18. Variation in Illinois bundleflower (Desmanthus illinoensis (Michaux) MacMillan): A potential perennial grain legume.

Abstract

Illinois bundleflower, Desmanthus illinoensis (Michaux) MacMillan, is an herbaceous perennial legume native to the central and southeastern USA. It has been identified as a potential perennial grain legume. To describe variation among natural populations for agriculturally desirable characteristics, 141 accessions of D. illinoensis and one of D. leptolobus were evaluated in common garden plantings established in 1988 and 1990. Characteristics showing diversity among populations included seed yield, plant height, growth habit, days to maturity, 100 seed weight, and shatter resistance. Eight characteristics were analyzed by principal components and cluster analysis. The resulting four clusters accounted for 56% of the variation among accessions. One cluster was distinctive in having plants with vigorous, prostrate first year growth, poor winter hardiness, and large seed. Three accessions also had indehiscent legumes useful for breeding shatter resistance. There appears to be sufficient variation to support genetic improvement of agricultural characteristics of Illinois bundleflower. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Preclinical trial of doxorubicin entrapped in sterically stabilized liposomes in dogs with spontaneously arising malignant tumors.

Abstract

Purpose: To prospectively evaluate the short-term toxicoses associated with pegylated-liposomal doxorubicin (Doxil) administered to dogs with measurable tumors of various histologic types and sites. Preliminary information regarding efficacy was also generated. Methods: A group of 51 dogs with histologically confirmed malignancies received a total of 103 Doxil treatments given i.v. every 3 weeks at dosages ranging from 0.75 to 1.1 mg/kg in the context of a phase I dose-escalation trial. Acute and short-term toxicities as well as tumor response and duration of response were characterized. Results: The maximally tolerated dose in tumor-bearing dogs was established as 1.0 mg/kg i.v. every 3 weeks. The dose-limiting toxicity was a cutaneous toxicity clinically resembling palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPES). An overall response rate of 25.5% was observed with five complete responders and eight partial responders. Conclusions: Doxil appeared to be well tolerated at dosages similar to those tolerated for free doxorubicin in tumor-bearing dogs. PPES was the dose-limiting toxicity encountered, rather than myelosuppresion as is the case with free doxorubicin in dogs. In Boundaries of Care, Ryan I. Logan details the lived experience of community health workers (CHWs) – a present yet often invisible facet of the healthcare workforce. These workers participate in nonclinical services to enhance the health and well-being of their communities outside the walls of the clinic and social service agencies. Logan examines the boundaries of and barriers to care present in the experiences of CHWs, their relationships with clients, issues of professionalization, impacts of burnout and self-care, and the critical impacts of CHW advocacy. The Empire Ranch sits in the heart of the rolling grasslands and oak-studded foothills of Las Cienegas National Conservation Area in southeastern Arizona. Its remarkable history and the ranching way of life are told through the stories of the men, women, and children of the Empire, most notably the Vail, Boice, and Donaldson families. Walter L. Vail and Herbert R. Hislop purchased the Empire Ranch homestead for $2,000 in 1876. The Vail family operated the ranch until 1928, turning it into a cattle ranching empire. From 1928 to 1975, the well-respected Boice family ran a vibrant Hereford operation on the Empire. The Donaldson family used innovative range management methods to continue the ranching legacy from 1975 to 2009. Today, the ranch, under the management of the Bureau of Land Management, remains one of the oldest continuously working cattle ranches in the region.
