We present a summary of the results of the OJ 287 observational campaign, which was carried out during the 2021/2022 observational season. This season is special in the binary model because the major axis of the precessing binary happens to lie almost exactly in the plane of the accretion disc of the primary. This leads to pairs of almost identical impacts between the secondary black hole and the accretion disk in 2005 and 2022. In 2005, a special flare called "blue flash" was observed 35 days after the disk impact, which should have also been verifiable in 2022. We did observe a similar flash and were able to obtain more details of its properties. We describe this in the framework of expanding cloud models. In addition, we were able to identify the flare arising exactly at the time of the disc crossing from its photo-polarimetric and gamma-ray properties. This is an important identification, as it directly confirms the orbit model. Moreover, we saw a huge flare that lasted only one day. We may understand this as the lighting up of the jet of the secondary black hole when its Roche lobe is suddenly flooded by the gas from the primary disk. Therefore, this may be the first time we directly observed the secondary black hole in the OJ 287 binary system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Time variation in impact probability is studied by assuming that the periodic flux of the Oort Cloud comets within 15 au arises from the motion of the Sun with respect to the Galactic mid-plane. The periodic flux clearly shows up in the impact rate of the captured Oort Cloud cometary population, with a phase shift caused by the orbital evolution. Depending on the assumed flux of comets and the size distribution of comets, the impact rate of the Oort Cloud comets of 1 km in diameter or greater is from 5 to 700 impacts Myr[sup -1] on the Earth and from 0.5 to 70 impacts per 1000 yr on Jupiter. The relative fractions of impacts are 0.09, 0.11, 0.26 and 0.54 for long-period comets, Halley type comets, Jupiter family comets and near-Earth objects, respectively. For Jupiter, the corresponding fractions in the first three categories are 0.18, 0.31 and 0.51. If we consider physical fading of comet activity that is compatible with the observations, then the impact rates of active comets are two orders of magnitude smaller than the total impact rates by all kinds of comets and cometary asteroids of size 1 km or greater. An ensemble of Newtonian three-body models with close initial separations is investigated by following the evolution of a ‘drop’ in the homology map. The onset of chaos is revealed by the motion and the complex temporal deformation of the drop. In the state of advanced chaos, the drop spreads over almost the whole homology map, quite independently of its initial position on the map. A general quantitative measure of this process is the mean exponential rate of spreading, which bears resemblance to Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy; this is introduced and estimated in terms of the homology mapping. In a similar manner we also estimate the mean exponential rate of divergence of initially close-by trajectories. This is a close analogue to the Lyapunov exponent. These parameters measure two complementary aspects of dynamical instability, which is the basic mechanism of the onset of chaos. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the identification of an extremely rare and peculiar set of irregular radio sources, termed "STROMERSs" (STRange and Odd Morphology Extragalactic Radio Sources).ingThe irregular radio sources with very anomalous morphologies that make them exceptionally different from all the known classes and subclasses of irregular radio sources are detected as STROMERSs. A thorough search for this class of sources from the Very Large Array (VLA) Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) gave a total of nine such candidates. We checked the corresponding morphology of the identified sources in other frequency surveys. We found a detectable radio emission for all of the nine sources in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) at 1.4 GHz and in the TIFR GMRT Sky Survey (TGSS) at 150 MHz, while the same was found for only three sources in the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS) at 625 MHz. However, the strange morphology was not found in all of those other survey images. We also characterized the sources with their corresponding physical parameters like optical counterpart, size, spectral index, and radio luminosity. ingThe estimated spectral values of the sources indicated that the STROMERSs were most likely radio galaxies. The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) promises revolutionary science in the X-ray and multi-messenger time domain. AXIS will leverage excellent spatial resolution (<1.5 arcsec), sensitivity ( 80 × that of Swift), and a large collecting area (5–10× that of Chandra) across a 24-arcmin diameter field of view at soft X-ray energies (0.3–10.0 keV) to