1. Generalized wave-particle-Mixdness triality for n-path interferometers

Abstract

The wave-particle duality, as one of the expressions of Bohr complementarity, is usually quantified by path predictability and the visibility of interference fringes. With the development of quantum resource theory, the quantitative analysis of wave-particle duality is increasing, most of which are expressed in the form of specific functions. In this paper, we obtain the path information measure for pure states by converting the coherence measure for pure state into a symmetric concave function. Then we prove the function as a path information measure is also valid for mixed states. Furthermore, we also establish a generalized wave-particle-mixedness traility. Although the mixedness proposed in the text is not a complete mixedness measure, it also satisfies some conditions of mixdness measure. From the perspective of resource theory, the path information we establish can be used as the measure of the resource of predictability, and the triaility relationship we establish reveals the relationship among coherence, predictability, purity and mixdness degree to a certain extent. According to our method, given either coherence measure or path information, a particular form of wave-particle-mixedness traility can be established. Abstract

We construct a many-body theory of magneto-elasticity in one dimension and show that the dynamical correlation functions of the quantum magnet, connecting the spins with phonons, involve all energy scales. Accounting for all magnetic states non-perturbatively via the exact diagonalisation techniques of Bethe ansatz, we find that the renormalisation of the phonon velocity is a non-monotonous function of the external magnetic field and identify a new mechanism for attenuation of phonons - via hybridisation with the continuum of excitations at high energy. We conduct ultrasonic measurements on a high-quality single crystal of the frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet $\textrm{Cs}_{2}\textrm{CuCl}_{4}$ in its one-dimensional regime and confirm the theoretical predictions, demonstrating that ultrasound can be used as a powerful probe of strong correlations in one dimension., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Abstract Cutaneous manifestations are variable in patients with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). We report a case where bullous eruption was a presenting manifestation of EGPA. A 55‐year‐old Chinese man with a background of adult‐onset asthma and chronic sinusitis was admitted for a 3‐week history of lower limb weakness and a large bulla on his right calf with surrounding erythema. Skin biopsy showed a subepidermal blister with significant dermal eosinophilia, without vasculitis. The patient was diagnosed with EGPA with systemic involvement on the basis of a thorough medical history, eosinophilia, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging showing acute myocarditis, and nerve biopsy with eosinophilic vasculitic neuropathy. He responded well to corticosteroids and rituximab. Nonvasculitic bullous eruptions are rarely described as manifestations of EGPA. Prompt recognition of this entity is crucial for its early diagnosis.

Abstract

Flux pinning scaling laws were developed to explain the observed increase in the critical current density Jc caused by increased density of grain boundaries in polycrystalline low temperature superconductors (LTS) such as Nb3Sn. For four decades they have provided the framework for the successful development of the LTS materials that carry high Jc in high magnetic fields. However, the discovery of the weak-link problem suggested that transmission of supercurrent flow through the grain boundaries limited Jc in high temperature superconductors (HTS) such as YBa2Cu3O7-{\delta} (YBCO). Here we provide evidence that a single mechanism - flux flow along grain boundaries - confirmed by time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) computational visualisation in LTS materials, explains the functional form of Jc in polycrystalline LTS Nb3Sn and HTS YBCO and (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Can-1CunOx (BiSCCO) materials in low and high magnetic fields. Data presented show that standard flux pinning theory cannot explain comprehensive Jc data for YBCO because Jc is a function of strain but the superconducting properties are not. We conclude that grain boundaries are narrow and metallic in Nb3Sn and YBCO but wide and semiconducting in BiSCCO. 6. Short-chain fatty acids in viral infection: the underlying mechanisms, opportunities, and challenges.

