The uncertainty about the relationships between the star catalogue contained in the Almagest (books VII-VIII) and the catalogue of Hipparchus dates back to the origins of modern astronomy. The fact that Hipparchus' catalogue was lost and that his observations of a limited number of stars remained has favored the formulation of various hypotheses on the subject. The recent discovery of (at least) a part of Hipparchus' catalogue seems to indicate that there are various concordances between the two catalogues, but also differences sufficient to suggest that Ptolemy's catalogue also derives from sources independent of Hipparchus' catalogue. This article presents an additional element for the comparison between the two catalogues, based on the diversity of the observation locations of the two astronomers, which provides an argument against the originality of the Ptolemaic catalogue., Comment: 5 pages, in Italian language, 2 figures

In this work, we provide a combinatorial formalism for dealing with the cancellations that have appeared recently in the context of dispersive PDEs with random initial data. The main idea is to transform iterated integrals encoded by decorated trees into words via an arborification map. This provides a formalism alternative to the one of molecules introduced by Deng and Hani (2023). It allows us to compute the cancellations coming from Wave turbulence and the proof of the invariance of the Gibbs measure under the dynamics of the three-dimensional cubic wave equation., Comment: 25 pages

We study log-correlated Gibbs measures on the $d$-dimensional torus with weakly interacting focusing quartic potentials whose coupling constants tend to $0$ as we remove regularization. In particular, we exhibit a phase transition for this model by identifying a critical threshold, separating the weakly and strongly coupling regimes; in the weakly coupling regime, we show that the frequency-truncated measures converge to the base Gaussian measure (possibly with a renormalized $L^2$-cutoff), whereas, in the strongly coupling regime, we prove non-convergence of the frequency-truncated measures, even up to a subsequence. We consider the 1-dimensional cubic Szeg\H{o} equation with data distributed according to the Gaussian measure with inverse covariance operator $(1-\partial_x^2)^\frac s2$, where $s>\frac12$. We show that, for $s>1$, this measure is quasi-invariant under the flow of the equation, while for $s<1$, $s\neq \frac34$, the transported measure and the initial Gaussian measure are mutually singular for almost every time. In this paper, we investigate the Gibbs measures associated with the focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with an anharmonic potential. We establish a dichotomy for normalizability and non-normalizability of the Gibbs measures in one dimension and higher dimensions with radial data. This extends a recent result of the third and fourth authors with Robert and Seong (2022), where the focusing Gibbs measures with a harmonic potential were addressed. Notably, in the case of a subharmonic potential, we identify a novel critical nonlinearity (below the usual mass-critical exponent) for which the Gibbs measures exhibit a phase transition. The primary challenge emerges from the limited understanding of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Schr\"odinger operator with an anharmonic potential. We consider the problem of ergodicity for the $P(\Phi)_2$ measure of quantum field theory under the flow of the singular stochastic (damped) wave equation $u_{tt} + u_t + (1-\Delta) u + {:}\,p(u)\mspace{2mu}{:} = \sqrt 2 \xi$, posed on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb T^2$. We show that the $P(\Phi)_2$ measure is ergodic, and moreover that it is the unique invariant measure for (the Markov process associated to) this equation which belongs to a fairly large class of probability measures over distributions. The main technical novelty of this paper is the introduction of the new concepts of asymptotic strong Feller and asymptotic coupling {restricted to the action of a group}. We first develop a general theory that allows us to deduce a suitable support theorem under these hypotheses, and then show that the stochastic wave equation satisfies these properties when restricted the action of translations by shifts belonging to the Sobolev space $H^{1-\varepsilon} \times H^{-\varepsilon}$. We then exploit the newly developed theory in order to conclude ergodicity and (conditional) uniqueness for the $P(\Phi)_2$ measure., Comment: 44 pages