discover and characterize a wide range of X-ray transients from supernova-shock breakouts to tidal disruption events to highly variable supermassive black holes. The observatory's ability to localize and monitor faint X-ray sources opens up new opportunities to hunt for counterparts to distant binary neutron star mergers, fast radio bursts, and exotic phenomena like fast X-ray transients. AXIS will offer a response time of <2 h to community alerts, enabling studies of gravitational wave sources, high-energy neutrino emitters, X-ray binaries, magnetars, and other targets of opportunity. This white paper highlights some of the discovery science that will be driven by AXIS in this burgeoning field of time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. The BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object OJ 287 underwent an intense X-ray activity phase, exhibiting its brightest recorded X-ray flare in 2016–2017, characterized by much softer X-ray spectra and, concurrently, its first-ever recorded very-high-energy (VHE) emission (100–560 GeV), reported by the VERITAS observatory. Broadband spectral energy distribution reveals a new jet emission component similar to high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac objects, thereby implying the soft X-ray spectrum for the synchrotron emission. Using the advantage of simultaneous X-ray and VHE spectral information, as well as the source being a low-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object, we systematically explored the extragalactic background light (EBL) spectrum by demanding that the VHE spectrum cannot be harder than the X-ray spectrum. We used three different phenomenological forms of the EBL spectral shape (power-law, parabola, and polynomial) motivated by current constraints on the EBL with the Bayesian Monte Carlo approach to infer the credible EBL range. Our study favors an almost flat power-law spectral shape and is consistent with previous studies. The other spectral forms capable of capturing curvature though result in a better statistics value; the improvement is statistically insignificant given the additional parameters. The quasar 3C 286, a well-known calibrator source in radio astronomy, was found to exhibit exceptional multiwavelength properties. Its rich and complex optical emission-line spectrum revealed its narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) nature. Given its strong radio emission, this makes 3C 286 one of the radio-loudest NLS1 galaxies known to date. 3C 286 is also one of very few known compact steep-spectrum (CSS) sources detected in the gamma-ray regime. Observations in the X-ray regime, rarely carried out so far, revealed evidence for variability, raising the question whether it is driven by the accretion disk or jet. 3C 286 is also well known for its damped Lyman alpha system from an intervening absorber at z = 0.692, triggering a search for the corresponding X-ray absorption along the line-of-sight. Here, we present new observations in the radio, X-ray, optical, and UV bands. The nature of the X-ray variability is addressed. Spectral evidence suggests that it is primarily driven by the accretion disk (not the jet), and the X-ray spectrum is well fit by a powerlaw plus soft excess model. The radio flux density and polarization remain constant at the Effelsberg telescope resolution, reconfirming the use of 3C 286 as radio calibrator. The amount of reddening/absorption along the line-of-sight intrinsic to 3C 286 is rigorously assessed. None is found, validating the derivation of a high Eddington ratio ( L / L Edd ∼ 1) and of the very high radio-loudness index of 3C 286. Based on the first deep Chandra image of 3C 286, tentative evidence for hard X-ray emission from the SW radio lobe is reported. We report the results of time series analysis of blazar PKS 1440-389, observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in two sectors. We find that the source has a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of about 3.1 days for sector 11 and around 3.7 days for sector 38 in the optical band. We use two methods to assess the QPO and its confidence level: Lomb–Scargle periodogram and weighted wavelet Z-transforms. We explore various potential explanations for these rapid quasi-periodic variations and propose that their source most likely resides within the innermost region of the accretion disk. Within this framework, we estimate the mass of the central black hole of this blazar. We obtain black hole masses of 6.65 × 108 M ⊙ (Schwarzschild black hole) and 4.22 × 109 M ⊙ (maximally rotating Kerr black hole), with a main period of 3.7 days. We present an analysis showcasing how the Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS), a proposed NASA Probe-class mission, will significantly increase our understanding of supermassive black holes undergoing mergers—from kpc to sub-pc scales. In particular, the AXIS point spread function, field of view, and effective area are expected to result in (1) the detection