to determine households' willingness to pay for a Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrine. Following a description of the surveyed population, we will assess willingness to pay using the ' doubleb ' command in Stata. Subsequently, we will conduct multivariate logistic regression to determine the factors associated with willingness to pay. The expected results will be: a description of the basic characteristics of households without improved sanitation services, an estimation of household willingness to pay for VIP latrines using the contingent valuation, and factors associated with household willingness to pay for VIP latrines. Social interactions affect physiological and pathological processes, yet their direct impact in peripheral tissues remains elusive. Recently we showed that disruption of pair bonds in monogamous Peromyscus californicus promotes lung tumorigenesis, pointing to a direct effect of bonding status in the periphery (Naderi et al., 2021). Here we show that lung transcriptomes of tumor-free Peromyscus are altered in a manner that depends on pair bonding and superseding the impact of genetic relevance between siblings. Pathways affected involve response to hypoxia and heart development. These effects are consistent with the profile of the serum proteome of bonded and bond-disrupted Peromyscus and were extended to lung cancer cells cultured in vitro, with sera from animals that differ in bonding experiences. In this setting, the species' origin of serum (deer mouse vs FBS) is the most potent discriminator of RNA expression profiles, followed by bonding status. By analyzing the transcriptomes of lung cancer cells exposed to deer mouse sera, an expression signature was developed that discriminates cells according to the history of social interactions and possesses prognostic significance when applied to primary human lung cancers. The results suggest that present and past social experiences modulate the expression profile of peripheral tissues such as the lungs, in a manner that impacts physiological processes and may affect disease outcomes. Furthermore, they show that besides the direct effects of the hormones that regulate bonding behavior, physiological changes influencing oxygen metabolism may contribute to the adverse effects of bond disruption. The social and mating systems of orangutans, one of our closest relatives, remain poorly understood. Orangutans (Pongo spp.) are highly sexually dimorphic and females are philopatric and maintain individual, but overlapping home ranges, whereas males disperse, are non-territorial and wide-ranging, and show bimaturism, with many years between reaching sexual maturity and attaining full secondary sexual characteristics (including cheek pads (flanges) and emitting long calls). We report on 21 assigned paternities, among 35 flanged and 15 unflanged, genotyped male Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii), studied from 2003 to 2018 in Tuanan (Central Kalimantan, Indonesia). All 10 infants born since mid-2003 with an already identified sire were sired by flanged males. All adult males ranged well beyond the study area (c. 1000 ha), and their dominance relations fluctuated even within short periods. However, 5 of the 10 identified sires had multiple offspring within the monitored area. Several sired over a period of c. 10 years, which overlapped with siring periods of other males. The long-calling behavior of sires indicated they were not consistently dominant over other males in the area around the time of known conceptions. Instead, when they were seen in the area, the known sires spent most of their time within the home ranges of the females whose offspring they sired. Overall, successful sires were older and more often resident than others. Significance statement: It is difficult to assess reproductive success for individuals of long-lived species, especially for dispersing males, who cannot be monitored throughout their lives. Due to extremely long interbirth intervals, orangutans have highly male-skewed operational sex ratios and thus intensive male-male competition for every conception. Paternity analyses matched 21 immature Bornean orangutans with their most likely sire (only 10 of 50 genotyped males) in a natural population. Half of these identified sires had multiple offspring in the study area spread over periods of at least 10 years, despite frequently ranging outside this area. Dominance was a poor predictor of success, but, consistent with female mating tactics to reduce the risk of infanticide, known "sires" tended to have relatively high local presence, which seems to contribute to the males' siring success. Objective: We aimed to investigate the potential environmental risk factors, protective factors, and biomarkers of hearing loss (HL), and establish a hierarchy of evidence., Data Sources: Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science electronic database from inception to June 1, 2023., Review Methods: We included meta-analyses of observational studies of associations between HL and environmental risk factors, protective factors, or biomarkers. We calculated summary effect estimates, 95% confidence interval, heterogeneity I 2 statistic, 95% prediction interval, small study effects, and excess significance biases., Results: Of the 9211 articles retrieved, 60 eligible articles were included. The 60 eligible articles identified 47 potential environmental risk and protective factors (N = 4,123,803) and 46 potential biomarkers (N = 173,701). Evidence of association was convincing (class I) for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and every 1 cm increase in height. T-cell malignancy is a broad term used for a diverse group of disease subtypes representing dysfunctional malignant T cells transformed at various stages of their clonal evolution. Despite having similar clinical manifestations, these disease groups have different disease progressions and diagnostic parameters. The effective diagnosis and prognosis of such a diverse disease group demands testing of molecular entities that capture footprints of the disease physiology in its entirety. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a group of noncoding RNA molecules that regulate the expression of genes and, while doing so, leave behind specific miRNA signatures corresponding to cellular expression status in an altered stage of a disease. Using miRNAs as a diagnostic tool is justified, as they can effectively distinguish expressional diversity between various tumors and within subtypes of T-cell malignancies. As global attention for cancer diagnosis shifts toward liquid biopsy, diagnosis using miRNAs is more relevant in blood cancers than in solid tumors. We also lay forward the diagnostic significance of miRNAs that are indicative of subtype, progression, severity, therapy response, and relapse. This review discusses the potential use and the role of miRNAs, miRNA signatures, or classifiers in the diagnosis of major groups of T-cell malignancies like T-cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-ALL), peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTCL), and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). We aimed to investigate the association between hearing loss and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and whether the relationship could be modified by chronic conditions in middle-aged and older Chinese adults. We selected 18,625 participants who underwent audiometry in 2013 from the Dongfeng-Tongji Cohort conducted in China, and followed them until December 2018. Hearing loss was grouped as normal, mild, and moderate or severe by pure-tone hearing threshold at speech (0.5, 1, and 2 kHz) and high frequency (4 and 8 kHz). We applied Cox regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and CVD mortality. Among the 18,625 participants, the mean age was 64.6 (range: 36.7–93.0) years, and 56.2% were women. A total of 1185 died, with 420 CVD deaths during a mean follow-up period of 5.5 years. The adjusted HR for all-cause and CVD mortality increased gradually with the increasing hearing threshold (All p for trend < 0.05). Compared to participants with normal hearing at speech frequency, the adjusted HRs (95% CIs) of moderate or severe hearing loss were 1.42 (1.21–1.67), 1.44 (1.10–1.89), and 1.92 (1.21–3.04) for all-cause, CVD, and stroke mortality, respectively. While moderate or severe hearing loss at high frequency was only related to an increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.18–2.17). The associations were generally consistent across subgroups (All p for interaction > 0.05). Additionally, individuals with a combination of moderate or severe hearing loss and occupational noise exposure, diabetes, or hypertension had higher risk of all-cause or CVD mortality, ranging from 1.45 to 2.78. In conclusion, hearing loss was independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause and CVD mortality, in a dose–response manner. Objectives: Social determinants of health (SDH) are nonmedical, societal factors that influence health. There is limited information on the current relationship between SDH and hearing loss (HL) in the United States. This study aims to compare the odds of HL among US adults by race/ethnicity, education level, income-to-poverty level ratio, health insurance coverage, and health care access., Study Design: Cross-sectional study., Methods: The 2015-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data were analyzed to compare odds ratios (ORs) for HL, defined as pure tone average over 25 dB HL in at least one ear, by SDH categories using sample weights. Adjusted ORs were calculated using logistic regression models controlling for sex, age, race/ethnicity, education level, income-to-federal-poverty level, health care insurance coverage and access, and loud noise, pesticide, and cigarette exposure., Results: A total of 6028 participants were included. Non-Hispanic Black participants had half the odds of HL as Non-Hispanic White participants (OR 0.52, p < 0.05). Lower education level correlated with higher odds of HL: those without a high school diploma had double the odds of HL compared with college graduates or above (OR 2.05, 1.91, p < 0.05). The income-to-federal-poverty level ratio of 1.3 to less than 2 had higher odds of HL than the 4+ group (OR 1.45, p < 0.05). Use of multiple health care locations was associated with nearly three times the odds of HL than the group using one location (OR 2.87, p < 0.05)., Conclusion: SDH are associated with HL. To expose all undergraduate science students to the benefits of participating in research, many universities are integrating course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) into their introductory biology laboratory curriculum. At large institutions, the bulk of introductory labs are instructed by graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). Graduate students, who are often teachers and researchers in training, may vary in their capacity to effectively teach undergraduates via the CURE model. To explore variation in GTA teaching and the subsequent outcomes for students, we used a case study research design at one institution where introductory biology students participate in GTA-taught CURE lab sections. We used multiple data sources, including in-class focus groups, worksheets, and surveys to explore student perceptions of the GTA-led CURE. Students perceived variation both in the ability of their GTAs to create a supportive and comfortable learning environment, and in the instructional priorities of their GTAs. We also compared student and GTA perspectives of student engagement with research elements in the CURE. While GTAs were divided in their perceptions of whether the CURE provided students with the opportunity to experience the element of relevant discovery, most students—regardless of their GTA—did not perceive that relevant discovery was emphasized in the CURE. Finally, individual GTAs seemed to influence how students perceived why they were participating in the CURE. These data imply that students in CUREs may have vastly different and potentially inequitable research experiences depending on their instructor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The crisis facing Africa's elephant populations is a notorious example of ongoing wildlife declines caused by illegal harvesting. Targeted conservation interventions require detailed knowledge about changes in population sizes and the effect of illegal activities. However, accurately quantifying poaching intensity is a difficult task: commonly calculated from ranger‐based carcass‐encounter data, the proportion of illegally killed elephants (PIKE) is a function of poaching and background mortality. Hence, at constant poaching intensity, PIKE decreases with increasing natural