Viral infections can cause cellular pathway derangements, cell death, and immunopathological responses, leading to host inflammation. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), produced by the microbiota, have emerged as a potential therapeutic for viral infections due to their ability to modulate these processes. However, SCFAs have been reported to have both beneficial and detrimental effects, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms. This review highlights the complex mechanisms underlying SCFAs' effects on viral infection outcomes. Abstract

The presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) can significantly affect the thermodynamic properties of a material at finite temperatures T. This is reflected, e.g., in the entropy landscape S(T, r) in the vicinity of a QCP, yielding particularly strong variations for varying the tuning parameter r such as pressure or magnetic field B. Here we report on the determination of the critical enhancement of $ \delta S / \delta B$ near a B-induced QCP via absolute measurements of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE), $(\delta T / \delta B)_S$, and demonstrate that the accumulation of entropy around the QCP can be used for efficient low-temperature magnetic cooling. Our proof of principle is based on measurements and theoretical calculations of the MCE and the cooling performance for a Cu$^{2+}$-containing coordination polymer, which is a very good realization of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain - one of the simplest quantum-critical systems., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present a series of measurements examining the penetration force required to push a flat plate vertically through a dense granular medium, focusing in particular on the effects of the bottom boundary of the vessel containing the medium. Our data demonstrate that the penetration force near the bottom is strongly affected by the surface properties of the bottom boundary, even many grain diameters above the bottom. Furthermore, the data indicate an intrinsic length scale for the interaction of the penetrating plate with the vessel bottom via the medium. This length scale, which corresponds to the extent of local jamming induced by the penetrating plate, has a square root dependence both upon the plate radius and the ambient granular stress near the bottom boundary, but it is independent of penetration velocity and grain diameter., Comment: 45 page pdf document (double spaced), 17 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

One potential application of magnetized RE-Ba-Cu-O (where RE = rare earth or Y) bulk superconductors is as a high-field alternative to conventional permanent magnets in desktop NMR and MRI systems. Pulsed field magnetization (PFM) is one of the most promising practical methods of magnetizing such bulks. However, the trapped fields obtained by PFM are much lower than those obtained using quasi-static methods like field-cooling magnetization (FCM) due to heating during PFM. Furthermore, bulk superconducting rings have proved more difficult to magnetize via PFM than discs. The reported trapped fields in single bulk superconducting rings magnetized by PFM are less than 0.35 T at the centre of the bore due to thermomagnetic instabilities. In this work, systematic PFM measurements on a bulk Gd-Ba-Cu-O ring were carried out and a trapped field of 1.3 T at 55 K was achieved using a multi-pulse, stepwise cooling (MPSC) method. In the MPSC method, a sequence of pulsed fields is used to magnetize the ring bulk. The pulsed field is increased in small increments and the sample temperature is decreased sequentially. Consequently, as some field is already trapped after the first pulse, the motion of the flux for subsequent pulses will be reduced, leading to less heat generated in the bulk sample. This greatly improves the thermomagnetic stability of the PFM process, enabling larger trapped fields.

In order to characterize thermal excitations in a frustrated spin liquid, we have examined the magnetothermodynamics of a model geometrically frustrated magnet. Our data demonstrate a crossover in the nature of the spin excitations between the spin liquid phase and the high-temperature paramagnetic state. The temperature dependence of both the specific heat and magnetization in the spin liquid phase can be fit within a simple model which assumes that the spin excitations have a gapped quadratic dispersion relation., Comment: 5 figures

Abstract

Bulk high-temperature superconducting materials can trap magnetic fields up to an order of magnitude larger than conventional permanent magnets. Recent advances in pulsed field magnetization (PFM) techniques now provide a fast and cost-effective method to magnetize bulk superconductors to fields of up to 5 T. We have developed a portable, desktop bulk high-temperature superconducting magnet system by combining advanced PFM techniques with state-of-the-art cryocooler technology and single-grain, RE-Ba-Cu-O [(RE)BCO, where RE is a rare-earth element or yttrium] bulk superconducting materials. The base temperature of the system is 41 K and it takes about one hour for the system to cool down to 50 K from room temperature. A capacitor bank, combined with easily-interchangeable, solenoid- or split-type copper magnetizing coils and an insulated bipolar gate transistor acting as a high-speed switch, allows magnetic pulses to be generated with different pulse profiles. The system is capable of trapping magnetic fields of up to ~3 T. In this work, we report the results of the magnetization of a range of single-grain Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO), Eu-Ba-Cu-O (EuBCO) and Gd-Ba-Cu-O (GdBCO), bulk superconducting discs using this system. A higher trapped field was recorded using a split coil incorporating iron yokes at temperatures of 65 K and above, whereas at lower temperatures, a higher trapped field was obtained using the solenoid coil. The GdBCO sample achieved the highest trapped field for both single-pulse (SP) and two-stage-multi-pulse (TSMP) methods using the solenoid coil. Maximum trapped fields of 2.26 T at 55 K and 2.85 T at 49 K were recorded at the centre of the top surface of the GdBCO sample for the SP and TSMP methods, respectively. The PFM process is substantially an adiabatic process so, therefore, the thermal contact between the sample and sample holder is of critical importance for cooling the bulk sample during application of the pulse. The design of the sample holder can be modified easily to enhance the thermal stability of the sample in order to achieve a higher trapped field.

