7. Building Connections through Sport and Physical Activity for Ill and Injured Military Members and Veterans: Determining the Optimal Time for Program Involvement

Abstract

AbstractResearch has shown that physical fitness can benefit individuals with an injury or illness, enhancing their psycho-social health and well-being. The Soldier On program supports Canadian Armed Forces personnel and veterans in overcoming their physical and mental health injuries through promotion of physical activity and sport. Using a qualitative research design, a key question was investigated: are there optimal time points during which ill/injured military members and veterans have higher levels of readiness that would facilitate maximum benefit from program involvement? Semi-structured, in-person interviews were conducted with participants (n = 75) at Soldier On events across Canada. Results suggest there may be critical points following the onset of a significant injury/illness where event participation has the potential to enhance the positive impacts. For service members, this was identified to be following the official medical release decision and duration leading up to their transition out of the military. For veterans, it was found to be only after there was sufficient time post-release to allow for the full reintegration into civilian life. Findings suggest that when considering enrollment of military members and veterans into physical and sport therapy programs, it is important to tailor programs to these critical time periods for each individual.

9. Spatial vision meets spatial cognition: Examining the effect of visual blur on human navigation perfomance

Abstract

Navigation is a task that involves processing two-dimensional light patterns on the retinas to obtain knowledge about how to move through a three-dimensional environment. Therefore, modifying the basic characteristics of the two-dimensional information provided to navigators should have important and informative effects on how they form their representations of the environment. Despite this, few basic research studies have examined the effects of systematically modifying the available levels of spatial visual detail on mobility performance. In this study we tested the effects of a range of visual blur levels---approximately equivalent to various degrees of low-pass spatial frequency filtering---on participants" route learning performance using desktop virtual renderings of the Hebb-Williams mazes. Our findings show that the function of blur and time to finish the mazes follows a sigmoidal pattern, with the inflection point around +2 diopters of blur. This suggests that visually guided route learning is fairly robust to blur, with the threshold level being just above the limit for legal blindness. These findings have implications for models of route learning, as well as for practical situations in which humans must navigate under conditions of blur.

Abstract

Visual aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) consists of books or technologies that contain visual symbols to supplement spoken language. A common observation concerning some forms of aided AAC is that message preparation can be frustratingly slow. We explored the uses of fMRI to examine the neural correlates of visual search for line drawings on AAC displays in 18 college students under two experimental conditions. Under one condition, the location of the icons remained stable and participants were able to learn the spatial layout of the display. Under the other condition, constant shuffling of the locations of the icons prevented participants from learning the layout, impeding rapid search. Brain activation was contrasted under these conditions. Rapid search in the stable display was associated with greater activation of cortical and subcortical regions associated with memory, motor learning, and dorsal visual pathways compared to the search in the unpredictable display. Rapid search for line drawings on stable AAC displays involves not just the conceptual knowledge of the symbol meaning but also the integration of motor, memory, and visual-spatial knowledge about the display layout. Further research must study individuals who use AAC, as well as the functional effect of interventions that promote knowledge about array layout. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