of hundreds to thousands of new dual AGNs across the redshift range 0 < z < 5 and (2) blind searches for binary AGNs that are exhibiting merger signatures in their light curves and spectra. AXIS will detect some of the highest-redshift dual AGNs to date, over a large range of physical separations. The large sample of AGN pairs detected by AXIS (over a magnitude more than currently known) will result in the first X-ray study that quantifies the frequency of dual AGNs as a function of redshift up to z = 4 . Using multifrequency observations, from radio to γ -rays of the blazar Mrk 501, we constructed their corresponding light curves and built periodograms using RobPer and Lomb–Scargle algorithms. Long-term variability was also studied using the power density spectrum and the detrended function analysis. Using the software VARTOOLS Version 1.40, we also computed the analysis of variance, box-least squares and discrete fourier transform. The result of these techniques showed an achromatic periodicity ≲ 229 d . This, combined with the result of pink-color noise in the spectra, led us to propose that the periodicity was produced via a secondary eclipsing supermassive binary black hole orbiting the primary one locked inside the central engine of Mrk 501. We built a relativistic eclipsing model of this phenomenon using Jacobi elliptical functions, finding a periodic relativistic eclipse occurring every ∼ 224 d in all the studied wavebands. This implies that the frequency of the emitted gravitational waves falls slightly above 0.1 mHz, well within the operational range of the upcoming LISA space-based interferometer, and as such, these gravitational waves must be considered as a prime science target for future LISA observations. In this work, we search for observational evidence of higher-order secular perturbations in three eclipsing binaries. These are slightly eccentric binaries, and they form the inner pairs of tight, compact, hierarchical triple star systems. Simultaneously, we analyze the high-precision satellite (Kepler and TESS) light curves; eclipse timing variations; combined spectral energy distributions (through catalog passband magnitudes); and, where available, radial velocities of KICs 9714358, 5771589, and TIC 219885468. Besides the determination of the robust astrophysical and dynamical properties of the three systems, we find evidence that the observed unusual eclipse timing variations of KIC 9714358 are a direct consequence of the octupole-order secular eccentricity perturbations forced by unusual, resonant behavior between the lines of the apsides of the inner and outer orbital ellipses. We also show that, despite its evident cyclic eclipse depth variations, KIC 5771589 is an almost perfectly coplanar system (to within 0. 3 ∘ ), and we explain the rapid eclipse depth variations with the grazing nature of the eclipses. Finally, we find that the inner pair of TIC 219885468 consists of two twin stars; hence, in this triple there are no octupole-order three-body perturbations. Moreover, we show that this triple is also coplanar on the same level as the former one, but due to its deep eclipses, it does not exhibit eclipse depth variations. We report the detection of a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the optical R -band light curve of the blazar S5 0716+714 spanning approximately 32 years. Using both the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform and Lomb-Scargle Periodogram methods, we identified a prominent QPO of 1060 ± 50 days at a 5 σ confidence level against the red noise background. Our findings align well with previous studies. We introduce a supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) model to account for the observed QPO and estimate the binary system's Keplerian orbit to be 0.0053 parsec, indicating S5 0716+714 as a notable subject for upcoming nanohertz gravitational wave studies. The data from the last 60 years on the programs of long-term multi-frequency monitoring of active galactic nucleus (AGN) 3C 273 were analyzed. A model is proposed for finding the parameters of close binary systems (CBSs) from supermassive black holes (SMBHs), including a harmonic analysis of observational data series obtained in the optical and radio ranges. The purpose of this research was to show that in the absence of optical information on AGNs, only radio data can be used and the necessary information on the physical objects can be obtained. Regarding the example of the blazar 3C 273, the following parameters were obtained: the masses of the companions; their orbital characteristics, such as the speeds of movement in orbits; the reserves of the kinetic energy of the system; and others. It was found that AGN 3C 273 can be a very massive binary system at the stage of evolution close to merging. Based on the obtained parameters, the characteristics of the gravitational waves (GWs) of this system, its lifetime before the merger, and the possible observation of 3C 273 using gravitational wave detectors were considered. We