mortality and also with hunting, management interventions, and other anthropogenically induced deaths. Natural mortality is often more difficult to quantify with accuracy than mortality due to illegal killing, as elephants that die naturally are more likely to be missed than those taken by poachers. In recent analyses, constant background mortality rates were assumed. Yet, for example climate‐driven fluctuations in natural mortality, if not quantified and accounted for, may lead to biased estimates of poaching intensity.Varying background mortality rates can be accounted for in the analysis of PIKE, but this requires near‐complete counts of natural and management‐related deaths and hunting records. Carefully developed population models, which simulate population dynamics and demographic changes while accounting for variation in environmental conditions and management strategies, are alternatives. However, successful calibration of such models requires integrating comprehensive demographic data.We systematically review the scientific and 'grey' literature on African elephant demography with the objective of facilitating poaching and population analysis possibilities through an inventory of information relevant to demography.Our screening of 10900 publications resulted in the review of relevant information provided by 431 studies from 420 study sites throughout Africa. From these, we extracted demographic data collected between 1900 and 2017, and collated them in the newly created African Elephant Demographic Database (AEDD; 10.6084/m9.figshare.19387085). We found 37 natural mortality estimates from five different study sites. Other mortality data, demographic rates, and age‐ and sex‐structured population data were substantially more abundant, both temporally and spatially.This new collection of demographic rates, age‐ and sex‐structured population data, and cause‐partitioned mortality estimates identifies spatial and temporal data gaps and provides prior information needed for African elephant population models. Introduction: Hypertension is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and has been associated with target organ damage. Effects of hypertension on the auditory system are varied and requires further investigation. This study aimed to investigate the association between hypertension and auditory deficits (hearing loss and tinnitus). Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional study including 106 (54.7% female) hypertensive adults aged 18–55 years, and 92 (52.2% female) non-hypertensive sex- and age-matched adults residing in South Africa. A data extraction sheet was used to obtain hypertension information from participants' medical files, and to subjectively obtain tinnitus status and characteristics among participants. Participants' hearing sensitivity—including extended high frequencies (EHF)—were measured using a diagnostic audiometer. The χ2 test determined the difference in auditory deficit prevalence between the study groups. Logistic regression was used to identify predictor variables associated with auditory deficits in the hypertensive group. Results: A hearing loss prevalence of 37.4% among hypertensive adults compared to 14.1% among the non-hypertensive group (P = 0.000, χ2 = 14.00) was found. The EHF pure-tone average among the hypertensive group was 44.1 ± 19.2 dB HL, and 20.0 ± 18.3 dB HL among the control group. Bilateral mild sensorineural hearing loss was the most common type of hearing loss among hypertensive adults. A higher prevalence of tinnitus (41.5%) was found in the hypertensive group compared to the control group (22.8%) (P = 0.008, χ2 = 7.09). In this study, 30.3% of hypertensive adults had tinnitus without hearing loss compared to 17.7% non-hypertensive adults. Factors associated with hearing loss included being between 50 and 55 years [adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 3.35; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.32–8.50; P = 0.011], having grade 2 hypertension (AOR = 4.18; 95% CI: 1.02–17.10; P = 0.048), and being on antihypertensive medication (AOR = 3.18; 95% CI: 1.02–9.87; P = 0.045). Tinnitus was associated with grade 3 hypertension (AOR = 3.90; 95% CI: 1.12–12.64; P = 0.033). Conclusions: Our study showed that hypertensive adults had a higher proportion of hearing loss and tinnitus compared to non-hypertensive adults. Findings suggest an association between hypertension and auditory deficits, demonstrating a need for integration of hearing healthcare services for hypertension management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rewarding properties of social interactions facilitate relationship formation and maintenance. Prairie voles are one of the few laboratory species that form selective relationships, manifested as "partner preferences" for familiar partners versus strangers. While both sexes exhibit strong partner preferences, this similarity in outward behavior likely results from sex‐specific neurobiological mechanisms. We recently demonstrated that in operant trials, females worked hardest for access to familiar conspecifics of either sex, while males worked equally hard for access to any female, indicating a sex difference in social motivation. As tests were performed with one social target at a time, males might have experienced a ceiling effect, and familiar females might be more relatively rewarding in a choice scenario. Here we performed an operant social choice task in which voles lever‐pressed to gain temporary access to either the chamber containing their mate or one containing a novel opposite‐sex vole. Females worked hardest to access their mate, while males pressed at similar rates for either female. Individual male behavior was heterogeneous, congruent with multiple mating strategies in the wild. Voles exhibited preferences for favorable over unfavorable environments in a non‐social operant task, indicating that lack of social preference does not reflect lack of discrimination. Natural variation in oxytocin receptor genotype at the intronic single nucleotide polymorphism NT213739 was associated with oxytocin receptor density, and predicted individual variation in stranger‐directed aggressive behavior. These findings suggest that convergent preference behavior in male and female voles results from sex‐divergent pathways, particularly in the realm of social motivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