We consider the Gibbs measure for the focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on the one-dimensional torus $\mathbb T$, that was introduced in a seminal paper by Lebowitz, Rose and Speer (1988). We show that in the large torus limit, the measure exhibits a phase transition, depending on the size of the nonlinearity. This phase transition was originally conjectured on the basis of numerical simulation by Lebowitz, Rose and Speer (1988). We study the hyperbolic $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-model on the plane. By establishing coming down from infinity for the associated stochastic nonlinear heat equation (SNLH) on the plane, we first construct a $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-measure on the plane as a limit of the $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-measures on large tori. We then study the canonical stochastic quantization of the $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-measure on the plane thus constructed, namely, we study the defocusing stochastic damped nonlinear wave equation forced by an additive space-time white noise (= the hyperbolic $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-model) on the plane. In particular, by taking a limit of the invariant Gibbs dynamics on large tori constructed by the first two authors with Gubinelli and Koch (2021), we construct invariant Gibbs dynamics for the hyperbolic $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-model on the plane. Our main strategy is to develop further the ideas from a recent work on the hyperbolic $\Phi^3_3$-model on the three-dimensional torus by the first two authors and Okamoto (2021), and to study convergence of the so-called enhanced Gibbs measures, for which coming down from infinity for the associated SNLH with positive regularity plays a crucial role. By combining wave and heat analysis together with ideas from optimal transport theory, we then conclude global well-posedness of the hyperbolic $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-model on the plane and invariance of the associated Gibbs measure. As a byproduct of our argument, we also obtain invariance of the limiting $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-measure on the plane under the dynamics of the parabolic $\Phi^{k+1}_2$-model., Comment: 79 pages. We introduce a new notion of irregularity of paths, in terms of control of growth of the size of small balls by means of the occupation measure of the path. This notion ensures Besov regularity of the occupation measure and thus extends the analysis of Catellier and Gubinelli (2016) to general Besov spaces. On stochastic processes this notion is granted by suitable properties of local non-determinism.

We consider the Cauchy problem for the fractional nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation (FNLS) on the one-dimensional torus with cubic nonlinearity and high dispersion parameter $\alpha > 1$, subject to a Gaussian random initial data of negative Sobolev regularity $\sigma

We study the construction of the $\Phi^3_3$-measure and complete the program on the (non-)construction of the focusing Gibbs measures, initiated by Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988). This problem turns out to be critical, exhibiting the following phase transition. In the weakly nonlinear regime, we prove normalizability of the $\Phi^3_3$-measure and show that it is singular with respect to the massive Gaussian free field. Moreover, we show that there exists a shifted measure with respect to which the $\Phi^3_3$-measure is absolutely continuous. In the strongly nonlinear regime, by further developing the machinery introduced by the authors (2020), we establish non-normalizability of the $\Phi^3_3$-measure. Due to the singularity of the $\Phi^3_3$-measure with respect to the massive Gaussian free field, this non-normalizability part poses a particular challenge as compared to our previous works. In order to overcome this issue, we first construct a $\sigma$-finite version of the $\Phi^3_3$-measure and show that this measure is not normalizable. Furthermore, we prove that the truncated $\Phi^3_3$-measures have no weak limit in a natural space, even up to a subsequence. We also study the dynamical problem. By adapting the paracontrolled approach, in particular from the works by Gubinelli, Koch, and the first author (2018) and by the authors (2020), we prove almost sure global well-posedness of the hyperbolic $\Phi^3_3$-model and invariance of the Gibbs measure in the weakly nonlinear regime. We study the global-in-time dynamics for a stochastic semilinear wave equation with cubic defocusing nonlinearity and additive noise, posed on the $2$-dimensional torus. The noise is taken to be slightly more regular than space-time white noise. In this setting, we show existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure for the Markov semigroup generated by the flow over an appropriately chosen Banach space. We study Gibbs measures with log-correlated base Gaussian fields on the $d$-dimensional torus. In the defocusing case, the construction of such Gibbs measures follows from Nelson's argument. In this paper, we consider the focusing case with a quartic interaction. Using the variational formulation, we prove non-normalizability of the Gibbs measure. When $d = 2$, our argument provides an alternative proof of the non-normalizability result for the focusing $\Phi^4_2$-measure by Brydges and Slade (1996). Furthermore, we provide a precise rate of divergence, where the constant is characterized by the optimal constant for a certain Bernstein's inequality on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also go over the construction of the focusing Gibbs measure with a cubic interaction. We study the optimization of the performance of arbitrary periodically driven thermal machines. Within the assumption of fast modulation of the driving parameters, we derive the optimal cycle that universally maximizes the extracted power of heat engines, the cooling power of refrigerators, and in general any linear combination of the heat currents. We denote this optimal solution as ``generalized Otto cycle'' since it shares the basic structure with the standard Otto cycle, but it is characterized by a greater number of fast strokes. We bound this number in terms of the dimension of the Hilbert space of the system used as working fluid. The generality of these results allows for a widespread range of applications, such as reducing the computational complexity for numerical approaches, or obtaining the explicit form of the optimal protocols when the system-baths interactions are characterized by a single thermalization scale. In this case, we compare the thermodynamic performance of a collection of optimally driven non-interacting and interacting qubits. Remarkably, for refrigerators the non-interacting qubits perform almost as well as the interacting ones, while in the heat engine case there is a many-body advantage both in the maximum power, and in the efficiency at maximum power. Additionally, we illustrate our general results studying the paradigmatic model of a qutrit-based heat engine. Our results strictly hold in the semiclassical case in which no coherence is generated by the driving, and finally we discuss the non-commuting case., Comment: 15+13 pages, 8 figures

Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988) initiated the study of focusing Gibbs measures, which was continued by Brydges and Slade (1996), Bourgain (1997, 1999), and Carlen, Fr\"ohlich, and Lebowitz (2016) among others. In this paper, we complete the program on the (non-)construction of the focusing Hartree Gibbs measures in the three-dimensional setting. More precisely, we study a focusing $\Phi^4_3$-model with a Hartree-type nonlinearity, where the potential for the Hartree nonlinearity is given by the Bessel potential of order $\beta$. We first construct the focusing Hartree $\Phi^4_3$-measure for $\beta > 2$, while we prove its non-normalizability for $\beta < 2$. Furthermore, we establish the following phase transition at the critical value $\beta = 2$: normalizability in the weakly nonlinear regime and non-normalizability in the strongly nonlinear regime. We then study the canonical stochastic quantization of the focusing Hartree $\Phi^4_3$-measure, namely, the three-dimensional stochastic damped nonlinear wave equation (SdNLW) with a cubic nonlinearity of Hartree-type, forced by an additive space-time white noise, and prove almost sure global well-posedness and invariance of the focusing Hartree $\Phi^4_3$-measure for $\beta > 2$ (and $\beta = 2$ in the weakly nonlinear regime). In view of the non-normalizability result, our almost sure global well-posedness result is sharp. We study global-in-time dynamics of the stochastic nonlinear wave equations (SNLW) with an additive space-time white noise forcing, posed on the two-dimensional torus. Our goal in this paper is two-fold. (i) By introducing a hybrid argument, combining the $I$-method in the stochastic setting with a Gronwall-type argument, we first prove global well-posedness of the (renormalized) cubic SNLW in the defocusing case. Our argument yields a double exponential growth bound on the Sobolev norm of a solution. (ii) We then study the stochastic damped nonlinear wave equations (SdNLW) in the defocusing case. In this paper, we consider a certain class of second order nonlinear PDEs with damping and space-time white noise forcing, posed on the $d$-dimensional torus. This class includes the wave equation for $d=1$ and the beam equation for $d\le 3$. We show that the Gibbs measure of the equation without forcing and damping is the unique invariant measure for the flow of this system. Since the flow does not satisfy the Strong Feller property, we introduce a new technique for showing unique ergodicity. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a sub-Laplacian on a connected Lie group $G$ of polynomial growth. It is well known that, if $F : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$ is in the Schwartz class $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})$, then the convolution kernel $\mathcal{K}_{F(\mathcal{L})}$ of the operator $F(\mathcal{L})$ is in the Schwartz class $\mathcal{S}(G)$. Here we prove a sort of converse implication for a class of groups $G$ including all solvable noncompact groups of polynomial growth. We study an optimal mass threshold for normalizability of the Gibbs measures associated with the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on the one-dimensional torus. In an influential paper, Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988) proposed a critical mass threshold given by the mass of the ground state on the real line. We provide a proof for the optimality of this critical mass threshold. The proof also applies to the two-dimensional radial problem posed on the unit disc. In this case, we answer a question posed by Bourgain and Bulut (2014) on the optimal mass threshold. Furthermore, in the one-dimensional case, we show that the Gibbs measure is indeed normalizable at the optimal mass threshold, thus answering an open question posed by Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988). This normalizability at the optimal mass threshold is rather striking in view of the minimal mass blowup solution for the focusing quintic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on the one-dimensional torus., Comment: 81 pages.