are carrying out the densest and longest multiyear, multiwavelength monitoring project of OJ 287 ever done. The project MOMO (Multiwavelength Observations and Modeling of OJ 287) covers wavelengths from the radio to the high‐energy regime. A few selected observations are simultaneous with those of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). MOMO aims at understanding disk‐jet physics and at testing predictions of the binary black hole scenario of OJ 287. Here, we present a discussion of extreme outburst and minima states in context, and then focus on the recent flux and spectral evolution between 2021 and May 2022, including an ongoing bright radio flare. Further, we show that there is no evidence for precursor flare activity in our optical–UV–X‐ray light curves that would be associated with any secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) disk impact and that was predicted to start as thermal flare on December 23, 2021. We examine the dynamics of particles around a rotating regular black hole. In particular we focus on the effects of the characteristic length parameter of the spinning black hole on the motion of the particles by solving the equation of orbital motion. We have found that there is a fourth constant of motion that determines the dynamics of orbits out the equatorial plane similar as in the Kerr black hole. Through detailed analyses of the corresponding effective potentials for massive particles the possible orbits are numerically simulated. A comparison with the trajectories in a Kerr spacetime shows that the differences appear when the black holes rotate slowly for large values of the characteristic length parameter. The next-generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) will provide us with the best opportunity to investigate supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the highest possible resolution and sensitivity. With respect to the existing Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array, the ngEHT will provide increased sensitivity and uv-coverage (with the addition of new stations), wider frequency coverage (from 86 GHz to 345 GHz and higher), finer resolution (<15 micro-arcseconds), and better monitoring capabilities. The ngEHT will offer a unique opportunity to deeply investigate the physics around SMBHs, such as the disk-jet connection, the mechanisms responsible for high-energy photon and neutrino events, and the role of magnetic fields in shaping relativistic jets, as well as the nature of binary SMBH systems. The observation of celestial light variation data is discontinuous and uneven in the time domain due to weather, equipment, and other factors. And the discontinuous observation data introduce a significant error in the study of the varying light periods. This paper combines the newly developed local mean decomposition(LMD) method and the Lomb–Scargle (LS) algorithm, the most widely used period estimation algorithm for non-uniform time series; a method for analizing the optical variable period of quasars based on the LMD and the LS algorithm is proposed. The principle and the application steps of the method were discussed. The observation data for OJ 287 and 3C 345 at 4.8, 8.0, and 14.5 GHz (radio bands) were collected and analyzed from the University of Michigan UMRAO database. For OJ 287, periods of 12 ± 0.3, 5 ± 0.65, and 2.4 ± 0.01 yr are found in all three bands. There also exist periods of 11 ± 0.9, 5 ± 0.31, and 3 ± 0.28 yr in the three bands for 3C 345. These periods agree with the results of the methods commonly used in some literature. At the same time, some other possible periods are also obtained that can provide references for further research. Results show that estimating the power spectrum is feasible based on LMD+Lomb–Scargle, which provides a new idea for the photoperiod analysis of quasars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Onsala twin telescopes (OTT) are two 13 m telescopes located at the Onsala Space Observatory in Sweden. With dual linear polarized broad-band (3-14 GHz) receivers, they are part of the next generation Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Global Observing System (VGOS) for geodesy and astrometry. In addition to purely geodetic data products, VGOS will regularly produce full-polarisation images of hundreds of radio sources. These rich monitoring data will be valuable for both astronomy and geodesy. In this pilot study we aimed at monitoring ten bright radio sources to search for flares or similar activity, and at testing the instrument calibration on long (months) and short (hours) time scales. Using the OTT as a standalone instrument, we observed and analysed 91 short (<30 min) sessions spanning seven months. We monitored seven potentially variable radio sources (0059+581, 0552+398, 1144+402, 1156+295, 1617+229, 3C418, OJ287) and three reference calibrators (3C147, 3C286, 3C295). We used the Common Astronomy Software Applications (CASA) package to fringe-fit, bandpass-correct and scale the data to