18. A Study on the Sleep Patterns and Problems of University Business Students in Hong Kong

Abstract

Objective: To investigate sleep patterns and problems of university business students. Participants: Undergraduate Chinese business students in Hong Kong. Methods: Self-reported questionnaires were completed during class lectures and through online system. Results: Of the 620 participating students (mean age 19.9 years), sleep duration was significantly shorter during weekdays (6.9 hours) than weekends (8.6 hours). Two thirds of students reported sleep deprivation. The following factors were associated with being a "poor sleeper" (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index greater than 5): attending early morning lectures (odds ratio [OR] = 1.90), living on-campus (OR = 1.89), Sleep Sufficiency Index less than 0.8 (OR = 2.55), sleep debt (differences of total time-in-bed between weekday and weekend greater than or equal to 75 minutes) (OR = 1.58), and minor psychiatric disturbances (OR = 2.82). Conclusions: Poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation were prevalent in university business students in Hong Kong, especially for those attending early morning lectures and living on-campus. Systemic education on the importance of sleep and stress and time management is needed for university students. (Contains 6 tables.)

Abstract

Funder: University of Cambridge; doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100000735, Bulk superconductors can act as trapped-field magnets with the potential to be used for many applications such as portable medical magnet systems and rotating machines. Maximising the trapped field, particularly for practical magnetisation techniques such as pulsed field magnetisation (PFM), still remains a challenge. PFM is a dynamic process in which the magnetic field is driven into a superconducting bulk over milliseconds. This flux motion causes heating and a complex interplay between the magnetic and thermal properties. In this work, the local flux density during PFM in a MgB2 bulk superconductor has been studied. We find that improving the cooling architecture increases the flux trapping capabilities and alters the flux motion during PFM. These improvements lead to the largest trapped field (0.95 T) for a single MgB2 bulk sample magnetised by a solenoidal pulsed field magnet. The findings illustrate the fundamental role bulk cooling plays during PFM.

Abstract

Objective To describe the demographic characteristics, clinical features, functional status and quality of life of elderly-onset (EORA) and young-onset (YORA) rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients in an Asian cohort. Methods We studied all RA patients in our prospective disease registry, utilizing baseline data. EORA was defined as disease onset at 60 years or older. We collected data from January 2001 to December 2012. Results There were 1206 patients in our cohort, of which 178 (14.8%) had EORA, with a mean age of onset of 66.7 ± 5.6 years. There were more males in the EORA than YORA group (23.0% vs. 14.7%, P = 0.005). EORA patients were diagnosed sooner after symptom onset and had a higher number of comorbidities (median 2 [inter-quartile range 1–3] vs. 1 (0–2), P < 0.001). They were less likely to be rheumatoid factor positive, had higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate values and lower hemoglobin concentrations. There was no significant difference in joint counts, Disease Activity Score of 28 joints activity score and prevalence of radiographic erosions. Though EORA patients had worse Health Assessment Questionnaire scores and poorer functional status than YORA ones, they had lower pain scores and higher scores in the general health and mental component summary of the Short Form-36. EORA patients received significantly lower numbers of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. Conclusions EORA and YORA patients had different demographic characteristics. Although they had similar disease activities, EORA patients received less intensive treatment. EORA patients had a higher number of RA-related co-morbidities and poorer physical functioning but they coped better emotionally and mentally.