obtain flux densities in the four standard VGOS bands: 3.0-3.5 GHz (band 1), 5.2-5.7 GHz (band 2), 6.3-6.8 GHz (band 3), and 10.2-10.7 GHz (band 4). We obtained simultaneous multi-frequency light curves for ten radio sources. A bright multi-frequency flare is observed in the radio source 0059+581. OJ287 and 1156+295 show significant long-term variability in their light curves. After correcting for instrumental biases, we determine the empirical flux density uncertainty as ∼ 5 %. We model the binary black hole system OJ287 as a spinning primary and anon-spinning secondary. It is assumed that the primary has an accretion diskwhich is impactedby the secondary at specific times. These times are identified as major outbursts in the lightcurve of OJ287. This identification allows an exact solution of the orbit, with very tight errorlimits. Nine outbursts from both the historical photographic records as well as from recentphotometric measurements have been used as fixed points of the solution: 1913, 1947, 1957,1973, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2005 and 2007 outbursts. This allows the determination of eightparameters of the orbit. Most interesting of these are the primary mass of 1.84 · 1010M⊙, the secondary mass 1.40 · 108M⊙, major axis precession rate 39°.1 per period, and the eccentricity of the orbit 0.70. The dimensionless spin parameter is 0.28 ± 0.01 (1 sigma). Thelast parameter will be more tightly constrained in 2015 when the next outburst is due. Theoutburst should begin on 15 December 2015 if the spin value is in the middle of this range,on 3 January 2016 if the spin is 0.25, and on 26 November 2015 if the spin is 0.31. Wehave also tested the possibility that the quadrupole term in the post-Newtonian equations ofmotion does not exactly follow Einstein's theory: a parameter q is introduced as one of the8 parameters. Its value is within 30% (1 sigma) of the Einstein's value q = 1. This supportsthe no-hair theorem of black holes within the achievable precision. We have also measuredthe loss of orbital energy due to gravitational waves. The loss rate is found to agree withEinstein's value with the accuracy of 2% (1 sigma). There is a possibility of improving theaccuracy of both quantities using the exact timing of the outburst on 21 July 2019. Successful observations of the seven predicted bremsstrahlung flares from the unique bright blazar OJ 287 firmly point to the presence of a nanohertz gravitational wave (GW) emitting supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary central engine. We present arguments for the continued monitoring of the source in several electromagnetic windows to firmly establish various details of the SMBH binary central engine description for OJ 287. In this article, we explore what more can be known about this system, particularly with regard to accretion and outflows from its two accretion disks. We mainly concentrate on the expected impact of the secondary black hole on the disk of the primary on 3 December 2021 and the resulting electromagnetic signals in the following years. We also predict the times of exceptional fades, and outline their usefulness in the study of the host galaxy. A spectral survey has been carried out, and spectral lines from the secondary were searched for but were not found. The jet of the secondary has been studied and proposals to discover it in future VLBI observations are mentioned. In conclusion, the binary black hole model explains a large number of observations of different kinds in OJ 287. Carefully timed future observations will be able to provide further details of its central engine. Such multi-wavelength and multidisciplinary efforts will be required to pursue multi-messenger nanohertz GW astronomy with OJ 287 in the coming decades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have assembled historical light curve data of the BL Lac object 4FGL J0112.1+2245 at radio, optical and γ -ray bands, spanning about a 12.5, 8.4, and 11.9 yr period, respectively. We used the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP), Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ) and epoch folding methods to search for periodicity in the light curves. The results indicate that there is a possible quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of 896 ± 32 days for γ -rays, 880 ± 54 days in the optical, and 830 ± 33 days in the radio band, respectively. In addition, the QPO signals evaluated by employing a red noise model were found to be above 3 σ (99.7%) in the three bands. Assuming that it originates from a jet in helical motion in a supermassive binary black hole system undergoing a merger, we estimate the primary black hole mass M ≃ 2.2 × 10 9 M ⊙ . Using the discrete correlation function (DCF) method, we investigated the correlation among multi-wavelength bands, and found that there is a significant correlation between the different bands from MJD 57670 to 59000. The results indicated that the optical flux in this source is originating from the same or vicinal emission region as the γ -ray and show a time lag of 73 days with radio band. Across the data as a whole, the DCF results show that the optical correlation with radio and γ -ray is significant, while the correlation between the γ -ray and radio bands are weak. BL Lacs are one subclass of blazars with highly energetic γ -ray emission, which is strongly boosted by a relativistic beaming effect. The latest catalogue of the 10 years of Fermi/LAT data (Abdollahi et al. 2020) and the γ -ray Doppler factors in Pei et al. (2020) provide us with a large BL Lac sample to study their jet emission morphologies and intrinsic properties. In this paper, we collected a sample of 294 Fermi BL Lacs and probed the correlations between the γ -ray emissions and luminosity distances. Our analyses give following conclusions: (1) the observed γ -ray emissions are really boosted by the γ -ray Doppler factor, and the intrinsic γ -ray emissions are closely correlated with luminosity distances. (2) the morphology of jet emissions for HBLs may be continuous, while that for IBLs may be the case of a moving sphere in the γ -ray bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Higher order corrections are obtained for the perihelion precession in binary systems like OJ 287, Sagittarius A*-S2 and H1821+643 using both the Schwarzschild metric and the Kerr metric to take into account the spin effect. The corrections are performed considering the third root of the motion equation and developing the expansion in terms of parameters related to each other and depending on orbit variables. Virial masses within some radius in a galaxy system tend to undervalue the true total mass. Here, we quantify this effect for the standard mass M(r200) up to the radius within which the mean density is 200ρcrit. We derive the masses up to the zero‐gravity radius rmax, for a few common density profile laws: the isothermal, the Hernquist, and the Navarro–Frenk–White profiles, relative to the mass M(r200). Graphs show how much mass could be missed at different radii, which can be a few M(r200) up to the zero‐gravity radius rmax. One result is that less‐concentrated halos can be larger and more massive up to rmax, relative to M(r200). These data are useful for applications involving masses of galaxy systems and haloes. We have examined statistically, structural asymmetries and simple relativistic beaming/source orientation in a sample of Lobe-Dominated Quasars (LDQs) using the source size D as orientation parameter; relative core strength R as beaming parameter; arm-length ratio Q, apparent flux ratio R, and bending angle Φ as asymmetric parameters. Our result for Q>1.5, based on the median value data is inconsistent with beaming scenario, where we expect stronger negative correlation for more asymmetric sources, between our beaming parameter R and orientation parameter D than for less asymmetric sources Q≤1.5. This observation indicates that structural asymmetries may depend more on intrinsic factors than beaming. Our kinematic asymmetric model of extra galactic radio sources suggests that larger (possibly older) sources are less asymmetric, which may be interpreted to be indicative of other factors other than beaming as responsible for the observed asymmetries in radio sources. The discovery of magnetic spherules in acid-insoluble residues from conodont samples encouraged a systematic search for Ordovician micrometeorites from northwestern Argentina. Some 220 melted micrometeorites were recovered from the magnetic fraction of six samples (total rock weight: 23 kg) from the Cordillera Oriental (Santa Rosita Formation) and 17 from five samples (total rock weight: 8.9 kg) from the Argentine Precordillera (Las Aguaditas, Gualcamayo and Las Vacas formations). The specimens resemble I-type cosmic spherules, in their chemistry and distinct dendritic and polygonal crystalline structures. They represent a flux of micrometeorites several orders of magnitude greater than present. The wide differences in spherule abundance between the Precordillera and the Cordillera Oriental samples could reflect uncertainties in the sedimentary rates or temporal variations in the flux of extraterrestrial matter to Earth. The micrometeorite-bearing formations span the late Tremadocian to the late Darriliwian (~480-460 Ma), which is consistent with a period of elevated flux of extraterrestrial material, as recorded several thousand kilometres away from coeval horizons in Scotland, Sweden and central China. The 3+1 formalism of Thorne, Price and MacDonald has been used to derive the linear two-fluid equations describing transverse and longitudinal waves propagating in the two-fluid ideal collisionless plasmas surrounding a Schwarzschild black hole. The plasma is assumed to be falling in radial direction toward the event horizon. The relativistic two-fluid equations have been reformulate, in analogy with the special relativistic formulation as explained in an earlier paper, to take account of relativistic effects due to the event horizon.
